Recent advances in clinical prediction for diarrhoeal aetiology in low- and middle-income countries have revealed that the addition of weather data to clinical data improves predictive performance. However, the optimal source of weather data remains unclear. We aim to compare the use of model estimated satellite- and ground-based observational data with weather station directly observed data for the prediction of aetiology of diarrhoea. We used clinical and etiological data from a large multi-centre study of children with moderate to severe diarrhoea cases to compare their predictive performances. We show that the two sources of weather conditions perform similarly in most locations. We conclude that while model estimated data is a viable, scalable tool for public health interventions and disease prediction, given its ease of access, directly observed weather station data is likely adequate for the prediction of diarrhoeal aetiology in children in low- and middle-income countries.

Background and Aims: Diarrhoea is one of the deadliest diseases and causing death among children in India, but no systematic attempt is made to understand it especially its control using oral rehydration salts (ORS). It is well known that use of ORS and Zinc have been effective in containing diarrhoea among children. An attempt is made using large scale national data set in India to understand use of ORS and Zinc to control diarrhoea and their associated factors among diarrhoeal children under five in India., Methods: Publicly available most recent cross-sectional National Family Health Survey data in India was used for the study. The multi-stage cluster sampling design was used with 2011 Census of India as a sampling frame. Households were selected using a Systematic Random Sampling design from selected primary sampling units in rural and urban clusters. From the selected households, the eligible children were those who suffered from diarrhoea in the two weeks preceding the survey and were less than 5 years old. Using this criterion, out of 232,920 children in the survey of less than five years, 16,213 sample diarrheal children found to be available for the study. Both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used to analyse the data., Results: Across India, 61% and 31% of the children were given ORS and Zinc respectively. However, combined ORS + Zinc treatment was only around 24%. The treatment of ORS, Zinc, and combined ORS + Zinc supplementations were significantly higher among younger children, children of 24-35 age group mothers, children from rich wealth index groups, belong to Hindu religion and general caste compared to their counterparts. The logistic regression results showed that consumption of ORS among diarrhoeal children under five years of age depends upon size of a child at birth. For instance, diarrheal children who were very small size at birth compared to very large at birth, had 39% lower odds of consuming ORS (AOR = 0.61; CI 0.48, 0.78; p<0.001). Another important variable is place of first treatment sought for diarrheal children. That is children who first sought treatment in private hospital compared to government hospital had 52% lower odds of ORS consumption. The logistic regression adjusted AORs are similar with Zinc and ORS + Zinc supplementations., Conclusions: To improve the coverage and management of childhood diarrhoea in India, planning activities should focus not only on distribution, and increasing knowledge of ORS preparation especially for urban slum residents and rural disadvantaged groups through demonstration. Objectives: To highlight the importance of neglected Entamoeba histolytica ( E. histolytica ) infections in the geriatric age group, which is an increasing proportion of the world's population., Methods: This study was carried out between January 2022 and December 2023 at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, Faculty of Medicine, Parasitology Laboratory, Van, Turkey. The study included 96 geriatric patients with diarrhea (geriatric group). Two different control groups (CGs) were also included in the study, comprising 92 patients aged 18-64 years with diarrhea as CG1 and 50 geriatric individuals without diarrhea and other gastrointestinal complaints as CG2. Samples were analysed macroscopically and then evaluated by microscopic, enzyme-linked immunoassay, and polymerase chain reaction., Results: This study detected E. histolytica in 31.3% of the geriatric group and 14.1% of the patients in CG1 ( p =0.004). Entamoeba histolytica positivity was not detected in CG2. According to the multiple correspondence analysis, there was a close association between E. histolytica positivity and bloody diarrhea and mucous diarrhea in the geriatric patients. It was also determined that E. histolytica can cause abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and epigastric tenderness in geriatric patients., Conclusion: Both the risk of E. histolytica infection and the pathogenicity of the infection increase in geriatric individuals. Campylobacteriosis and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are global public health concerns. Africa is estimated to have the world's highest incidence of campylobacteriosis and a relatively high prevalence of AMR in Campylobacter spp. from humans and animals. Few studies have compared Campylobacter spp. isolated from humans and poultry in Africa using whole-genome sequencing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We explored the population structure and AMR of 178 Campylobacter isolates from East Africa, 81 from patients with diarrhea in Kenya and 97 from 56 poultry samples in Tanzania, collected during 2006-2017. Sequence type diversity was high in both poultry and human isolates, with some sequence types in common. The estimated prevalence of multidrug resistance, defined as resistance to >3 antimicrobial classes, was higher in poultry isolates (40.9%, 95% credible interval 23.6%-59.4%) than in human isolates (2.5%, 95% credible interval 0.3%-6.8%), underlining the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in livestock systems.

Objectives: Globally, billions of people do not have access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation services. Interventions to improve drinking water, sanitation and hygiene could reduce the incidence of diarrhoea in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate the association between these services and the incidence of diarrhoea., Study Design: Worldwide, ecological observational study, utilising cross-sectional data., Methods: Data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 and World Bank were used in this study. Diarrhoeal disease episodes were defined as three or more loose bowel movements within 24 h. Estimated Annual Percentage Change was used to quantify trends in disease incidence over a specific time interval. Quasi-Poisson Generalised Linear Model was introduced to analyse the influence of basic drinking water and sanitation services on the incidence of diarrhoea. Subgroup analyses were carried out to determine potential variations in the incidence of diarrhoeal diseases according to sex, age and sociodemographic index (SDI) region., Results: Between 2000 and 2019, the incidence rate of global diarrhoea remained consistent, with regional variations linked to SDIs. A 1% increase in access to basic drinking water was associated with a 0.41% (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.33%-0.50%) increase in the age-standardised incidence rate of diarrhoea; meanwhile, a 1% increase in sanitation service usage was associated with a 0.47% (95% CI, 0.40%-0.54%) reduction in the age-standardised incidence rate of diarrhoea. The correlation differed across SDI regions. The use of safely managed drinking water was associated with a reduction in diarrhoeal disease rates, but the effect was non-significant in High SDI regions. Higher diarrhoeal disease incidence was seen in younger and older populations. Individuals in the age groups 55-59 years and 10-14 years showed the greatest association of water service usage with diarrhoea, while an increase in sanitation service usage was related to decreased diarrhoea rates in most age groups, excluding children aged 5-14 years., Conclusions: Emphasising initiatives to enhance water quality, elevate the standards of drinking water safety management, and strengthening related infrastructure development in global health policies and development plans could have a positive impact on overall global health. Introduction: Bile acid diarrhea (BAD) is an underrecognized and socially debilitating disease caused by high concentrations of bile acids in the colon. Bile acids directly and indirectly promote carcinogenesis. In this article, we investigated whether individuals with BAD have an increased risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers., Methods: By using the Danish health registries, adult individuals with BAD were identified by International Classification of Diseases 10th revision code K90.8 or referral to the diagnostic ⁷⁵selenium-homotaurocholic acid test followed by prescription of a bile acid sequestrant within 365 days (n = 5,245). Age- and sex-matched individuals without BAD were included for comparison (n = 52,450). We analyzed the cumulative incidence of GI cancers after BAD diagnosis and the odds ratios (ORs) of GI cancer 8 and 15 years before BAD diagnosis/matching., Results: Cumulative incidence of GI cancer 6 years after BAD diagnosis/matching was 1.6% in the BAD group and 1.1% in controls ( P = 0.01). The ORs of total GI cancer 8 and 15 years before BAD diagnosis were 6.16 (5.08-7.48) and 5.19 (4.28-6.29), respectively. Furthermore, 47 individuals with BAD (0.9%) and 250 (0.5%) controls died of GI cancer., Discussion: This nationwide cohort study indicates an association between BAD and GI cancers. We found both a higher incidence of GI cancer after BAD diagnosis compared with controls and increased OR of GI cancer before BAD diagnosis. Bearing in mind the underdiagnosis of BAD, the delay of BAD diagnosis, and the carcinogenic effect of bile acids, these findings warrant further investigations of the risk of GI cancer in individuals with BAD., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). Background: Diarrheal disease is still the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children, despite significant progress in diarrhea interventions. Zoonotic transmission is the main cause of the emergence and re-emergence of diseases. Domestic animals are often close to humans, particularly in resource-poor countries. Despite evidence of environmental contamination, there have been limited studies conducted to examine the association between domestic animal exposure and diarrheal disease in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis examines the association between domestic animal exposure and diarrheal disease in children under five years of age in LMIC., Methods: The search strategy followed PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines for the reporting of systematic reviews. All appropriate databases were searched to find relevant articles. Research studies were selected for review if they reported an outcome variable that measured diarrhea and exposure variables of any domestic animals. A data extraction form was used to extract information from each study. The quality of the individual articles was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI's) critical appraisal tools. Publication bias was checked using a funnel plot, Egger's regression test, and Begg's test. The heterogeneity of studies was checked using the Galbraith plot and the I-squared test. A sensitivity analysis was conducted, and a meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 17., Results: After reviewing 113 articles, 11 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria hence considered for meta-analysis. The finding of these 11 studies revealed that study participants who had animal exposure had 1.95 higher odds of diarrhea as compared to participants who hadn't animal exposure (OR: 1.95, 95%CI: 