During the past decade, many electrical transmission tower structures have failed during downburst events. This study is a part of a research program aimed to understand the behaviour of transmission lines under such localized wind events. The present study focuses on the assessment of the dynamic behaviour of the line conductors under downburst loading. A non-linear numerical model, accounting for large deformations and the effect of pretension loading, is developed and used to predict the natural frequencies and mode shapes of conductors at various loading stages. A turbulence signal is extracted from a set of full-scale data. It is added to the mean component of the downburst wind field previously evaluated from a CFD analysis. Dynamic analysis is performed using various downburst configurations. The study reveals that the response is affected by the background component, while the resonant component turns to be negligible due large aerodynamic damping of the conductors. There is growing interest in multi-purpose offshore floating platforms that: harvest energy from the sun, wind, water, and waves; desalinize water; host agriculture and aquaculture; and house residents. While there are some basic commonalities with well established, oil and gas platforms, lighter variants are functionally different with little wind research coverage. Here, we investigate a floating, multi-purpose, light duty platform under 1:150 scaled straight atmospheric boundary layer wind (ABL), tornado like vortices (TLV), and downburst (DB) conditions. The experiments examined the movement of a 1:150 geometrically scaled platform with six degrees of freedom and two mooring Configurations. Four Configurations are studied, (1) Loosely moored platform, (2) Tightly moored platform, (3) Platform with ballast, and (4) Platform with ballast and weight on the deck. DB winds produced the greatest movement, followed by the TLV winds. Little movement was seen under the ABL winds. Loosely moored platforms moved more than tightly moored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thunderstorm winds are cold descending gravity currents whose impingement on the ground creates strong radial outflows with maximum wind speeds in the near-ground region. They represent one of the greatest hazards for natural and built environment as well as one of the deadliest phenomena all over the world. This study carries on the post-processing analyses of the downburst experimental campaign performed at the WindEEE Dome, at Western University in Canada, in the context of the ERC project THUNDERR. While a former study presented the interaction between downburst and atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) winds, here the focus is on the influence exerted by the thunderstorm cloud translation. This was experimentally replicated at large scale by means of impinging jet technique where the jet axis was inclined to a non-zero angle with respect to the vertical. Finally, the inclusion of background ABL wind allowed to reconstruct the complete three-dimensional and non-stationary nature of the phenomenon. The outflow radial symmetry is lost in case of inclined jet axis. This leads to an intensification of the front-wind side and weakening of the rear-wind side, where the entrainment of the counter-directed ABL wind, and consequent flow speed-up, are not as pronounced as in the vertical-axis case. The non-linearity of the complex interaction between downburst, ABL flow and cloud translation is proven and quantified. Vertical profiles of mean wind speed and turbulence intensity are discussed in relation to the mutual interaction among flow components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study characterizes the mean and turbulent flow fields resulting from several large-scale downbursts simulated in the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) Dome at Western University. Detailed three-component velocity Cobra probe measurements are conducted for several Reynolds numbers and downburst height to diameter ratios. The wind speed records at a comprehensive number of heights and radial distances are analyzed using a moving average approach similarly employed in some full-scale campaigns. A reasonable averaging time is determined and the analysis of the turbulent flow is carried out using first and second order statistics and the similarities with full-scale data is presented. Moreover, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements are carried out in order to investigate the dynamics of downburst vortices for the same Reynolds numbers and the same downburst height to diameter ratios as in the Cobra probe measurements. This paper reports the first aero-elastic test conducted under a scaled downburst wind field at the WindEEE dome facility at the University of Western Ontario, Canada. The main purpose of the test is to assess the dynamic response of a multi-span transmission line. The study starts by providing a characterization of the downburst wind field produced in WindEEE including a comparison with results of previously conducted numerical simulations. A number of test configurations, involving different locations of the downburst relative to the line, is considered. A decomposition approach is developed to separate between the resonant and the background components of the response. The results are presented in the form of a dynamic magnification factor that relates the peak response including the dynamic effect to the maximum quasi-static response. The test results show that the resonance contribution ranges between 5% and 10% of the peak response for the tower. They also show that the dynamic response of the conductors can reach up to 30% and 12% of the peak response at low and high downburst speeds, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
