Ethnopharmacological Relevance: According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, Graves' disease (GD) is called 'Ying Bing', which is a kind of goiter. Haizao Yuhu decoction, originated from the medical book of the Ming Dynasty 'Waikezhengzong', is a classic Chinese herbal formula for the treatment of 'Ying Bing' for more than 400 years. Pingkang granules, modified from the Chinese herbal formula Haizao Yuhu decoction specialized in GD, has shown effectiveness in several single-centre studies. However, high-quality clinical evidence for the management of GD using Pingkang granules remains insufficient., Aim of the Study: To obtain high-quality medical evidence for the treatment of GD with Pingkang granules through randomized controlled clinical trial., Materials and Methods: A multicentre, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial was designed. A total of 186 patients with Graves' hyperthyroidism from five medical centers were randomly assigned to receive methimazole [MMI] and Pingkang granules placebo (group A), MMI and Pingkang granules (group B), or MMI placebo and Pingkang granules (group C) in a 1:1:1 ratio for 12 weeks. The primary clinical outcomes were serum free triiodothyronine (FT 3 ) and free thyroxine (FT 4 ) levels from baseline until the end of the research. Secondary clinical outcomes included serum thyrotrophin receptor antibody (TRAb) levels at 4- and 12-weeks post-intervention, thyroid volume, peak systolic velocity of the superior thyroid artery (STA-PSV), 39-item version of Thyroid-Related Patient-Reported Outcome (ThyPRO39) scores, and safety assessment included blood routine, liver and kidney function tests from baseline to the endpoint., Results: 150 patients were included in the full analysis set for efficacy analysis, including 48, 50, and 52 in groups A, B, and C, respectively. At the endpoint, three regimens significantly reduced serum FT 3 levels (group A, p=0.0027; group B, p < 0.0001; group C, p=0.0028) and FT 4 levels (group A, p < 0.0001; group B, p < 0.0001; group C, p < 0.0001), and the combination of MMI and Pingkang granules markedly reduced serum TRAb levels (p = 0.0014). The thyroid volume in group A was significantly larger than that at baseline at week 12 (p=0.0370), and there were no statistically significant differences in the thyroid volume among groups at week 4 (p=0.7485) and 12 (p=0.1333). STA-PSV values in group B were significantly higher than those in group A at week 4 (p=0.0409). The STA-PSV levels in groups A (p < 0.0001) and C (p=0.0025) were significantly lower than those at baseline at week 4, and STA-PSV levels in all groups were significantly lower than those at baseline at week 12 (group A, p=0.0095; group B, p=0.0138; group C, p=0.0423). Pingkang granule monotherapy significantly ameliorated symptoms related to hyperthyroidism (p < 0.0001), eye (p=0.0490), tiredness (p < 0.0001), cognition (p < 0.0001), depression (p=0.0478), and susceptibility (p=0.0052). Background: Shengmai San (SMS) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula used for supplementing Qi and Yin and can mitigate symptoms related to malignant arrhythmia and heart failure. This systematic review aimed at exploring the effectiveness and safety of SMS for viral myocarditis (VMC). Methods: Eight databases from their inception to June 2023 were searched to identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on SMS for VMC. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was used to assess methodological quality. Mean difference (MD), standardized mean difference (SMD), and risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated and input into the meta-analysis using RevMan 5.4. Results: Forty-four RCTs were included involving 4298 participants. The interventions included 29 types of modified SMS decoctions and 15 patent medicines. Overall study quality was low. Compared with western medicine (WM), SMS was associated with higher recovery rate from palpitations (RR 2.3, 95% CI 1.59, 3.33, 2 RCTs, n = 89), chest pain (RR 1.57, 95% CI [1.17, 2.09], 2 RCTs, n = 89), and lower cTnI (MD -0.82 ng/ml, 95% CI -0.98, -0.66, 1 RCT, n = 60). SMS plus WM was more effective than WM in palpitation recovery rate (RR 1.52, 95% CI 1.21, 1.92, 3 RCTs, n = 136), dyspnea recovery rate (RR 1.47, 95% CI 1.12, 1.94, 3 RCT, n = 267), ECG (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.32, 1.55, 20 RCT, n = 2035), CK-MB (MD -6.36, 95% CI -8.43, -4.28, 8 RCT, n = 946), and cTnI (MD -0.06, 95% CI -0.06, -0.05, 3 RCT, n = 307). No serious adverse events were reported using SMS alone or in combination with WM. Conclusion: SMS used alone or combined with WM may have potential effectiveness on symptom alleviation, ECG recovery rate, myocardial injury markers, and cardiac function, but the effectiveness is uncertain due to the low quality and absence of placebo-controlled trials. Sulforaphane (SFN) has attracted much attention due to its ability on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, while its functional targets and underlying mechanism of action on brain injury caused by acute carbon monoxide poisoning (ACOP) have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we used a systematic network pharmacology approach to explore the mechanism of SFN in the treatment of brain damage after ACOP. In this study, the results of network pharmacology demonstrated that there were a total of 81 effective target genes of SFN and 36 drug-disease targets, which were strongly in connection with autophagy-animal signaling pathway, drug metabolism, and transcription disorders in cancer. Upon the further biological function and KEGG signaling pathway enrichment analysis, a large number of them were involved in neuronal death, reactive oxygen metabolic processes and immune functions. Moreover, based on the results of bioinformatics prediction associated with multiple potential targets and pathways, the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway was selected to elucidate the molecular mechanism of SFN in the treatment of brain injury caused by ACOP. The following molecular docking analysis also confirmed that SFN can bind to AMPKα well through chemical bonds. In addition, an animal model of ACOP was established by exposure to carbon monoxide in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to verify the predicted results of network pharmacology. We found that the mitochondrial ultrastructure of neurons in rats with ACOP was seriously damaged, and apoptotic cells increased significantly. The histopathological changes were obviously alleviated, apoptosis of cortical neurons was inhibited, and the number of Nissl bodies was increased in the SFN group as compared with the ACOP group (p < .05). Besides, the administration of SFN could increase the expressions of phosphorylated P-AMPK and MFN2 proteins and decrease the levels of DRP1, Caspase3, and Casapase9 proteins in the brain tissue of ACOP rats. These findings suggest that network pharmacology is a useful tool for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) research, SFN can effectively inhibit apoptosis, protect cortical neurons from the toxicity of carbon monoxide through activating the AMPK pathway and may become a potential therapeutic strategy for brain injury after ACOP., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

A method based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole linear ion trap-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-QTRAP-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous determination of 41 bioactive constituents of flavonoids, organic acids, nucleosides, and amino acids in Lysimachiae Herba. The content of multiple bioactive constituents was compared among the samples from different habitats. The chromatographic separation was performed in a Waters XBridge®C&#95;(18) column(4.6 mm×100 mm, 3.5 μm) at 30 ℃. The gradient elution was performed with 0.4% methanol(A)-formic acid water(B) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8 mL·min~(-1), and the multiple-reaction monitoring(MRM) mode was adopted. According to the content of 41 constituents, hierarchical cluster analysis(HCA), orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA), and gray relational analysis(GRA) were perfomed to comprehensively evaluate the samples from different habitats. The results showed that the 41 constituents exhibited good linear relationship within the tested concentration ranges, with the correlation coefficients(r) greater than 0.999 4. The method featured good precision, repeatability, and stability with the relative standard deviations(RSDs) less than 5.0%. The average recoveries of the 41 constituents ranged from 98.06% to 101.9%, with the RSDs of 0.62%-4.6%. HCA and OPLS-DA separated 48 batches of Lysimachiae Herba samples from different habitats into three categories: the producing areas in Sichuan and Chongqing, the producing areas in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi, and the producing areas in Guizhou. The content of 41 constituents varied among the Lysimachiae Herba samples from different habitats. The GRA results revealed that the Lysimachiae Herba sample from Nanchong City, Sichuan Province had the best comprehensive quality. The method developed in this study was accurate and reliable and thus can be used for comprehensive evaluation of Lysimachiae Herba quality and provide basic information for the selection of habitats.