1.25, 2.66)., Conclusions and Recommendations: This study reported that diarrheal disease was associated with study subjects who had domestic animal exposure. Therefore, more comprehensive research is needed on specific behaviors and interventions surrounding animal husbandry that may affect the transmission of pathogens between animals and humans; this would facilitate the design and implementation of measures to reduce animal exposure in the domestic environment., (© 2024. Background: Noroviruses (NoVs) are the leading cause of diarrheal disease among all age groups worldwide, with an increased burden in developing countries. As there is no surveillance, epidemiological data is limited in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of NoV infection among patients with diarrhea in the Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia., Methods: A prospective health facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2021 to November 2021. A total of 550 study participants of all age groups with symptoms of diarrhea were proportionately assigned to the four study areas, area with three health facilities. Study participants were systematically sampled in each health facility. A fecal sample from each case was collected. The RNA was extracted and tested for NoV by one-step RT-PCR. Sociodemographic and other variables were gathered using a pre-tested questionnaire. A descriptive analysis was performed. Both binary and multiple logistic regressions were utilized to identify factors associated with NoV infection. Variables with a p-value < 0.05 in the final model were considered statistically significant., Results: Five hundred nineteen out of 550 samples were analyzed (94.4% response rate). The overall prevalence of NoV was 8.9% (46/519). The positivity rates were higher among the elderly (33.3%) and under-5 children (12.5%). Both genogroup I and genogroup II (GII) were identified, with GII being the predominant, at 82.6% (38/46). Of all participants, only 20% reported a history of vomiting. Norovirus infection was more prevalent among participants from Debre Tabor (AOR = 4, 95%CI: 1.2-14) and Bahir Dar areas (AOR = 3.6, 95%CI: 1.04-11) compared to Debre Markos. Additionally, older adults (AOR = 7, 95% CI: 2-24) and under-5 children (AOR = 3.5, 95% CI: 2.8-12) were disproportionately affected compared to adults. The previous history of diarrhea (AOR = 3.6, 95% CI: 1.7-7) was a significant factor contributing to NoV infections. Moreover, the odds of NoV infection were higher among individuals with a high frequency of diarrhea (AOR = 15.3, 95%CI: 7.6-43) and vomiting (AOR = 3.5, 95%CI: 1.5-8)., Conclusions: The prevalence of NoV was considerably high, with the predominance of NoV-GII. The positivity rate was higher among the extreme age groups and varied across the study areas. Background: A significant portion of the Muslim community participates in the Arba'een pilgrimage, with participant numbers increasing each year. There have been relatively few studies on the health of Arba'een Mass gathering (MG). Researching the prevalence and distribution of diseases among Arba'een pilgrims is essential to recognize any outbreaks and take timely responses to contain them. The current study aimed to identify exposures and risk factors for diarrheal disease in pilgrims who referred to the clinics located in Iraq among the Arba'een MG in 2023., Methods: This case-control study randomly selected 200 outpatients (100 cases and 100 controls) who were referred to Iraq clinics. Cases were patients with gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea), while controls were randomly selected from unaffected pilgrims at the same time for the cases. The study groups matched for age, and sex. Face-to-face interviews using a reliable field based checklist of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Iran's Ministry of Health to collect potential exposures and risk factors for diarrheal disease. Multiple logistic regression was used to estimate the crude and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for the risk of diarrhea with a 95% confidence interval (CI)., Results: The average age of the participants was 38.6 years. Diarrhea in 100% and fever in 81% were the most common clinical symptoms in patients. Having underlying diseases was not associated with an increased risk of diarrhea disease (P > 0.05). Regarding risk factors for diarrheal, the final analysis after adjusting for potential confounders indicated that consumption of insanitary (unpackaged) drinking water (AOR = 1.95; 95% CI: 1.05-3.6; P = 0.024), inappropriate hand washing (AOR = 3.82; 95% CI: 1.7-8.6; P = 0.001), ritual foods (AOR = 2.56; 95% CI: 1.3-5.2; P = 0.004), and public toilets (AOR = 1.46; 95% CI: 1.04-4.3; P = 0.038) were significantly increased the likelihood of diarrheal disease., Conclusions: Contamination of water sources, food, inadequate and poor hand washing were the most common sources of diarrheal diseases among Arba'een pilgrims. The results indicate that the potential occurrence of outbreaks, especially water- and foodborne diseases, threatens participants in the Arba'een MG. It is recommended to provide risk assessment, improve pilgrims' awareness, pre-and post-screening, vaccination, compliance with personal hygiene, improvement of the environment, provision of sanitary water and food sources and hygienic disposal of sewage, laboratory diagnosis to identify the common types of pathogens in Arba'een MG., (© 2024. Dhaka is one of the world's densely populated cities and faces significant public health challenges including high burden of diarrhoeal diseases. Climate change is intensifying existing environmental problems including urban heat island effect and poor water quality. While numerous epidemiological studies have linked meteorological factors to diarrhoeal diseases in Bangladesh, assessment of the impacts of future climate change on diarrhoeal diseases is scarce. We provide the assessment of climate change impacts on diarrhoeal disease in Dhaka and project future health risks under climate change scenarios. About 3 million acute diarrhoea cases presenting to the Dhaka Hospital of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research Bangladesh (icddr,b) during 1981-2010 were linked to daily temperature, rainfall and humidity and association investigated using time series adapted negative binomial regression models employing constrained distributed lag linear models. The findings were applied to climate projections to estimate future risks of diarrhoea under various global warming scenarios. There was a significantly raised risk of diarrhoea hospitalisation in all ages with daily mean temperature (RR: 3.4, 95% CI: 3.0-3.7) after controlling for the confounding effects of heavy rainfall, humidity, autocorrelations, day of the week effect, long-term time, and seasonal trends. Using the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 1.034, temperature increases based on the global warming targets of 1.5-2°C could result in an increase of diarrhoea hospitalisations by 4.5-7.4% in all age groups by the 2100s. These effects were more pronounced among <5 children where the predicted temperature increases could raise diarrhoea hospitalisation by 5.7% - 9.4%. Diarrhoea hospitalisation will increase significantly in Dhaka even if the global warming targets adopted by the Paris Agreement is reached. The diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) is the major cause of diarrheal diseases in Africa, including Ethiopia. However, the genetic diversity of E. coli pathotypes found in Ethiopia has not been studied well. This study aimed to characterize potential DEC belonging to enteropathogenic (EPEC), Shiga toxin-producing (STEC), enteroaggregative (EAEC), enterotoxigenic (ETEC), and enteroinvasive (EIEC) E. coli pathotypes from stool specimens of patients attending primary healthcare units ( n = 260) in Addis Ababa and Hossana using whole-genome sequencing. Real-time PCR assays were used to identify DEC isolates belonging to EPEC, STEC, EAEC, ETEC, and EIEC pathotypes, which were then subjected to whole-genome sequencing on the Illumina platform. Twenty-four whole-genome nucleotide sequences of DEC strains with good enough quality were analyzed for virulence-associated genes (VAGs), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), phylogenetic groups, serogroups, and sequence types. The majority (62.5%) of DEC isolates belonged to the phylogenetic group B1. The identified DEC isolates belonged to 21 different serogroups and 17 different sequence types. All tested DEC isolates carried multiple VAGs and ARGs. The findings highlight the high diversity in the population structure of the studied DEC isolates, which is important for designing targeted interventions to reduce the diarrheal burden in Ethiopia.

Objective: There are limited data in Ethiopia on common childhood illnesses. We aimed to measure the incidence and risk factors of common childhood illnesses in rural parts of southern Ethiopia., Design: A community-based cohort study., Participants and Study Setting: A total of 903 children of 5 years or younger were included between July 2017 and January 2018. We randomly selected households from three administrative units (kebeles) in Wonago district in Ethiopia., Outcomes: Data on incidence of illnesses were collected by interviewing the mothers of the children every second week, in 6 months. Incidence densities per child-week of observation were calculated, and predictors or recurrent illnesses were evaluated in multilevel Poisson regression models., Results: Out of 903 children, 882 were included (97.6%). At least one illness was experienced among 87.3% of the children. Overall illness incidence rate was 19.7 episodes per 100 child-weeks, 95% CI 18.4 to 20.7. The incidence rate of fever symptoms was 5.5 episodes per 100 child-weeks; of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) 4.2 episodes per 100 child-weeks; of diarrhoea, 3.4 episodes per 100 child-weeks. In the multilevel analysis, household wealth status, child age, child nutritional status, source of drinking water, place for cooking and number of children below 5 years of age in the household were main risk factors for illnesses., Conclusions: Children below 5 years of age in Ethiopia often experience fever, ARIs and diarrhoea. Objective: The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes is an important instrument to protect and promote appropriate infant and young child feeding and the safe use of commercial milk formulas. Ghana and Tanzania implemented the Code into national legislation in 2000 and 1994, respectively. We aimed to estimate the effects of the Code implementation on child mortality (CM) in both countries., Setting: The countries analysed were Ghana and Tanzania., Participants: For CM and HIV rates, data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation from up to 2019 were used. Data for income and skilled birth rates were retrieved from the World Bank, for fertility from the World Population Prospects, for vaccination from the Global Health Observatory and for employment from the International Labour Organization., Design: We used the synthetic control group method and performed placebo tests to assess statistical inference. The primary outcomes were CM by lower respiratory infections, mainly pneumonia, and diarrhoea and the secondary outcome was overall CM., Results: One-sided inference tests showed statistically significant treatment effects for child deaths by lower respiratory infections in Ghana ( P = 0·0476) and Tanzania ( P = 0·0476) and for diarrhoea in Tanzania ( P = 0·0476). More restrictive two-sided inference tests showed a statistically significant treatment effect for child deaths by lower respiratory infections in Ghana ( P = 0·0476). No statistically significant results were found for overall CM., Conclusion: The results suggest that the implementation of the Code in both countries had a potentially beneficial effect on CM due to infectious diseases; however, further research is needed to corroborate these findings.

