The catfishes are a group of economically important freshwater fish in China, which in recent years have suffered heavy losses as a result of bacterial outbreaks. In this study, we examined the diversity of the microbiome of infected skin mucus of yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and analyzed the bacterial pathogens. We found several common pathogenic bacteria, such as Aeromonas spp., Vibrio spp., Moraxella spp. and Proteus spp. present in both fish species, but with significantly different bacterial community structures. We isolated and cultured Aeromonas veronii and Proteus mirabilis and validated their infectivity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and yellow catfish. Intraperitoneal injection of either bacteria into zebrafish, but not immersion, caused 100% mortality and ovary fragmentation. Yellow catfish was more sensitive than zebrafish with 100% mortality in the immersion challenges with A. veronii or P. mirabilis, and with a higher abundance of A. veronii in the P. mirabilis-challenged group compared to control. To our knowledge, this is the first study on the pathogenicity of P. mirabilis in yellow catfish, and the results will help to develop effective strategies for the disease prevention and control in catfish farming.

Coastal rivers and estuaries provide habitat and migratory corridors for freshwater estuarine-opportunists. We evaluated movement patterns of 61 blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) in the tidal York and Rappahannock rivers in Virginia, USA with acoustic telemetry from July 2015 to June 2016. To evaluate river-specific movements, we utilized a multistate Cormack–Jolly–Seber (CJS) model within a Bayesian framework to estimate probabilities of detection and transition (movement) among established salinity zones (i.e., tidal-fresh (0‰–0.5‰), oligohaline (>0.5‰–5‰), mesohaline (>5‰–18‰)). We considered flow as an environmental covariate. Despite high site fidelity in tidal-fresh zones, some individuals displayed movements into oligohaline and mesohaline habitats indicative of partial migration. Once downstream movement occurred, the probability of staying in the new salinity zone was higher than the probability of movements to other salinity zones. In the Rappahannock River only, movement upstream from mesohaline habitats was associated with below average flow. As flow increased, the probability of remaining in oligohaline and mesohaline zones increased. Our study shows blue catfish can move into downstream areas of tidal rivers with elevated salinities and that increased freshwater flow may allow them to remain in these habitats for extended durations.

Blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus, the largest catfish in North America and an invasive species in Chesapeake Bay estuaries, has experienced explosive population growth, negatively impacting native species. They have strong pectoral spines that can be locked and rubbed against the pectoral girdle to produce stridulation sounds although sound production during behavioral interactions is unstudied. We examined agonistic behavior in juveniles by allowing individuals to establish a territory and introducing an intruder. Big (43–50 cm total length) and small (36–41 cm) fish were paired within and across size ranges. Territory was considered established when a fish remained in its shelter for over an hour. Fish typically entered the shelter head first and maintained that orientation. They used a variety of agonistic behaviors in shelter defense including aggressive contact, caudal sweeping, and standoff but not the production of stridulation sounds. Individuals often utilized different behaviors indicating less stereotypy than in many fishes, and there were differences in incidence of behaviors between big and small fish. Residents and larger fish did not always win, perhaps due to juvenile status and low fitness consequences of territorial possession.

As one economically important fish in the southeastern Himalayas, the giant devil catfish (Bagarius yarrelli) has been known for its extraordinarily large body size. It can grow up to 2 m, whereas the non-Bagarius sisorids only reach 10–30 cm. Another outstanding characteristic of Bagarius species is the salmonids-like reddish flesh color. Both body size and flesh color are interesting questions in science and also valuable features in aquaculture that worth of deep investigations. Bagarius species therefore are ideal materials for studying body size evolution and color depositions in fish muscles, and also potential organisms for extensive utilization in Asian freshwater aquaculture. In a combination of Illumina and PacBio sequencing technologies, we de novo assembled a 571-Mb genome for the giant devil catfish from a total of 153.4-Gb clean reads. The scaffold and contig N50 values are 3.1 and 1.6 Mb, respectively. This genome assembly was evaluated with 93.4% of Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs completeness, 98% of transcripts coverage, and highly homologous with a chromosome-level-based genome of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). We detected that 35.26% of the genome assembly is composed of repetitive elements. Employing homology, de novo, and transcriptome-based annotations, we annotated a total of 19,027 protein-coding genes for further use. In summary, we generated the first high-quality genome assembly of the giant devil catfish, which provides an important genomic resource for its future studies such as the body size and flesh color issues, and also for facilitating the conservation and utilization of this valuable catfish.

We herein document the metazoan parasite component communities of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus), and their commercially cultured hybrid (female I. punctatus × male I. furcatus) communally stocked as parasite-free fingerlings into each of 3 experimental earthen ponds (each pond harbored channel catfish, blue catfish, and hybrid catfish). The fundamental objective of this work was to test the hypothesis that hybrid catfish exhibit less susceptibility to infection by metazoan parasites than do their parental species. Fingerlings of each catfish species from each pond were parasitologically examined monthly for 1 yr. A total of 112 channel catfish, 74 blue catfish, and 209 hybrid catfish were necropsied; collectively resulting in the detection of 14 metazoan parasite species. Channel catfish had the most diverse component community (12 species: 3 myxozoans, 2 monogenoids, 3 cestodes, 1 nematode, 1 unionid, and 2 copepods) followed by hybrid catfish (11 species: 3 myxozoans, 2 monogenoids, 2 cestodes, 1 nematode, 1 unionid, and 2 copepods) and blue catfish (6 species: 1 myxozoan, 2 monogenoids, 2 cestodes, and 1 copepod). These results do not support the assertion that hybrid catfish are demonstrably more resistant to parasitic infection than either parental species. New host–parasite records herein comprise Corallotaenia intermedia (Fritts, 1959) Freze, 1965, and Corallotaenia parafimbriata (Befus and Freeman, 1973) Scholz, de Chambrier, Mariaux, and Kucha, 2011 for channel catfish; Henneguya sp., C. parafimbriata, and Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada, 1930) Yin, 1956 for blue catfish; and Henneguya adiposaMinchew, 1977, Henneguya bulbosusRosser, Griffin, Quiniou, Khoo, and Pote, 2014, Ligictaluridus mirabilis (Mueller, 1937) Beverley-Burton, 1985, Ligictaluridus pricei (Mueller, 1936) Beverley-Burton, 1984, Essexiella fimbriata (Essex, 1928) Scholz, de Chambrier, Mariaux, and Kucha, 2011, C. parafimbriata, Spiroxys sp., Pyganodon sp., N. japonicus, and Achtheres sp. for hybrid catfish. To our knowledge, this is the most extensive parasitological study of this particular hybrid catfish, or any hybrid catfish, published to date.

