With more than one academic year into the pandemic, it is timely to consider the lessons we learnt, and how they could shape education in the future. Papers from around the globe, reflecting on the directions we took and could take, were published in the FEMS Microbiology Letters virtual Thematic Issue 'Educating in a pandemic and beyond' in October 2021. Its content is reviewed here to facilitate discussions within the professional community. Online platforms and tools, that allowed a rapid emergency response, are covered, as well as enhancing student engagement, complementing and blending in-person activities with online elements for more flexible and accessible learning opportunities, the need for educator training, and improving science literacy overall and microbiology literacy specifically. As we go forward, in order to benefit from blended and flexible learning, we need to select our approaches based on evidence, and mindful of the potential impact on learners and educators. This study explored the nuanced perceptions of teacher involvement among adolescents and teachers, shedding light on its distinct impacts on adolescents' behavior and emotional well-being—a relatively under-explored area in the Indian educational landscape. It aims to unravel how differing perceptions of teacher involvement from both parties influence adolescents' behavior and emotional problems. Employing a mixed-methods approach across two studies, involving the same group of participants, the research utilized the Adolescents' Behavioral and Emotional Problems Scale (ABEP) and Teachers Involvement and its Impact Scale (TI) for quantitative analysis, alongside semi-structured interviews with adolescents, teachers, and parents for qualitative insights. Results reveal that while teacher involvement perceived by adolescents significantly affects their behavior and emotional well-being, teachers' assessment of their involvement lacks significant impact. Themes from interviews underscore the pivotal role of teacher behavior, including public critique and preferential treatment, in influencing students' emotional wellness and academic engagement. Additionally, the study underscores the significance of teacher performance evaluation and job security concerns in shaping positive teacher-student dynamics, particularly for academically challenged students, whose difficulties may strain interactions further. The findings stress the importance for educators in Assam to prioritize fostering supportive relationships with students, actively listening to their perspectives, and addressing their individual needs for a conducive learning environment. Simulation based education (SBE) is an educational tool increasingly used in the approach to the initial and ongoing education of healthcare professionals. Like all education tools, SBE needs to be used appropriately to achieve the desired outcomes. Using Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) in the instructional design of simulations is essential to maximise participant learning by reducing extraneous load and optimising intrinsic load. Educators can modify task fidelity, task complexity and instructional support to optimise learning. Specific methodologies can be used in program design such as rapid cycle deliberate practice, round the table teaching, low dose high frequency and flipped classroom. Fidelity and authenticity are important factors to consider when choosing design elements to ensure learner engagement, but not to overwhelm cognitive load. An integral part of SBE is the feedback or debriefing component. Several evidence-based methodologies can be employed to facilitate post simulation learning, including Debriefing with Good Judgement and PEARLS. Adaptive learning aims to tailor the learning experience, including content, navigation, presentation, and strategies, based on learners' cognitive and affective factors. However, many existing adaptive learning systems often fail to meet the diverse needs and preferences of learners, typically relying on unique factors such as learning style. To address this, a robust framework is proposed, incorporating an artificial intelligence (AI) driven adaptive learning model capable of considering multiple factors, including past performance, hobbies, and learning style. The approach leverages the k-means clustering algorithm to group learners with similar leisure interests and incorporates Support Vector Regression to predict student performance, utilizing demographic data and past performance as metrics. Furthermore, the implementation of the Personalized Study Guide plugin, based on k-means clustering, enables the system to create personalized learning paths tailored to individual learning styles. This paper presents the development of a multidisciplinary learning model using automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) for laboratory courses, focusing on Industry 4.0 and 5.0 paradigms. Industry 4.0 and 5.0 emphasize advanced industrial automation and human–robot collaboration, which requires innovative educational strategies. Motivated by the need to align educational practices with these industry trends, the goal of this research is to design and implement an effective educational model integrating AGV and AMR. The methodology section details the complex development process, including technology selection, curriculum design, and laboratory exercise design. Data collection and analysis were conducted to assess the effectiveness of the model. The design phase outlines the structure of the educational model, integrating AGV and AMR into the laboratory modules and enriching them with industry collaboration and practical case studies. The results of a pilot implementation are presented, showing the impact of the model on students' learning outcomes compared to traditional strategies. The