Although the role played by phylogeny in the assembly of plant communities remains as a priority to complete the theory of species coexistence, experimental evidence is lacking. It is still unclear to what extent phylogenetic diversity is a driver or a consequence of species assembly processes. We experimentally explored how phylogenetic diversity can drive the community level responses to drought conditions in annual plant communities. We manipulated the initial phylogenetic diversity of the assemblages and the water availability in a common garden experiment with two irrigation treatments: average natural rainfall and drought, formed with annual plant species of gypsum ecosystems of Central Spain. We recorded plant survival and the numbers of flowering and fruiting plants per species in each assemblage. GLMMs were performed for the proportion of surviving, flowering, fruiting plants per species and for total proportion of surviving species and plants per pot. In water limited conditions, high phylogenetic diversity favored species coexistence over time with higher plant survival and more flowering and fruiting plants per species and more species and plants surviving per pot. Our results agree with the existence of niche complementarity and the convergence of water economy strategies as major mechanisms for promoting species coexistence in plant assemblages in semiarid Mediterranean habitats. Our findings point to high phylogenetic diversity among neighboring plants as a plausible feature underpinning the coexistence of species, because the success of each species in terms of surviving and producing offspring in drought conditions was greater when the initial phylogenetic diversity was higher. Our study is a step forward to understand how phylogenetic relatedness is connected to the mechanisms determining the maintenance of biodiversity.

Seasonally dry forests (SDFs) are one of the most challenging ecosystems for amphibians, fueling the diversity of this group of vertebrates. An updated inventory of native amphibians present in the Equatorial SDF is provided, which extends along the Pacific coast of Ecuador and northwestern Peru. The study is based on an extensive field sampling (two thirds of the total records) carried out throughout the Equatorial SDF, along with a compilation of the available information on distribution of amphibians in the region from published scientific papers, museum collections and on-line databases. The final dataset included 2,032 occurrence records for 30 amphibian species, belonging to eight anuran families. Additionally, data regarding conservation status, habitat use, spawn deposition site, reproductive mode, and body size, along with an identification key for all encountered species are provided. The results indicate a strong sampling bias with a deficit in the Peruvian part of the study area, and a need for urgent inventories targeted at under-sampled areas, using modern taxonomic methods. The study emphasizes the conservation priorities in the Equatorial SDF, based on the distribution, conservation status and life-history data. This information should be useful for the local authorities and institutions involved in the management and conservation of biodiversity in SDF.

Base de datos que contiene información relativa al sistema integrado local propuesto para evaluar el estado de conservación (EC) del parámetro ‘Estructura y función’ (E&F) por región biogeográfica de las parcelas pertenecientes a cada tipo de hábitat de interés comunitario (HIC) basándose en las 15 variables propuestas del IFN3.

Selección y descripción de variables: Para evaluar el Estado de Conservación (EC) del parámetro ‘Estructura y función’ (E&F) de los 22 Tipos de Hábitat de Interés Comunitario (HICs) se hizo una propuesta de 15 variables de seguimiento extraíbles del Tercer Inventario forestal Nacional (IFN3) y con un alto poder diagnóstico. En este documento, se describe en detalle cada variable, así como la metodología que permite obtener cada una de ellas a partir del IFN3, contemplando las variables del IFN3 a emplear, su localización dentro de la base de datos del IFN3 (tabla de referencia y base de datos) y los pertinentes detalles para el cálculo final del indicador. Tipificación de las parcelas del IFN3: Para seleccionar las parcelas del IFN3 perteneciente a cada uno de los 22 HICs forestales evaluados se consideró el número de especies focales y la abundancia relativa de las mismas, que en este trabajo vino definida según el porcentaje de área basimétrica (%AB) de cada especie forestal medida en cada parcela.

PREMISE: Gypsum soils in the Mediterranean Basin house large numbers of edaphic specialists that are adapted to stressful environments. The evolutionary history and standing genetic variation of these taxa have been influenced by the geological and paleoclimatic complexity of this area and the long-standing effect of human activities. However, little is known about the origin of Mediterranean gypsophiles and the factors affecting their genetic diversity and population structure. METHODS: Using phylogenetic and phylogeographic approaches based on microsatellites and sequence data from nuclear and chloroplast regions, we evaluated the divergence time, genetic diversity, and population structure of 27 different populations of the widespread Iberian gypsophile Lepidium subulatum throughout its entire geographic range. RESULTS: Lepidium subulatum diverged from its nearest relatives ~3 million years ago, and ITS and psbA/matK trees supported the monophyly of the species. These results suggest that both geological and climatic changes in the region around the Plio-Pleistocene promoted its origin, compared to other evolutionary processes. We found high genetic diversity in both nuclear and chloroplast markers, but a greater population structure in the chloroplast data. These results suggest that while seed dispersal is limited, pollen flow may be favored by the presence of numerous habitat patches that enhance the movement of pollinators. CONCLUSIONS: Despite being an edaphic endemic, L. subulatum possesses high genetic diversity probably related to its relatively old age and high population sizes across its range. Our study highlights the value of using different markers to fully understand the phylogeographic history of plant species.

An unresolved question in plant ecology is whether diversity of the aboveground and belowground compartments of a plant community is similar at different neighbourhood scales. We investigated how the similarity between both compartments varies with the aboveground sampling grain and if significant discrepancies exist between aboveground and belowground plant diversity at the maximum similarity scale. We fully mapped the aboveground perennial plant community of a 64 m2 plot in a Mediterranean shrubland and analysed this compartment by assessing diversity in 5 to 50 cm radii circles centred in soil cores. We sampled 2.5 cm radius root cores at two different depths and identified plant species by using DNA metabarcoding to characterise the belowground compartment. We quantified differences in species richness, composition and species’ spatial distribution above- and belowground. The differences between aboveground and belowground communities were affected by the size of the aboveground sampling grain and were minimised when considering a circle of 20 cm radius in the aboveground. We found a significant dissimilarity in richness and composition between the two compartments, with larger differences when considering the deeper soil layer only. Our results showed that the spatial grain selected to sample a plant community aboveground and belowground is critical to characterise them in a comparable manner. Although their composition is related, species distribution patterns strongly differ, suggesting the simultaneous action of different assembly mechanisms. Our results call for caution when studying community assembly considering only the standing vegetation, since total plant diversity can be underappreciated.