Background: Diarrheal disease remains a significant public health issue, particularly affecting young children and older adults. Despite efforts to control and prevent these diseases, their incidence continues to be a global concern. Understanding the trends in diarrhea incidence and the factors influencing these trends is crucial for developing effective public health strategies., Objective: This study aimed to explore the temporal trends in diarrhea incidence and associated factors from 1990 to 2019 and to project the incidence for the period 2020-2040 at global, regional, and national levels. We aimed to identify key factors influencing these trends to inform future prevention and control strategies., Methods: The eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was used to predict the incidence from 2020 to 2040 based on demographic, meteorological, water sanitation, and sanitation and hygiene indicators. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) value was performed to explain the impact of variables in the model on the incidence. Estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to assess the temporal trends of age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) from 1990 to 2019 and from 2020 to 2040., Results: Globally, both incident cases and ASIRs of diarrhea increased between 2010 and 2019. The incident cases are expected to rise from 2020 to 2040, while the ASIRs and incidence rates are predicted to slightly decrease. During the observed (1990-2019) and predicted (2020-2040) periods, adults aged 60 years and above exhibited an upward trend in incidence rate as age increased, while children aged < 5 years consistently had the highest incident cases. The SHAP framework was applied to explain the model predictions. We identified several risk factors associated with an increased incidence of diarrhea, including age over 60 years, yearly precipitation exceeding 3000 mm, temperature above 20 °C for both maximum and minimum values, and vapor pressure deficit over 1500 Pa. A decreased incidence rate was associated with relative humidity over 60%, wind speed over 4 m/s, and populations with above 80% using safely managed drinking water services and over 40% using safely managed sanitation services., Conclusions: Diarrheal diseases are still serious public health concerns, with predicted increases in the incident cases despite decreasing ASIRs globally. Children aged < 5 years remain highly susceptible to diarrheal diseases, yet the incidence rate in the older adults aged 60 plus years still warrants additional attention. Additionally, more targeted efforts to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation services are crucial for reducing the incidence of diarrheal diseases globally.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have emerged as an integral component of the management of various cancers and have contributed to significant improvements in overall survival. Most available ICIs target anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (anti-CTLA4), and anti-programmed cell death 1/programmed cell death ligand 1 (anti-PD1/PDL1). Gastrointestinal immune-related adverse events remain a common complication of ICIs. The predominant manifestations include diarrhea and colitis, which often manifest concurrently as immune-mediated diarrhea and colitis (IMDC). Risk factors for developing these side effects include baseline gut microbiota, preexisting autoimmune disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease, and type of neoplasm. The hallmark symptom of colitis is diarrhea which may be accompanied by mucus or blood in stools. Patients may also experience abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and nausea. If not treated rapidly, ICI-induced colitis can lead to serious life-threatening complications. Current management is based on corticosteroids as first-line, and immunosuppressants like infliximab or vedolizumab for refractory cases. Microbiota transplantation and specific cytokines and lymphocyte replication inhibitors are being investigated. Optimal patient care requires maintaining a balance between treatment toxicity and efficacy, hence the aim of this review is to enhance readers' comprehension of the gastrointestinal adverse events associated with ICIs, particularly IMDC. Diarrhea is the second major source of ill health and pediatric death globally. It accounts for over 90% of loss of life in infants especially those below 5 years old in developing nations. Lack of quality water and good sanitation is the principal root of diarrhea. Poor nutritional status also increases the incidence of diarrhea. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 3 targets to put a stop to avoidable deaths among newborns and infants under 5 years old by the year 2030. Interestingly, SDG number 6 targets to ensure all-round and fair access to safe quality portable water, good sanitation, and proper hygiene for everyone by the year 2030. Unfortunately, South Asia and sub-Saharan African regions are centers of limited improved water and good sanitation facilities, thus explaining the increased morbidity and loss of life orchestrated by diarrhea in young children in these areas. Therefore, enhancing water quality, good sanitation, and proper hygiene is a pivotal interposition strategy to improve children's health and well-being and achieve SDG 3, especially in the fight against diarrhea. Purpose: The impact of cancer-related diarrhea (CRD) on changes in cancer therapy remains poorly characterized despite its prevalence., Methods: We performed a longitudinal observational study using IQVIA PharMetrics Plus claims data. Patients included adults with CRD identified by diagnosis codes or pharmacy claims and compared their outcomes to matched (1:1) patients without CRD. Treatment parameters (discontinuation, persistence, augmentation, dose titration, adherence) were evaluated and stratified for the first cancer therapy (chemotherapy vs. targeted therapy vs. both). A multivariate Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the difference in risk of each treatment parameter between cohorts, adjusting for cancer type, therapy, and comorbidities., Results: We identified 104,135 matched pairs of patients with solid (n = 94,411) or hematologic cancers (n = 9,724) receiving chemotherapy (n = 47,220), targeted therapy (n = 2,427), or both (n = 5,313). Patients with CRD discontinued therapy more frequently than those without CRD (chemotherapy [81.5% vs. 62.3%], targeted therapy [69.2% vs. 64.3%], both [96.0% vs. 85.5%], p < 0.0001). The overall proportion of discontinuation was higher (82.4% vs. 64.6%, p < 0.0001), including a higher risk of discontinuation (HR = 1.40, p < 0.001) for patients with CRD. The mean time to discontinuation (59.6 ± 54.1 vs. 68.3 ± 76.6 days), switch (72.0 ± 48.6 vs. 96.9 ± 84.0 days), persistence (95.1 ± 98.1 vs. 154.3 ± 142.7 days), and adherence (25.5% ± 37.2 vs. 47.9 ± 41%) were all lower (p < 0.0001) among patients with CRD., Conclusion: Patients who develop CRD undergo significant and clinically impactful index treatment discontinuation, treatment switching, and have lower adherence and persistence of anticancer therapy compared to patients without CRD. In this paper, we have provided more insights on the relationship between under five morbidity in Nigeria and some background characteristics using a Poisson regression model and the most recent 2018 NDHS data on Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI), diarrhoea and fever. Some of our results are that children 36-47 months old have the highest risk of ARI [OR = 1.45; CI (1.31,1.60)] while children less than 6 months old have the lowest risk of ARI [OR = 0.14; CI (0.11,0.17)]. The prevalence of diarrhoea is generally high among children under 48-59 months old but highest among children 6-11 months old [OR = 4.34; CI (3.69,5.09)]. Compared to children 48-59 months old, children in all other age categories except 24-34 months old have a high risk of fever [OR = 0.95; CI (0.73,1.24)]. ARI is more prevalent among female children [OR = 8.88; CI (8.02,9.82)] while diarrhoea [OR = 21.75; (19.10,24.76)] and fever [OR = 4.78; CI (4.31,5.32)] are more prevalent among male children. Children in urban areas are more likely to suffer ARI [OR = 9.49; CI (8.31,10.85)] while children in rural areas are more likely to suffer both diarrhoea [OR = 21.75; CI (19.10,24.76)] and fever [OR = 4.90; CI (4.26,5.63)]. Children in the South-South have the highest risk of ARI [OR = 4.03; CI (3.65,4.454)] while children in the North Central have the lowest risk of ARI [OR = 1.55; CI (1.38,1.74)] and highest risk of diarrhoea [OR = 3.34; CI (2.30,5.11)]. Children in the Northeast have the highest risk of fever [OR = 1.30; CI (1.14,1.48)]. In the Northcentral region, Kogi state has the highest prevalence of fever [OR = 2.27; CI (1.62,3.17)], while Benue state has the lowest [OR = 0.35; CI (0.20,0.60)]. Children in Abuja state face similar risks of fever and diarrhoea [OR = 0.84; CI (0.55,1.27)], with the risk of diarrhoea in Abuja being comparable to that in Plateau state [OR = 1.57; CI (0.92,2.70)]. Nasarawa state records the highest incidence of diarrhoea in the Northcentral [OR = 5.12; CI (3.03,8.65)], whereas Kogi state reports the lowest [OR = 0.29; CI (0.16,0.53)]. In the Northeast, Borno state has the highest rate of fever [OR = 3.28; CI (2.80,3.84)], and Bauchi state the lowest [OR = 0.38; CI (0.29,0.50)]. In Adamawa state, the risks of fever and diarrhoea are nearly equivalent [OR = 1.17; CI (0.97,1.41)], and the risk of fever there is similar to that in Taraba state [OR = 0.92; CI (0.75,1.12)]. Diarrhoea is most prevalent in Yobe state [OR = 3.17; CI (2.37,4.23)] and least prevalent in Borno state [OR = 0.26; CI (0.20,0.33)]. In the Northwest, the risk of fever is similarly high in Zamfara and Kebbi states [OR = 1.04; CI (0.93,1.17)], with Kastina state showing the lowest risk [OR = 0.39; CI (0.34,0.46)]. Children in Zamfara state experience notably different risks of fever and diarrhoea [OR = 0.07; CI (0.05,0.10)]. Kaduna state reports the highest incidence of diarrhoea [OR = 21.88; CI (15.54,30.82)], while Kano state has the lowest [OR = 2.50; CI (1.73,3.63)]. In the Southeast, Imo state leads in fever incidence [OR = 8.20; CI (5.61,11.98)], while Anambra state has the lowest [OR = 0.40; CI (0.21,0.78)]. In Abia state, the risk of fever is comparable to that in Enugu state [OR = 1.03; CI (0.63,1.71)], but the risks of fever and diarrhoea in Abia differ significantly [OR = 2.67; CI (1.75,4.06)]. Abia state also has the highest diarrhoea rate in the Southeast [OR = 2.67; CI (1.75,4.06)], with Ebonyi state having the lowest [OR = 0.05; CI (0.03,0.09)]. In the South-South region, Bayelsa and Edo states have similar risks of fever [OR = 1.28; CI (0.84,1.95)], with Akwa Ibom state reporting the highest fever rate [OR = 4.62; CI (3.27,6.52)] and Delta state the lowest [OR = 0.08; CI (0.02,0.25)]. Children in Bayelsa state face distinctly different risks of fever and diarrhoea [OR = 0.56; CI (0.34,0.95)]. Rivers state shows the highest incidence of diarrhoea in the South-South [OR = 10.50; CI (4.78,23.06)], while Akwa Ibom state has the lowest [OR = 0.30; CI (0.15,0.57)]. In the Southwest, Lagos and Osun states have similar risks of fever [OR = 1.00; CI (0.59,1.69)], with Ogun state experiencing the highest incidence [OR = 3.47; CI (2.28,5.28)] and Oyo state the lowest [OR = 0.18; CI (0.07,0.46)]. In Lagos state, the risks of fever and diarrhoea are comparable [OR = 0.96; CI (0.57,1.64)], and the risk of diarrhoea is similar to those in Ekiti, Ogun, and Ondo states. Oyo state has the highest diarrhoea rate in the Southwest [OR = 10.99; CI (3.81,31.67)], with Ogun state reporting the lowest [OR = 0.77; CI (0.42,1.42)]. Children of mothers with more than secondary education are significantly less likely to suffer ARI [OR = 0.35; CI (0.29,0.42)], whereas children of mothers without any education run a higher risk of diarrhoea [OR = 2.12; CI (1.89,2.38)] and fever [OR = 2.61; CI (2.34,2.91)]. Our analysis also indicated that household wealth quintile is a significant determinant of morbidity. The results in this paper could help the government and non-governmental agencies to focus and target intervention programs for ARI, diarrhoea and fever on the most vulnerable and risky under five groups and populations in Nigeria., (© 2024. Introduction: Diarrhoea is a major public health concern in developing countries, usually exacerbated by poor water, sanitation and hygiene but its aetiology is under-studied, particularly away from capital cities. We identified diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) from stools collected in Ile-Ife and Ilesa, Osun state, Nigeria and determined their antibiotic resistance profiles., Methods: Stool samples from 167 children with diarrhoea and 334 controls under the age of 5 years were cultured for Escherichia coli and Salmonella. Bacterial isolates were identified biochemically and DEC were identified by PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was by modified Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method in accordance with the CLSI guidelines. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests., Result: Diarrhoea infection is significantly high among children under 12 months (p = 0.002), caregivers without at least primary school education (p = 0.006), breastfeeding for under 6 months (p˂0.001), and caregivers who were siblings (p = 0.004). DEC was detected in 69(41.3%) cases but only 86(25.7%) controls (p < 0.001) and more commonly recovered during the wet season (p < 0.001). Enterotoxigenic E. coli (p = 0.031), enteropathogenic E. coli (p = 0.031) and Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (p = 0.044) were recovered more commonly from cases than controls. DEC from patients with diarrhoea were commonly resistant to sulphonamides (91.3%), trimethoprim (82.6%), and ampicillin (78.3%) but were largely susceptible to quinolones and carbapenems (97.1%)., Conclusion: Enteropathogenic, enterotoxigenic and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli are associated with diarrhoea in our setting, and show considerable resistance to first-line antimicrobials. Background: In sub-Saharan African countries, preventable and manageable diseases such as diarrhea and acute respiratory infections still claim the lives of children. Hence, this study aims to estimate the rate of change in the log expected number of days a child suffers from Diarrhea (NOD) and flu/common cold (NOF) among children aged 6 to 11 months at the baseline of the study., Methodology: This study used secondary data which exhibit a longitudinal and multilevel structure. Based on the results of exploratory analysis, a multilevel zero-inflated Poisson regression model with a rate of change in the log expected NOD and NOF described by a quadratic trend was proposed to efficiently analyze both outcomes accounting for correlation between observations and individuals through random effects. Furthermore, residual plots were used to assess the goodness of fit of the model., Results: Considering subject and cluster-specific random effects, the results revealed a quadratic trend in the rate of change of the log expected NOD. Initially, low dose iron Micronutrient Powder (MNP) users exhibited a higher rate of change compared to non-users, but this trend reversed over time. Similarly, the log expected NOF decreased for children who used MNP and exclusively breastfed for six months, in comparison to their counterparts. In addition, the odds of not having flu decreased with each two-week increment for MNP users, as compared to non-MNP users. Furthermore, an increase in NOD resulted in an increase in the log expected NOF. Region and exclusive breastfeeding also have a significant relationships with both NOD and NOF., Conclusion: The findings of this study underscore the importance of commencing analysis of data generated from a study with exploratory analysis. Background: Bangladesh has seen a significant decline in child mortality in recent decades, but morbidity among children <5 y of age remains high. The aim of this analysis was to examine trends and identify risk factors related to child morbidity in Bangladesh., Methods: This analysis is based on data from four successive cross-sectional Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys for the years 2007, 2011, 2014 and 2017-18. Several count regression models were fitted and the best model was used to identify risk factors associated with morbidity in children <5 y of age., Results: According to the results of the trend analysis, the prevalence of non-symptomatic children increased and the prevalence of fever, diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) decreased over the years. The Vuong's non-nested test indicated that Poisson regression could be used as the best model. From the results of the Poisson regression model, child age, sex, underweight, wasted, stunting, maternal education, wealth status, religion and region were the important determinants associated with the risk of child morbidity. The risk was considerably higher among women with a primary education compared with women with a secondary or greater education in Bangladesh., Conclusions: This analysis concluded that child morbidity is still a major public health problem for Bangladesh. Background: Diarrhea diseases continue to present a significant threat to the well-being of children under the age of five in Africa, thereby contributing substantially to both morbidity and mortality rates. The period spanning between January 2013 and December 2023 has witnessed persistent challenges in the fight against these diseases, thereby necessitating a thorough investigation into the factors that determine their occurrence. It is important to note that the burden of diarrhea diseases is not evenly distributed across the continent, with residence, socioeconomic, and environmental factors playing pivotal roles in shaping the prevalence and incidence rates. Consequently, this systematic review aimed to consolidate and analyze the existing body of literature on the determinants of diarrhea diseases among children under the age of five in Africa between January 2013 and December 2023., Method: The systematic review employed a rigorous methodological approach to examine the determinants of diarrhea diseases among children under the age of five in Africa between January 2013 and December 2023. A comprehensive search strategy was implemented, utilizing databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and incorporating relevant keywords. The inclusion criteria focused on studies published within the specified timeframe, with a specific focus on the determinants of diarrhea disease among children under the age of five in Africa. The study selection process involved a two-stage screening, with independent reviewers evaluating titles, abstracts, and full texts to determine eligibility. The quality assessment, employing a standardized tool, ensured the inclusion of studies with robust methodologies. Data extraction encompassed key study details, including demographics, residence factors, socioeconomic influences, environmental variables, and intervention outcomes., Results: The search yielded a total of 12,580 articles across 25 African countries; however, only 97 of these articles met the inclusion criteria and were ultimately included in the systematic review. The systematic review revealed geographic and seasonal disparities in the prevalence of diarrhoeal diseases across different countries in Africa. Factors such as age-related vulnerabilities, gender disparities, maternal occupation, disposal of young children's stools, and economic status were identified as significant determinants of the prevalence of diarrhea disease., Conclusion: This systematic review provides a comprehensive understanding of the determinants of diarrhea diseases among children under the age of five in Africa between January 2013 and December 2023. The nuanced analysis of residence variations, socioeconomic influences, environmental factors, and intervention outcomes underscores the complex nature of this issue. The findings highlight the necessity for region-specific and context-sensitive interventions to address the unique challenges faced by diverse communities. Diarrhea claims >500,000 lives annually among children under five years of age in low- and middle-income countries. Mortality due to acute diarrhea (<7 days' duration) is decreasing, but prolonged (7-13 days) and persistent (≥14 days of duration) diarrhea remains a massive challenge. Here, we use a case-control study to decipher if fecal gut microbiota compositional differences between Ethiopian children with acute (n=554) or prolonged/persistent (n=95) diarrhea and frequency-matched non-diarrheal controls (n=663) are linked to diarrheal etiology. We show that diarrhea cases are associated with lower bacterial diversity and enriched in Escherichia spp., Campylobacter spp., and Streptococcus spp. Further, diarrhea cases are depleted in gut commensals such as Prevotella copri, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and Dialister succinatiphilus, with depletion being most pronounced in prolonged/persistent cases, suggesting that prolonged duration of diarrhea is accompanied by depletion of gut commensals and that re-establishing these via e.g., microbiota-directed food supplements offer a potential treatment strategy., (© 2024. Cryptosporidiosis has previously been reported in animals, humans, and water sources in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, most reports were only to the genus level, or generically identified as cryptosporidiosis. We aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of Cryptosporidium species occurring in diarrhetic ungulates which were brought to the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) in Dubai. Using a combination of microscopic and molecular methods, we identified five species of Cryptosporidium occurring among ungulates in the UAE, namely C. parvum, C. hominis, C. xiaoi, C. meleagridis, and C. equi. Cryptosporidium parvum was the most prevalent species in our samples. Furthermore, we identified subtypes of C. parvum and C. hominis, which are involved in both human and animal cryptosporidiosis. This is also the first reported occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp. in the Arabian Tahr, to our knowledge. Since the animals examined were all in contact with humans, the possibility of zoonotic spread is possible. Our study correlates with previous reports in the region, building upon the identification of Cryptosporidium sp. Importance: Despite advancements in herd management, feeding, and pharmaceutical interventions, neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) remains a major global health concern. