The objective of this study was to evaluate microlearning as a preceptor development method compared to a traditional method of learning. Twenty-five preceptor participants volunteered to engage in a learning intervention about two preceptor development topics. Participants were randomized 1:1 to either a thirty-minute traditional learning experience or a fifteen-minute microlearning experience; participants then crossed over to the other intervention for comparison. Primary outcomes were satisfaction, changes in knowledge, self-efficacy, and perception of behavior, confidence scale, and self-reported frequency of behavior, respectively. One-way repeated measures ANOVA and Wilcoxon paired t-tests were used to analyze knowledge and self-efficacy, and Wilcoxon paired t-tests were utilized to assess satisfaction and perception of behavior. Most participants preferred microlearning over the traditional method (72% vs. 20%, p = 0.007). Free text satisfaction responses were analyzed using inductive coding and thematic analysis. Participants reported that microlearning was more engaging and efficient. There were no significant differences in knowledge, self-efficacy, or perception of behavior between microlearning and the traditional method. Knowledge and self-efficacy scores for each modality increased compared to the baseline. Microlearning shows promise for educating pharmacy preceptors. Further study is needed to confirm the findings and determine optimal delivery approaches.

There is growing empirical support for the benefits of developing psychological capital (PsyCap), and the effectiveness of PsyCap interventions (PCIs) in the workplace. However, to-date, PCI delivery modes have not been compared. The first study in this article compares a face-to-face to an online PCI. The second study compares an online PCI to a micro-learning PCI utilizing a mobile application. Results from 228 participants assessed three times (before, immediately after, and six weeks after PCI completion) support the effectiveness and comparability of the three delivery modes, but also highlight notable advantages for online and micro-learning.

In the COVID-19 pandemic period, most students felt lonely, accordingly their motivation for self-learning was low. The study aimed to increase their enthusiasm for work, and to improve their learning of biochemical subjects in the medical education programme during the pandemic period. Small parts of educational materials (microlearning) were presented in different formats such as videos, interactive education exercises, game-based quizzes and final exam was taken. The achievement of learning objectives of the course was evaluated by a survey. Students participating in daily activities gained higher self-confidence in learning and their final exam grade was higher compared to non-participating students (7.35 +/- 1.37 vs 7.06 +/- 1.88, p = 0.038). Most of the students agreed that daily activities (52%) increased their motivation to work. This approach might be proposed as a practice that supports distance learning, or even traditional education, especially in medical education that includes complex issues.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the results of the professional development program “Digital Pedagogy of the Modern University” held at the Philosophy Department of Moscow State University. In today’s increasingly mediated everyday life by digital technologies, the Internet, and virtual communicative environments, traditional education is getting a new lease of life. While digital devices have long been an integral part of modern life, social, cultural and educational institutions are struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of change. As the coronavirus spread across the world, universities moved classes online to prevent coronavirus spread. The program “Digital Pedagogy of the Modern University” was aimed not at the permanent movement from face-to-face to online education but the desire to implement an interim solution for emergency remote teaching and discuss the challenges. During the program, the organizers considered both methodological issues of creating courses and current trends in educational development, psychological aspects of network communications in a distance learning, and much more. The emphasis was made on the reflection of moving to online teaching. The survey on the results of the program showed that the impact of the experience of distance learning was a complex phenomenon. This study may serve as a basis for further discussion.

The constant change in technology, its impact on the electronic information environment and complex library users are forcing academic librarians to majorly change their skill set. Patrons no longer request for physical information but are accessing and retrieving information electronically. This study investigated the current training needs of librarians in Tanzanian academic libraries with the aim of developing microlearning intervention for training. Using a self-administered questionnaire, data were collected from 138 librarians in six Tanzanian academic libraries. Results identified the most important competencies and skills needed by the librarians and also identified barriers to librarians training. Identifying librarians' training needs will accelerate the training required for the librarians to gain current expertise based on need. Using microlearning for training will eliminate the barriers to librarians' training. Increasing training and learning efficiency is crucial if these academic libraries are to maintain relevance and continue to meet the needs of their users.

