In this paper we propose several ways of increasing the information capacity of data transmission based on the combination of the technologies of dispersion control, distributed amplification, spectral channel multiplexing, and optical regeneration of signals. The results of mathematical modelling can be used for upgrading existing lines and designing the next generation of trunk high-speed fiber-optic communication lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study a periodic Raman amplified dispersion-managed system with backward-pumping configuration, considering noise and nonlinear impairments. A general optimization method based on nonlinearity management is applied in order to find the configuration that maximizes the system performance. The system is later tested using a full numerical implementation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and shown to effectively deliver its longest propagation distance in the same optimal region. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with periodic coefficients is analyzed under the condition of large variation in the local dispersion. The solution after n periods is represented as the sum of the solution to the linear part of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the nonlinear first-period correction multiplied by the number of periods n. An algorithm for calculating the quasilinear solution with arbitrary initial conditions is proposed.
