Despite the importance for scientific and conservation purposes, the knowledge of the Italian territory is far from exhaustive. New chorological data for 87 vascular taxa regarding the central-southern part of Italy and its two main islands (Sicilia and Sardegna) are presented. Among these taxa, Epilobium nummularifolium, Metrosideros excelsa, and Salvinia minima are recorded as casual aliens for the first time in Europe (excluding Azores and Madeira for M. excelsa), while Cyclamen balearicum and Polygala rupestris are reported for the first time and confirmed for Italian native flora, respectively. Furthermore, several taxa are new or confirmed at regional level. Finally, Lathyrus cirrhosus, Urginea fugax, and Linum tenuifolium are excluded from Italy, continental and peninsular Italy, and Sardegna, respectively.

In order to improve the floristic knowledge of the Italian territory, we report the inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society held in 2015 in eastern Irpinia and Vulture-Melfese area (South Italy). The investigated territories are located in southern Apennines, along the border between the Campania and Basilicata administrative regions. These areas are scarcely known in terms of vascular flora. The floristic samplings were performed in 19 sites selected as representative of the local environmental diversity as regards to climate, litho-morphology and land-use. The research led to the identification of 4,137 specimens of vascular plants, belonging to 815 species and subspecies, 399 genera, and 85 families. Among these taxa, 42 were endemic to Italy, 38 were included in the IUCN Red List of the Italian Flora, 28 were alien and 5 were cryptogenic in Campania and/or Basilicata administrative regions. Two taxa, Aquilegia coerulea (casual alien, native to North America) and Lolium × boucheanum (native), were found to be new for Italy. On the basis of the available floristic literature the first one is also to be considered new for the European flora. At regional scale, we have found 18 taxa new for the Campania and 15 new for the Basilicata region. Finally, 10 taxa were confirmed for Campania. Data obtained during this study, confirmed the important role of a collaborative approach among botanists and the great relevance of these territories for plant diversity.

In this paper, we focused our attention on the taxonomy and distribution in Italy of taxa belonging to Trifolium sect. Vesicastrum subsect. Mystillus. A short description of these closely related clovers, based on the study of fresh plant material, revision of herbarium specimens, and analysis of the relevant literature, is provided. Diagnostic features were highlighted by means of high-resolution digital images and, accordingly, an identification key is given. Trifolium spumosum, T. vesiculosum, T. mutabile and T. setiferum are reported to be distributed throughout Italy. We have updated the Italian distribution of the first three species by providing new occurrences from Tuscany, Umbria, Campania, Basilicata, and Calabria and by correcting previous references. The current presence of T. multistriatum in southern Italy is confirmed by our study, while T. setiferum must be excluded from the flora of Sicily. The study resulted in five new regional occurrences and 16 changes of presence status. Finally, intermediate forms between T. vesiculosum, T. multistriatum and T. mutabile were found both in living material and in the revised herbarium specimens.