Some fishes rely on large regions of the dorsal (epaxial) and ventral (hypaxial) body muscles to power suction feeding. Epaxial and hypaxial muscles are known to act as motors, powering rapid mouth expansion by shortening to elevate the neurocranium and retract the pectoral girdle, respectively. However, some species, like catfishes, use little cranial elevation. Are these fishes instead using the epaxial muscles to forcefully anchor the head, and if so, are they limited to lower-power strikes? We used X-ray imaging to measure epaxial and hypaxial length dynamics (fluoromicrometry) and associated skeletal motions (XROMM) during 24 suction feeding strikes from three channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). We also estimated the power required for suction feeding from oral pressure and dynamic endocast volume measurements. Piscivorous birds are the primary source of catfish (Ictalurus spp.) depredation at aquaculture facilities in northwestern Mississippi. Of particular concern is the Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus), which can cost aquaculture producers millions of dollars annually through the depredation of cultured fish. Historical research conducted in the early 2000s estimated cormorant use of aquaculture ponds in the region, but aquaculture area has decreased by more than 70% since those estimates were made. With less aquaculture available, we predicted cormorant densities on aquaculture would be greater today than historically. Applying a similar methodology as in historical studies, we used aerial surveys to collect data on cormorants at night roosts and using catfish aquaculture ponds during 3 consecutive winter seasons, beginning in 2015. Although the mean annual number of cormorants at roosts in the Delta during our study was 64% less than historically, we found no significant change in densities on aquaculture, suggesting that aquaculture area is likely the factor influencing cormorant occurrence in northwestern Mississippi. During contemporary surveys we also measured the abundance of Great Blue Herons (Ardea herodias) and Great Egrets (A. alba) on the aquaculture clusters, and built predictive models of abundance relative to variables associated with forage at and surrounding the clusters. We found abundance of all 3 species was strongly related to the amount of aquaculture area both within and surrounding a cluster, although patterns varied by species. Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus are an invasive, yet economically important species in the Chesapeake Bay. However, their impact on the trophic ecology of this system is not well understood. In order to provide in‐depth analysis of predation by Blue Catfish, we identified prey items using high‐throughput DNA sequencing (HTS) of entire gastrointestinal tracts from 134 samples using two genetic markers, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) and the nuclear 18S ribosomal RNA gene. We compared our HTS results to a more traditional “hybrid” approach that coupled morphological identification with DNA barcoding. The hybrid study was conducted on additional Blue Catfish samples (n = 617 stomachs) collected from the same location and season in the previous year. Taxonomic representation with HTS vastly surpassed that achieved with the hybrid methodology in Blue Catfish. Significantly, our HTS study identified several instances of at‐risk and invasive species consumption not identified using the hybrid method, supporting the hypothesis that previous studies using morphological methods may greatly underestimate consumption of critical species. Finally, we report the novel finding that Blue Catfish diet diversity inversely correlates to daily flow rates, perhaps due to higher mobility and prey‐seeking behaviors exhibited during lower flow., We compared high‐throughput sequencing (HTS) to traditional morphological diet analysis methods in Blue Catfish and found that HTS vastly outperforms visual methods, even when coupled with barcoding of unidentified tissues. We identified levels of at‐risk species consumption, including Atlantic Sturgeon and alosines, by Blue Catfish higher than those previously reported. Additionally, our study details the novel finding that Blue Catfish diet diversity is inversely related to flow rates.

Native and introduced fish can serve as reservoirs for pathogens of cultured fish species. In the current study, 351 archived western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis collected from experimental catfish production ponds in Mississippi, USA, were surveyed histologically to evaluate their potential as vectors for fish pathogens. In addition to epitheliocystis and multiple metazoan parasites, 8 fish had widespread basophilic colonies of small Gram-positive rods associated primarily with stroma supporting the skeletal muscle and bone, as well as connective tissue components of other tissues and organ systems, such as perivascular adventitia and basement membranes. These findings were consistent with spaC-type Erysipelothrix sp. infections in ornamental fish cultured in the USA. The 16S rRNA, gyrase B (gyrB), and surface protective antigen (spa) genes were amplified and sequenced from bacterial colonies excised from paraffin-embedded tissue sections using laser capture microdissection. Molecular data confirmed the identity of a spaC-type Erysipelothrix sp., which grouped phylogenetically with spaC-type Erysipelothrix sp. from diseased ornamental fish. Given the significance of commercial catfish aquaculture in the southeastern USA and the widespread distribution of mosquitofish in catfish ponds throughout the region, infectivity trials with channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were conducted. Catfish fingerlings were exposed to a spaC-type Erysipelothrix sp. isolate by intracoelomic injection and gavage. No mortality was observed in catfish exposed by either route, and surviving fish demonstrated no significant histopathologic lesions, suggesting channel catfish have low susceptibility to the bacteria. Further research is warranted to investigate the susceptibility of other cultured fish species to this emergent fish pathogen.

