This study aims to determine the effect of the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) model on Science Process Skills (SPS), cognitive abilities and the correlation between SPS and students' cognitive abilities on the reaction rate concept. The sample in this study were 35 students of class XI SMA Negeri Seribu Bukit 2016-2017 academic year. The data was collected through observation and test. 20 multiple choice questions (alpha:0.81) were used to collect data of student’s SPS. While students' cognitive abilities were obtained by pre-test and post-test using 20 multiple choice questions (alpha:0.84). The distributed normally and homogeneously. The hypothesis was tested by using Paired Sample t-Test at a significance level of 0.05. Based on the data analysis and hypothesis testing carried out, there was a significant difference in the effect of the POGIL model on Science Process Skills (SPS), cognitive abilities and significant interactions between SPS and students' cognitive abilities on the material reaction rate, indicated by the value of each probability or sig. 0,000, so it can be concluded that the results of testing the hypothesis reject Ho or accept Ha at the 5 percent alpha level.

Pedagogies of engagement (i.e., Peer-Led Teaming Learning, Problem-Based Learning, and Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) are active learning approaches used in postsecondary chemistry courses. In this study, we use data from a national survey of postsecondary chemistry instructors in the United States to estimate use of three pedagogies in the course for which the instructor feels they have the most control. We found that 16.6% of these faculties report they are implementing Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL), 10.6% report implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and 10.7% report implementing Process-Oriented Guided-Inquiry Learning (POGIL). We compare use of select teaching practices and other active learning strategies with implementation of PLTL, PBL, and POGIL. Additionally, we use items from the survey to understand course, institution, and instructor characteristics associated with use. Key findings include that lower-level courses and courses with large enrollments are the most likely places for PLTL to be implemented and that instructors who are not on the tenure track are more likely to implement PLTL and POGIL than tenured/tenure-track instructors. Instructors who report implementing PLTL and PBL have more student-centered beliefs about teaching and learning, while instructors who report implementing POGIL have more teacher-centered beliefs about learning, albeit all with small effect sizes. Implications are offered for how instructors, researchers, developers and disseminators of these pedagogies can use our results to inform their practices and efforts.

A novel methodology has been developed to capture student interactions and engagement modes by mapping their discourse in Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) physical chemistry courses using graph theory and a modified ICAP (Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive) framework. This work provides a deeply contextualized description of student teamwork in a POGIL setting with triangulation of data from talk-turn tracking and coding of student engagement. Graphs of student discussions in teams were constructed for 17 students in five teams in two courses taught by different instructors. Combined with the modified ICAP framework, our data illustrate the amount, extent, and quality of discussion along with students’ cognitive engagement. Specific facilitation strategies used by instructors appear to correlate with improved student discussion and interactivity. Such strategies include providing responsive versus prepared lectures and requiring students to publicly share their thinking.

For six semesters, activities have been incorporated into first year general chemistry courses in an effort to build student conceptual chemistry knowledge. The activities follow a learning cycle pedagogy (similar to Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning or POGIL activities) and consist of guiding questions involving animations, models, simulations, or a data set and are completed by students working in groups. The efficacy of the learning cycle approach and learning outcomes from POGIL and other similar initiatives have been well studied; however, examining how scaffolding in chemistry learning cycles can improve learning outcomes has not been well studied. In Fall 2016, an activity was implemented in a first semester general chemistry course that focused on energy changes during bond breaking and bond making. The data showed that, even after working with the PhET Atomic Interactions simulation guided by the activity, about half of the students in the sample (N = 55) still thought bond-breaking was an exothermic process, even though they collected data from the simulation that indicated otherwise. After analyzing student answers, the activity was redesigned to increase scaffolding and improve concept development. Students’ performance improved greatly with the implementation of the second activity with 82% of students (N = 34) able to identify and distinguish between exothermic and endothermic processes. Results have implications for applying research-based techniques to activity development to improve students’ conceptual understanding in chemistry.

One of the essential skills students should possess in the 2013 Curriculum is critical thinking. However, students' critical thinking skills in buffer solution material are considered low. Therefore, this study aims to identify the different critical thinking skills between students who attend a process-oriented guided oriented learning (POGIL) with and without science, environmental, technology, and society (SETS) approach on buffer solution material. This research uses quasi-experimental with a posttest-only control group design. The research results reveal that: (1) both POGIL learning models with and without the SETS approach are classified to be successfully carried out; (2) different critical thinking skills are found in students who learn using the POGIL learning model with and without the SETS approach on buffer solution material. The POGIL learning model with the SETS approach carries better students' critical skills results than the one with no SETS approach on the buffer solution material.