Virtual quizzing is a viable model for continuing education at a large scale, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. By leveraging technology, microlearning encourages mobile education that is engaging, flexible, and accessible. Learners reported that this format was effective and preferable to traditional methods of education, suggesting further opportunity for innovation.

Mobile microlearning platforms have increased over the years. Literature shows that platforms use specific instructions or media, such as videos or multiformat materials (e.g., text, audio, quizzes, hands-on exercises). However, few studies investigate whether or how specific design principles used on these platforms contribute to learning efficacy. A mobile microlearning course for journalism education was developed using the design principles and instructional flow reported in literature. The goal of this formative research was to study the mobile microcourse’s learning efficacy, defined as effectiveness, efficiency, and appeal. Learners’ knowledge before and after the mobile microcourse was analyzed using semistructured questionnaires as well as pretests and posttests to measure differences. The results indicate that learners of this mobile microcourse had an increase in knowledge, more certainty in decisions about practical applications, and an increase in confidence in performing skills. However, automated feedback, timed gamified exercises, and interactive real-world content indicate room for improvement to enhance effective learning.

Objective To determine the effectiveness of microlearning in improving an individual's capability for self-care. Study design Systematic review of the literature. Background The routine adoption of health seeking self-care behaviours can prevent or delay the appearance of various lifestyle diseases including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Microlearning delivers complex knowledge in fragments or bite-size ‘nuggets’ of information and has been applied as a novel intervention to improve individual's self-care capabilities. The aim of this research was to systematically review the literature to determine the effectiveness of microlearning in improving individual self-care capability. Methods A search was conducted on 15 July 2019 across five electronic bibliographic databases: EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus. Randomised and non-randomised controlled trials, controlled before-after studies and interrupted time series studies, published between 1 January 1990 and 15 July 2019 and looking at individuals of all ages were included in the search. The search strategy included a keyword search and a string of “(modality) AND (learning) AND (micro)”, which broadly described microlearning to cover all available articles that have used microformat learning interventions. The search was combined with keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms for self-care to identify studies of interests. Studies were screened by two reviewers independently and reported using a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) flowchart. Data from included articles were extracted using Cochran Data Collection Form. Risk of bias was assessed using Version 2 of the Cochrane Risk-of-bias or Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomised Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I). Results 1310 articles were identified in the initial search. A total of 26 manuscripts were included in the narrative synthesis after title and abstract and full text screening was performed by two reviewers. Outcomes of studies were categorised. A total of 23 studies measured cognitive level self-care capabilities-related changes, and 91% showed statistically significant improvements. Only 11 studies measured actual self-care behaviour changes, from which only 36% showed statistically significant results. From the 26 manuscripts included, 25 articles were evaluated as having moderate-to-high risk of bias. Conclusion Under certain conditions, or when combined with monitoring such as tracking daily medicine intake, microlearning can be effective in improving actual self-care behaviours. Microlearning can also positively influence individuals’ cognitive self-care capabilities but was largely ineffective in triggering actual self-care behaviour change. More studies are needed to investigate the effectiveness of microlearning in improving self-care capabilities amongst the general population at scale.

The potential benefit of employing a flipped learning approach, where learners are presented with the content preceding the class time, is to make a shift from traditional teacher-centered learning environments to more learner- and learning-centered ones. As this content delivery should be short, small, fine, and powerful, ‘microlearning’ as a new method of content-delivery in mediated environments, is suggested. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of this flipped learning approach on raising Iranian EFL learners’ self-regulation. This study was undertaken on 26 intermediate students in a nine-week course held at an English Institute in Tehran, IRAN. Of the participants, 13 learned English using a task-based language teaching (TBLT) approach in a non-flipped learning setting, whereas 13 studied English in a flipped learning setting. The data was collected in three sections: self-regulation survey flipped learning questionnaire and focus group interviews. Findings demonstrate that the latter were more aware of the learning process itself, playing a more active role in the classroom, while enjoying learning, as being more engaged in the learning progress, resulting in the development of their autonomy and self-regulated learning.

