Hydropower production can cause migration delay and fish mortality, impeding the safe and timely downstream migration of diadromous fish, such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and silver eels (Anguilla anguilla). To date, only a few field performance tests, especially for eels, have evaluated the efficiency of fine-spaced angled racks associated to a surface bypass entrance to protect fish. Here, 115 salmon smolts and 65 silver eels were radio-tracked over a 2 yr period to assess passage efficiency and passage time at a hydropower intake (50 m3.s−1) retrofitted with a 20 mm rack associated to a surface bypass (2 m3.s−1). Results showed high impediment (89.6% and 96.9% for smolts and eels, respectively), and passage efficiency for the angled rack (89.1% and 93.3%), with short passage times (median, 3 and 7.5 min). However, our results highlighted a strong influence of hydrological conditions, in enhancing fish passage, especially through the bear-trap gate. We conclude that this fish passage solution, making use of existing spillways on the study site, is highly effective for both species. Special attention must, however, be paid to bar-rack design and its cleaning system to ensure fish guidance and prevent impingement or passage through the rack, especially for salmon smolts.

Developing management rules to improve downstream migration of salmon smolts in large hydropower plants is essential to limit mortality and migration delay. A 2-year telemetry study was conducted to assess the efficiency of temporary measures to enhance the safety and speed of juvenile salmon passage through the Poutès dam (Allier River, France). 124 smolts were tracked through the reservoir and downstream of the dam, during implementation of turbine modulation and/or shutdown during night and reservoir level lowering. Level lowering significantly reduced median residence time from 3.4 days to 4.4 hours. However, even with high spill during turbine modulation, the risk of smolt being drawn toward the turbines was increased at low reservoir level due to the site's configuration, greater proximity to the surface and weak repulsive effect of the rack. Moreover, results revealed that a substantial proportion of smolts can migrate during daytime and twilight during floods, even at the beginning of the migration period. Thus targeted turbine shutdown has a good potential to protect smolts, but implementation requires studies taking account of site specificities and a flexible approach.

Human-induced river fragmentation is a major threat to migratory fish species. Restoring river connectivity requires the construction of fish passage solutions, such as fishways for upstream and downstream migration. While many studies focussed on the upstream migration of diadromous fishes, and especially of adult Atlantic salmons (Salmo salar), we analyze juvenile behaviour under different hydraulic conditions at reservoir to improve the development of effective bypass systems for downstream passage of salmon smolt. Based on coupling three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to smolt positions tracked by two-dimensional (2D) telemetry, the present study aimed to explore smolt behaviour in relation to hydraulic cues. More specifically, we explored how hydraulic conditions influence fish behaviour and how fish navigate depending on this behaviour. In 2017, 23 smolts were tracked in the reservoir of Poutès (Allier River, France), associated with different turbine discharge rates. 3D CFD simulations were performed and validated against field measurements in the reservoir upstream of the hydropower plant. The study of fish displacements in relation to flow conditions provided new insights with the use of thrust force, swimming orientation and direction as means to precisely characterize smolt behaviour, which can help in the design of downstream migration passage facilities. At Poutès dam, flow velocity, flow acceleration and turbulent kinetic energy are very low and therefore can lead to fish disorientation. However, results underlined that having a minimum flow velocity of 20 cm/s in reservoirs is sufficient to prevent delay and allow fish navigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Smolts show a great shift in their activity level during the migration season. • Their behaviour concomitantly changes from a reluctance to an attraction to light. • Accounting for fish developmental level is essential when designing fishways. The development of passage systems for migratory fish is crucial to mitigate the impact of river fragmentation. Concerning downstream migration of juvenile salmon (smolts), understanding their behaviour is a key to improving the efficiency of bypass systems. Among devices to improve efficiency, artificial lighting has proved effective in certain situations. Based on (1) recent observations of early migrating smolts where migration was delayed in the Poutès dam reservoir (Allier River, France) and (2) the fact that the implementation of bypass lighting devices was based on experiments involving later-season migrants, the present study assessed the effect of a lighting device on wild early-migrating smolts. One hundred wild smolts were tagged with acoustic transmitters and their behaviour near the bypass entrance under lit or dark conditions was assessed using 2D acoustic telemetry. A very abrupt change in behaviour around mid-April was observed, which directly affected their response to light. In the first phase of the downstream migration season (before mid-April), lighting significantly reduced the attractiveness of the bypass, while this surprisingly seemed to favour passage: smolts less frequently approached the bypass entry zone but passed through it more frequently. However, in the second phase (after mid-April), lighting attracted and kept the smolts close to the bypass entrance and significantly increased passage, corroborating previous experiments. The present study demonstrated an interaction between the development of migratory fish and their behaviour under lit or dark conditions. It also highlighted the importance of taking account of such behavioural change during the migration season when designing fish passage systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