Recent theoretical and empirical studies have assumed that livestock grazing acts as a biotic filter favouring plant species with functional traits that confer resistance to herbivory. Considering that plant functional traits affect the species abundance and persistence in a community, alterations in functional diversity would result in changes in species richness, evenness or growth form composition. However, empirical tests of the intermediary role of functional diversity among livestock pressure, climate and species diversity and composition remain rare. We evaluated if functional diversity acts as an intermediary between livestock pressure and several components of taxonomical diversity in plant communities located along an aridity gradient in central-western Argentina. We estimated functional diversity using four plant traits that are expected to reflect trade-offs between resource-use strategies and grazing resistance. We found that livestock pressure increased shrub abundance by negatively affecting functional diversity, and this effect was amplified by increases in aridity. On the other hand, aridity promoted declines in species richness by reductions in functional diversity. Overall, our results suggest that functional diversity acts as intermediary component between livestock pressure and growth form composition; and also between aridity and species richness. Finally, our findings highlight that livestock grazing may be considered as a biotic filter affecting growth form composition but not species richness and evenness.

Roots are assumed to play a major role in structuring soil microbial communities, but most studies exploring the relationships between microbes and plants at the community level have only used aboveground plant distribution as a proxy. However, a decoupling between belowground and aboveground plant components may occur due to differential spreading of plant canopies and root systems. Thus, soil microbe–plant links are not completely understood. Using a combination of DNA metabarcoding and spatially explicit sampling at the plant neighbourhood scale, we assessed the influence of the plant root community on soil bacterial and fungal diversity (species richness, composition and b-diversity) in a dry Mediterranean scrubland. We found that root composition and biomass, but not richness, predict unique fractions of variation in microbial richness and composition. Moreover, bacterial b-diversity was related to root b-diversity, while fungal b-diversity was related to aboveground plant b-diversity, suggesting that plants differently influence both microbial groups. Our study highlights the role of plant distribution both belowground and aboveground, soil properties and other spatially structured factors in explaining the heterogeneity in soil microbial diversity. These results also show that incorporating data on both plant community compartments will further our understanding of the relationships between soil microbial and plant communities.

AIMS: Plant recruitment may occur immediately after seed dispersal from the mother plant, or be delayed through the formation of soil seed banks. These strategies are known to be mediated by adaptations of seed dispersal and reproductive phenology, which if analyzed together can provide valuable information about the regeneration strategies of species. We explored whether dispersal syndrome and/or seed dispersal phenology control the similarity between standing vegetation, seed rain and soil seed bank in a seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) in Southern Ecuador. LOCATION: Arenillas Ecological Reserve, Southwestern Ecuador, the biogeographic region of Pacific Coastal Ecuador. METHODS: We recorded standing vegetation of woody species in a 9‐ha permanent plot and sampled soil seed bank from 265 cores of 0.06 m². Additionally, we sampled seed rain from 265 seed traps of 0.64 m² for one year. We evaluated similarity in species composition, species richness, and abundance between the three components for all species and for each dispersal syndrome. RESULTS: The community we studied showed a high similarity in species composition between components. The similarity was influenced by dispersal syndrome and the seed dispersal phenology. Similarity between seed rain and standing vegetation was high in species that dispersed in the rainy season, such as zoochorous species, while for autochorous species, compared with the other dispersal syndromes it was higher between seed bank and standing vegetation. CONCLUSIONS: In our SDTF, dispersal phenology seemed to influence whether seeds had direct germination or entered the soil seed bank and influenced the match between seed rain and soil seed bank, suggesting different regeneration strategies related to dispersal ability.

AimsHarsh environmental conditions in alpine ecosystems shape vegetation structure into patches, where many different plant species cluster and grow together. Yet, which factors are important for the structure and dynamics of such plant–patch networks remains poorly understood. We aim to assess which and how environmental and biotic factors predict the assembly of plant–patch networks along a mountain range.MethodsWe examined the distribution of plant species in more than 5500 vegetation patches in 37 Mediterranean alpine grasslands distributed along a 500 m altitudinal gradient (National Park of Sierra Guadarrama, Spain). We established a plant–patch network for each grassland community and analyzed how nestedness and modularity vary with environmental (altitude, insolation and soil conditions) and biotic factors (number of species per plot, mean patch area and total pasture area).Important FindingsPlant–patch networks showed consistent, non-random patterns characterized by a nested, but not modular, structure, which suggests that positive associations among co-occurring specialists promote their growth within patches as subsets of a pool with more generalist species. Both nestedness and modularity of plant–patch networks varied among grasslands. Specifically, nestedness decreased with increasing species per plot and increased with mean patch area, while it was independent of environmental variables; modularity increased with increasing pasture area and species per plot. The negative relationship between species per plot and nested patterns may be linked to the restricted number of species that can coexist within the same patch at a given size. Moreover, the positive relationship between patch size and nestedness indicates that the growth of rare plant species within vegetation patches occupied by more abundant species is facilitated in bigger rather than smaller patches. Furthermore, these results indicate that the nested assembly of vegetation patches may be independent of abiotic conditions. These findings suggest that large and unfragmented vegetation patches are fundamental for the maintenance of plant diversity in alpine grasslands. Looking at species distribution at fine spatial scales may shed new light on the biotic processes underlying plant network assembly and provide novel ways for conserving biodiversity.

