Drought threatens plant growth and related ecosystem services. The emergence of plant drought stress under edaphic drought is well studied, whilst the importance of atmospheric drought only recently gained momentum. Yet, little is known about the interaction and relative contribution of edaphic and atmospheric drought on the emergence of plant drought stress. We conducted a gradient experiment, fully crossing gravimetric water content (GWC: maximum water holding capacity-permanent wilting point) and vapour pressure deficit (VPD: 1-2.25 kPa) using five wheat varieties from three species (Triticum monococcum, T. durum & T. aestivum). We quantified the occurrence of plant drought stress on molecular (abscisic acid), cellular (stomatal conductance), organ (leaf water potential) and stand level (evapotranspiration). Plant drought stress increased with decreasing GWC across all organizational levels. This effect was magnified nonlinearly by VPD after passing a critical threshold of soil water availability. At around 20%GWC (soil matric potential 0.012 MPa), plants lost their ability to regulate leaf water potential via stomata regulation, followed by the emergence of hydraulic dysfunction. The emergence of plant drought stress is characterized by changing relative contributions of soil versus atmosphere and their non-linear interaction. Changes in rainfall patterns are important environmental factors affecting plant growth, especially when larger precipitation events and prolonged drought periods occur in subtropical regions. There are many studies on how drought reduces plant biomass through drought-sensitive functional traits, but how excess water affects plant growth and ecophysiology is still poorly understood. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted on Schima superba (Theaceae), a dominant tree species in subtropical forests and commonly used in forestry, in a closed chamber under control (25% soil water content (SWC) as in local forests), drought stress (D, 15% SWC) and moisture stress (W, 35% SWC). Plant growth and ecophysiological traits related to morphology, leaf gas exchange, water potential and structural traits were measured. Compared to control, S. suberba under dry conditions significantly decreased its aboveground biomass, photosynthetic rate (A), leaf water potential and nitrogen use efficiency, but increased intrinsic water use efficiency, root to shoot ratio and specific root length. S. superba under wet conditions also significantly decreased its total biomass, aboveground biomass and specific root length, while W had no effect on A and leaf water potential. Our results indicate that S. superba shows a decrease in carbon gain under drought stress, but less response under wet conditions. This emphasizes the need to consider the strength and frequency of rainfall pattern changes in future studies because rainfall may either alleviate or intensify the effects of drought stress depending on the moisture level, thus suitable water conditions is important for better management of this tree species in subtropical China., (© 2024. In our previous study, the decontamination efficiency of cesium-137 ( 137 Cs) by Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) in the field was shown to be variable and often influenced by natural environmental factors. To elucidate the factors influencing this variable 137 Cs-decontamination efficiency, we investigated the influences of soil type and drought stress on Cs accumulation using cesium-133 ( 133 Cs) in Napier grass grown in plastic containers. The experiment was performed using two soil types (Soil A and B) and three different soil moisture conditions: well-watered control (CL), slight drought stress (SD), and moderate drought stress (MD). Overall, our results indicate that soil type and drought have a significant impact on plant growth and 133 Cs accumulation in Napier grass. Plant height (PH), tiller number (TN), leaf width (W leaf ), and dry matter weight of aboveground parts (DW above ) and root parts (DW root ) in Soil B were greater than those in Soil A. Drought stress negatively affected chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (maximal quantum efficiency of photosystem (PS) II photochemistry and potential activity of PS II), PH, TN, W leaf , DW above , DW root , and total 133 Cs content (TCs), but it had a positive effect on 133 Cs concentration. The 133 Cs concentration in the aboveground parts (Cs above ) was increased by MD approximately 1.62-fold in Soil A and 1.11-fold in Soil B compared to each CL counterpart. The TCs in the aboveground parts (TCs above ) decreased due to drought by approximately 19.9%-39.0% in Soil A and 49.9%-62.7% in Soil B; however, there was no significant effect on TCs above due to soil type. Drought and nitrogen enrichment could profoundly affect the productivity of semiarid ecosystems. However, how ecosystem productivity will respond to different drought scenarios, especially with a concurrent increase in nitrogen availability, is still poorly understood. Using data from a 4-year field experiment conducted in a semiarid temperate steppe, we explored the responses of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to different drought scenarios and nitrogen addition, and the underlying mechanisms linking soil properties, plant species richness, functional diversity (community-weighted means of plant traits, functional dispersion) and phylogenetic diversity (net relatedness index) to ANPP. Our results showed that completely excluding precipitation in June (1-month intense drought) and reducing half the precipitation amount from June to August (season-long chronic drought) both significantly reduced ANPP, with the latter having a more negative impact on ANPP. However, reducing half of the precipitation frequency from June to August (precipitation redistribution) had no significant effect on ANPP. Nitrogen addition increased ANPP irrespective of drought scenarios. ANPP was primarily determined by soil moisture and nitrogen availability by regulating the community-weighted means of plant height, rather than other aspects of plant diversity. Our findings suggest that precipitation amount is more important than precipitation redistribution in influencing the productivity of temperate steppe, and nitrogen supply could alleviate the adverse impacts of drought on grassland productivity. Endophytes generally increase antioxidant contents of plants subjected to environmental stresses. However, the mechanisms by which endophytes alter the accumulation of antioxidants in plant tissues are not entirely clear. We hypothesized that, in stress situations, endophytes would simultaneously reduce oxidative damage and increase antioxidant contents of plants and that the accumulation of antioxidants would be a consequence of the endophyte ability to regulate the expression of plant antioxidant genes. We investigated the effects of the fungal endophyte Epichloë gansuensis (C.J. Li & Nan) on oxidative damage, antioxidant contents, and expression of representative genes associated with antioxidant pathways in Achnatherum inebrians (Hance) Keng plants subjected to low (15%) and high (60%) soil moisture conditions. Gene expression levels were measured using RNA-seq. As expected, the endophyte reduced the oxidative damage by 17.55% and increased the antioxidant contents by 53.14% (on average) in plants subjected to low soil moisture. In line with the accumulation of antioxidants in plant tissues, the endophyte increased the expression of most plant genes associated with the biosynthesis of antioxidants (e.g., MIOX, crtB, gpx) while it reduced the expression of plant genes related to the metabolization of antioxidants (e.g., GST, PRODH, ALDH). Our findings suggest that endophyte ability of increasing antioxidant contents in plants may reduce the oxidative damage caused by stresses and that the fungal regulation of plant antioxidants would partly explain the accumulation of these compounds in plant tissues., (© 2024. The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition (δ18O, δ2H) of plant tissues are key tools for the reconstruction of hydrological and plant physiological processes and may therefore be used to disentangle the reasons for tree mortality. However, how both elements respond to soil drought conditions before death has rarely been investigated. To test this, we performed a greenhouse study and determined predisposing fertilization and lethal soil drought effects on δ18O and δ2H values of organic matter in leaves and tree rings of living and dead saplings of five European tree species. For mechanistic insights, we additionally measured isotopic (i.e. δ18O and δ2H values of leaf and twig water), physiological (i.e. leaf water potential and gas-exchange) and metabolic traits (i.e. leaf and stem non-structural carbohydrate concentration, carbon-to-nitrogen ratios). Across all species, lethal soil drought generally caused a homogenous 2H-enrichment in leaf and tree-ring organic matter, but a low and heterogenous δ18O response in the same tissues. Unlike δ18O values, δ2H values of tree-ring organic matter were correlated with those of leaf and twig water and with plant physiological traits across treatments and species. The 2H-enrichment in plant organic matter also went along with a decrease in stem starch concentrations under soil drought compared with well-watered conditions. In contrast, the predisposing fertilization had generally no significant effect on any tested isotopic, physiological and metabolic traits. We propose that the 2H-enrichment in the dead trees is related to (i) the plant water isotopic composition, (ii) metabolic processes shaping leaf non-structural carbohydrates, (iii) the use of carbon reserves for growth and (iv) species-specific physiological adjustments. Soil water balance is an essential element to consider for the management of droughts and agricultural land use. It is important to evaluate the water consumption of a crop in each of its phenological phases and the status of water reserves during critical hydrologic periods. This study developed an agricultural drought index (Standardized Soil Moisture Deficit Index - SMODI) conceptualized with a water balance model considering the vegetation stress caused by soil moisture deficit. This contribution was based on meteorological information, soil moisture from satellite images, hydrophysical properties of the soil and crop evapotranspiration. Information from 61 weather stations located in the dry zone of Tolima was used for estimating the water balance. SMODI was compared with the most common drought indexes: Standardized Precipitation - Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), the Palmer Self-Calibrated Drought Index (scPDSI), and other eleven macroclimatic indexes. Pearson's correlation coefficients (r), Tukey's test, and analysis of variance were applied to analyze the degree of association between SMODI and the contrasting indexes on a quarterly basis. SMODI considers factors influencing soil moisture distribution and retention and the water stress thresholds that plants have evolved to withstand during drought periods. Consequently, this integrated approach enhances the assessment of agricultural drought by relying on pertinent physical processes. SMODI identified extremely dry, severe, moderate and normal drought 5 %, 3 %, 20 % and 72 % respectively conditions in areas characterized by Entisols, Inceptisols, and Andisols, where rice and fruit crops and pasturelands are cultivated. This study analyzed the meteorological and hydrological droughts in a typical basin of the Brazilian semiarid region from 1994 to 2016. In recent decades, this region has faced prolonged and severe droughts, leading to marked reductions in agricultural productivity and significant challenges to food security and water availability. The datasets employed included a digital elevation model, land use and cover data, soil characteristics, climatic data (temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, humidity, and precipitation), runoff data, images from the MODIS/TERRA and AQUA sensors (MOD09A1 and MODY09A1 products), and soil water content. A variety of methods and products were used to study these droughts: the meteorological drought was analyzed using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) derived from observed precipitation data, while the hydrological drought was assessed using the Standardized Soil Index (SSI), the Nonparametric Multivariate Standardized Drought Index (NMSDI), and the Parametric Multivariate Standardized Drought Index (PMSDI). These indices were determined using water balance components, including streamflow and soil water content, from the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, and evapotranspiration data from the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL). The findings indicate that the methodology effectively identified variations in water dynamics and drought periods in a headwater basin within Brazil's semiarid region, suggesting potential applicability in other semiarid areas. Identifying droughts and accurately evaluating drought impacts on vegetation growth are crucial to understanding the terrestrial carbon balance across China. However, few studies have identified the critical drought thresholds that impact China's vegetation growth, leading to large uncertainty in assessing the ecological consequences of droughts. In this study, we utilize gridded surface soil moisture data and satellite-observed normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to assess vegetation response to droughts in China during 2001-2018. Based on the nonlinear relationship between changing drought stress and the coincident anomalies of NDVI during the growing season, we derive the spatial patterns of satellite-based drought thresholds (T SM ) that impact vegetation growth in China via a framework for detecting drought thresholds combining the methods of feature extraction, coincidence analysis, and piecewise linear regression. The T SM values represent percentile-based drought threshold levels, with smaller T SM values corresponding to more negative anomalies of soil moisture. On average, T SM is at the 8.7th percentile and detectable in 64.4% of China's vegetated lands, with lower values in North China and Jianghan Plain and higher values in the Inner Mongolia Plateau. Furthermore, T SM for forests is commonly lower than that for grasslands. We also find that agricultural irrigation modifies the drought thresholds for croplands in the Sichuan Basin. For future projections, Earth System Models predict that more regions in China will face an increasing risk for ecological drought, and the Hexi Corridor-Hetao Plain and Shandong Peninsula will become hotspots of ecological drought. Recovery time, the time it takes for ecosystems to return to normal states after experiencing droughts, is critical for assessing the response of ecosystems to droughts; however, the spatial dominant factors determining recovery time are poorly understood. We identify the global patterns of terrestrial ecosystem recovery time based on remote sensed vegetation indices, analyse the affecting factors of recovery time using random forest regression model, and determine the spatial distribution of the dominant factors of recovery time based on partial correlation. The results show that the global average recovery time is approximately 3.3 months, and that the longest recovery time occurs in mid-latitude drylands. Analysis of affecting factors of recovery time suggests that the most important environmental factor affecting recovery time is soil moisture during the recovery period, followed by temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Recovery time shortens with increasing soil moisture and prolongs with increasing VPD; however, the response of recovery time to temperature is nonmonotonic, with colder or hotter temperatures leading to longer recovery time. Soil moisture dominates the drought recovery time over 58.4% of the assessed land area, mostly in the mid-latitudes. The concern is that soil moisture is projected to decline in more than 65% regions in the future, which will lengthen the drought recovery time and exacerbate drought impacts on terrestrial ecosystems, especially in southwestern United States, the Mediterranean region and southern Africa. Vegetation response to soil and atmospheric drought has raised extensively controversy, however, the relative contributions of soil drought, atmospheric drought, and their compound droughts on global vegetation growth remain unclear. Combining the changes in soil moisture (SM), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and vegetation growth (normalized difference vegetation index [NDVI]) during 1982-2015, here we evaluated the trends of these three drought types and quantified their impacts on global NDVI. We found that global VPD has increased 0.22 ± 0.05 kPa·decade -1 during 1982-2015, and this trend was doubled after 1996 (0.32 ± 0.16 kPa·decade -1 ) than before 1996 (0.16 ± 0.15 kPa·decade -1 ). Regions with large increase in VPD trend generally accompanied with decreasing trend in SM, leading to a widespread increasing trend in compound droughts across 37.62% land areas. We further found compound droughts dominated the vegetation browning since late 1990s, contributing to a declined NDVI of 64.56%. Earth system models agree with the