This work deals with the isothermal pyrolysis of Pine and Beech wood samples and kinetic studies, using the thermo-analytical technique, at five different operating temperatures. Pyrolysis processes were investigated by using the distributed apparent activation energy model, which involves the complex mixture of different continuous distribution functions. It was found that decomposition processes of wood pseudo-components take place in different conversion areas during entire pyrolyses, whereby these areas, as well as the changes in apparent activation energy ( E) values, are not the same for softwood and hardwood samples. Bulk density (Bden) and energy density (ED) considerations have shown that both biomass samples suffer from low Bden and ED values. It was concluded that pyrolysis can be used as a means of decreasing transportation costs of wood biomass materials, thus increasing energy density. The 'pseudo' kinetic compensation effect was identified, which arises from kinetic model variation and wood species variation. In the current extensive study, it was concluded that primary pyrolysis refers to decomposition reactions of any of three major constituents of the considered wood samples. Also, it was established that primary reactions may proceed in parallel with simultaneous decomposition of lignin, hemicelluloses and cellulose in the different regions of wood samples, depending on the operating temperature. It was established that endothermic effects dominate, which are characterized with devolatilization and formation of volatile products. It has been suggested that the endothermic behavior that arises from pyrolyses of considered samples may indicate the endothermic depolymerization sequence of cellulose structures. Isothermal decomposition process of commercial Creosote was analyzed by thermogravimetric technique in a nitrogen atmosphere, at four different operating temperatures ( T = 230, 250, 270, and 290 °C). It was found that the two-parameter autocatalytic Šesták-Berggren kinetic model best describes the investigated process. It was established that the applied logistic function can successfully perform a given kinetic predictions of investigated process, at all operating temperatures. The experimental density distribution function of the apparent activation energy values was evaluated. Based of the characteristic shape of distribution curve, it was concluded that the isothermal pyrolysis of commercial Creosote represent a complex process, which probably includes primary and secondary (autocatalytic) pyrolysis reactions, together with various decomposition reactions and radicals recombination pathways. The differential conversion curves of the non-isothermal NiO reduction process by hydrogen are fitted by the Weibull (non-isothermal) probability density function (Wpdf), in a wide range of the degree of conversion (α = 0.06-0.96). It was established that the Weibull distribution parameters (β and η) show the different dependences on the heating rate of the system (vh) (shape parameter (β) -- linear form and scale parameter (η) -- exponential form). Model independent values of the apparent activation energy were calculated using the Friedman's isoconversional method. It was found that the calculated apparent activation energy depends on the degree of conversion, α, and it shows a constant value in the range of the degree of conversion 0.20 ≤ α ≤ 0.60 (Ea = 90.8 kJ mol-1). Knowing the Weibull distribution function of reaction times, it is possible to determine the density distribution function of apparent activation energies at different heating rates. It was established that the changes of the symmetry of density distribution functions may be an indication for deviations from the simple crystallization kinetics as expressed by the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) model, and this behaviour is probably due to a more complex transformation process such as a process described by the two-parameter autocatalytic Šesták-Berggren model.* [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new procedure for identification of the effective distribution function for determination of the distributed activation energy models, which is based on the Bayesian statistics, has been established. The five different continuous probability functions (exponential, logistic, normal, gamma and Weibull probability functions (the extended set of distributions)) were used for searching the most appropriate reactivity model for two heterogeneous processes: (a) the isothermal reduction process of nickel oxide under hydrogen atmosphere and (b) the isothermal degradation process of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (Lexan) under nitrogen atmosphere. Using the Bayes weights, it was shown that for both processes, the most suitable distributed reactivity model is the Weibull distribution model. The kinetic parameters (ln A, Ea) attached with the Weibull distribution model were calculated for both investigated processes, using three different computational methods (the maximum likelihood method (MLM), the nonlinear regression analysis (NRA), and the posterior mean (the expected value of scale parameter η, E(η)). It was shown that there is an excellent agreement between the values of kinetic parameters calculated by the MLM, NRA, and E(η) approaches. Using Bayes weights, it is possible to discriminate between different probability models and to quantify how well a distribution fits the experimental data. The decomposition process of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has been studied by thermogravimetry in isothermal conditions at four different operating temperatures (380 K, 400 K, 420 K, and 440 K). It was found that the experimental integral and differential conversion curves at the different operating temperatures can be successfully described by the isothermal Weibull distribution function with a unique value of the shape parameter ( β = 1.07). It was also established that the Weibull distribution parameters ( β and η) show independent behavior on the operating temperature. Using the integral and differential (Friedman) isoconversional methods, in the conversion (α) range of 0.20 ≤ α ≤ 0.80, the apparent activation energy ( E a) value was approximately constant ( E a, int = 95.2 kJmol−1 and E a, diff = 96.6 kJmol−1, respectively). The values of E a calculated by both isoconversional methods are in good agreement with the value of E a evaluated from the Arrhenius equation (94.3 kJmol−1), which was expressed through the scale distribution parameter ( η). The Málek isothermal procedure was used for estimation of the kinetic model for the investigated decomposition process. It was found that the two-parameter Šesták-Berggren (SB) autocatalytic model best describes the NaHCO3 decomposition process with the conversion function f(α) = α0.18(1-α)1.19. It was also concluded that the calculated density distribution functions of the apparent activation energies ( ddfE a’s) are not dependent on the operating temperature, which exhibit the highly symmetrical behavior (shape factor = 1.00).
