This text uses the concept of "place of enunciation" to explore the diverse sites of enunciation from which Anna Maria Guasch has discussed Visual Studies. Firstly, the article addresses Guasch's work from the standpoint of translation, providing a discussion of her "Los Estudios Visuales: un estado de la cuestión" through the prism of an expanded translation. Secondly, Guasch's work is analysed from an archaeocartographical stance, addressing her text "Doce reglas para una Nueva Academia" as an example of her capacity to produce coordinates to navigate the discourse of Visual Studies. Lastly, Guasch's work is analysed in terms of a Foucauldian genealogy. In this closing section, two more recent texts are discussed from a genealogical perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parentheticals are utterances which appear inserted in others introducing an additional or clarifying information. This paper analyses the prosodic behaviour of parentheticals to study in more detail their discursive functioning. As features of these kind of utterances it is possible to notice a decrease in intensity and tone, and an acceleration in the speech rate. In respect to enunciation and modality, the exam of the parameters that determine the perception of these utterances by the interlocutors allows establishing a correlation between the two discursive planes that are compared and the phonetic procedures that characterise their acoustic emission, linked to the parameters that present more accentuated differences: tone and speech rate. The variations recorded reflect an adaptation between the prosodic form of parentheticals and the strategic functions that these constructions carry out in the discourse as argumentative resources. An initial typological ambition is to position different digital narratives as media narratives, and to question the skills of their reader-scribers. Our approach is part of a plural epistemological and methodological framework, which, with a political and aesthetic aim, puts narratology and discourse analysis in tension, with a view to analysing the critical reflexivity of the reader-writers of media narratives. Our visit to the theories of reception shifts the focus from the consideration of active or passive individualities to the de-subjectivised question of enunciation, taking up the practices of reading-writing, which are played out at the interface of the political and the aesthetic. This confrontation opens up a space where the dominant discourse on art, which supports an aesthetic ideology, gives way to an aesthetics of emancipation.

The present article's study is literary scenography, focusing on the enunciation in which women's voice and the space-time coordinates in the midst of a mystery and thriller discursive event organize the "Natal na Barca" discourse from Lygia Fagundes Telles, selected as the subject of analysis. To accomplish our goal, we looked into the Discourse Analysis in France (DA), in its discursive-enunciative perspective, with emphasis in the literary discourse category, thesis proposed by Maingueneau (2018) that comprehends the literary as an extent of textual linguistics. The linguistic materiality and society are related to Lygia's subjectivity and to the social-historical conditions in her discourse's production. The literary discourse is a part of the constituents discourses, as it provides sense to the collective acts. Our studies confirm scenography as the condition and product of discourse, as it involves the creative process, committed enunciation and the manifestation of women's suffering and misfortunes in a society marked by sexism. Victim and agent of the creative process, Lygia does not find any form of linguistic-literary investment other than the elaboration of discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work aims to analyze medical texts from 19th century. We take multifactorial historiography (Swiggers, 2020) and Émile Benveniste's Theory of Enunciation (Benveniste, 1989) as a theoretical framework. Based on the enunciative analysis the Health Manual, by Raspail (1860), we noticed a certain discursive organization. We conclude that, in Rio Grande do Sul, a discourse was built that elevates the French origin, whether of products or manuals of health, to the status of holder of power to say what is and is not "good" medicine. This article aims to explain the path that Ducrot took to develop one of the fundamental projects of Saussure's linguistics: that of a Linguistic Semantics. To this end, based on the notions postulated by Argumentation in Language (AL), by the Polyphonic Theory of Enunciation (PTE) and by the Semantic Blocks Theory (SBT), it is intended to show how Argumentative Semantics is, in large part, a theoretical framework coherent with saussurian principles, especially with the postulates that outline a semantic theory in the chapter entitled "Linguistic value", of the Course in General Linguistics. In the first section, the principles and concepts of AL and SBT are elucidated and a semantic-argumentative analysis of a short story is carried out. In the second, the theoretical-methodological apparatus of PTE is presented and the distinction between the notions of sentence, utterance, text and discourse is systematized, as well as between their semantic values. Finally, the saussurian principles necessary for research in Argumentative Semantics are resumed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By analysing Dreyfus... (1990) by J.-C. Grumberg and its Italian translation, we will show that the markers of orality have a double discursive purpose in this play: constructing individual identities of characters and showing scenic dynamics of enunciative proximity. We will also show that these phenomena are not transposed equivalently in translation, which is even more marked when the discursive procedures present obvious cultural anchors. In fact, like the majority of J.-C. Grumberg’s plays, Dreyfus..., places Jewish identity at the centre of its dramaturgy. The article first presents the theoretical framework in which our reflection takes place, focusing on orality in the literary text and also on J.-C. Grumberg’s dramaturgy from an identity perspective. The second part is based on the analysis of orality markers in the French version of the play and in its translation. These are first studied in their idiolectal function, and then they are studied as intersubjective and situational markers.