evaluation reveals significant improvements in student engagement and understanding of industrial automation. One identified benefit from these resources is to provide novel ideas for instructional methods. Game-based learning has also been a developing topic in education with research suggesting it may improve knowledge retention. This case describes the use of an AI-suggested game for teaching human gait to physical therapy students.ChatGPT was asked for creative ideas related to teaching gait to physical therapy students. Of the proposed ideas, ‘Gait Charades’ was selected and implemented. The topic of gait was chosen specifically for this learning activity due to its complexity. In the activity, students drew papers with a phase of gait and took turns acting out the phase and with peers deciding which phase was being presented. The use of ‘Gait Charades’ has not been identified in previous literature.While this case focuses more on the process of creating and implementing the activity rather than on measured outcomes, 26 out of 29(89.6%) students agreed that it aided in their understanding of gait phases.This case serves as a reminder of the tools at educators’ disposal, such as the use of AI to provide students with immediate feedback, to provide different wording of a concept, and to create novel learning experiences. The gait activity described shows how movement-based learning can be easily integrated into instruction. Across two studies we investigated the impact of instructor enthusiasm on student attentional engagement during an online undergraduate lecture, as well as their memory for lecture content and their motivation to watch additional lecture videos on the same topic (Study 2 only). In both studies participants were randomly assigned to watch a 22-min lecture, delivered with either high or low vocal enthusiasm by the instructor. Subjective ratings of instructor enthusiasm/energy confirmed that in both studies the manipulation of instructor enthusiasm was effective. More importantly, in both studies we found that students in the high enthusiasm condition were consistently more engaged over the course of the lecture compared to those in the low enthusiasm condition, and that overall, reports of engagement increased together with ratings of instructor enthusiasm. However, we found no evidence that instructor enthusiasm influenced quiz performance in either study. Nevertheless, Study 2 showed that those in the high enthusiasm condition were more motivated to watch the next lecture than those in the low enthusiasm condition. These findings make an important contribution to the study of online learning and indicate that instructor enthusiasm may be a viable strategy to increase student engagement and motivation in online courses. Rapid technological advancements, globalisation, environmental crises, and ongoing conflicts have contributed to an increasingly quickly changing social, cultural, and work environment for current and future generations. In this paper, we argue that the traditional schooling system and approaches to curriculum and pedagogy that are based on nineteenth century industrial age models might reach their limit to prepare students sufficiently for the expectations and challenges of life and work in future. While so-called 21st-century education has seen a nominal change in classroom layouts and increased use of teaching technology, we would argue that not much has changed in terms of the underlying structures of schools and the mostly pre-described curriculum schools and teachers must operate under. While current education systems struggle with many challenges from teacher burnouts to increasing student dis-engagement (e.g. rising truancy in New Zealand), we posit that new challenges lie ahead that will further disrupt, if not implode, current approaches to schooling and curriculum. Drawing on theories such as Biesta's World-Centred Education and Pinar's notion of Currere to reconceptualise curriculum, we would argue that schooling needs to move away from the traditional 'static map' of curriculum content to a more dynamic approach to schooling that allows teachers and schools to chart new territory, together with their students, for a rapidly changing future. As guiding compass of sorts for dynamically exploring an uncertain future with students, we propose Teschers educational approach to Schmid's Art of Living as a starting point. This study aimed to determine which domain of teaching competencies of teachers best influenced engagement of Senior High School Physical Education students. A total of 150 students from Cluster 1 schools of Davao City division were identified through a simple random sampling. The study utilized a quantitative non-experimental method of research using correlational technique. Mean, Pearson r, and regression analysis were used as statistical tools of the study. Results revealed a high level of physical teaching competencies of teachers. Similarly, students also demonstrated a high level of engagement in physical education. Moreover, the results showed a significant relationship between teaching competencies of teachers and engagement of Senior High School students in physical education. Further, teaching competencies significantly influence engagement of Senior High School students in physical education. Artificial intelligence integration, specifically ChatGPT, is becoming increasingly popular in educational contexts. This research paper provides a systematic literature review that examines the effects of incorporating ChatGPT into education. The study examines four primary research questions: the benefits and challenges of ChatGPT, its impact on student engagement and learning outcomes, ethical considerations and safeguards, and the effects on educators and teachers, based on an analysis of numerous