Paper relics, as carrieres of historical civilization's records and inheritance, could be severely acidic and brittle over time. In this study, the multi-functional dispersion of nanometer magnesium oxide (MgO) carried by 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane-modified bacterial cellulose (KH550-BC) was applied in the impregnation process to repair aged paper, aiming at solving the key problems of anti-acid and strength recovery in the protection of ancient books. The KH550-BC/MgO treatment demonstrated enhanced functional efficacy in repairing aged paper, attributed to the homogeneous and stable distribution of MgO within the nanofibers of BC networks, with minimal impact on the paper's wettability and color. Furthermore, the treatment facilitated the formation of adequate alkali reserves and hydrogen bonding, resulting in superior anti-aging properties in the treated paper during prolonged preservation. Even after 30 days of hygrothermal aging tests, the paper repaired by KH550-BC/MgO was still in a gently alkaline environment (pH was about 7.56), alongside a 32.18% elevation compared to the untreated paper regarding the tear index. Developing simple, inexpensive, fast, sensitive, and specific probes for antibiotic-resistant bacteria is crucial for the management of urinary tract infections (UTIs). We here propose a paper-based sensor for the rapid detection of β -lactamase-producing bacteria in the urine samples of UTI patients. By conjugating a strongly electronegative group –N+(CH 3) 3 with the core structures of cephalosporin and carbapenem antibiotics, two visual probes were achieved to respectively target the extended-spectrum/AmpC β -lactamases (ESBL/AmpC) and carbapenemase, the two most prevalent factors causing antibiotic resistance. By integrating these probes into a portable paper sensor, we confirmed 10 and 8 cases out of 30 clinical urine samples as ESBL/AmpC- and carbapenemase-positive, respectively, demonstrating 100% clinical sensitivity and specificity. This paper sensor can be easily conducted on-site, without resorting to bacterial culture, providing a solution to the challenge of rapid detection of β -lactamase-producing bacteria, particularly in resource-limited settings. Background: The utilization of antibiotic adjuvants presents a promising strategy for addressing bacterial resistance. Recently, the development of antibiotic adjuvants has attracted considerable attention from researchers in academia and industry. This study aimed to identify the most influential publications on antibiotic adjuvants and elucidate the hotspots and research trends in this field. Method: Original articles and reviews related to antibiotic adjuvants were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The top 100 highly cited publications were selected and the visual analyses of publication outputs, countries, institutions, authors, journals, and keywords were conducted using Excel, VOSviewer, or CtieSpace software tools. Results: The top 100 cited publications concerning antibiotic adjuvants spanned the years 1977-2020, with citation counts ranging from 174 to 2,735. These publications encompassed 49 original articles and 51 reviews. The journal "Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy" accounted for the highest number of publications (12%). The top 100 cited publications emanated from 39 countries, with the United States leading in production. Institutions in Canada and the United States exhibited the most substantial contributions to these highly cited publications. A total of 526 authors participated in these studies, with Robert E. W. Hancock, Laura J. V. Piddock, Xian-Zhi Li, Hiroshi Nikaido, and Olga Lomovskaya emerging as the most frequently nominated authors. The most common keywords included "E. coli", "P. aeruginosa", "S. aureus", "in-vitro activity", "antimicrobial peptide", "efflux pump inhibitor" "efflux pump", "MexAB-OprM" and "mechanism". These keywords underscored the hotspots of bacterial resistance mechanisms and the development of novel antibiotic adjuvants. Conclusion: Through the bibliometric analysis, this study identified the top 100 highly cited publications on antibiotic adjuvants. Abstract Antibiotics monitoring is of importance in providing healthy diets by preventing animal husbandry from antibiotic misuse. The development of paper spray provides a time-efficient strategy to analyze antibiotics in complex matrices without sample preparation. In this work, paper spray mass spectrometry was applied to identify and quantify nine antimicrobial residues in four antimicrobial families from four kinds of general food matrix, including beef, chicken meat, milk and egg. Samples were directly placed on the paper without any further sample treatment. The limits of detections (LODs) were obtained as 15.0 μg/kg for marbofloxacin in chicken meat, 15.0 μg/kg for difloxacin in chicken meat, 12.5 μg/kg for lincomycin in beef, 12.5 μg/kg for clindamycin in beef, 4.0 μg/kg for amoxicillin in milk, 4.0 μg/kg for penicillin-G in milk, 10.0 μg/kg for cloxacillin in milk, 12.5 μg/kg for minocycline in egg, and 6.2 μg/kg chlortetracycline in egg, respectively. All the LODs were in accordance with the restriction of maximum residue limits (MRLs) of antimicrobial residues announced by the Council Regulation 2377/90/EEC, which suggests a sufficient capability of the paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) method to rapidly screen antimicrobial residues in foods of animal origins. Respiratory viral infections often mimic the symptoms of infections caused by bacteria; however, restricted and targeted administration of antibiotics is needed to combat growing antimicrobial resistance. This is particularly relevant in low-income settings. In this work, we describe the use of isothermal amplification of viral DNA at 37 °C coupled to a paper-based vertical flow microarray (VFM) setup that utilizes a colorimetric detection of amplicons using functionalized gold nanoparticles. Two oligonucleotide probes, one in-house designed and one known adenoviral probe were tested and validated for microarray detection down to 50 nM using a synthetic target template. Furthermore, primers were shown to function in a recombinase polymerase amplification reaction using both synthetic template and viral DNA. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate adenoviral detection with four different adenoviral species associated with respiratory infections using the paper-based VFM format. The presented assay was validated with selected adenoviral species using the in-house probe, enabling detection at 1 ng of starting material with intra- and inter-assay %CV of ≤ 9% and ≤ 13%. Finally, we validate our overall method using clinical samples. Based on the results, the combination of recombinase polymerase amplification, paper microarray analysis, and nanoparticle-based colorimetric detection could thus be a useful strategy towards rapid and affordable multiplexed viral diagnostics. Background: With the growing global problem of antibiotic resistance it is crucial that clinicians use antibiotics wisely, which largely means following the principles of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). Treatment of various types of wounds is one of the more common reasons for prescribing antibiotics. Objectives: This guidance document is aimed at providing clinicians an understanding of: the basic principles of why AMS is important in caring for patients with infected wounds; who should be involved in AMS; and how to conduct AMS for patients with infected wounds. Methods: We assembled a group of experts in infectious diseases/clinical microbiology (from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy) and wound management (from the European Wound Management Association) who, after thoroughly reviewing the available literature and holding teleconferences, jointly produced this guidance document. Results: All open wounds will be colonised with bacteria, but antibiotic therapy is only required for those that are clinically infected. Therapy is usually empirical to start, but definitive therapy should be based on results of appropriately collected specimens for culture. When prescribed, it should be as narrowly focused, and administered for the shortest duration, as possible. AMS teams should be interdisciplinary, especially including specialists in infection and pharmacy, with input from administrative personnel, the treating clinicians and