Previous studies exploring the relationship between dietary potassium and magnesium intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have yielded inconsistent results and the lack evidence from rural China. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary potassium and magnesium intake and the risk of T2DM in rural China. Data was collected from the Henan Rural Cohort Study in 2017. A validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire assessed dietary potassium and magnesium intake. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the effect of dietary potassium, magnesium and the potassium-magnesium ratio on the risk of T2DM. A total of 38384 individuals were included in the study, and 3616 participants developed T2DM. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the OR (95% CI) of the highest versus dietary potassium and magnesium and potassium-magnesium ratio intakes were 0.67 (0.59, 0.75), 0.76 (0.67, 0.88), and 0.57 (0.50, 0.66), respectively, compared to the subjects with the lowest quartile of intakes. In addition, gender partially influences the relationship between dietary magnesium and T2DM prevalence (P- interaction = 0.042). The group with the highest dietary potassium and dietary magnesium intake had the lowest risk of T2DM, with an OR (95% CI) of 0.63 (0.51-0.77). Dietary potassium and magnesium intake are important modifiable risk factors for T2DM in rural China. Dietary potassium intake > 1.8g/day, dietary magnesium intake > 358.6mg/day and < 414.7mg/day and potassium-magnesium ratio >5.1 should be encouraged to prevent better and manage T2DM., (© 2023. Background and Aims: Human studies about short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), the gut microbiome, and Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are limited. Here we explored the association between SCFAs and T2DM and the effects of gut microbial diversity on glucose status in rural populations., Methods and Results: We performed a cross-sectional study from the Henan Rural Cohort and collected stool samples. Gut microbiota composition and faecal SCFA concentrations were measured by 16S rRNA and GC-MS. The population was divided based on the tertiles of SCFAs, and logistic regression models assessed the relationship between SCFAs and T2DM. Generalized linear models tested the interactions between SCFAs and gut microbial diversity on glucose indicators (glucose, HbAlc and insulin). Compared to the lowest tertile of total SCFA, acetate and butyrate, the highest tertile exhibited lower T2DM prevalence, with ORs and 95% CIs of 0.291 (0.085-0.991), 0.160 (0.044-0.574) and 0.171 (0.047-0.620), respectively. Restricted cubic spline demonstrated an approximately inverse S-shaped association. We also noted interactions of the ACE index with the highest tertile of valerate on glucose levels (P-interaction = 0.022) and the Shannon index with the middle tertile of butyrate on insulin levels (P-interaction = 0.034). Genus Prevotella&#95;9 and Odoribacter were inversely correlated with T2DM, and the genus Blautia was positively associated with T2DM. These bacteria are common SCFA-producing members., Conclusions: Inverse S-shaped associations between SCFAs (total SCFA, acetate, and butyrate) and T2DM were observed. Evidence of the relationship between fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) levels, dietary quality and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in rural populations is limited. Here, we aimed to investigate the association between fecal SCFA levels and T2DM and the combined effects of dietar quality on T2DM in rural China. In total, 100 adults were included in the case-control study. Dietary quality was assessed by the Alternate Healthy Eating Index 2010 (AHEI-2010), and SCFA levels were analysed using the GC-MS system. Generalised linear regression was conducted to calculate the OR and 95 % CI to evaluate the effect of SCFA level and dietary quality on the risk of T2DM. Finally, an interaction was used to study the combined effect of SCFA levels and AHEI-2010 scores on T2DM. T2DM participants had lower levels of acetic and butyric acid. Generalised linear regression analysis revealed that the OR (95 % CI) of the highest acetic and butyric acid levels were 0·099 (0·022, 0·441) and 0·210 (0·057, 0·774), respectively, compared with the subjects with the lowest tertile of level. We also observed a significantly lower risk of T2DM with acetic acid levels > 1330·106 μg/g or butyric acid levels > 585·031 μg/g. Moreover, the risks of higher acetic and butyric acid levels of T2DM were 0·007 (95 % CI: 0·001, 0·148), 0·005 (95 % CI: 0·001, 0·120) compared with participants with lower AHEI-2010 scores (all P < 0·05). Acetate and butyrate levels may be important modifiable beneficial factors affecting T2DM in rural China. Improving dietary quality for body metabolism balance should be encouraged to promote good health.