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the major contributors to NCD. Although several pathogens have been identified in the Republic of Korea (ROK), the etiological agents of numerous NCD cases have not been identified., Objective: To identify, for the first time, the prevalence and impact of Boosepivirus (BooV) on calf diarrhea in the ROK., Methods: Here, the unknown cause of calf diarrhea was determined using metagenomics We then explored the prevalence of certain pathogens, including BooV, that cause NCD. Seventy diarrheal fecal samples from Hanwoo ( Bos taurus coreanae ) calves were analyzed using reverse transcriptase and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction for pathogen detection and BooV isolate sequencing., Results: The complete genome of BooV was detected from unknown causes of calf diarrhea. And also, BooV was the most frequently detected pathogen (35.7%) among 8 pathogens in 70 diarrheic feces from Hanwoo calves. Co-infection analyses indicated that most BooV-positive samples were solely infected with BooV, indicating its significance in NCD in the ROK. Background: Diarrheal illness is a prominent public health worry in developing countries, resulting in high mortality among children. Sociodemographic characteristics and geographic settings are the main effective factors for the increased incidence of childhood diarrhea. Aeromonas is a neglected organism capable of causing dysentery and diarrhea. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the prevalence of Aeromonas as an agent in the causation of diarrhea in Asian children. Methods: We conducted a systematic review using Web of Science, PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Science Direct, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published between January 2000 and February 2023. We considered studies that found Aeromonas in diarrheal stool. A random-effects model was used to determine the pooled prevalence of Aeromonas . Results: Our search returned 2,057 articles, with 17 articles from seven Asian nations being included in the systematic review. The pooled prevalence of Aeromonas was 4.5% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.9%-6.8%), with heterogeneity ( I 2 = 96.85; p < 0.001). There was a greater prevalence in areas with high population living in poverty (12.2%; 95% CI: 5.8%-24%) and lower-middle-income countries (5.0%; 95% CI: 2.7%-9.0%). In addition, the prevalence of Aeromonas was greater in South Asia (10.0%; 95% CI: 5.6%-17.2%), in India (12.9%; 95% CI: 6.8%-23%), and in countries with open defecation rate of 5%-25% (11.3%; 95% CI: 6.3%-19.2%). Conclusion: -associated diarrhea in children in Asia estimated in the present study highlighted the high burden of Aeromonas -associated diarrhea in children in Asia estimated in the present study highlighted the high burden of Aeromonas in some parts of Asia.

Infectious causes of diarrhea contribute significantly to morbidity in Asia. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of infectious etiologies of persistent and chronic diarrhea in Asian adults. Searches were performed on PubMed and Scopus for studies from January 1, 1970, to May 30, 2023. Sixteen studies were identified and included. The meta-analysis was conducted with the random-effects method, estimating the pooled prevalence of groups of infectious pathogens as causes of persistent and chronic diarrhea among Asian adults. The findings were highly heterogeneous and indicative of publication bias. The majority of studies were conducted on persons living with human immunodeficiency virus infection (PLHIV). The studies were predominantly from low-income and middle-income Asian countries. The most common cause was parasitic, with a pooled prevalence of 0.52 (95% confidence interval 0.28-0.65, I 2  = 99%, Cochran's Q = 1027.44, P < 0.01), followed by bacterial, fungal, and viral causes, which were substantially rarer. Negative microbiological testing was also common, with a pooled prevalence for a negative test being 0.37 (95% confidence interval 0.17-0.52, I 2  = 99%, Cochran's Q = 1027.44, P < 0.01). Subgroup analyses of studies conducted among PLHIV, from year 2000 and among those conducted in Southeast Asia showed a similar prevalence of parasitic causes of diarrhea. In conclusion, in Asian adults with persistent and chronic diarrhea, parasitic causes were most prevalent. However, the estimate of true prevalence is limited by significant heterogeneity among the available studies. Intestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (InPEC) is one of the most common causes of bacterial diarrhea in farm animals, including profuse neonatal diarrhea and post weaning diarrhea (PWD) in piglets. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of InPEC and associated primary virulence factors among 543 non-duplicate E. coli isolates from diarrheal pigs from 15 swine farms in southern China. Six major virulence genes associated with InPEC were identified among 69 (12.71 %) E. coli isolates and included est (6.62 %), K88 (4.79 %), elt (3.68 %), eae (1.47 %), stx2 (0.92 %) and F18 (0.55 %). Three pathotypes of InPEC were identified including ETEC (8.10 %), EPEC (1.29 %) and STEC/ETEC (0.92 %). In particular, K88 was only found in ETEC from breeding farms, whereas F18 was only present in STEC/ETEC hybrid from finishing farms. Whole genome sequence analysis of 37 E. coli isolates revealed that InPEC strains frequently co-carried multiple antibiotic resistance gene (ARG). est, elt and F18 were also found to co-locate with ARGs on a single IncFIB/IncFII plasmid. InPEC isolates from different pathotypes also possessed different profiles of virulence genes and antimicrobial resistance genes. Population structure analysis demonstrated that InPEC isolates from different pathotypes were highly heterogeneous whereas those of the same pathotype were extremely similar. Plasmid analysis revealed that K88 and/or est/elt were found on pGX18-2-like/pGX203-2-like and pGX203-1-like IncFII plasmids, while F18 and elt/est, as well as diverse ARGs were found to co-locate on IncFII/IncFIB plasmids with a non-typical backbone. Moreover, these key virulence genes were flanked by or adjacent to IS elements. Background: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is an increasingly common disease in healthcare facilities and community settings. However, there are limited reports of community-onset CDI (CO-CDI) in China., Methods: We collected diarrheal stool samples from 3885 patients who went to outpatient department or emergency department in a tertiary hospital in China during 2010-2023, analyzed the correlation between patients' basic information and the detection rate of CDI. Besides, all stool samples from 3885 outpatients included were tested by culturing. Moreover, we randomly selected 89 patients' stools during the 14 years and isolated 126 C. difficile strains from them. The presence of toxin genes (tcdA, tcdB, cdtA, and cdtB) were confirmed by PCR. Toxigenic strains were typed using multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Susceptibility to 9 antimicrobials was evaluated using the E-test., Results: 528 of 3885 patients (13.6 %) with diarrhea were finally diagnosed as CDI. The median age of patients included was 51 years (6 months-95 years), while the median of patients with CDI was older than patients with negative results [55.5 years (6 months-93 years) vs. 50 years (9 months -95 years), p < 0.001]. In winter, patients with diarrhea might be more likely to have CDI. The detection rate of CDI of patients in emergency department was much higher than those in other outpatients (20.7 % vs. 12.4 %, p < 0.001), and did differ from each outpatient departments (p < 0.05). There were 95 isolated strains detected as toxigenic C. difficile. Among these strains, 82 (86.3 %) had the tcdA and tcdB genes (A+B+) and 5 of these 82 strains were positive for the binary toxin genes (cdtA and cdtB) (A+B+CDT+). There were 15 different sequence types (STs) by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), while the most ST was ST-54 (23.2 %). ST types composition was relatively stable over the time span of this study. Some strains had high resistance to ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, and erythromycin. Twenty-three isolates (24.2 %) were multidrug-resistant., Conclusions: Outpatients with CDI were common among patients having diarrhea during this period in our hospital. Elderly patients and patients went to emergency department may be susceptible to CDI. Based on MLST, the result revealed that the C. difficile isolates had high genetic diversity and maintained stability in this period. Background: The second most common cause of death for children under five is diarrhea. Early Predicting diarrhea disease and identify its determinants (factors) using an advanced machine learning model is the most effective way to save the lives of children. Hence, this study aimed to predict diarrheal diseases, identify their determinants, and generate some rules using machine learning models., Methods: The study used secondary data from the 12 east African countries for DHS dataset analysis using Python. Machine learning techniques such as Random Forest, Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbor, Logistic Regression (LR), wrapper feature selection and SHAP values are used for identify determinants., Result: The final experimentation results indicated the random forest model performed the best to predict diarrhea disease with an accuracy of 86.5%, precision of 89%, F-measure of 86%, AUC curve of 92%, and recall of 82%. Important predictors' identified age, countries, wealth status, mother's educational status, mother's age, source of drinking water, number of under-five children immunization status, media exposure, timing of breast feeding, mother's working status, types of toilet, and twin status were associated with a higher predicted probability of