The present work, carried out within the theoretical framework of pragmatic linguistics and macrosyntax (Fuentes Rodríguez 2017a, 2017b [2000]), aims to analyze the concessive constructions of enunciation and their attenuating and intensifying functions in persuasive discourse. These constructions, of peripheral position, act on the speech act and present a dynamic macrosyntactic behavior in the argumentation. They modulate the enunciation and intervene in the speech giving it an expressive nuance: it can soften or reinforce it without affecting its truth. From there we can see the attitude shown by the speaker about his own statement. These constructions allow the speaker to achieve self-protection of the self-image, or to prevent a threat to the participants in the verbal interaction. This is its attenuating effect. On the other hand, the assertion can also be emphasized if in the constructions the speaker resorts to the condition located at the limit of the scale and carries out an evaluation towards reality. And the two communicative strategies have something in common: they are deliberately used by the speaker to persuade his listener more effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SEMIOTICS ,ENUNCIATION ,DISCOURSE ,INSCRIPTIONS ,POSTURE ,NARRATIVES ,IDEOLOGY ,EXPERTISE - Abstract
The proposed research falls within the framework of semiopragmatics, which brings together the theories of illocution and dialogism with narrative semiotics. The interest in an intersection between these theoretical models is to represent the perlocutionary transformation operated by the speech acts in different phases of Greimas’ narrative scheme, and to understand how the dialogic instances, by means of their enunciative postures, contribute to the performativity of the speech acts. This modelling also allows us to account for the existence of an implicit component of the institutional discourse and for the latency of certain speech acts in this kind of discourse. In our corpus, a text produced by The Mission of information on Islam in France, we aim at tracing the intertextual genesis of the discourse of expertise – and at showing that the performative power of the institutional subject passes through the non-inscription of the subject in the enunciation. Indeed, the ideologies that are transiting in the expert discourse through the voice of another are not so much summoned in a heuristic concern as to legitimize this performative power. 26. Discours et psychotropes.
- Author
-
Feys, Jean-Louis
- Abstract
Caregivers in the mental health field deal mainly with patients' thoughts; their primary access to these thoughts is listening to what the patient says. It is important to distinguish the dimension of utterance from that of enunciation. This also applies to the prescription of psychotropic drugs. This article aims to return the issue of discourse to the center of mental health concerns and to draw the attention of psychiatrists and other caregivers to the concept of enunciation, in the case of psychotherapy but also for the prescription of psychotropic drugs. The article takes a detour through linguistics by retracing the field's evolution: from associationism and the brain regions associated with ideas to structural linguistics and, more recently, to the emergence of the distinction between utterance and enunciation. This distinction shakes up the discipline by introducing the questions of subject and truth. The article then addresses the influence of linguistics in psychiatry and recalls that the question of enunciation was already present in the works of Jacques Schotte and Jacques Lacan. The psychiatric tradition has not sufficiently taken the question of enunciation into account. Psychiatric semiology has mainly been limited to patients' utterances and behaviors. Schotte, and especially Lacan, attempted to formalize enunciation and dealt with consubstantial questions: the subject and the truth. How could psychiatry integrate the question of enunciation into its semiology? Does a typology of discourse allow us to establish a semiology of enunciation? Does care (therapy, psychotropic drugs, etc.) focus more on utterance or enunciation? Psychotropic drugs are not, in themselves, treatment for mental illness. Their effect is on the person's enunciation and possibly on his or her utterances. The duration and dose of psychotropic drugs is to be modulated by listening carefully to patients' discourse. Psychotropic drugs can act on the possibilities of speech; they must free speech in such a way that a thought (delirious, obsessive, melancholic, or other) ceases to be embarrassing or invasive. ENUNCIATION ,FILM studies ,FILM theory ,DISCOURSE ,NARRATION - Abstract