Purpose: To investigate the association between low-carbohydrate diet scores (LCDs) and the risk of type 2 diabetes in rural China., Methods: A total of 38,100 adults were included in the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Macronutrient intake was assessed via a validated food-frequency questionnaire to create low-carbohydrate diet (LCD) scores. Multivariate logistic regression models and subgroup analysis were performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI)., Results: After multivariable adjustment, participants with a high total low-carbohydrate diet score have a high risk of T2D (extreme-quartile OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.04-1.41; P = 0.007), whereas plant-based LCD score is not related to T2D risk. Among individuals with a BMI < 24 (extreme-quartile OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.01-1.47; P < 0.001) or high levels of physical activity (extreme-quartile OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.17-1.72; P < 0.001), the animal-based LCD score is positively correlated with the risk of T2D., Conclusion: Among Chinese rural populations, high-fat-low carbohydrate diet is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. High intake of animal protein and fat also increases T2D risk in those who are overweight or have high physical activity., (© 2024. Background: This study aimed to investigate the geographical distribution of dietary patterns and their association with T2DM among Chinese adults aged 45 years and above., Methods: Data was from the China Adults Chronic Diseases and Nutrition Surveillance (2015). Dietary intake for each participant was determined through a combination of 3-day 24-h dietary recall interviews and food frequency questionnaires. Principal component analysis was used to extract dietary patterns and spatial analysis was employed to investigate the geographic distribution of them. T2DM was diagnosed using criteria of ADA 2018, and binary logistic regression was employed to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and T2DM., Results: A total of 36,648 participants were included in the study; 10.9% of them were diagnosed as T2DM. Three dietary patterns were identified with the name of plant-based pattern, animal-based pattern, and oriental traditional pattern, which were represented located in northern, northwest, and southern regions, respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders, participants in the highest quartile of the plant-based pattern were associated with lower T2DM odds (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.74, 0.90) when comparing with the lowest quartile. However, participants inclined to higher quartiles of animal-based pattern had a higher risk of T2DM (OR = 1.15, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.27) compared with those in the lower quartiles. No significant association was found between the oriental traditional pattern and T2DM (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.93, 1.14)., Conclusion: Dietary patterns of Chinese population revealed geographical disparities, with plant-based dietary pattern showing protective effects and animal-based pattern carrying high risks for T2DM. Regional dietary variations and food environment are paramount in T2DM prevention and management.

Objective: To investigate the macronutrient and food intake of diabetics aged 45 years and above in China., Methods: The research data was based on the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance in 2015. The dietary nutrition status of diabetics living in community was investigated by questionnaire, condiments weighing and 3 days-24 hours dietary questionnaire. Assessment was compared with the recommended amount of macronutrient energy supply ratio in The guideline for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in China(2020 edition). The macronutrient energy supply ratio of patients with different types of diabetes was evaluated and their food intake was statistically analyzed., Results: The median of daily intake of total energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate were 1585 kcal, 50.1 g, 62.4 g and 200.1 g, respectively. The energy ratios of protein, fat and carbohydrate were 12.6%, 36.3% and 52.1%, respectively. In diabetics, the proportion of protein, fat and carbohydrate energy ratios that meet the recommendations in The guideline for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in China(2020 edition) were 20.5%, 21.7% and 40.4%, respectively., Conclusion: There is an unreasonable macronutrient energy ratio in the diet of diabetic over 45 years old in China, which mainly shows that the proportion of protein energy supply ratio in most diabetics is low, and the proportion of fat energy ratio exceeds the standard is high.

