We provide the first joint analysis of the secured and unsecured money markets of the euro area using bank-level data. After the Lehman crisis, two important substitution mechanisms emerge: banks with higher credit risk offset reductions of unsecured borrowing with secured funding. Riskier banks replace unsecured lending by granting more secured loans. However, high leverage and reliance on short-term funding hamper banks' ability to substitute. Moreover, banks enduring money market strains contribute to the credit crunch. Overall, our findings suggest that the secured segment of the euro money market contributes to financial stability, mitigating systemic effects such as short-term funding strains and contagion.

Eine Rückkaufvereinbarung, wegen des englischen Begriffs repurchase agreeement auch Repo genannt, bezeichnet einen mit Staatsanleihen besicherten, kurzfristigen Kredit zwischen Banken. Der Repo-Markt ist der für die Refinanzierung von Banken wichtigste Markt. Repos spielen daher eine zentrale Rolle für die Allokation von Liquidität und Wertpapieren und für die Implementierung der Geldpolitik. Diese Dissertation ist eine Sammlung von drei Beiträgen zur Struktur und Funktionsweise des europäischen Repo-Marktes. In allgemeinen Repo-Geschäften kann die kreditaufnehmende Bank die als Sicherheit dienende Staatsanleihe aus einer vorgegebenen Liste frei auswählen. Im ersten Kapitel (Collateral choice) analysiere ich, welche Anleihen von Banken ausgewählt werden. Die zuletzt ausgegebene Staatsanleihe wird dabei am häufigsten als Sicherheit verwendet, dies ist überraschend, da es eine besonders hohe Nachfrage nach dieser Anleihe gibt. Diese Beobachtungen reflektiere ich in einem theoretischen Modell, welches einen direkten Zusammenhang zum Anleihenmarkt abbildet. Je nach Staatsanleihe und Marktumfeld ergeben sich verschiedene Zinssätze für Repo-Geschäfte. Im zweiten Kapitel (Safe asset carry trade, gemeinsam verfasst mit Angelo Ranaldo) präsentieren wir die erste systematische Analyse der Bepreisung von Repos. Hauptverantwortlich für Variationen in den Zinssätzen sind dabei Aspekte von Sicherheit und Liquidität, welche sich zwischen den Staatsanleihen unterschieden. Basierend hierauf bilden wir einen Carry, welcher nicht nur für die Bepreisung der Zinssätze im Repo-Markt relevant ist, sondern auch für die Bepreisung von Staatsanleihen im Anleihenmarkt. Ein Repo-Geschäft kann sowohl zum Leihen von Geld als auch zum Beziehen einer Staatsanleihe verwendet werden. Im dritten Kapitel (Money market disconnect, gemeinsam verfasst mit Angelo Ranaldo und Hannah Winterberg) dokumentieren wir, dass sich der besicherte Repo-Markt vom unbesicherten Geldmarkt entkoppelt, wenn in Repo-Geschäften das Motiv des Beziehens einer Staatsanleihe im Vordergrund steht. Zwei Aspekte des geldpolitischen Rahmenwerks haben zu dieser Entkoppelung beigetragen: der Zugang zu Zentralbankeinlagen und die Bedingungen für den Ankauf von Staatsanleihen durch die Zentralbank. Unsere Ergebnisse sind für die Analyse verschiedener geldpolitischer Massnahmen von Bedeutung., The repurchase agreement (repo) market is the primary short-term funding market; it plays a key role in the efficient allocation of liquidity and financial securities and is crucial for the implementation of monetary policy. This dissertation is a collection of three research essays on the structure and functioning of the euro area repo market.

This paper develops a discrete-time epidemiological model for the spread of economic crises across sectors in the United States for the period 1952-2015. It is the first to use an epidemiological approach with macroeconomic (Flow of Funds) data. An extension of the usual one-period Markov model to a two-period setting incorporates the concept of downturns that may either precede a crisis or from which the sector may recover and avert a crisis. The results indicate that the nonfinancial business and private depository institutions & money market mutual funds sectors are highly contagious while the monetary authority is the least contagious.