Ictalurid catfishes (Siluriformes) in North America harbor proteocephalid tapeworms of the subfamily Corallobothriinae. Type species of 2 of 3 genera of these tapeworms from ictalurids are redescribed, based on museum and newly collected material. Essexiella fimbriata (Essex, 1928) is typified mainly by a wide, umbrella-shaped scolex with a metascolex formed by numerous folds of tissue, anteriorly directed suckers without sphincters, vitellarium bent inwards posteriorly, "flower-shaped" uterus (with anterior, lateral, and posterior diverticula), and a conspicuously pre-equatorial genital atrium. Verified host records of this cestode are only from 3 species of Ictalurus Rafinesque, 1820. Megathylacoides giganteum (Essex, 1928), which seems to be specific to the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), possesses a globular scolex, with a weakly developed metascolex formed by tissue folds posterior to the suckers, anterolaterally directed suckers with large semilunar sphincters, proglottids that are widest at the level of the genital atrium at the anterior third of the proglottid, and uterine diverticula that do not reach the vitelline follicles laterally. A new subfamily, Essexiellinae Scholz and Barcak, is proposed to accommodate species of EssexiellaScholz, de Chambrier, Mariaux and Kuchta, 2011 (type genus), MegathylacoidesJones, Kerley and Sneed, 1956, and CorallotaeniaFreze, 1965 from ictalurid catfishes in the Nearctic Region. These tapeworms possess a metascolex, medullary genital organs, uterus lined with numerous chromophilic cells, pre-equatorial genital atrium, and uterine development of type 2. The new subfamily was monophyletic in all molecular phylogenetic analyses, being most closely related to 3 Neotropical proteocephalids from the redtail catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), but distant from all remaining proteocephalid tapeworms from freshwater fishes in North America.

Diel changes in occurrence and feeding habits of juvenile channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were examined in offshore breakwater areas in Lake Kasumigaura, Japan, to understand their nocturnal behavioral ecology within a lentic habitat. Juveniles (20–56 mm in standard length) occurred more abundantly in evening and nighttime than in daytime and fed mainly during darkness hours. Major food items comprised chironomid larvae and cladocerans. The relative proportion of those items in stomach contents changed from daytime to evening and nighttime, possibly being partly related to diel changes in prey accessibility.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a Gram-negative bacterium ubiquitous to freshwater and brackish aquatic environments that can cause disease in fish, humans, reptiles, and birds. Recent severe outbreaks of disease in commercial channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) aquaculture ponds have been associated with a hypervirulent Aeromonas hydrophila strain (VAH) that is genetically distinct from less virulent strains. The epidemiology of this disease has not been determined. Given that research has shown that Great Egrets (Ardea alba) can shed viable hypervirulent A. hydrophila after consuming diseased fish, we hypothesized that Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus), American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), and Wood Storks (Mycteria americana) could also serve as a reservoir for VAH and spread the pathogen during predation of fish in uninfected catfish ponds. All three species, when fed VAH-infected catfish, shed viable VAH in their feces, demonstrating their potential to spread VAH.

We examined why the lower Little Colorado River (LCR), Arizona continues to be dominated by four native fish species despite decades of encroachment by nine nonnative species. Most perennial flow begins at Blue Spring, located at river kilometer (RKM) 20.74 above the LCR's mouth, which is supplemented downriver by other springs. Blue Spring's water is extremely supersaturated with dissolved CO2 (658 mg/L), and at baseflow the CO2 concentrations apparently functioned as a fish-barrier for about 1 km further downriver until it outgassed to 288 mg/L. Thereafter, CO2 outgassed to 202 mg/L by the top of Chute Falls (RKM 14.20) and 76 mg/L near the river's mouth. Chute Falls, and high CO2 levels above it, obstruct upriver, but not downriver, fish movements; however, we still captured fishes from eight nonnative species above this falls. Our findings indicate most warmwater nonnative fishes in the LCR were immigrants from upriver sources within and bordering the intermittent corridor that invaded the system during floods, while most coldwater trout invaded from the Colorado River. Most nonnative species failed or were severely limited at reproducing progeny in the LCR, except occasionally by channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and fathead minnow Pimephales promelas in the lower 13.57 km corridor, which was likely related to CO2. Correlation tests suggested severe flood and/or suspended sediment regimes reduced populations of fathead minnows, red shiners Cyprinella lutrensis, and plains killifish Fundulus zebrinus in the LCR. Conversely, severe suspended sediment regimes (especially ≥60,000 mg/L) increased channel catfish, black bullhead Ameiurus melas, and common carp Cyprinus carpio, hypothetically by paralyzing these fishes upriver, whereby many drifted downstream and recovered in the lower LCR; however, their abundances decreased after prolonged periods of high CO2. Nonnative fishes are controlled in the LCR by the system's endemic abiotic conditions.

Globally, invasive species cause extensive economic damage and are a major threat to biodiversity. Generalist species are particularly dangerous invaders, as they can thrive in degraded habitats and endure environmental stochasticity, often outcompeting more specialized native taxa. Blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus were first introduced into the Chesapeake Bay during the 1970s, and now form dense populations in several tidal rivers. Despite being labeled as a dangerous invasive, the feeding ecology of this species is largely unknown. We used a stratified random design to collect stomachs from 16,110 blue catfish in tidal freshwater, oligohaline, and mesohaline segments of the James, Pamunkey, Mattaponi, and Rappahannock Rivers. Indices of diet breadth and omnivory reveal that blue catfish are generalist omnivores with some of the highest diet breadths ever observed in an estuarine fish species, while trophic level calculations demonstrate that blue catfish are a mesopredator occupying lower trophic levels than previously claimed. Cumulative prey curves revealed that large numbers of stomachs are necessary to adequately characterize the diet of blue catfish, thus previous diet descriptions of this species should be considered with caution. Blue catfish feed primarily on invasive aquatic vegetation and Asian clams, though the economically-valuable blue crab Callinectes sapidus is also consumed regularly. While the per capita impact of blue catfish on imperiled native species appears to be low, this impact could still be substantial due to high population densities.

Different methods used to store specimens, even for short periods, can notably affect morphometric characteristics such as colour, length and shape. As a consequence, in the case of samples that have to be analysed morphometrically, the right preservation method is crucial. In this study, two comparably easy applicable methods, the effects of freezing and moderate cool storage on morphological traits, were studied on specimens of the scaleless North American channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, an alien species to European freshwaters of increasing concern. Results revealed that freezing, like preservation with alcohol or formalin, affected the generally considered characteristics (colour, standard length, fork length, total length, shape), while cool storage was shown to preserve most traits without notable alteration, an important difference when studying potentially adapting alien species. Implications are discussed.

