The present study concerns the development of new models to estimate the minimum spouting velocity (Ums) in various configurations of fountain‐confined conical spouted beds (FC‐CSBs) with fine particles. Existing literature correlations were found to be inaccurate for FC‐CSBs. Therefore, smart modelling techniques were employed to design more accurate predictive tools. The radial basis function (RBF) approach provided the best predictions for systems without draft tubes as well as those with open‐sided draft tubes. Additionally, the Gaussian process regression (GPR) approach yielded the best predictions for systems with nonporous draft tubes. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) values for the testing phase were 5.80%, 5.67%, and 5.59%, respectively. These models consider how bed shape and particle properties affect Ums. The sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the factors with more importance in controlling Ums. Finally, simpler correlations were derived for Ums prediction in different FC‐CSB configurations, with accuracy around 12% error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The worldwide consumption of pistachio nuts has been increasing over the last decades due to their high nutritional value. Given that only split nuts are commercialised, the closed-shell nuts, which account for most of the harvested ones, must be split by mechanical or thermal processes. However, there is hardly any information about the splitting mechanism based on thermal treatments. Accordingly, the thermal splitting of pistachio nuts in conical spouted beds has been approached, and the effect of the air inlet temperature, the draft tube aperture ratio and the air inlet diameter on the splitting mechanism has been analysed. Batch drying tests have been carried out in the proposed technology at an air inlet temperature range of 40–120 ∘ C using configurations with and without draft tube. The operating temperature and dryer configuration that allows attaining up to 60% of split pistachios and preserving their quality are 80 ∘ C , an inlet diameter of 0.05 m and an open-sided draft tube with an aperture ratio of 80%. Draft tubes have emerged as promising internal devices to overcome the scale up limitations of the spouted bed. Although only a few parameters define draft tubes, the design of these devices is complex and remains a challenging task, as knowledge concerning the gas–solid flow pattern in the spouted bed is required for a proper implementation. Therefore, this study aims to propose a new criterion for the design of draft tubes (nonporous and open-sided) based on the average spout diameter measured by a borescopic technique in conical spouted beds without draft tube. Based on the radial and axial particle velocity profiles, hydrodynamic analysis, and cycle time distributions, the new configurations are compared with those without tube and with conventional draft tubes. The new open-sided tube provides maximum particle velocities of 480.90 ± 14.60 mm/s in the spout and 90.10 ± 4.40 mm/s in the annulus. These values are lower and higher than the particle velocities obtained without draft tube in the spout and annulus regions, respectively, which means it modifies particle residence time in these regions. The new open-sided tube provides a more efficient gas–solid contact than any conventional one, with spouting behaviour being very similar to the configuration without tube (differences in the minimum spouting velocity being in the 2–6% range), which is a key aspect for scale up purposes. Drying is a highly energy-intensive process and dryers are considered one of the most energy-consuming industrial equipment. Nevertheless, the energy contribution of the draft tube in the spouted bed has hardly been studied. This equipment is widely recognized as a versatile and efficient gas-solid contact method for several chemical and physical operations. Thus, the objective of this study is to perform an energy analysis of a draft tube conical spouted bed for particulate materials. Drying of alumina, soybean, and barley has been performed with three different configurations: without tube and with nonporous and open-sided tubes. Energy Efficiency, Drying Efficiency, and Specific Energy Consumption have been the parameters considered for energy analysis. The nonporous tube provided the best energy performance for diffusive materials, such as barley and soybean particles, with reductions in the energy consumption in the range from 31.60% to 42.40% in relation to configuration without tube. The configurations with open-sided tube and without tube provided similar energy performance for all materials. Therefore, this study contributes to support that draft tubes are promising devices for improving energy issues in the spouted bed, mainly in the processing of low moisture materials. Accordingly, the hydrodynamic behaviour of conical spouted beds has been studied for fine particles differing in size and density in a wide range of inlet air flow rates. This knowledge is essential for a successful scaling up and industrial implementation of the spouted bed. Therefore, the effect air velocity and solid properties (density and size) have on local solid velocity has been ascertained in a fountain confined conical spouted bed using a borescope technique (Particle Tracking Velocimetry, P T V) applied to several bed configurations. The results show a close relationship between the inlet air velocity and the local solid velocity, with the gas-solid contact being especially vigorous in the configurations without draft tube and with the open-sided draft tube. The solid