their patients. Conclusion: Available evidence is limited, but suggests that applying principles of AMS to the care of patients with wounds should help to reduce the unnecessary use of systemic or topical antibiotic therapy and ensure the safest and most clinically effective therapy for infected wounds. Introduction: The recently developed DOT-MGA (direct-on-target microdroplet growth assay) has shown the desirability of direct application of this approach in positive blood cultures and its good performance in detection. This study selected 44 Enterobacteriaceae strains and implemented a DOT-MGA assay on blood cultures to detect their resistance to seven antibiotics. The results of DOT-MGA were compared with the other two antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) methods to analyze the detection performance of DOT-MGA. Methods: We adopted the differential centrifugation to process positive blood-culture (BC). Processed BC broth was directly used for rapid AST using DOT-MGA. Droplets of 6 μL with and without antibiotics at the EUCAST breakpoint concentration were spotted in triplicates onto the surface of a MALDI target. The plates were incubated in a wet box for 4 h before the broth was removed with filter paper. Bruker Biotyper software was used to analyze the test results compared with standard database, and the scores were used to quantify and determine the results. Results: DOT-MGA results were compared with the direct-from-BC disk-diffusion method and results were reported by broth microdilution method, respectively. The comparison demonstrated a 100% growth efficiency in DOT-MGA, a 100% classification consistency for ampicillin, ceftriaxone, and gentamicin, and > 93% classification consistency for tobramycin, aztreonam, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), and ceftazidime. Discussion: These study results have shown that DOT-MGA is suitable for directly identifying bacterial resistance to positive blood cultures in clinical microbiology laboratories. Furthermore, it is conducive for early diagnosis and treatment of patients with bloodstream infection due to its convenience, time efficiency, and good performance in identifying multiple antibiotic-insensitive bacteria. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the ability of a bacterial species to resist the action of an antimicrobial drug, has been on the rise due to the widespread use of antimicrobial agents. Per the World Health Organization, AMR has an estimated annual cost of USD 34 billion in the US and is predicted to be the number one cause of death worldwide by 2050. One way AMR bacteria can spread, and by which individuals can contract AMR infections, is through contaminated water. Monitoring AMR bacteria in the environment currently requires that samples be transported to a central laboratory for slow and labor intensive tests. We have developed an inexpensive assay using paper-based analytical devices (PADs) that can test for the presence of β-lactamase-mediated resistance. To demonstrate viability, the PAD was used to detect β-lactam resistance in wastewater and sewage and identified resistance in individual bacterial species isolated from environmental water sources. Antibiotic resistance (AR) is becoming a worldwide threat due to the increasing occurrence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains. There is a general consensus about the potential implications of the use of antibiotics in livestock on the onset of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), mainly through meat consumption. However, the ever-increasing use of reclaimed wastewater (RWW) in agriculture may also contribute significantly to the non-accounted exposure to antibiotics, ARB, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This position paper aims at evaluating the current knowledge concerning the occurrence of antibiotics, ARBs, and ARGs in edible parts of different common crops irrigated with RWW. We will discuss which regulations on the use of RWW may contribute to the minimization of the prevalence of these contaminants in crops, and provide recommendations on how to minimize the impact of these practices. Scientific literature is published at a rate that makes manual data extraction a highly time-consuming task. The Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) utilizes literature to curate information on antimicrobial resistance genes and to enable time-efficient triage of publications we have developed a classification algorithm for identifying publications describing first reports of new resistance genes. Trained on publications contained in the CARD, CARD*Shark downloads, processes and identifies publications recently added to PubMed that should be reviewed by biocurators. With CARD*Shark, we can minimize the monthly scope of articles a biocurator reviews from hundreds of articles to a few dozen, drastically improving the speed of curation while ensuring no relevant publications are overlooked. Antibiotic resistance represents a growing medical crisis and is predicted to cause over 10 million deaths globally per year by 2050. Among the most dangerous resistant bacteria are the critical priority pathogens denoted by the World Health Organization (WHO). Fortunately, phage therapy, a high potential treatment method that uses viruses to infect and lyse bacteria, can successfully clear antibiotic-resistant infections. However, it has not passed clinical trials due to the lack of a streamlined process for phage characterization, highlighting the need to compare phage host range determination (HRD) techniques to simplify this process. To address this, phage primary research papers with HRD data were collected from PubMed and Google Scholar. 56 suitable studies were grouped by critical priority pathogen and employed HRD technique. The quantity (mL) of agar, phage filtrate, and bacterial culture used was recorded. Means for each group were compared using a non-parametric ANOVA. For the E. coli O157:H7 research paper group, plaque testing used significantly less total material and agar than spot testing with dilutions (p 5 0.047, p 5 0.041), while spot testing without dilutions used significantly less phage filtrate than plaque testing (p 5 0.035) and significantly less bacterial culture than spot testing with dilutions (p 5 0.013), strongly suggesting that spot testing with dilutions should not be chosen over other methods when conducting HRD as it is the most resource-consumptive. Bacteria often cause infections, and we take antibiotics to help us recover. Antibiotics are like magic pills that have saved millions of lives. However, the overuse of antibiotics is now making bacteria evolve fast and evade these antibiotics. A few bacteria like the purple one in the petri plate (Figure 1) have evolved a way to dodge and not get killed by one particular kind of antibiotic. The day might come soon when not a single antibiotic would work, and we could die of even tiny paper cuts. In this article, we discuss what antibiotics are, how they target bacteria, and why bacteria are suddenly becoming resistant to antibiotics. We include a list of ten points that each of us must follow and a pledge for everyone to take, to help stop the spread of antibiotic resistance. Amongst the current, most important, international priorities in public health is the issue of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. This issue is due to the wide misuse and overuse of these drugs, both in human and veterinary medicine. Veterinarians fulfil a very important role as guardians of animal health and as public health actors; if they do not use antimicrobials judiciously, animal health and welfare as well as public health will be severely compromised. Therefore it is of particular importance to study the professional ethos of veterinarians as regards the delivery of antibiotics for animals. In Europe laws and practices regarding the delivery of antimicrobial drugs for animals differ from state to state. In some states, veterinarians are not allowed to sell drugs, they only prescribe, and pharmacists deliver the drugs. In other states, including France, veterinarians are allowed to deliver the drugs they prescribe. In France, veterinarians have thus been accused of conflict of interest; of overprescribing to sell more antibiotics and thus earn more money. Therefore, it appeared particularly accurate to not only study the ethos of veterinarians regarding the delivery of antibiotics to