Ictalurus furcatus (Blue Catfish) provide trophy recreational fishing opportunities in Virginia's tidal rivers; however, potential ecological impacts are of concern. We used mark-recapture techniques and electrofishing in 2007 and 2014 to estimate Blue Catfish density and biomass in Powell Creek. A 66% decline in fish density occurred between 2007 (708 fish/ha) and 2014 (239 fish/ha) and biomass declined by 31% over the same timeframe (266 kg/ha to 185 kg/ha). These findings are supported by long-term monitoring trends in the tidal James River. Here, we provide: (1) data relative to temporal shifts in abundance and biomass, (2) data for use in subsequent population-dynamics analyses, and, (3) points of caution when assuming temporally static populations for introduced species. We demonstrated the feasibility of low-frequency electrofishing and mark—recapture methods to estimate Blue Catfish abundance, and recommend use of the approach where catfish abundance estimates are important.

This study used microsatellite loci to provide evidence of isolation by distance and an effect of artificial impoundments on the genetic diversity of Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus from the Wabash and Ohio rivers. The Wabash River is the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi River in the USA, and the Ohio River is highly impounded, yet both rivers support large Channel Catfish fisheries. There was a significant positive relationship between genetic differentiation and geographic distance indicating isolation by distance. Clustering with the programs, STRUCTURE and GENELAND, and principal component analysis revealed multiple genetic clusters, and several sites had results consistent with adults existing as mixtures of genetic groups. These results suggest that the rate of straying among reproductive sites or dispersal is dependent on geographic distance. We evaluated freeze brands on Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus and hybrid catfish (female Channel Catfish × male Blue Catfish I. furcatus) to determine suitability of the technique for identification of year-class on ictalurid catfishes. Freeze brands were applied to fish in a hatchery setting, and adipose fins were removed as a secondary mark. Marked fish were stocked into two Kansas reservoirs within 3 d after marking. Fish were sampled with a suite of gear types for 3 years after the initial stocking in 2013. All captured catfish were observed for the presence of a freeze brand and an adipose fin. A logistic regression model estimated 80% brand retention for Channel Catfish through 460 d. The logistic regression model for hybrid catfish brand retention as a function of days at large was not significant, but retention remained near 80% throughout the 3-year study period. The introduction of a non-native freshwater fish, blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus, in tributaries of Chesapeake Bay resulted in the establishment of fisheries and in the expansion of the population into brackish habitats. Blue catfish are an invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay region, and efforts are underway to limit their impacts on native communities. Key characteristics of the population (population size, survival rates) are unknown, but such knowledge is useful in understanding the impact of blue catfish in estuarine systems. We estimated population size and survival rates of blue catfish in tidal habitats of the James River subestuary. We tagged 34,252 blue catfish during July–August 2012 and 2013; information from live recaptures (n = 1177) and dead recoveries (n = 279) were used to estimate annual survival rates and population size using Barker’s Model in a Robust Design and allowing for heterogeneity in detection probabilities. The blue catfish population in the 12-km study area was estimated to be 1.6 million fish in 2013 (95% confidence interval [CI] adjusted for overdispersion: 926,307–2,914,208 fish). Annual apparent survival rate estimates were low: 0.16 (95% CI 0.10–0.24) in 2012–2013 and 0.44 (95% CI 0.31–0.58) in 2013–2014 and represent losses from the population through mortality, permanent emigration, or both. The tagged fish included individuals that were large enough to exhibit piscivory and represented size classes that are likely to colonize estuarine habitats. The large population size that we estimated was unexpected for a freshwater fish in tidal habitats and highlights the need to effectively manage such species.

Trematodes of the subclass Digenea are a major impediment to catfish aquaculture in the southeastern United States. Catfish production ponds are ideal feeding grounds for piscivorous birds, and given the variety of aquatic snails that inhabit these ponds, they offer a prime environment for the propagation of digenetic life cycles. In July 2014, snails morphologically consistent with Biomphalaria havanensis L. Pfeiffer, 1839, were collected from 2 different catfish production ponds in the catfish farming region of eastern Mississippi. These snails were refractory to Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907, infection, and phylogenetic analyses based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS)1 and ITS2 fragments placed the snails within the B. havanensis/obstructa complex. Some (1.5%) of these snails shed cercariae morphologically and molecularly consistent with Drepanocephalus auritus Kudlai, Kostadinova, Pulis, and Tkach, 2015 (formerly reported as Drepanocephalus spathans Dietz, 1909), an echinostomatid parasite of the double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus Lesson, 1831, and channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus Rafinesque, 1818. Juvenile channel catfish were challenged individually with ∼275 cercariae of D. auritus per fish, resulting in limited mortality (2 out of 10 fish). Surviving fish were euthanatized 7 d postchallenge, and the presence of metacercariae was confirmed histologically. Parasite-associated pathology was consistent with previous studies. Subsequent molecular analysis of 5 different gene targets confirmed morphological identifications. Previous research has suggested the existence of discrete North American and South American haplotypes of D. auritus. Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit 1 sequences demonstrated that both haplotypes were released by snails in this study, suggesting a broader distribution of these genetic variants than previously thought. Along with Planorbella trivolvis Say, 1817, this work identifies a second snail species common to catfish aquaculture ponds that releases D. auritus infective to juvenile channel catfish and is the first report of B. havanensis as an intermediate host for D. auritus in North America.

The channel catfish virus (CCV) is a pathogenic herpesvirus that infects channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus in pond aquaculture in the southeastern USA. Mannose-binding lectin (MBL), an innate immune protein, could play an important role in the innate response of channel catfish by binding to CCV. Cell cultures of CCV were grown in channel catfish ovary cells (CCOC). A dot-immunoblot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was done to determine the binding ability of 5 mo old channel catfish serum MBL (26.2 µg ml-1) to CCOC infected with CCV. Two separate nitrocellulose membrane blotting techniques were done using uninfected and infected CCOC. The uninfected CCOC decreased by 29.3 and 33.4% in their binding of channel catfish MBL when compared with infected CCOC using the 2 membrane procedures. The combined average binding ability of channel catfish MBL towards infected CCOC was therefore 31.4% greater when comparing the infected and uninfected CCOC. Normalization equation values of MBL for the 5 mo old catfish were compared for the 2 membrane binding procedures. The 2 normalization values were very close (142 and 150) in binding ability of MBL to the infected CCOC. The 5 mo catfish serum had twice the concentration of MBL (26.2 µg ml-1) compared to 7 mo catfish serum (13.2 µg ml-1), and the binding percentage of 5 mo serum was 2.4 times greater in infected than in uninfected cells. This demonstrates that the binding of channel catfish serum MBL to CCV is concentration dependent and is related to serum concentrations of MBL.

