[Resumen]: El presente trabajo busca realizar una revisión del conjunto de teorías sobre el desarrollo regional y local, y junto a ello, un análisis de la región económica de la comarca del Barbanza, aplicando para ello los resultados de dicha revisión. Para desarrollar nuestro propósito, en primer lugar, haremos un recorrido por las diferentes acepciones que ha tenido a lo largo de la historia el concepto de región, para así dar claridad a la pregunta de cómo y por qué se dividen los territorios. A continuación, iniciamos un trayecto a través de las principales teorías del crecimiento regional para, finalmente centrarnos en las teorías del desarrollo local, las cuales nos darán una visión más clara de la importancia que tiene para el crecimiento territorial la ubicación y la organización empresarial. En segundo lugar, realizaremos una caracterización comarcal del Barbanza, realizando a posteriori una aplicación de las teorías del distrito industrial y del cluster para contrastar si se adapta a lo planteado por las mismas. En conjunto, la región del Barbanza constituye un área homogénea, no funcional ni estructurada, formando así un conjunto lineal de nodos con un poder de atracción diferente cada uno, lo cual nos indicará que su hinterland se ubica fuera de la misma región. Asimismo, su localización geográfica y su cercanía a la mar, determinan de manera clara su especialización productiva. A nivel productivo, tanto las teorías del distrito como la del cluster pueden explicar el desarrollo del sector conservero y sus principales problemas. Por lo tanto, afrontaremos la aplicación de dichas teorías desde un punto de vista histórico, donde analizaremos la transformación de la industria conservera de la región desde la visión del distrito industrial hacia su transformación al cluster. [Abstract]: The present work seeks to review the set of theories on regional and local development and, together with this, an analysis of the economic region of Barbanza, applying the results of this review. First of all, to develop our, main aim we will analyse the different meanings that the concept of region has had throughout history, in order to clarify the question of how and why territories were divided. Next, we will begin to investigate through the main theories of regional growth to finally focus on the hypothesis of local development, which will give us a clear view of the importance of location and business organization for territorial growth. In the second place, we will perform a characterization of the Barbanza’s region, establishing later on an application of the theories of the industrial district and the cluster to verify if it adapts to what is proposed by them. As a whole, the Barbanza’s region constitutes a homogeneous area, not very functional or structured, but creating a linear set of nodes with a different power of attraction for each one, which will indicate that their hinterland is located outside that region. Also, its geographical location and its proximity to the sea, clearly determine its productive specialization. At a productive level, both, the district and cluster theories can explain the development of the canning sector and its main problems. Therefore, we will tackle the application of these theories from a historical point of view, where we will analyze the transformation of the canning industry of the region from the standpoint of the industrial district towards its transformation within the cluster.