Changes in the current workplace are creating changes in traditional processes. One such process is the way that the millennial and subsequent generations joining the workplace consume learning. The hospitality industry is an ever-changing service industry in which organizations need to continue to adapt to stay relevant. Trained employees providing excellent guest experiences are a competitive advantage. Some barriers to training include lack of time, lack of resources, and changing learning expectations. The aim of this article was to propose a new learning model that integrates performance workflow and microlearning. Microlearning is an approach that focuses on a single concept, utilizing multisensory and multimodality in a focused short amount of time. It can be easily incorporated to the job workflow. The model, future research, and implications are discussed.

BACKGROUND: As technology advances, the gap between learning and doing continues to close—especially for frontline academic faculty and clinician educators. For busy clinician faculty members, it can be difficult to find time to engage in skills and professional development. Competing interests between clinical care and various forms of academic work (e.g., research, administration, education) all create challenges for traditional group‐based and/or didactic faculty development. METHODS: The authors engaged in a synthetic narrative review of literature from several unrelated fields: learning technologies, medical education/health professions education, general/higher education. The aim for this review was to synthesize this pre‐existing literature to propose a new conceptual model. RESULTS: The authors propose a new conceptual model, the Just‐In‐Time Learning Loop, to guide the development of online faculty development for just‐in‐time delivery. CONCLUSIONS: The Just‐In‐Time Learning Loop is a new conceptual framework that may be of use to those engaging in online, digital learning design. Faculty developers, especially in emergency medicine, can integrate leading concepts from the technology‐enhanced learning field (e.g., microlearning, micro‐credentialing, badging) to create new types of learning experiences for their end‐users.

This paper explores current understanding of microlearning as an effective model for professional development. From a theoretical perspective, the authors explore the rationale for microlearning by considering literature on competency-based education (CBE) and microcredentialing. Existing research specifically focused on microlearning is then considered, including essential design elements for microlearning lessons. The discussion concludes with suggestions for both further research and practice including design and development of microlearning lessons for professional development. We argue that microlearning can be a powerful model if design is appropriate.

Nowadays, older adults need to actively participate in society's processes and activities without being isolated, abandoned, discriminated against, or placed in a vulnerable situation. The COVID-19 pandemic shows a gradual increase in risk with age, which has led to confinement for this population sector. With these considerations, it is advisable to educate older adults on the general measures to prevent COVID-19, to adapt to today's society and decrease the likelihood of contagion. In this sense, a learning artifact about COVID-19 prevention measures, through a methodology for creating learning capsules for older adults designed to educate from home through mobile devices. Moreover, for evaluating the perceptions of the users about the proposed learning artifact, a case study where older people participated was proposed; here, the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used.

Introduction Faculty development (FD) is an element critical to the professional growth of medical educators and a necessary component in developing effective educators. FD offerings are prevalent across academic institutions; however, faculty report they are unable to participate in these initiatives due to time limitations and competing priorities. The snippet FD approach can address these concerns but requires training for FD providers to be effectively used. Methods This snippet train-the-trainer workshop was presented to approximately 310 physician and nonphysician medical educators at a national medical education conference. The session incorporated multiple teaching modalities (e.g., lecture, demonstrations, structured small-group snippet development groups, and large-group debriefs). A 14-item Likert-scale survey was used to obtain participant evaluations. Narrative feedback was collected using constructed response items. Results Ninety-five percent of respondents (125 of 132) planned to use snippets as an FD strategy at least once per year, with 38% (50 of 132) noting they planned to use snippets at least four times per year. Respondents indicated that FD snippets could positively impact educational practices (94%) and that the session was a valuable use of their time (94%), as well as expressing interest in a snippet repository (90%). Discussion A brief FD train-the-trainer workshop for snippets can successfully prepare FD providers to create and use this approach.