Background and Aims: The relationship between reproductive factors and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is controversial; therefore, we explored the causal relationship of age at menarche (AAM), age at natural menopause (ANM), with the risk of T2D and glycemic traits using two-sample Mendelian randomization., Methods and Results: We used publicly available data at the summary level of genome-wide association studies, where AAM (N = 329,345), ANM (N = 69,360), T2D (N = 464,389). The inverse variance weighting (IVW) method was employed as the primary method. To demonstrate the robustness of the results, we also conducted various sensitivity analysis methods including the MR-Egger regression, the weighted median (WM) and the MR Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier (MR-PRESSO) test. After excluding IVs associated with confounders, we found a causal association between later AAM and reduced risk of T2D (OR 0.81 [95% CI 0.75, 0.87]; P = 2.20 × 10 -8 ), lower levels of FI (β -0.04 [95% CI -0.06, -0.01]; P = 2.19 × 10 -3 ), FPG (β -0.03 [95% CI -0.05, -0.007]; P = 9.67 × 10 -5 ) and HOMA-IR (β -0.04 [95% CI -0.06, -0.01]; P = 4,95 × 10 -3 ). As for ANM, we only found a causal effect with HOMA-IR (β -0.01 [95% CI -0.02, -0.005]; P = 1.77 × 10 -3 ), but not with T2D., Conclusions: Our MR study showed a causal relationship between later AAM and lower risk of developing T2D, lower FI, FPG and HOMA-IR levels. Objective: To investigate the dietary fiber intake status and analyze the relationship between dietary fiber and glucose metabolic disorder of the elderly in China., Methods: Data were collected from the participants of Chinese adult chronic diseases and nutrition surveillance in 2015. General information were collected by standardized questionnaires, anthropometric index and blood pressure of respondents were measured according to standard method. Food intake was collected by three consecutive day 24 h dietary recalls, dietary fiber was calculated through China food composition. Fasting venous blood were collected to measure glucose, HbA1C, and other related biochemical index. Subjects were divided into three groups: normal glucose(NG, normal glucose), pre-diabetes(Pre-DM, pre-diabetes mellitus) and diabetes(T2DM, type 2 diabetes mellitus). Multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between dietary fiber intake and Pre-DM as well as T2DM., Results: A total of 20 996 elderly people aged 60 years and above were included. There 10 773 cases were males(51.3%) and 10 223 cases were females(48.7%), the age of both gender were(68.21±6.26) years and(67.67±6.26) years. A total of 6526 cases of pre-diabetes were detected in 20 996 elderly participants with detection rate of 31.1%. There 3274 cases were male and 3252 cases were female, the detection rates of both genders were 30.4% and 31.8%, respectively. While 1572 participants were detected as T2DM(784 of males and 788 of females), the detection rate of T2DM was 7.5%, 7.3% for males and 7.7% for females. There were significant differences in mean age, BMI, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, HbA1c level among different dietary intake groups(P&lt;0.005). With the increase of dietary fiber intake, the proportion of overweight and obesity, central obesity and dyslipidemia showed an increasing trend(P&lt;0.05), and the proportion of hypertension showed a decreasing trend(P&lt;0.000 1). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, compared to participants with lowest fiber intake, participants in subgroups of lower, minor lower, and higher fiber intake were associated with decreased risk of pre-diabetes, the OR and 95%CI were(OR=0.911, 95%CI 0.835-0.993), (OR= 0.861, 95%CI 0.790-0.938) and(OR= 0.913, 95%CI 0.838-0.994), respectively. However, there was only a statistically significant negative association between the higher intake of dietary fiber and T2DM(OR = 0.848, 95%CI 0.726-0.991)., Conclusion: Dietary fiber intake was negatively related with diabetes and pre-diabetes mellitus. The risk of glucose metabolic disorder was decreased with the increase of dietary fiber intake.