Background and Aims Plants experiencing contrasting environmental conditions may accommodate such heterogeneity by expressing phenotypic plasticity, evolving local adaptation or a combination of both. We investigated patterns of genetic differentiation and plasticity in response to drought in populations of the gypsum specialist Lepidium subulatum. Methods We created an outdoor common garden with rain exclusion structures using 60 maternal progenies from four distinct populations that substantially differ in climatic conditions. We characterized fitness, life history and functional plasticity in response to two contrasting treatments that realistically reflect soil moisture variation in gypsum habitats. We also assessed neutral genetic variation and population structure using microsatellite markers. Key Results In response to water stress, plants from all populations flowered earlier, increased allocation to root tissues and advanced leaf senescence, consistent with a drought escape strategy. Remarkably, these probably adaptive responses were common to all populations, as shown by the lack of population × environment interaction for almost all functional traits. This generally common pattern of response was consistent with substantial neutral genetic variation and large differences in population trait means. However, such population-level trait variation was not related to climatic conditions at the sites of origin. Conclusions Our results show that, rather than ecotypes specialized to local climatic conditions, these populations are composed of highly plastic, general-purpose genotypes in relation to climatic heterogeneity. The strikingly similar patterns of plasticity among populations, despite substantial site of origin differences in climate, suggest past selection on a common norm of reaction due to similarly high levels of variation within sites. It is thus likely that plasticity will have a prevalent role in the response of this soil specialist to further environmental change.

Plant trait- based ecology is a powerful extension of the attempt of community ecolo -gists to unveil assembly mechanisms. However, the two main expected determinants of community assembly, niche and neutral processes, can be confused under this framework. Here, we propose to move from trait- based to phenotype- based commu-nity ecology, accounting for the variation between individuals (phenotypes affected by the abiotic and biotic environment, and vice versa), and explicitly considering their ability to compete with or facilitate its neighbours. This would shift our focus from species’ niche responses to niche specialization of phenotypes, reducing the space for neutrality at the finest scales. The current assembly framework, based mainly on niche complementarity and using species-average functional traits, has been devel -oped exploring mega- diverse communities, but it fails at describing poor plant com -munities. Under this framework, monospecificity would be interpreted as an arena where functionally similar individuals compete, consequently leading to regular pat -terns, which are rarely found in nature. Our niche specialization framework could help explaining coexistence in rich plant communities, where the higher fraction of functional variation is found between species, whereas the intraspecific trait varia -tion dominates in poor species and monospecific communities. We propose a guide to conduct massive phenotyping at the community scale based on the use of visible and near- infrared spectroscopy. Chronic disturbance is widely recognized as one of main triggers of diversity loss in seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs). However, the pathways through which diffuse disturbance is acting on the forest are little understood. This information is especially demanded in the case of vanishing Neotropical seasonally dry forests such as the Tumbesian ones. We proposed a conceptual model to analyze the factors behind the loss of woody species richness along a forest disturbance gradient, explicitly considering the existence of direct and indirect causal pathways of biodiversity loss. We hypothesized that the chronic disturbance can act on the woody species richness directly, either by selective extraction of resources or by browsing of palatable species for livestock, or indirectly, by modifying characteristics of the forest structure and productivity. To test our model, we sampled forest remnants in a very extensive area submitted to long standing chronic pressure. Our forests cells (200 × 200 m) were characterized both in terms of woody species composition, structure, and human pressure. Our structural equation models (SEMs) showed that chronic disturbance is driving a loss of species richness. This was done mainly by indirect effects through the reduction of large trees density. We assume that changes in tree density modify the environmental conditions, thus increasing the stress and finally filtering some specific species. The analysis of both, direct and indirect, allows us to gain a better understanding of the processes behind plant species loss in this SDTF.

Biocrusts are major contributors to dryland diversity, functioning, and services. However, little is known about how habitat degradation will impact multiple facets of biocrust diversity and measurable functional traits. We evaluated changes in taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity of biocrust-forming lichens along a habitat degradation gradient related to the presence of linear infrastructure (i.e., a road) and a profound agricultural driven transformation. To do so, we selected 50 remnants of a Mediterranean shrubland. We considered several surrogates of habitat quality and causal disturbance on the various diversity facets of biocrusts by using structural equation modeling, hypothesizing that habitat degradation primarily affects functional diversity, which in turn regulates changes in taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities, and also that taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities are coupled. Fragment connectivity, distance to linear infrastructure (i.e., a road) and, particularly, soil fertility (i.e., soil P concentration), had mostly negative effects on biocrust functional diversity, which in turn affected both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities. However, we found no direct effects of habitat degradation variables on the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities. We also found that increases in phylogenetic diversity had a positive effect on taxonomic diversity along the habitat degradation gradient. Our results indicate that functional diversity of biocrusts is strongly affected by habitat degradation, which may profoundly alter their contribution to ecosystem functioning and services. Furthermore, functional diversity regulates the response of biocrust taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity to habitat degradation. These findings indicate that habitat degradation alters and simplifies the diversity of functional traits of biocrust-forming lichens, leading to biodiversity loss, with important consequences for the conservation of global drylands biodiversity.

Understanding the mechanisms that underlie species assembly is a central concern in community ecology. Abiotic and biotic filters are probabilistic ‘sieves’ that allow species with certain functional traits to become a part of the community, or not. We manipulated natural plant assemblies in order to identify variations in the timings of biotic and abiotic filters that determine community trait assemblies. We extracted soil portions when the investigated annual plant community was in its seed phase (‘community monolith’), thereby maintaining the structure and similar soil characteristics to the field conditions. Community monoliths were subjected to experimental manipulation in terms of the rainfall timing and amount, and perturbations of the biological soil crust (BSC; intact vs. perturbed). We surveyed the experimental community assembly over time based on the functional diversity by considering important functional traits in different life stages. We found that autumn droughts acted as abiotic filters by favouring the germination and establishment of species with greater investment in the root biomass. Under severe droughts (66% water reduction), the experimental assemblies were dominated by species with functional traits adapted to water shortage conditions: high leaf dry matter content, low specific leaf area, small individual size, low reproductive ratio and high root:shoot ratio. We identified two roles of BSCs in annual plant species assemblies: (a) as a biotic filter that limited the establishment of species based on seed size, and (b) as a buffer against water stress conditions by reducing soil evapotranspiration. Synthesis. We demonstrated the importance of the timing and amount of rainfall for shaping annual plant communities, and identified germination filters as the main process that determined community assemblies. Our results suggest that the phenotypic integration of functional traits facilitates resistance to drought during the life cycle. The BSC–annual plant relationship shifted from negative, by acting as a germination filter, to positive, by acting as a buffer in later stages. Climatic fluctuations and fine scale biotic determinants of spatial heterogeneity emerged as sources of changes in the community assembly in time and space to possibly promote species coexistence and trait differences among the communities studied., We give special thanks to Carlos P. Assessing the response of biological communities to contrasting environmental conditions is crucial to predict the effects of global change drivers. The influence of multiple environmental factors may differ depending on the diversity facet considered, which emphasizes the need to simultaneously evaluate the functional (FD), phylogenetic (PD) and taxonomic (TD) diversity. To examine how these facets of biodiversity respond to environmental changes, we studied lichen epiphytic communities across 47 beech forest fragments from two biogeographic regions. We applied structural equation modelling to relate habitat fragmentation, climate and habitat quality with FD, PD and TD. We compared the community response to contrasting climatic conditions by analysing independently Atlantic and Mediterranean communities. We found different major drivers of biodiversity patterns across biogeographic regions. Habitat fragmentation performed the highest effect on lichen communities, with a reduction of FD, PD and TD at both regions. However, the influence of climate was stronger in the Atlantic region than in the Mediterranean region, where the effect of habitat quality was superior. The effect of the environmental predictors over PD and TD was both direct and indirect through the different components of FD, and their intensity and sign differed across regions. Changes in PD were not related to changes in TD. Synthesis. Our results evidenced that the major environmental drivers affecting epiphytic communities were geographically structured. These drivers modified the diversity of the epiphytic community directly but also indirectly through changes in FD, which emerged as a causal but not unique determinant of PD and TD. Our findings also showed the difficulty for inferring TD through PD. These results emphasize the essential role of FD predicting part of the response of lichen communities to global change drivers but also highlight the importance of considering multiple biodiversity facets to understand the effects of environmental change on community structure.

