Diamonds are very promising candidates for the neutron diagnostics in harsh environments such as fusion reactors because of their proven radiation hardness. In comparison to the standard neutron diagnostics currently used (i.e., fission chambers, silicon based detectors, scintillators) CVD diamonds are less sensitive to $\gamma $ rays, which represents a huge background in fusion devices. Furthermore, their low leakage current provides a high energy resolution. A CVD diamond based detector has been proposed for the measurement of the 14 MeV neutrons from DT fusion reaction. The prototype was arranged in a proton recoil telescope configuration, featuring a plastic converter in front of the sensitive volume, in order to induce the (n, n) reactions which generate the recoil protons. The segmentation of the sensitive volume, achieved using two crystals with two dedicated electronic readouts, allowed to perform measurements in coincidence, which suppressed the neutron-carbon elastic scattering background. A preliminary prototype was assembled and tested at FNG (Frascati Neutron Generator), showing promising results regarding efficiency and energy resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

First neutron and X-ray beam tests on a novel 12-pixel singlecrystal diamond mosaic detector are presented and discussed. Preliminary characterization of single-pixel electronic properties, performed with α particles, results in charge carrier mobilities >2000 cm2 Vs-1 and saturation velocities of the order of 107 cm s-1. Signal stability over time, measured with a 241Am source (37 kBq activity), is longer than 5 h. Tests under an intense X-ray beam (1 Gy h-1 dose-rate) show a very good response uniformity (down to about 1% of relative standard deviation from mean value), suggesting a high level of pixel reproducibility at intermediate bias voltages (ranging from 20 to 100 V). Response uniformity reduces at voltages>200 V, due presumably to radiation-assisted detrapping effects. Preliminary results of 12-pixel simultaneous acquisitions of X-ray beam profiles and pulse height spectra under a fast neutron beam (14 MeV) are also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The need of performing high resolution fast neutron spectroscopy in a very harsh environment like that of the Radial Neutron Camera (RNC) of ITER, requires to develop new detectors and methodologies. Diamond detectors have been proved to be excellent candidates but the electronics needs a substantial improvement. Because of the high radiation level and the temperatures expected near the detector positions in the RNC, the electronics must be placed several meters away. A novel Fast Charge Amplifier (FCA) was developed that, connected to a diamond detector using several tens of meters of low capacitance coaxial cable, is able to produce fast output signals suitable to be processed by digital electronics. These fast output signals allow to operate at high count rates avoiding pile-up problems. This novel amplifier connected to a digitizer is here tested in the neutron energy range from 5 to 20.5 MeV using the mono-energetic neutrons produced by the Van de Graaff (VdG) accelerator of the EC-JRC-IRMM and by the PTB cyclotron. From the measurements the experimental response functions of the diamond detector at different neutron energies were obtained. The shape of the response functions have been compared with that predicted with a routine which was implemented for the Monte Carlo code MCNPX with the scope to validate the calculations versus the experimental data. The goal is to develop a tool which allows to calculate the diamond detector response functions also in term of absolute efficiency. This methodology along with the ability to measure at high reaction rates and the insensitivity to radiation damage launches the system described in this paper as a promising method for neutron spectrometry in the RNC of ITER. Artificial crystal diamond neutron detectors are under test at JET tokamak since 2003 and they have demonstrated to be reliable and stable as well as to withstand the harsh working condition available in a large tokamak. Up to now they were used to measure the total and time dependent neutron emission while neutron spectroscopy was never attempted. On the other hand neutron spectrometry con yields important information on the burning plasma and it is requested for future experiments that will use DT plasmas so producing 14 MeV neutrons. Neutron spectrometry can only be attempted by using single crystal diamond (SCD) which, as it has been demonstrated, can show an energy resolution (FWHM) as low as 0.5%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
