The interest towards Anton Chekhov’s theatre entered a new phase in the end of the seventies of the 20th century in Barcelona. A quarter of century after Franco’s death the translations of Chekhov’s plays into Catalan and representations thereof recorded a new growth: translators and artists were trying to fill the gap resulting from the cultural crisis suffered under the dictatorship by introducing into the national cultural system some of the most recognized authors of the world, already considered classics in the western neighbour countries (France, Great Britain, Germany). The 100th anniversary of Chekhov’s death offered a perfect occasion to pay tribute to the Russian author’s memory. The present research sums up the principal events dedicated to the centenary of Chekhov’s death in 2004 in Barcelona and focuses on the staging of “Uncle Vanya” by Joan Ollé, one of the most memorable interpretations of this play in Catalonia, in order to evaluate the reception thereof through the analysis of periodical issues. Based on Hans-Robert Jauss’s approach to the literature as a constant interaction between the work of art, the public and the author, the study sheds light on the reception of Chekhov’s theatre in Catalonia and its evolution from the first direct translation of the play until a key staging which, in turn, became a reference for the following generations. The analysis concludes that the centenary of Chekhov’s death may be considered an inflection point in the history of his reception in Catalonia. Thanks to the production of the first canonical staging of “Uncle Vanya” in Catalan, Chekhov’s name stopped being associated exclusively with popular performances produced by foreign companies.

This paper discusses the development of an international education event at a university in the Southeastern United States. The event aimed to promote meaningful dialogue between international students and domestic attendees and was hosted in November of 2022. Participants included 12 international students who were invited to share their experiences and views on the education systems of their home countries and the United States. In addition, six local students and one faculty member attended the event. The paper begins by explaining the importance of having international education events as well as the benefits of intercultural communication. It then proceeds to explain the planning process of the international education event and provides some key takeaways. Empathy, broadly defined as the ability to experience another's emotions and perceptions, is one of the major attitudes and actions underpinning an individual's participation in dialogue across diversity. The goal of this methodological paper is to operationalize empathy as a discursive construct, manifested in children and adolescent dialogic interactions. A coding scheme is developed based on three distinct steps. First, a review of the operational definitions of empathy is carried out, to capture how its related values, skills, and dispositions have been detected thus far. Second, the definitional elements resulting from this overview are represented in the dialogical notion of other-orientedness, which can be manifested, actually and potentially, in discourse. Moves are distinguished in 8 categories based on their disposition to be potentially other-oriented (dialogicity), which becomes actually manifested depending on their relevance to the discourse they are used in. The article analyzes the global multipolar processes, to which representatives of all cultures of the world are involved today. There is an opinion that only intercultural dialogue in the near future should help to create a world solidary society, truly free and fair for all peoples, nations and countries, and not only for the "golden billion". In this context, the main task of the dialogue is to reconcile the representatives of different cultures and coordinate their efforts in joint activities to resolve political, environmental, socio-economic and demographic problems, to help all civilizations achieve social stability and socioeconomic growth. Special attention is paid to the analysis of S. Huntington's ideas about the confrontation that exists in intercultural communication between the West and other countries, as well as the determining factors of cultural identity (blood and faith, language, religion and family). People associate with those with whom they are in common and seek those with whom they are different. The article also analyzes the method of archetypes (proposed by S. Krymsky) as a mechanism for resolving conflicts arising in the intercultural communication of various ethnic groups. Its essence boils down to the fact that in ethnic conflicts that relate to the archetypal level of mentality of a certain people, representatives of different cultures should be bred. Ethnic groups, historically already have a common positive experience (in solving economic and political problems), it is much easier to understand each other and resolve any future conflicts on the way of integration.