Doi.: 10.7818/ECOS.1525 Gypsum habitats host unique plant communities due to their high richness and abundance of endemic species. Although our knowledge regarding several aspects of their ecology has increased over the last decades, the effects of climate change on gypsophiles, and importantly, their response mechanisms, have been poorly explored. Under the increased aridity foreseen for many regions due to climate change, plants may migrate to more favorable sites, adapt to new environmental conditions or adjust via phenotypic plasticity. In this study, we review the documented effects of climate change on gypsophile populations and evaluate the existing evidence on their potential responses. Despite the stress-tolerant nature of these species, several studies have shown negative effects on their physiology, phenology and demography. Several aspects related to life on gypsum, including natural and anthropogenic fragmentation, gypsophily and lack of active dispersal mechanisms may greatly limit their migration ability. Although there is very little information in population differentiation, evolutionary potential for key functional traits and phenotypic plasticity, our revision suggests that these mechanisms will have a more prominent role than migration in a climate change context. Therefore, we propose future research lines to allow a deeper knowledge on microevolutionary process involved in the response of gypsophiles to climate change.

Albeit the remarkably high Ultraviolet B loads, high temperatures, and drought stress substantiate the need for efficient photoprotective strategies in Mediterranean high-mountain plants, these remain understudied. Considering the sensitivity of photosystems to extreme conditions, we evaluated an environmental gradient’s weight on the photoprotection of five high-mountain specialists from Central Spain. Diurnal and seasonal variations in chlorophyll, chlorophyll fluorescence, carotenoids, and xanthophylls in consecutive and climatically contrasting years were taken to evaluate the effect of the impending climate coarsening at the photosystem level. Our results revealed significant differences among species in the xanthophyll cycle functioning, acting either as a continuous photoprotective strategy enhancing photochemistry-steadiness, or prompted only to counteract the cumulative effects of atypically adverse conditions. The lutein cycle’s involvement is inferred from the high lutein content found in all species and elevations, acting as a sustained photoprotective strategy. These findings added to high de-epoxidation state (DEPS) and minor seasonal changes in the chlorophyll a/b ratio, infer the xanthophyll and Lutein cycles are crucial for upkeeping the photosystems’ optimal functioning in these plants heightening their photoprotective capacity during periods of more unfavorable conditions. Nevertheless, an atypically dry growing season’s detrimental effect infers the feasible surpassing of stress-thresholds and the precariousness of the communities’ functional diversity under climate change.