AQUI-S 20E (10% eugenol) has been shown to be an effective fish sedative for freshwater finfish, but to be approved for use in the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration must be provided with data demonstrating the product is safe to treated animals. Accordingly, we evaluated the safety of AQUI-S 20E when used to sedate Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, Yellow Perch Perca flavescens, and Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus. SynopsisMost predatory ray-finned fishes swallow their food whole, which can pose a significant challenge, given that prey items can be half as large as the predators themselves. How do fish transport captured food from the mouth to the stomach? Prior work indicates that, in general, fish use the pharyngeal jaws to manipulate food into the esophagus, where peristalsis is thought to take over. We used X-Ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology to track prey transport in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). By reconstructing the 3D motions of both the food and the catfish, we were able to track how the catfish move food through the head and into the stomach. Food enters the oral cavity at high velocities as a continuation of suction and stops in the approximate location of the branchial basket before moving in a much slower, more complex path toward the esophagus. This slow phase coincides with little motion in the head and no substantial mouth opening or hyoid depression. Once the prey is in the esophagus, however, its transport is surprisingly tightly correlated with gulping motions (hyoid depression, girdle retraction, hypaxial shortening, and mouth opening) of the head. Although the transport mechanism itself remains unknown, to our knowledge, this is the first description of synchrony between cranial expansion and esophageal transport in a fish. Our results provide direct evidence of prey transport within the esophagus and suggest that peristalsis may not be the sole mechanism of esophageal transport in catfish.

Given its ubiquity, it is not surprising that agriculture, including finfish aquaculture, contributes to food webs worldwide and is used by numerous wildlife for foraging and meeting other needs. Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) impact United States commercial aquaculture and are considered the primary avian predator in catfish (Ictalurus spp.) aquaculture facilities in the Mississippi Delta. Recent changes in aquaculture practices, regulatory policies, and decreased overall hectares in production prompted this study that assessed cormorant consumption of catfish in relation to their night roosts through surveys and diet analysis. Cormorants were collected from night roosts from October through April 2016–2018 (n = 69 collections). On average, catfish constituted 33% of a cormorant's overall diet, which is less than reported in previous studies. There was no statistical difference between consumption of channel (I. punctatus) and hybrid catfish (I. punctatus x I. furcatus) based on biomass estimates, and the greatest consumption of catfish occurred in the months of February and March. The best fit model for predicting catfish consumption was the cubic polynomial function of the area of catfish aquaculture within a 30.6 km forage buffer of a night roost. Our findings will inform wildlife managers about relationships between cormorant night roost locations and consumption of catfish and aid decision making with respect to cormorant management. Despite cormorants having shifted consumption to naturally occurring fish species associated with changes to aquaculture, aquaculture remains an important part of regional food webs.

The American Fisheries Society (AFS) has recommended standard gears and methods for collecting North American freshwater fish data, but selectivity of these gears, including gill nets, is poorly described for most species. We calculated contact selectivity for species commonly collected with AFS standard gill nets in lakes and reservoirs of North America, including Black Bullhead Ameiurus melas, Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, Walleye Sander vitreus, and Yellow Perch Perca flavescens. The normal selectivity curve provided the best fit to empirical catch data for all species. Inclusion of a tangle factor improved model fit for Black Bullhead, Channel Catfish, and Walleye, indicating that tangling is an important means of capture for these species. Species richness and composition of the metazoan parasite communities of 2 ictalurid catfishes (yellow bullhead [Ameiurus natalis] and channel catfish [Ictalurus punctatus]) were compared from within the Big Thicket National Preserve in southeastern Texas, U.S.A., to areas outside the preserve. Ninety-five fishes were sampled from 2009 to 2013 from 6 sites each inside and outside the Preserve, and 31 species of parasites were recovered (27 species from inside and 14 species from outside). Native to the central USA, the Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus and the Flathead Catfish Pylodictis olivaris have been widely introduced into many Atlantic slope rivers and are now found in several drainages of the Chesapeake Bay. Fisheries managers are concerned that these large, long-lived catfish species may be contributing to observed declines in anadromous species, such as the American Shad Alosa sapidissima, Blueback Herring A. aestivalis, and Alewife A. pseudoharengus, all of which once comprised major U.S. fisheries. We assessed spatiotemporal variability and selectivity in the diets of Blue Catfish and Flathead Catfish during the spawning migration of these alosines. Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus were purposefully introduced into freshwater tributaries to Chesapeake Bay in the past, and populations have subsequently spread to new areas, negatively impacting native communities and causing concern for resource managers. To aid development of management strategies, we implemented a multiyear (2012–2015) tagging study of invasive Blue Catfish in a 40-km stretch of the Potomac River to estimate survival and assess movement patterns. Blue Catfish (N = 1,237) were captured by electrofishing and double-tagged to allow us to estimate tag retention rates; we used reward tags to increase reporting rates. Recaptured fish (N = 104; 8.4% return rate) were at large for between 2 and 1,208 d. Tag retention rates were 0.88 (SE = 0.045) after 1 year and declined to 0.31 (SE = 0.107) after 2.7 years. A major focus of ecology is understanding trophic relationships and energy flows in natural systems, associated food web dynamics and changes in food webs due to introduced species. Predator-prey interactions are often assessed by examining stomach contents. However, partially digested remains may be difficult to accurately identify by traditional visual analysis. Here we evaluate the effectiveness of DNA barcoding to identify digested piscine prey remains in invasive Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus, non-native, but established Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus and native White Catfish Ameiurus catus from Chesapeake Bay, USA. Stomach contents were examined and piscine prey items were scored as lightly digested, moderately digested or severely digested. A 652 base pair region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) mitochondrial DNA gene was sequenced for each prey item. Edited barcode sequences were compared to locally-caught and validated reference sequences in BOLD (Barcode of Life Database). A large majority of prey items were sufficiently digested to limit morphological identification (9.4 % to species and an additional 12.1 % to family). However, overall barcoding success was high (90.3 %) with little difference among the digestion classifications. Combining morphological and genetic identifications, we classified 91.6 % of fish prey items to species. Twenty-three fish species were identified, including species undergoing active restoration efforts (e.g., Alosa spp.) and commercially important species, e.g., Striped Bass Morone saxatilis, White Perch Morone americana, American Eel Anguilla rostrata and Menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus. We found DNA barcoding highly successful at identifying all but the most heavily degraded prey items and to be an efficient and effective method for obtaining diet information to strengthen the resolution of trophic analyses including diet comparisons among sympatric native and non-native predators.