In this paper, we address the problematic of film narration and its narrator from a re-reading of Émile Benveniste's theory of enunciation in open discussion with both the theories of film enunciation that have derived from it, and the cognitive theories that, by discarding it, have tried to take its place. This has led us to a differentiation between two dimensions of the problem of enunciation that are usually ignored: that which separates the act of enunciation and the subject who performs it from that of the textual subjects (the enunciator, the narrator ...) who inscribe that act in the text. An erroneous understanding of the modes of enunciation of story and discourse has derived from their ignorance, which has led to reducing the former to a kind of form that derives from the latter, constituting no more than a form of discourse that would hide its basis. A precise enunciative definition of the lie is derived from their conscience. Certainly, there is always a subject of the act of enunciation whose traces can be recognized in the materiality of the statement. But there is a properly ontological distance that separates them – as material traces – from the enunciator, as a purely formal textual figure that, by being that, may or may not be present in the text. In this way, the Benveniste's affirmation can be sustained according to which the story, the pure mode of the narrative, so to speak, is characterized by the absence – not the erasure, nor the invisibility – of any enunciator. While the term "economy" could suggest a certain homogeneity in the French press, we note that from one newspaper to another, the notion of "economy", or even the idea of "economy", is particularly diverse. We propose to question ourselves on some invariants of this type of discourse as well at the enunciative as lexical level. We will try to identify, through this questioning, some specificities of what could be called the media economic discourse. Our study focuses on the sections of the French national daily press that are devoted to the economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DISCOURSE analysis , *READING promotion , *LITERACY , *CULTURAL history , *ENUNCIATION , *TWENTIETH century - Abstract
In this article, we carry out an analysis of discourses of reading promotion in texts that circulated in the Brazilian printed media at the beginning of the twentieth century, where there is the project and activities of the Brazilian League against Illiteracy, founded in 1915. The League actions and projects' enunciation indicates both discourses then in effect about Brazilian reading and readers and shared representations regarding the encouragement of this practice. Our goal is to describe some of those representations and their fomentation that guide the League creators' actions. For this purpose, we are supported by some principles of the Discourse Analysis and the Cultural History of Reading. Besides the consensus that still exists on Brazilians permanent reading deficit, we noticed a re-emergence of the proselytizing discourse in the reading promotion, assumed by that institution as a "holy crusade". OPERATOR functions , *DISCOURSE markers , *DISCOURSE , *GRAMMATICALIZATION , *INTELLIGIBILITY of speech - Abstract
No es por X pero Y is a Spanish structure that can appear combined with an adversative sentence and anticipates a possible misinterpretation by the listener. It acts as a semi-fixed construction. It respects the communicative intention of the speaker and mitigates the negative effects that what is said can have on his/her social image. At the same time, when no es por nada appears as an independent form in a peripheral position or as a reactive turn, it functions as an assertion enhancer with sentence mobility. This function as a discourse operator reveals a grammaticalization process of cooptation that is not yet completed as it still coexists with the free construction. • No es por X acts as an enunciative preface in a construction with pero + sentence. • This preface mitigates the negative effects that what is said can have on the speaker's social face. • No es por nada appears in construction with pero + sentence as a mitigating phrase. • No es por nada also acts as an enunciative-argumentative operator: an assertion enhancer with sentence mobility. We define the object of this study as a product of enunciation. It is the elements accessible in it that reveal the enunciator's strategies in the construction of the actor of enunciation, which emerges, basically, from the enunciative-argumentative operations between enunciator and enunciatee, and from the way the narrative structures assume concreteness and corporeality through figurative and thematic investments. From the analysis of these elements, it emerged, in the analyzed discourse, the head of State aware of his role as a leader in building world peace. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