scientific research articles published between 2022 and 2023. The results emphasize the numerous benefits of ChatGPT, such as the opportunity for students to investigate AI technology, personalized assistance, and improved learning experiences. Furthermore, advantages such as enhanced learning and enhanced information accessibility are identified. Nevertheless, ethical considerations and biases in AI models are also highlighted. ChatGPT enhances student engagement by offering personalized responses, prompt feedback, and rapid access to information, resulting in enhanced learning outcomes and the growth of critical thinking abilities. Ethical considerations and safeguards, including user education, privacy protection, human supervision, and stated guidelines, are essential for responsible use. The integration of ChatGPT transforms the role of educators from content delivery to assistance and guidance, thereby fostering personalized and differentiated learning. Educators have to consider ethical considerations while monitoring student usage in order to facilitate this transformation. Educational institutions can increase student engagement, learning outcomes, and the responsible use of AI in education by addressing challenges, establishing ethical guidelines, and leveraging the strengths of ChatGPT. Starting from observed gender differences in educational effort and because research considers motivation to be a personal student feature, this study had two aims. First, it examined whether autonomous and controlled motivation are shared by students within a school and whether such a motivation culture is associated with the school's student composition. Second, the study examined whether students', and specifically boys', class engagement and disruptive behaviour are associated with the motivation culture in their school. The main findings of analyses of data from 5162 eighth-grade students (average age 14) in 57 Flemish secondary schools are that (1) schools are characterized by an autonomous and controlled motivated culture that is related to schools' sex and migrant composition and schools' socioeconomic composition, respectively, and (2) boys' disruptive behaviour is related to the autonomous motivation culture, showing boys are more susceptible to their peers' motivation culture. ESP students need to develop their multimodal literacy to become literate in today's professional spaces. For this purpose, ESP teachers should revisit pedagogy practices to best engage students in the navigation and construction of multimodal genres. As a case in point, we explore PechaKucha (PK) presentations. This multimodal genre consists of 20 slides, which are automatically advanced every 20 s. PK presentations entail a complex format that requires speakers to choose how to convey content, design suitable visuals, and engage audiences. The dataset for the study consists of 7 PK presentations delivered during a social event at an architecture conference. Adopting a multimodal discourse analysis lens, we analyse this set of PK presentations in terms of rhetorical structure and the way in which intersemiotic relations unfolded (synchronisation between speech and visuals and the modal density of slides). The analysis demonstrates that PK presentations entail an intricate multimodal composition consisting of three moves in which professional and personal narratives intertwine. The examination of intersemiotic relations reveals how speech and visuals interplay effectively to transmit meaning and engage the audience. School engagement is a luxury not often afforded to children involved in the child welfare system. Current definitions of school engagement largely center around three micro-level foci: behavioral, emotional, and cognitive. These definitions rely heavily on the student and their participation in school in prescribed ways that can exclude system-involved youth, leaving little room to consider how life experiences and developmental trajectories interface with how students show up in educational spaces. This perspective of school engagement also lacks socio-ecological considerations that may impact children in the child welfare system, such as frequent school moves, trauma reactions, systemic racism, and insufficient access to structural resources. Each of these influences may affect how a child engages with school and how a school engages with children and families. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the conceptual misalignments of the current approaches to measuring school engagement for youth involved in the child-welfare system and its subsequent implications for practice and research. This article conceptualizes "possibilities" as a challenge to the ways that Black boys are constructed and arrested through their engagement in educational spaces. Critical race scholars have deployed counter-stories to disrupt deficit framing of Black boys by discussing their possibilities, promise, and potential. Similarly, we weave these insights and analyses of Black boys' lives to identify how multiple possibilities contribute to Black boys' thriving in education. The seven dimensions of the Possibilities Framework include dreaming (related to aspirations and fantasy), caring (e.g., cared for and cared about), belonging (related to mattering and feeling connected), enjoying (related to joy), agency (their actions and autonomy), protecting (feeling safe), and affirming (related to being valued). The article focuses on the ethical considerations and pedagogical strategies involved in teaching students who have ideological disagreements with course content. It explores the challenge of managing these disagreements while maintaining productive learning environments, and provides practical approaches for fostering meaningful dialogue and engagement among students with differing views.