Facing the industrial revolution 4.0, Indonesian citizens are challenged to be ready to feel some changes in many sectors including education sector. That is why Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Mathla’ul Anwar University of Banten, a study programme which will prepare the graduates for industrial era 4.0 should start designing a learning process in order to create the graduates who are ready to face technology era that will be headed. This learning process innovation can be started by changing the learning paradigm from Teacher Centered Learning (TCL) to Student Centered Learning (SCL). One of technique that can be used is POGIL (Process-oriented guided-inquiry learning). It is a collaborative learning (cooperative, integrated inquiry, metacognitive). To make POGIL technique work optimally, it can be done by doing some learning activities of Lesson Study. Lesson study is an educator profession guiding model through learning assessment collaboratively and sustainably according to collegiality principals and mutual learning to improve the learning quality and learning community. Learning activities through the POGIL technique, are thought to be able to help improve the metacognition skills of English language education students, one of which is by seeing the results of the level of student activity while studying. This research is aimed to find out the student’s activity by using POGIL technique through learning activities of Lesson Study. The research question of this article is how to increase student learning activities with the POGIL technique through LSLC? This research is descriptive statistical analysis. The populations in this research are 25 university students who take English Education Course. The data collecting technique was done by using questionnaire. After data collecting, normality testing was done by using Shapiro-Wilk testing (because the population is less than 100) with signification degree α = 5%, followed by T one-sample test.According to data processing result done by using SPSS version 25, it is concluded that the average is 82,24 and deviation standard is 4,47. Then the normality test is applied and we get Sig. for 0,549, because the amount of Sig. is more than 0,05 so that data has normal distribution. Then T one-sample test is applied, and we get tcount=1,734 at the significant level 5%. The number of ttable got from t distribution table with dk=25 is 1,708. So, according to the result of data processing and t distribution table, it is known that the score of tcount=1,734 > ttable=1,708 at the significant degree 5%. It can be concluded that by POGIL technique application through Lesson Study activity, 80% students become more active in learning activity process at the class.

This research aimed at analyzing the influence of ‘Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning’ model assisted by realia media, in which it was to improve the scientific literacy and critical thinking skill of primary school students, especially for the material of energy. This quasi-experiment research used single factor independent groups design. The research sample of this research were fourth grade students of SD Inpres Oeba 2 Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara Province, of which students were in the academic year of 2019/2020. The technique of sample collection was carried out purposive sampling for 2 classes. The IVA class was used as the experimental class (POGIL model assisted by the realia media), in which it consisted of 30 students and the IVB class was used as the control class (expository learning) that consisted of 28 students. The learning was carried out in four meetings. The data of scientific literacy and the results test of critical thinking were collected by means of objective test on the energy material. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze the data using significance level of 0.05. The results indicate that (1) There is a significant difference between the students’ scientific literacy who gain the POGIL learning assisted by the realia media and the students’ scientific literacy who get the expository learning; and (2) There is a significant difference between the critical thinking of students who get POGIL learning assisted by realia media and the students who get the expository learning. It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the scientific literacy and the students’ critical thinking taught by the POGIL learning that assisted by realia media to the students who use expository learning. Since there is a significant difference, it means that the POGIL learning assisted by realia media has an influence on the students' scientific literacy and critical thinking.

This study investigated the effectiveness of process-oriented guided-inquiry learning (POGIL) pedagogy in improving male and female undergraduates' academic achievement in science education, in comparison with the conventional lecture method. A non-equivalent, control group quasi-experimental design was used to investigate male and female undergraduates' achievement in science education. Data were collected from 85 second-year science education undergraduates and analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and analysis of covariance. The results show that POGIL pedagogy, as opposed to lecture pedagogy, resulted in improved academic achievement in science education (F (1,82) = 26.66, P = .000, ˂ .05). The data provided evidence to suggest that undergraduates that learned by the POGIL method had a greater grasp of content knowledge than their counterpart that learned by the lecture approach, as evidenced by higher mean achievement scores for POGIL undergraduates. There was no significant influence of gender on the undergraduates' achievement in the POGIL (F (1,37) = .805, P = .375, ˃ .05). The findings of the study have implications for the restructuring of science education teaching environments in the university system by de-emphasizing and discouraging the use of teacher-centered pedagogies and promoting the use of the current student-centered pedagogies for enhancing the undergraduates' academic achievement. The researchers, therefore, recommend that lecturers should organize science educational environments to support active learning strategies for improved undergraduates' academic achievement in science education.

