This article discusses the prevalence of contact allergy to sodium metabisulfite (SMB) in Spain. The study found that out of 6,471 patients who were patch-tested with SMB, 2.1% had a positive reaction. The most commonly affected locations were the hands, and the most frequently involved products were topical medications and cosmetics. However, only 25.34% of positive reactions were considered currently relevant. The study concludes that the low current relevance of sensitization to SMB in Spanish patients suggests that it should only be included as a candidate allergen in the Extended Standard series in Spain with caution.