To explore the color value changes after processing and further explore the correlations between color values and internal components, we established a rapid evaluation method for the quality of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle. In this study, the color values of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle were digitized by a spectrophotometer, and the standard ranges of color values of the two herbal medicines were established. Further, a discriminant analysis model was established to quickly and accurately distinguish the two herbal medicines. The content of 9 flavonoids and 1 triterpene in Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle were determined by HPLC, and Pearson correlation analysis was adopted to analyze the correlations between the color values and the content of 10 components. The standard ranges of L~*, a~*, and b~* values were 65.539 6-68.305 8, 7.296 3-8.467 3, and 29.998 8-32.212 8 for Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, and 43.654 3-47.166 4, 14.050 0-15.133 8, and 16.424 6-20.984 8 for Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle, respectively. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma had higher L~* and b~* values and lower a~* value than Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle, which indicated that processing with honey decreased the white and yellow values and increased the red value. The original and cross validation of the established discriminant analysis model met the requirements, and the external validation of the model showed the prediction accuracy of 100%. Pearson correlation analysis showed that the a~* value was positively correlated with the content of liquiritin apioside and isoliquiritin apioside(P&lt;0.05), while the L~* and b~* values were negatively correlated with the content of the above two components(P&lt;0.05). After processing with honey, L~* and b~* decreased while a~* increased, and the content of liquiritin apioside and isoliquiritin apioside increased, which was consistent with the content determination results. This study reveals the regularity of the color values of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma after processing with honey roasting, as well as the correlations between color values and component content, which provides a basis for the rapid quality evaluation of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata Cum Melle.

Taxilli Herba (TAXH) is an important traditional Chinese medicine with a long history, dating from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the present times. However, the active constituents in it that parasitize different hosts vary, affecting its clinical efficacy. Given the complexity of the host origins, evaluating the quality of TAXH is critical to ensure the safety and effectiveness of clinical medication. In the present study, a quantitative method based on ultra-fast liquid chromatography tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UFLC-QTRAP-MS/MS) was established, which simultaneously determined the content of 33 active constituents, including 12 flavonoids, 4 organic acids, 12 amino acids, and 5 nucleosides in 45 samples. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was employed to classify and distinguish between TAXH and its adulterants, Tolypanthi Herba (TOLH). A hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) was conducted combined with a heatmap to visually observe the distribution regularity of 33 constituents in each sample. Furthermore, gray relational analysis (GRA) was applied to evaluate the quality of samples to get the optimal host. The results demonstrated that TAXH excelled TOLH in quality as a whole. The quality of TAXH parasitizing Morus alba was also better, while those that were parasitic on Cinnamomum camphora and Glyptostrobus pensilis had relatively poor quality. This study may provide comprehensive information that is necessary for quality control and supply a scientific basis for further exploring the quality formation mechanism of TAXH.

Background: Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN) is listed as the most common secondary glomerular diseases among children. Approximately 15 to 20% of children eventually could develop into chronic renal failure. Chinese patent herbal medicine Huaiqihuang (HQH) has been widely used in children with HSPN. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of HQH for HSPN in children, so as to provide evidence for clinical use., Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on HQH for HSPN in children were searched in eight Chinese and English databases from their inception to December 2020. We included children with HSPN received HQH combined with conventional medicine. Cochrane "Risk of bias" tool was used to assess methodological quality, and "Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach" to summarize the certainty of evidence for main findings. Effect estimates were presented as risk ratio (RR), mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) in meta-analyses using RevMan 5.3. Data not suitable for statistical pooling were synthesized qualitatively., Results: In total seven RCTs were identified. Compared with conventional medicine alone, HQH plus conventional medicine showed the better effect in improving clinical cure rate (RR 1.58; 95%CI 1.17 to 2.14; n = 6) and total effective rate (RR 1.34; 1.16 to 1.54; n = 6); reducing urine sediment erythrocyte count (MD -9.23; - 10.76 to - 7.69; n = 3) and urine β2 micro-globulin level (MD -0.09; - 0.12 to - 0.06; n = 2). No serious adverse event was recorded in all included trials., Conclusions: Limited evidence showed HQH combined with conventional medicine had a beneficial effect for children with HSPN, and the side effects were mild. HQH may be a promising complementary therapy. However, long term follow-up, high quality and multicenter RCTs are required to confirm the findings., (© 2021. The Author(s).)

Objective: To explore the potential targets and synergistic mechanisms of Kushen Decoction for the treatment of cryptosporidiosis using network pharmacology and molecular docking methods., Methods: The main active ingredients of Kushen Decoction were captured from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database and Analysis Platform (TC-MSP) and the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) database, and the potential targets were predicted. In addition, the active ingredients of Kushen Decoction that were not included in the TCMSP database were retrieved in CNKI, WanFang Data, CBM, PubMed and Web of Science databases, and the target genes of all supplemented active ingredients were predicted using the online TargetNet database. Network construction and analysis were performed using the Cytoscape software, and cryptosporidiosis-related targets were retrieved in the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database and GeneCards database. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was created using the STRING database, and the DAVID database was used for GO enrichment and KEGG pathway analyses. The tissue distribution of key targets was investigated using the BioGPS database, and the AutoDockTools software was employed to verify the molecular docking results., Results: A total of 38 active ingredients of Kushen Decoction were screened, and the core ingredients included quercetin, (+)-14α-hydroxymatrine and apigenin. A total of 831 targets of Kushen Decoction and 512 cryptosporidiosis-related targets were predicted, and PPI network analysis revealed 69 key targets, including AKT1, TNF and IL-6. There were 303 biological processes, 46 molecular functions and 29 cellular components involved in the treatment of cryptosporidiosis with Kushen Decoction, and 13 KEGG pathways played a therapeutic role in the synergistic mechanisms of multiple targets, such as Toll-like receptor (TLR), nuclear factor kappa B(NF)-κB, nucleotide binding oligomerization domain like receptor (NLR) signal pathways. The core targets were mainly distributed in the hematologic and immune systems. Molecular docking analysis showed that the binding energy between active ingredients and key targets were all less than 0 kJ/mol, indicating the strong binding of ligands to receptors., Conclusions: The active ingredients of Kushen Decoction, such as quercetin, (+)-14α-hydroxymatrine and apigenin, may act on targets like AKT1, TNF, IL-6 to modulate TLR, NLR and NF-κB signaling pathways to play a synergistic role in the treatment of cryptosporidiosis in the hematologic and immune system.

Andrographis Herba is a commonly used plant medicine, and has been recorded in pharmacopeias of different countries. However, there are some differences in the quality standards. Based on this, this paper compare the quality standards of Andrographis Herba between Chinese Pharmacopoeia, Hong Kong Chinese Materia Medica Standards, United States Pharmacopoeia, European Pharmacopoeia and Indian Pharmacopoeia, including origin, botanical characteristics, identification(microscopic identification and chromatographic identification), content determination, specific test(such as impurities, loss on drying, extractives, pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins, and other items) and storage requirements, so as to provide a reference for studying international quality standards of Andrographis.