Press releases on monetary policy play an important role in the communication policy of the central bank. These press releases explain key rate decisions and provide signals about the future direction of the central bank’s monetary policy. Information signals can influence the expectations of financial market participants and increase the predictability and effectiveness of monetary policy. There are not enough research papers dedicated to the text analysis of the Bank of Russia press releases and the assessment of information signals. Hence, this article examines the impact of information signals about monetary policy on the money market rate, term and credit spreads. First, we estimate latent Dirichlet allocation to determine the topics of information signals. Second, we use sentiment analysis to construct signals about easing or tightening of the monetary policy. Third, the impact of signals about the future monetary policy on the money market indicators is assessed using the exponential GARCH model. Empirical research has shown that signals of future monetary policy easing are associated with lower money market rates and term spreads, and an increase in the credit spread. The result proved to be resistant to various ways of vectorizing the text of press releases. This study examines money market and foreign exchange market dynamics in Nigeria by estimating the dynamic correlation and volatility spillovers between Nigeria Naira/US Dollar Bureau De Change (BDC) exchange rate and interbank call rate with data from January 2007 to August 2019. The study employs a dynamic conditional correlation form of GARCH model (DCC-GARCH) to access the nature of correlation, while an unrestricted bivariate BEKK-GARCH (1, 1) form of multivariate GARCH model is utilized to investigate shocks and volatility spillover of the rates. The estimated DCC-GARCH (1, 1) reveals that interest rate and exchange rate are dynamically linked negatively, suggesting that exchange rate (or interest rate) is inversely sensitive to interest rate (or exchange rate) in Nigeria. This result was substantiated by the estimated BEKK-GARCH(1, 1) model. Furthermore, the effects of news (shocks spillover) are bi-directional across the markets. However, volatility spillover is unidirectional, from exchange rate to interest rate, suggesting that, calming the volatility in foreign exchange market does guarantee moderation of volatility in the money market, whereas the reverse is not the case. The results underscore the growing influence of foreign exchange market in the financial space of the Nigerian economy. Thus, the study recommends that foreign exchange policies aimed at maintaining exchange rate stability should be sustained, having found exchange rate to be more effective in moderating interest rate volatility in Nigeria.

The LIBOR manipulation scandal of 2008 spurred extensive policy debates regarding the importance of market-based reference rates. The alternative reference rates committee (ARRC) eventually identified the secured overnight financing rate (SOFR) to be a suitable replacement to LIBOR. In this study, we question the underlying process behind the choice of SOFR as a replacement for LIBOR. Both academic literature and regulatory bodies fail to identify a consistent definition and criteria of a good reference rate. We fill in this gap in the literature by providing an empirically testable ‘checklist’ to evaluate any potential money market rate to gauge its suitability as a reference rate. We also carry out an empirical evaluation of various money market rates against our criteria and identify the 1-month AA non-financial commercial paper rate as the best available replacement for LIBOR.

This paper reconceptualizes the impact of US finance on European banking as a process of ‘extroverted financialisation’. This impact is commonly associated with the rise of ‘market-based banking’ (MBB). While MBB exposes how commercial banking has been deeply transformed by disintermediation and borrowing from wholesale markets, the concept struggles to capture the distinct imperatives of this process, and its uneven nature. By contrast, the concept of extroverted financialization captures the problems European banks faced adapting to US-led financialization. More specifically, the concept portrays the financialization of European banking as an outcome of new funding practices, called liability management (LM), developed in US money markets from the 1960s onwards. I show how this put pressures on European lenders because it allowed US banks to leverage extensively. To catch up, European banks had to improve their access to liquid USD, whichforced them to find a way into the Eurodollar markets and into the US money markets. To operate in these markets, they had to gradually implement the practices of LM. This process of extroversion made their own banking models highly fragile and dependent on US money market funding. Despite adopting LM, they could not reduce their structural disadvantages vis-a-vis US banks.

Despite international financial disintegration, we document a dramatic increase in dollar borrowing among leveraged Eurozone corporates during the Great Financial Crisis. Using loan-level data, we trace this increase to the twin crisis in the credit market and in funding markets. The reduction in the supply of credit by Eurozone banks caused riskier borrowers to shift to foreign banks, in particular US banks. The coincident rise in the relative cost of euro wholesale funding and the disruptions in the FX swap market caused a rise in dollar borrowing from US banks, especi ally for firms in export-oriented sectors. Although global bank lending is often reported to amplify the international credit cycle, we show that foreign banking acted as a shock absorber that weathered the real consequences of the credit crunch in Europe.

