The feasibility of providing greater flexibility for users of industrial data mainly collected within the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system is examined. For flexibility, data collected must be sufficiently detailed and processed so as to make many uses possible. However, to reduce costs, data must be collected in a fixed classification system. It is proposed that a complete commodity classification should be the focus for data collection, while labor use should be included through a form of occupational classification.