As a pedagogical approach, process oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) allows students to socially construct knowledge through iterative cycles that include three steps: exploring a model, inventing a concept, and applying the resulting ideas. A growing body of research indicates that relative to lecture-based approaches, POGIL supports student learning more effectively. In this article, we review research related to POGIL, focusing on the nature of the evidence used to evaluate its impact on student learning, as well as trends related to relevant features of the studies, such as theoretical and methodological choices. We find that this body of research has typically focused on quantitative measures that broadly assess student outcomes, with fewer studies concentrating on qualitative, theory-based explanations of student learning. Moreover, key features of POGIL implementation (e.g., theoretical underpinnings, activity structure, process skills, and student roles) remain understudied. On the basis of the review, we propose suggestions for future research and practice.

This research is a descriptive research. The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between POGIL model and van Hiele learning in an effort to increase the level of students' geometr ical thinking. This research was implemented in one of junior high school in Bandung. The population in this research was grade VII students. The sample consisted of 63 students. Data level of students' geometr ical thinking obtained through test techniques. Test questions are arranged based on indicators from each level. The data collection technique was carried out using the triangulation method. The data analysis technique was descriptive. PurposeProcess-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) is a series of learning activities building on student prior knowledge guiding them to construct their own understanding of new concepts in collaborative roles. This paper aims to illustrate how POGIL worksheets can be adapted for low bandwidth and low-computing environments to accommodate the largest swathe of learners in higher education, as was the case during the switch to emergency remote learning in 2020.Design/methodology/approachThe POGIL worksheets in this paper scaffold the discovery of new concepts while providing sample computer program output, guiding students to make predictions about the connection between program input and program output. Answers are provided to these questions after completion so that students may check their understanding or look to the answers as worked examples. These POGIL worksheets were used for the past two years in an in-person classroom situation with minimal computing resources, replacing 4/5 of a classroom lecture doing POGILs collaboratively. In the midst of emergency remote learning, these worksheets were adapted to complement asynchronous lecture videos, and also serve as lecture replacement as needed.FindingsThis paper discusses an approach to adapting POGIL worksheets for introduction to computer science for students who may not have the necessary digital tools (programing software, bandwidth for streaming video, etc.). While the context for this paper is computer science, POGIL has a deep history in chemistry education and other natural sciences, suggesting an approach that may be adapted for situations where hands-on laboratory experiments may not be possible.Originality/valueCS-POGIL has many materials available for computer science, but this paper discusses 23 new worksheets and how to adapt them to the novel situation of emergency remote teaching.

This paper describes the development of POGIL based instructional design classes for complex engineering problems described in the Program Outcomes (PO) of National Board of Accreditation (NBA), India accreditation criteria. Embedded system Design course in Electronics and Communication Engineering course (ECE) is considered for experimentation. Subsequently it aims at providing students and interested fresh faculty an opportunity to design and build the project on their own. The aim of the project is to design a round robin based embedded system where the tasks are of their choice. To structure and complete their design part, both students and faculty were posed with a large number of questions. They were asked to refer literature and data sheets for their work. Once the design part was reviewed to avoid critical errors, students built their project and compared solutions to theoretical predictions. Feedback was collected and analysed to determine the effectiveness of POGIL in PO attainment. The reflections given by both faculty and students were positive, in particular students found that solving complex engineering problems are quite difficult and challenging compared to other prescribed book end exercises but POGIL helped them to be more constructive to build their knowledge.

We implemented NSF-funded computerized Experimental Psychology Laboratories at Touro College and incorporated process-oriented guided-inquiry learning (POGIL). We designed POGIL modules for the labs and conducted workshops for faculty on the implementation of the guided-inquiry approach, including learning teams. Data were collected from students who took experimental psychology with and without using POGIL, to assess the impact of the curriculum materials. Achievement was measured with (a) selected items from the Major Field Achievement Tests (MFAT) and (b) our own assessment instrument. Results indicated that students using the POGIL materials performed significantly better on both achievement tests than students not using them. This is the first demonstration that POGIL led to higher achievement than non-POGIL instruction for experimental psychology. These results are consistent with previous POGIL findings in the field of chemistry.