Management of Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus and Channel Catfish I. punctatus for trophy production has recently become more common. Typically, trophy management is attempted with length-based regulations that allow for the moderate harvest of small fish but restrict the harvest of larger fish. However, the specific regulations used vary considerably across populations, and no modeling efforts have evaluated their effectiveness. Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are a popular target for Nebraska anglers, and the proportion of Nebraska anglers targeting catfish is consistently 50% or greater on an annual basis. Commercial fishing for channel catfish was legal on the Missouri River, in Nebraska, from the 1800s until 1992. Several studies have been published regarding channel catfish population characteristics in this reach prior to the closure of commercial fishing; however, there have been no long-term assessments done post-closure. There is concern among anglers and managers about numbers and size of channel catfish in the Missouri River and a desire to better understand population dynamics in order to better manage channel catfish stocks. Gill nets are inherently size selective, but selectivity curves can correct this bias. We sampled eight reservoirs with the North American standard gill net to develop a large length-specific data set for six species: Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, hybrid Striped Bass (White Bass Morone chrysops × Striped Bass M. saxatilis), saugeye (Sauger Sander canadensis × Walleye S. vitreus), Walleye, White Bass, and White Crappie Pomoxis annularis. We then used the SELECT (share each lengthclass’s catch total) method to find the best-fit selectivity model to adjust the gill-net catch for contact selectivity. Stocking is the primary fisheries management tool used to enhance fisheries for Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus throughout the United States, but the technique has not been thoroughly evaluated for large reservoirs (e.g., >5,000 ha) and small rivers. We compared angler return rates of catchable-sized fish (316-456 mm TL) stocked in 16 water bodies of three types: large U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) lakes (5,425–18,381 ha), Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) lakes (81–2,716 ha), and small rivers. We tagged and stocked 400–500 fish per water body with standard Carlin dangler reward tags (US$10–$100), and 10 fish per water body were stocked with a $100 high-reward tag to assess nonreporting. A total of 1,210 anglers reported catching 1,964 of the 6,800 fish (29%) stocked with standard tags. Anglers reported catching 82 of the 160 high-reward fish (51%). Acidification has historically impaired Cheat Lake's fish community, but recent mitigation efforts within the Cheat River watershed have improved water quality and species richness. Presently, channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus are abundant and attain desirable sizes for anglers. We evaluated the age, growth, and fall diet of the population. We collected a sample of 155 channel catfish from Cheat Lake from 5 August to 4 December 2014, a subset of which we aged (n = 148) using lapillus otoliths. We fit four growth models (von Bertalanffy, logistic, Gompertz, and power) to length-at-age data and compared models using an information theoretic approach. We collected fall diets from 55 fish sampled from 13 October to 4 December 2014. Total lengths of individuals in the sample ranged from 154 to 721 mm and ages ranged from 2 to 19 y. We AICc-selected the von Bertalanffy growth model as the best approximating model, and the power and Gompertz models also had considerable support. Diets were numerically dominated by Diptera larvae, specifically Chironomidae and Chaoboridae, while 39% of stomachs contained terrestrial food items. This study provides baseline data for management of Cheat Lake's channel catfish population. Further, this study fills a knowledge gap in the scientific literature on channel catfish, because few previously published studies have examined the population ecology of channel catfish in the Central Appalachian region.

Nonnative bigheaded carps are established in the Mississippi River and there is substantial concern about their potential entry into the interconnected Laurentian Great Lakes. While electrical barriers currently exist as a preventative measure, there is need for additional control mechanisms to promote barrier security through redundancy. Species distribution models are useful tools to evaluate habitat relationships of fishes. We used hierarchical Bayesian multispecies mixture models to evaluate the relationships of both detection and abundance with habitat of reservoir fishes caught using tandem hoop nets. A total of 7,212 fish from 12 species were captured, and the majority of the catch was composed of Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus (46%), Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus (25%), and White Crappie Pomoxis annularis (14%). Detection estimates ranged from 8% to 69%, and modeling results suggested that fishes were primarily influenced by reservoir size and context, water clarity and temperature, and land-use types. Ocular diplostomiasis is caused by trematode species in the family Diplostomidae, specifically those in the genera Austrodiplostomum, Diplostomum, and Tylodelphys. Diplostomid trematodes are globally distributed parasites of fish. Heavy infections of diplostomids that parasitize the eyes of fish can result in acute mortality while chronic infections are often characterized by impaired vision or blindness. In the southeastern United States, commercial catfish production is threatened by piscivorous birds and the many trematode species that parasitize them. The life cycles typically involve a piscivorous avian definitive host, a mollusk first intermediate host, and a fish second intermediate host. A survey of parasites infecting the snail host Biomphalaria havanensis (= B. obstructa ) in catfish production ponds was undertaken. Snails were collected from 2 separate ponds during the summer of 2014 and observed for the release of trematode cercariae. A total of 1,740 snails were collected. Three distinct longifurcate pharyngeate cercariae were observed and these cercariae were characterized morphologically and molecularly. Sequencing of ∼4,200 base pairs (bp) of the nuclear ribosomal genes and ∼450 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase gene revealed 3 genetically distinct species. One morphotype shared 99-100% sequence identity with metacercariae from the aqueous and vitreous humors of gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum and channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus as well as an adult trematode, Austrodiplostomum ostrowskiae, a parasite of the double-crested cormorant Nannopterum auritus. The remaining 2 cercariae morphotypes shared 99-100% sequence identity with an unidentified Tylodelphys sp. and Austrodiplostomum sp. metacercaria from the brain and eyes of several freshwater fish. Herein we molecularly link the cercaria, metacercaria, and adult stage of the life cycle of A. ostrowskiae, identifying the snail host for this parasite, in addition to providing notes on 2 cercariae representing 2 other diplostomids.