this article presents, from a holistic point of view, an integrative proposal with different conceptual tools to undertake the study of objects in discourse considering their social production. To accomplish this, the relationship between discourse and society is explored, focusing on the tension between reproduction and transformation that runs through the object. From this reflection, notions such as power, language, intertextuality, statement, enunciation or subject are deepened. As a conclusion, a series of axes that can guide the analysis of objects in discourse by virtue of the phenomena and research objectives pursued are provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Not all claims for 'racial justice' are created equal. While 'racial justice' became an important term deployed by various sport figures and organisations, there have been few deliberations of its actual meanings and/or connotations. I argue that the underlying goals, visions, and theories of change of different 'racial justice' enunciations can vary significantly and that it is therefore urgent to unpick the seemingly assumed coherence across different discursive spaces. In this reflective piece, I tentatively map the possible interpretations of 'racial justice' enunciated in sport and discuss the potentials and limitations of this term in the long struggles towards creating a (sport) world free of racial injustices. CRITICAL discourse analysis , *COMMON sense , *ETHNOGRAPHIC analysis , *GEOPOLITICS , *ENUNCIATION - Abstract
The work describes the struggle for representation and search for Central American migrants who disappeared in their transit through Mexico, in which state, criminal and social actors participate. Among the latter, the Committees of Relatives of Missing Migrants stand out. Objective The article aims to show how from a state knowledge-power (technical and statistical), a notion of disappearance is built that hides its structural dimension and tries to settle in common sense, while it is confronted by strategies of visibility of organizations of relatives that represent disappearance not as isolated figures (official discourse), but from systematic absence and as part of a broader social pain. Method From a qualitative and critical perspective, data generated through ethnographic and documentary fieldwork during 2014-2015 in Honduras and Mexico are analyzed. These are approached through critical discourse analysis and an ethnographic and political reconstruction of the strategic deployment of the Committees of Relatives of Missing Migrants. Results The phenomenon of the disappearance of migrants takes place in a transnational field in which dynamics of mobility and circulation of people and things are disputed, and which is defined by state, geopolitical, criminal and cultural dynamics associated with the actions of narco-state actors. Conclusions The irruption of the Committees of Relatives of Disappeared Migrants in the transnational field implies strategies of territorialization, incidence and search, as well as forms of enunciation that directly answer the official representations about the phenomenon of the disappearance of migrants. 40. How Fast is Furious The Discourse of Fast Cinema in Question.

DISCOURSE ,ENUNCIATION - Abstract
Considered in its articulation with an idea of “slow” cinema, the label “fast cinema” suggests three characteristics: fast-paced action, hyperkinetic cinematic style, and irreflexive consumption. Not only does fast cinema suggest these three characteristics, however, it also suggests that they directly correspond to each other so that, in a “fast” film, fast-paced action would be seamlessly rendered through “fast” cinematic enunciation and this rendering would necessarily result in an escapist, ready-to-consume film product. It is more by this correspondence, I think, than by any of these elements on its own that a certain understanding of “fast” cinema is established. Against this understanding, through a variety of contrasting examples, the article argues that the impression of fastness and that of slowness are both the matter of a tension between different temporalities and a complex combination of heterogeneous film elements, and that the articulation of “fast” and “slow” cinema itself depends less on the formal characteristics of different kinds of film than on a disciplinary understanding of spectatorship, which pretends to derive from these formal characteristics different and unequal forms of film experience. CORPORATE websites , *MINING corporations , *DISCOURSE analysis , *IRON ores , *ECONOMIC expansion - Abstract
Vale S.A. mining company is a transnational company, present in 30 countries, and one of the largest mining companies in the world. In the Brazilian Amazon, it has operated for more than three decades, mainly with the Grande Carajás Program and recently with the S11D Project, a project to expand iron ore extraction activities in the Serra de Carajás, in the state of Pará. Through Discourse and Enunciation Analysis (VERÓN, 2004), this research examines how the discourses produced on the mining company's website are constructed in the page entitled "S11D Eliezer Batista Complex", based on the development ideals disclosed by the company. The S11D is considered by critics in the mining sector to be the continuation of the PGC, now with the prospect of doubled profits. The analysis considered that the mining company contributes to the construction of ideals on development in the Amazon, based on the idea of economic growth, ignoring the discourses that represent the territories and social subjects of the region where it operates. - Abstract
