Each spring when Francis Meeks opens her Richmond Hill home to hundreds of Bryan County, Georgia third-graders, she opens a book on ancient and living histories. In May, 2002, 300 school-children gathered on the steps of the veranda of her home to hear those history lessons from a woman who has watched Richmond Hill, Georgia march from rural poverty to a position as a state leader in population and economic growth. For decades, the region's economy had been dominated by auto manufacturing colossus Henry Ford, who employed 1,000 people on his Richmond Hill plantation, and by International Paper, a giant timber processor. INSET: Bryan County At-A-Glance.
