AbstractIn the digital age, human-algorithm interaction has become ubiquitous. The popularity of short-form video apps has led to greater access to and experience with algorithmic recommender systems, but it has also exposed their potential problems and dark sides. However, there is still limited knowledge about the dark side of over-recommendation from the perspective of user perception, especially regarding the negative impact on users’ psychology and behavior. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study constructed a theoretical model to investigate how information environment factors influence users’ cognitive dissonance and discontinuance intention under the antecedent dimension of perceived over-recommendation. The model was tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling on 322 valid questionnaires from users of Chinse mass short video apps (eg, Douyin). The results showed that when users perceived over-recommendation, information narrowing, information redundancy, perceived overload, and privacy invasion significantly increased their cognitive dissonance, ultimately leading to discontinuance intention. Notably, cognitive dissonance fully mediated the relationship between the information environment and discontinuance intention, and self-efficacy did not play a significant moderating role. Additionally, the local path effects varied significantly across groups with different characteristics. To maintain the sustainability of short video platforms, it is crucial to explore moderate recommendation mechanisms. User-centered functionality improvements and differentiated behavioral interventions can help mitigate negative psychology and discontinuance intention among users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract\nPoints of interestHuman visual experience is increasingly mediated. As technology facilitates the sharing of diverse images, understanding the world through photography and videos is crucial. However, visuality affects the digital existence of communities with visual impairments. Focusing on the short-video consumption of individuals with visual impairments, this study examines their media experiences in a visually dominant society. Considering its social and technical setting, China is the ideal research site. Using constructivist grounded theory, we implemented open coding on raw data, highlighting initial categories associated with the usage of short-video applications. Contrary to the perception that those with visual impairments are more likely to use auditory-focused devices, we found that this population uses short video apps for entertainment, work, and social interactions and found design barriers and limited accessibility to be additional challenges. Background: Short videos are becoming increasingly popular globally, and users are devoting more time to viewing them. However, few studies have examined the characteristics of short video content and the technical features that are related to media use. The present study developed a model to explore the influence of technological affordances on short video usage and considered innovation in terms of format, setting, and content. Method: A total of 496 viewers of short videos from China were surveyed. The participants completed 31 Likert-scale items. The study used maximum likelihood estimation modeling. Results: The results revealed that perceived novelty and content value (entertainment and irritation) affected immersion positively, consequently influencing intentions for reuse and recommendation. The ease of navigating an application, narrative structure, and information value had no significant effect on immersion. Conclusion: These findings have confirmed that perceived situation affordance and the affective affordance of short videos in digital environments that are managed by intelligent algorithms.