The Colorado River in Grand Canyon is highly regulated, with hypolimnetic releases that are generally unfavorable for endemic native fishes. However, both long-term drought and changes in dam operations have led to changes in river conditions, including the addition of approximately 125 km of riverine environment due to the contraction of Lake Mead. Through sampling of small-bodied fish, we were able to describe the Grand Canyon fish community and define the current native fish distribution from near Bright Angel Creek downstream to Pearce Ferry. Beginning in 2014 and continuing through 2018, we sampled the fish community via seining and documented a fish community that was dominated (>95%) by native fish through approximately 300 km of river. Nonnative species that were once commonly captured, such as Red Shiner Cyprinella lutrensis, Common Carp Cyprinus carpio, and Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, were rarely encountered in Grand Canyon during this more recent sampling, which makes the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park a rare contemporary example of native fish populations regaining dominance over invasive fishes in the desert southwest.

Somatic growth patterns among animal populations are maintained through complex processes that vary among ecosystems. Changes in growth patterns may be concomitant with changes in climate; however, understanding how growth will manifest among ecosystems is limited. Information embedded within fish hard-parts (i.e., otoliths, spines, vertebrae) can account for variation in growth patterns resulting from changing climate conditions. Channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus is a freshwater fish species widely distributed across North America with limited information regarding climate influences on growth and differences in climate-growth relations among ecological systems. We assessed growth (total length) response to changing climate conditions for channel catfish among three waterbody types—pit lakes, irrigation and power-generation reservoirs, and flood-control reservoirs in Nebraska, USA. We used linear mixed-effect models and an information theoretic approach to assess the relative strengths among competing hypotheses. The most supported linear mixed-effect model of channel catfish growth was a function of fish age and an interaction between waterbody type and growing-degree-day (GDD). A positive trend existed in GDD from 1990 through 2008 whereby the predicted increase in GDD among waterbody types ranged from 182 GDD to 189 GDD. The predicted change in channel catfish growth resulting from increased GDD ranged from 1% to 39% among waterbody types. Channel catfish population rate functions, thus, may not respond similarly to climate conditions across ecosystem types. Changes in climate variables may contribute to system-specific responses in population dynamics for channel catfish as well as other similar freshwater species. The establishment of relations between climate and growth variables for a freshwater generalist with a plastic diet and broad temperature tolerance serves as an indication of the breadth of responses possible for freshwater fishes under global changes in climate conditions.

Interactions occurring between species in multiple invaded freshwater ecosystems are often difficult to observe and study. Studies on invasive alien species typically focus on single species, and, when the species community is exclusively composed of alien species, their interactions, eventual facilitation and hindering processes are very scarcely assessed. To investigate such a community, the species community in the Arno River (Tuscany, Italy) was examined as a model system using the combined approach of stable isotopes and dietary analyses. Established alien species have formed a pyramid shaped community with the European catfish Silurus glanis and the North American channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus in the apex position, followed by opportunistic predatory (Lepomis gibbosus) and omnivore (Alburnus alburnus, Cyprinus carpio, Barbus barbus, Pseudorasbora parva, Padogobius sp., Tinca tinca) species. These species were observed to feed on a variety of primary producers (Myriophyllum sp., Potamogeton sp., Phragmites australis) and consumers (aquatic insects, molluscs, Dikerogammarus villosus, Procambarus clarkii, Palaemon antennarius, tadpoles). Remarkably, the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus showed an ontogenetic niche shift, with juveniles occupying a slightly higher trophic position than mature individuals. Pseudorasbora parva and A. alburnus showed a strong niche overlap, with the former having a wider niche. Such wide niches were also found for the invasive crustaceans D. villosus and P. clarkii. Outgoing from our findings, we suggest that life-history and geographic origin play a role in determining competition and interaction type among alien species, with species from the same geographic area showing a lower potential to compete than species from different areas, hence affecting their potential impact on native species.

Salination of freshwater (FW) bodies has the potential to affect homeostatic regulation of osmotic and volume balance in FW organisms. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important role in volume balance by maintaining blood pressure in marine and seawater acclimated euryhaline fish, but little is known about the RAS in FW adapted fish. The purpose of the present study was to first determine if the FW channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), demonstrates evidence of a functional RAS. Channel catfish (n = 6) were implanted with a catheter in the dorsal aorta to measure dorsal aortic pressure (PDA) and infuse drugs. Infusion of [Asn1,Val5,Asn9]-angiotensin I (ANGI) at 100, 400, and 1000 ng/kg significantly increased PDA in a dose dependent manner (P < 0.05). Pretreatment with 2 mg/kg of the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, Captopril (CAP), essentially eliminated the pressor response to the highest dose of ANGI (P < 0.05). Finally, infusion of 400 ng/kg [Asn1,Val5]-angiotensin II (ANGII) significantly increased PDA from baseline (P < 0.05). The results suggest that channel catfish appear to have an operational RAS and may serve as a suitable model in which to study the role of ANGII in blood pressure regulation in FW adapted fish.