Low-income students from underrepresented communities experience significant educational inequalities, including chronic absenteeism, mental health crises, trauma exposure, and social injustices. These conditions escalate risks of dropping out and justice system involvement. Middle-school youth must navigate intense social and emotional change. To address such challenges, The Arthur Project (TAP) provides intensive, in-school, therapeutic mentoring and family support. The program teaches students essential life skills, such as problem-solving, communication, and academic engagement. Students are empowered to strengthen their resilience, perseverance, self-actualization, and confidence. TAP provides up to 500 h of therapeutic mentoring yearly over three years, delivered individually and in small groups by social work interns. The research question was as follows: Does structured, intensive in-school therapeutic mentoring with social work interns increase the socioemotional, cognitive, noncognitive, and academic skills and engagement of underserved middle-school students? This evaluation for the school year 2022–2023 is based on the program of 200 students and 30 mentors, with quantitative mentee, mentor, teacher, and caregiver surveys and qualitative interview data. The program and evaluation methodology are described, with results and conclusions. Students showed significant improvement in all domains; mentors reported student increases in confidence, perseverance, problem-solving, and communication; and teachers and caregivers reported students' increased academic engagement. This study aims to examine the impact of gamification on financial knowledge through student enjoyment and student engagement. This study employed a quantitative approach and used a survey to examine the relationships between variables. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with 289 students who have previously received financial education at a public university participating as respondents. The research instrument utilized a questionnaire developed based on prior studies. The results were tested using Variational Bayesian Structural Equation Modeling (VB-SEM) to analyze the influence between variables. The findings showed that gamification had a positive impact on student enjoyment and student engagement. This study demonstrates that gamification does not directly influence students' financial knowledge. Student engagement fully mediated the effect of gamification on students' financial knowledge, whereas enjoyment does not affect students' financial knowledge. This study underscores the importance of fostering student engagement in gamification to enhance financial knowledge. The implications of this research include strengthening student engagement through various strategies, such as apperception, motivation, and interaction during the use of gamification in financial education.

In the African higher education landscape, the pervasive integration of Learning Management Systems (LMS) is reshaping the educational journey, offering both opportunities and challenges. This study delved into the intricate interplay between students’ engagement with LMS and its consequential impact on Learning Analytics (LA), specifically within the unique context of African higher education institutions. Employing the PRISMA systematic review approach, this research aimed to review significant work by researchers towards LMS and LA use in African universities in the form of contributing authors, keywords, citation statistics and growth patterns. The findings highlighted the transformative potential of LA and LMS use, which have the power to enhance both academic performance and the overall learning experience of African students. This research enhances the understanding of the complex relationship between LMS usage and LA in the African context, revealing how digital tools can address unique online learning challenges. As African institutions tackle 21st-century education challenges, this study provides a valuable roadmap for educators, administrators, and policymakers looking to leverage technology for meaningful educational outcomes. By contextualizing the findings within the African higher education landscape, this research contributes to the global discourse on the evolving role of digital platforms in shaping modern education.

This study aimed to identify the relationship between training program effectiveness and English language teachers' self-efficacy. The participants of this study consisted of 144 English language teachers at Makkah schools. The data were collected via the Effectiveness of Training Program Scale and the Teachers Self-Efficacy Scale. The findings of the study revealed a statistically significant relationship between training programs effectiveness and English language teachers' self-efficacy. Furthermore, English teachers perceived self-efficacy toward student engagement and instructional strategies was medium, whereas classroom management was not high. Relevant implications and future directions are discussed within the scope of the training program effectiveness and teacher’s self-efficacy literature.

The application of ethnomathematics in teaching has many benefits. Cultural diversity can be an interactive learning resource for students. One culture that has high ethnomathematics potential is the Papuan Mountain culture. Although several examples of ethnomathematics have been found in Papuan culture, the design of ethnomathematics applications in learning is still very minimal. In addition, the lack of student involvement in the ethnomathematics exploration process is an important reason for the need to develop ethnomathematics-based learning based on 21st-century learning. The type of research is research development by using the nine stages of Dick and Carey’s development. The results of research and development concluded that the mountain ethnomathematics-based learning design was developed in 4 main stages, namely analysis, development design, implementation, and evaluation. Strategies that can be used in ethnomathematics-based learning in Papua Mountains to increase learner involvement and create meaningful learning are exploration, oriented to problem statements, constructing knowledge and experiences of learners based on their culture. The results of the analysis show that the ethnomathematics-based learning design of the culture of the Papua Mountains is good and feasible to implement with a validity index of 0.802 while the reliability index of rater agreement on the learning design is good, namely 0.896.