animals, but to also compare this ethos to that of pharmacists. To the authors' knowledge, such a study has never been carried out in any country. Veterinarians' and pharmacists' professional literature was studied and compared using qualitative and quantitative content analysis. A sample of comparable journals was selected for both professions. The study was carried out over a relevant five year period extending from the beginning of 2008 till the end of 2012. All papers dealing with antimicrobial resistances as well as the prescription and delivery of antibiotics for animals were objectively and comprehensively searched and collected using keywords. The selected papers were subsequently independently coded by a multidisciplinary team of coders using conventional, inductive, thematic analysis. The final coding grid was obtained after consensus meetings were held in order to ensure reliability and validity of the data. The results showed that the veterinarians' professional literature studied reflected a primary concern for ethics whereas the pharmacists' professional literature primarily focused on marketing. Half of the veterinary continuing education papers dealt with different aspects of ethics; the other half focused on the scientific aspects of antimicrobial resistances. Amongst other papers, more than 30% tackled ethical questions in relation with the delivery of antibiotics for animals. Conversely, in the pharmacists' literature, half of the continuing education papers concentrated on marketing; the other half described the pharmacology of drugs. Amongst other papers, 60% addressed marketing issues. Ethical questions per se were not approached in the pharmacists' professional literature studied. In conclusion, veterinary ethos for prescription ethics, good antibiotic use and animal welfare seems to be a feature of the profession. There is a critical need for new pathways to develop antibacterial agents to treat life-threatening infections caused by highly resistant bacteria. Traditionally, antibacterial agents have been studied in noninferiority clinical trials that focus on one site of infection (eg, pneumonia, intra-abdominal infection). Conduct of superiority trials for infections caused by highly antibiotic-resistant bacteria represents a new, and as yet, untested paradigm for antibacterial drug development. We sought to define feasible trial designs of antibacterial agents that could enable conduct of superiority and organism-specific clinical trials. These recommendations are the results of several years of active dialogue among the white paper's drafters as well as external collaborators and regulatory officials. There is a pressing need for evidence-based, non-surgical therapy guidance for biofilm-based infections. Conventional phenotypic or genotypic or emerging antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) techniques cannot provide clinically relevant guidelines and widely adaptable stewardship for effective biofilm treatment because they are mainly limited to planktonic bacteria and suffer from many technical and operational challenges. Here, we created an all-electrical, reliable, rapid AST device to monitor antibiotic efficacy in bacterial biofilms that can be practically translatable to clinical settings and industrial antibiotic developments. The electrons metabolically produced by a Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm provided a strong signal for monitoring bacterial growth and treatment efficacy while a 3-D paper-based culturing platform provided a new strategy for rapid biofilm formation through capillary action. When antibiotics are effective against the pathogenic biofilm, their metabolic activities are inhibited, decreasing their electron transfer reactions. The changes in electrical outputs can be measured to assess the treatment effectiveness against pathogenic biofilms. Within 100 minutes, our six-well AST device successfully distinguished antibiotic-susceptible and -resistant P. aeruginosa biofilms, provided a quantifiable minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotics, and characterized the bacterial antibiotic action mechanisms. Background: Antibiotics are compounds made from microorganisms that destroy or prevent the growth of other microbes. The constant failure to engineer new antibiotics and imprudent usage of antibiotics resulted in the rise of antibiotics. In 2017, the World Health Organization released a list of the most pathogenic bacteria having the highest resistance against antibiotics which also included many GramNegative bacteria. In this study, we reviewed the data on publications on antibiotic resistant (ABR) Gramnegative bacteria by bibliometrics. Methods: The data from 2003 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science and used further for statistical analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the characteristics of publications, authors, top countries, leading journals, funding agencies and collaboration aspects. Result: The results showed a total of 10,350 publications with 7.94% annual growth rate in a linear pattern and 23.71 average citations per document on the subject. Lists of the most cited papers and papers with ranking by highest total citations per year were also retrieved. 98% of articles were published in English. Greater research output is from developed countries i.e., USA, China, India, England, Spain, Iran, Italy, Germany, and Japan. USA has the highest number of publications, citations, and Single Country Publications. USA is also the top country to have the highest collaborations with other countries. Conclusion: The study is suggestive for most developing and least developed countries to develop collaborations with researchers from developed countries, especially the USA and UK having domination in research productivity and sources of funding. Solid organic waste is a significant source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and effective treatment strategies are urgently required to limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Here, we studied ARG diversity and abundance as well as the relationship between antibiotic resistome and microbial community structure within a lab-scale solid-state anaerobic digester treating a mixture of food waste, paper and cardboard. A total of 10 samples from digester feed and digestion products were collected for microbial community analysis including small subunit rRNA gene sequencing, total community metagenome sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR. We observed a significant shift in microbial community composition and a reduction in ARG diversity and abundance after 6 weeks of digestion. ARGs were identified in all samples with multidrug resistance being the most abundant ARG type. Thirty-two per cent of ARGs detected in digester feed were located on plasmids indicating potential for horizontal gene transfer. Using metagenomic assembly and binning, we detected potential bacterial hosts of ARGs in digester feed, which included Erwinia , Bifidobacteriaceae , Lactococcus lactis and Lactobacillus. Our results indicate that the process of sequential solid-state anaerobic digestion of food waste, paper and cardboard tested herein provides a significant reduction in the relative abundance of ARGs per 16S rRNA gene. The objective of this review is to identify the microbiological alterations caused by various therapy modalities by critically analyzing the current findings. We limited our search to English-language papers published between 1 January 2004 and 7 May 2024 in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that were relevant to our topic. In the search approach, the Boolean keywords "microbio*" AND "periodontitis" were used. A total of 5152 papers were obtained from the databases Web of Science (2205), PubMed (1793), and Scopus (1154). This resulted in 3266 articles after eliminating duplicates (1886), and 1411 entries were eliminated after their titles and abstracts were examined. The qualitative analysis of the 22 final articles is included in this study. Research on periodontal disease shows that periodontitis alters the oral microbiome and increases antibiotic resistance. Treatments like scaling and root planing (SRP), especially when combined with minocycline, improve clinical outcomes by reducing harmful bacteria. Comprehensive mechanical debridement with antibiotics, probiotics, EMD with bone grafts, and other adjunctive therapies enhances periodontal