We investigated the effects of a phytogenic feed additive on disease susceptibility to Edwardsiella ictaluri in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus and regulation of 6 rhamnose-binding lectin (RBL) genes. Juvenile catfish (n = 250, 13.4 ± 0.1 g) were allotted to the following treatments: control (floating diet) or EO (floating diet supplemented with essential oils; Digestarom® P.E.P. MGE). The fish were fed their respective diets for 6 wk. Following subjection to different feed treatments, all fish were exposed to pathogenic E. ictaluri by bath immersion. Another group of fish were not challenged (non-challenged controls, fed control feed). Mucosal tissue samples were taken to quantify gene expression levels of RBL on Days 1 and 2 post-challenge. After challenge, survival was higher (64.4 vs. 48.0%) in fish fed EO compared to controls (p < 0.05). Relative to non-challenged controls, gill RBL1a mRNA was higher in fish fed EO (p < 0.05) on Day 1 while gill RBL3b was higher in fish fed EO (p < 0.01) on Days 1 and 2, respectively. RBL5a in the skin and proximate small intestine did not change significantly relative to non-challenged fish on Days 1 and 2 of the disease challenge. Results demonstrate that Digestarom® P.E.P. MGE improved survival of channel catfish challenged with E. ictaluri. One of the mechanisms through which essential oils may improve survival is through upregulation of RBL1a and RBL3b in the gill.

Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus is an important species among anglers in North America. Channel Catfish management strategies vary greatly in the United States and Canada, and there are few examples of regulations aimed at improving size structure in the literature. The goal of this study was to model the response of Channel Catfish to changes in regulations that meet specific management objectives. We modeled a suite of regulations to determine if minimum length limits or a protected slot limit could be used to improve size structure or avoid growth overfishing of Channel Catfish in a large river. River modifications have had detrimental effects on biota that depend on river systems; therefore, information is needed to understand these effects and direct management efforts. Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are important recreationally, commercially, and ecologically in the Middle Mississippi River (MMR), but few studies have examined their habitat requirements, and food habits have not been evaluated in the MMR. Back-calculation of length-at-age from otoliths and spines is a common technique employed in fisheries biology, but few studies have compared the precision of data collected with this method for catfish populations. We compared precision of back-calculated lengths-at-age for an introduced Ictalurus furcatus (Blue Catfish) population among 3 commonly used cross-sectioning techniques. We used gillnets to collect Blue Catfish (n = 153) from Lake Oconee, GA. We estimated ages from a basal recess, articulating process, and otolith cross-section from each fish. We employed the Frasier-Lee method to back-calculate length-at-age for each fish, and compared the precision of back-calculated lengths among techniques using hierarchical linear models. Pugheaded fish exhibit anomalous bone structure, often characterized by a steep, bulging forehead and incomplete closure of the mouth. While the pughead deformity has been observed in many species of fish, thescientific literature contains no documented instances of pugheadedness in Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus. Pugheadedness is rare, particularly in tidal systems, and most recorded instances have been based on single specimens. We captured several pugheaded Blue Catfish (N = 18) in the tidal Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. While Blue Catfish sampling was extensive in the James, Pamunkey, and Mattaponi rivers (N = 4,357 fish at 163 sites), pugheaded specimens were encountered at only six sampling sites within the upper tidal zone of the Rappahannock River, an area known to be susceptible to summertime hypoxia. As part of an effort on scaling of pectoral spines and muscles, the basis for growth was examined in six pectoral muscles in juvenile blue catfish Ictalurus furcatus, the largest catfish in North America. Fibre number increases slowly in fish from 13.0 to 26.4 cm in total length, doubles by 27.0 cm and remains stable in larger individuals. Simultaneously, mean fibre diameter decreases by half, caused by the addition of new small fibres, before increasing non-linearly in larger fish. The orders of magnitude disparity between the size at hatching and the size of large adults may have selected for rapid muscle fibre addition at a threshold size.

Introduced predators pose ecological impacts upon prey species and receiving ecosystems. Understanding such ecological interactions creates technical challenges including species-specific identification of partially digested prey items in the stomachs of piscivorous predators. We present the first evaluation of DNA barcoding to identify piscine prey in the stomachs of North American catfishes (Family Ictaluridae). Fish prey items of non-native Blue Catfish Ictalurus furcatus and Flathead Catfish Pylodictis olivaris were obtained by gastric lavage and ranked as lightly, moderately, or heavily digested. We used an established cocktail of universal fish primers (FishF2_t1, FishR2_t1, VF2_t1, and FR1d_t1) to amplify the cytochrome oxidase I (COI-3) region of mitochondrial DNA from these samples. Amplification products were subjected to Sanger sequencing, and edited sequences were compared to entries in GenBank. Eighty-six percent of the sequences generated for lightly or moderately digested samples and 66 % of those for heavily digested samples could be assigned to the species level based on similarity with archived COI-3 sequences. While traditional morphological identification led to species-level identification of 65 % of fish prey items, addition of DNA barcoding resulted in identification to species of 88 % of fish prey items overall. Diet items identified by DNA markers included anadromous Striped Bass Morone saxatilis and herrings and shads Alosa spp. that are the focus of fishery restoration programs in these rivers. We found DNA barcoding to be an efficient and cost-effective addition to diet studies of non-native predators.

Electrofishing is one of the more commonly used techniques for sampling fish in freshwater ecosystems. In the present study, four native fish species (Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus, Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus, Freshwater Drum Aplodinotus grunniens, and Gizzard Shad Dorosoma cepedianum) and two invasive species (Common Carp Cyprinus carpio and Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) that were captured in the Mississippi and Illinois rivers were assessed for evidence of vertebral injuries from pulsed-DC (PDC) boat electrofishing. Fish were collected by electrofishing crews conducting routine standardized sampling for two long-term monitoring programs. Fifty percent of Silver Carp and 27% of Channel Catfish were injured; no injuries were observed for the other species examined. Injury rates for Silver Carp were 71% in the Illinois River and 30% in the Mississippi River. Harvest regulations are important for fishes that are both commercially and recreationally sought after such as Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) throughout the Middle Mississippi River. Monitoring total harvest and understanding Channel catfish population dynamics (i.e., recruitment, growth, and mortality) are crucial for managing a sustainable population. Total commercial harvest and current harvest regulations in the Middle Mississippi River have not recently been evaluated. Thus, we evaluated total commercial harvest reports from 1945–2012 along with commercial fishing effort, population dynamics for the Middle Mississippi River Channel catfish population, and simulated the effects of various length limits on the reproductive potential and yield per recruit of the Channel catfish population.