Introduction Medical faculties are responsible for the training and development of future physicians. Therefore, they must learn the teaching methods. Considering their extensive roles, adult learning theory, and technological developments, the best solution is e-learning. This study extracted the views and preferences of clinical faculties about the electronic faculty development programs. Methods Clinical faculty members and medical education and e-learning specialists from medical universities in Iran participated in this qualitative content analysis study during 2017-2018. Data were collected with purposive sampling method by 18 semi-structured interviews and 2 focus groups with 11 participants. The data were analyzed using the conventional qualitative content analysis method. Validity and accuracy of data were provided on the basis of Guba and Lincoln criteria. Results Five categories including "Technology infrastructure" (Presentation, Platform, E-Learning environment), "learner" (Features, Motivation), "Program management" (Blending, Interaction), "content" (Design, Application, Organization), and "evaluation" (Learner assessment, Program evaluation) were extracted. Conclusion Faculty members prefer to attend e-learning courses that focus on individualization, blended learning, and mobile learning. The best solution is to use the microlearning approach, that is, short pieces of content focusing on a learning goal that can be presented by all electronic devices in the form of any kind of media, and is in fact the learning fingerfood.

This paper presents a cognitive conversational agent for use in teaching and learning processes named THOTH (Training by Highly Ontology-oriented Tutoring Host) that is capable of formulating and enunciating a well-defined set of small talk segments in a Q&A (Question and Answer) interaction. The small talk structures are placed within the tutoring conversation by an agent designed as a cognitive assistant, in order to make communication smoother and less formal, presenting a more “concerned” behavior. Twelve small talk segments are suggested, included in conversation stages such as opening and closing the conversation, maintaining the rhythm and managing learning. We also explore some branches of the theoretical assumptions and concepts grounding THOTH, such as Dennett’s intentional stance, Bloom’s taxonomy and microlearning theory. In order to measure the perception and effects of using THOTH, we performed a quantitative and qualitative study with a group of students from a course in Applied Artificial Intelligence over one semester. The outcomes are classified into two main categories of analysis – interactivity and intentionality – informing the discussion on the potential uses of a small talk agent as a valuable resource in tutoring interaction, and also raising some points for improvement. In addition to this study, we also drew a small talk profile for this group of students revealing what structures and topics they use the most, as well as a partial performance analysis that allows identifying some effects on learning.

Mobile microlearning targets a new audience of learners: employees and workers outside of offices, using smartphones for flexible, anywhere, anytime training. The term ‘mobile’ emphasizes that the content is made for small screens of smartphones. According to literature and industry reports, micro-lessons are generally between 30 s and 5 min. While research shows that mobile microlearning is a promising approach, it remains unclear how the current systems have been ‘built’: What are the underlying principles of such platforms? The goal of this study was to explore mobile-microlearning platforms and to unpack their inherent design principles. We applied different methods: First, we reviewed literature in both academic publications and industry reports in two iterative rounds. Second, we conducted interviews with industry professionals, e.g., directors and entrepreneurs of mobile- and micro-learning systems. Results show a set of 15 principles regarding technical issues, pedagogical usability of micro-content interaction and sequenced instructional flow. They can be used to detect issues and challenges in existing mobile platforms and may inform meaningful design principles for future development. The results expose that a more critical eye on the learning design implied in the small-screen platforms is needed e.g., future systems may include learning designs for higher order thinking skills.