Discipline-based educational research (DBER) has shown that three instructional techniques – Supplemental Instruction (SI), Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL), and Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) – can be effective ways of improving student performance in chemistry courses at the K-12 or college/university levels. The goal of this paper is to use an analysis of the literature to compare and contrast these instructional techniques and, when possible, to determine “best practices” for their implementation. Particular attention will be paid to four themes related to the impact of PLTL on students, impact on peer-team-leaders, how to motivate peer leaders, and impact of peer leaders on the instructors who implement PLTL in their classroom.

Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL®) as a collaborative inquiry method has been widely used in teaching chemistry to high school and college students. This paper presents the impact of POGIL on 65 middle school students’ understanding about nature of matter. It is a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design study in which a control group taught by whole class instruction was compared to the experimental group which was taught by POGIL in the context of the “Particulate Nature of Matter (PNM) Unit” including PNM, physical and chemical change and density topics. A Nature of Matter Achievement Test was administered as both pre- and post-test. It was found that a POGIL method improved students’ achievement more than teacher-centered whole-class instruction. This study provides evidence supporting the fact that POGIL is an effective pedagogy to teach nature of matter to middle school students.

Assessment, including course exams, clearly indicates to students what learning goals they are expected to master in a certain course. However, most of these assessments tend to focus on generating a correct answer rather than on the type of reasoning or skills used to arrive at the answer. If educators value skills in addition to the correctness of an answer, it is important that they assess them. As part of the ANA-POGIL (analytical process oriented guided inquiry learning) project, the ANA-POGIL team developed a set of process-rich or guided-inquiry-type assessment questions to be used on exams. These questions were designed to mirror the structure of the POGIL activities, where students were provided data in the form of a table, graph, or set of information with the intention of eliciting evidence of process skills such as information processing, problem solving, and critical thinking in the students’ written responses. This study presents an analysis of student responses gathered from multiple institutions over several semesters to determine characteristics of questions that are likely to elicit evidence of process skills. Results of this project can provide some insight and recommendations to instructors about how to construct questions to elicit evidence of desired skills.

Information technology has stimulated efforts to reform teaching methods in dental education. Most of these efforts involve a shift from conventional mode to the more technology-savvy and student-centered approach. The aim of this study was to compare postgraduate dental students' academic performance using two teaching methodologies (video-based learning and blended module-based learning) in a biostatistics and research methodology course in a master's program at a dental college in India. This retrospective study involved two groups of students enrolled in the master's program with different years of admission: Group I in 2013-14 (n=80) and Group II in 2015-16 (n=80). Group I students learned the subjects with video-based learning, whereas Group II students were taught using a blended module program using a small-group learning system called Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL). The students' final course evaluation (summative assessment) and formative assessment (during course assessments) were compared for the two groups. The students' final course evaluation was derived from an end-of-year written examination, whereas the formative assessment was recorded with written tests and projects during the course. As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring 2020 semester, a large-lecture organic POGIL classroom was moved completely online. Normally the course involved daily group work that was facilitated by undergraduate teaching assistants, and these TAs would also assess student process skills such as critical thinking, information processing, teamwork, and communication. After the move to online instruction, the format of the course dramatically changed. In this communication, we describe the ways in which we attempted to maintain the basic structure of the POGIL classroom in a virtual environment. Changes to the course included the implementation of several online structures to provide students with opportunities to learn in ways that best fit their individual home situations. On the basis of survey data from the students and teaching assistants, we discuss the challenges that these two groups faced, including motivation, organization, and technological issues. We also describe how an online environment requires TAs to play a more active role in encouraging crosstalk between students than a face-to-face setting. Finally, we provide insights into how instructors can address these concerns in future online learning environments, including the use of synchronous and asynchronous activities and changes in assessment practices.

