Abstract

Abstract: New collections at the Induan/Olenekian boundary GSSP candidate at Mud (Himachal Pradesh, Northern India) lead to the recognition of several well preserved ammonoid faunas that significantly improve the biostratigraphic resolution in the beds underlying the proposed GSSP level. In ascending order, the new biostratigraphical sequence comprises: the Ambites lilangense beds, the Fuchsites markhami beds, the Kingites lens beds, the Prionolobus rotundatus beds, the Flemingites bhargavai beds, the Kashmiritidae gen. nov. A beds and the Vercherites cf. pulchrum beds. The faunas from Bed 10, located about 1m below the proposed GSSP level, contain certain ammonoids with typical early Smithian affinity (Flemingitidae, Kashmiritidae) and thus reflect the beginning of the early Smithian evolutionary radiation. Seen from an evolutionary point of view, the Dienerian/Smithian boundary can therefore be placed just below Bed 10. Ideally, the stage boundary should also be intercalibrated with other biological, chemical or physical proxies as additional tools for world-wide correlations. Four new species (Flemingites bhargavai, Kingites korni, ?Kingites parkashi and Xenodiscoides variocostatus) and two new genera (Mudiceras, Vercherites) are described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The origin of jaws remains largely an enigma that is best addressed by studying fossil and living jawless vertebrates. Conodonts were eel-shaped jawless animals, whose vertebrate affinity is still disputed. The geometrical analysis of exceptional three-dimensionally preserved clusters of oro-pharyngeal elements of the Early Triassic Novispathodus , imaged using propagation phase-contrast X-ray synchrotron microtomography, suggests the presence of a pulley-shaped lingual cartilage similar to that of extant cyclostomes within the feeding apparatus of euconodonts (“true” conodonts). This would lend strong support to their interpretation as vertebrates and demonstrates that the presence of such cartilage is a plesiomorphic condition of crown vertebrates.

Abstract

Sun et al . (Reports, 19 October 2012, p. 366) reconstructed Permian to Middle Triassic equatorial seawater temperatures. After correct temporal positioning of their data points, their presumed trends of temperature changes, and hence their assumption of a one-to-one relationship between putative "lethally hot" seawater temperatures and a disputable equatorial "eclipse" of some organisms, are no longer supported by their data.
