The debate and evidence surrounding IMF policies are vast and complex. In this study, we will explore the literature to provide a more complete narrative surrounding the relationship between IMF policies and health from the 1980s onward. We are specifically interested in this period due to our existing awareness that IMF programs started to garner harsh criticisms from public health communities in the 1980s. The mapping and synthesizing of IMF’s market-oriented reform policies may better inform policymakers, public health authorities, health advocates, and other health-related stakeholders, regarding policies and actions that should be adopted and avoided, especially in times of economic downturn, to ensure the protection and promotion of health equity. This scoping review is the first of a four-parts mixed methods study that aims to assess health reform policies in Europe as recommended by the IMF/EU.