This study investigates the integration of digital literacy into Christian Religious Education (CRE) at Politeknik Negeri Ambon, examining its impact on student engagement, academic performance, and ethical development. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research involved surveys, assessments, interviews, and focus groups with students and educators. The results indicated that higher levels of digital literacy significantly enhance student engagement and academic performance in CRE, while also positively influencing moral and ethical development. However, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of training, and resistance to change were identified as barriers to successful integration. The study concludes that with appropriate support and resources, integrating digital literacy into CRE can provide a comprehensive educational experience that aligns with both technological advancements and religious principles.

The purpose of this study was to understand the interactions of prompts used to initiate engagement and the resulting student engagement using video-data from one biology lecturer in a semester-long module. This study was informed by the socio-cultural perspectives on learning. The transcripts from video data were divided into interactive episodes. In these episodes, we looked for how the prompts (classified as verbal and non-verbal) interacted to bring student engagement. Findings indicate that the prompts interacted in a variety of ways. Findings indicate that the use of verbal prompts like questions resulted in minimal student engagement. Student engagement was heightened when the lecturer initiated whole-class discussion using both verbal prompts as well as non-verbal prompts in an interactive manner. We discuss the significance of these findings and argue how our approach to looking at student engagement helped us to unpack these succinct findings.

This research aims to analyze social media use in collaborative learning on the implementation of online knowledge sharing to maximally improve student academic performance. The research method used a survey with a quantitative approach. The research sample was taken by purposive sampling on diploma 3 and undergraduate students at several public and private universities in Java Island, Indonesia. As a result, 359 respondents filled out an online questionnaire distributed via a google form link. Data analysis using SEM PLS path analysis with SmartPLS program version 3.0. The results of this research stated that social media used in collaborative learning correlated with online knowledge sharing. The ease of sharing knowledge accelerates the dissemination of material delivered by teachers to students as a trigger for collecting questions and recommendations based on the student's point of view. Online knowledge sharing is related to student engagement, where students always update the knowledge that has been stored in their social media groups. Active student engagement will be assessed optimally by the teacher as a student reward so that academically the student's GPA increases, learning goals can be achieved, and students can contribute actively to spreading their knowledge through social media.

Digital disparities concerning access, skills, and utilization of digital technology pose a barrier to engagement in e-learning processes, ultimately serving as a significant source of exclusion, inequality, and social isolation. This quantitative study involved 1526 middle school pupils residing in the rural regions of Moldova. The objective of this research is to evaluate students' digital competencies and their perspectives on the online learning experience. Our results indicate that the highest digital competence area is Digital content creation (DC) and the lowest is "Problem-solving" (PS). We also found a positive correlation between face-to-face discussion with the teacher and the mean scores from the digital skills level, the correlation seems to be mediated by the variable "the possibility to ask the teacher" (PAT). The discussion revolves around the role of the teacher as an intermediary and mediator in the education process, emphasizing the concrete interaction between teachers and students as a fundamental element in enhancing and improving digital skills. This paper shares the results of a meta-analysis on the parental-relational component of parental-involvement and its association with the academic and behavioral outcomes of urban students. This meta-analysis includes 76 quantitative studies. The results indicated that statistically significant effects emerged across students of different backgrounds, including differences by age groups, race, gender, and nationality. Clickers are hand-held devices that wirelessly transmit student input to a computer: students answer multiple-choice questions using their clickers and the answer distribution is displayed on a screen. Previous studies suggest that the pedagogical use of these devices may contribute to learning and that they are positively perceived by students in general and second language education. Despite these optimistic outcomes, clicker studies remain scarce in L2 education and in K-12 contexts. This study investigated 61 adolescent students' and their teacher's perceptions of using clickers to learn vocabulary in an English as a Second Language context. Two intact groups of students were assigned to a treatment group (Clicker Group, n = 31; Non-Clicker Group, n = 30). Their perceptions were examined via surveys and interviews, guided by four measures: Learning, Self-assessment, Engagement, and Interactivity. The results suggest that students in the Clicker Group had significantly more positive perceptions than those in the Non-Clicker Group for most measures. This corroborates previous findings regarding students' perceptions of clickers. Interviews were conducted to assess the teacher's perceptions. In contrast to the students, the teacher's perception was predominantly neutral to negative, contradicting existing literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Teachers hold many beliefs, shaped by