Background. Teaching hospitals are the primary locus of training for residents, and the afforded microlearning environments can affect their level of satisfaction, competence, and learning processes. Since limited attention has been directed towards evaluating the microlearning environment, how Saudi postgraduate residents perceive it remains unknown. Objectives. This study evaluated the microlearning environments for major clinical specialties in a tertiary care teaching hospital. It also investigated the association between satisfaction levels and the age and gender of the participants, as well as their stage and specialty. Methods and Methods. A questionnaire-based, observational study was conducted using a prevalidated HEMLEM tool for data collection. Data were collected using the QuestionPro® survey tool and analyzed using SPSS version 23 software. A one-way ANOVA and t-test were performed to compare different subgroups. Results. In total, 129 residents participated in the study, representing a response rate of 87.16%. The overall mean value for microlearning environment satisfaction was 50.21. Females scored higher relative to males. Maximum satisfaction with the microlearning environment was observed in the age group 25–30 years and among internal medicine residents. Conclusion. Overall, a satisfactory score on the HEMLEM tool was recorded, suggesting the majority of residents are satisfied with the microlearning environment at KFHU. Supervisors, program directors, and curriculum planners could use our findings to further improve the educational climates within their training specialties.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and pursuant to the governments' order of citizens remaining at home, several countries were required to transition from face-to-face instruction to an online model to provide higher education to their students. While factors affecting the use of online learning are diverse and have been studied by models of use and acceptance of technology, this cross-sectional study explores the factors unique to the current emergency situation that influence students' use and acceptance of emergency online learning. Moreover, it proposes a model to predict a student's cognitive engagement in Mexico, Peru, Turkey, and the USA. This is a quantitative study with an exploratory and descriptive scope and cross-sectional design. Data was collected from 1009 students from the four countries, who completed surveys anonymously. The factors analyzed were attitude, affect, and motivation, perceived behavioral control (ease of use, self-efficacy, and accessibility), and cognitive engagement. The data was analyzed using descriptive, correlation, and regression analysis. The predictive model shows that students' attitude toward online learning impacts their cognitive engagement in Mexico, Peru, and the USA. Furthermore, self-efficacy is a significant moderator for cognitive engagement in all four countries. The model also shows that each country has different determinants for cognitive engagement. Understanding the factors that affect the use of emergency online learning is essential for the success and/or achievement of its maximum benefits in situations like a global pandemic. Limitations of this study have been identified as use of convenience sampling, and an inability to explore factors related to instruction and system attributes. Professors who did not teach online learning lacked knowledge about online educational strategies and used the technological resources that were immediately available to them. Therefore, research that explores the use of instructional strategies and the use of technological systems during emergency online learning is necessary. This study includes suggestions to incorporate open educational resources that use microlearning and emphasizes the importance of student self-efficacy; because it was predictor of cognitive engagement in all four countries. Faculty and higher education institutions can and should develop strategies to increase students' sense of self-efficacy.

The aim of this study was to develop and pilot a 52-week Microlearning curriculum on person-centered dementia care in nine nursing homes. The goal was to evaluate the usability and application of Microlearning as a tool to increase staff knowledge and improve perceptions of people with dementia, thus increasing their ability to deliver person-centered care and their job satisfaction. Findings indicate that participants enjoyed the flexible, 24/7 access to training and found that the immediacy of the format encouraged them to apply their learning directly to practice. Staff knowledge and attitudes toward people with dementia were positively impacted by the training, as was job satisfaction. Further research to test the efficacy of Microlearning compared to usual training is warranted, as are coordinated policy development efforts that can guide the implementation of best practices in the use of Microlearning as an innovative training modality in nursing homes.

Background Cultivating healthy lifestyle beliefs (HLBs) can result in positive health outcomes for students during their nursing program. Purpose The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of short wellness interventions (microlearning) in nursing courses on reducing stress and anxiety and enhancing HLB. Methods Microlearning wellness interventions were offered to graduate and undergraduate nursing students in this cluster randomized intervention study. The Perceived Stress Scale 4, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7, and Healthy Lifestyle Beliefs Scales were administered. Student perceptions were evaluated using a short answer narrative. Results The intervention group reported higher HLB (P = .15), lower anxiety (P = .06), and lower stress (P = .06) compared with the control group after adjusting for baseline differences. Student comments were favorable and included enjoying the activities, weight loss success, and mindfulness strategies. Conclusions Incorporating wellness interventions into nursing curricula demonstrates a positive trend toward reducing anxiety and stress and improving HLB.