It is hard to imagine an inter-cultural dialogue as an immediate and direct communication between the national and ethnic minorities, and the majority of the population is impossible. However, today’s mass media connect these two social groups through the Internet and provide a platform to exchange their views online. Modern «dialogue» through the online mass media is possible with the help of interviews with minorities. Online media provide a platform for communication of different segments of the population by organizing a dialogue between representatives of different cultures. This study aims to evaluate the possibility of such a «dialogue», and its implementation in the online version of the newspaper «Le Monde». We believe that the media, being in a position to create a space for the dialogue between minority and majority, have a significant influence on the content produced by selecting quotes, articles for publication, and conducting interviews within the given topic, avoiding any derogation. During the time of terrorist attacks in Europe in 2015-2016, the voice of the French Muslim minority and migrants living in the country was expected to be heard. One of the most visited French websites lemonde.fr did not provide the significant opportunity to speak to these categories of citizens, limiting their opinions by official representatives’ statements.

The purpose of this theoretical research is to analyze and explain the contribution of public relations in intercultural dialogue within social organizations. To do this we resorted to investigating the social conflicts occurred during 2020; as well as to describe how the use of communication tools, in particular intercultural dialogue, can promote understanding and empathy in the face of different social problems. The communicative management that a public relations professional must carry out through effective communication must aim at mutual understanding between government and citizens, highlighting the active participation of the community, emphasizing the active participation of the community and the value represented by the continuous debate between the citizens and their institutions. For public relations professionals, it is a challenge to carry out intercultural communication with the purpose of solving the serious problems of dialogue and lack of understanding, thus recognizing the importance of maintaining a strategic organizational communication, where the messages are bidirectional, generating thus greater interaction and, above all, the resolution of social conflicts. Urgency of the research. Modern globalization covers all spheres of human life–social, economic, political, cultural, environmental, technological. On the one hand, it has led to future shock, a gap in time when a person does not have time to realize the ultra-rapid social changes around him and adapt to them. On the other hand, the relationship and communication between different ethnic groups has gained a planetary scale and formed a world society in which intercultural dialogue between Western culture and the cultures of other ethnic groups begin to play a dominant role. Moreover, Western culture seeks to absorb the national identity of different peoples under the banner of Westernization, imposing on the rest of the world Western institutions and socio-cultural orientations. This, in turn, exacerbates the confrontation of cultures and causes a large number of conflicts. These circumstances highlight the research topic and the importance of solving the problem of intercultural communication between the West and other countries in the process of globalization. Target setting. The need to establish intercivilizational dialogue and integration of humanity at the highest spiritual principles in the era of globalization is a signal of a serious protracted crisis that has developed in relations between Western and Eastern civilizations as major players in the world political arena. That is why the problem of finding ways to overcome this crisis requires a serious socio-philosophical analysis of the role of intercultural dialogue in resolving modern world conflicts, as well as those deep (archetypal) factors that determine the specific behaviour of different types of cultures. Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. The development of modern philosophy of dialogue is associated with such outstanding philosophers as M. Bakhtin, M. Buber, V. Bibler, V. Kuchinsky, who studied the nature of dialogue - its features, structure and functions. The dialogical nature of thinking was analyzed by L. Vygotsky, A. Leontiev, S. Rubinstein, A. Sokolov and others. Role-based dialogical interaction in communication was the subject of research by A. Dobrovich, V. Myasishchev, J. Yanoushek. The problem of dialogue in the context of intercultural communication was studied by S. Huntington, S. Krymsky, Y. Pavlenko, Y. Pakhomov and other scientists. The works of A. Ermolenko, V. Paniotto, S. Osipenko, M. Mikhalchenko, L. Gubersky and other scientists are devoted to the study of the specifics of modern dialogue in the context of the global civilizational crisis, who emphasize the need to form a culture of dialogue and develop readiness for effective communication even with ideological opponents. The research objective. Evaluate the role of this euristic potential for dialogue in the context of global problems of participation. Analyze S. Gantington's ideas about the day-to-day dialogue in the context of the multicultural community. As the dominant global media, Western media face constant ethical challenges. In a fast-paced, fast-changing world post-9/11, Western media have been accused of misrepresenting Islam and Muslims through biased reporting and misinformation. Muslims are often depicted as a homogenous group prone to acts of terrorism. Unsurprisingly, Muslims are cautious, if not resentful, of Western media that perpetuate Islamophobia. There needs to be more discussion on intercultural views of ethical communication if journalists and media outlets are serious about building trust and upholding ethical standards in reporting. Other cultural paradigms in media studies are needed to inform our practice for culturally diverse environments. This paper explores Western perspectives of dialogic and persuasive communication that are taught in the foundation year of media and communication tertiary study and compares them with the Islamic perspective, offering an insight into this untapped area. Unlike the traditional Western conceptual framework of dialogue and persuasion as separate entities that are potentially unethical, the Islamic perspective identifies both models as ethical and not mutually exclusive. One Anglo-based innovative study that applied quantum theory to communication on social media, argued for an interconnected relationship between dialogue and persuasion where the two can become entangled while existing in a state of superposition. It echoes the Islamic view except for the unethical potential and ambivalent application of either model. This preliminary study has implications for the practice of peace and conflict journalism, investigative journalism, and development journalism, which report on issues relating to Islam and the Muslim environments.