This study investigates monetary policy transmission to the interest rates in Indonesia, focusing on changes in pricing behavior that may have occurred after the shift of benchmark policy rates in August 19, 2016. We analyzed monthly data on money market, deposit, and lending rates from November 2011 to December 2019. Two specifications of the error correction model capture asymmetric adjustments. We find that the new policy rate regime has improved the response of money market rates. However, the rigidity of bank retail rates has increased. Specifically, lending rates have become more rigid upwards, as lenders have become more responsive to monetary easing than to monetary tightening.

The Ottoman Empire introduced paper money called kaime which was also a bill of exchange bond to bearer in order to finance the reforms of the Tanzimat and to overcome the financial and fiscal difficulties of the previous period, and adopted a foreign exchange stability policy and a fixed Exchange rate system to stabilize its currency which gradually lost its value against the foreign currencies due to ongoing adulterations. Related to the developments that took place over time, the monetary policy of the government has also changed; interest-free paper money was eventually introduced to the market by decreasing the interest rates gradually. Due to the Crimean War and the economic and financial difficulties experienced during the war, the amount of paper money in the market was increased uncontrollably. The fact that the money market in the Ottoman Empire was not sufficiently organized and the weakness of the state control over the market caused intensive speculative activities to be carried out by the bankers and brokers who took on intermediary duties in the market. Following the Crimean War, the increasing influence of Western powers on the Ottoman finance was a factor that restricted the speculative activities. The Random Walk Hypothesis suggests that the future prices cannot be predicted using the current information, thus speculative gains will not be possible. In this study, the Random Walk Hypothesis in the paper money market and the Exchange rate market in the Ottoman Empire are analyzed with reference to economic and historical facts. For this purpose, Variance Ratio Test and unit root test with structural break were adopted. The results of the analysis, on a large scale concluded that the Random Walk Hypothesis is valid in both markets and that there are economic and political developments behind the structural breaks.

If cryptocurrencies are perceived as financial innovations that could disrupt domestic and international financial systems, it becomes imperative for economists to incorporate these virtual currencies into existing money market models. Cryptocurrencies, when fully adopted by the general public, would transmit into the financial system via money demand. Cryptocurrencies serve as money and non-money assets and have no perfect substitute, whereas they are perfect substitutes for M1. Therefore, how much impact would the popularity of cryptocurrencies have on domestic and international capital mobility? To isolate interest rate differentials across countries, the Mundell-Fleming model that assumes a constant interest rate in domestic and world economies was applied. Cryptocurrencies acquired in past periods that are acceptable worldwide would abrogate exchange rate differentials. This study theoretically finds that fiscal and monetary policies would have different impacts on income in economies with high cryptocurrency circulations compared to economies with only M1. Also, there is a critical interest rate where cryptocurrencies would be more attractive to investors than other non-money assets. Moreover, using the Keynesian aggregate income and aggregate expenditure model, without interest and exchange rate differentials, the worldwide use of cryptocurrencies in international trade would unveil the link between the twin deficits and international capital flows.

PurposeTo verify the effectiveness of the monetary policy, the impacts of monetary instruments on overnight spread under the interest rate corridor (IRC) are examined. The People's Bank of China (PBC) has operated the IRC since 2014. To understand the impacts of monetary instruments on overnight spread before and after the IRC framework, the complete samples are divided into two periods.Design/methodology/approachTo model the overnight spread, an exponential GARCH (EGARCH) approach is used which can examine the interbank market interest rates for monetary policy purposes. The overnight money market plays an important role in the implementation of monetary policy.FindingsChinese interest rate liberalization and the implementation of IRC affect the overnight spread in the short-term financing market. Before the implementation of the IRC, the key factor to affect the overnight spread is mainly affected by the PBC's monetary policy control on the liquidity supply side. After the implementation of IRC, the overnight spread can be the largest part explained by the liquidity demand side and the PBC's multiple monetary instruments have significant impacts on the reduction of overnight spread.Originality/valueThe overnight spread has recently been influenced by various factors that are directly or closely related to the monetary policy instruments and the interest rate policy of the PBC. Chinese interest rate liberalization and the implementation of interest rate corridor policy affect the overnight spread in the short-term financing market.