diarrhea disease., Conclusion: According to this study, child caregivers are fully aware of sanitation and feeding their children, and moms are educated, which can reduce child mortality by diarrhea in children in east Africa. Background: The WASH benefits Bangladesh trial multi-component sanitation intervention reduced diarrheal disease among children < 5 years. Intervention components included latrine upgrades, child feces management tools, and behavioral promotion. It remains unclear which components most impacted diarrhea., Methods: We conducted mediation analysis within a subset of households (n = 720) from the sanitation and control arms. Potential mediators were categorized into indicators of latrine quality, latrine use practices, and feces management practices. We estimated average causal mediation effects (ACME) as prevalence differences (PD), defined as the intervention's effect on diarrhea through its effect on the mediator., Results: The intervention improved all indicators compared to controls. We found significant mediation through multiple latrine use and feces management practice indicators. The strongest mediators during monsoon seasons were reduced open defecation among children aged < 3 and 3-8 years, and increased disposal of child feces into latrines. The strongest mediators during dry seasons were access to a flush/pour-flush latrine, reduced open defecation among children aged 3-8 years, and increased disposal of child feces into latrines. Individual mediation effects were small (PD = 0.5-2 percentage points) compared to the overall intervention effect but collectively describe significant mediation pathways., Discussion: The effect of the WASH Benefits Bangladesh sanitation intervention on diarrheal disease was mediated through improved child feces management and reduced child open defecation. Although the intervention significantly improved latrine quality, relatively high latrine quality at baseline may have limited benefits from additional improvements. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the association between diarrhea or constipation and urinary incontinence (UI) in adults., Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2009-2010 was used to include 4686 adults aged 20 and over in the analysis. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) were used as outcome variables, with diarrhea and constipation as exposure factors. We first compared the baseline characteristics of those with and without SUI, as well as those with and without UUI. The impact of diarrhea or constipation on SUI and UUI was assessed using multivariate logistic regression models. To ensure the stability of the results, subgroup and stratified analyses were conducted., Results: The prevalence rates of UUI and SUI were 22.49% and 23.39%, respectively. Adjusted multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the risk of UUI was increased by either diarrhea (OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.36-2.04) or constipation (OR 1.42, 95% CI 1.11-1.83). The risk of SUI was also elevated by either diarrhea (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.11-1.67) or constipation (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.06-1.63). Diarrheal disease remains a significant cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population, particularly among children below five years of age. Although the occurrence of diarrheal episodes is on the decline, its impact continues to escalate at a concerning rate among children under the age of five, especially in developing countries. The objective of this paper is to investigate the factors associated with diarrhea in Yemeni children younger than five years, drawing on data from the latest edition of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) Yemen conducted in 2022-2023. To identify factors associated with the prevalence of childhood diarrhea, bivariate analysis and multivariable logistic regression were utilized. The findings of this study suggest that age group 6-23, unimproved sanitation, and low-income households are associated with high risk of diarrhea in children under five years of age in Yemen. Objectives: This study aimed to identify and characterise the determinants influencing the occurrence of diarrheal diseases in children aged 6-24 months undergoing complementary feeding within a low-income urban community in Kenya., Methods: This study followed a cross-sectional design and recruited caregivers of children aged 6-24 months from 302 households. The dependent variable was the 2-week diarrhoea prevalence among children, with independent variables including sociodemographic characteristics, child immunisation and feeding status, and water and sanitation facilities. Data analysis was performed using SPSS. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were used to assess associations between independent variables and the occurrence of diarrheal diseases., Results: The majority of caregivers were female (n = 282, 93.4%), aged 25-34 years (n = 156, 51.7%), had attained secondary school education (n = 154, 51%), were unemployed (n = 162, 53.6%), and earned Ksh 10,000 (USD 100) or less. 296 (98%) indexed children were fully vaccinated against rotavirus. Most households used improved drinking water sources (n = 272, 90.1%). Most caregivers did not regularly wash their hands with soap and water (n = 225, 74.5%). The 2-week diarrhoea prevalence among children was 34.1% (103/302), with 69.9% (72/103) of these cases seeking care at a healthcare facility. Logistic regression analysis revealed that children of caregivers earning Ksh 20,000 and below (aOR = 2.9[1.3-6.5], p = 0.01), and those from households using unimproved sanitation facilities (aOR = 1.9 [CI 1-3.4], p = 0.042), had significantly higher odds of having diarrhoea., Conclusion: The study found a high prevalence of diarrhoea in Kenyan children aged 6-24 months, with caregiver income and household sanitation facilities significantly impacting the occurrence of the disease. Background: There is no documented experience in the use of the WHO standards for improving the quality of care (QOC) for children at the facility level. We describe the use of 10 prioritised WHO-Standard-based Quality Measures to assess QOC for children with acute diarrhoea (AD) in Italy., Methods: In a multicentre observational study in 11 paediatric emergency departments with different characteristics and geographical location, we collected data on 3061 children aged 6 months to 15 years with AD and no complications. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted., Results: Study findings highlighted both good practices and gaps in QoC, with major differences in QOC across facilities. Documentation of body weight and temperature varied from 7.7% to 98.5% and from 50% to 97.7%, respectively (p<0.001); antibiotic and probiotic prescription rates ranged from 0% to 10.1% and from 0% to 80.8%, respectively (p<0.001); hospitalisations rates ranged between 8.5% and 62.8% (p<0.001); written indications for reassessment were provided in 10.4%-90.2% of cases (p<0.001). When corrected for children's individual characteristics, the variable more consistently associated with each analysed outcome was the individual facility. Higher rates of antibiotics prescription (+7.6%, p=0.04) and hospitalisation (+52.9%, p<0.001) were observed for facilities in Southern Italy, compared with university centres (-36%, p<0.001), independently from children characteristics. Children's clinical characteristics in each centre were not associated with either hospitalisation or antibiotic prescription rates., Conclusions: The 10 prioritised WHO-Standard-based Quality Measures allow a rapid assessment of QOC in children with AD. Background: The human hand has constant contact with the environment, hence requires regular hand hygiene. Hand hygiene has gained recognition because of the COVID-19 pandemic and is a largely effective, affordable preventive measure against infectious diseases. This study used both national and sub-national analyses to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 handwashing guidelines on instances of diarrhea in Ghana., Methods: Data on diarrhea cases spanning February 2018 and March 2022 were retrieved from the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS 2) using a data extraction guide. The data were summarized using descriptive statistics. The difference in diarrhea cases between the pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19 periods was measured using a two-sample t-test across Ghana's 16 administrative areas. Causal Impact package in R statistical software was employed to determine the impact of the introduction of COVID-19 hand hygiene protocols on diarrheal disease., Results: A total of 5,645,533 diarrheal cases reported between February 2018 and March 2022 through the routine MIS (DHIMS2) were examined. Fifty-three percent of the cases occurred before the introduction of the hand hygiene protocol. Descriptive statistics indicated a statistically significant decrease in average diarrheal cases during the hand hygiene implementation era (13,463 cases reduction, p<0.001). Sub-national analyses revealed significant reductions in various regions: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Ahafo, Central, Eastern, Northern, Upper East, Upper West, and Volta (p<0.05). Causal impact analysis confirmed 11.0% nationwide reduction in diarrheal cases attributed to the COVID-19 hand hygiene protocols (p<0.001)., Conclusion: This study underscores the effectiveness of COVID-19 hand hygiene protocols in reducing diarrheal morbidity in Ghana, with varying regional impacts. A total of 490 diarrhoeic samples from calves aged between 0 and 6 months were screened for the presence of different G- and P-genotypes of rotavirus circulating in bovines in the Kashmir Valley. Of the 490 diarrhoeic samples, Group A rotavirus was detected in 68 (13.87%) samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by RNA-PAGE. Genotyping analysis revealed G10, G6, G3, P[11] and P[5] to be the predominant types. The most common types of combinations detected were G10P[11] (27.90%) and G6P[11] (20.60%). The prevalence rate of G10 and P[11] decreased from 60% to 36.76% and 100%-69.11%, respectively. Genotypes G6, G3, P[1] and P[5], which were not previously reported, were detected and unusual combinations such as G6P[11], G3P[11], G10P[5], G3P[5], G6P[1], G6P[5], G6+G8P[11] were also observed for the first time. Fluctuations in the predominant types, emergence of new types and possible genetic reassortment events suggest an unstable epidemiological situation and the need for continuous surveillance of the circulating types to ensure the suitability of the vaccination programme. The present data suggests G10, G6, P[11] and P[5] genotypes could be incorporated in the polyvalent vaccine to offer increased protection against bovine rotavirus infection in India.