dominant role of compound droughts on vegetation growth, but their negative magnitudes are considerably underestimated, with half of the observed results (34.48%). The potential effects of climate change on plant reproductive phenology include asynchronies with pollinators and reductions in plant fitness, leading to extinction and loss of ecosystem function. In particular, plant phenology is sensitive to extreme weather events, which are occurring with increasing severity and frequency in recent decades and are linked to anthropogenic climate change and shifts in atmospheric circulation. For 15 plant species in a Venezuelan cloud forest, we documented dramatic changes in monthly flower and fruit community composition over a 35-year time series, from 1983 to 2017, and these changes were linked directly to higher temperatures, lower precipitation, and decreased soil water availability. The patterns documented here do not mirror trends in temperate zones but corroborate results from the Asian tropics. Tropical forest function is of global significance to climate change responses, and critically determined by water availability patterns. Groundwater is tightly related to soil water through the water table depth (WT), but historically neglected in ecological studies. Shallow WT forests (WT < 5 m) are underrepresented in forest research networks and absent in eddy flux measurements, although they represent c. 50% of the Amazon and are expected to respond differently to global-change-related droughts. We review WT patterns and consequences for plants, emerging results, and advance a conceptual model integrating environment and trait distributions to predict climate change effects. Shallow WT forests have a distinct species composition, with more resource-acquisitive and hydrologically vulnerable trees, shorter canopies and lower biomass than deep WT forests. During 'normal' climatic years, shallow WT forests have higher mortality and lower productivity than deep WT forests, but during moderate droughts mortality is buffered and productivity increases. However, during severe drought, shallow WT forests may be more sensitive due to shallow roots and drought-intolerant traits. Our evidence supports the hypothesis of neglected shallow WT forests being resilient to moderate drought, challenging the prevailing view of widespread negative effects of climate change on Amazonian forests that ignores WT gradients, but predicts they could collapse under very strong droughts., (© 2022 The Authors. Pistacia atlantica Desf. (Beneh) is an important woody species that has been facing significant challenges to its natural regeneration and reforestation in Iran. This study investigates the interaction of soil moisture and shade on growth, chemical contents, and morphological and physiological characteristics of Beneh saplings. One-year-old Beneh saplings were treated with varying amounts of soil moisture (20, 50, and 100% of field capacity) and shade (0, 30, and 50% of full sunlight) in a split-plot experiment of a randomized complete block design in semiarid conditions of the Alborz Research Station of the Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands (RIFR) in Iran. The results indicate that soil moisture significantly affects the water content of the leaf, total chlorophyll, proline content, activity of catalase enzyme, leaf dry biomass, leaflet area, and dry stem biomass in the leaf. Shade significantly affected total chlorophyll, catalase enzyme activity, specific leaflet area, relative water content of the leaf, proline content, dry root biomass, and leaflet area. The interaction of shade and soil moisture significantly affected seedling height, catalase enzyme activity, specific leaflet area, and nitrogen and potassium content of the leaf. Shade moderates the stress of drought on Beneh saplings, but shading of Beneh saplings is not recommended in conditions where there is no concern about soil moisture. Earth's ecosystems are increasingly threatened by "hot drought," which occurs when hot air temperatures coincide with precipitation deficits, intensifying the hydrological, physiological, and ecological effects of drought by enhancing evaporative losses of soil moisture (SM) and increasing plant stress due to higher vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Drought-induced reductions in gross primary production (GPP) exert a major influence on the terrestrial carbon sink, but the extent to which hotter and atmospherically drier conditions will amplify the effects of precipitation deficits on Earth's carbon cycle remains largely unknown. During summer and autumn 2020, the U.S. Southwest experienced one of the most intense hot droughts on record, with record-low precipitation and record-high air temperature and VPD across the region. Here, we use this natural experiment to evaluate the effects of hot drought on GPP and further decompose those negative GPP anomalies into their constituent meteorological and hydrological drivers. We found a 122 Tg C (>25%) reduction in GPP below the 2015-2019 mean, by far the lowest regional GPP over the Soil Moisture Active Passive satellite record. Roughly half of the estimated GPP loss was attributable to low SM (likely a combination of record-low precipitation and warming-enhanced evaporative depletion), but record-breaking VPD amplified the reduction of GPP, contributing roughly 40% of the GPP anomaly. Both air temperature and VPD are very likely to continue increasing over the next century, likely leading to more frequent and intense hot droughts and substantially enhancing drought-induced GPP reductions., (© 2022 The Authors. With global climate change, frequent flash droughts have critically impacted vegetation productivity. Based on the new definition on flash drought onset and duration, the temporal and spatial evolution patterns of the flash drought over the Hai River Basin (HRB) was analysed. Among the events, the flash drought in 2019 lasted for 40 days, from the day of the year (DOY) 120 to DOY160, which was the strongest and mainly concentrated in the south-eastern part of the basin. Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and vegetation indices were used to explore the responses of different vegetation types to this flash drought. Compared to forest and grassland, the SIF and SIFyield (SIF normalized by the absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR)) values of cropland were more sensitive to water losses and replenishment. By analysing different radiation conditions which would affect SIF and photosynthesis, low radiation was found altering the linear relationship between fluorescence and photosynthesis. The flash drought event caused gross primary productivity (GPP) losses in 40% of the basin and the maximum loss reached 0.16 kg C m -2 , indicating that the impact of this flash drought on vegetation productivity was quite serious. Drought is an affliction for a region that primarily depends on agriculture as economic activity. Commonly monitoring and characterizing of drought is performed by only analyzing the meteorological aspect, assuming precipitation as the primary source of water. However, in riverine Bangladesh, this can lead to an erroneous conclusion, as there is a multitude of available water sources. Consequently, in this study, vegetation condition (Standard Vegetation Index), soil moisture (Soil Moisture Index), and precipitation (Standard Precipitation Index) are separately investigated from 2003 to 2019, in the Northwestern Teesta floodplain. Subsequently, statistical regression analysis is performed to determine the relationships between different aspects of drought. In addition, information obtained from field visits and expert opinions has also been assimilated. Analysis of vegetation and soil moisture condition presents a progressively improving scenario. However, SPI shows an incessant decline in meteorological drought conditions, especially after 2007. Evidently, regression analysis does not provide any indication of an interrelationship between the studied agricultural and meteorological parameters. Presumably, this absence is instigated because the study area is highly irrigated as the groundwater table is suitably near the surface and the existence of nearby Teesta river allows for the utilization of surface water. Moreover, the cropping pattern is shifting toward crops that require much less water and to places where soil moisture is scarce. Thus, this study addresses the gap in knowledge regarding the nature of agricultural drought and the dynamics of different aspects of drought which will be invaluable for the water management and agricultural policy in the study area as well as other regions with a similar backdrop.