their educational knowledge, experiences, and cultural, social, historical, and political environments. These teacher beliefs, together with teacher characteristics and school context factors can influence cognitive processes, expectations, instructional decisions, and practices which could affect learning experiences, student engagement, and achievement. Numerous studies have explored these factors, however, often separately or with only one or two others. This paper explores primary school teachers' self-reported perceptions on the relationships between teacher beliefs (including teacher class level expectations, self-efficacy, motivation, goal orientation, work engagement, passion for teaching, relatedness to students), teacher characteristics (including gender, ethnicity, teacher experience), and school context factors (including decile and year level taught), and the impact of these on student achievement and teachers' instructional practices. Associations were found between teaching self-efficacy and all the other factors explored; work engagement and teachers' years of teaching experience, gender, and school decile; and years of teaching experience and student achievement. The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has raised questions about the implications of ChatGPT for teaching and learning. A systematic literature review was conducted to answer these questions, analyzing 112 scholarly articles to identify the potential benefits and challenges related to ChatGPT use in educational settings. The selection process was thorough to ensure a comprehensive analysis of the current academic discourse on AI tools in education. Our research sheds light on the significant impact of ChatGPT on improving student engagement and accessibility and the critical issues that need to be considered, including concerns about the quality and bias of generated responses, the risk of plagiarism, and the authenticity of educational content. The study aims to summarize the utilizations of ChatGPT in teaching and learning by addressing the identified benefits and challenges through targeted strategies. Today, education is facing a new reality in which technology and new teaching methods are being quickly introduced into educational systems and institutions. Educational institutions are now dealing with the challenge of providing continuity to e-learning, turning it into a more flexible and up-to-date field, and considering assessment as a quality element in this transition. Therefore, with the aim of determining the current state of the research focused on assessment in digital environments (e-assessment), a mapping of the literature has been carried out. After examining 1,771 results extracted from Web of Science and Scopus and after the application of seven inclusion criteria, a total of 159 publications from the period of the past five years were read. The answer four research questions on the evolution of publications, the authors, the tools used, the contexts, the objects of study, and the future avenues of research, among others. The results show the increasing importance of e-assessment in this new context, moving toward a new reality in which technology plays a decisive and fundamental role in the teaching and learning processes. Thus, educational systems are heading towards a new context in which both teachers and students should rethink their roles and functions leading education to a more flexible, current, and digitally mediated context. Education is an indispensable tool for improving social sustainability. In the school context, a wide variety of methodologies are being considered to achieve this goal by promoting cultural and experiential sustainability through educational and technological innovation. Educational robotics is an educational–formative context that makes it possible to develop new learning environments, enhance sustainable curriculum development, and promote active student participation. The general objective of this research is to analyze the perceptions of teachers of technology, robotics, and/or programming and to study the social benefits of interpersonal, intrapersonal, and/or academic skills of students to improve curricular sustainability during the teaching–learning process from the perspective of robotics and programming in students in early childhood education, primary education, compulsory secondary education, and other educational levels in formal and non-formal education. The study sample included 115 teachers of technology, programming, and/or robotics (50.4% male, 49.6% female). The research was carried out using a quantitative, retrospective, and cohort methodology through a cross-sectional, non-experimental, and non-longitudinal study over time. A questionnaire specifically designed to collect data from the participating teachers was used. According to the results obtained, educational robotics is a multidisciplinary learning tool that enhances the development of skills such as personal autonomy, collaborative work, and emotional management, motivates the acquisition of knowledge based on practice, promotes curricular sustainability, and creates a new learning context where the teacher is the formative guide of the students and the students are engaged in their own learning. Introduction: Integrating technology and active learning methods into Laboratory activities would be a transformative educational experience to familiarize physical therapy (PT) students with STEM backgrounds and STEM- based new technologies. However, PT students struggle with technology and feel comfortable memorizing under expositive lectures. Thus, we described the difficulties, uncertainties, and advances observed by faculties on students and the perceptions about learning, satisfaction, and grades of students after implementing laboratory activities in a PT undergraduate course, which integrated surface-electromyography (sEMG) and kinematic technology combined with active learning methods. Methods: Six cohorts of PT students (n = 482) of a second-year PT course were included. The course had expositive lectures and seven laboratory activities. Students