Whether the mother tongue (L1) should be included or excluded in foreign language classes has been debated by researchers and there is no consensus on this controversial issue. However, most of the studies are conducted on the tertiary level, and there is very few on the primary & secondary levels. Therefore, this study explores the perspectives of English teachers working in primary schools in comparison to high schools affiliated with national education. It also investigates for which language skills both of those groups find the use of mother tongue (Turkish) relatively effective and their justification behind the use of L1 in their classes in which English is taught as a foreign language. A total of 30 primary and 30 high school teachers working in Usak participated the study voluntarily. The study has employed mixed-method and data was collected through a questionnaire developed by Kuru and Tekin (2019). Moreover, semi structured interviews were conducted to obtain qualitative data with randomly selected primary school (8) and high school teachers (8). By means of SPSS, descriptive statistics were conducted and qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Findings of the quantitative data indicated that majority of both primary and high school teachers support the use of mother tongue in EFL classes. Additionally, there is no significance difference between the perceptions of primary school and high school teachers regarding the use of L1. Finally, results of the qualitative data advocate the findings of the quantitative data.

The study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of oral repeated reading on children with autism while teaching English. Its findings might serve as a basis for the development of reading instructional materials in English and help English teachers prepare related lesson plans for such impaired students. Every day the number of people with ASD is increasing and what’s more, most of them should go on studying with their disabled peers in public schools. The researcher only ventured to study 3 male student respondents enrolled in a Primary School in Turkey who were medically diagnosed with autism with speech disfluencies and learning / reading comprehension problems. The researcher combined Dolch Sight Word Test and the Woodcock – Johnson Test to measure their reading and learning abilities. It was aimed to evaluate students’ cognitive processes as well as their reading performance. The results were calculated by the Word Recognition (WR) test formula and displayed on tables. Finally, to determine CWA’s reading levels Gickling and Armstrong measuring technique was used. Test results of the study showed that oral repeated reading technique can be effectively used with such children to increase their reading fluency and comprehension of the vocabulary in English and as an intervention to increase overall fluency., Çalışma, otizmli çocuklara İngilizce öğretirken sözlü tekrarlarla yapılan okumanın onların İngilizce öğrenmedeki faydasını ve bu bulgular sayesinde İngilizce öğretim materyalleri geliştirilerek İngilizce öğretmenlerinin ders planları oluşturabilmesine katkı sağlamak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Her geçen gün Otizm Spektrum Bozukluğu olan kişilerin sayısı artmakta ve dahası, bu bireylerin pek çoğu devlet okullarında normal öğrencilerle okumaya devam etmek durumundadırlar. Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de bir ilkokulda okuyan, doktorlar tarafından hafif otizm teşhisi konulmuş ama konuşma – okuma bozukluğu çeken 3 erkek öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu öğrenciler çocuk doktoru tarafından hafif-orta derece otizm’li olarak tanılanmış ve yaşları sırasıyla 8, 9 ve 8 şeklindedir. Araştırmacı; Dolch Side Word Testini ve Woodcock – Jonhson testini bu Otizmli öğrencilerin, okuma ve öğrenme becerilerini ölçmek için bir araya getirdi. Burada öğrencilerin okuma performansı ile aynı zamanda bilişsel süreçlerinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Sonuçlar Word Recognition (WR) ile formüle edilerek tablolaştırılmıştır. Son olarak Otizmli öğrencilerin, öğrenme düzeylerini tanılamak için Gickling ve Armstrong tanılama tekniği kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları, sözlü tekrarlanan okumaların, otizmli öğrencilere belirli bir metinde İngilizce akıcılık ve kavrama yeteneğini ve İngilizce'de genel akıcılık ve anlama becerisini arttırmada etkili bir yöntem olarak kullanılabileceğini göstermiştir.