In summer 2018, Europe experienced a record drought, but it remains unknown how the drought affected ecosystem carbon dynamics. Using observations from 34 eddy covariance sites in different biomes across Europe, we studied the sensitivity of gross primary productivity (GPP) to environmental drivers during the summer drought of 2018 versus the reference summer of 2016. We found a greater drought-induced decline of summer GPP in grasslands (-38%) than in forests (-10%), which coincided with reduced evapotranspiration and soil water content (SWC). As compared to the 'normal year' of 2016, GPP in different ecosystems exhibited more negative sensitivity to summer air temperature (Ta) but stronger positive sensitivity to SWC during summer drought in 2018, that is, a stronger reduction of GPP with soil moisture deficit. We found larger negative effects of Ta and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) but a lower positive effect of photosynthetic photon flux density on GPP in 2018 compared to 2016, which contributed to reduced summer GPP in 2018. Our results demonstrate that high temperature-induced increases in VPD and decreases in SWC aggravated drought impacts on GPP. Dryland ecosystems may be especially vulnerable to expected 21st century increases in temperature and aridity because they are tightly controlled by moisture availability. However, climate impact assessments in drylands are difficult because ecological dynamics are dictated by drought conditions that are difficult to define and complex to estimate from climate conditions alone. In addition, precipitation projections vary substantially among climate models, enhancing variation in overall trajectories for aridity. Here, we constrain this uncertainty by utilizing an ecosystem water balance model to quantify drought conditions with recognized ecological importance, and by identifying changes in ecological drought conditions that are robust among climate models, defined here as when >90% of models agree in the direction of change. Despite limited evidence for robust changes in precipitation, changes in ecological drought are robust over large portions of drylands in the United States and Canada. Our results suggest strong regional differences in long-term drought trajectories, epitomized by chronic drought increases in southern areas, notably the Upper Gila Mountains and South-Central Semi-arid Prairies, and decreases in the north, particularly portions of the Temperate and West-Central Semi-arid Prairies. However, we also found that exposure to hot-dry stress is increasing faster than mean annual temperature over most of these drylands, and those increases are greatest in northern areas. Robust shifts in seasonal drought are most apparent during the cool season; when soil water availability is projected to increase in northern regions and decrease in southern regions. The implications of these robust drought trajectories for ecosystems will vary geographically, and these results provide useful insights about the impact of climate change on these dryland ecosystems. Past research suggests climate change will cause the climate envelopes of various tree species to shift to higher latitudes and can lead to a northward migration of trees. However, the success and scope of the migration are likely affected by factors that are not contained in the climate envelope, such as photoperiod and interactive effects of multiple environmental factors, and these effects are currently not well understood. In this study, we investigated the interactive effects of CO2 concentrations ([CO2]), photoperiod and soil moisture on the morphological and physiological traits of Populus tremuloides Michx. We grew seedlings under two levels of [CO2] (ambient [CO2] (AC) 400 vs elevated [CO2] (EC) 1000 μmol mol-1), four photoperiod regimes (growing season photoperiods at 48 (seed origin), 52, 55 and 58°N latitude) and two soil moisture regimes (high soil moisture (HSM) vs low soil moisture (LSM), -2 MPa) for two growing seasons in greenhouses. Both morphological and physiological responses were observed. Low soil moisture reduced leaf size, total leaf area and height growth by 33, 46 and 12%, respectively, and increased root/shoot ratio by 20%. The smaller leaf area and increased root/shoot ratio allowed the seedlings in LSM to maintain higher the maximum rate of Rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax) and the maximum rate of electron transport for RuBP regeneration (Jmax) than control seedlings (55 and 83% higher in July, 52 and 70% in August, respectively). Photoperiod and [CO2] modified responses to LSM and LSM altered responses to photoperiod and [CO2], e.g., the August photosynthetic rate was 44% higher in LSM than in HSM under EC but no such a difference existed under AC. The increase in Vcmax and Jmax in response to LSM varied with photoperiod (Vcmax: 36% at 52°N, 22% at 55°N, 47% at 58°N; Jmax: 29% at 52°N, 21% at 55°N, 45% at 58°N). Stomatal conductance and its reduction in response to LSM declined with increasing photoperiod, which can have significant implications for soil moisture effect on northward migration. With the economic growth, continuous global environment deterioration, and increasingly serious water resources shortage, droughts have become more and more serious and produced great impacts on both the regional ecology and sustainable economic development. This paper has established the "green, blue, yellow, orange, and red lights" as the early warning grades for agricultural droughts. By using the two influencing factors, namely precipitation and soil moisture, this paper has established the drought assessment index evaluation model using weighted coupling method. It has carried out the analogue simulation of the early drought warning based on the Jinghui Channel's 2013 water source situations. The soil moisture in January and February is relatively ideal, and the actual early drought warning is expressed by the "green light". The soil moisture deficit is comparatively serious in March, but the situation concerning water inflow is ideal with the "green light". Actually, the early warning signal is basically consistent with the soil moisture drought degree between April and August. The actual early warning is expressed by the "green light" as well, but the soil moisture is not so ideal, however, this is the seeding time of the winter wheat so the lack of soil moisture has no impact on the crops output. In November and December, the winter wheat is at the growth and development stage and does not need much moisture. At this stage, the soil moisture is relatively poor. By integrating the time effects into the early drought warning system, this paper provides administrators of irrigation areas with a scientific decision-making based on the drought control measures.