In Mozambique, about 500,000 cases of diarrhoea were caused by foodborne pathogens in 2018. A review of the epidemiology of diarrhoea in children under five showed a high disease burden. This study aimed to identify Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) and Salmonella spp. contamination of food and water in urban and rural areas of Maputo consumed by children under five with diarrhoea. One hundred and eighty-six children with diarrhoea were selected from Primeiro de Maio and Marracuene Health Care Centres from the Kamaxakeni and Marracuene districts, respectively. Food (n = 167) and water (n = 100) samples were collected in children's households for diarrhoeagenic bacterial identification. Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire to collect data about demographics and foods consumed a week before the children's diarrhoea episodes. The prevalence of both DEC and Salmonella spp. was 9.8% in food and 5.4% in water samples. DEC was most prevalent in cereals (urban = 2.8%; rural = 2.4%) and water samples (urban = 1.4%; rural = 3.3%). Salmonella spp. was mainly detected in cereals (urban = 0.7%; rural = 0.8%). Diarrhoeagenic pathogens were associated with the type of food frequently consumed by children under five years with diarrhoea (infant formula, fruit puree, ready-to-eat meals, and bottled water), while the association with demographics was absent. We found that the infant foods consumed by children with diarrhoea are associated with DEC and Salmonella spp., and the prevalence of these contaminants is higher in the rural (8.9%) than in the urban area (6.3%), showing the need for caregiver education on food handling practices.

Slum areas in Ethiopia have high poverty status. In addition, they possess poor water and sanitation accesses such as unsafe drinking water, a lower number of sanitation facilities and poor hygienic conditions. These scenarios are important in the occurrence of diarrhea among under five children's. However, there are many studies conducted on diarrhea among under five children in Ethiopia, unfortunately, the majority usually didn't give enough coverage for the burden of diarrhea among under five children in slum areas. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of diarrhea and associated factors among under five children in slum areas of Gondar City. This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in slum areas of Gondar City among under five children from March 28 to April 28, 2023. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to collect a sample of 836 through interview-administered methods using a structured data collection tool. The collected data was manually checked for completeness, coded, and entered into EPI Info version 7.1.5.2 software. It was then exported to Stata version 14.1 software for descriptive analysis, as well as bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analyses, to identify factors associated with diarrhea among under five children. The prevalence of diarrhea among under five children at 95% confidence interval was 24.64% (CI 21.71-27.56). Mothers/caretakers age < 25 years (AOR = 1.88, 95% CI 1.16-3.06), mothers/caretakers age between 28 and 31 years (AOR = 1.82, 95% CI 1.08-3.05), mothers/caretakers who had no formal education (AOR = 3.18, 95% CI 1.86-5.41), mothers/caretakers who had primary education (AOR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.09-2.57), income level between 4877 and 5643 Ethiopian Birr (AOR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.04-3.15), family size greater than five (AOR = 1.54, 95% CI 1.00-2.36), flies around the house (AOR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.38-3.73), playground not clean (AOR = 2.70, 95% CI 1.62-4.50), breastfed for ≥ 1 year (AOR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.41-0.97), mothers/caretakers who did not wash their hands before food preparation and eating (AOR = 2.31, 95% CI 1.39-3.58), mothers/caretakers who did not wash their hands after visiting latrine (AOR = 1.60, 95% CI 1.07-2.38) were significantly associated factors with diarrhea among under five children in slum areas of Gondar City. The study indicates that the prevalence of diarrhea was higher among under five children in slum areas of Gondar City. The Gondar City Administration Education Bureau should give great emphasis on improving mother's and caretaker's education. Age-stratified path analyses modeled associations between enteric pathogen reservoirs, transmission pathways and height-for-age z-scores (HAZ) to identify determinants of childhood growth in the Kolkata, India site of the Global Enteric Multicenter Study (GEMS). Models tested direct associations of potential pathogen reservoirs with HAZ at 60-day follow-up in separate moderate and severe diarrhea (MSD) case and control cohorts or indirectly when mediated by enteric infections. In the MSD cohort, rotavirus and typical EPEC (tEPEC) infections among children 0-11 months of age and ST-ETEC infections among children 12-23 months of age were associated with lower HAZ. Handwashing after defecating and before cooking reduced impaired growth through reductions in rotavirus and tEPEC infections. Water storage increased rotavirus and ST-ETEC infection risks, resulting in increased impaired growth, but was reduced with reported child feces disposal. The GII norovirus variant was inversely associated with HAZ among children 12-59 months of age in the control cohort. Reported handwashing before the handling of children reduced GII infections and impaired growth. Boiling water and the disposal of children's feces mediated by stored water were positively associated with HAZ. The targeting of pathogen-specific reservoirs and transmission pathways may more effectively improve childhood linear growth in South Asian urban communities.

