The paper presents the modelling results of selected characteristics of water-leaving light in an optically complex nearshore marine environment. The modelled quantities include the spectra of the remote-sensing reflectance Rrs(λ) and the hue angle α, which quantitatively describes the colour of water visible to the unaided human eye. Based on the latter value, it is also possible to match water-leaving light spectra to classes on the traditional Forel-Ule water colour scale. We applied a simple model that assumes that seawater is made up of chemically pure water and three types of additional optically significant components: particulate organic matter (POM) (which includes living phytoplankton), particulate inorganic matter (PIM), and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). We also utilised the specific inherent optical properties (SIOPs) of these components, determined from measurements made at a nearshore location on the Gulf of Gdańsk. To a first approximation, the simple model assumes that the Rrs spectrum can be described by a simple function of the ratio of the light backscattering coefficient to the sum of the light absorption and backscattering coefficients (u = bb/(a + bb)). The model calculations illustrate the complexity of possible relationships between the seawater composition and the optical characteristics of an environment in which the concentrations of individual optically significant components may be mutually uncorrelated. The calculations permit a quantitative interpretation of the Forel-Ule scale. The following parameters were determined for the several classes on this scale: typical spectral shapes of the u ratio, possible ranges of the total light absorption coefficient in the blue band (a(440)), as well as upper limits for concentrations of total and organic and inorganic fractions of suspended particles (SPM, POM and PIM concentrations). The paper gives examples of practical algorithms that, based on a given Rrs spectrum or some of its features, and using lookup tables containing the modelling results, enable to estimate the approximate composition of seawater. We assessed the qualitative composition of fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in Arctic Ocean surface water and in sea ice north of the Svalbard Archipelago (in the Sophia Basin, the Yermak Plateau and the north Spitsbergen shelf) in May and June 2015, during the "TRANSSIZ" expedition (Transitions in the Arctic Seasonal Sea Ice Zone). Samples collected in open lead waters (OW), under-ice waters (UIW) and from the sea ice (ICE) were analyzed by fluorescence spectroscopy and subsequently by multivariate statistical methods using Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC). Statistical analyses of all measured DOM fluorescence excitation and emission matrices (EEMs) enabled four components to be identified and validated. The spectral characteristics of the first component C1 (λ Ex /λ Em 282(270)/335) corresponded to those of tryptophan. The spectral properties of the other three components corresponded to those of humic-like substances: components two (C2 − λ Ex /λ Em 315(252)/395) and three (C3 − λ Ex /λ Em 357(258)/446) corresponded to humic-like substances of marine origin, whereas component four (C4 − λ Ex /λ Em 261(399)/492) resembled terrestrial humic-like substances. Changes in FDOM composition were recorded in OW, in contrast to UIW and sea ice. In the OW the sum of fluorescence intensities of humic-like components (C2, C3 and C4) was two times higher than the fluorescence intensity of protein-like component (C1). Component C2 exhibited the highest fluorescence intensity. In the UIW and particularly in the sea ice the fluorescence intensity of the protein-like component, I C1 , was the highest. The I C1 in the sea ice increased toward the sea ice bottom, reaching maximum values at the sea ice-water interface. The calculated spectral indices (SUVA(254) and HIX) and ratios of fluorescence intensities of protein-like to humic-like components, I p / I h , suggested that FDOM in water and sea ice was predominantly autochthonous, characterized by low molecular weight organic compounds and low aromatic ring saturation. Enrichment factors D c , calculated from salinity-normalized values of the optical DOM properties and dissolved organic carbon concentrations, indicated the significant fractionation of FDOM in the sea ice relative to the parent open waters. The humic-like terrestrial component C4 was enriched the least, whereas the protein-like component C1 was enriched the most. A statistically significant (p < 0.0001) and relatively strong (R = 63) correlation between I C1 and the total chlorophyll a concentration Tchla was found in the sea ice, which suggests that sympagic algal communities were producers of the protein-like FDOM fraction. • We show differences in FDOM composition in Arctic Ocean surface waters and the sea ice. • Selective fractionation of FDOM during freezing and accumulation of protein-like FDOM in sea ice resulted from biological production by sympagic algae. • Sympagic algae dwelling on the ice bottom may be responsible for FDOM production. • The protein-like components dominate FDOM composition in the sea ice.