Purpose: To investigate the association of sleep duration with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a rural Chinese population., Methods: A 1:1 matched nested case-control study was performed based on a cohort that had been established in rural communities in Henan Province, China. T2DM patients and healthy controls (550 pairs) were included in this study., Results: Abnormal sleep duration significantly increased the risk of T2DM with an approximate U-shaped association (sleep duration ≤ 6 h, OR = 1.742, 95% CI = 1.007-3.011, P = 0.047; sleep duration 8-9 h, OR = 1.462, 95% CI = 1.038-2.060, P = 0.030) compared with participants with a night sleep duration of 7-8 h, after adjusting for multiple confounders. When stratified by gender, only women were sensitive to shorter sleep duration (OR = 2.483, 95% CI = 1.149-5.366, P = 0.021). Abnormal sleep duration (too short or too long) had adverse effects on homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) and blood metabolites, and the effect was more noticeable in people with longer sleep durations., Conclusion: In a rural Chinese population, both too short and too long sleep duration increased the risk of T2DM. Especially women with less sleep duration have a higher risk of T2DM. Abnormal sleep also affects the HOMA index and metabolites; the relationship between HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, and LDL-Cholesterol with sleep duration was U-shaped, while fasting plasma glucose, body mass index, waist circumference, and triglyceride levels increased significantly only with longer sleep duration., (© 2021. Objective: It is not clear whether ideal cardiovascular health (ICH) metrics have an impact on the association between age at menarche and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in rural postmenopausal Chinese women. Methods: In all, 15,450 postmenopausal women were enrolled from the Henan Rural Cohort study. Logistic regression models and interaction plots were used to analyze associations between age at menarche, ICH metrics and T2DM and interactive effects. Results: Age at menarche was inversely associated with risk of T2DM, with adjusted OR of 1.224, 1.116, 1.00 and 0.971, 0.850 for those with age at menarche ≤13, 14, 15-16 (reference), 17, and ≥18 years, respectively, and each year of delay in menarche age correlated with a 5.1% lower risk of T2DM. Negative interaction effects of age at menarche and number of ICH metrics on the risk of T2DM was observed. Background and Aims: Evidence on the association of snoring, daily sleep duration (daytime napping and night sleep duration) with hyperuricemia (HUA) was limited, especially in the resources-poor areas. This study aimed to investigate the independent effect of snoring frequency and daily sleep duration on HUA prevalence in rural Chinese adults., Methods and Results: 29,643 participants aged 18-79 years were included in the final cross-sectional analysis from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Multivariate logistic regression and linear regression models with HUA and serum uric acid (SUA) levels as dependent variables were conducted, respectively. Of the 29,643 included adults, 3498 suffered from HUA. Compared to never snoring, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of HUA for rare snoring, occasional snoring, and habitual snoring were 1.35 (1.17, 1.56), 1.30 (1.14, 1.47), and 1.59 (1.47, 1.73), respectively (P for trend <0.001). Compared with no napping, participants who had daytime napping of 61-90 and > 91 min were associated with a 29% and 30% increase in the prevalence of HUA, respectively (P for trend <0.001). But in night sleep duration groups, no significant associations were observed. Magnesium is an essential element and participates in many metabolic pathways. Inadequate magnesium levels may lead to various health problems such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, and cancer. But the role of Mg in childbearing women of China is still a relatively narrow researched field. We aimed to assess the Mg nutritional status, explore the risk factors of Mg deficiency, and the associations between Mg and glucose parameters among childbearing women in a nationally representative sample. A total of 1895 18-44 years childbearing women were recruited from the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance (2015). Multivariate logistic regression was used to explore the risk factors for Mg deficiency and estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the risk of hyperglycemia. The mean value of Mg was 0.87 mmol/L and the prevalence of deficiency was 4.69%. The risk factors of Mg deficiency (Mg < 0.75 mmol/L) was city-type of rural ( p = 0.045), while calcium ( p = 0.001), LDL-C ( p = 0.024), age group of 26-35 years ( p = 0.016), 36-44 years ( p = 0.006), and CNNM2 rs3740393 genotypes of GC ( p = 0.027) were protective factors. It was also found that magnesium deficiency induces an increase in plasma glucose ( p = 0.001). Compared with the reference range, Mg < 0.75 mmol/L would have a 6.53 fold risk for T2DM, a 5.31 fold risk for glucose-hyperglycemia, and a 9.60 fold risk for HbA1c-hyperglycemia. Consistently, there was a negative association between plasma Mg and blood glucose parameters in the dose-response study. More attention should be paid to the nutritional status of magnesium and the impact of magnesium deficiency on human health.