1. Plant species that grow across environmental gradients show a range of trait ex-pression, but traits do not vary independently. In fact, phenotypes are integrated expressions of multiple traits that covary due to trade-offs among functions and processes. Understanding trait covariation structures will ultimately help with predicting species' responses to change and developing management actions., 2. We measured variation and covariation (a proxy of phenotypic integration) among functional traits of Pinus sylvestris from paired populations across its European distribution. Populations within a pair were close enough to be in gene flow con-tact but located in contrasting environmental conditions across a local gradient. Measured traits represented three axes of variation (groups of traits) related to a tree's competitive ability and the trade-off between resource acquisition and conservation, namely plant size measures and stem and foliar traits., 3. Results revealed important intra- and inter-population trait variability. In particular, at the population level, trait means shifted across the climatic gradient mainly de-scribed by mean annual temperature. Moreover, we found a higher degree of trait covariation in populations under harsher environments (i.e. lower environmental suitability for the species). This pattern was consistent within population pairs, suggesting that higher trait covariation may be adaptive, being more coordinated in sites with harsher conditions. At larger spatial scales, we found a less conclusive pattern with a trend of increasing covariation at the northern edge of the species distribution. This result suggests that at larger scales different processes may be in-volved in the trade-off between the adaptive value of phenotypic covariation ver-sus its constraints on trait combinations that may limit plant's response capability., 4. Synthesis. However, there is still no clear evidence showing a generalised direction and magnitude of these distribution shifts. Here, we have surveyed, in nine mountainous regions in Spain, an array of tree species along entire elevational ranges, as surrogates of their global climatic ranges, to test for elevational shifts towards cooler locations. We analysed the distribution recruitment patterns of five dominant tree species, recording the abundance and measuring the primary growth of juveniles in 306 plots. Three of the species have a temperate-boreal distribution with populations at their southern edge in the Mediterranean mountain ranges: Pinus sylvestris, Pinus uncinata and Fagus sylvatica; and the other two species have a Mediterranean distribution: Quercus ilex and Pinus nigra. Despite the contrasting phylogenies and biogeographies, we identified a similar pattern in recruitment abundance across species, with an asymmetric distribution of juveniles (more recruits in the middle-upper elevation of their range), but higher annual growths at lower elevations. This survival-growth trade-off at the early recruitment stage may potentially counterbalance at population level the negative effect of global warming on recruit survival at the lower edge of species ranges. Understanding how functional and phylogenetic patterns vary among scales and along ecological gradients within a given species pool is critical for inferring community assembly processes. However, we lack a clear understanding of these patterns in stressful habitats such as Mediterranean high mountains where ongoing global warming is expected to affect species fitness and species interactions, and subsequently species turnover. In this study, we investigated 39 grasslands with the same type of plant community and very little species turnover across an elevation gradient above the treeline at Sierra de Guadarrama National Park in central Spain. In particular, we assessed functional and phylogenetic patterns, including functional heterogeneity, using a multi-scale approach (cells, subplots, and plots) and determined the relevance of key ecological factors (i.e., elevation, potential solar radiation, pH, soil organic carbon, species richness, and functional heterogeneity) that affect functional and phylogenetic patterns at each spatial scale. Overall, at the plot scale, coexisting species tended to be more functionally and phylogenetically similar. By contrast, at the subplot and cell scales, species tended to be more functionally different but phylogenetically similar. Functional heterogeneity at the cell scale was comparable to the variation across plots along the gradient. The relevance of ecological factors that regulate diversity patterns varied among spatial scales. An increase in elevation resulted in functional clustering at larger scales and phylogenetic overdispersion at a smaller scale. The soil pH and organic carbon levels exhibited complex functional patterns, especially at small spatial scales, where an increase in pH led to clustering patterns for the traits related to the leaf economic spectrum (i.e., foliar thickness, specific leaf area, and leaf dry matter content). Our findings confirm the presence of primary environmental filters (coldness and summer drought at our study sites) that constrain the regional species pool, suggesting the presence of additional assembly mechanisms that act at the smallest scale (e.g., micro-environmental gradients and/or species interactions). Population persistence is strongly determined by climatic variability. Changes in the patterns of climatic events linked to global warming may alter population dynamics, but their effects may be strongly modulated by biotic interactions. Plant populations interact with each other in such a way that responses to climate of a single population may impact the dynamics of the whole community. In this study, we assess how climate variability affects persistence and coexistence of two dominant plant species in a semiarid shrub community on gypsum soils. We use 9 years of demographic data to parameterize demographic models and to simulate population dynamics under different climatic and ecological scenarios. We observe that populations of both coexisting species may respond to common climatic fluctuations both similarly and in idiosyncratic ways, depending on the yearly combination of climatic factors. Biotic interactions (both within and among species) modulate some of their vital rates, but their effects on population dynamics highly depend on climatic fluctuations. Our results indicate that increased levels of climatic variability may alter interspecific relationships. These alterations might potentially affect species coexistence, disrupting competitive hierarchies and ultimately leading to abrupt changes in community composition.

The effects of habitat fragmentation on plant populations are complex, as it might disrupt many ecological processes, including plant reproduction and plant-animal interactions. Gypsum specialist plants may be resilient to fragmentation due to their evolutionary history in fragmented landscapes, but the effects on non-specialist plants occurring in gypsum are unknown. We conducted a study focusing on different aspects of the reproductive cycle of Astragalus incanus subsp. incanus, a plant facultatively linked to gypsum soils. We focused on plant fecundity and pre-dispersal predation, obtained from field observations, and offspring performance, assessed in a common garden. Beyond fragment size and connectivity, we also considered habitat quality, population size and density and plant size as predictors. Fragment size and connectivity had no effect on plant fecundity, but jointly determined fruit predation, while fragment size was positively related to offspring growth. Population density, rather than population size, had a positive effect on predation but negatively affected plant fecundity and offspring performance. Habitat quality reduced both plant fecundity and predation incidence. In this non-specialist species, habitat fragmentation, population features and habitat quality affect different facets of plant performance. Predation was the only process clearly affected by fragmentation variables, fecundity mainly depended on population features and offspring performance and was better explained by mother plant identity. Our results show the need to consider habitat and population features together with fragment size and connectivity in order to assess the effects of fragmentation. Importantly, these effects can involve different aspects of plant reproduction, including plant-animal interactions.

Previous studies found that plant communities on infertile soils are relatively resistant to climatic variation due to stress tolerance adaptations. However, the species assemblies in gypsum soil habitats require further investigation. Thus, we considered the following questions. (1) Do harsher arid conditions determine the characteristics of the species that form plant assemblages? (2) Is the selection of the species that assemble in arid conditions mediated by their ability to grow on gypsum soils? (3) Is the selection of species that assemble in harsher conditions related to phylogenetically conserved functional traits? Perennial plant communities were analysed in 89 gypsum-soil sites along a 400 km climate gradient from the central to southeastern Iberian Peninsula. Each local assemblage was analysed in 30 × 30 m plots and described based on taxonomic, functional (soil plant affinity) and phylogenetic parameters. The mean maximum temperatures in the hottest month, mean annual precipitation and their interaction terms were used as surrogates for the aridity conditions in generalized linear models. In the hottest locations, the gypsophily range narrowed and the mean gypsophily increased at the community level, thereby suggesting the filtering of species and the dominance of soil specialists in the actual plant assemblies. Drier sites had higher taxonomic diversity. The species that formed the perennial communities were close in evolutionary terms at the two ends of the aridity gradient. The mean maximum temperatures in the hottest month had the main abiotic filtering effect on perennial plant communities, which was mediated by the ability of species to grow on gypsum soils, and thus gypsum specialists dominated the species assemblies in the hottest locations. In contrast, the perennial communities on gypsum soils were relatively resistant to changes in precipitation. Our findings suggest that the warmer environmental conditions predicted by global change models will favour gypsum specialists over generalists., We found that the perennial communities on gypsum soils were relatively resistant to changes in precipitation; however, temperatures in the hottest month were the main factor responsible for the selection of the species that finally established to form communities. It should be noted that species adapted to grow on gypsum soils (i.e. gypsophites) dominated plant communities in the hottest locations. Our findings suggest that the warmer environmental conditions predicted by global change models will favour gypsum specialists over generalists.