Summary Italian species of the Viola tricolor group, Sect. Melanium are examined from the morphological view-point. Additional diagnostic characters have been highlighted on the basis of in situ and ex situ experimental data, direct analysis of exsiccata and high resolution digital images of several Herbaria, check of previous international literature. Measures have been taken on well developed flowers after a given vegetative period. Diagnostic features of stigma, labellum, position of opening to the stigmatic chamber and detailed photos are provided. Scanned images of stipules and corresponding leaves taken from the lower, median and upper part of the stem are also provided. These images provide clearer discrimination and correct identification of this difficult group. Riassunto Il presente studio analizza la flora del Monte Scalambra, estrema propaggine nord-occidentale dei Monti Ernici. Il territorio, la cui altitudine e compresa tra 400 m e 1420 m s.l.m, ha una estensione di circa 4200 ha ed e prevalentemente costituito da sedimenti carbonatici. Il clima e di tipo temperato. La flora risente della particolare collocazione del Monte Scalambra tra due importanti unita geografiche: l'Antiappennino laziale e l'Appennino laziale-abruzzese; si compone infatti di elementi di diversa provenienza, con una prevalenza delle componenti eurasiatica (35,4 %) e mediterranea s.l. (31,4%), tra loro ben bilanciate. Sono state censite 1164 entita, appartenenti a 483 generi e 102 famiglie, tra le quali le piu ricche di specie risultano Compositae (138), Gramineae (117) e Leguminosae (109). Riassunto E stato condotto a termine lo studio della Flora del Parco Nazionale del Circeo (inclusa l'isola di Zannone), svoltosi specialmente negli anni 1989–1995 con osservazioni e raccolte eseguite dagli autori, ma con l'utilizzazione anche di materiali raccolti dagli autori stessi o da loro collaboratori negli anni precedenti, nonche mediante la revisione dei molti exsiccata contenuti negli erbari del Dipartimento di Biologia Vegetale dell'Universita di Roma (RO) e in alcuni erbari privati, e, ovviamente, con la consultazione di tutta la esistente bibliografia. The aim of this paper is to document plant diversity in the metropolitan area of Rome (Italy) by providing a comprehensive inventory of the present-day vascular flora and an overview of its composition and species diversity. We compiled the floristic catalogue by including all vascular plant entities that occur spontaneously within the administrative boundaries of the Rome municipality. The data, which were gathered from extensive field surveys, from a broad review of the literature and from herbaria records, were updated and integrated in a comprehensive account. The inventory of the flora of metropolitan Rome lists 1649 entities, from 139 families and 677 genera. The flora contains 228 taxa that are non-native to the Italian flora, 81 of which are established in the study area. The overview of flora reveals a remarkable species diversity and outlines the main characteristics of the flora of Rome, which may be summarized as (1) a large number of taxa of high conservation value which occur in remnants of near-natural vegetation, (2) the loss or decline of some species, particularly of native freshwater plants, (3) a remarkably high native species richness within the urban area, which includes many native woody species and (4) a rich ruderal flora, prevalently composed of native species that are well adapted to human disturbance, along with a variety of taxa of non-native or uncertain origin. The large set of data and the overview presented in this paper represent a fundamental framework for future research and for the conservation of plant diversity in metropolitan Rome.

The most commonly used old‐growth forest indicators are structural attributes; nevertheless, they do not necessarily represent the biodiversity value of old‐growth forests. The aim of this study is to analyse the relationships between species richness data of different taxa and structural indicators of old‐growth and to identify taxonomic/functional groups, species and structural attributes that may be used as indicators of old‐growth. To achieve this goal we sampled forest structure, vascular plants, lichens, bryophytes, fungi, saproxylic beetles and birds in mature and old‐growth stands in southern Italy. Therefore, the optimal data set for a phytogeographical (fioristic) Classification of Italy would be a floristic atlas including all the vascular plants species of the country: grid cells should be treated as OGUS (Operational Geographic Unit) and elaborated through multivariate presence/ absence analysis. However, such an atlas has never been realized in our country. Aim of the paper is to present a quantitative phytogeographical classification of Italy based on available data, i.e. the new chet:l(—list of the Italian vascular Hora, the large amount ofpublished local Horas and information about the distribution of Potential Natural Vegetation (vegetation series). As the check-list shows the plant list of each of the 20 administrative regions of Italy, these can be treated as OGUS For a first, coarse—grain framework classification of the country. A more detailed and fine—grainecl analysis of Italy’s phytogeographical units can be made analyzing a wide set oflocal floras, chosen — among the many available — on the basis of their study area surface and ecological heterogeneity. We also present a detailed analysis regarding the chorological attributes of species exclusive of the Thyrrenic regions compared to the Adriatic ones. The complex of the analysis confirm the presence of a gradient north—south and a clear separation est—west along the Peninsula. Si tratta esattamente di Micromeria fruticosa (L.) Druce ssp. fruticosa, presente in Europa, a quanto finora risulta, solo nella predetta localita italiana e in un settore della Spagna.
