We give a geometric interpretation for superconformal quantum mechanics defined on a hyper-Kähler cone which has an equivariant symplectic resolution. BPS states are identified with certain twisted Dolbeault cohomology classes on the resolved space and their index degeneracies can also be related to the Euler characteristic computed in equivariant sheaf cohomology. In the special case of the Hilbert scheme of K points on ℂ2, we obtain a rigorous estimate for the exponential growth of the index degeneracies of BPS states as K → ∞. This growth serves as a toy model for our recently proposed duality between a seven dimensional black hole and superconformal quantum mechanics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We construct Poisson bracket relations between the operators which generate the chiral ring of the Coulomb branch of certain 3d N = 4 quiver gauge theories. In the case where the Coulomb branch is a free space, ADE Klein singularity, or the minimal A2 nilpotent orbit, we explicitly compute the Poisson brackets between the generators using either inherited properties of the abstract Coulomb branch variety, or the expected charges of these operators under the global symmetry (known through use of the monopole formula). We also conjecture Poisson brackets for Higgs branches that originate from 6d theories with tensionless strings or 5d theories with massless instantons for which the HWG is known, based on representation theoretic and operator content constraints known from the study of their magnetic quiver. The 2d (0, 2) supersymmetric gauge theories corresponding to the classes of Yp,k(ℂℙ1× ℂℙ1) and Yp,k(ℂℙ2) manifolds are identified. The complex cones over these Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds are non-compact toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These infinite families of geometries are the largest ones for Sasaki-Einstein 7-manifolds whose metrics, toric diagrams, and volume functions are known explicitly. We propose magnetic quivers for partial implosion spaces. Such partial implosions involve a choice of parabolic subgroup, with the Borel subgroup corresponding to the standard implosion. In the subregular case we test the conjecture by verifying that reduction by the Levi group gives the appropriate nilpotent orbit closure. In the case of a parabolic corresponding to a hook diagram we are also able to carry out this verification provided we work at nonzero Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study in detail the Schrödinger equation corresponding to the four dimensional SU(2) N = 2 SQCD theory with one flavour. We calculate the Voros symbols, or quantum periods, in four different ways: Borel summation of the WKB series, direct computation of Wronskians of exponentially decaying solutions, the TBA equations of Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke/Gaiotto, and instanton counting. We make computations by all of these methods, finding good agreement. We also study the exact quantization condition for the spectrum, and we compute the Fredholm determinant of the inverse of the Schrödinger operator using the TS/ST correspondence and Zamolodchikov's TBA, again finding good agreement. In addition, we explore two aspects of the relationship between singularities of the Borel transformed WKB series and BPS states: BPS states of the 4d theory are related to singularities in the Borel transformed WKB series for the quantum periods, and BPS states of a coupled 2d+4d system are related to singularities in the Borel transformed WKB series for local solutions of the Schrödinger equation. We propose quivers for Coulomb branch constructions of universal implosions for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending the work on special unitary groups in [1]. The quivers are unitary-orthosymplectic as opposed to the purely unitary quivers in the A-type case. Where possible we check our proposals using Hilbert series techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Canonical threefold singularities in M-theory and Type IIB string theory give rise to superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in 5d and 4d, respectively. In this paper, we study canonical hypersurface singularities whose resolutions contain residual terminal singularities and/or 3-cycles. We focus on a certain class of 'trinion' singularities which exhibit these properties. In Type IIB, they give rise to 4d N = 2 SCFTs that we call D p b (G)-trinions, which are marginal gaugings of three SCFTs with G flavor symmetry. In order to understand the 5d physics of these trinion singularities in M-theory, we reduce these 4d and 5d SCFTs to 3d N = 4 theories, thus determining the electric and magnetic quivers (or, more generally, quiverines). In M-theory, residual terminal singularities give rise to free sectors of massless hypermultiplets, which often are discretely gauged. These free sectors appear as 'ugly' components of the magnetic quiver of the 5d SCFT. The 3-cycles in the crepant resolution also give rise to free hypermultiplets, but their physics is more subtle, and their presence renders the magnetic quiver 'bad'. We propose a way to redeem the badness of these quivers using a class S realization. We also discover new S-dualities between different D p b (G)-trinions. For instance, a certain E8 gauging of the E8 Minahan-Nemeschansky theory is S-dual to an E8-shaped Lagrangian quiver SCFT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluate half-indices of N = (2, 2) half-BPS boundary conditions in 3d N = 4 supersymmetric Abelian gauge theories. We confirm that the Neumann boundary condition is dual to the generic Dirichlet boundary condition for its mirror theory as the half-indices perfectly match with each other. We find that a naive mirror symmetry between the exceptional Dirichlet boundary conditions defining the Verma modules of the quantum Coulomb and Higgs branch algebras does not always hold. The triangular matrix obtained from the elliptic stable envelope describes the precise mirror transformation of a collection of half-indices for the exceptional Dirichlet boundary conditions. We revisit the duality between five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories and deformations of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory from a new perspective. We give a unified treatment of supersymmetric gauge theories in three and five dimensions using cohomological localization techniques and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. We survey various known results in a unified framework and provide simplified derivations of localization formulas, as well as various extensions including the case of irregular Seifert fibrations. We describe the reductions to four-dimensional gauge theories, and give an extensive description of the dual two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory when the three-dimensional part of the geometry is a squashed three-sphere, including its extension to non-zero area, and a detailed analysis of the resulting matrix model. The squashing parameter b yields a further deformation of the usual q-deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, which for rational values b2 = p/s yields a new correspondence with Chern-Simons theory on lens spaces L(p, s). In this work we give a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) realization of pairs of homologically projective dual Calabi-Yaus that have recently been constructed in the mathematics literature. Many of the geometries can be realized mathematically in terms of joins. We discuss how joins can be described in terms of GLSMs and how the associated Calabi-Yaus arise as phases in the GLSMs. Due to strong-coupling phenomena in the GLSM, the geometries are realized via a mix of perturbative and non-perturbative effects. We apply two-dimensional gauge dualities to construct dual GLSMs. Geometries that are realized perturbatively in one GLSM, are realized non-perturbatively in the dual, and vice versa. We begin with an E8 x E8 Heterotic model broken to an SU(5)gauge and a mirror SU(5)gauge, where one SU(5) and its spectrum is identified as the visible sector while the other can be identified as a hidden mirror world. In both cases we obtain the minimal supersymmetric standard model spectrum after Wilson-line symmetry-breaking enhanced by a low energy R-parity enforced by a local (or global) U(1)x-symmetry. Using Heterotic/F-theory duality, we show how to eliminate the vector-like exotics which were obtained in previous constructions. In these constructions, the Calabi-Yau [CY] four-fold was defined by an elliptic fibration with section over a base B3 and a GUT surface given by K3/ℤ2 = Enriques surface. In the present paper we construct a quotient CY four-fold fibered by tori with two elliptic structures given by a pair of sections fibered over the Enriques surface. Using Heterotic/F-theory duality we are able to define the cohomologies used to derive the massless spectrum. Our model for the 'correct' F-theory dual of a Heterotic model with Wilson-line symmetry-breaking builds on prior literature but employs the stack-theoretic version of the dictionary between the Heterotic semi-stable Es-bundles with Yang-Mills connection and the dP9-fibrations used to construct the F-theory dual.