The purpose of this study was to examine the association between dietary protein intake and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among a Chinese rural elderly population. We used the demographic and dietary information of adults over age 65 in the Henan Rural Cohort Study to identify and pair 950 T2DM patients with healthy controls in a 1 : 1 matched case-control study. Dietary data was collected through a Food Frequency Questionnaire. A multivariate logistic regression model was applied to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of T2DM risk according to protein intake. After adjustment for confounding factors, higher intake of total protein was negatively associated with T2DM risk in the total population (extreme-tertile OR=0.75, 95% CI: 0.58-0.93) and women (extreme-tertile OR=0.84, 95% CI: 0.47-0.93). Multivariate-adjusted ORs for the risk of T2DM in the highest compared with lowest tertile of plant protein intake in the total population and in women were 0.86 (95% CI: 0.60-0.84) and 0.58 (95% CI: 0.36-0.95), respectively. Our results suggest that the protein intake, especially plant protein, has a significant association with the risk of T2DM in rural elderly populations, and the sources of protein may be also important in future guidelines.

Background: The study aimed to characterize the prevalence of alcohol consumption and further investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Methods: We studied 39,259 participants aged 18 to 79 years of the Henan Rural Cohort study. The associations between alcohol consumption and T2DM were examined using the logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline., Results: For men, alcohol abstinence was associated with an increased risk of T2DM (1.491(1.265, 1.758)), whereas current drinkers were not associated with T2DM (1.03(0.91, 1.15)). Further analysis of alcohol drinkers revealed that only high-risk drinkers of WHO drinking risk levels increased the risk of T2DM (1.289(1.061,1.566)) compared to never drinkers. The risk of T2DM increased as the age of starting to consume alcohol decreased and as the number of years of consuming alcohol and the alcohol intake increased only in men. We further found that the risk of T2DM decreased as the number of years of abstinence increases and no association between alcohol abstinence and T2DM was found after more than 10 years of abstinence among men., Conclusions: Our results suggested that reducing the amount of alcohol consumed and adhering to abstinence from alcohol consumption are beneficial in reducing the risk of T2DM., Trial Registration: The Henan Rural Cohort Study has been registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Register (Registration number: ChiCTR-OOC-15006699). Aims/introduction: Studies have found that a plant-based diet was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, but evidence is scarce on such associations in China. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a plant-based diet is related to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes among Chinese adults., Materials and Methods: A total of 37,985 participants were enrolled from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. An overall plant-based diet index (PDI) was created by assigning positive and reverse scores to 12 commonly consumed food groups. Multivariate logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline analysis were performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI)., Results: After multivariable adjustment, the risk of type 2 diabetes was inversely associated with the PDI (extreme-quartile OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.79-0.98; P = 0.027), the risk associated with a 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in PDI was 4% lower (95% CI, 0.93-1.00; P  trend  = 0.043) for type 2 diabetes. Moreover, the odds of type 2 diabetes was decreased with an increment of PDI after fitting restricted cubic splines (P trend  < 0.01)., Conclusions: Among Chinese populations, diets higher in plant foods and lower in animal foods were associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes., (© 2021 The Authors. Background: Previous reports about health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) concentrated on general patients rather than patients in rural areas with poor infrastructure and limited resources. Thus, the aims of this study were to evaluate the HRQoL of diabetics in the countryside and explore its