Droughts and heatwaves have been and will continue to bring large risks to terrestrial ecosystems. However, the understanding of how plants respond to drought and heatwave over broad spatial scales is still limited. In this paper, we use the 2009/2010 drought in Yunnan and the 2013 heatwave over southern China as case studies to investigate the potential of using satellite-observed solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) to monitor vegetation responses to drought and heatwave over broad spatial scales. The 2009/2010 drought onset follows a strong soil moisture deficit due to the yearlong below-normal precipitation in Yunnan from the autumn of 2009 to the spring of 2010. In the summer of 2013, southern China experienced the strongest heatwave due to the sudden temperature increase and rainfall deficit. The results show that SIF can reasonably capture the spatial and temporal dynamics of drought and heatwave development, as indicated by the large reduction in fluorescence yield (SIF yield ). Moreover, SIF yield demonstrates a significant reduction and earlier response than traditional vegetation indices (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) during the early stages of drought and heatwave events. For both study areas, the spatial and temporal correlation analysis demonstrates that the SIF yield anomalies are more sensitive to a high vapor pressure deficit (VPD) than low soil moisture. Pastures and wood-pastures, livestock grazing systems where scattered trees and shrubs co-occur, are essential for global food supply. The grazing value of these systems, which is closely related to soil moisture, is increasingly threatened by changes in climate variability and vegetation structure, mainly by shrub encroachment. However, it remains relatively unexplored to what extent the concurrent effect of climate change and shrub encroachment will affect the exposure to drought stress of Mediterranean wood-pastures - defined as a period where soil water availability drops below 40%. Here we combined soil moisture measurements and a process-based water balance model to assess the effect of shrubs, a shallow- and a deep-rooted, on soil moisture under current (2009-2012) and future weather (i.e. RCP4.5 and RCP8.5). Soil moisture was measured and predicted in six sites, three for each type of shrub, where two adjacent plots were selected, a control and an encroached plot. During 2009-2012, encroached plots had more extended droughts (29 and 48 days longer in sites encroached with shallow- and deep-rooted shrubs, respectively) and higher usage of deep water (~30%) than control plots. Under future climatic projections, our results show a consistent increase in the duration, an earlier onset of drought and higher reliance on shallow water with time, particularly under the worst climatic scenario. Encroached plots showed higher inter-annual variability than control plots, particularly in plots encroached with the deep-rooted shrub. Our results indicate that the presence of shrubs magnify the effect of climate. This suggests a likely increase in the exposure of Mediterranean wood-pastures to drought if processes of shrub encroachment persist in a context of climatic changes where earlier and more prolonged droughts will become more frequent., (Copyright © 2019. The accumulation of arsenic (As) in rice grain is a public health concern since As is toxic to humans; in particular, inorganic As can cause many chronic diseases including cancer. Rice crops are prone to accumulating As, in part, due to the anaerobic soil conditions triggered by the traditional continuously flooded irrigation practice. The objective of this study was to determine how the severity and the timing (i.e. crop stage) of a single soil drying period impact total As concentration and As speciation within the rice (both white and brown) grain, compared to a continuously flooded (CF) control. Drying the soil until the perched water table reached 15 cm below the soil surface (same severity as in the "Safe Alternate Wetting and Drying"), which in this study corresponded to a soil (0-15 cm) water potential of ~0, did not decrease grain As concentrations, regardless of timing. Drying the soil to Medium Severity [MS: soil (0-15 cm) water potential of -71 kPa] or High Severity [HS: soil (0-15 cm) water potential of -154 kPa] decreased total As by 41-61%. However, inorganic As did not always decrease because the severity and the timing of soil drying affected As speciation within the grain. Overall, the soil had to be dried to HS and/or late in the growing season (i.e., at booting or heading instead of at panicle initiation) to decrease inorganic As concentration in the rice grain. This study indicates that the imposition of a single soil drying period within the growing season can mitigate As accumulation in rice grain, but it depends on the severity and timing of the drying period. Climate change will alter global precipitation patterns, making it increasingly important that we understand how ecosystems will be impacted by more frequent and severe droughts. Yet most drought studies examine a single, within-season drought, and we know relatively little about the impacts of multiple droughts that occur within a single growing season. This distinction is important because many plant species are able to acclimate physiologically, such that the effects of multiple droughts on ecosystem function deviate significantly from the effects of cumulative, independent droughts. Unfortunately, we know relatively little about the ability of dominant species to acclimate to drought in drought-sensitive ecosystems like semi-arid grasslands. Here, we tested for physiological acclimation to multiple drought events in two dominant shortgrass steppe species: Bouteloua gracilis (C 4 ) and Elymus elymoides (C 3 ). Neither species exhibited physiological acclimation to drought; leaf water potential, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis rates were all similarly affected by a single, late period drought and a second, late period drought. Biomass was lowest in plants exposed to two droughts, but this is likely due to the cumulative effects of both an early and late period drought. Our results suggest that late period droughts do exert weaker effects on biomass production of two dominant shortgrass species, but that the weaker effects are due to ontogenetic changes in plant physiology as opposed to physiological acclimation against multiple droughts. As a consequence, current ecosystem models that incorporate grass phenology and seasonal physiology should provide accurate predictions of primary production under future climates.

Intensifying drought is increasingly linked to global forest diebacks. Improved understanding of drought impacts on individual trees has provided limited insight into drought vulnerability in part because tree moisture access and depletion is difficult to quantify. In forests, moisture reservoir depletion occurs through water use by the trees themselves. Here, we show that drought impacts on tree fitness and demographic performance can be predicted by tracking the moisture reservoir available to trees as a mass balance, estimated in a hierarchical state-space framework. We apply this model to multiple seasonal droughts with tree transpiration measurements to demonstrate how species and size differences modulate moisture availability across landscapes. The depletion of individual moisture reservoirs can be tracked over the course of droughts and linked to biomass growth and reproductive output. The 2015/2016 El Niño event caused severe changes in precipitation across the tropics. This impacted surface hydrology, such as river run-off and soil moisture availability, thereby triggering reductions in gross primary production (GPP). Many biosphere models lack the detailed hydrological component required to accurately quantify anomalies in surface hydrology and GPP during droughts in tropical regions. Here, we take the novel approach of coupling the biosphere model SiBCASA with the advanced hydrological model PCR-GLOBWB to attempt such a quantification across the Amazon basin during the drought in 2015/2016. We calculate 30-40% reduced river discharge in the Amazon starting in October 2015, lagging behind the precipitation anomaly by approximately one month and in good agreement with river gauge observations. Soil moisture shows distinctly asymmetrical spatial anomalies with large reductions across the north-eastern part of the basin, which persisted into the following dry season. This added to drought stress in vegetation, already present owing to vapour pressure deficits at the leaf, resulting in a loss of GPP of 0.95 (0.69 to 1.20) PgC between October 2015 and March 2016 compared with the 2007-2014 average. Only 11% (10-12%) of the reduction in GPP was found in the (wetter) north-western part of the basin, whereas the north-eastern and southern regions were affected more strongly, with 56% (54-56%) and 33% (31-33%) of the total, respectively. As climate change continues, forest vulnerability to droughts and heatwaves is increasing, but vulnerability varies regionally and locally through landscape position. Also, most models used in forecasting forest responses to heat and drought do not incorporate relevant spatial processes. In order to improve spatial predictions of tree vulnerability, we employed a nonlinear stochastic model of soil moisture dynamics accounting for landscape differences in aspect, topography and soils. Across a watershed in central Texas we modeled dynamic water stress for a dominant tree species, Juniperus ashei, and projected future dynamic water stress through the 21 st century. Modeled dynamic water stress tracked spatial patterns of remotely sensed drought-induced canopy loss. Accuracy in predicting drought-impacted stands increased from 60%, accounting for spatially variable soil conditions, to 72% when also including lateral redistribution of water and radiation/temperature effects attributable to aspect. Our analysis also suggests that dynamic water stress will increase through the 21 st century, with trees persisting at only selected microsites. Favorable microsites/refugia may exist across a landscape where trees can persist; however, if future droughts are too severe, the buffering capacity of an heterogeneous landscape could be overwhelmed. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has been extensively used in continuous and long-term drought monitoring over large-scale, but with late response to drought-related changes of photosynthesis. Instead, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is more closely related to photosynthesis and thus is proposed to track the impacts of drought on vegetation growth. However, the detailed difference between SIF and NDVI in responding to drought has not been thoroughly explored. Here we present continuous ground measurements of NDVI and SIF at 760nm over four plots of wheat with different intensities of drought (well-watered treatment, moderate drought, severe drought and extreme drought). The average values of seasonal SIF were significantly lower under severe drought and extreme drought, while NDVI means only showed significant reduction in extreme drought. In the seasonal patterns, daily SIF could clearly separate the difference of drought gradient, while the difference of daily NDVI was clearer in the end of the field campaign. Daily SIF also significantly and positively correlated with soil moisture, indicating that SIF could be considered as an estimator of soil moisture to detect the information about agricultural drought. Furthermore, in extreme drought plot, the correlation of SIF and soil moisture was higher than that of NDVI and soil moisture in a shorter time lag (<15-day) but weaker in a longer time lag (longer than 30-day). The relationships of growth parameters with SIF and NDVI were further analyzed, showing a saturation of NDVI and unsaturation of SIF at high values of leaf area index and relative water content. These results suggested that SIF is better fit in early drought monitoring, especially over closure canopy, while NDVI is more feasible when drought lasted over a long time scale. Anecdotal data in the past have suggested that the effect of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), on maize yield is greater under drought and the effect of drought is greater under rootworm infestations, but no field experiments have controlled both moisture and rootworm levels. Field studies were conducted in 2012, 2013, and 2014 with treatments in a factorial arrangement of western corn rootworm infestation levels, and maize hybrids (with and without tolerance to drought and rootworm feeding). The experiment was repeated under well-watered and drought conditions in adjacent plots. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance data suggested significant plant stress was achieved in the drought plots toward the end of the season each year and maize hybrids only played a minor role. In particular, in 2012 and 2013 yield was dramatically lower for the drought experiment than for the well-watered experiment. However, the impacts of rootworm infestation level and maize hybrids on water potential, stomatal conductance, and yield were variable across years and between experiments. In fact, the only year that the main effect of rootworm infestation levels significantly impacted yield was in 2014, when an extremely high infestation level was added and this was only for the well-watered portion of the experiment. In anticipation of more severe summer droughts, forestry in temperate Europe is searching for drought-resistant ecotypes of native tree species that might maintain ecosystem services in the future. We investigated how spring precipitation and soil conditions interact with summer drought and affect the establishment of conifer seedlings from different climatic origin. Emergence, establishment and subsequent performance of seedlings originating from autochthonous, Central Alpine, continental Eastern European, and Mediterranean Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies populations were studied in the dry Alpine Rhine valley, Switzerland, at three sites with differing soil water holding capacities and in 3 years with contrasting weather conditions. In addition to this natural inter-annual variation, precipitation was manipulated within sites with throughfall reduction roofs. Seedling establishment and growth were principally affected by the spring weather in the year of emergence. In years with average to positive spring water balance, seedlings grown at the site with the highest water holding capacity had 2-5 times more aboveground biomass than seedlings grown at sites with less favourable soils. Effects of seed origin were marginal and only detectable at the drier sites: contrary to our expectations, seedlings from the Central Alpine Rhone valley, where the climatic spring water deficit is large, outperformed those from the Mediterranean. Consequently, plantation of non-native populations from dryer origin will mitigate the effects of increased summer drought at driest sites only, while the inter-annual variability of spring precipitation will continue to enable temperate conifers to regenerate on a wide range of forest soils independent of seed origin.

Fire may cause significant alterations in soil properties. Post-fire soil dynamics can vary depending, among other factors, on rainfall patterns. However, little is known regarding variations in response to post-fire drought. This is relevant in arid and semiarid areas with poor soils, like much of the western Mediterranean. Furthermore, climate change projections in such areas anticipate reduced precipitation and longer annual drought periods, together with an increase in fire severity and frequency. This research evaluates the effects of experimental drought after fire on soil dynamics of a Cistus-Erica shrubland (Central Spain). A replicated (n=4) field experiment was conducted in which the total rainfall and its patterns were manipulated by means of a rain-out shelters and irrigation system. The treatments were: environmental control (natural rainfall), historical control (average rainfall, 2months drought), moderate drought (25% reduction of historical control, 5months drought) and severe drought (45% reduction, 7months drought). After one growing season under these rainfall treatments, the plots were burned. One set of unburned plots under natural rainfall served as an additional control. Soils were collected seasonally. Fire increased soil P and N availability. Post-fire drought treatments reduced available soil P but increased N concentration (mainly nitrate). Fire reduced available K irrespective of drought treatments. Fire reduced enzyme activities and carbon mineralization rate, a reduction that was higher in post-fire drought-treated soils. Fire decreased soil microbial biomass and the proportion of fungi, while that of actinomycetes increased. Post-fire drought decreased soil total microbial biomass and fungi, with bacteria becoming more abundant. Small differences in the sensitivity of stomatal conductance to light intensity on leaf surfaces may lead to large differences in total canopy transpiration (EC) with increasing canopy leaf area (L). Typically, the increase of L would more than compensate for the decrease of transpiration per unit of leaf area (EL), resulting in concurrent increase of EC. However, highly shade-intolerant species, such as Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr., may be so sensitive to increased shading that such compensation is not complete. We hypothesized that in such a stand, windfall-induced spatial variation at a decameter scale would result in greatly reduced EL in patches of high L leading to lower EC than low competition patches of sparse canopy. We further hypothesized that quicker extraction of soil moisture in patches of lower competition will result in earlier onset of drought symptoms in these patches. Thus, patches of low L will transition from light to soil moisture as the factor dominating EL. This process should progressively homogenize EC in the stand even as the variation of soil moisture is increasing. We tested the hypotheses utilizing sap flux of nine trees, and associated environmental and stand variables. The results were consistent with only some of the expectations. Under non-limiting soil moisture, EL was very sensitive to the spatial variation of L, decreasing sharply with increasing L and associated decrease of mean light intensity on leaf surfaces. Thus, under the conditions of ample soil moisture maximum EC decreased with increasing patch-scale L. Annual EC and biomass production also decreased with L, albeit more weakly. Furthermore, variation of EC among patches decreased as average stand soil moisture declined between rain events. However, contrary to expectation, high L plots which transpired less showed a greater EL sensitivity to decreasing stand-scale soil moisture, suggesting a different mechanism than simple control by decreasing soil moisture. We offer potential explanations to the observed phenomenon. Our results demonstrate that spatial variation of L at decameter scale, even within relatively homogeneous, single-species, even-aged stands, can produce large variation of transpiration, soil moisture and biomass production and should be considered in 1-D soil-plant-atmosphere models., (© The Author 2015. Despite decades of research, how climate warming alters the global flux of soil respiration is still poorly characterized. Here, we use meta-analysis to synthesize 202 soil respiration datasets from 50 ecosystem warming experiments across multiple terrestrial ecosystems. We found that, on average, warming by 2 °C increased soil respiration by 12% during the early warming years, but warming-induced drought partially offset this effect. More significantly, the two components of soil respiration, heterotrophic respiration and autotrophic respiration showed distinct responses. The warming effect on autotrophic respiration was not statistically detectable during the early warming years, but nonetheless decreased with treatment duration. In contrast, warming by 2 °C increased heterotrophic respiration by an average of 21%, and this stimulation remained stable over the warming duration. This result challenged the assumption that microbial activity would acclimate to the rising temperature. Together, our findings demonstrate that distinguishing heterotrophic respiration and autotrophic respiration would allow us better understand and predict the long-term response of soil respiration to warming. Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) is a pioneer species, highly competitive due to exceptional resistance to drought. To investigate the stress resistance in the first and second year of development, a steady-state drought experiment was implemented. Photosynthesis (A(net)), stomatal conductance and transpiration (E) were measured on three different sampling dates together with phloem soluble sugars, amino acids and non-structural proteins. Needle ascorbic acid (AsA) and reactive oxygen species were measured to evaluate the seedlings' drought stress condition in the final sampling. Drought impaired A(net) and E by 35 and 31%, respectively, and increased AsA levels up to 10-fold, without significant impact on the phloem metabolites. Phloem sugars related to temperature fluctuations rather than soil moisture and did not relate closely to A(net) levels. Sugars and proteins decreased between the second and third sampling date by 56 and 61%, respectively, and the ratio of sugars to amino acids decreased between the first and third sampling by 81%, while A(net) and water-use efficiency (A(net)/E) decreased only in the older seedlings. Although gas exchange was higher in the older seedlings, ascorbic acid and phloem metabolites were higher in the younger seedlings. It was concluded that the drought stress responses depended significantly on developmental stage, and research on the physiology of Aleppo pine regeneration should focus more on temperature conditions and the duration of drought than its severity.