Background: As the Emergency medicine is a multidisciplinary discipline, the emergency medicine education is focuses on teaching students to think actively. The flipped classroom was widely used in various medicine teaching that can improve the efficacy of classroom learning. While the process-oriented guided-inquiry learning (POGIL), which be proved can promoting active learning and critical thinking.We assume that both two teaching methods may complement each other in emergency medicine education. Object: To evaluate the student’ learning effectiveness and acceptability of the process-oriented guided-inquiry learning (POGIL)-based flipped classroom model for teaching emergency medicine education. Methods: A total of 90 students majoring in clinical medicine at Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, were enrolled in this study. They were randomly divided into an experimental group and control group, with 45 students in each group. The experimental group adopted the POGIL-based flipped classroom model, and the control group adopted the traditional teaching model; teaching effectiveness was evaluated through tests, an operation exam and questionnaire surveys. Results: After the completion of the course, the scores of the two groups were compared. The theoretical and operational scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The learning interest, clinical thinking ability, and acceptance of the teaching model for the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than those for students in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The POGIL-based flipped classroom model can significantly improve students' scores, students' acceptance of the teaching model, and teaching quality.

One area of education which has not escaped efforts to improvethe Indonesian government is mathematics education. The Indonesian government must make good use of mathematics learning so that students can use the mathematical mindset to offset the pace of global competition. This research is an experimental research on the Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) model on the ability of mathematical connections in terms of self-regulated learning. The design used in this study was a 2×3 factorial. The research sample was 179 students from 7th grade in three State Junior High Schools in Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. The research sample consisted of an experimental group that subjected to the POGIL model and a control group that subjected to a direct learning model. This research instrument used was a written test and questionnaire. The data analysis technique used was a two-way ANOVA test with unbalanced cells and post hoc test. The results showed that: 1) the POGIL model produces better mathematical connection ability than the direct learning model, 2) Students with high category self-regulated learning have better mathematical connection ability than medium and low categories, and students with self-regulated learning the medium category have better mathematical connection ability than the low category.

We present adaptable activities for models of drug movement in the human body – pharmacokinetics – that motivate the learning of ordinary differential equations with an interdisciplinary topic. Specifically, we model aspirin, caffeine, and digoxin. We discuss the pedagogy of guiding students to understand, develop, and analyze models, progressing in complexity to a system of differential equations. We investigate the effects of parameter values that distinguish various health levels, and dosing that may have toxic effects. Our assignments include modeling in a student-centered, active, and increasingly inquiry-oriented setting through which the mathematics and biology inform and reinforce each other. We include supplemental information regarding inquiry methods, student learning outcomes, a student’s commentary about our activities, and support through mathematical communities such as POGIL and SIMIODE.

Communities of transformation work to achieve deep, transformational change in higher education teaching practice. This case study of The POGIL Project follows the development of a community of transformation principally focused on the propagation of effective teaching in STEM. We describe the origin of the community, elucidate the emergent decisions that shaped its growth, and offer a social network analysis of the connections between change agents that have been deeply engaged in the growth and development of the POGIL community. The case provides concrete examples of how the features of a community of transformation, most particularly the community network, can be intentionally fostered. We discuss the implications for STEM education reform in light of the case analysis.

The challenge in chemistry courses for nonscience majors (such as nursing majors) is not that the students cannot learn chemistry but that they think they cannot learn chemistry. With this in mind, the authors’ goal was to create a learning environment in which students would feel motivated to learn and would gain confidence in their ability to learn chemistry. In the one-semester chemistry courses for nursing majors described here, health-related scenarios (such as IV therapy, diabetes, blood chemistry, and brachytherapy) provide context, and POGIL activities provide process and content in a cooperative learning environment. In addition, strategic organization and alignment of learning outcomes helps students to focus on the concepts, principles, and theories that they are expected to learn in a meaningful way. Educational reforms in Qatar have seen the implementation of inquiry-based learning and other student-centred pedagogies. However, there have been few efforts to investigate how these adopted western pedagogies are aligned with the high context culture of Qatar. The study presented in this article highlights the implementation of a student-centred intervention called Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) in selected independent Arabic government schools in Qatar. The study followed a theoretical framework composed of culturally relevant pedagogical practice and social constructivism in teaching and learning. A mixed method research design involving experimental and comparison groups was utilised. Carefully structured learning materials when implemented systematically in a POGIL intervention helped Grade 10 science students improve their perceptions of chemistry learning measured from pre- and post-tests as measured by the What Is Happening In this Class (WIHIC) questionnaire and school-administered achievement test. The study further provided school-based mentoring and professional development opportunities for teachers in the region. Significantly, POGIL was found to be adaptable in the Arabic context.