In this article, I intend to develop the hypothesis that there are two ways of thinking about the phenomenon of precariousness. The first way consists in taking the vulnerable as what prevents the realization of a life project, when it arises in any field. The second way of dealing with precariousness is to conceive it not as what prevents, but as what is a crucial part of the uncertain, and indeterminate realization of a life. In these terms, precariousness is the feature of what moves between doing and not doing. The aim is to follow the marks of precariousness or vulnerability that are produced, in certain modes of discourse, in the field of film narratives about the lives of singers. I want to analyze a case of cine-biography, among many others, where acts and practices of life erode the voice and put it at risk. Here the object of analysis is the filmic narration on the tragic story of the British singer Amy Winehouse: Amy, by Asif Kaadia, 2015. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENUNCIATION , *SOCIAL influence , *DISCOURSE , *DISCOURSE analysis , *PRONOUNS (Grammar) - Abstract
The theory of enunciation has always made one consider three perspectives: a) that suggested by Benveniste, of enunciation as an individual speech act, with emphasis on the locutor producing the utterance; b) the postulation of an allocutor, the recipient of the utterance; c) the creation of enunciative signs which exist only in and through enunciation. Analyses have pragmatically shown the importance of subjectivity in language, as we have pointed out in the automatic analysis of the first-person pronouns. It is the subtle game of the form 'I' with the plural 'we', which constantly relates antagonistically to an antagonistic plural 'you', that the capture of the audience's goodwill lies in. Bakhtin would consider enunciation as a purely social object. This trend would strongly influence the French intellectual Left. Not even M. Foucault could ignore the influence of the social or historical factor in the discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the theoretical contributions of the Theory of Argumentation in Language (TAL) in its most recent phase the Theory of Semantic Blocks (TBS), this study aims to analyze the meanings constructed discursively in texts of Veja magazine covers, through semantic blocks expressed by argumentative sequences of the type DC (donc) or PT (pourtant). In order to carry out the corpus analysis, we rely on the Theory of Argumentation in Language (TAL) developed by Oswald Ducrot and collaborators (Anscombre & Ducrot, 1994, Carel & Ducrot, 1999, 2005, Ducrot, 1988, 2002), especially with regard to the current phase developed by Marion Carel (Carel & Ducrot, 1999, 2005, Carel & Gomes, 2019), the Theory of Semantic Blocks (TBS). This theory is based on the premise that the meaning of a linguistic entity is constituted by certain discourses that the entity evokes, denominated argumentative sequences united by a connector in DC (donc) or PT (pourtant). This study is characterized as exploratory and bibliographic with a qualitative approach. The selected corpus consists of two covers of the Veja magazine published during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of the analysis allowed to observe that TAL, in its current version TBS, is effective in contributing to interpret an enunciation with several possible meanings and not always explicit, since the argumentative meaning is constructed discursively by the formation of semantic blocks. DISCOURSE analysis , *WORLD War II , *DISCURSIVE practices , *WOMEN employees , *ENUNCIATION - Abstract
This article analyzes the discourses produced by the famous yellow background poster with the image of a working woman and the title We can do it!. Created in the World War II and repeated by the feminisms in the 1980s and 2010s, the poster produces discourses that relate to different historical conjunctures. We propose an analysis of discourses about the women's strenght, materialized by the verbvisual utterances, in order to understand how historical conditions of possibility motivate the enunciation of women's capacity at different times. Affiliated to the Foucauldian Discourse Analysis, a field that investigates the discursive practices and the formation of objects and subjectivities, this work mobilizes the concepts of utterance, archive, and event. The analysis demonstrates that the image's conditions of return modify the formation rules of theses discourses. Therefore, historical discontinuities determine the repetitions of this utterance as unique and singular events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