The instability of the domestic economy and the influence of external factors lead to the deviation of the basic macroeconomic indicators from the normative equilibrium values. This requires the development of a qualitatively new integrated approach to the analysis of the main macroeconomic indicators of the development of the economy sectors in order to identify the effective institutional and financial foundations for stimulating economic progress of our state. The purpose of the work is to study the theoretical positions of the financial and real sectors of the economy and conduct an econometric analysis of the indicators of their development. Results. Theoretical positions about the place of the real and financial sectors of the economy in the general economic system of the state has been systematized in the article. The main indicators (KPIs — key performance indicators) of the studied sectors of the economy has been revealed. The econometric analysis of the main indicators of the development of the economy sectors has been based on real (actual) values corrected for inflation and has been presented in the classical theoretical Hix-Hansen equilibrium model on commodity and money markets (IS-LM). The data of the National Bank of Ukraine on the dynamics of the monetary base (B) and monetary aggregates (M0 — M3), and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine on GDP (Y) and inflation (СРІ) has been used in the research. The econometric analysis has showed a significant correlation between the nominal and real GDP, money supply and money base indicators, which are almost synchronized during 2001—2017. The presence of strong interdependence between the real values of these indicators has been confirmed by very high correlation values, which are ranged from 0.94 to 0.99. Almost functional dependence of the money supply on the monetary base has been explained by the availability of the existing mechanism of monetary multiplication, and the money market multiplier tends to increase. The high statistical dependence between the real NBU discount rate and the weighted average rate on all instruments has been revealed. It proved the effectiveness of the main instrument for implementing the discrete monetary policy of macroeconomic regulation. The negative significance of the correlation coefficients between the interest rates and the quantitative indicators of the real and financial sectors of the economy has shown that the traditional theoretical compromise in choosing the main problems to be solved in the economy to ensure macroeconomic stability is also typical for Ukraine. The application of the «expensive money» policy to combat high inflation negatively affects the real money supply, but taking into account the very high dependence between it and GDP, slows down the growth of the real sector of the economy, and vice versa. The obtained two-factor regression equation with very high reliability has explained by the retrospective changes in the real money supply. The most important factor for it is real GDP. This confirms the strong interconnection between the real and financial sectors of the economy in the process of developing the economic system. Quantitative indicators of development of both sectors are under the influence of long-term trends. They have their own nature and often depend on trends in the development of the world economy and finance as well as internal problems that are often predictable. Conclusions. The results has been obtained suggest that the synchronous long-term dynamics of real GDP, money supply and money base, as well as the statistical interdependence between them, firstly, signal that in Ukraine the rules of a market economy have already been formed and can be applied effectively in such conditions of the methods and tools of macroeconomic regulation, and secondly, processes occurring in one of the specified sectors of the economy will necessarily reflect on another. Therefore, solving macroeconomic problems requires a balanced and integrated approach taking into account the nature and strength of the interdependence between different processes and phenomena.

We investigate the time‐varying relationship of funding liquidity (FL) and market liquidity (ML) in a Markov regime‐switching model. By using a comprehensive U.S. TRACE dataset, we provide strong evidence that FL and corporate bond ML are interlinked, and their impact on each other is highly regime‐dependent. We find that FL and ML exhibit a large‐and‐positive mutual impact when money market is tight and equity market is volatile. But in normal regimes, FL is found to have a negative impact on ML with a much smaller magnitude than those in stressed regimes. Furthermore, FL is more stable than ML with less regime changes. Our article offers insight on the important mechanism by which central banks can improve ML through the funding market.

We estimate the effects of quantitative easing (QE) measures by the ECB and the Federal Reserve on the US dollar-euro exchange rate at frequencies and horizons relevant for policymakers. To do so, we derive a theoretically-consistent local projection regression equation from the standard asset pricing formulation of exchange rate determination. We then proxy unobserved QE shocks by future changes in the relative size of central banks’ balance sheets, which we instrument with QE announcements in two-stage least squares regressions in order to account for their endogeneity. We find that QE measures have large and persistent effects on the exchange rate: The typical ECB or Federal Reserve expansionary QE announcement in our sample resulted in an increase in the relative balance sheet of about 20% and, in turn, in a persistent exchange rate depreciation of around 7%. Regarding transmission channels, we find that a relative QE shock that expands the ECB’s balance sheet relative to that of the Federal Reserve depreciates the euro against the US dollar by reducing euro-dollar short-term money market rate differentials, by widening the cross-currency basis and by eliciting adjustments in “residual” deviations from interest parity. Changes in the expectations about the future monetary policy stance, reflecting the “signalling” channel of QE, also contribute to the exchange rate response to QE shocks.