Flash droughts, characterized by rapid onset and development, present significant challenges to agriculture and climate mitigation strategies. Operational drought monitoring systems, based on precipitation, soil moisture deficits, or temperature anomalies, often fall short in timely detection of these events, underscoring the need for customized identification and monitoring indices that account for the rapidity of flash drought onset. Recognizing this need, this paper introduces a global flash drought inventory from 1990 to 2021 derived using the Soil Moisture Volatility Index (SMVI). Our work expands the application of the SMVI methodology, previously focused on the United States, to a global scale, providing a tool for understanding and predicting these rapidly developing phenomena. The dataset encompasses detailed event characteristics, including onset, duration, and severity, across diverse climate zones. By integrating atmospheric variables through their impact on soil moisture, the inventory offers a platform for analyzing the drivers and impacts of flash droughts, and serves as a large, consistent dataset for use in training and evaluating flash drought prediction models. Drought stress has serious effects on the growth and yield of wheat in both productivity and quality and is an abiotic factor. Traditional methods of crop drought stress monitoring have some deficits. This work has been conducted in order to enhance these conventional methods by proposing a new deep learning approach. This paper has presented a deep learning-based model customized for monitoring drought stress in winter wheat during the critical growth stages. Drought-afflicted winter wheat images were captured at three crucial phases: rising–jointing, heading–flowering, and flowering–maturity. These images are correlated against soil moisture data to construct a comprehensive dataset. DenseNet121 was chosen as the network model since it extracts features from images relating to phenotypes. Several factors, like training methods, learning rate adjustment, and addition of the attention mechanism, are optimized in eight sets of experiments. This provided the final DenseNet-121 model with an average recognition accuracy of 94.67% on the test set, which means that monitoring drought stress during wheat growth's key periods is feasible and effective. This study uses Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis to examine the scaling behavior and spatiotemporal variability of drought indicators. We employ two hybrid drought indicators—the GRACE Root Zone Soil Moisture Percentile (SMI) and Evaporative Demand Drought Index (EDDI)—to elucidate agricultural drought characteristics, and we quantify meteorological drought using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). Our investigation was carried out in the United States in the California and Mississippi watersheds, each characterized by distinct agricultural climate conditions and planting systems. The changes in drought indicators exhibit multifractality primarily derived from the long-term memory embedded within the time series. Spatially, the increment sequence of SPI displays pronounced dependence in almost all areas. Specifically, the changes in SPI demonstrate persistence, as the Hurst exponents changed from 0.53 to 0.58 in California, revealing the possibility of a degree of trend continuation (albeit, not very strong) in the future. A regular summary cannot be obtained for Mississippi, since the Hurst exponent ranges from 0.46 to 0.51 for the increment sequence of SPI in that watershed. However, the increment sequences for the agricultural drought indicators exhibit obvious short-term persistence (anti-persistence), indicating that future drought trends may be discontinuous. The variations in the strength of anti-persistence among agricultural drought indicators can be attributed to geographical differences, diverse irrigation strategies, and varying cropping systems. No significant evolution pattern is evident for the scaling structure of drought processes due to minor variations in external controlling factors, such as rainfall and temperature, within the drought process. Flash drought (FD) has attracted much attention due to its severe stress on vegetation ecosystems. Yet to date, the impacts of FD on vegetation ecosystems in different regions have not been fully evaluated and explored, especially for ecologically fragile areas. In this study, we identified the FD events in the Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2023 based on the attenuation rate in soil moisture percentile over time. The evolution process of FD, the driving roles of meteorological conditions and the responses of different vegetation types to FD were explored by vegetation indicators such as solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), SIFyield, SIF-RCI, etc. The results showed that FD events were predominantly concentrated in wetter areas with dense vegetation, with the highest frequency being 29. Meteorological factors contributed differently to the occurrence and development of FD. The responses of vegetation to FD were not only related to vegetation types (cropland was more sensitive to FD than forest and grassland) but were also significantly influenced by background climate. The SIFyield anomaly of vegetation was more sensitive than SIF anomaly and SIF-RCI. The results advance our understanding of the formation mechanisms of FD and facilitate the exploration of vegetative photosynthetic responses to FD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants exhibit an array of drought responses and adaptations, where the trade-off between water loss and CO2 uptake for growth is mediated by regulation of stomatal aperture in response to soil water content (SWC), among other factors. For crop yield stability, the question is how drought timing and response patterns relate to post-drought growth resilience and vigor. We earlier identified, in a few reference varieties of barley that differed by the SWC at which transpiration was curtailed, two divergent water use strategies: water-saving ("isohydric") and water-spending ("anisohydric"). We proposed that an isohydric strategy may reduce risk from spring droughts in climates where the probability of precipitation increases during the growing season, whereas the anisohydric is consistent with environments having terminal droughts, or with those where dry periods are short and not seasonally progressive. Here, we have examined drought response physiology in an 81-line barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) diversity set that spans 20th century European breeding and identified several lines with a third, dynamic strategy. We found a strong positive correlation between vigor and transpiration, the dynamic group being highest for both. However, these lines curtailed daily transpiration at a higher SWC than the isohydric group. While the dynamic lines, particularly cv Hydrogen and Baronesse, were not the most resilient in terms of restoring initial growth rates, their strong initial vigor and high return to initial transpiration rates meant that their growth nevertheless surpassed more resilient lines during recovery from drought. The agro-phenological summary of the spring of 2024 in Spain indicates that the period from January to April was very warm, with rainy months from January to March and very dry in April. There were late frosts at the end of April. Precipitation was abundant overall, but scarce in the coastal regions between northern Almeria and southern Tarragona, as well as in the Canary Islands. The accumulation of cold hours was negative throughout the Iberian-Balearic territory, reflecting the high temperatures of the period. It reports on the scarce rainfall in April and the decrease in soil moisture in various regions of Spain, highlighting intense droughts in Catalonia and eastern Andalusia. Summary: Some