interpreted the evidence and addressed different motor control problems related to daily life movements. The difficulties, uncertainties, and advances observed by faculties on students, as well as the students' perceptions about learning, satisfaction with the course activities, and grades of students, were described. Results: The number of students indicating that the methodology was "always" or "almost always," promoting creative, analytical, or critical thinking was 70.5% [61.0-88.0%]. Satisfaction with the whole course was 97.0% [93.0-98.0%]. Laboratory grades were linearly associated to course grades with a regression coefficient of 0.53 and 0.43 R-squared (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Integrating sEMG and kinematics technology with active learning into laboratory activities enhances students' engagement and understanding of human movement. Assessment design is challenging when trying to balance student engagement and instructor workloads. Open-ended question-and-answer assessments can be effective but can lead to student disengagement and lower levels of learning. Designing an assessment that piques interest and motivates students to pursue an answer on their own increases student engagement and promotes deeper learning. Remote sensing is an ideal topic to implement an authentic assessment design as a guided project throughout the semester. The assessment is designed to guide students through digital image processing steps with a critical thinking emphasis on how the processing steps are applied to their project by answering why rather than how. The assessment's implementation with instructor feedback to the student is based on in-class progress and several draft submissions of the project. Balancing the instructor workload is a challenge in designing authentic assessments in remote sensing; therefore, rubrics and ungraded feedback submissions are offered and implemented. Student agency in the form of students' active involvement in developing self-regulated learning skills by setting goals, monitoring, and adjusting their own learning process, is increasingly recognised as a key component of classroom self-assessment among researchers. The purpose of this article is to offer a conceptual and practical framework for scaffolding students' agentic engagement in formative self-assessment as a co-regulatory, three-phase process centred around students' competence development within the Zone of Proximate Development (ZPD). Agentic engagement in learning occurs when students make proactive, intentional, and constructive contributions to a learning activity, by offering input and making suggestions. This article explores process, product, and competence dimensions of formative self-assessment. It draws upon data from 256 Australian primary students involved in a one-setting practitioner study, conducted as a writing project in which students used a planning template. The findings show that when the planning template was used to scaffold teacher–learner transactions, a range of both direct and indirect teacher–learner transactions occurred, which were prompted by students' agentic engagement in their learning. The direct teacher–learner transactions included joint, two-way transactions focused on co-regulation, which were either initiated by the learner or by the teacher. The findings also included examples of one-way teacher–learner transactions that involved interactions in which the transaction was aimed at addressing a specific learning need or challenge. These findings imply that using a self-assessment planning template to foster learning through co-regulation enables both instruction and feedback to occur at the point of need, in a task-specific context within the student's ZPD. Teacher–student interactions are considered to influence student engagement. As such, building on the teaching through interaction framework, this study presents an investigation of specific features of teacher–student interactions (regard for adolescent perspectives, productivity, and instructional learning formats) and their association with student engagement in a particular lesson. The sample consisted of 404 8th–10th grade students from 18 classrooms. The data comprised 87 videorecorded lessons, divided into 216 observation cycles, coded using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System – Secondary observational instrument. Additionally, the students' self-reports of their situational engagement were collected using the web-based In Situations (InSitu) instrument at the end of six separate lessons. The data were analysed with cross-classified multilevel structural equation modelling, with engagement ratings cross-classified by students and lessons. In line with the study hypothesis, the results revealed positive associations between situational engagement and the two dimensions of regard for adolescent perspectives and instructional learning formats, yet there were unexpected negative associations with productivity. However, the specific impact of digital games on soft skills development within EFL contexts remains an underexplored area. Hence, this article investigates the impact of integrating diverse digital games into EFL classrooms on the development of soft skills among Moroccan EFL students. This quasi-experimental longitudinal study aimed to investigate the relationship between participation in an online gaming club and the development of soft skills, specifically English communication skills and critical thinking skills, over a sixmonth period. The hypothesis posited that engaging in online gaming activities would lead to improvements in both English communication skills and critical thinking skills among participants. The findings suggested that engagement in online gaming has a positive impact on the development of soft skills such as English communication skills and critical thinking skills. The study contributes to the broader discourse on innovative pedagogical approaches in EFL contexts, shedding light on the potential of digital games as effective tools for fostering essential skills beyond language proficiency.
