The World Health Organization recommends young children receive influenza vaccination (IV) annually. Stratified by children's previous IV status, this study investigated the associated factors of parental intention to let their children aged 24 to 59 months receive IV in the next 12 months in Hong Kong, China. We conducted a cross-sectional population-based telephone survey among 540 Chinese parents of children aged 24 to 59 months. The prevalence of parental intention regarding their child's IV was 68.9% and 19.8%, respectively, in the ever-vaccinated and never-vaccinated groups. Adjusted for background factors, perceived susceptibility (adjusted odds ratio [ORa] = 3.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.07-9.54), perceived benefit (ORa = 4.77, 95% CI = 2.52-9.05), perceived barrier (ORa = 0.38, 95% CI = 0.17-0.84), cue to action (ORa = 3.57, 95% CI = 1.88-6.78), subjective norm (ORa = 11.23, 95% CI = 6.17-20.46), and having family members vaccinated (ORa = 1.79, 95% CI = 1.09-2.96) were associated with parental intention for ever-vaccinated children's IV, while only perceived benefit (ORa = 8.85, 95% CI = 3.36-23.34) and subjective norm (ORa = 21.66, 95% CI = 9.25-50.71) were significant for never-vaccinated children. Our findings showed that the identified factors and applicability of the health belief model varied according to child's vaccination status. Health promotion should consider segmentation principles. Besides modifying related cognitions like perceived benefit and barrier (only for the ever-vaccinated group), such programs should improve cue to action involving health professionals and family members and create supportive subjective norms. Purpose: Internet use has global influences on all aspects of life and has become a growing concern. Cross-sectional studies on Internet addiction (IA) have been reported but causality is often unclear. More longitudinal studies are warranted.Methods: We investigated incidence and predictors of IA conversion among secondary school students. A 12-month longitudinal study was conducted among Hong Kong Chinese Secondary 1-4 students (N = 8286). Using the 26-item Chen Internet Addiction Scale (CIAS; cut-off >63), non-IA cases were identified at baseline. Conversion to IA during the follow-up period was detected, with incidence and predictors derived using multi-level models.Results: Prevalence of IA was 16.0% at baseline and incidence of IA was 11.81 per 100 person-years (13.74 for males and 9.78 for females). Risk background factors were male sex, higher school forms, and living with only one parent, while protective background factors were having a mother/father with university education. Adjusted for all background factors, higher baseline CIAS score (ORa = 1.07), longer hours spent online for entertainment and social communication (ORa = 1.92 and 1.63 respectively), and Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs (except perceived severity of IA and perceived self-efficacy to reduce use) were significant predictors of conversion to IA (ORa = 1.07-1.45).Conclusions: Prevalence and incidence of IA conversion were high and need attention. Interventions should take into account risk predictors identified, such as those of the HBM, and time management skills should be enhanced. This study aimed to investigate prevalence and associated factors of influenza vaccination (IV) among children aged 12–23 months. Our cross-sectional survey interviewed 489 parents of children aged 12–23 months anonymously at twelve maternal and child health centers in Hong Kong. Results showed that only 11.5% of the children had ever received IV (64.3% being subsidized). Adjusted for the child’s age, significant factors of the children’s IV included parental knowledge about governmental policy/recommendation (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.64, 95%CI = 1.09,6.40), knowledge about annual IV requirement (AOR = 2.30, 95%CI = 1.21,4.38), perceived safety-related barrier (AOR≥0.14, 95%CI = 0.06,0.33), cue to action (AOR = 7.79, 95%CI = 3.45,17.58), and subjective norm (AOR = 4.59, 95%CI = 2.34,9.00). IV prevalence of children aged 12–23 months remained low despite a subsidization scheme. The higher IV prevalence of older children reported by other studies suggested that parents postponed action. Promotion campaigns should shift emphases from cost reduction and mass media approaches to dissemination of knowledge about IV policy and safety, enhancement of health professionals’ advice, and creation of supportive subjective norm. Background: Adolescent Internet addiction (IA) is prevalent. No study, however, has applied the health belief model (HBM) to investigate issues on IA nor investigated factors associated with intention to correct one's perceived IA problem (self‐corrective intention). Such information facilitates design of related interventions, which are warranted. Methods: This cross‐sectional study surveyed 9,618 Chinese secondary school students in Hong Kong; 4,111 (42.7%) self‐assessed that they had IA (self‐assessed IA cases); 1,145 of these self‐assessed IA cases (27.9%) were also classified as IA cases (concordant IA cases), as their Chen Internet Addiction Scale score exceeded 63. Results: The prevalence of self‐corrective intention among these two subsamples was only 28.2% and 34.1%, respectively. In the self‐assessed IA subsample, the HBM constructs including perceived susceptibility to IA [adjusted odds ratio (ORa) = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.16, 1.34], perceived severity of IA (ORa = 2.28, 95% CI = 2.09, 2.48), perceived benefits for reducing Internet use (ORa = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.18, 1.24), self‐efficacy to reduce Internet use (ORa = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.11), and cues to action to reduce Internet use (ORa = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.11, 1.20) were positively, while perceived barriers for reducing Internet use (ORa = 0.95, 95% CI = 0.94, 0.97) were negatively, associated with self‐corrective intention. Similar factors were identified in the concordant IA subsample. Conclusions: A large proportion of the students perceived that they had IA but only about one‐third intended to correct the problem. Future interventions may consider altering students’ HBM constructs, and focus on the segment of concordant IA with self‐corrective intention, as they show readiness for changes. The prevalence of HIV and HPV is high among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. It is unclear whether cognitive and affective responses related to HPV and HPV-related diseases are negatively associated with HIV-related risk behaviors among MSM. This cross-sectional study interviewed 449 adult Chinese MSM in Hong Kong. The prevalence of unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) and having had anal sex with more than one man in the last 6 months (multiple male sex partnerships) was 39.0 and 71.3 %, respectively. After adjusting for four significant background variables (education level, cohabitation with a man, exposure to HIV prevention materials, and HIV voluntary counseling and testing), variables negatively associated with UAI and/or multiple male sex partnerships included (1) correct HPV-related knowledge (AOR = 0.48-0.66), (2) perceived susceptibility (AOR = 0.32-0.55) and perceived severity (AOR = 0.12-0.60) related to HPV and HPV-related diseases, and (3) fear towards contracting genital warts and penile/anal cancer (AOR = 0.40-0.55). Perceived high chance of contracting HPV was positively associated with multiple partnerships (AOR = 4.74). It is possible to reduce HIV-related risk behaviors by increasing levels of knowledge, cognitions, and fear related to HPV and related diseases. Mental health problems are prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM); however, underutilization of mental health services among MSM with mental health problems has been widely documented. To explore factors associated with mental health service utilization (i.e., having sought help from mental health professionals; and intention to seek mental health services if one were to have mental health problems) among 2 subsamples of MSM who were at risk of mental health problems (Subsample 1: those who scored above the cut-off for probable depression or probable anxiety, or had suicidal ideation; Subsample 2: those self-perceived to have had mental health problems in the past 12 months) in Hong Kong. A cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted among MSM (N = 175 for Subsample 1 and N = 143 for Subsample 2). Multivariate logistic regressions showed that factors for having sought help from mental health professionals included disclosure of MSM behavior to all family members and positive attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help for Subsample 1, and positive attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help, ever diagnosed for mental disorders, and enacted stigma for Subsample 2. In addition, factors associated with intention to seek help from mental health professionals included willingness to disclose MSM behavior to mental health professionals for Subsample 1, and positive attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help for both subsamples. Interventions to promote help seeking for mental health problems among MSM should promote positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help and reduce stigma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Influenza results in severe complications among 24- to 59-month-old children, who are recommended by the WHO to take up influenza vaccination (IV) annually. Health promotion is warranted. Yet, there is a dearth of studies on IV prevalence and associated factors in this age group. Methods A random population-based telephone survey interviewed 540 parents of Chinese children aged 24–59 months in Hong Kong during March through June, 2011. Constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM) and subjective norm formed basis for assessing parental perceptions on influenza and IV. For data analysis, adjusted, and stepwise multiple logistic regression models were fit. Results The prevalence of having taken up at least one dose and two doses of IV among children aged 24–59 months was 58.9 and 42.4%, respectively. Significant associated factors included family members’ IV experience (ORu = 5.37, 95% CI: 3.48, 8.29), variables related to the HBM constructs (except perceived severity) [perceived susceptibility of seasonal influenza (ORu = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.39, 2.95), perceived benefits of IV (ORu = 3.11, 95% CI: 2.05, 4.71), perceived barriers (ORu = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.25, 0.96) of IV, and cue to action (ORu = 4.79, 95% CI: 2.87, 7.99)], supportive subjective norm (ORu = 4.26, 95% CI: 2.91, 6.25), and level of fear felt during the H1N1 pandemic (ORu = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.01, 3.87). Adjusted for the child's age, the same significant factors were found. Exposure to related media messages was statistically non-significant. Conclusion The reported IV prevalence was higher than that of 24- to 59-month-old children reported in other studies. There is room for improvement through health promotion, which should modify parental cognitions related to HBM (except perceived severity and self-efficacy) and involve family members to create subjective norm.