The article examines the importance of state regulation of money market interest rates in Ukraine, namely loans with low interest rates in the context of comparison with global practice of their application. The paper examines the experience of economic development of Eastern countries and the conditions of borrowing the “Eastern model of development” in modern Ukrainian realities and the importance of loans with low interest rates for the economy of Ukraine. State regulation of interest rates in modern economies occupies a prominent place in the arsenal of central banks and allows to implement measures of tactical influence and achieve the desired parameters of the monetary sphere and economic conditions. Regulation of interest rates at the current stage of transformation processes in the world is gaining new meaning and can promote economic growth and price stabilization. As a result, the author concludes that for the active development of the country’s production potential it is necessary (taking into account international experience) to create conditions for attracting investment, including national, fair lending (reduction of interest rates on loans), tax holidays, which will stimulate production activity. population and economic growth.

The manipulation of Euro Interbank Offered Rate (Euribor) is a problem with great impact on international financial markets. This paper focuses on two aspects of the Euribor benchmark rate for the period 2004–2018: the specific features that make the Index more vulnerable to manipulation and the potential for Index manipulation over the studied period. To address the first aspect, we examine the range and the standard deviation of daily quotes, as well as the panel banks’ quote submissions to the Euribor administrator, the maximum and minimum quotes and the daily variation of submissions. As a result, we found a group of five banks with similar and extreme submission patterns, which might be a sign of manipulation. Regarding the second aspect, changes are made in the quotes submitted by panel banks by switching minimum and maximum daily quotes. Thus, potential for Euribor manipulation is measured as the difference between the observed Euribor rate and the estimated rate recalculated with adjusted quotes. The results indicate that potential for Euribor manipulation is higher when the number of banks in the panel is lower, when there are many banks involved in the manipulation of the Index, and in times of financial distress.

After almost three decades of the New Economic Policy of the Government of India, now it is high time to assess the policy prescriptions so far followed to converge the financial markets, especially the stock and money market, objectively with the robust statistical and econometric tools. This paper attempts to measure the integration amongst stock and some select segments of Indian money market. The results of Johansen and Juselius (1990) cointegration test suggest strong integration amongst the markets and statistically significant presence of all the markets in the cointegration space. Granger causality expectedly runs from money to stock market and Forecast Error Variance Decomposition Analysis indicates the rigidity of the stock and treasury bills market only, hence, warrants more attention of the Indian policy planners for adequate steps to make these markets more flexible.

This paper provides a new index of money market and bank lending interest rates in Spain for 1900–1935. New archival evidence reveals a structural change in market interest ratesvis-à-visthe official rates charged by theBanco de España(BdE). Before 1914, the BdE rate operated as a ceiling to market rates. The outbreak of the First World War caused market rates to soar and the BdE rate started operating as a floor, as bank liquidity started depending on the BdE. This was accompanied by new banking legislation introduced in 1921, which changed the collateral framework through which the BdE lent to banks. The resulting interest rate index illustrates the persistent impact of financial deglobalisation caused by the outbreak of the War.

The interest rate pass-through describes how changes in a reference rate (the monetary policy, money market, or T-bill rate) transmit to bank lending rates. This paper reviews the empirical literature on the interest rate pass-through and systematizes it by means of meta-analysis and meta-regressions. The paper finds systematically lower estimated pass-through coefficients in studies that focus on transmission to long-term lending rates, consumer lending rates, and average lending rates. The interest rate pass-through is significantly influenced by country macro-financial and institutional factors. The estimated pass-through tends to be stronger for economies with deeper capital markets (measured by market capitalization). Interestingly, central bank independence rising from lower levels can reduce interest rate pass-through, while central bank independence rising from already high levels can boost the pass-through.

