Excellence in reading and math enable children entry to all of the professions. This is especially true for the nursing profession. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide background information on the national crisis in reading and math achievement among school children, present the methodology of the Saturday School church-based approach to enhance reading and math skills, and the seven year outcomes.

Abstract

A study of a middle school system explains the middle school concept of science education and the problems faced by the transformation from the junior high school program. Middle school science instruction is enhanced, but the various interdisciplinary teams do not meet specialized science department needs. There is no coordination between teachers in the areas of equipment funding, fairs and exhibitions.

Abstract

A study investigated the impact of haptic augmentation of a science inquiry program on students learning about viruses and nanoscale science combined with computer visualizations and comparing the influences of a PHANToM (a sophisticated haptic desktop device), a Sidewinder (a haptic gaming joystick), and a mouse (no haptic feedback). Results showed that the addition of haptic feedback from the haptic gaming joystick and the PHANToM provided a more immersive learning environment.

Abstract

This study investigated how middle grades students provided with free access to manipulative materials use these mathematical tools in classrooms where their teachers are identified as Control-Oriented and Autonomy-Oriented. Also of interest in this investigation was how Control-Oriented and Autonomy-Oriented teachers administered the free access treatment in their classrooms. A Pre -- Post -1 Post -2 design was used with two treatments. During Treatment 1, teachers used the manipulatives for mathematics instruction using the strategies learned in the summer professional development workshop. During Treatment 2, teachers provided students with free access to the manipulative materials. Results indicated teachers' control orientations--control versus autonomy--were significantly different. The study also reveals that when students are allowed some measure of control in the selection and use of manipulative materials given the time to overcome their initial apprehension, they will spontaneously and selectively use these materials effectively as appropriate mathematical tools to mediate learning. Abstract

The article focuses on how several computer-based instructional programs can be used to engage middle school students in learning about cells. The Cell Exploration Instructional Program incorporates haptic technology and enables them to manipulate a virtual cell model in a three-dimensional (3-D) workspace. The Virtual Cell allows them to use their computer mouse to turn and cut on a 3-D representation of a plant cell's parts. The Virtual Cell Web Page prompts the users to take a Virtual Cell Tour enable them to manipulate on various computer-generated images of an animal cell and its organelles.
