In eight of ten dogs with Heidenhain pouches gastric hypersecretion and diarrhea developed after colectomy with ileoproctostomy. Similar results were obtained in all three dogs which had been subjected to antrectomy previously. Neither diarrhea nor large increases in gastric secretion developed after colonic bypass by means of end to side ileoproctostomy in three dogs with Heidenhain pouches. The observed increases in pouch secretion could not be accounted for on the basis of gastric retention, measurable impairment of liver function, or abnormal serum electrolyte values.