plants exhibit dynamic hydraulic regulation, in which the strictness of hydraulic regulation (i.e. iso/anisohydry) changes in response to environmental conditions. However, the environmental controls over iso/anisohydry and the implications of flexible hydraulic regulation for plant productivity remain unknown.In Juniperus osteosperma, a drought‐resistant dryland conifer, we collected a 5‐month growing season time series of in situ, high temporal‐resolution plant water potential (Ψ) and stand gross primary productivity (GPP). We quantified the stringency of hydraulic regulation associated with environmental covariates and evaluated how predawn water potential contributes to empirically predicting carbon uptake.Juniperus osteosperma showed less stringent hydraulic regulation (more anisohydric) after monsoon precipitation pulses, when soil moisture and atmospheric demand were high, and corresponded with GPP pulses. Predawn water potential matched the timing of GPP fluxes and improved estimates of GPP more strongly than soil and/or atmospheric moisture, notably resolving GPP underestimation before vegetation green‐up.Flexible hydraulic regulation appears to allow J. osteosperma to prolong soil water extraction and, therefore, the period of high carbon uptake following monsoon precipitation pulses. Reliable drought prediction should be preceded to prevent damage from potential droughts. In this context, this study developed a hydrological drought prediction method, namely ensemble drought prediction (EDP) to reflect drought-related information under the ensemble streamflow prediction framework. After generating an ensemble of standardized runoff index by converting the ensemble of generated streamflow, the results were adopted as the prior distribution. Then, precipitation forecast and soil moisture were used to update the prior EDP. The EDP + A model included the precipitation forecast with the PDF-ratio method, and the observed soil moisture index was reflected in the former EDP and EDP + A via Bayes' theorem, resulting in the EDP + S and EDP + AS models. Eight basins in Korea with more than 30 years of observation data were applied with the proposed methodology. As a result, the overall performance of the four EDP models yielded improved results than the climatological prediction. Moreover, reflecting soil moisture yielded improved evaluation metrics during short-term drought predictions, and in basins with larger drainage areas. The summer of 2022 was particularly notable for the prolonged and extensive hot and dry conditions experienced across the UK. The resultant 2022 drought had widespread impacts and prompted much discussion about the continuing vulnerability of the UK to drought, particularly in the context of anthropogenic warming. Here, we briefly describe the evolution of the drought before focusing on the severity of rainfall, river flow, soil moisture and groundwater level deficits from summer 2022, placing the event into a historical context and addressing the impacts of the drought. Flash droughts are rapidly developing subseasonal climate extreme events that are manifested as suddenly decreased soil moisture, driven by increased evaporative demand and/or sustained precipitation deficits. Over each climate region in the contiguous United States (CONUS), we evaluated the forecast skill of weekly root-zone soil moisture (RZSM), evaporative demand (ETo), and relevant flash drought (FD) indices derived from two dynamic models [Goddard Earth Observing System model V2p1 (GEOS-V2p1) and Global Ensemble Forecast System version 12 (GEFSv12)] in the Subseasonal Experiment (SubX) project between years 2000 and 2019 against three reference datasets: Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2), North American Land Data Assimilation System, phase 2 (NLDAS-2), and GEFSv12 reanalysis. The ETo and its forcing variables at lead week 1 have moderate-to-high anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) skill (∼0.70–0.95) except downwelling shortwave radiation, and by weeks 3–4, predictability was low for all forcing variables (ACC < 0.5). RZSM (0–100 cm) for model GEFSv12 showed high skill at lead week 1 (∼0.7–0.85 ACC) in the High Plains, West, Midwest, and South CONUS regions when evaluated against GEFSv12 reanalysis but lower skill against MERRA-2 and NLDAS-2 and ACC skill are still close to 0.5 for lead weeks 3–4, better than ETo forecasts. GEFSv12 analysis has not been evaluated against in situ observations and has substantial RZSM anomaly differences when compared to NLDAS-2, and our analysis identified GEFSv12 reforecast prediction limit, which can maximally achieve ACC ∼0.6 for RZSM forecasts between lead weeks 3 and 4. Analysis of major FD events reveals that GEFSv12 reforecast inconsistently captured the correct location of atmospheric and RZSM anomalies contributing to FD onset, suggesting the needs for improving the dynamic models' assimilation and initialization procedures to improve subseasonal FD predictability. Significance Statement: Flash droughts are rapidly developing climate extremes which reduce soil moisture through enhanced evaporative demand and precipitation deficits, and these events can have large impacts on the ecosystem and crop health. We evaluated the subseasonal forecast skill of soil moisture and evaporative demand against three reanalysis datasets and found that evaporative demand skill was similar between forecasts and reanalyses while soil moisture skill is dependent on the reference dataset. Skill of evaporative demand decreases rapidly after week 1, while soil moisture skill declines more slowly after week 1. Case studies for the 2012, 2017, and 2019 United States flash droughts identified that forecasts could capture rapid decreases in soil moisture in some regions but not consistently, implying that long-lead forecasts still need improvements before being used in early warning systems. Improvements in flash drought predictability at longer lead times will require less biased initial conditions, better model parameterizations, and improved representations of large-scale teleconnections. Accurate predictions of streamflow and flood events are contingent upon the availability of reliable hydrometeorological data. In regions characterized by scarcity of ground‐based hydrometeorological observations, satellite and reanalysis data assume prominence as alternative predictors. Floods and droughts have emerged as a significant concern in Northern Ghana, yet the scarcity of ground‐based hydrometeorological data impedes effective prediction of these hydrological events. Consequently, the identification of suitable surrogate hydrometeorological data holds paramount importance in addressing these challenges. This study, therefore, assessed the accuracy of satellite and reanalysis data against ground‐based data in Northern Ghana. Rainfall and mean temperature spanning from 1998 to 2019 and soil moisture datasets from 2019 to 2022 were collected from GMet, ISMN (ground‐based), CHIRPS, PERSIANN‐CDR, ERA5, ARC2, MERRA‐2, TRMM and CFSR (satellite and reanalysis). Employing rigorous statistical measures, namely standard deviation, mean absolute error (MAE) and mean bias error (MBE), the accuracy of these datasets was thoroughly evaluated. The results revealed that CHIRPS and PERSIANN‐CDR exhibited superior accuracy in rainfall simulation, with CHIRPS demonstrating particularly consistent congruence with observed data. In terms of mean temperature prediction, ERA5 surpassed MERRA‐2 and CFSR. Regarding soil moisture assessments, both ERA5 and CFSR offered satisfactory simulations. Hence, our findings advocate for the preference of CHIRPS (for rainfall data), ERA5 (for temperature data) and a combination of CFSR/ERA5 (for soil moisture data) as dependable primary data sources for streamflow modelling, drought analysis, flood prediction and water resource management in the context of Northern Ghana.