Asthma, the most common chronic respiratory disease in the world, is involved in a sustained inflammatory response caused by a variety of immune cells. Ephedra with multi-target, multi-pathway functions is an effective treatment for asthma. However, the ingredients and anti-inflammatory targets of ephedra in treating asthma are unclear. Therefore, there is a need for further research. Ephedra-related and anti-inflammatory targets were found and then combined to get intersection, which represented potential anti-inflammatory targets of ephedra. Moreover, compound-anti-inflammatory target and asthma-target protein-protein interaction network were merged to get the protein-protein interaction network intersection and core genes in asthma-target protein-protein interaction network. For the anti-inflammatory targets of ephedra in treating asthma, Gene Ontology and pathway analysis were executed to confirm gene functions of ephedra in antagonizing inflammation of asthma. Finally, molecular docking, qRT-PCR, WB and ELISA were performed to assess the binding activities between the compounds and anti-inflammatory targets of ephedra in treating asthma. Critical compounds and anti-inflammatory targets of ephedra in treating asthma were identified, including quercetin, luteolin, kempferol, naringenin, beta-sitosterol, SELE, IL-2 and CXCL10. The biological processes of anti-inflammatory targets of ephedra in treating asthma were involved in immune response, inflammatory response, cell-cell signaling and response to lipopolysaccharide. Molecular biology is a new subject that clarifies the phenomena and nature of life at the molecular level. Its development provides new biotechnology and methods for the study of traditional pharmacognosy. The formation of molecular biology has brought the development of pharmacognosy into a new era of gene research. Lonicerae Japonicae Flos is a classical Chinese medicine. Many scholars of home and abroad have carried out relevant studies on its molecular biology on the basis of the in-depth study with traditional methods, and have achieved certain results. In order to provide references on the method, technical for promoting the modernization of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, and the development, protection, and utilization of other traditional Chinese medicine resources. This article summarized the application status of molecular biology methods and techniques on the identification, biosynthesis of active constituents, and molecular mechanism of secondary metabolite under stress conditions of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos in recent years. In hybridization technology of tag(RFLP), molecular markers based on PCR(RAPD, AFLP, SSR and ISSR), based on DNA sequence analysis of SNP and DNA barcode for the variety identification, diagnosis, identification of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos, and so forth in detail. At the same time, it is proposed that multi-omics technology can be used to build systems biology technology and platforms, and establish related models of secondary metabolite biosynthesis, so as to deepen acknowledge the molecular mechanism of the active component biosynthesis of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and the accumulation of metabolites, life activities of other medicinal plants under adverse environment, then to regulate them.

Leonurus japonicus Houtt, a Chinese traditional herbal medicine, has been widely used to cure gynecological diseases, such as incomplete abortion and menoxenia. Leonurine, a major active alkaloid compound only be found in Leonurus japonicus Houtt, has been successfully extracted and purified. Recent evidence has shown that leonurine can regulate a variety of pathologic processes including oxidative stress, inflammation, fibrosis, apoptosis, and multiple metabolic disorders. Here, we have reviewed the pharmacological actions and biological functions of leonurine, with a focus on the role of leonurine in the amelioration of various pathological processes. Insights into the related signaling pathways and molecular mechanisms have strengthened our understanding on the function of leonurine in the alleviation of multiple pathological states. Our summary of the existing researches should help direct future research into the basic science and clinical applications in related diseases.

At present,the production equipment and process of Chinese patent medicines still have many problems including high energy consumption,low efficiency,high pollution,and low intelligence,which seriously hinder the transformation,upgrading and modernized development of traditional Chinese medicine industry. With the emergence of various new pharmaceutical technologies and the application of technologies of other fields in traditional Chinese medicine industry,the development of Chinese patent medicine has ushered in new opportunities. The processes such as pulverization,mixing,extraction,separation,concentration,drying and sterilization are unique for the production of Chinese patent medicine. These main features can be distinguished from the manufacturing process of chemical drugs,determining the characteristics of the production process and equipment of Chinese patent medicine. In this paper,each operation unit was mentioned to summarize and analyze the new equipment and new technologies with advantages and characteristics in recent years from the perspectives of definition,principle,classification and application. Among them,the automatic spray device of the mixer,the extraction and separation equipment of volatile oil,and the crane basket-type circulation extraction technology,composite multi-layer spiral vibration countercurrent drying,and vibration sterilization equipment all have rapid development in recent years,with great prospects in the production of Chinese patent medicines. In this paper,we also analyzed some problems existing in the production equipment and technology of Chinese patent medicine and the key factors restricting the development of Chinese patent medicine,discussed the transformation of Chinese patent medicine production from traditional to modern and from semi-automatic to intelligent,and put forward three suggestions to help Chinese patent medicine achieve the goal of improving quality,efficiency and green manufacturing in production.

Objectives: To introduce a conceptualized visual error matrix tool to overview the validity of evidence by taking Radix Sophorae flavescentis for chronic hepatitis B as an example and to propose recommendations for improving clinical trial design and evidence quality. Methods: The randomized clinical trials and reviews were collected during the conduct of a Cochrane systematic review. The authors used a visual error matrix tool to overview the evidence validity by looking at systematic, random, and design error risks. Systematic errors were measured by the type of evidence. Random errors were expressed by the standard error (SE). Design errors were assessed on the priority of outcome measures and the adequacy of nine design components. Three-dimensional error matrix on benefits and harms were then constructed. Results: The authors included 6 meta-analyses and 28 randomized clinical trials. In terms of systematic errors, all reviews were at critically low quality, and all included randomized trials were assessed at high risk of bias. On this systematic error level, they found that there was substantial risk of random errors regarding all-cause mortality (SE 0.36), moderate risk regarding serious adverse events (SE 0.22), substantial risk regarding nonserious adverse events (SE 0.35), and small to moderate risk regarding surrogate outcomes such as detectable hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg) and detectable hepatitis B virus (HBV)-DNA (SE 0.16 and 0.21). No study reported results on quality of life, hepatitis B-related mortality, and morbidity. The design error risks were mainly misuse of outcomes (14/34), inadequate selection of participants (5/34), inadequate description of intervention (11/34) and control (9/34), single-center setting (33/34), and unclear study objective regarding superiority, equivalence, or noninferiority. Conclusion: The current evidence on Radix S. flavescentis for chronic hepatitis B showed high risks of systematic errors, moderate or high risks of random errors, and high risks of design errors. These findings suggest that more randomized trials at minimum risks of all three errors are needed to assess the benefits and harms of Radix S. flavescentis for chronic hepatitis B. The visual error matrix tool provides an overview of the reliability of evidence and may assist in design and conduct of future randomized trials.

The randomized controlled trials about modified Sangbaipi Decoction in the treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease( AECOPD) patients were collected from 7 databases( PubMed,CNKI,et al) from the establishment to December 5,2018. All the studies searched were strictly evaluated. Literatures were independently screened by two researchers according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,and the methodological quality of included studies was evaluated. To systematically review the efficacy of modified Sangbaipi Decoction in treating AECOPD,the Meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis were conducted by using Stata/SE 14. 0 and TSA 0. 9. 5. 10 Beta,respectively. A total of 25 RCTs involving 1 784 patients were included. According to the results of Meta-analysis,compared with the control groups,the trial group had a higher clinical efficacy in AECOPD patients( RR =1. 18,95%CI[1. 13,1. 22],P = 0),improved pulmonary functions including forced expiratory volume in one second( FEV1,WMD =0. 44,95%CI[0. 01,0. 87],P = 0. 046),and the forced vital capacity( FVC,WMD = 0. 42,95%CI[0. 07,0. 22],P = 0),but no statistical significance in the percentage of forced expiratory volume in one second( FEV1%,P = 0. 067) and the first seconds breathing volume percentage of forced vital capacity( FEV1/FVC,P = 0. 238); it improved the arterial oxygen partial pressure( PaO2,SMD =0. 85,95%CI[0. 41,1. 30],P = 0) and decreased the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide( PaCO2,SMD =-0. 94,95% CI[-1. 70,-0. 18],P= 0. 016); and in terms of inflammatory markers,it improved the white blood cell count( WBC,WMD=-0. 94,95%CI[-1. 17,-0. 70],P = 0). The trial sequential analysis showed that the studies included with the improvement of clinical efficacy had passed the conventional and TSA threshold,so as to further confirm the evidence. According to the findings,in addition to conventional Western medicine treatment,modified Sangbaipi Decoction could improve the efficiency in treating acute exacerbation patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,increase PaO2,and decrease PaCO2,with a high safety but no effect on pulmonary function. However,restricted by the low quality of studies included,this conclusion shall be further verified by more high-quality clinical trials.

