As applied and agricultural economists, Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) members work to provide high quality research and data to inform policy decisions. How do we ensure that decision makers see, and use, our research findings or data in the policy formulation process that includes many actors? The paper provides a framework for how information flows during the policy process and a strategy for effective research and data built around five equally important attributes: relevance; quality; trust; diversity, equity, and inclusion; and communication. Examples illustrate how the attributes lead to high impact information and focus on two federal research and statistics agencies, the Economic Research Service and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Introduction: Health economics is a thriving sub-discipline of economics. Applied health economics research is considered essential in the health care sector and is used extensively by public policy makers. For scholars, it is important to understand the history and status of health economics—when it emerged, the rate of research output, trending topics, and its temporal evolution—to ensure clarity and direction when formulating research questions. Methods: Nearly 13,000 articles were analysed, which were found in the collective publications of the ten most specialised health economic journals. We explored this literature using patterns of term co-occurrence and document co-citation. Results: The research output in this field is growing exponentially. Five main research divisions were identified: (i) macroeconomic evaluation, (ii) microeconomic evaluation, (iii) measurement and valuation of outcomes, (iv) monitoring mechanisms (evaluation), and (v) guidance and appraisal. Document co-citation analysis revealed eighteen major research streams and identified variation in the magnitude of activities in each of the streams. A recent emergence of research activities in health economics was seen in the Medicaid Expansion stream. Established research streams that continue to show high levels of activity include Child Health, Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and Cost-effectiveness. Conversely, Patient Preference, Health Care Expenditure and Economic Evaluation are now past their peak of activity in specialised health economic journals. Analysis also identified several streams that emerged in the past but are no longer active. Conclusions: Health economics is a growing field, yet there is minimal evidence of creation of new research trends. Over the past 10 years, the average rate of annual increase in internationally collaborated publications is almost double that of domestic collaborations (8.4% vs 4.9%), but most of the top scholarly collaborations remain between six countries only. The article focuses on reevaluating Alexander Hamilton's role as an economist, arguing that he deserves greater recognition in this regard. It emphasizes Hamilton's transition towards economic liberalism and his efforts in shaping a stable economic environment during a period of significant transitions in the United States.

In this article, we celebrate the first 50 years of the European Review of Agricultural Economics. We intend to convey some understanding of how the interests of European Review of Agricultural Economics (ERAE) readers change over time as a reflection of how shifting interests show up in our research. To document how the issues, methods, and content of the ERAE evolve over time, we summarise the content of the top-cited articles by decade. This paper chronicles my fisheries compliance and enforcement research during the past 40 years. My colleagues and I at the University of Rhode Island began researching fisheries law enforcement issues around 1980 because of the high degree of noncompliance in fisheries managed by the New England Fisheries Management Council. We collected data and demonstrated that the pure deterrence model does not explain fisheries compliance behavior well. This set us on a course to develop an enriched model of compliance behavion The formal enriched model accounts for tangible and intangible motivations influencing individuals' compliance decisions, resulting in better explanations of the evidence than the pure deterrence model. The model also provides practical and superior policy prescriptions. Although the enriched model is superior to the basic pure deterrence model, much research remains to be done on explaining compliance behavior and crafting more efficient and effective compliance and regulatory programs in fisheries. This essay investigates how, why and with what results the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) influenced the development of UK economics between 1930 and 1950. It shows the extent to which the RF, as the major sponsor of the newly emerging 'applied economics' research in the US and Europe, shaped the conversion of newly emerging macroeconomic theory into policy and research, and steered the fast expanding 'applied' economics in an econometric direction based on newly available national accounts data. The RF played a decisive role in selecting the economists retained for applied research when World War 2 ended, and with it the type of work funded. We argue that the RF's preference for financing stand-alone institutes restrained the initial expansion of England's applied economics research despite a head-start on national income accounting and business-focused research. Drawing on unpublished correspondence between John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946) and senior RF officers, we show how the difficulty in obtaining start-up funding conditioned the turn towards econometrics in the early choice of leadership and research plans at the University of Cambridge's Department of Applied Economics, narrowing its earlier vision for a 'realistic approach' consonant with that of Keynes. Covering the path-dependent nature of applied economics in its formative phase, the essay demonstrates the role of philanthropic elite organisations in knowledge formation that led to the making of microeconomics and macroeconomics. Economists have recently adopted pre‐analysis plans in response to concerns about robustness and transparency in research. The increased use of registered pre‐analysis plans has raised competing concerns that detailed plans are costly to create, overly restrictive, and limit the type of inspiration that stems from exploratory analysis. We consider these competing views of pre‐analysis plans, and make a careful distinction between the roles of pre‐analysis plans and registries, which provide a record of all planned research. We propose a flexible "packraft" pre‐analysis plan approach that offers benefits for a wide variety of experimental and nonexperimental applications in applied economics. Credible economic research demands discipline and defensible modeling assumptions—both theoretical and empirical—but incentives to strategically shape findings (e.g., p‐hack) can be strong. We examine recent waves of empiricism in economics and the ethical concerns and responses they prompted. Statistical abuses that opportunistically search for significance are often inseparable from conceptual abuses of opportunistic model