- Abstract
Objective/Context: This article discusses the modernization of medical education in Brazil between 1951 and 1964, following the creation of the Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP, for its initials in Portuguese) at the University of São Paulo (USP). The analysis emphasizes the tensions in the rapprochement between Zeferino Faz, the founding director of FMRP, considered a communist, and the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), an international philanthropic agency, for the development of basic sciences such as biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology. Methodology: The documents used in the study were collected at the Rockefeller Archive Center in New York and the Historical Museum at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School and analyzed using the evidential paradigm proposed by Carlo Ginzburg. The evidential paradigm pays close attention to small details in the document, considered "signs" of processes that are not very explicit. Originality: The original contribution of this text consists of a better understanding of the strategies used by the RF to finance the FMRP, which differed in many moments from its institutional norms and the anti-communist orientation of the North American government. This finding contrasts with an entire contemporary bibliography that reiterates the persecution of these individuals. Conclusions: The study reveals the contradictions in the trajectory of Zeferino Vaz and the actions of the RF in search of the desired modernization of medical education in Latin America. NATIONAL curriculum , *STUDENT activities , *MEDICAL education , *MEDICAL schools , *CURRICULUM - Abstract
According to the increasing number of graduated physicians, the National Curriculum Guidelines (NCG) for medical schools and, consequently, your Pedagogic Project which contemplates the Curriculum Contents and Extracurricular Activities (EA), modifies itself in the intention to build, during the graduation, a active physician involved in the improvement of the population's health, especially in Primary Care. This systematic review of the literature aimed to characterize the profile of EA in medical graduation. The articles for this review were searched in the Portal of Periodicos (CAPES) and in the Virtual Health Library (BVS) using the combined descriptors "Medicine", "Medical Education" and "Extracurricular Activities", being selected those in portuguese published between 2011 and 2020, that were synthesized with references and quantitative data in Microsoft Office Excel and Tabwin. Characterization of multiples EA were found within the 11 chosen articles, being the majority of them about Academics Leagues, Extension Projects and Scientific Initiation, especially through experience reports. The analisis was realized considering the findings within the papers and the NGC, and were identified the predominance of welfare actions without longitudinal interaction in Extension, while and Leagues reports it was observed larger interest in the study of specialties. Through this analysis was observed the need of a qualified dialogue with students in order to provide a better understanding of the EA propositions and also that future studies are required to be developed towards expanding the knowledgeand address the challeges about the EA. Undergraduate scientific research is part of the integral development of the medical student, but it has limitations, such as reduced opportunities to participate in research projects, fear of rejection by the editorial, absence of research culture, lack of advisors, disinterest of teachers and lack of funding (1). Despite the low student scientific production in Latin America (2), a significant increase was evident, attributing it to the creation of scientific societies. In Peru, the Peruvian Scientific Society of Medical Students (SOCIPEM) was founded on August 27, 1992 in the city of Cusco, which would later change its name to the Peruvian Medical Student Scientific Society (SOCIMEP).

PROFESSIONAL ethics , *MEDICAL education , *GROUNDED theory , *FATIGUE (Physiology) , *PARTICIPANT observation - Abstract
Objective: To describe the interactions of some students from two Medicine programs in Colombia related to the hidden curriculum. Methodology: Hermeneutic study, which used ethnography and grounded theory, through the application of participant observation in five practice scenarios and eleven in-depth interviews. The data analysis was done with open, axial and selective coding, typical of the grounded theory, which generated a matrix of the paradigm. Results: Studying Medicine implies being part of a hierarchy from inspiring to excessive. The demand of medical education to train a tireless and blameless doctor, the competition to be admitted to each rank and the fear of making mistakes exacerbate the negative functioning of the medical hierarchy. This hierarchy is based on the power of knowledge that allows abuse. The above triggers exhaustion, frustration, lack of interest and affects professional ethics, aspects that spoil the doctor in training. Conclusion: The hidden curriculum determines the doctor's training more than the formal curriculum. Recognizing and reflecting on the hidden curriculum from the academic community makes visible, in future curricular reforms, the role it plays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TEACHING methods , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *DIRECT instruction , *ACTIVE learning , *MEDICAL schools - Abstract