The intestinal absorption characteristics of ten iridoid glycosides and phenolic acids in the Pterocephali Herba were evaluated via rat intestinal valgus model. The intestinal sac fluids at different time after administration of high,medium and low concentrations of Pterocephali Herba extract were collected and ten chemical components in fluid samples were detected by UPLC-PDA. Accumulative absorbed doses( Q) and absorption rate constants( Ka) of ten chemical constituents were calculated,while proportions between Pterocephali Herba extract and intestinal absorption liquid were compared. The results showed that the intestinal absorption of 10 chemical components was linear absorption( R2>0. 9) at different concentrations,which accorded with the zero-order absorption rate. The absorption rate constant was related to the concentration of the drug and the intestinal site,which indicated that intestinal adsorption mechanism of the components were passive diffusion and active transport. Proportions of chemical constituents in intestinal sac fluid were different from those in Pterocephali Herba extract. Therefore,those ten chemical components in Pterocephali Herba extract can be absorbed in whole intestine. Everted intestinal sac model can be used to evaluate intestinal absorption characteristics of ingredients in Pterocephali Herba extract effectively.

"Qi medicinal herbs" in China refers to a kind of regional national folk herbs related to the treatment of five labors and seven injuries,the last word of which is "Qi". Our study is to sort out and standardize the name and basic confused varieties through the establishment of " Qi medicinal herbs" VFP information database. " Qi medicinal herbs" variety sorting model of " literature research-variety survey-data mining-spatial distribution" was developed by means of literature analysis which the names and varieties of " Qi medicinal herbs" in the literature were summarized and sorted out. The relationship between the distribution of " Qi medicinal herbs" resources and the use of ethnic groups were visualized by Cytoscape 2. 8. 0 software. The information database of " Qi medicinal herbs" involved in 230 kinds of medicinal materials which including 211 species of plants( including varieties) from 66 families. Medicinal materials standard in China have 9 kinds of " Qi medicinal herbs". Among them,there are 31 kinds of " Qi medicinal herbs" with the confusion of " the different names of the same" and " the different substance of the same names". The most used ethnic groups are Tujia,Qiang and Miao. The main efficacy is clearing heat and detoxification,dispelling wind and removing dampness,etc.,and the main treatment is for injury,rheumatic arthralgia and so on. Names and varieties of " Qi medicinal herbs" among Chinese ethnic groups and folk are standardized and sorted out,which is served to promotethe " Qi medicinal herbs" reasonable protection and utilization of resources,and provide effective reference for exploring the information technology and geographical distribution of ethnic medicine and standardizing clinical medication.

A total of 22 RCTs involving 2 012 patients were included. The results of Meta-analysis suggested that: as compared with the control group,the clinical symptoms in AECOPD patients were improved( RR = 1. 19,95%CI[1. 15,1. 24],P = 0); the pulmonary functions including forced expiratory volume in one second( FEV&#95;1)( SMD= 0. 96,95%CI[0. 39,1. 52],P= 0. 001),the percentage of forced expiratory volume in one second( FEV&#95;1%)( SMD =0. 80,95%CI[0. 20,1. 41],P = 0. 009),forced vital capacity( FVC)( SMD = 0. 69,95% CI[0. 06,1. 31],P = 0. 032),first seconds breathing volume percentage of forced vital capacity( FEV&#95;1/FVC) were improved( SMD = 0. 81,95%CI[0. 64,0. 97],P = 0);the arterial oxygen partial pressure( PaO&#95;2) was improved( SMD= 0. 87,95%CI[0. 41,1. 32],P= 0); the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide( PaCO&#95;2) was decreased( SMD =-0. 91,95%CI[-1. 33,-0. 49],P = 0) in the trial group. In addition,the incidence of adverse reactions in the experimental group was low,and there were no serious adverse events. The trial sequential analysis( TSA) showed that the studies included in the improvement of clinical efficacy had passed the conventional and TSA threshold at the same time,further confirming the efficacy of trial group. This research showed that,conventional Western medicine treatment,combined with modified Sanzi Yangqin Decoction in treating acute exacerbation patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease could improve the clinical efficiency and pulmonary functions,improve the PaO&#95;2,decrease the PaCO&#95;2,with a high safety. However,the quality of existing research is low,requiring more high quality clinical trials for further validation.

Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of the Chinese medicine Dingkun Pill (, DKP) on insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)., Methods: A total of 117 women with PCOS were randomly assigned to Group A (38 women), Group B (40 women), or Group C (39 women) in a randomization sequence with SAS software and a 1:1:1 allocation ratio using random block sizes of 6, and were given 7 g of oral DKP daily (Group A), 1 tablet of Diane-35 orally daily (Group B), or 7 g of oral DKP daily plus 1 tablet of Diane-35 orally daily (Group C). Patients took all drugs cyclically for 21 consecutive days, followed by 7 drug-free days. The treatment course for the 3 groups was continued for 3 consecutive months. Oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) were performed before treatment and again after 2 and 3 months of therapy, respectively, and homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) were calculated., Results: Of 117 women with PCOS, 110 completed the entire course of therapy: 35 in Group A, 36 in Group B, and 39 in Group C. After treatment, all three groups showed significant decreases in fasting glucose: at 1 h glucose decreased significantly in Group A (by 0.5 ± 1.4 mmol/L, P=0.028) and Group C (by 0.5 ± 1.2 mmol/L, P=0.045); while showing a tendency to increase in Group B (by 0.4 ± 1.9 mmol/L, P=0.238). HOMA-IR decreased significantly in Group C [by 0.5 (-2.2 to 0.5) mIU mmol/L 2 , P=0.034]. QUICKI was significantly increased in Groups A and C (by 0.009 ± 0.02, P=0.033 and by 0.009 ± 0.027, P=0.049, respectively), while no change was observed in Group B. Repeated-measure ANOVA showed that the absolute changes in all parameters (except for glucose at 1 h), including glucose and insulin levels at all time-points during OGTT and in HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and QUICKI, were not significantly different among the 3 groups after treatment (P>0.05)., Conclusion: DKP or DKP combined with Diane-35 produce a slight improvement in insulin sensitivity compared with Diane-35 alone in PCOS patients (Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03264638).