This study investigates the question of how to build an inclusive environment for intercultural dialogue. Using the university campus as a context for our research, we conducted a facilitated idea generation workshop in which participants identified a set of dialogic competencies, followed by individual interviews in which we explored participants' perceptions of the relationships among these competencies. Interviews were conducted utilizing a software‐assisted, idea‐structuring methodology referred to as Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). Based on our results, we constructed a framework that depicts the overall flow of influence among the set of dialogic competencies identified by the participants. While findings confirm the importance placed in current literature on factors such as listening and empathy, they provide a more sophisticated and nuanced perspective on how to accomplish one of the oft‐stated goals of intercultural dialogue, which is to help participants examine their unconscious biases, prejudices, and privileges. In this paper, we explore intercultural communication as dialogue occurring in a third space. Through seven students' reflective essays on group-based intercultural learning, we analyse the ever-shifting communicative space that interlocutors produce through negotiating the meanings of difference and power and their dialogic relations with the other. Based on the findings, we propose intercultural dialogue (and intercultural communication) as a political and ethical response to the thirdness in the in-between space of communication, inherent in the character of social life but not always possible nor desired. We therefore suggest 'principles' for such dialogue be seen in this space and not as a teleologically-achievable ideal that privileges self-expression and normalises difference through a 'cultural diversity' discourse. Yuri Vella (1948-2013) was a well-known personality in Western Siberia's indigenous world. Unlike most Western Siberia indigenous inhabitants, Yuri Vella was exceptionally skilled with words. He used words in everyday life in order to achieve his goals, among which the main one was to protect his kin and neighbours in the forest from the destructions induced by the oil industry. He was able to hold his own in discussion with the oil industry representatives and to have the last word with them. But how did Yuri Vella use words in private life? That is what months of fieldwork sharing the hut he lived in with his wife allowed me to ascertain. I shall concentrate on patterns of speaking - how? with whom? - and silence in everyday life, outside the attention of an audience. The article is devoted to the problems of dialog as one of the ways of increasing knowledge and motivation of foreign students in the field of Russian language and culture.