health. The fight against infectious disease has remained an ever-evolving challenge in the landscape of healthcare. The ability of pathogens to develop resistance against conventional drug treatments has decreased the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, and antibiotic resistance is recognized as one of the main challenges of our time. The goal of this systematic review paper is to provide insight into the research papers published on innovative nanosized drug delivery systems (DDSs) based on gentamycin and vancomycin and to discuss the opportunity of their repurposing through nano DDS formulations. These two antibiotics are selected because (i) gentamicin is the first-line drug used to treat suspected or confirmed infections caused by Gram-negative bacterial infections and (ii) vancomycin is used to treat serious Gram-positive bacterial infections. Moreover, both antibiotics have severe adverse effects, and one of the purposes of their formulation as nanosized DDSs is to overcome them. The review paper includes an introduction focusing on the challenges of infectious diseases and traditional therapeutic treatments, a brief description of the chemical and pharmacological properties of gentamicin and vancomycin, case studies from the literature on innovative nanosized DDSs as carriers of the two antibiotic drugs, and a discussion of the results found in the literature. The abuse of antibiotics urgently requires rapid identification of drug-resistant bacteria at the point of care (POC). Here we report a visual paper sensor that allows rapid (0.25-3 h) discrimination of the subtypes of β-lactamase (the major cause of bacterial resistance) for precision antibiotic therapy. The sensor exhibits high performance in identifying antibiotic-resistant bacteria with 100 real samples from patients with diverse bacterial infections, demonstrating 100% clinical sensitivity and specificity. Further, this sensor can enhance the accuracy of antibiotic use from 48% empirically to 83%, and further from 50.6% to 97.6% after eliminating fungal infection cases. Our work provides a POC testing platform for guiding effective management of bacterial infections in both hospital and community settings. The rapid identification of drug-resistant bacteria is vital for effective treatment and to avoid antibiotic misuse. Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms pose significant threats to public health globally. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has further complicated the treatment of these infections, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies. Among these strategies, the use of hydrogels as delivery systems for delivering antimicrobial agents has gained considerable attention. A nanocatalytic antimicrobial gel responsive to the bacterial infection microenvironment (IME) possessing highly specific antimicrobial properties provides an opportunity to address the bacterial drug resistance. However, the pH conditions and low substrate concentration in the IME limit the catalytic antimicrobial efficiency of these agents, resulting in unsatisfactory performance. The reported transition metal peroxide alleviates endogenous substrate insufficiency due to H2O2 self-supplying properties, but still suffers from difficulties of simple synthesis, long-stem storage and lower intrinsic catalytic efficiency responsive to the IME. In this paper, we report for the first time the use of cerium-manganese bimetallic peroxide nanoparticles (CeMnOx) as a nanocatalyst with high pH responsiveness, H2O2 self-supplying properties, multiple ROS-generating activity and synergistic effect-enhanced cascade catalytic reactions for efficient antimicrobial therapy. CeMnOx achieved more than 95% kill rate at 50 mg mL-1 for E. coli and 100 mg mL-1 for S. aureus, which was superior to those of previously reported works. To further improve the availability, nanoparticle-carrying hydrogels with excellent antimicrobial properties were prepared through in situ gelation, thus adapting to a wider range of antimicrobial application scenarios. Street food may be a vehicle of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) to humans. Foods contaminated with ARB entail serious problems or challenges in the fields of medical care, animal husbandry, food industry, and public health worldwide. The objectives of this systematic review were to identify and evaluate scientific reports associated with ARB isolated from various street foods. "Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis" (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. The bibliographic material covers a period from January 2015 to April 2024. Six electronic scientific databases were searched individually for full-text articles; only those papers that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. Seventeen papers were included in this systematic review. This study highlighted the wide distribution of ARB resistant to β-lactams and other antibiotics, posing significant health risks to consumers. High resistance levels were observed for antibiotics such as ampicillin, ceftriaxone, and tetracycline, while some antibiotics, such as ceftazidime, clavulanic acid, cefoperazone, cotrimoxazole, doxycycline, doripenem, fosfomycin, vancomycin, and piperacillin-tazobactam, demonstrated 100% susceptibility. The prevalence of ARB in street foods varied between 5.2% and 70.8% among different countries. The multiple resistance of various bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, and Klebsiella, to multiple classes of antibiotics, as well as environmental factors contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistance (AR), emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive approaches and coordinated efforts to confront antimicrobial resistance (AMR) under the "One Health" paradigm. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) threatens progress in the control of TB. Mathematical models are increasingly being used to guide public health decisions on managing both antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and TB. It is important to consider bacterial heterogeneity in models as it can have consequences for predictions of resistance prevalence, which may affect decision-making. We conducted a systematic review of published mathematical models to determine the modelling landscape and to explore methods for including bacterial heterogeneity. Our first objective was to identify and analyse the general characteristics of mathematical models of DR-mycobacteria, including M. tuberculosis. The second objective was to analyse methods of including bacterial heterogeneity in these models. We had different definitions of heterogeneity depending on the model level. For between-host models of mycobacterium, heterogeneity was defined as any model where bacteria of the same resistance level were further differentiated. For bacterial population models, heterogeneity was defined as having multiple distinct resistant populations. The search was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in five databases, with studies included if they were mechanistic or simulation models of DR-mycobacteria. We identified 195 studies modelling DR-mycobacteria, with most being dynamic transmission models of non-treatment intervention impact in M. tuberculosis (n = 58). Studies were set in a limited number of specific countries, and 44% of models (n = 85) included only a single level of "multidrug-resistance (MDR)". Only 23 models (8 between-host) included any bacterial heterogeneity. Most of these also captured multiple antibiotic-resistant classes (n = 17), but six models included heterogeneity in bacterial populations resistant to a single antibiotic. Heterogeneity was usually represented by different fitness values for bacteria resistant to the same antibiotic (61%, n = 14). A large and growing body of mathematical models of DR-mycobacterium is being used to explore intervention impact to support policy as well as theoretical explorations of resistance dynamics. However, the majority lack bacterial heterogeneity, suggesting that important evolutionary effects may be missed. Simple Summary: The farming of edible crickets (both two-spotted and house crickets) is increasing. Safety and sustainability in the production of crickets are crucial for consumers and farmers. Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter, classified as non-pathogenic bacteria, are often found. For studied pathogenic bacteria, E. coli was detected at a lower rate of 5%, while Salmonella spp. were not detected. The antimicrobial resistance of isolated E. coli mainly involves penicillin G, amoxicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, lincomycin, and tiamulin. Good sanitary practices, e.g., cleaning and remaining dry, as well as boiling crickets during the harvesting process, may be helpful for the safety of edible cricket production. Food safety for cricket production is a crucial factor in producing edible crickets with safety for consumers and sustainability for two-spotted (Gryllus bimaculatus) as well as house (Acheta domesticus) cricket production. This study was conducted by simultaneously rearing two cricket species, comprising two-spotted crickets (G. bimaculatus) and house crickets (A. domesticus). A total of 16 rearing crates were used for the present study, which were allocated into 8 rearing crates for each studied cricket species, including paper egg cartons. Cricket eggs were incubated in the rearing crates. Once the crickets hatched, tap water and powdered feed were provided ad libitum throughout the experiment. At the end of this study (35 and 42 days for the two-spotted and house crickets, respectively), all crickets were harvested, rinsed in tap water, and boiled in water for 5 min. During the rearing and harvesting processes, samples were collected from various potential contamination points for bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella spp. There were samples of the initial input (feed, drinking water, and staff hands), rearing environment (water pipe, crate wall, living cartons, frass, and cricket surface), and harvesting crickets (harvested, washed, and boiled crickets), with a 2-week sampling interval, except for the last round of sampling for the two-spotted crickets. Subsequently, all samples were submitted to isolate and identify contaminated bacteria. The samples from the last round of sampling for both kinds of crickets were submitted to quantify the level of contamination for E. coli and Salmonella spp., including antimicrobial resistance by the disk diffusion method for the positive isolate. The results showed that bacterial contamination was found in the rearing of both cricket species, primarily involving Klebsiella spp. and Enterobacter spp., mainly found in prepared drinking water and the water pipes of drinking water supply equipment, which are potential sources of contamination with cricket frass. E. coli was found in 4.8% and 4.3% of the two-spotted and house crickets, respectively, while no presence of Salmonella spp. was detected in any submitted samples. The quantification of E. coli and Salmonella spp. indicated E. coli contamination near the water pipe and the frass of two-spotted crickets, but Salmonella spp. was undetectable in both two-spotted and house crickets. The antimicrobial resistance of isolated E. coli mainly involved penicillin G, amoxicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, lincomycin, and tiamulin. Background: With the growing global problem of antibiotic resistance it is crucial that clinicians use antibiotics wisely, which largely means following the principles of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). Treatment of various types of wounds is one of the more common reasons for prescribing antibiotics.Objectives: This guidance document is aimed at providing clinicians an understanding of: the basic principles of why AMS is important in caring for patients with infected wounds; who should be involved in AMS; and how to conduct AMS for patients with infected wounds.Methods: We assembled a group of experts in infectious diseases/clinical microbiology (from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy) and wound management (from the European Wound Management Association) who, after thoroughly reviewing the available literature and holding teleconferences, jointly produced this guidance document.Results: All open wounds will be colonized with bacteria, but antibiotic therapy is only required for those that are clinically infected. Therapy is usually empirical to start, but definitive therapy should be based on results of appropriately collected specimens for culture. When prescribed, it should be as narrowly focused, and administered for the shortest duration, as possible. AMS teams should be interdisciplinary, especially including specialists in infection and pharmacy, with input from administrative personnel, the treating clinicians and their patients.Conclusions: Available evidence is limited, but suggests that applying principles of AMS to the care of patients with wounds should help to reduce the unnecessary use of systemic or topical antibiotic therapy and ensure the safest and most clinically effective therapy for infected wounds. Resistance of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) to antibiotics has reached alarming levels worldwide, and the efficacy of the H. pylori eradication treatment has decreased dramatically because of antibiotic resistance. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the development status, research hotspots, and future trends related to H. pylori antibiotic resistance, we conducted a thorough retrospective analysis via the bibliometrics method. We searched the Science Citation Index Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection for all pertinent articles on H. pylori antibiotic resistance from 2013 to 2022. R-bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer tools were utilized to depict statistical evaluations in order to provide an unbiased presentation and forecasts in the field. We incorporated a total of 3,509 articles related to H. pylori antibiotic resistance. Publications were inconsistent prior to 2017, but steadily increased after 2017. China generated the most papers and the United States of America received the most citations and the highest H-index. Baylor College of Medicine was the most influential institution in this field, with the highest number of publications and citations, as well as the highest H-index. Helicobacter was the most productive journal, followed by the World Journal of Gastroenterology and Frontiers in Microbiology. The World Journal of Gastroenterology had the highest citation. Graham, David Y was the most productive and cited author. Clarithromycin resistance, prevalence, gastric cancer, quadruple therapy, sequential therapy, 23S rRNA, whole genome sequencing, bismuth, and probiotics appeared with a high frequency in the keywords. The top keywords with the highest citation bursts were vonoprazan, RdxA, biofilm formation, and fatty acid chain. Our research illustrated a multi-dimensional facet and a holistic knowledge structure for H. pylori antibiotic resistance research over the past decade, which can serve as a guide for the H. pylori research community to conduct in-depth investigations in the future. Simple Summary: Antibiotics are medicines used to prevent and treat infections in humans, animals, and plants. Antibiotic resistance is a naturally occurring phenomenon that has emerged as one of the most significant threats to global health and food security. Bacteria have the ability to acquire mutations that render them resistant to antibiotic molecules, contributing to the spread of resistance. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have played a pivotal role in driving the development and proliferation of antibiotic resistance. The United Nations is estimating that by 2050, up to 10 million human deaths each year will be caused by the "superbugs", very dangerous pathogens resistant to multiple antibiotic molecules. There will be health and macroeconomic consequences for the world if antimicrobial resistance is not tackled. The availability of antibiotics without prescription contributes to their overuse and misuse. Urgent measures are required to mitigate these issues and their substantial global impact. One of these measures is the search for new antibiotics designed on the basis of new targets of resistance. In this review, we show that enzymes called flavin monooxygenases could be a new and so-far-underseen candidate. Carbapenems are a group of broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics that in many cases are the last effective defense against infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as some strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Resistance to carbapenems has emerged and is beginning to spread, becoming an ongoing public-health problem of global dimensions, causing serious outbreaks, and dramatically limiting treatment options. This paper reviews the role of flavin monooxygenases in antibiotic resistance, with a specific focus on carbapenem resistance and the recently discovered mechanism mediated by Baeyer–Villiger monooxygenases. Flavin monooxygenases are enzymes involved in the metabolism and detoxification of compounds, including antibiotics. Understanding their role in antibiotic resistance is crucial. Acute otitis media (AOM) in children is one of the leading causes of health care visits and antibiotic prescriptions worldwide. The overall aim of the current study is twofold: 1. to analyze and discuss the antibiotic prescription patterns in AOM in children without complications or risk factors and 2. to assess to what extent the watchful-waiting approach is a real practice or a mere desideratum. We performed an electronic search in the PubMed and Embase databases from 2013 to 2023 to capture original research studies investigating antibiotic prescribing patterns for AOM in children. Among the 12 papers included in the analysis, the antibiotic prescription rate ranged from 44.8% to 98%. Our study reveals similarities regarding the use of amoxicillin as a first-line antibiotic in pediatric AOM, but also discrepancies in the watchful-waiting approach attitude and in the choice of second or third-line antimicrobial agents. The proportion of cases managed with the watchful-waiting approach ranged from 7.5% (Australia) to 55.2% (Finland). Denmark was the only country reporting penicillin V as a first-choice regimen for children with AOM, which fulfils the guidelines' recommendations. The most unsatisfying rate of amoxicillin use was recorded in Japan, contrary to the recommendations of local guidelines. The use of quinolones was reported in two out of twelve studies, with the highest proportion in Japan, where tosufloxacin was used in 21.4% of the total number of cases. The duration of the antibiotic regimens was analyzed in three out of twelve papers. Since global antibiotic overuse contributes to the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria, new strategies are needed to increase the rate of watchful waiting and to promote the judicious use of antibiotics. Background: Novel tuberculosis (TB) drugs and the need to treat drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) are likely to bring about substantial transformations in TB treatment in coming years. An evidence base for cost and cost-effectiveness analyses of these developments is needed. Objective: Our objective was to perform a review of papers assessing provider-incurred as well as patient-incurred costs of treating both drug-susceptible (DS) and multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB. Methods: Five databases (EMBASE, Medline, the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database, the Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Registry, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Services Literature) were searched for cost and economic evaluation full-text papers containing primary DS-TB and MDR-TB treatment cost data published in peer-reviewed journals between January 1990 and February 2015. No language restrictions were set. The search terms were a combination of 'tuberculosis', 'multidrug-resistant tuberculosis', 'cost', and 'treatment'. In the selected papers, study methods and characteristics, quality indicators and costs were extracted into summary tables according to pre-defined criteria. Results were analysed according to country income groups and for provider costs, patient costs and productivity losses. All values were converted to $US, year 2014 values, so that studies could be compared. Results: We selected 71 treatment cost papers on DS-TB only, ten papers on MDR-TB only and nine papers that included both DS-TB and MDR-TB. These papers provided evidence on the costs of treating DS-TB and MDR-TB in 50 and 16 countries, respectively. In 31 % of the papers, only provider costs were included; 26 % included only patient-incurred costs, and the remaining 43 % estimated costs incurred by both. From the provider perspective, mean DS-TB treatment costs per patient were US$14,659 in high-income countries (HICs), US$840 in upper middle-income countries (UMICs), US$273 in lower middle-income (LMICs), and US$258 in low-income countries (LICs), showing a strong positive correlation. The respective costs for treating MDR-TB were US$83,365, US$5284, US$6313 and US$1218. Costs incurred by patients when seeking treatment for DS-TB accounted for an additional 3 % of the provider costs in HICs. A greater burden was seen in the other income groups, increasing the costs of DS-TB treatment by 72 % in UMICs, 60 % in LICs and 31 % in LMICs. When provider costs, patient costs and productivity losses were combined, productivity losses accounted for 16 % in HICs, 29 % in UMICs, 40 % in LMICs and 38 % in LICs. Conclusion: Cost data for MDR-TB treatment are limited, and the variation in delivery mechanisms, as well as the rapidly evolving diagnosis and treatment regimens, means that it is essential to increase the number of studies assessing the cost from both provider and patient perspectives. There is substantial evidence available on the costs of DS-TB treatment from all regions of the world. Sustainable access to effective antibiotics is a foundational need for functioning health care that is increasingly threatened by antibiotic resistance. Although resistance has been known as long as antibiotics have been in clinical use, there are still multiple gaps in the global and local responses. One often cited cause for this complacency is the language that is used to describe the problem and its consequences. In this paper, we survey some examples of the current discussions around antibiotic resistance and seek to offer a path towards unified and understandable messaging that is relevant both to the public and policymakers by using narratives that highlight the individual and societal consequences of antibiotic resistance. Major shortcomings in the current language that hamper both the understanding of antibiotic resistance and needed behaviour change have been identified in scientific papers and special reports. These shortcomings range from terminology that is difficult to understand, through a lack of personal relevance, to a fragmented response in the policy field. We propose that scientists, including behaviour change experts, and other key stakeholders that are engaged in the issue take lead to agreement on the core scientific facts and to formulate a vision that can be a foundation for creation of consistent global narratives. These narratives must in turn be adapted to local contexts. Development of such narratives should be viewed as an essential component in national action plans on AMR to raise awareness, empower citizens and incentivise societal behaviour change, policy development and implementation of governance structures. This paper aimed to evaluate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on prescription rates and antibiotic resistance in a university hospital. A retrospective study was conducted on the medical records of patients admitted to the Bihor Emergency Clinical County Hospital in Romania in 2019 (pre-pandemic) and 2021 (during the pandemic period). We evaluated the antibiotic consumption index (ACI) and susceptibility rates. The overall percentage of antibiotic prescribing increased in 2021, while the total number of patients decreased. Genito-urinary, digestive, respiratory infections, heart diseases and wounds were the most common conditions for antibiotic prescriptions, but the number of them decreased in 2021. There was a decrease in the proportion of antibiotics from the Watch and Reserve class and an increase in the proportion of antibiotics from the Access class. Antibiotic use has been reduced despite an increase in the number of patients, with a high consumption in the Watch group in the ICU wards. By contrast, surgical wards had the highest rate of antibiotic prescriptions, but a decrease in the number of patients. The patients who were administered antibiotics were hospitalized for diagnoses other than COVID-19. Almost all prescribed antibiotics displayed decreasing sensitivity rates. The number of isolated ESKAPE pathogens, except for Staphylococcus aureus methicillin-resistant strains, were increased. The