An analytical method based on UFLC-QTRAP-MS/MS was established for simultaneous determination of thirty-three components including steroidal saponins, homoisoflavonoids, amino acids and nucleosides in Ophiopogonis Radix. Thirty-three target components of commercial medicinal materials of Maidong were comparative analysis. Synergi™ Hydro-RP 100 column (2.0 mm × 100 mm, 2.5 μm) was used with 0.1% formic acid solution-0.1% formic acid acetonitrile for gradient elution at a flow rate of 0.4 mL·min⁻¹. In addition, multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was employed. The data were comprehensively processed and analyzed with hierarchical clustering analysis(HCA), principal component analysis(PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA) methods. All components showed good linearity( r >0.999 0) within the tested ranges. The average recoveries were between 96.23%-102.0%, and the relative standard deviation(RSD) were less than 5%. The results showed that there were significant differences in components between Ophiopogonis Radix and Liriopes Radix, with seven components obviously different. Dao-di herbs have been recognized as "quality models" with a firmly stable status. The formation of Dao-di herbs quality is involved from the genetic inheritance on the molecular level to the metabolic phenotype of final products, and the full material-based biosynthetic pathway remains unknown. In recent years, an increasing variety of omics technologies has provided new methods and ideas for the analysis of complex life systems and are suitable for explanation of quality formation in Dao-di herbs as well. In order to alleviate the scarcity of natural resources and offer scientific guidance of transplanting varieties, achievements of omics in the aspects of Dao-di herbs from genetics to phenotyping, the biosynthetic pathway of secondary metabolites, the interaction with human body and the new methods of quality evaluation have been summarized. Background: Sepsis is a clinically critical disease. However, it is still controversial whether the combined use of traditional Chinese medicine Xuebijing injections (XBJI) and western medicine can enhance curative efficacy and ensure safety compared with western medicine alone. Thus, this research consisted of a systematic review of the curative efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine XBJI combined with ulinastatin for treating sepsis in the Chinese population., Methods: A total of 8 databases were retrieved: 4 foreign databases, namely, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science; and 4 Chinese databases, namely, Sino Med, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP, and Wangfang Data. The time span of retrieval began from the establishment of each database and ended on August 1, 2017. Published randomized controlled trials about the combined use of traditional Chinese medicine XBJI and western medicine were included, regardless of language. Stata12.0 software was used for statistical analysis., Results: Finally, 16 papers involving 1335 cases were included. The result of meta-analysis showed that compared with the single use of ulinastatin, traditional Chinese medicine XBJI combined with ulinastatin could reduce the time of mechanical ventilation, shorten the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, improve the 28-day survival rate, and decrease the occurrence rate of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, case fatality rate, procalcitonin (PCT) content, APACKEII score, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α level, and interleukin (IL)-6 level., Conclusion: On the basis of the common basic therapeutic regimen, the combined use of traditional Chinese medicine XBJI and ulinastatin was compared with the use of ulinastatin alone for treating sepsis in the Chinese population. It was found that the number of adverse events of combination therapy is not significantly increased, and its clinical safety is well within the permitted range. However, considering the limitations of this conclusion due to the low-quality articles included in the present research, it is necessary to conduct high-quality randomized controlled trials.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Bu Shen Yi Sui capsule (BSYSC), based on traditional Chinese formula Liu Wei Di Huang pill, is effective for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) in clinical experience and trials. Our previous studies confirmed that BSYSC had the neuroprotective effect in MS and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE); however, its mechanism of action was not clear. Thus, the effect of BSYSC on remyelination and the underlying mechanisms were investigated in the EAE mice., Materials and Methods: The EAE model was established by injecting subcutaneously myelin oligodendrocyte protein (MOG) 35-55 in mice. Mice were treated with BSYSC (3.02 g/kg) or vehicle daily by oral gavage for 40 days. The body weight and clinical score of mice were evaluated. Brain was observed by magnetic resonance imaging. The inflammation infiltrate of brain and spinal cord was determined by hematoxylin-eosin staining, while the structure of myelin sheath was visualized by transmission electron microscopy on days 23 and 40 post immunization (dpi), respectively. The protein and mRNA levels of platelets-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) α and 2', 3'-cyclic nucleotide-3'-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) were measured by immunohistochemistry, western blot and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The protein expressions of semaphorins (Sema) 3A, Neuropilin (NRP) - 1, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), LIF receptor (LIFR) and Nkx6.2 were further investigated by western blot., Results: BSYSC treatment improved the body weight and clinical score of EAE mice, alleviated inflammatory infiltration and nerve fiber injuries. It also protected the ultrastructural integrity of myelin sheath. BSYSC significantly increased expressions of PDGFRα and CNPase in mice with EAE on 40 dpi. Furthermore, BSYSC treatment increased the expressions of LIF, LIFR and Nkx6.2 and reduced Sema3A and NRP-1 in EAE mice on 40 dpi., Conclusions: The data demonstrated that BSYSC exhibited the neuroprotective effect against EAE by promoting oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) proliferation and differentiation, thus facilitating remyelination. An analytical method based on UFLC-QTRAP-MS/MS was developed for simultaneous determination of fifteen components including eleven lignans (schizantherin B, schisandrol B, schizandrin C, γ-schisandrin, deoxyschizandrin, schisantherin, schisandrin, schisanhenol, gomisin D, gomisin J, and angeloylgomisin H) and organic acids (S)-malic acid, D(-)-tartaric acid, protocatechuic acid, and quinic acid) in Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus. Samples from different product specifications were evaluated and analyzed. The chromatographic separation was performed on a Synergi™ Hydro-RP 100Å column (2.0 mm×100 mm, 2.5 μm) at 40 °C with a gradient elution by employing 0.1% aqueous formic acid (A)-acetonitrile (B) as the mobile phase, and the flow rate was 0.4 mL·min⁻¹, using an electrospray ionization (ESI) source and multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Fifteen components were evaluated synthetically by TOPSIS and gray related degree. The results showed that fifteen components had good linearity (r>0.999 90), and the limits of detection were all satisfactory. The average recoveries of standard addition for the compounds were between 95.42 % and 98.86 %, and the relative standard deviations were less than 5%. The greatest difference of ri in grey related degree was 58.1%, whilst the greatest difference of Ci value in TOPSIS method was 94.8%. The results of these two methods showed that the holistic quality of No. 14 sample was the best. A near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) approach was established for quality control of the alcohol precipitation liquid in the manufacture of Codonopsis Radix. By applying NIRS with multivariate analysis, it was possible to build variation into the calibration sample set, and the Plackett-Burman design, Box-Behnken design, and a concentrating-diluting method were used to obtain the sample set covered with sufficient fluctuation of process parameters and extended concentration information. NIR data were calibrated to predict the four quality indicators using partial least squares regression (PLSR). In the four calibration models, the root mean squares errors of prediction (RMSEPs) were 1.22 μg/ml, 10.5 μg/ml, 1.43 μg/ml, and 0.433% for lobetyolin, total flavonoids, pigments, and total solid contents, respectively. The results indicated that multi-components quantification of the alcohol precipitation liquid of Codonopsis Radix could be achieved with an NIRS-based method, which offers a useful tool for real-time release testing (RTRT) of intermediates in the manufacture of Codonopsis Radix.

Background: Dusuqing granules (DSQ) have been used in the treatment of bacterial pneumonia clinically, with remarkable benefits. This study was initiated to explore the effects of DSQ on pulmonary inflammation by regulating nuclear factor (NF)-κB/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in bacterial pneumonia rats., Methods: Rat model was duplicated with Klebsiella pneumonia by a one-time intratracheal injection. Rats were randomized into control, model, DSQ and levofloxacin (LVX) groups. After administrated with appropriate medicines for 7 days, lung tissues were harvested and prepared for pathological analysis, and interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-2 detections. NF-κB mRNA was measured by real-time qPCR, and the phosphorylation and total proteins of P38MAPK, JNK46/54, ERK42/44 were determined by Western blotting., Results: Marked pathological impairments were observed in model rats, whereas were improved in DSQ group. The cytokines levels, NF-κB mRNA expression and the phosphorylation of P38MAPK, JNK46/54 and ERK42/44 proteins were significantly higher in model group, and were significantly depressed in DSQ group., Conclusion: The protective effects of DSQ on Klebsiella pneumonia might be attributed to its inactivative effects of NF-κB/ MAPK pathway.