Clarifying the etiology of diarrhea cases of unknown cause is important in the fight against enteric infections. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of canine kobuvirus (CaKoV), in cases of diarrhea of unknown origin in dogs. A total 121 swab samples from dogs with diarrhea were collected. Molecular analyses of the samples were performed. For this purpose, after the sequence reaction, a phylogenetic tree was created, and bioinformatics analyses were performed. The prevalence rate of CaKoV in the sampled population was determined as 16.5% (20/121). The presence of parvovirus and coronavirus, which are common viral agents in CaKoV-positive dogs, was determined as 35% (7/20) and 10% (2/20), respectively. The rate of dogs with only CaKoV detected was 65% (13/20). Phylogenetic analysis of CaKoV strains clustered together closely related to reference strains. There are very limited studies on the role of CaKoV in the etiology of diarrhea cases of unknown cause in dogs around the world. So far, only one study has been done on CaKoV in Turkey. In this report which includes molecular characterization and epidemiological data on CaKoV determined the importance of CaKoV in cases of diarrhea of unknown origin. Background: Rotavirus infections are a significant cause of severe diarrhea and related illness and death in children under five worldwide. Despite the global introduction of vaccinations for rotavirus over a decade ago, rotavirus infections still result in high deaths annually, mainly in low-income countries, including Ethiopia, and need special attention. This system review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively explore the positive proportion of rotavirus at pre- and post-vaccine introduction periods and genotype distribution in children under five with diarrhea in Ethiopia., Methods: The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Database sources included PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Epistemonikos, focusing on studies published before November 30, 2023. The search targeted rotavirus infection and genotype distribution in Ethiopia before and after the introduction of the Rota vaccine. Data was managed using EndNote 2020 software and stored in an Excel 2010 sheet. A random-effects model determined the pooled estimate of the rotavirus infection rate at 95% confidence intervals. The Q-and I² statistics were used to assess the study heterogeneity, and a funnel plot (Egger test) was used to determine the possibility of publication bias., Results: The analysis included data from nine studies conducted in different regions of Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of rotavirus infection was significant, with a prevalence rate of approximately 22.63% (1362/6039). The most common genotypes identified before the Rota vacation introduction were G1, G2, G3, G12, P [4], P [6], P [8], P [9], and P [10]. Meanwhile, G3 and P [8] genotypes were particularly prevalent after the Rota vaccine introduction. These findings highlight the importance of implementing preventive measures, such as vaccination, to reduce the burden of rotavirus infection in this population. The identified genotypes provide valuable insights for vaccine development and targeted interventions., Conclusion: This study contributes to the evidence base for public health interventions and strategies to reduce the impact of rotavirus infection in children under five in Ethiopia. Objectives: Nowadays, few studies have examined the relationships between sleep duration and abnormal gut health. In this study, we used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to investigate the correlations between habitual sleep duration and abnormal bowel symptoms in adults., Methods: This study included 11,533 participants aged ≥ 20 years from the NHANES conducted during 2005-2010. Chronic constipation and chronic diarrhea were defined based on the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and frequency of bowel movements. Sleep duration was assessed based on the self-report questionnaire and classified into three groups: short sleep duration (< 7 h), normal sleep duration (7-9 h), and long sleep duration (> 9 h). Weighted data were calculated according to analytical guidelines. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline curves (RCS) were used to assess and describe the association between sleep duration and chronic diarrhea and constipation. Univariate and stratified analyses were also performed., Results: There were 949 (7.27%) adults aged 20 years and older with chronic diarrhea and 1120 (8.94%) adults with constipation among the 11,533 individuals. A positive association was found between short sleep duration and chronic constipation, with a multivariate-adjusted OR of 1.32 (95% CI: 1.05-1.66). Additionally, long sleep duration was significantly associated with an increased risk of chronic diarrhea (OR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.08-2.84, P = 0.026). The RCS models revealed a statistically significant nonlinear association (P for non-linearity < 0.05) between sleep duration and chronic diarrhea. Furthermore, obesity was found to modify the association between sleep duration and chronic diarrhea and constipation (p for interaction = 0.044)., Conclusions: This study suggests that both long and short sleep durations are associated with a higher risk of chronic diarrhea and constipation in the general population. Respiratory cryptosporidiosis is considered an occasional, late-stage complication of HIV/AIDS. This study aimed to assess the clinical importance of respiratory cryptosporidiosis in children with diarrhea and respiratory symptoms at Mulago Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. Children aged 9 to 36 months presenting with diarrhea and cough or unexplained tachypnea (N = 1,918) were screened for fecal Cryptosporidium using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Children with positive stool samples were eligible for further diagnostic tests, including sputum induction. Sputum samples were subjected to PCR for Cryptosporidium, as well as routine microbiology (culture and gram stain) and auramine stain for tuberculosis. Regression analyses were used to investigate 1) factors associated with respiratory cryptosporidiosis and 2) whether respiratory cryptosporidiosis was independently associated with hospitalization. Prevalence of enteric cryptosporidiosis was 260/1,918 (13.6%) (>80% Cryptosporidium hominis). Of the 236 children who had sputum available for analysis, 62 (26.3%) had Cryptosporidium in the sputum, only two of whom had HIV infection. Children with Cryptosporidium in the sputum were more likely to have abnormal oxygen saturation at presentation (SpO2 <96%; P = 0.053); no other differences in frequency or severity of respiratory signs were noted. No alternative bacterial cause of respiratory symptoms was identified in 37.7% of children with respiratory cryptosporidiosis, compared with 23.6% of children without (P = 0.04). Sputum-positive children had twice the odds of hospitalization compared with children without Cryptosporidium infection at this site (adjusted odds ratio = 2.08, 95% confidence interval: 1.02-4.22; P = 0.043). Respiratory tract involvement is common in children with intestinal cryptosporidiosis who are experiencing respiratory symptoms. Such children may experience some degree of respiratory compromise and may be at increased risk for hospitalization.

Background: Cupriavidus gilardii is an aerobic, gram-negative, motile, glucose-nonfermenting bacillus, first described in 1999. Typically, it exhibits low pathogenicity in humans, causing opportunistic infections primarily in individuals with compromised immune systems. This bacterium has been also found in various environmental sources such as plants and contaminated soils. Notably, there have been no documented cases of C. gilardii infections in animals., Case Presentation: This case report outlines a bovine neonatal diarrhea outbreak that occurred in Northern Greece, during which C. gilardii was isolated. Faecal samples from 5-day-old calves were collected and transported to the laboratory for further examination. Bacterial culture and next generation sequencing techniques were employed to confirm the presence of this bacterium in the samples. Following the isolation and identification of C. gilardii from the samples, an autogenous vaccine was produced and administered to the cows within the farm. Subsequent to vaccination, a progressive reduction in calf diarrhea and deaths was observed, leading to their eventual complete resolution. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first documentation of C. gilardii isolation from cases of bovine neonatal diarrhea., Conclusion: This case report presents the first isolation case of C. gilardii from animal samples and more specifically from calf faecal samples. This study aimed to examine the association between household water insecurity (HWIS), mother's handwashing practices, and childhood diarrhea in the peri-urban and informal settlements of Hosanna town. A community-based cross-sectional study involving 424 mothers was carried out in Hosanna town, and the data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire, HWISE Scale, and an observational checklist. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that the prevalence of HWIS and diarrhea among under-five children was 68.6% and 16%, respectively. Only 42.2% of the mothers had good handwashing practices. Good knowledge of handwashing, positive attitudes toward handwashing, household water security (HWS), and the presence of handwashing facilities were significantly associated with good handwashing practices. Children aged 6-11 months, HWIS, uncovered and wide-mouthed water storage containers, unsafe child's stool disposal practices, and hands not washed with soap after defecation, before preparing food, and feeding a child were significantly associated with the occurrence of diarrhea. The prevalence of diarrhea and HWIS was very high. The majority of the mothers had poor handwashing practices. Background: Diarrheal disease, characterized by high morbidity and mortality rates, continues to be a serious public health concern, especially in developing nations such as Ethiopia. The significant burden it imposes on these countries underscores the importance of identifying predictors of diarrhea. The use of machine learning techniques to identify significant predictors of diarrhea in children under the age of 5 in Ethiopia's Amhara Region is not well documented. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify these issues., Methods: This study's data have been extracted from the Ethiopian Population and Health Survey. We have applied machine learning ensemble classifier models such as random forests, logistic regression, K-nearest neighbors, decision trees, support vector machines, gradient boosting, and naive Bayes models to predict the determinants of diarrhea in children under the age of 5 in Ethiopia. Finally, Shapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) value analysis was performed to predict diarrhea., Result: Among the seven models used, the random forest algorithm showed the highest accuracy in predicting diarrheal disease with an accuracy rate of 81.03% and an area under the curve of 86.50%. The following factors were investigated: families who had richest wealth status (log odd of -0.04), children without a history of Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) (log odd of -0.08), mothers who did not have a job (log odd of -0.04), children aged between 23 and 36 months (log odd of -0.03), mothers with higher education (log odds ratio of -0.03), urban dwellers (log odd of -0.01), families using electricity as cooking material (log odd of -0.12), children under 5 years of age living in the Amhara region of Ethiopia who did not show signs of wasting, children under 5 years of age who had not taken medications for intestinal parasites unlike their peers and who showed a significant association with diarrheal disease., Conclusion: We recommend implementing programs to reduce the incidence of diarrhea in children under the age of 5 in the Amhara region. Introduction. Data on the frequency of enteric adenoviruses, sapoviruses, and astroviruses in cases of sporadic acute gastroenteritis in Argentina are scarce. Methods. Descriptive design of a selection of fecal samples of children with diarrhea younger than 5 years referred between 2010 and 2021, with a previous negative result for rotavirus and norovirus. The presence of enteric adenovirus, sapovirus, and astrovirus was tested by molecular methods, with subsequent genotyping of positive samples. Results. At least 1 of the tested viruses was detected in 226 (39.4%) of the 574 selected samples. Specifically, adenovirus, sapovirus, and astrovirus were detected in 30.7%, 5.6%, and 3.1% of the samples, respectively. The most frequent viruses detected were adenovirus 41, sapoviruses GI.1 and GI.2, and astrovirus 1. Non-classic astroviruses were detected in 2 samples. Conclusions. Despite being less frequent, these enteropathogens are responsible for a large number of sporadic diarrhea events. Therefore, their study and surveillance contribute significantly to reduce the gap of undiagnosed cases., (Sociedad Argentina de Pediatría.)

Background: Diarrhoea kills 500,000 children every year despite availability of cheap and effective treatment. In addition, a large number are inappropriately treated with antibiotics, which do not benefit the patient but can contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. We investigated whether the prevalence of antibiotic use among children under the age of five with diarrhoea in Uganda changed following a national intervention to increase the use of oral rehydration salts (ORS), and whether any socioeconomic characteristics were associated with antibiotic use., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among caregivers of children under the age of five and among private health care providers and drug sellers in Uganda in 2014. This was compared to a similar survey among private health care providers, and the national demographic and health survey in Uganda in 2016. Logistic regression was used to find associations between antibiotic use and socioeconomic characteristics, and chi-square test and independent sample t-test were used to find significant differences between groups., Results: The prevalence of antibiotic use among children under the age of five with diarrhoea in Uganda decreased from 30.5% in 2014 to 20.0% (p < 0.001) in 2016. No associations between socioeconomic characteristics and the use of antibiotics were significant in both 2014 and 2016., Conclusions: The use of antibiotics in children with diarrhoeal disease decreased significantly in Uganda between 2014 and 2016.