identification (i.e., p‐hacking writ large). We compare neoclassical with positivist hacking proclivities and explore associated implications for empirical analysis and peer review. Drawing on our experiences, 25 years apart, as AJAE editors we reflect on efforts to evaluate research quality and enhance research transparency. The aim of this article is to present the panorama of the teaching of Accounting Sciences in the third sector (TS) in the Accounting course in view of its prominence and growth, it is expected that higher education can prepare the professional to act with the recent changes gives TS legislation, preparing useful and transparent information for its users. To achieve the objective, the offer of disciplines in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Brazil was verified. The empirical study of an applied nature, has as exploratory methodology analyzing the curriculum available in the pages of 77 public HEIs, being analyzed 62 subjects offered on the TS. The results indicated that the TS course is not offered in all HEIs in Brazil, those that have it available as an elective course (optional). The research highlighted that among the HEIs studied, UNIFESP offers the TS discipline with the highest number of hours. Among the analysis by regions, the results showed that the Northeast region and represented by the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais, are the ones that offer the most TS disciplines. According to the Institute of Applied Economics Research (IPEA, 2020) this region and these states are not the most quantitative of TS institutions. Finally, data analyzed revealed that HEIs in Brazil are not complying with Resolution 4 of 2005 in its entirety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In "Inflation and FDI in industrialized and developing economies", Komla Agudze and Oyakhilome Ibhagui investigate the effects of inflation on foreign direct investment (FDI) in 74 countries, finding the links to be non-linear, although generally the correlation being between low inflation and FDI. This study examined the determinants of economic development for the 34 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and analysed efficient uses of economic development resource endowments. The methodology included econometric panel data modelling and stochastic frontier analysis, using the Cobb-Douglas production function and trans-logarithmic functional form to analyse data from 2003 to 2012. Economic growth was measured by the gross domestic product (GDP) of each economy. As a result, the determinants of economic development were presented and a ranking of efficiency was obtained for all OECD economies throughout the period of analysis. It was concluded that countries with higher economic growth levels have higher efficiency rankings. For example, countries with higher efficiency rankings were Luxembourg and the U.S.; Chile and Mexico were ranked lower. Finally, there was a positive relationship between growth levels and technical efficiency levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review presents machine learning (ML) approaches from an applied economist's perspective. We first introduce the key ML methods drawing connections to econometric practice. We then identify current limitations of the econometric and simulation model toolbox in applied economics and explore potential solutions afforded by ML. We dive into cases such as inflexible functional forms, unstructured data sources and large numbers of explanatory variables in both prediction and causal analysis, and highlight the challenges of complex simulation models. Finally, we argue that economists have a vital role in addressing the shortcomings of ML when used for quantitative economic analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A key aspect of applied economics over the last decade has been the status accorded to research designs that may credibly identify causal effects. Without such designs, one may not estimate the right thing and publishing options may be limited. Yet situations where reported results are not for parameters that researchers think they have identified are potentially more widespread than what is usually considered in discussion of research designs or identification strategies. I give five examples of applied practice where what is estimated may not identify what is wanted. Each practice came up in submissions I handled as co-editor of an agricultural economics journal, and these issues seem common in applied work. A narrow focus on identification strategies may lead to the neglect of these examples, and of other productive ways to improve the credibility and usefulness of applied economics research. Agricultural economists have embodied the notions of applied economics for a long time. They have used economic principles to address real-world problems, integrating economics and scientific knowledge. Applied economics tends to be multidisciplinary and develop applied concepts, theories, and tools. Some, like human capital, diffusion of innovation, contingent valuation, and numerous numerical and econometric techniques have spread throughout economics. Agricultural economic research has been data intensive, and improved information technologies strengthen this tendency. Yet data without theory is of limited use and coevolution of theory and data are essential. Empirical analysis should incorporate quantitative information as well as narratives. We are challenged to understand the coevolution of business, supply chains, and technology, and how they are affected by policies and affect markets. Research should integrate agriculture, energy, and the environment and develop tools to analyze and regulate the emerging bio-economy integrating biotech and infotech. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An introduction is presented in which the authors discuss the findings of the Priorities and Solutions Project focusing on the challenges facing the research, agricultural education and data and the application of economic analysis to major issues facing the society.

Textbooks are an important subject for the study of science in general and economics in particular. In this paper, we analyse at the process of the acceptance of human capital theory through its inclusion in economics textbooks by looking at two specialized fields to which this theory became highly influential: labour economics and the economics of education. The analysis will compare the patterns of the dissemination of these new theoretical developments in a more consolidated field and in an emergent field of economics research with a particular focus in the early stages of that dissemination process. Traditionally, evidence in economics has been seen in the context of theory choice. Much of recent methodological debate on the role of evidence has turned on the recognition that the status and role of evidence is somewhat more involved in economics than the conventional wisdom suggests. Rather than approaching this question in general terms from a starting point of philosophy of science or even science studies, our aim in this introduction to a symposium of articles on evidence in economics is to approach the question from the perspective of applied economics.