Increasing evidence has shown that Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) has efficient therapeutic effects for advanced gastric adenocarcinoma, while the therapeutic mechanisms underlying this treatment remain unclear.In this study, the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate the survival benefit of CHM treatment, and correlation analysis was applied to identify the most effective components in the formulas. A network pharmacological approach was developed to decipher the potential therapeutic mechanisms of CHM.CHM treatment was an independent protective factor. The hazard ratio was 0.364 (95% CI 0.245-0.540; P < 0.001). The median survival time was 18 months for patients who received CHM treatment, while for patients without CHM treatment was decreased to 9 months (P < 0.001). Thirteen out of the total 204 herbs were significantly correlated with favorable survival outcomes (P < 0.05), likely representing the most effective components in these formulas. Bioinformatics analyses suggested that the simultaneous manipulation of multiple targets in proliferation pathways (such as epidermal growth factor receptor, fibroblast growth factor receptor 2, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and insulin like growth factor 2) and the process of cancer metastasis (collagen families, fibronectin 1 and matrix metalloproteinases families) might largely account for the mechanisms of the 13 herbs against gastric adenocarcinoma.A network pharmacology method was introduced to decipher the underlying mechanisms of CHM, which provides a good foundation for herbal research based on clinical data., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose.

A HPLC-UV-ELSD method was established for simultaneous determination of six components in two intermediates of Shenqi Fuzheng injection (SFI) and the feasibility of establishing quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker (QAMS) methods on different detectors was further explored. Calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside and astragloside Ⅳ were selected as internal reference substances for respectively flavonoids and saponins, and relative correlation factors (RCF) of formononetin-7-O-β-D-glucoside, 9, 10-dimethoxypterocarpan-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, 2'-dihydroxy-3', 4'-dimethoxyisoflavan-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside and astragloside Ⅱ were calculated. Eventually, quantitative results of the 14 samples were compared between QAMS and external standard method. The sample concentrations calculated by QAMS were similar with concentrations calculated by external standard method, and the absolute values of relative deviations were generally less than 5% according to the UV detection of flavonoids. On the basis of ELSD detection for saponins, however, the absolute values of relative deviation of the two methods ranged from 0.48% to 23.17%. A HPLC method was established to determine the contents of the five anthraquinones and rhaponticin in the different varieties of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma. The difference existed in different varieties. The results showed that rhein and rhaponticin were marker substances which could be used to distinguish palm leaf groups rhubarb and wave leaf groups rhubarb. Authentic rhubarb didn't contain rhaponticin. Falsify rhubarb contains trace amounts of rhein. Rheum tanguticum contains abundant rhein. The ratio value of the content of rhein to chrysophanol could be used to distinguish R. tanguticum from the other two authentic varieties (R. palmatum and R. officinale). The content of rhaponticin varied largely in different varieties of wave leaf groups rhubarb.

Radix Astragali (Huangqi in Chinese) and Fructus Ligustri Lucidi (Nvzhenzi in Chinese) (2:1, w/w) are combined in an herbal formulation called Zhenqi Fuzheng capsules (ZFCs) for use in China to improve immunity, promote the recovery of normal functions after surgical operations, and as the most important adjuvant therapy in cancer. In this study, the tissue distribution profiles of the six major bio-active constituents (calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside, ononin, calycosin, formononetin, astragaloside IV and astragaloside II) were examined after oral administration of ZFCs to rats. All six constituents in each tissue were detected simultaneously using UPLC-ESI-MS, and the concentration of each constituent per gram of each tissue was determined. Quantification was performed using low-energy collision tandem mass spectrometry (CID-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scan mode for the following precursor ion→product ion transitions at m/z 447.21→285.30 for calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside, m/z 285.29→270.38 for calycosin, m/z 431→269 for ononin, m/z 269→237 for formononetin, m/z 807.40→627.50 for astragaloside IV, m/z 849.60→669.65 for astragaloside II and m/z 633.18→331.18 for the internal standard (hesperidin). The results showed that in general the tissue concentrations for all six constituents were in the following order: spleen>stomach>thymus>lung>liver>kidney>heart>testicle. The high levels in the spleen and thymus indicated that all six compounds accumulated in organs involved in the immune response, consistent with the immunity effects of ZFC. The high levels in the stomach were consistent with the oral administration of ZFC. This study was the first to compare the tissue distribution of calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside with that of calycosin or of ononin with that of formononetin in rats. It was also the first study to examine the tissue distribution of astragaloside II, calycosin and formononetin following oral administration of ZFC to rats., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Objective: To investigate the effects of Chinese medicine (CM) herbal treatment based on syndrome differentiation on patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Methods: A total of 94 patients with unresectable HCC were reviewed between June 2008 and June 2011. Survival analysis was performed between patients who received CM with/without non-curative antitumor treatments of Western medicine (WM) (CM group, 30 cases) and patients who were not treated with CM but with non-curative antitumor treatments of WM or supportive treatment alone (non-CM group, 64 cases). Then, survival analysis was performed between patients treated with CM combined with non-curative antitumor treatments of WM (combination therapy group, 25 cases) and patients with non-curative antitumor treatments of WM alone (non-curative antitumor treatments group of WM, 52 cases). The survival analysis was performed by Kaplan-Meier method and prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) were assessed by the Cox proportional hazards regression model., Results: The median survival time (MST), 1- and 2-year survival rates of the CM group and the non-CM group were 36 months, 76.7%, 56.1% and 12 months, 48.4%, 26.6%, respectively. The Log-rank test revealed significant difference between the two groups in OS (P<0.01). Cox proportional multivariate analysis revealed that CM was an independent favorable prognostic factor for OS. The MST, 1- and 2-year survival rates of combination therapy group and non-curative antitumor treatments group of WM were 36 months, 76.0%, 55.5% and 13 months, 55.8%, 30.8%, respectively. There was significant difference in OS between the two groups (P=0.004)., Conclusions: CM herbs based on syndrome differentiation have positive effects on survival of patients with unresectable HCC. Furthermore, combination therapy of CM and WM are recommended in HCC treatment.

A new phenylpropanoid and a new isoflavone glycoside were isolated from Shenqi Fuzheng Injection. Their structures were elucidated as (αS)-α-ethenyl-4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzenemethanol (1) and calycosin 7-O-[α-d-glucopyranosyl (1 → 4)]-β-d-glucopyranoside (2) by means of spectroscopic methods including UV, IR, HR-ESI-MS, and NMR. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were confirmed by quantum chemical calculation and acid hydrolysis.

A sensitive and reliable ultra-pressure liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was developed and validated for simultaneous quantification of six main bioactive components, i.e., calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside, ononin, calycosin, formononetin, astragaloside IV, and astragaloside II in rat plasma after oral administration of the 95 % ethanol extraction from Radix Astragali. Plasma samples were extracted with Waters Oasis(TM) HLB 1 cc (30 mg) Extraction Cartridges (SPE) separated on an UPLC™ BEH C18 column and detected by MS with electro spray ionization interface in positive selective ion monitoring mode. Calibration curves offered linear ranges of two orders of magnitude with r (2) > 0.99. The method had the lower limit quantification of 1.30, 0.73, 1.17, 2.33, 0.63, and 0.83 ng/mL for ononin, calycosin, calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside, formononetin, astragaloside IV, and astragaloside II, respectively, with precision less than 10 %. The RSD of intra- and inter-day variations ranged from 1.66 to 6.46 and 3.39 to 6.58 %. This developed method was applied subsequently to pharmacokinetic studies of the six compounds in rats successfully. The proposed method was for the first time to compare the pharmacokinetic difference between calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucoside and calycosin in rat plasma, so as between ononin and formononetin, and studied to the astragaloside II pharmacokinetics in rat plasma.

