Abstract

Multifunctional molecular materials combining magnetic, luminescent and dielectric properties are attractive for potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. Herein we report three isostructural mononuclear lanthanide phosphonates, namely, Ln(NO3)3(2‐deap)3 [Ln=Dy (1Dy), Er (2Er), Yb (3Yb), 2‐deap=diethyl anthrancen‐2‐ylphosphonate] which crystallize in polar space group Pna21. Magnetic studies revealed field‐induced slow magnetization relaxation for 1Dy and 3Yb, but not for 2Er down to 1.8 K. Theoretical calculations were conducted to rationalize the magneto‐structural relationship. The photoluminescent properties are also dependent on the lanthanide ion. For 1Dy, luminescence was observed only in the visible region mainly originating from the ligand. For 2Er, luminescence was observed only in the near‐infrared (NIR) region due to a complete energy transfer from the ligand to the ErIII ion. Regarding to 3Yb, luminescence was observed in both visible and NIR regions suggesting a partial energy transfer from the ligand to YbIII ion. Dielectric and piezoelectric measurements were performed on single crystals of 3Yb, which confirmed the presence of high dielectric anisotropy and weak piezoelectric response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Cubic perovskite-related ceramic CaCu3Ti4O12 has a very high dielectric constant larger than 10000 in the kilohertz frequency region. It is almost constant in the 100–600 K region. The ceramic compounds were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction at different sintering temperatures 1040 degrees C(C04), 1060 degrees C(C06), 1080 degrees C(C08), and 1100 degrees C(C10). Impedance spectroscopy on CaCusTi4O12 ceramics demonstrates that they are electrically heterogeneous and consist of semi-conducting grains with insulating grain boundaries. It is shown that C06 is the most suitable one for device applications. Surface observation and analysis of the grain-boundary-grained structure were carried out by using scanning electron microscopy, which confirms that the samples have clearly different crystal grain sizes and C06 has a larger grain size of about 20 μm. Compared to the dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, the mechanical relaxation spectroscopy on C06 was performed and a mechanical loss peak was found, which was attributed to the thermally activated behaviour being immanent in the grains.

3. Structural, Ferroelectric, Dielectric Properties and Leakage Characteristics of Neodymium-Doped Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 Thin Films Prepared by Metalorganic Deposition Method

Abstract

Thin films of Nd3+-substituted Bi3.15Nd0.85Ti3O12 (BNT) were fabricated on the (111)Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by a metalorganic deposition (MOD) technique. These thin films are possessed of a single-phase bismuth-layered structure showing the preferred (001) and (117) orientation. The values of the remanent polarization Pr and coercive field Ec of the BNT thin film are 27 μC/cm2 and 157 kV/cm, respectively. The results of fatigue and retention tests revealed that the BNT thin film was not fatigued up to 1.44×1010 switching cycles and the retained charge was unchanged after 1×105 s. The leakage current behaviour of the BNT thin film was investigated at room temperature and their conduction mechanisms were also discussed. The I–V characteristics of the film show the ohmic behaviour for applied field lower than 40 kV/cm. Nonlinearity in the I–V behaviour was observed at an applied field above 40 kV/cm. In the high field region (E>95 kV/cm) the sample shows Schottky emission.