In recent decades, Higher Education Institutions have been committed to adapting medical teaching to new educational paradigms, integrating new tools and active methods into the teaching-learning process. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the teaching methods formally adopted in the teaching-learning process of Medicine courses in the country. This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative and analytical approach. Data were obtained by consulting the portal of the Medical Schools of Brazil, pedagogical course project and institutional websites. Of the 258 schools analyzed, 200 (77.5%) adopted active learning methodologies as their central teaching method. The North (94.7%) and Northeast (83.6%) regions were the ones that concentrated the largest number of institutions that formally incorporated methodologies that privilege active participation in comparison to the traditional teaching method. Furthermore, active methods were observed more frequently in private schools (80.8%) and in small/medium-sized municipalities (82.6%), demonstrating a growing movement of courses to adapt to active teaching methods. The most recent medical schools, created in 2013, were the ones with the highest rates of active methods compared to traditional ones (94.1% versus 75%, p=0.014). Despite advances, the inclusion of active methods in medical curricula is still a major challenge, as the integration of active learning methodologies requires consistency with the pedagogical proposal of the course, evaluation, planning and engagement of the multiple social subjects that participate in this pedagogical process. Students satisfaction is the difference between their expectations and personal perceptions of quality. This quantitative research aimed to investigate which factors best explain the satisfaction of students when subjected to different teaching modalities. The sample came from a Brazilian Medicine course that uses problem-based learning. The time frame was the second semester of 2020, during social isolation and use of remote modality (n=249), and the second semester of 2021, after returning to face-to-face classes (n=249). Regression analysis indicated that satisfaction was explained by different factors, depending on the teaching modality. In the remote modality, satisfaction was influenced by the "Student" factor (57.1%), dependent on teacher stimulation. However, in the face-to-face modality, satisfaction was influenced by the "Class" factor (57.3%), related to student protagonism and teacher attitudes in the learning process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To improve pediatric hematology and oncology outcomes, there is a recognized potential for partnerships between low- and high-resource institutions within health care systems. The SickKids Caribbean Initiative is a partnership between health care professionals at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada, and seven Caribbean institutions across six countries (Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago). The primary aim of the SickKids Caribbean Initiative has been to improve the outcomes and the quality of life of children in the Caribbean aged <18 years who have cancer and blood disorders. This article describes five key activities undertaken within the SickKids Caribbean Initiative, including providing education and training, assisting with case consultations and diagnostic services, developing local oncology databases, engaging in advocacy and ensuring stakeholder engagement, and coordinating administration and project management. To report experience on activities that took place in the virtual learning context of the postgraduate course in Primary Health Care (PHC) at the Public Health School of Ceará (PHS/CE). Experience report presented of the author's experiences in teaching activities conducted with students of the Graduate Course in PHC of the Fortaleza Family Medical Program, based on the use of digital platforms during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The need to maintain the connection with the program's specialization students in their practice environments is justified because in this way there is a repertoire to influence the creation of guidelines that aim to supply professionals in their working contexts. Confabulating needs without looking at everyday life while the reality is left behind is the formula for creating a universe where education does not become a good practice with patients, families, and communities. In recent years, medical students' absenteeism has been investigated in depth. Classroom deviant behavior is a richer concept than truancy behavior, but there are few researchers on this aspect in China. There are still many issues worth discussing about deviant classroom behavior. In this paper, questionnaires were given to 977 medical students to collect relevant data. After classifying the data, correlation analysis and multilevel linear regression analysis were used to conclude that academic performance and group ethical norms have a negative impact on medical students' deviant behaviors in class. Group ethical norms have a significant positive influence on academic performance, and descriptive ethical norms and imperative ethical norms of group ethical norms have a significant influence on academic performance. The four dimensions of academic performance: academic performance, task performance, interpersonal promotion, and social comparison have a negative influence on medical students' deviant behaviors in class. Descriptive ethical norms have an inverse effect on medical students' deviant behaviors, while imperative ethical norms have no significant effect on deviant behaviors in class. Group ethical norms as a category of ethical norms clearly have significant implications for improving academic performance and reducing their transgressions in class. Reinforcing group ethics in medical students will not only contribute to their professional ethics upon graduation, but also to their academic performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

STUDENT financial aid , *INCOME , *PHYSICIAN supply & demand , *HEALTH education , *PROFESSIONS - Abstract
Despite its countless benefits, it is a fact that one of the greatest difficulties that the Unified Health System faces is related to the shortage of doctors. Bearing in mind that a series of issues can influence the students' decision about which workspaces they want to work in, investigating these influences can contribute significantly to the development of measures, policies, strategies, which contribute to attract more professionals to the public service. Therefore, this study aimed to show that factors explain the intention of the medical student to choose to work in the SUS and to verify if there are differences in this intention between students graduating from the Interdisciplinary Bachelor in Health and those who do not have BIS as a previous graduation. For this purpose, questionnaires were applied to 438 students and the SPSS software was used for data processing. From this, it was identified that family income, receiving student aid and methodological experiences with clinical cases, medical narratives and theater are influencing factors in this choice. Regarding the influence of