This paper has the goal of analyzing the association between asymmetric information, measured by Corwin-Schultz bid ask spread estimator, and stock prices in the Brazilian stock market. Daily data from 64 corporations over a period of 10 years were examined using the Johansen-Fisher panel cointegration technique in order to assess the validity of asymmetric information measurements in shorter periods than in previous studies. The results indicate that asymmetric information anticipates stock prices over a period of up to two days in a theoretically consistent way. Future research may control the results via traditional finance variables. JEL classification: C33; D82; G32. Resumen Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo analizar la asociacion entre informacion asimetrica, medida a traves del estimador Corwin-Schultz, y las cotizaciones bursatiles en el mercado de valores brasileno. Los datos diarios de 64 empresas, en un periodo de 10 diez anos, Mse examinaron utilizando la tecnica de cointegracion de panel de Johansen-Fisher para evaluar la validez de una medida de información asimetrica en periodos mas cortos que los estudios anteriores. Los resultados indican que la informacion asimétrica anticipa los precios de las acciones en un periodo de hasta dos dias, de una manera teoricamente consistente. Las investigaciones futuras deberian controlar los resultados mediante variables financieras tradicionales. Resumo Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar a associacao entre informação assimetrica, medida pelo estimador Corwin-Schultz, e cotizações bursateis no mercado brasileiro de ações. Foram analisados dados diários de 64 empresas, durante um peridodo de 10 anos, pela tecnica de cointegracao para dados em painel de Johansen-Fisher, para avaliar a validade de uma medida de informação assimétrica em períodos inferiores aos de estudos anteriores. Os resultados indicam que a informação assimetrica antecipa opreco das ações em um período de ate 2 dias, de maneira teoricamente consistente. Pesquisas futuras deveriam controlar os resultados mediante variaveis financeiras tradicionais.

The excess money supply did not lead to a rapid rise in the price index, which in turn triggered inflation. In this case, the redetermination of the demand for money is particularly important. At the same time, with the continuous expansion of the capital market and the rapid development of the virtual economy, the virtual economy is gradually deviating from the real economy. When selecting assets, microentities often incorporate virtual economic assets into investment considerations. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a money demand model that considers the impact of virtual economic assets. This paper uses the asset selection of microentities as the microfoundation to establish a money demand model to explain its economic significance. And based on the money demand model established, a dynamic equilibrium model of the money market was established, and the stability of the dynamic equilibrium point of the money market was verified through mathematical deduction. Based on the dynamic equilibrium model of the money market, the impact of money supply was analyzed. In order to verify the correctness of the aforementioned theory, this paper conducts an empirical analysis. Through cointegration analysis and the vector error correction model (VECM model), the correctness and applicability of the established money demand model are verified, and money demand, total social wealth, spreads between expected stock returns and interest rates, and real estate expectations are found. There is a long-term equilibrium relationship between the rate of return and the interest rate. The total amount of social wealth, the expected rate of return on stocks, and the interest rate spread will have an impact on the demand for money in the short term.

Global markets have become more integrated, making co-movements of international interest rates possible. In this paper, we investigate the causal linkage between US and Eurodollar (London) interest rate using the Granger causality test in quantiles. This permits us to examine causality over interest rate distributions not covered by the usual causality test. We therefore test causality in different quantile ranges. A common attribute with previous studies that investigate the causal linkages among interest rates across international money markets is the assumption that the causal relations between international interest rate changes are constant across different interest rate levels. In this study, we allow for asymmetric quantile causal effects. Our empirical results suggest a quantile causal effect between US interest rate and Eurodollar interest rate. US interest rate Granger cause Eurodollar interest rate. The effect is positive at lower quantiles and negative at upper quantiles. On the other hand, Eurodollar interest rate Granger cause US interest rate, but the effect is negative at the lower quantile and positive at the upper quantile. The estimated causality coefficients at both the lower and the higher quantiles are significantly different from the median coefficients.

This chapter marks the first step toward the construction of the ISLM/ADAS model which will power macroeconomic analyses in the chapters to come. At this stage we have completed an intuitive overview of the broad links between global capital flows, fiscal, and trade imbalances, and their effects on interest rates and exchange rates.

The article examines emerging financial capitalism in Russia and its recent developments, the rise of collateralised finance and trading in repo markets. The main conclusion is that a combination of sophisticated speculative practices with a strong state presence in financial markets is a distinctive feature of Russia after 2008. The decoupling of the financial system from the credit supply to the real sector is still continuing after the collapse of Communism. The role of the capital markets is restricted to short-term liquidity management in money markets, which rose after 2011 due to an increased provision of state liquidity. The existence of a large monetary overhang accumulated within the Russian banking system and its interconnectedness with collateralised markets are discussed. The development stages of the repo markets and the main collateral types are considered in relation to the expansion of the state liquidity supply. This study provides an additional perspective within the ongoing debate on contemporary state capitalism in emerging markets.