This study aimed to examine the difference of Vocational High School students’ learning motivation after they were taught the topic of the electrolyte solution and redox reaction using POGIL model with SSI context, POGIL, and conventional learning. The research design used was quasi-experiment with the model of pre-test and post-test control group design. The research subjects were three classes with the similar initial ability. The data were obtained using SMTSL motivation questionnaire (r = 0.824) and analyzed using ANCOVA. The research results showed a significant difference in learning motivation between students taught using POGIL with SSI context, POGIL, and conventional learning. The students who were taught using POGIL with SSI context had the highest learning motivation compared to those taught using POGIL and conventional learning.

The principles of process oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) are applied to a binary solid–liquid mixtures experiment. Over the course of two learning cycles, students predict, measure, and model the phase diagram of a mixture of fatty acids. The enthalpy of fusion of each fatty acid is determined from the results. This guided inquiry experiment, which was developed as part of the POGIL-PCL (Physical Chemistry Laboratory) Project and tested at multiple institutions, relies on “green” materials and can be carried out by students using simple or sophisticated apparatus.

One aim of inquiry activities in science education is to promote students’ participation in the practices used to build scientific knowledge by providing opportunities to engage in scientific discourse. However, many factors influence the actual outcomes and effect on students’ learning when using inquiry materials. In this study, discourse from two physical chemistry classrooms using the Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) approach was analyzed using a lens of scientific argumentation. Analysis of the complexity of reasoning in students’ arguments using a learning progression on chemical thinking indicated that students did not employ very complex reasoning to construct arguments. To explain the distribution of reasoning observed, a separate analysis of the curricular materials was performed using the Task Analysis Guide for Science (TAGS). Results indicate a relationship between the task's targeted scientific practice and how students used evidence in their arguments as well as between the task's cognitive demand and the complexity of reasoning employed in arguments. Examples illustrating these relationships can be used to inform implications for design of inquiry materials, facilitation of classroom discourse, and future research. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background POGIL, using small groups of students, who assume the roles of leader, manager, recorder, and reflector to complete problem based activities in science courses, has demonstrated significant improvement in students' grades and course satisfaction in science courses and a nursing Fundamentals course. Using POGIL with nursing students in fundamentals nursing courses could help to improve final grades and course satisfaction while promoting active learning, critical thinking, and teamwork. Objectives To examine differences in final course grades, Assessment Technologies Institute, LLC (ATi) scores and course satisfaction in 2 groups of fundamentals nursing students where one group experienced Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) as a teaching strategy and one group did not. Satisfaction with performing in the varied roles used during POGIL was also examined. Design/Methods This quantitative descriptive study used a comparative design, with one group of students who experienced POGIL while analyzing case scenarios in class and a control group who did not experience POGIL. A t-test was used to compare final grades, ATi scores, and satisfaction survey results. Setting A mid-size, private university in the northeastern United States was the setting. Participants A convenience sample of pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students taking Fundamental in Nursing Courses during the junior semester. Results The experimental group (N = 63) had higher final course grades (p = 0.046), better understanding of the course material (p = 0.005), and greater satisfaction with grades (p = 0.008) than the control group (N = 75). Conclusion The results of this study revealed that Fundamental nursing students who experienced POGIL had significantly higher final grades and course satisfaction compared with students who did not experience POGIL. The active learning and teamwork experienced during POGIL, may be beneficial to students as they transition to practicing nurses. Additional research using POGIL with a variety of nursing courses could be beneficial in educating undergraduate nursing students.

We investigated the impact of assigning specific roles in Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) activities versus giving the same group activities without pre-assigned roles. We hoped to show that the group with additional structure would receive tangible benefits: more engagement with partners, greater comprehension of material, heightened content interest, and increased retention. Preliminary results suggest that the proportion of minimally participating students was not statistically significantly different, and neither were the individual assessments. The roled section did have higher scores overall in the course, both in the group activities and also in the final exam; however, the difference was small and not clearly statistically significant. Unexpectedly, disciplinary actions and post course surveys indicate a greater rate of plagiarism on both shared lab reports and individual homework assignments in the free-form group and this may be a factor for instructors to bear in mind when utilizing group activities.