The quality of continuing medical education (CME) is frequently measured using the Moore’s Level of Outcome framework, with higher-level outcomes (5 and above) perceived as more valuable than lower-level outcomes (such as Level 3 – knowledge). Higher-level outcomes require more rigorous evaluation, increasing the time requirements of an interaction; however, there is a trend among adult learners towards a preference for shorter, more informal education such as microlearning. This allows for greater reach but prevents outcome evaluation to higher levels. We explored the utility of combining microlearning with more traditional eLearning formats (“microlearning programme”) to increase participation while retaining the ability to measure knowledge- and competence-level outcomes. Comparing two recent programmes with similar content run previously (“comparator programmes”), we identified a slight improvement in completion of evaluation activities associated with the microlearning programme. However, the significant reach microlearning affords presents a clear need to bridge the gap between participation and evaluation. Considering these two cases, we concluded that future microlearning initiatives should incorporate evaluation at the point of education, providing a combination of microlearning and microevaluation to drive knowledge gain in a form that is measurable in terms of educational outcomes.

The Covid-19 Movement Control Order imposed by the government converted the delivery of lessons to online learning in the education sector. Pharmaceutical chemistry is a core subject for pharmacy students and first-year students were taught the elucidation of the absolute configuration of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). The objective of this study is to investigate the pharmacy students’ perceptions and performance on learning new knowledge related to the concept of absolute configuration on API through micro-learning. Students were introduced and assessed on the stereochemistry of new terminologies through micro-learning activities. Various 3D molecular model capture in video format was uploaded on YouTube(YT) and embedded in the Google Form(GF) online assessment. The students’ video navigation was captured with YT video analytics, students learning performance was through GF quiz assessment responses, and the student’s attitudes through questionnaire survey. In conclusion, the performance of student pharmacists in learning and applying new knowledge delivered through online distance micro-learning was comparable to face-to-face active learning. Both YT video analytics and GF responses allowed real-time monitoring and interventions. Nonetheless, students required more time to learn new knowledge online compared to face-to-face active learning. In conclusion, the designed virtual micro-learning enabled students to learn bite-sized new knowledge while training their spatial ability through the application of 3D molecular models with reinforcement through quizzes. The virtual micro-learning design is practical and economical without much technological investment or training for both the educator and learner with easy access in an open distance learning environment and post-Covid. This paper presents a method for predicting the evaluation results of learners interacting with a context-aware microlearning system. We use ASUM-DM to guide different data analytics tasks, including applying a genetic algorithm that selects the prediction’s highest weight features. Then, we apply Machine Learning models like Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Tree, Decision Tree, SVM, and Neural Networks to train data and evaluate the context’s effects, either success or failure of the learner’s evaluation. We are interested in finding the model of significant context-influence to the learner’s evaluation results. The Random Forest model provided an accuracy of 94%, which was calculated with the cross-validation technique. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the model can accurately predict the evaluation result and relate it to the learner context. The model result is a useful insight for sending notifications to the learners to improve the learning process. We want to provide recommendations about learner behavior and context and adapt the microlearning content in the future.

El joc és accessible a través d'una pàgina web, on es troba un manual sobre com editar el videojoc. In this project I created a videogame that can be used in education. It can be edited by the teacher (who sets some questions and some answers) and the student plays answering those questions. The game is accessible through a web page, where you will find a tutorial on how to edit the game.

Making universal access to education compatible with different paths of learning is one of the great challenges of the last century. Technology has provided solutions to access information, for communication and collaborative work. Blockchain emerges as a technology that can be useful for the development of an evaluation model of individualized learning itineraries in mass university subjects. In this line, the Edublocs project has been designed and executed, an initiative where these itineraries have been designed, incorporating elements of peer learning, team-teaching, PLEs, microlearning, technology-enhanced assessment... The objective of the Edublocs project is to design and implement a system of recording the results of activities through Blockchain that allow the student to follow a personal itinerary, and the teacher-tutor of the subject to carry out a formative evaluation and an accrediting appraisal of their work. The project is well underway in the evaluation of the implementation process. The experience with some elements of the design and the experimental execution in a formal university context during the present academic course, has allowed us to obtain important indications on the viability and relevance of the use of Blockchain in education. These, together with the explanation and justification of explaining the context of its applicability, will be laid out in the broad development of the article.