According to the competitive exclusion principle, species with low competitive abilities should be excluded by more efficient competitors; yet, they generally remain as rare species. Here, we describe the positive and negative spatial association networks of 326 disparate assemblages, showing a general organization pattern that simultaneously supports the primacy of competition and the persistence of rare species. Abundant species monopolize negative associations in about 90% of the assemblages. On the other hand, rare species are mostly involved in positive associations, forming small network modules. Simulations suggest that positive interactions among rare species and microhabitat preferences are the most probable mechanisms underpinning this pattern and rare species persistence. More tree species can increase the carbon storage capacity of forests (here referred to as the more species hypothesis) through increased tree productivity and tree abundance resulting from complementarity, but they can also be the consequence of increased tree abundance through increased available energy (more individuals hypothesis). To test these two contrasting hypotheses, we analyse the most plausible pathways in the richness-abundance relationship and its stability along global climatic gradients. We show that positive effect of species richness on tree abundance only prevails in eight of the twenty-three forest regions considered in this study. In the other forest regions, any benefit from having more species is just as likely (9 regions) or even less likely (6 regions) than the effects of having more individuals. We demonstrate that diversity effects prevail in the most productive environments, and abundance effects become dominant towards the most limiting conditions. These findings can contribute to refining cost-effective mitigation strategies based on fostering carbon storage through increased tree diversity. Specifically, in less productive environments, mitigation measures should promote abundance of locally adapted and stress tolerant tree species instead of increasing species richness., Correlations between tree species diversity and tree abundance are well established, but the direction of the relationship is unresolved. QUESTIONS: Positive and negative associations among species influence the structure of plant communities. Yet how these plant associations are assembled at the community level is poorly understood. We propose a new approach that combines spatial ecology, network theory and trait‐based ecology to examine the assembly of plant–plant associations at the community level. LOCATION: Gemmipass, Swiss Alps. METHODS: We fully mapped an alpine plant community at the individual plant level, recording both plant coordinates and functional traits for each individual. We identified non‐random species associations using spatial point‐pattern analysis and partialled out the effect of abiotic heterogeneity. We then analysed the plant network structure and used plant traits to predict species associations. RESULTS: We identified 36 significant spatial associations between plant species, 34 positive and two negatives. Dominant, stress‐tolerant species such as Dryas octopetala, Linaria alpina and Leontodon montanus were highly connected in the network, whereas rare, water‐ and nutrient‐demanding species such as Saxifraga aizoides, Galium anisophyllon and Thymus praecox were less connected compared to random expectation. The plant network was clustered, meaning that species were overall more connected among each other than expected by chance. CONCLUSIONS: Positive associations among species characterized the studied plant community. Besides the primary effect of associations of the “foundation” species D. octopetala with other species, these “subordinate” plants were also associated with each other. Our study reveals the assembly of plant communities as driven by positive associations among stress‐tolerant pioneer species, highlighting their role in supporting the cohesiveness of alpine plant communities.

We employed an individual-species approach based on the plant’s eye perspective to disentangle the effects of individual species on community assembly in a dry tropical forest of southern Ecuador. We completely mapped a forest plot of 9 ha, and measured several functional traits (leaf area, specific leaf area, wood density, seed mass and maximum height) for tree and shrub species. To account for stochastic and habitat filtering effects, we fitted spatial point processes for the 23 more abundant species in the plot, which confirmed that all species responded to plot scale habitat filtering and 14 were dispersal-limited. We tested the hypothesis that facilitative interactions would be prevalent in this dry forest. For this, we compared the distribution of taxonomic (TD), functional (FD) and phylogenetic (PD) diversity in the neighborhood of the studied species with the diversity expected under a null model combining habitat filtering and stochastic assembly. We found that in the fine spatial scales where species interactions are expected to occur (i.e., neighborhoods of 1–20 m) eight species did not show any significant pattern for TD, FD or PD. Eleven species showed evidences of facilitation (i.e., accumulated more TD than expected) but in some cases the facilitated neighborhoods had more FD or PD than expected, suggesting the joint effect of facilitation and competition based on niche differences. One species showed less TD than expected, accompanied by lower FD and higher PD, suggesting competition based on fitness differences. Our study shows that in this dry tropical forest, where abiotic stress is prevalent, the assembly of diversity is controlled by environmental heterogeneity and both facilitative and competitive biotic processes, all of them acting simultaneously and at the same scale in the same neighborhoods.

Gypsum endemics occur in naturally-fragmented habitats, which may lead to genetic erosion and higher vulnerability to the genetic effects of anthropogenic fragmentation. Conversely, evolution in a fragmented landscape could increase their resilience to the effects of further fragmentation, but no evidence is available in either direction. In this study, we capitalize on previous results showing high genetic variation and a negative, yet small, effect of fragmentation on genetic variation on the gypsophile Lepidium subulatum, and jointly assess two other co-occurring dominant gypsophiles: Helianthemum squamatum and Centaurea hyssopifolia. We sampled individuals of the species in 20 populations varying in their fragment size and connectivity (≈400 plants/species; 1138 individuals total), and assessed genetic variation and population structure using species-specific microsatellite markers. Genetic variation was high in populations of the three study species, as shown by the high expected heterozygosity (0.454–0.735) and allelic richness (2.875–8.125). Population differentiation was in general low, but H. squamatum showed a stronger spatial structure than the other species. No effects of fragment size or connectivity were found for H. squamatum or C. hyssopifolia, i.e. differences among populations in genetic variation were not related to the size or connectivity of the sampled habitat remnants. These results contrast with the expectation that habitat specialists may be genetically impoverished. Furthermore, the correlation of key genetic diversity indices among species suggests that some fragments harbor more genetically-diverse populations than others, which provides insights for their conservation. We propose that these species may offset the genetic effects of human-mediated further habitat loss and increased isolation.