income, it is believed that the view of the profession as a method of social ascension may be one of the justifications. Meanwhile, regarding methodological experiences, it is believed that using creative strategies is fundamental. Thus, it is believed that this study can contribute to the design of health education and training policies that consider such information, and in this way, can encourage students to choose SUS as a work space, helping to strengthen it. Objective: To discuss the importance of communication in the doctor-patient relationship and collect information about perception during their practice. Materials and methods: A literature review and a survey were conducted (105 doctors in Argentina participated). Results: Most professionals report communication difficulties, which hinder care. Physicians expressed difficulties communicating bad news, primarily in clinical areas, and the ability to put themselves in the patient's shoes is essential for giving such news. Young people significantly consider that the communication of bad news depends on practice. Conclusions: Communication skills are critical. Evidence suggests that it is necessary to look into the acquisition of communication skills and ethical values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reflect on the factors involved in mental illness among physicians, with emphasis on the development of Burnout Syndrome (BS) in the context of Primary Health Care. Reflective essay carried out between August and October 2021, based on the experience of a doctor in a Primary Care formative setting. The literature evokes deviations from the work process that put the mental health of front-line professionals at risk. Thus, there is a need to restructure the training and work processes, focusing on promoting the health of the team with various resources that aim to reduce the burden. BS emerges as a public health problem and should be put on the agenda so that protective environments can be built for those who, taking care of the health of others, forget their own. MEDICAL quality control , *MEDICAL students , *HEALTH services accessibility , *SOCIAL stigma , *EDUCATIONAL planning , *MEDICAL literature - Abstract
Medical literature has shown that significant portions of the general population, including healthcare professionals, have a highly stigmatized view of mentally ill patients, which can lead to low quality health care and difficult access to treatment. To address this issue, we evaluated the mental health syllabus of a private medical school located in the capital city of a Southeastern Brazil State. That syllabus was conceived based on active educational methodology and in partnership with the local public mental health system, where all the practical academic activities took place. We conclude that the suggested model decreased stigmatization of the mentally ill among medical students and was positively evaluated by them. To achieve that goal, educational strategies had to be included that promote direct interaction of students with mentally ill patients and the beginning of medical school seems to be the right moment to offer this type of activity. This experience also showed that an efficient collaboration between the university and the Brazilian public health system may promote positive changes in mental health training of future Brazilian physicians. HEALTH literacy , *HUMAN anatomy , *PEDAGOGICAL content knowledge , *HUMAN anatomical models , *INFORMATION & communication technologies , *STUDENT-centered learning - Abstract
This article presents the planning and development of an ict-Mediated (information and communication technologies) course of conceptualization of anatomical bases called Pre-Anatomy for first-year undergraduate students of the academic program of Medicine and Surgery of the Universidad del Valle (Cali-Colombia). This work followed the epistemological premises of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK), and four modules were designed for teaching, learning, and evaluation: 1) Anatomical theory, 2) Anatomical drawing, 3) Use of virtual platforms, and 4) Medical literacy. This article presents the activities planned for the classes of the first module, based on interviews with expert teachers in the area to learn about the content representation (CoRe) of fundamental concepts of Human Gross Anatomy, and the teaching objectives, which included the integration of scientific competencies through the construction of anatomical models. The process of planning and development of the course allowed making a proposal of teaching, learning, and evaluation (T-L-Ev) oriented to move from a transmissionism emphasis, in which the teacher is the center of the process, to a student-centered T-L-Ev. ABSTRACT Introduction. In a multicultural country such as Colombia, ethnoeducation is an important component of health education, because it promotes the quality of life of ethnic minorities based on the community’s potential, practices, habits, experiences and approaches that promote overall health awareness. The purpose of this article is to perform a narrative review on the background of ethnoeducation and its impact on health. The development of inter-cultural skills among students in health fields would enable the future professional to perform their roles with adequate cultural relevancy, respecting the values, traditions and history of the communities. Topics discussed: Worldwide, ethnoeducation has been highly relevant, and some international organizations have worked on its implementation for decades. In Colombia, several legal and regulatory instruments have been developed to implement ethnoeducation. However, close to 86 % of the ethnic populations do not have access to education in accordance with the established principles. The importance of ethnoeducation has been highlighted in several countries in that it has achieved positive results such as a reduction of morbidity and mortality through educational activities that promote health and help prevent diseases. To achieve this, it is essential that the planned activities be integrated into the communities’ cultural perceptions. Conclusion: Although local, national and international guidelines have been established, ethnoeducation continues to be a challenge. It is necessary to increase efforts in order for ethnoeducation to achieve the objectives that have been set out from a theoretical perspective.