extensive use of antibiotics in the medical and aquaculture industries has led to antibiotic resistance, be a global public health concern. Compared with soil and water, there are few reports on antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the air. To provide theoretical support for scientific and effective response to the cross-media migration of microbial resistance, this paper comprehensively reviewed the occurrence status, influencing factors and transmission mechanism of ARB and ARGs in different types of ambient air at home and abroad. The results showed that the abundance of ARB and ARGs in the air was affected by environmental conditions and sampling factors. The pollution was more serious in typical polluted areas such as animal farms, sewage treatment plants and hospitals. The dominant types of ARGs in the above environment were tetracyclines, sulfonamides and β-lactams. Among them, the abundance of ARGs in the air of animal farms was about 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than that in other environments. The highest abundance was found in pig farm compared to other animal houses. At present, there was still no standard for the sampling requirements of ARB and ARGs in the air. The sampling season, duration, particle size and coexisting pollutants all affected their detection. Air pollution, soil water content, rainfall and air mass movement were proved to play a certain role in affecting the spread of ARB and ARGs in the air. Based on it, the research on the migration mechanism of ARB and ARGs at the soil-air interface needs to be further intensified. The review aimed to comprehensively reveal the occurrence characteristics of ARB and ARGs in the air, and provide theoretical support for the scientific and effective response to the cross-media migration of microbial resistance. The specificity of phages and their ability to evolve and overcome bacterial resistance make them potentially useful as adjuncts in the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. The goal of this study was to mimic a natural grouping of phages of interest and to evaluate the nature of their proliferation dynamics with bacteria. We have, for the first time, transferred naturally occurring phage groups directly from their sources of isolation to in vitro and identified 13 P. aeruginosa and 11 K. pneumoniae phages of 18 different genera, whose host range was grouped as 1.2–17%, 28–48% and 60–87%, using a large collection of P. aeruginosa (n = 102) and K. pneumoniae (n = 155) strains carrying different virulence factors and phage binding receptors. We introduced the interpretation model curve for phage liquid culturing, which allows easy and quick analysis of bacterial and phage co-proliferation and growth of phage-resistant mutants (PRM) based on qualitative and partially quantitative evaluations. We assayed phage lytic activities both individually and in 14 different cocktails on planktonic bacterial cultures, including three resistotypes of P. aeruginosa (PAO1, PA14 and PA7) and seven K. pneumoniae strains of different capsular serotypes. Based on the results, the natural phage cocktails designed and tested in this study largely performed well and inhibited PRM growth either synergistically or in proto-cooperation. This study contributes to the knowledge of phage behavior in cocktails and the formulation of therapeutic phage preparations. The emergence of antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat to public health worldwide, affecting various medical fields, including ophthalmology. Eye infections, ranging from conjunctivitis to more severe conditions like keratitis, are commonly treated with antibiotics. However, the misuse and overuse of these drugs have led to the development of resistant strains of bacteria, allowing traditional treatments ineffective. This paper aims to examine the current situation of antibiotic resistance in eye infections globally, with a specific focus on a large group of hospitals located in Milan (Italy) with considerable experience in cataract and cornea surgery as well as in retinopathy. The results of the study show the prevalence of Gram-positives in the tested samples and a low resistance of fluoroquinolones and glycopeptides. The results also highlight the need to implement sample collection methods for ocular infections, as the quantity of positive samples is rather low compared to the total number of samples. In conclusion, the study, although with limited data, shows that resistance to aminoglycosides and cephalosporins is a situation to be monitored. Bacteriophage therapy is a rapidly growing field of study. Narrow host ranges, bacterial resistance, and limited antibiotic availability make lytic phages a feasible therapeutic potential. Phage discovery, a critical step in developing phage therapy, is a pathway to accessible treatment. This has always been a laborious, time-consuming and resource-intensive process. In this paper, we describe a 96-well plate low-volume bacteriophage enrichment method with concentrated environmental sources to rapidly discover and isolate phages targeting multiple organisms simultaneously. Samples from natural water sources, wastewater influent, and activated sludge were tested in large volume enrichment cultures and low-volume 96-well plate format. Each plate has the capacity to run as many as 48 different combinations with multiple bacterial hosts. The time to identify the presence of phage in a sample was 5 to 10 hours in the low-volume format versus a minimum of 2 days in the traditional enrichment method. The labor and expense involved also favor the 96-well plate format. There was some loss of discovered phages using this technique, primarily targeting bacterial species less prevalent in the environment. The overuse of antibiotics in livestock contributes to the antibiotic resistance pandemic. The assessment of the actual antibiotic consumption is crucial in limiting the expansion of the problem effectively. The aim of this study was to provide the first qualitative and quantitative analysis of antimicrobial usage using data from paper-based registers on dairy and beef farms located in the Umbria region, Italy. Antimicrobial therapies of a one-year period were collected from 101 farms with at least 50 cattle each. Defined daily doses (DDDvet) and defined course doses (DCDvet) were calculated per administration route and antimicrobial class. The total courses administered were fewer in beef (330.7 × 10−3 DCDvet/year) than in dairy farms (1034.1 × 10−3 DCDvet/year). The use of the highest priority critically important antimicrobials (HPCIAs) was higher (p = 0.0033) in dairy than in beef herds. In terms of DDDvet, the parenteral fluoroquinolone administration ranked second and fourth on dairy and beef farms, respectively; the consumption of beta-lactams was ten times higher on dairy than on beef farms. Our results confirm that intensive dairy management practices are associated with increased antibiotic consumption and highlight the necessity to strengthen the existing stewardship programs by involving all stakeholders in effective antimicrobial resistance reduction plans. Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common pathogens in surgical site infections (SSIs). However, comprehensive epidemiological and antibiotic resistance details for P aeruginosa in Chinese SSIs are lacking. We evaluated the proportions and antimicrobial resistance of P aeruginosa among patients with SSIs in China. Methods Relevant papers from January 2010 to August 2022 were searched in databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and Weipu. A meta-analysis was performed to analyze the proportions and 95% confidence interval (CIs) of P aeruginosa among patients with SSIs. Meta-regression analysis was used to investigate the proportion difference among different subgroups and antimicrobial resistance. Results A total of 72 studies met inclusion criteria, involving 33 050 isolated strains. The overall proportion of P aeruginosa among patients with SSIs was 16.0% (95% CI, 13.9%–18.2%). Subgroup analysis showed higher proportions in orthopedic (18.3% [95% CI, 15.6%–21.0%]) and abdominal surgery (17.3% [95% CI, 9.9%–26.2%]). The proportion in the central region (18.6% [95% CI, 15.3%–22.1%]) was slightly higher than that in other regions. Antibiotic resistance rates significantly increased after 2015: cefoperazone (36.2%), ceftriaxone (38.9%), levofloxacin (20.5%), and aztreonam (24.0%). Notably, P aeruginosa resistance to ampicillin and cefazolin exceeded 90.0%. Conclusions The proportion of P aeruginosa infection among patients with SSIs was higher than the data reported by the Chinese Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System, indicating rising antimicrobial resistance. Many different disciplines are very much interested in the antibacterial qualities of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (nano-MgO) and their composites. The mechanics behind these qualities and their uses will be covered in detail in this exposition. Although nano-particulate magnesium oxide (nano-MgO) has received much interest as an antibacterial agent, its exact antibacterial mechanisms are still not fully understood, requiring more in-depth research in the areas of stability, processability, and safety. There is a discernible trend in the field of antibacterial materials that combines conventional materials with natural elements. As a newly developed ceramic antibacterial agent with distinct antibacterial properties and a wide range of uses, nano-MgO has become a major area of research interest. As a result, this paper summarizes the many approaches to synthesizing nano-MgO powder, analyzes its antibacterial properties, and offers a current assessment of new developments in the field and composite manufacturing methods. Moreover, it carefully points out common problems and suggests directions for future study. It is essential to the search for cutting-edge antibacterial materials because of its many qualities and wide range of potential uses. Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a major public health concern. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) may be horizontally transferred between human, animal, and environmental microbiomes, potentially linking their interdependent ecosystems to public health. Birds, being among the most diverse species on the planet, can facilitate the global spread of resistance genes through their long-distance dispersal, consequently posing significant health risks. This paper reviews how wild birds can actively mediate the transmission of ARGs in ecosystems and proposes their significant roles as transmission agents. It then describes the distinct roles of urban resident birds and migratory birds in the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes. Particularly, the review highlights the pivotal role of migratory birds in the long-distance transmission of ARGs. Antimicrobial resistance is a growing concern due to the growth of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, which makes it difficult to treat infection. Due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties against a diverse array of bacteria, both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and fungi, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus larval antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have demonstrated potential as antimicrobial agents for the treatment of microbial infections and prevention of antibiotic resistance. This study emphasizes the unexplored mechanisms of action of R. ferrugineus larvae against microorganisms. Among the most widely discussed mechanisms is the effect of AMPs in larvae in response to a threat or infection. Modulation of immune-related genes in the intestine and phagocytic capacity of its hemocytes may also affect the antimicrobial activity of R. ferrugineus larvae, with an increase in phenoloxidase activity possibly correlated with microbial clearance and survival rates of larvae. The safety and toxicity of R. ferrugineus larvae extracts, as well as their long-term efficacy, are also addressed in this paper. The implications of future research are explored in this paper, and it is certain that R. ferrugineus larvae have the potential to be developed as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent with proper investigation. The acquisition and expression of antibiotic resistance implies changes in bacterial cell physiology, imposing fitness costs. Many human opportunistic pathogenic bacteria, such as those causing urinary tract or bloodstream infections, colonize the gut. In this opinionated review, we will examine the various types of stress that these bacteria might suffer during their intestinal stay. These stresses, and their compensatory responses, probably have a fitness cost, which might be additive to the cost of expressing antibiotic resistance. Such an effect could result in a disadvantage relative to antibiotic susceptible populations that might replace the resistant ones. The opinion proposed in this paper is that the effect of these combinations of fitness costs should be tested in antibiotic resistant bacteria with susceptible ones as controls. This testing might provide opportunities to increase the bacterial gut stress boosting physiological biomolecules or using dietary interventions. This approach to reduce the burden of antibiotic-resistant populations certainly must be answered empirically. Objective: In 2021, an outbreak of an infectious disease characterized by torticollis, cataracts, and neurological disorders caused massive mortality in farmed American bullfrogs Rana catesbeiana in Hubei province, China. We identified the causal agent in this outbreak, characterized its pathogenicity, and screened candidate antimicrobial agents for future disease control. Methods: Bacterium was isolated from the diseased American bullfrogs and identified based on biochemical tests, sequence analyses (16S ribosomal RNA; DNA gyrase subunit B), and experimental challenge. Furthermore, antibiotic sensitivity of the isolated strain was detected with Kirby–Bauer paper diffusion method, and the antibacterial activity of 60 traditional Chinese herbal extracts against the isolated strain was evaluated by agar disc diffusion and broth dilution assays. Result: We identified Elizabathkingia miricola strain FB210601 as the causative agent of this disease. The isolated E. miricola strain FB210601 exhibited extensive antibiotic resistance to all tested quinolones, β‐lactam antibiotics, and aminoglycosides. Eight herbal extracts exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against E. miricola FB210601, especially Caesalpinia sappan and Rhus chinensis, with minimal inhibitory concentrations less than 0.2 mg/mL. Additionally, the combined effects of two‐component herbal mixtures containing C. sappan or R. chinensis were greater than those of the individual extracts. Conclusion: Our results provide a reference for understanding the pathogenesis of Elizabethkingia infection in frogs. Furthermore, this study will aid in the application of herbal extracts for protection against infections caused by multidrug‐resistant Elizabathkingia in the future. Actions that are taken to preserve effective antibacterial agents and eliminate transmission of resistant organisms are crucial to prevent a catastrophic postantibiotic era. In this systematic review, we searched and appraised relevant texts and expert opinions to determine effective strategies to tackle bacterial resistance worldwide. We considered expert opinions, consensus, current discourses, comments, assumptions or assertions and discussion papers published in English. We searched following databases for expert opinion‐based literature: MEDLINE, CINAHL, ISI Web of Knowledge, SCOPUS, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and World Health Organization (WHO). We extracted the textual data from texts using a standardised data extraction tool. Textual pooling was not possible, so the conclusions were presented in a narrative form. Eighteen texts were included in this review. The findings show that, the most repeated policies and strategies include implementing and strengthening bacterial resistance surveillance, developing national guidelines, improving public awareness; enhancing home and everyday life hygiene; improving prescribing patterns, improving laboratories capacity, promoting innovation and research in new drugs and technology and strengthening coordination. This review systematically gathered strategies that were recommended by textual publications. To our knowledge, this was the first systematic review of text and opinion in the field of bacterial resistance. These results can be used by policymakers, hospital managers, and governments, alongside the results of quantitative and qualitative systematic reviews. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