This study provided a comprehensive component analysis and structure identification of active substances for the anti-gastric ulcer effects of Radix Astragali. The data were generated by organically combining the results from in vivo pharmacodynamic experiments, a cell growth-promoting assay, structure identification, content determination, fingerprinting, and correlation analyses. The fingerprints from high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and from HPLC coupled with evaporative light scattering detectors (ELSD) from 95% ethanol extracts of Radix Astragali (ERA) were determined using HPLC-DAD-ELSD. The structures of 16 compounds were identified using ultra-pressure liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). The contents of these 16 compounds were simultaneously determined in a single run using HPLC-DAD-ELSD. The strength of the anti-ulceration effect of each of the 16 compounds was correlated to its content in the HPLC spectrum using gray relation statistics. The sequence of the contribution from each of the 16 compounds to the anti-gastric ulcer effect was determined. The results showed that ononin, astragalosideIII, and astragalosideIV contributed most to the observed anti-gastric ulcer effects and that these three compounds also exhibited strong growth-promoting effects in cultured GES-1 cells. Objective: To observe the effect of three Chinese medical formulae (Zhifei Mixture I , Zhfei Mixture II, and Zhifei Mixture II) on main and secondary symptoms and signs of children with Totally 70 mycoplasma pneumonia in treating three types of children mycoplasma pneumonia., Methods: children with mycoplasma pneumonia were assigned to the control group (38 cases) and the treatment group (32 case). All patients were intravenously injected with Azithromycin and took Ambroxol Hydrochloride and Clenbuterol Hydrochloride Oral Solution. Those in the treatment group additionally took Zhifei Mixture I , Zhfei Mixture II, and Zhifei Mixture Ill by syndrome typing. Their main and secondary symptoms and signs were observed before and after treatment (main symptoms and signs covered fever, cough, abundant sputum, short breath, and anoxia; secondary symptoms and signs covered aversion to cold, heart rate, facial complexion, spirit, appetite, and sweating)., Results: Seven patients were lost in this study. Compared with before treatment in the same group, scores for main and secondary symptoms and signs decreased in the treatment group (P <0.01). The therapeutic effect on fever and cough was obviously better in the control group (P <0.01). The main and secondary symptoms and signs were more obviously improved in the treatment group than in the control group (P <0.01). Commpared with the control group, scores for main and secondary symptoms and signs decreased more in the treatment group (P <0.01). Patients' main and secondary symptoms and signs were more obviously improved (P <0.05)., Conclusions: Zhifei Mixture combined Western drugs could significantly improve main and secondary symptoms and signs of mycoplasma pneumonia children patients. Its efficacy was superior to that of using Western medicine alone.

Objective: To observe the effect of Yiqi Jianpi plus anticancer herbs on spleen deficiency in colorectal cancer and its anti-tumor role., Methods: Human intestinal cancer cell HT29 xenograft of nude mice model was established. The expression of EGF, VEGF, gastric cancer tumor growth in mice were observed., Results: Protein kinase C expression in in the Yiqi Jianpi group and Yiqi Jianpi anti-tumor group was significantly better than the model group (P<0.01, P<0.05). There was significantly more apoptotic cells in Yiqi Jianpi anti-tumor group than Yiqi Jianpi group and model group (P<0.01). Epidermal growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor expression in Yiqi Jianpi group was significantly lower than Yiqi Jianpi group and model group (P<0.05)., Conclusions: Tumor can inhibit the expression of PKC inhibition. Yiqi Jianpi and anticancer treatment can reduce this inhibition. Besides this treatment can also inhibit expression of tumor related genes such as epidermal growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor., (Copyright © 2014 Hainan Medical College. Background: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has potential anti-apoptotic properties. A novel compound [4-(2-acetoxy-3-((R)-3-(benzylthio)-1-methoxy-1-oxopropan-2- ylamino)-3-oxopropyl)-1,2-phenylene diacetate (DSC)] was synthesized by joining danshensu and cysteine through an appropriate linker. This study investigated if the cytoprotective properties of DSC involved the induction of HO-1., Methods: We evaluated the cytoprotective effects of DSC on H2O2-induced cell damage, apoptosis, intracellular and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) loss, and apoptosis-related proteins expression and its underlying mechanisms., Results: DSC concentration-dependently attenuated cell death, lactate dehydrogenase release, intracellular and mitochondrial ROS production, and ΔΨm collapse, modulated apoptosis-related proteins (Bcl-2, Bax, caspase-3, p53, and cleaved PARP) expression, and inhibited phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 in SH-SY5Y cells induced by H2O2. In addition, DSC concentration-dependently induced HO-1 expression associated with nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-erythroid 2 related factor 2 (Nrf-2), while the effect of DSC was inhibited by a phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor LY294002. Furthermore, the protective effect of DSC on H2O2-induced cell death was abolished by HO-1 inhibitor ZnPP, but was mimicked by carbon monoxide-releasing moiety CORM-3 or HO-1 by-product bilirubin. Finally, DSC inhibited H2O2-induced changes of Bcl-2, Bax, and caspase-3 expression, and all of these effects were reversed by HO-1 silencing., Conclusions: Induction of HO-1 may be, at least in part, responsible for the anti-apoptotic property of DSC, an effect that involved the activation of PI3K/Akt/Nrf-2 axis., General Significance: DSC might have the potential for beneficial therapeutic interventions for neurodegenerative diseases., (Copyright © 2013. Aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN), a progressive renal interstitial fibrosis frequently resulting in end stage renal disease, still remains a common chronic interstitial nephropathy in China. Therefore, great attention should be paid to AAN. This review summarized recent research progress of AAN in terms of in vivo aristolochic acid metabolism, epithelial mesenchymal transition, proteomics, immunity-inflammation, and autophagy, which will help to further understand the pathogenesis of AAN, and to search effective intervention targets.

Objective: To establish the analytical method for the fingerprint of Scutellariae Radix by MEKC-DAD and compare the fingerprints of Scutellariae Radix, Scutellariae Radix Stir-baked and Scutellariae Radix Green., Methods: Based on the mode of micellar electrokinetic chromatography, 40 mmol/L sodium hydrogen phosphate, 15 mmol/L sodium borate, 40 mmol/L SDS, 15% acetonitrile, 7.5% propyl alcohol were selected for the running buffer (pH 8.4). The separation voltage was 20 kV and the detection wavelength was set at 280 nm. Baicalin was used as reference standard, the chromatographic fingerprint was established., Results: MEKC-DAD fingerprint with 9 main peaks was established preliminarily. Regarding to the fingerprints of Scutellariae Radix and its processed products, the samples before and after storage moisture, there were obvious differences in the relative areas of common peaks., Conclusion: The method is reliable, accurate and can be used for quality control of Scutellariae Radix.