circulation flow rate is lowest when a nonporous draft tube is used due to the low solid vertical velocities in the annulus, even at high air flow rates. Nevertheless, vertical velocities in the annular zone increase when particle size and density are increased, although these velocities are lower in the spout and fountain regions due to the higher momentum exchange required for their acceleration. A novel internal device called fountain confiner has been developed, which stabilizes the system and allows operating with fine particles, even without any type of draft tube. Given the stability this device confers upon the system, lower minimum spouting velocities than in conventional systems are required, and therefore the correlations in the literature overestimate this hydrodynamic parameter. Accordingly, runs have been carried out using this novel device in order to study the hydrodynamics and the influence geometric and operating factors have on the minimum spouting velocity in fountain confined conical spouted beds, with and without draft tubes. The beds are made up of fine sand and sawdust particles. Based on an experimental design, it was ascertained that, although certain factors are influential in given configurations, those of greater influence in all the configurations are the solid properties, static bed height and gas inlet diameter. Pressure fluctuation analysis has been used to identify different flow regimes in spouted beds. Although this is a promising cost-effective tool for process control and design purposes, it has hardly been used in spouted beds operating with fine and irregular particles. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to apply pressure fluctuation analysis to spouted beds operating with fine and irregular particles, either without tube or equipped with draft tube. • The fountain confiner is essential for scaling up conical spouted beds. • The confiner length should be approximately 2-3 times the bed surface diameter. • As the confiner is longer particle entrainment is lower. The design factors of fountain confined conical spouted beds have been assessed in order to determine their best combination for scaling up and enhancing fine particle retention. The results evidence that the length of the confiner and the height of the draft tube entrainment zone are the key design factors, causing the highest entrainment reduction. The spouted bed regime is an alternative to fixed and fluidized beds due to the excellent gas-solid contact and the high reduction in operating pressure drop. Nevertheless, the most important limitation of this technology lies in its scaling up, since the inlet diameter/particle diameter ratio must be below 20–30 to avoid bed instability. In order to overcome this limitation, a new internal device called fountain confiner has been developed, which stabilises the system and allows operating with fine particles even without any type of draft tube. Runs have been carried out using the fountain confiner in order to analyse the stability of beds composed of very fine particles and the characteristic hydrodynamic curves (pressure drop vs. air velocity) have been obtained. The use of this new device allows attaining highly stable operation regimes, widening the operational range to 4 times that of plain spouted beds, and increasing the inlet diameter/particle diameter ratio from 20–30 to 1000. Moreover, the optimum distance between the bed surface and the lower end of the confiner has been delimited for the range of operating conditions studied, 0.06 - 0.08 m (between 1 / 2 and 1 / 3 the confiner diameter), since it is a key parameter for system stability. The size and geometry of the spout are crucial parameters for the design and scaling-up of spouted beds because they condition heat and mass transfer rates. It is well-established in the literature that spouted beds without draft tube show axisymmetric spout shape, but this does not occur with open-sided draft tubes. Particle velocity has been measured at several bed heights and angular coordinates, under different geometric parameters and operating conditions, to determine the location of the spout-annulus interface in beds provided with open-sided draft tubes. Narrow draft tube wall slits and low air velocities lead to spouts of small size and triangular shape. The greatest spout expansion (high air velocities and wide draft tube wall slits) leads to a Reuleaux triangle shape, in which the spout swallows the tube. The results allow a better understanding of fine particle hydrodynamics in conical spouted beds, which is essential information for their scaling-up. A device and methodology have been developed for measuring the circulation rate of fine particles in conical spouted beds. A comparison with particle tracking shows the method is appropriate. The gas–solid contact in spouted beds is characterized by a hydrodynamics leading to high heat and mass transfer rates. Several correlations have been proposed for estimating the minimum spouting velocity, and heat and mass transfer coefficients. However, those available for estimating the mass transfer coefficient are not suitable for conical spouted beds equipped with internal devices. Based on drying runs and a drying model already validated, mass transfer coefficients were estimated under different operating conditions and geometries of the internal devices. The features of the bed materials are those of greatest impact, followed by the air inlet temperature and velocity. Although the influence of the dimensions of the internals is less significant, they are also key parameters for the scaling-up of spouted beds.