Vegetation above treeline constitutes one of the most vulnerable ecosystems to climate warming and other drivers of Global Change. Given the panorama of such an uncertain future facing these plant communities, it is critical to know how they respond to environmental changes and improve the knowledge on the potential impacts of climate change on their distribution. Recently, with the impressive development of trait-based approaches, relevant progress has been made to better understand the relationships between environmental conditions and plant communities. In this data paper, we describe data on abundances of 327 alpine plant species across 430 subplots of 2.4 m × 2.4 m in three mountain ranges (Sierra de Guadarrama and Pyrenees in Spain, and the Central Andes in Chile). We provide data on different environmental variables that represent variation in abiotic conditions and operate at different spatial scales (e.g., climatic, topographic and soil conditions). Data on six plant functional traits are also shown, which were measured on ten individuals of each species, following standard protocols. We provided the dataset as tables in the supplementary material. This information could be used to analyse the relationship between the alpine vegetation and changes in environmental conditions, and ultimately, to understand ecosystem functioning and guide conservation strategies of theses threatened and valuable ecosystems. The aim of this study was to disentangle the effects of landscape configuration (i.e., fragment area, connectivity, and proximity to a busy highway) on the assembly of annual plant communities at different spatial scales. Our main hypothesis was that larger and more connected fragments would have higher species densities per plot and this may result in differences in turnover and nestedness patterns at the fine spatial scales where plants interact. Specifically, since Mediterranean annuals are known to form strong competitive hierarchies, we expected to find a nested pattern of beta diversity due to sequential species loss. The study area was a fragmented gypsum habitat in central Spain with a semiarid climate where two fragmentation drivers coexist: agricultural practices and a roadway. Larger fragments had higher species densities per plot (20 × 20 m). Nevertheless, we detected no effect on the species assembly at fine spatial scales (30 × 30 cm). However, when the fragment connectivity was high the species that appeared in poor quadrats (30 × 30 cm) comprised a subset of the species in rich quadrats. These results agree well with the establishment of strong competitive hierarchies among annual species. The distance to the highway influenced the identity of the species established in the community (i.e., species composition) at fine spatial scales, but we detected no effect on species turnover, nestedness, or species densities. The main conclusion of our study is that the effects of habitat fragmentation extend beyond the landscape scale and they determine the spatial assembly at fine spatial scales.

Global change pressures are jeopardizing the functioning and structure of most tropical forests and clouding the future for their biodiversity and provided services. Although the impact of direct destruction through deforestation and fragmentation is currently in the research portfolio, overgrazing, which is more diffuse and generalized but chronic, especially in the seasonal dry forests, has been by far less addressed. Overgrazing can lead to a dramatic change in natural regeneration, often triggering the collapse of dominant species. The almost monospecific dry forests of Bursera graveolens, one of the most representative forest of the Tumbesian region, are on the verge of extinction due to both direct destruction and chronic overgrazing and regeneration collapse in forest remnants. Here, we evaluated the impact of a very simple measure, the installation of fences, on the regeneration of ecological processes affecting the dominant species. We mapped and measured all Bursera individuals with a height greater than or equal to 30 cm in six 1-ha plots, 3 within and 3 outside fenced areas. Using spatial point pattern analysis, we inferred the importance of demographic and ecological processes affecting adults and juveniles in fenced and unfenced areas. The spatial structure of adults was similar in fenced and unfenced areas, varying from random to aggregated patterns, showing that fences did not interfere with ecological processes affecting adult trees. On the contrary, we found 2765 juveniles in the three fenced plots but none in free ranging areas. Juveniles showed heterogeneous clustered patterns, and their distribution and growth were negatively influenced both by the presence and the height of adult trees. On average, there was an exclusion zone of 10 m around adult trees were recruitment of juveniles was limited. Competition among juveniles appeared to be negligible. All in all, these results suggest that, in addition to recruitment, two of the main mechanisms that rule tree population dynamics in tropical forests, i.e., dispersal limitation and a Janzen-Connell-like mechanism favoring recruiting far from adult trees have been immediately restored in the fenced area. This shows that fencing is a viable tool for a fast regeneration and conservation of Bursera forests.

The variability in space and time of a given set of traits can describe the biological activity of plants and influence species interactions and the properties of communities and ecosystems. However, seasonal variance in foliar traits of tree species has been poorly addressed in the Mediterranean climate despite its potential implications in fundamental processes such as light interception strategies. Due to seasonal variation in the apparent sun path’s trajectory, predictable radiation patterns across crown positions may determine the variance partitioning for light-related leaf traits in evergreens. We hypothesize that in the most exposed part of the crown i.e. south, trait variance should be constraint due to abiotic stress compared to less exposed crown positions. We partitioned the variance across five nested scales for a set of traits that capture leaf form, structure, position relative to the sun and the potential area exposed in a given time in Olea europaea L. trees. The scales included temporal variation due to sampling in two different seasons and twelve spatially structured crown positions within trees. We conducted multivariate analyses to assess the variability among traits, within trees and among trees The variance partitioning at the season scale was low and the structure conserved between seasons for most traits. Intraindividual variance was conspicuous for all traits evidencing a spatial gradient of trait distribution within trees from outer to inner layers and among paired crown sectors (North-East, South-West). Leaf angles and potential exposure to direct light had an absence of variance at scales above crown positions. The spatial distribution of crown sectors and layers had a distinct influence on the expression of leaf attributes among traits. Environmental filters may constrain variability on the outermost layer of the crown and on all crown positions during summer and winter, due to combination of the high irradiance and water stress in Mediterranean climates.

Questions: How do roadsides interact with patches of natural vegetation in shaping perennial plant communities in fragmented agricultural areas? Are the observed differences due to the type of roadside (i.e. roadcuts, embankments or road verges) or are there other factors driving community structure and composition? Location: Stretch of motorway A3 and its surrounding area, central Spain. Methods: We analysed the variation in perennial plant species composition and diversity among 92 plots (400 m2 ). The plots were located in five different environmental scenarios, three of them in a fragmented landscape (patches of natural vegetation, embankments and roadcuts) and two in an unfragmented landscape (natural vegetation and road verges). In each plot, the cover of each perennial plant species and eight soil variables were assessed. We used phi coefficient of correlation to determine the scenario preferences of each species, Kruskal–Wallis tests to compare the soil variables between landscape scenarios and eight descriptive variables of the community, and RDA and partial RDA to evaluate the relative importance of the type of environmental scenario on the floristic community. Results: We identified 130 species, with only 16 species never appearing on roadsides. Perennial total cover, species richness, inverse Simpson’s index and number of protected species showed no significant differences between the five scenarios considered. In contrast, the number of nutrient-demanding species and restricted-range diversity had lower values in natural vegetation plots. Soil variables and the type of scenario together explained 28.5% of the species composition variation. Of this percentage, 6.8% was explained by soil variables, 12.1% by the type of scenario and 10.0% of the variation was shared between the two data sets. Conclusions: Our results show that almost all perennial species occurring in natural vegetation patches were also able to reach and settle in roadsides. However, soil conditions and other specific roadside variables generate different plant communities. In spite of the differences found between the perennial plant community of roadsides and their surrounding area, roadsides are excellent reservoirs of biodiversity.