Although many think, or wish to think, that racism in the United States is part of our peripheral past, contemporary discourses of racial and ethnic relations suggest otherwise. Discussions of ethnicity and race are still at the forefront of public discourse. The recent publication of news articles citing celebrity chef Paula Deen’s use of ethnophaulisms and prejudiced talk resulted in thousands of user-generated comments and responses. This article purports, then, to highlight the current discourses of racial and ethnic relations as revealed through online responses to one particular ethnophaulism used by celebrity chef Paula Deen. Important to this discussion, however, is the interesting finding that comments made by readers spoke to larger “meta” discourses of language use: Users commented about contemporary American race and racial relations and how we use (or do not use) language with specific purposes and power in mind, rather than the specific case of Paula Deen’s utterance. This paper studies the patterns of communication among the ethnic groups living in the Transylvanian rural district of Cata, aiming at identifying the people's willingness to communicate and the non-conflictual nature of the dialogue in this rural area. The framework employed in the analysis is Dell Hymes's (1974) interactional S-P-E-A-K-I-N-G schema. The study is based on data collected by the first author during two periods (August - September, 2012 and January, 2013), using two instruments: the direct, participant observation and the interview. The participants are representatives of four ethnic groups, namely Romanians, Hungarians, Germans and Roma people. The findings of the analysis show that the inter-ethnic communication in Cata is non-conflictual and non-exclusive due to the people's openness to adapt to the others and that the limitations of the intercultural dialogue are rather suggested by the administrative authorities and the national ethnic organizations. Different cultures collide more often now than in the past. Therefore developing skills that address an efficient intercultural communication becomes a critical aspect in today's life. The purpose of our research is to identify to what extent different universities worldwide include in their curriculum the study o intercultural communication. We are also interested how the different intercultural (business) communication syllabi provided by these universities look like, and to compare their content in terms of efficiency and effectiveness in building intercultural communication skills. The analysis of intercultural communication, which is adopted in mainstream applied linguistics and communication studies, aims to explain the meaning of cultural differences and identities in the present global world. The present analysis of intercultural communication is based on theories of cultural variability, which highlight the basic distinctions between values determining cultural differences and identities. Some studies in applied linguistics observe cultural variability as a discursive construction based on a form of epistemological essentialism, produced in the Western part of the world to give meaning to its hegemony. However, these studies share some epistemological foundations with theories of cultural variability. This paper proposes a theorization of intercultural communication, which explains cultural differences and identities as constructed in communication systems and based on their particular structural presuppositions. In this perspective, the hegemonic structure of intercultural communication is ethnocentrism, including the presuppositions of Us/Them basic distinction, positioning of individuals as members of cultural groups and normative expectations about displays of We-identities. This theorisation also provides an explanation of the discursive construction of new hybrid forms of identity, which are observed as a result of globalisation, and of the interdependence between local and global communication systems. Finally, this theorization leads to explain the meaning of intercultural dialogue, which is presented as an alternative to ethnocentrism. The open question regards the explanation of dialogue as either a new discursive construction of hegemonic Western culture or a new structure, introducing equality in participation, sensitivity for participants' personal expressions and expectations of participants' empowerment in local and global communication systems. In this study, the author investigates the dynamics of dialogue among teachers in different national contexts based on their responses to different cultural practices. Employing Pierre Bourdieu's sociological theory of practice and his concept of habitus, the author shows that, as the teachers' responses are not entirely context-specific, they are not autonomous either. In the final section, the author discusses the importance of attending to limits and barriers of dialogue across differences. Moreover, she further posits that recognizing the difficulties involved in productive dialogue is essential for achieving the transformative educational goals that promote a less dominating and less hierarchical approach. The assumptions implicit in this work are that the scholars and practitioners from diverse backgrounds bring unique perspectives to teaching and learning; and, therefore, productive dialogues among teachers from various backgrounds can open up a generative space that enables the active co-construction of new perspectives. The article deals with the issue of intercultural communication, especially concerning a potential for consensus among cultures by means of an intercultural dialogue on human rights. It is a contribution towards overcoming the confrontations among civilizations and to the eradication of the coercive imposing of human rights onto other cultures. The paper demonstrates that the intercultural promotion of human rights across individual cultures that recognize each other is one of the effective forms of resistance against people being misrecognized. However, this requires a formulation of human rights based on the values of individual cultures and the dialogue among them. This essay provides an overview of what is currently being done in the discipline of communication studies that can advance deliberative democracy, particularly in terms of student learning, and explores how those connections could be strengthened and extended. The essay is divided into three main sections. First, a brief history of the field of communication studies is provided. Next, four questions relevant to deliberative theory and practice are introduced and the teaching and research of communication scholars that provides significant responses are examined: (1) how do we improve how citizens process information and exercise judgment?, (2) how do we best deal the differences in our increasingly diverse communities?, (3) how can we better understand the processes and outcomes of deliberation?, and (4) what are the key future directions for deliberative theory and practice? Within this section, a number of the sub-fields within communication studies that connect directly or indirectly to deliberative work are introduced. The essay concludes with a review of the limitations to these connections and a “call to action” for increased public engagement.