It is revealing information about yourself to others. This revealing is believed crucial in developing a fully intimate relationship between teachers and students which might give cause for students’ engagement, class participation and might boost their foreign language learning. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate the perception of appropriateness of teacher self-disclosure of the pre-service language teachers in Turkish context and to compare whether there is a significant difference between teachers’ beliefs who attended a pedagogical formation course program and who did not. The data was collected from 140 ELL junior students and 77 pedagogical formation course students at a Turkish university through the appropriateness of teacher self-disclosure scale. Compared to the related studies for the appropriateness of pre-service teachers’ perceptions of self-disclosure, the study presents some important similarities but also differences in terms of the topics used in the questionnaire. İngilizce eğitimi birçok kitap, makale veya görüş yazılarında dil sınıflarında edebiyat kullanımının nedenlerini açıklayan en önemli konulardan biri olmuştur. Araştırmacılar tarafından doğrulandığı gibi edebiyat kültürel zenginlik ile öğrencilerin dilsel ve kişisel gelişimine yardımcı olan özgün ve motivasyon sağlayan bir materyaldir. Dil öğretmenleri teoride edebiyat kullanmanın faydalarının farkında olmalarına rağmen, edebiyatı ?bilinçli olarak? pratikte kullanmazlar. Bu nedenle, Kütahya'da özel bir dil okulunda 2010-2011 öğretim yılında A2 seviyesindeki 14 öğrencinin katılımı ile dil sınıflarında edebiyat kullanılmasını ?yeniden vurgulamak? için, bu çalışma yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın veri toplama aşaması tanımlayıcı ve deneysel olmak üzere iki türlüdür. Tanımlayıcı kısmını dil sınıflarında edebiyat -drama- kullanımına yönelik bir tutum anketi oluşturur. Deneysel kısmı on haftalık bir sürede yapılmıştır ve bir kelime testi öğrencilerin kelime öğrenme düzeylerini araştırmak için kullanılmıştır. Araçlardan elde edilen bulgular, SPSS programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Öğrencilerin edebiyata özellikle tiyatro oyunlarına yönelik tutumlarını öğrenmek için Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar Testi yapılmıştır. Farklı kelime öğrenme düzeylerini incelemek için Mann - Whitney Sıralar Testi kullanılmıştır. Tüm tutum anketleri ve kelime testlerinde olumlu ve önemli sonuçlar elde edilmiştir. Genel olarak, öğrencilerin dil sınıflarında edebiyat -tiyatro oyunları- kullanımına yönelik olumlu tutumları vardır ve uygun edebi eserler öğrencilerin kelime yeterlilik düzeylerini artırmak için yardımcı olmuştur.Anahtar Kelimeler: Edebiyat, Tutum, Tiyatro Oyunları, Kelime Yeterlilik Seviyesi The subject of teaching English has been one of the important issues in many books, articles or opinion papers explaining the reasons for using literature in language classes. Literature is an authentic and motivational material which helps to the students? linguistic and personal development with cultural enrichment which is asserted by researchers. Although language teachers are aware of the benefits of using literature in theory, they don?t use it ?consciously? practically. For that reason, to ?re-highlight? literature use in language classrooms this study is conducted in 2010-2011 education year, at a private language school in Kütahya, by participation of 14 A2 level students. Data collection of the research is twofold; descriptive and experimental. The descriptive part is made of an attitude questionnaire towards the using of literature, namely drama, in language classrooms. The experimental part is conducted in a ten-week period and a vocabulary test is used for searching students? vocabulary learning levels. The findings which are obtained from the instruments, are analyzed by SPSS programme. To find out the attitudes of students towards literature specially theatrical plays Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test is carried out. To examine the different levels of vocabulary learning levels Mann-Whitney Rank Test is used. In all attitude questionnaires and vocabulary tests positive and significant results are found. Overall, students have positive attitudes towards the usage of literature ?theatrical plays- in language classrooms and using appropriate literary works help students to increase their vocabulary proficiency levels.Key words : Literature, Attitude, Theatrical Plays, Vocabulary Proficiency Level 156