In the traditional lab setting, it is reasonably straightforward to monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback. Such formative assessments can help students identify their strengths and weaknesses, and assist faculty to recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately. But in an online virtual lab setting, formative assessment has challenges that go beyond space‑time synchrony of online classroom. As we see increased enrollment in online courses, learning science needs to address the problem of formative assessment in online laboratory sessions. We developed a student team learning monitor (STLM module) in an electronic health record system to measure student engagement and actualize the social constructivist approach of Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL). Using iterative Plan‑Do‑Study‑Act cycles in two undergraduate courses over a period of two years, we identified critical components that are required for online implementation of POGIL. We reviewed published research on POGIL classroom implementations for the last ten years and identified some common elements that affect learning gains. We present the critical components that are necessary for implementing POGIL in online lab settings, and refer to this as Cyber POGIL. Incorporating these critical components are required to determine when, how and the circumstances under which Cyber POGIL may be successfully implemented. We recommend that more online tools be developed for POGIL classrooms, which evolve from just providing synchronous communication to improved task monitoring and assistive feedback.

Bioscience is a foundational unit (subject) of undergraduate allied health degree programs, providing students the scientific basis underpinning their clinical practice. However, despite its significance, bioscience is a difficult academic hurdle for many students to master. The introduction of active learning strategies, including small team-based guided-inquiry learning approaches, has been shown to significantly reduce this hurdle and improve assessment outcomes for the learner. Guided team-based activities can aid in this approach by also building broader skills and capabilities, like teamwork and communication, as well as subject-specific knowledge and skills, thereby positively influencing student assessment outcomes. This paper details the redesign and evaluation of two first-year Bioscience for Paramedics units with the introduction of guided-inquiry learning, as well as other active learning strategies, and assesses their impact on student performance. Results indicate that active learning used within a classroom and in the large lecture theater setting improved students’ grades with positive student perception of their learning experience.

This study explored the perceptions of teachers and learners regarding the use of Process Oriented Guided Learning Inquiry Learning (POGIL) to teach stoichiometry. A qualitative case study was carried out at two conveniently and purposively sampled township schools in Pretoria, South Africa. For this purpose, two Grade 11 physical sciences classes were identified where 48 learners and their respective teachers, who had previously been trained to teach using POGIL, gave consent to participate in the study. Data were collected using lesson observations, focus group interviews for learners and interviews for teachers. All data were transcribed and analysed with the aid of ATLAS.ti software for qualitative data analysis. The findings from the observations indicate that the learners were excited, motivated, and actively engaged in their work. They assisted one another by attempting to answer questions supported with justification. The findings from the focus group interviews indicate that the learners were excited to learn using POGIL and wished to use the method in other subjects, including mathematics. The learners had noticed improvements in their grades and understanding of abstract topics. The findings from the teacher interviews indicated that they appreciated POGIL because they found it useful in reducing misconceptions, increasing learner participation, increasing understanding and achievement, and that their learners were more engaged. The results indicate that POGIL increased learners’ interest, participation and active learning, while seemingly also improving the learners’ understanding of and achievement in abstract topics like stoichiometry. POGIL may be useful in increasing active learning and participation of learners which may lead to increased understanding and achievement.

In this paper, we will describe the experience of the authors in using process-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) in calculus at four institutions across the USA. We will briefly examine how POGIL compares to and fits in with other kinds of inquiry-based learning approaches. In particular, we will first discuss the unique structure of a POGIL activity, which includes a model and a learning cycle of specific types of questions. We then turn to a discussion of the particular characteristics of a classroom implementation of a POGIL activity, including facilitation strategies an instructor might use, the importance of specified student roles in groups, and different ways of reporting out. Finally, we provide some preliminary data on student pass rates in non-POGIL and POGIL calculus classrooms in the participating institutions. Throughout the paper, we use examples from student dialogues as groups were working through POGIL activities developed for Calculus I by the authors.

This one-semester, mixed methods study underpinning social cognition and theory of planned behaviour investigated the attitudes, self-efficacy, and experiences of 559 first year undergraduate chemistry students from two cohorts in modified process-oriented guided inquiry learning (POGIL) classes. Versions of attitude toward the study of chemistry (ASCI v2), and chemistry attitudes and experiences questionnaire (CAEQ) were adopted, modified, and administered to understand and gauge students’ affective outcomes before (pre) and after (post) POGIL intervention. Students’ post-POGIL perceptions of their attitudes, self-efficacy and experiences were statistically significantly higher. In addition to confirmatory testing of reliability of data obtained from ASCI v2 and CAEQ in an Australian POGIL context, the findings suggest that POGIL intervention provides positive affective experiences to students who are new to chemistry or have limited prior chemistry knowledge.