The present article offers an overview of the concept of 'othering' from the field of intercultural and postcolonial theories, and discusses empirical processes of 'othering' through a small 'experiment' with Master students in journalism, media and communication from Bangladesh and Nepal at Dhaka University in November 2010. The issue of concern is how socio-cultural diversity and societal integration exist in a relationship of greater or lesser tension, depending on the degree of relexivity and flexibility of collective identities. The article is based upon a small qualitative research study that explored the awareness of group identity in intercultural communication. This study explores the lived experiences of people who act as allies in the interest of social justice. Interviews were conducted to investigate the meaning of the ally identity and the tactics allies use to interrupt stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination against others. Findings suggest that people who speak out on behalf of social justice from positions of relative power do so (a) out of identity concerns that emphasize moral obligations, (b) largely through authoritative and dialogic strategies that draw on their symbolic capital, and (c) in ways that reflect ideologies of culturally dominant groups. The study also describes tensions arising out of the contradictory nature of deploying social power against the system that confers it. Conventional definitions of “allies” that rely on static notions of power, finally, are challenged as too simplistic. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This essay suggests the concept of dialogue as an exemplar of seminal literature that has had wide application in the past and continues to do so at present. A look at the uses of dialogue as part of the peace process in Northern Ireland provides a model. We can only hope that the current calls for dialogue to settle the most immediate crisis points in the Middle East and North Africa will be more effective than the violent repressions and revolutions, and the resort to war that have plagued the region throughout history. Abstract: Broadcasting since 1983, Radio LoRa in Zurich is one of the oldest community radios in the German-speaking world. Men and women with a migrant background have been involved in the radio since its onset and today programmes are aired in more than 20 languages. To promote closer cooperation between radio-makers of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Radio LoRa started developing specific projects, initially focussing on multilingual programming. Over time, the perspective of “integration”, often the primary concern of funding institutions, evolved into a more articulated intercultural approach, abandoning the narrow label of “migrant” and opening up to a plurality of cultural cosmovisions, methods, forms, expressions and languages. The projects that followed aimed at creating dialogue between different age groups, gender(s), sexual orientations, socio-economic conditions, political perspectives and cultural backgrounds, providing a framework for relationships of equity based on the respect of differences. Adopting interculturality at LoRa as a philosophical option, an ethical and political project, an approach to social development, also facilitated participatory processes and identification with the radio as a whole, beyond the single individual programmes. This article will discuss some of the challenges, methods and formats of intercultural work in community radios, based on the experiences at Radio LoRa from 2003 to 2008. It will also provide a broader perspective on intercultural efforts in the alternative media landscape in Switzerland, referring to the work of klipp & klang radiokurse, the Swiss community radio training organization and one of the partners of the EU project Inter.Media – Intercultural Media Training in Europe (2004–2006). klipp & klang radiokurse has developed frameworks for the implementation of the Inter.Media training modules and for the exchange of experiences in intercultural project work amongst the non-commercial radios in Switzerland, motivating more radios to embark on the intercultural path. Communication is the basic concept in explaining globalization. Globalization can be observed as the worldwide expansion of a functionally differentiated European society through intercultural communication. In this society, since the 17th century, intercultural communication has assumed the form of a modernist ethnocentrism based on values such as knowledge, pluralism and individualism. During the 20th century, historical changes created the necessity for new forms of intercultural communication. In the last decade of that century, a transcultural form of communication based on dialogue was proposed as a basis for cross-cultural adaptation, a creation of multicultural identities and a construction of a hybrid multicultural society. However, this transcultural form creates paradoxes and difficulties in intercultural communication, mixing the preservation of cultural difference with the search for synthesis. Consequently, a new form of intercultural dialogue, dealing with incommensurable differences and managing conflicts, is needed to create coordination among different cultural perspectives.