Habitat fragmentation is a major driver of global change that has operated historically on Mediterranean ecosystems. However, more needs to be understood about how fragmentation influences ecological interactions, particularly pollination. Gypsum outcrops are historically fragmented Mediterranean habitats and settings for the evolution of many endangered soil-specialist plants with narrow ranges. In this study, we aimed to determine how fragmentation (area and connectivity) affects: (i) pollinator community composition and (ii) structural properties of pollination networks; and whether there are differences in the effects of fragmentation on: (iii) the number of interactions and visits among pollinator functional groups; and (iv) the number of interactions and specialisation degree between soil-specialist and soil-generalist plants. We characterised the degree of fragmentation and the pollination network structures in 12 gypsum habitat fragments embedded in a cropland matrix during two consecutive years. We found significant relationships between fragmentation and network structure. The effects of fragmentation differed among pollinator functional groups, but not between soil-specialist and soil-generalist plants, in terms of number of interactions. However, the relatively higher pollinator specialisation of soil-specialist plants suggested greater dependence on pollinators. Inter-annual variations in the network structures demonstrated the importance of temporal replication. The observed patterns related to the landscape structure and pollination at both the network and species levels provide insights into the key ecological processes in gypsum islands. These findings may help to identify the potential drivers of species persistence, especially for endangered soil-specialist plants with narrow ranges in a changing scenario with exacerbated habitat fragmentation.

Light-related leaf traits variation is structured among individuals and within individuals in a latitudinal pattern from the equator (high variation) toward the poles (lower variation). Intraspecific variation in leaf functional traits can play a crucial role at multiple ecological scales. However, our understanding of leaf functional trait variation (FV) across spatial scales is limited. Moreover, the influence of FV in specific responses to the environment remains poorly assessed. We investigated FV across multiple nested ecological scales in a set of leaf traits related to light interception and photosynthetic performance in eight populations of Olea europaea trees distributed over a wide latitudinal gradient (~60°). Specifically, we measured SLA, leaf shape, leaf’s spatial position (leaf angles) and leaf’s potential exposure to direct sunlight (silhouette area of the leaf blade and silhouette to area ratio of the leaf blade). The variability in leaf traits revealed two main patterns depending on the considered trait. Differences among sites absorbed >50% of the trait variation related to leaf shape and structure. Conversely, traits related to leaf position and exposure to direct light varied mostly within individuals among crown positions. The variation within trees for multiple traits ranged from 4 to 14%. Trees of equatorial populations had wider, thinner and more exposed leaves to direct light than trees of the remaining populations. The FV for multiple leaf traits at the tree scale was spatially structured within the tree crown and was higher for populations at the equator than for populations located in other latitudes. The differences among traits and scales in the magnitude of FV revealed a complex structure that could be linked to local adaptation.

Background and aims Local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity are considered key mechanisms for coping with climate warming, especially for plant species that inhabit island-like habitats. In Spain a complete guild of edaphic specialists, most of them threatened, occurs in gypsum outcrops, but how these species will respond to climate change has received little attention. Methods A reciprocal sowing experiment was performed to determine the extent of local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity in five gypsophytes with contrasting distributions along a climate gradient. Germination, seedling growth and survival were recorded during a 4-year period. Key results Plants responded plastically according to their positions along the regional climate gradient, as well as locally between matched locations. All species exhibited highly plastic responses and stress-tolerant behaviours, especially in terms of seedling survival during summer drought. However, no evidence of local adaptation was detected in any of the locations, where local individuals never performed better than those from other sites. In some sites, both germination and seedling recruitment were higher irrespective of parent plant origin. Conclusions The lack of local adaptation to drought displayed at the regeneration stage indicates limited capacity for in situ genetic response to new climate scenarios. Nevertheless, a plastic response along the climatic gradient does suggest a wider species-level capacity to enable these edaphic specialists to cope with increasing aridity over coming decades.

Many studies have shown evidence of very rapid natural colonization of trees on roadslopes. Tree colonization on roadslopes can be a usefultool in the ecological restoration ofthese degraded areas. However, little is known about the characteristics of the tree species capable of colonizing these novel habitats. Moreover, it is necessary to know how tree species respond to the two main limitations in these areas: microsite availability (i.e., roadslope characteristics) and seed arrival, which is related to propagule source, dispersion vector and landscape characteristics. The present study aims to investigate the natural colonization of tree species on roadslopes, as well as the factors determining their occurrence. We identified all tree individuals on 150 roadslopes, along 51 km of a motorway. A total of 1143 individuals belonging to 18 species was recorded. Most individuals found resulted from a natural colonization process, although we found various fruit trees (present in 7 roadslopes) and Robinia pseudoacacia (2 roadslopes), which are probably associated with unintentional human-mediated seed dispersal. Only the six most abundant species were analysed in detail: Populus nigra, Quercus ilex, Quercus pyrenaica, Fraxinus angustifolia, Salix spp. and Ulmus pumila. Each roadslope was characterized both by site variables and by surrounding variables. We analysed the effect of the descriptive variables on the occurrence and density of each species on the roadslopes, and we subsequently used decision trees (classification and regression trees) to analyse the combined effect of the different predictors considered. Our results show successful tree colonization on the roadslopes, although they appear to indicate limitations to colonization associated with the availability of propagules. Furthermore, tree species dispersed by animals required a continuous flow of seeds favoured by an appropriate community of seed dispersers and a suitable landscape structure. By contrast, wind-dispersed tree species basically need favourable site characteristics on the roadslopes.