The article examines the role of the money market in the local currency in the financial market, analyzes the prerequisites for the formation of the money market and the factors necessary for its development. The study examines both the ambitious policy reforms and the specifics of money market formation in the implementation of financial sector development plans and the solution of specific tasks for the development of money markets, the development of financial markets in developing and bordering countries. The main idea of the study is that the formation of stable and money markets is closely linked with the formation of a monetary policy regime based on a flexible exchange rate and the desire to reach a low and stable level. In other words, reforms aimed only at the development of money market rate policy, should take certain steps mechanisms, using projected interest rates and a relatively flexible exchange to achieve low and stable inflation rates. At the same time, the implementation of such a regime is unlikely to be successful without efforts to create appropriate money markets. In the economic literature authors believe that central banks manage long-term interest rates on loans through the short-term money market interest rate in order to maintain price stability and balanced economic growth. However, macroeconomic theory tells extremely sparingly about the interest rate channel of monetary policy. In general terms, it conducts changes through a term premium and expectations in the government securities market. In applied research, economists only observe the final reaction of lending rates to the non-financial sector. Economists traditionally believe that the interest rate channel requires a developed financial sector. In some cases, in particular, at zero rates or in a small open economy that depends on the exchange rate, the interest rate channel works poorly. However, its effectiveness can be maintained without developed financial markets. The answer is the pricing of banking loans.

We find that Treasury floating rate notes (FRNs) trade at a significant premium relative to the prices of Treasury bills and notes. This premium is directly related to the near-constant nature of FRN prices and is correlated with measures reflecting investor demand for safe assets. Money market funds are often the primary investors in FRNs, and the FRN premium is related to flows into funds with fixed net asset values, but not to flows into funds with variable net asset values. These results provide strong evidence that the FRN premium represents a convenience yield for the mark-to-market stability feature of FRNs.

This paper examines how the quantitative easing (QE) policy conducted by Japan, EU and the US raised Hong Kong’s real estate prices through activities in carry trade and in Hong Kong’s real estate investment trust (H-REIT) market. The empirical results demonstrated two new channels of impact. The first new channel shows that Japan’s QE policy did affect the H-REIT prices in money market, which then led to a rise in office price after a lag of three months. The office prices were more persistently affected by the channel through the H-REIT than through the stock prices. Another new channel shows that the QE policy by Japan, the EU and the US since 2008 directly pushed up the office prices. These two new channels imply that the QE policy spilled over to not only the money market, but also the real estate market through the H-REIT market and carry trade. Moreover, the empirical finding is stronger in the price of the ordinary grade office than in the high-grade office, suggesting these new channels have already become common. Moreover, even though introducing control variables in the real estate economics literature, the results are robust.

This paper reviews the retail interest-rate-control deregulation in China over the 1993-2015 period and provides a preliminary assessment of the PBC's replacement monetary framework. I show that the interest-rate controls triggered the development of deposit substitutes that banks used to circumvent the restrictions, which in turn drove deposits out of commercial banks.This gave rise to concerns about deterioration of bank profits and build-up of financial frangibility, which have pushed up the PBC's deregulation acceleration over the post-2012 period. I quantify the distortionary effects of these controls: disintermediation, a rising shadow banking system and financial repression. Despite the official lift-off of the controls, the retail interest rates are still subject to the PBC’s window guidance and other pricing mechanism guidance. The interest-rate corridor does not function well in confining money market rates. This suggests that the PBC adopt a target money market rate system.

It is well known that variability of money market interest rates is time variant. Further, the ability to control money market interest rates by central bank is also important for effectiveness of inflation targeting. As a contribution to understanding the transmission between main monetary policy rate and money market interest rates an innovative formal framework of money market interest rate variability reflecting variety of macroeconomic shocks was developed. Subsequently, a middle size macro-financial model with exogenous variables is estimated by the Bayesian method with sign restriction to identify main sources of macroeconomic shocks. Parameters of this model are estimated from a dataset of six countries with long-lasting history of inflation targeting. Using the estimation results, three measures of ability to control of money market interest rates are derived and they are used to compare time and country specific conditions of the effects of main policy rate on money market interest rates. We consider these measures as an important contribution for evaluating suitability of VAR models as well as the one for measuring the ability of central bank to control money market rates. Our findings are interesting and the novel approach is applicable to solve similar problem.