Objective: To elaborate the correlation of chromatography fingerprint of Astragali Radix and the efficacy of improving immunity, and express the effective substances foundation., Methods: The water extract was given to irrigation stomach of mice for carbon clearance experiment. Associated the peak area of each common peak from HPLC fingerprint and the date of improving immunity, and studied the correlation between fingerprint and efficacy and found out the effective substances foundation of improving immunity in the method of gray correlation analysis., Results: Polysacharides was the main component of the water extract of Astragali Radix, which could improve immunity function. In carbon clearance experiment, the phagocytic index of the mice with water extract was the largest, and the ability to enhance immunity was the strongest. Grey correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlation of the effect of improving immunity and the component of the water extract of Astragali Radix., Conclusion: It is effective to study the fingerprint and the correlation of fingerprint and the efficacy of traditional chinese medicine for expressing its correlation.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) fingerprints of the chloroform extract fractions of Peucedanum harrysmithii var. subglabrum (PHS) and its phlegm-reducing effect, in order to establish "active component group for reducing phlegm"., Method: HPLC was adopted to determine and analyze HPLC fingerprints of chloroform extract fractions of PHS. Phenol red expectorant experiment was used to observe the phlegm-reducing effect in mice. Mice were administered intragastrically with chloroform extract fractions for 6 days (1.4 g x kg(-1)), with acute bronchitis syrup as the positive control drug (12 mL x kg(-1)). The phenol red secretion in mice was determined by spectrophotometer. Then the grey relational analysis was used to study the spectrum-effect relationship., Result: The phlegm-reducing effect of the chloroform extract fractions of PHS were resulted from the combined effect of all of its chemical components. Its various characteristic peaks represented different chemical components, and the order of their contributions to the phlegm-reducing effect was (number of peaks) 13 > 12 > 16 > 18 > 19 > 6 > 20 > 14 > 1 > 11 > 15 > 10 > 17 > 2 > 5 > 4 > 7 > 3 > 8 > 9, in No. 1, 3, 4, 10, 13 and 16 characteristic peaks were identified as marmesin, psoralen, xanthotoxin, Pd-Ib, pteryxin and peuformosin., Conclusion: The chloroform extract fractions of PHS show strongly phlegm-reducing effect. There may be certain relationship between their HPLC fingerprint and phlegm-reducing effect.

The data were analysed by fuzzy cluster and fingerprint similarity evaluation software was used to compare the similarity of samples., Results: HPCE-DAD fingerprint of 10 main common peaks was established preliminarily. It was discovered that a small number of samples were different from the others., Conclusion: The method is reliable, accurate and can be used for the quality control of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma

The data were analyzed by fuzzy cluster and fingerprint similarity evaluation software was used to compare the similarity of samples., Results: HPCE fingerprints with 7 common peaks of Rehmannia glutinosa were established preliminarily. It was discovered that a small number of samples differed from others. Regarding to the fingerprints of Rehmannia glutinosa and its processed products, there were obvious differences in the relative areas of common peaks., Conclusion: The method is reliable, accurate and can be used for quality control of Rehmannia glutinosa.

1. Herba Leonuri, a traditional Chinese medicine, has a long history of development and application in China. In particular, Herba Leonuri has been widely used in the treatment of gynaecological and obstetric disorders for thousands of years. Recent studies have shown that Herba Leonuri has many different effects. 2. Herba Leonuri contains several active components, including alkaloids, flavonoids, diterpenes compounds and fatty acids. Recent studies have shown that these molecules exert beneficial effects in coronary artery disease and cerebral ischaemia. Thus, these molecules may become novel candidates for drug discovery and development. 3. The present review provides an overview of the chemical composition, with a focus on biological activity, of Herba Leonuri to stimulate new studies on traditional Chinese medicine., (© 2011 The Authors. The data were analyzed by fuzzy cluster and fingerprint similarity evaluation softwarewas used to compare the similarity of samples., Results: HPCE fingerprints with 10 common peaks of Eucommiae Cortex were established preliminarily. It was discovered that a small number of samples differed from others. Regarding to the fingerprints of Eucommiae Cortex and its processed products, there were obvious differences in the relative areas of common peaks., Conclusion: The method is reliable, accurate and can be used for quality control of Eucommiae Cortex.

Chemical investigation of Semen Persicae has led to the isolation of decane (1), triolein (2), nonacosanoic acid (3), oleic acid ethyl ester (4), palmitic acid (5), oleic acid (6) and 15,16-dihydroxy-9Z,12Z-octadecadienoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester (7). Amongst these, compound 7 is a new lipid. Their structures were elucidated by chemical and extensive spectral analysis. Their anticoagulative activities were also evaluated in vitro, which showed that petroleum ether extract and compounds 5-6 could significantly prolong thrombin time while methanol extract could obviously inhibit platelet aggregation.

Quantitative composition-activity relationship (QCAR) study makes it possible to discover active components in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and to predict the integral bioactivity by its chemical composition. In the study, 28 samples of Radix Tinosporae were quantitatively analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography, and their analgesic activities were investigated via abdominal writhing tests on mice. Three genetic algorithms (GA) based approaches including partial least square regression, radial basis function neural network, and support vector regression (SVR) were established to construct QCAR models of R. Tinosporae. The result shows that GA-SVR has the best model performance in the bioactivity prediction of R. Tinosporae; seven major components thereof were discovered to have analgesic activities, and the analgesic activities of these components were partly confirmed by subsequent abdominal writhing test. The proposed approach allows discovering active components in TCM and predicting bioactivity by its chemical composition, and is expected to be utilized as a supplementary tool for the quality control and drug discovery of TCM.

Thirteen new iridoids including seven iridolactones, jatamanins A-M (1-13), and a new lignan, (+)-9'-isovaleroxylariciresinol (14), together with seven known iridoids and 13 lignans were obtained from whole plants of Valeriana jatamansi. Structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopic and crystallographic methods, and the absolute configuration of compound 1 was assigned by application of the modified Mosher method. Jatamanins H (8) and I (9) are iridolactones with an unusual C-8-C-11 oxygen bridge, forming a cage-like structure. (+)-9'-Isovaleroxylariciresinol (14) showed significant in vitro cytotoxicity against PC-3M and HCT-8 cell lines, with IC(50) values of 8.1 and 5.3 microM, respectively.

Phytochemical examination of the methanolic extract from the stem bark of Daphne aurantiaca led to the isolation of six new sesquiterpenoids, dauca-3,11-dien-2alpha,15-diol (1), 3-oxoguai-4-ene-11,12-diol (2), 4alpha,5alpha,8alpha,11alphaH-3-oxoguai-1(10)-en-12,8-olide-7alpha-diol (3), 4alpha,5alpha,8alpha,11betaH-3-oxoguai-1(10)-en-12,8-olide-7beta-diol (4), 4alpha,5betaH-guai-9,7(11)-dien-12,8-olide-1alpha,8alpha-diol (5), 4alpha,5alphaH-guai-9,7(11)-dien-12,8-olide-1alpha,8alpha-diol (6), and a new diterpenoid, 12-O-benzoylphorbol 13-nonanoate (7), together with 10 known terpenoids. All compounds were tested for inhibitory activity against LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Compounds 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 showed potent inhibitory activities against NO production with IC(50) values of 0.01, 0.01, 0.06, 0.07, and 0.03 microM, respectively.

Objective: To explore the effect of Rhein on the hypertrophy of renal proximal tubular epithelial cells induced by high glucose and angiotensin II in rats., Methods: Studies were performed on anesthetized SD rats. Renal proximal tubular were gained by microdissection and cultured in RPMI-1640 medium. The cell types were identified by immunocytochemistry. The renal proximal tubular epithelial cells were incubated with high glucose (30 mmol/L) and angiotensin II (10(-7) mol/L) to induce the hypertrophy of cells. To observe the effect of Rhein on hypertrophy induced by high glucose and angiotensin II, renal proximal tubular epithelial cells were cultured with different concentrations of Rhein (30, 15, 5 mg/L) for 72 h, then cell size, 3H-leucine incorporation, and cellular protein content were detected to observe the changes., Results: High glucose (30 mmol/L) and Ang II (10(-7) mol/L) induced hypertrophy of renal proximal tubular epithelial cells result in, cell size, 3H-leucine incorporation and cellular protein content increased significantly. On the contrary, Rhein inhibited the hypertrophy of renal proximal tubular epithelial cells induced by high glucose and Angiotensin II. Rhein 30 mg/L significantly decreased cell size, 3H-leucine incorporation and cellular protein content. Rhein 15 mg/L decreased 3H-leucine incorporation and cellular protein content. Rhein 5 mg/L decreased cellular protein content., Conclusions: Rhein can inhibit the hypertrophy of renal proximal tubular epithelial cells induced by high glucose and Angiotensin II in rats.