influencing factors., Methods: A total of 23 053 participants aged from 18 to 79 years were drawn from the Henan Rural Cohort Study for this cross-sectional study. The HRQoL of participants were assessed by utility index and VAS-score of European Quality of Life Five Dimension Five Level Scale (EQ-5D-5L) instrument. Binary logistic regression, generalized linear and tobit regression models were used to estimate the potential influencing factors on HRQoL., Results: This study (23 053 participants) included 2231 T2DM patients with a crude prevalence of 9.68%. The utility index and VAS-score in health group were 0.96 ± 0.10 and 78.85 ± 14.53, while in T2DM group were 0.93 ± 0.15 and 74.09 ± 16.09, respectively. In total, most diabetics reported problem about pain/discomfort dimension. Being old, poverty, low physical activity, and with comorbidities was negatively related to HRQoL of diabetics, while high educational level was positively related to HRQoL., Conclusion: HRQoL of rural T2DM patients depended on several sociodemographic factors. Background: The study aimed to investigate the independent and combined effects of midpoint of sleep and night sleep duration on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in areas with limited resources., Methods: A total of 37,276 participants (14,456 men and 22,820 women) were derived from the Henan Rural Cohort Study. Sleep information was assessed based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines were used to estimate the relationship of the midpoint of sleep and night sleep duration with T2DM., Results: Of the 37,276 included participants, 3580 subjects suffered from T2DM. The mean midpoint of sleep among the Early, Intermediate and Late groups were 1:05 AM ±23 min, 1:56 AM ±14 min, and 2:57 AM ±34 min, respectively. Compared to the Intermediate group, adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of T2DM were 1.13 (1.04-1.22) and 1.14 (1.03-1.26) in the Early group and the Late group. Adjusted OR (95% CI) for T2DM compared with the reference (7- h) was 1.28 (1.08-1.51) for longer (≥ 10 h) night sleep duration. The combination of late midpoint of sleep and night sleep duration (≥ 9 h) increased 38% (95% CI 10-74%) prevalence of T2DM. These associations were more obvious in women than men., Conclusions: Late and early midpoint of sleep and long night sleep duration were all associated with higher prevalence of T2DM. Meanwhile, midpoint of sleep and night sleep duration might have combined effects on the prevalence of T2DM, which provided potential health implications for T2DM prevention, especially in rural women., Trial Registration: The Henan Rural Cohort Study has been registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Register (Registration number: ChiCTR-OOC-15006699 ). Recent studies on whether dairy consumption is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have yielded inconsistent results, so we explored the relationship between dairy consumption and T2DM through a large-sample, cross-sectional study and a meta-analysis. In the meta-analysis, summary relative risks (RRs) of 23 articles were compiled with a random effects model, and a restricted cubic spline regression model was used to explore whether there is a nonlinear relationship between dairy intake and T2DM risk. This cross-sectional study used baseline data from 38,735 participants of the Henan Rural Cohort study and the association between dairy consumption and T2DM was analyzed by a logistic regression model. The meta-analysis revealed a borderline negative significant association between total dairy intake and risk of T2DM, the RR and 95% confidence interval (CI) was 0.94; (0.89, 1.00), and the risk was lowest at 270 g daily dairy intake. In the cross-sectional study, there were 3654 T2DM patients and 68.3 percent of the respondents had no dairy intake. The average intake of dairy in the total population was 12 g per day. Fully adjusted analyses suggested positive associations, with an odds ratio (OR) comparing the highest with the zero intake of 1.34 (95% CI: 1.22, 1.48) for all participants, which was unaffected by sex. Dairy intake in rural areas of Henan province is low, and we found, in the context of overall low dairy intake, that a high intake was positively associated with T2DM, which is inconsistent with the meta-analysis results suggesting that dairy has marginal protective effects against T2DM.

Purpose: Type 2 diabetes is a complex disease determined by variable genes and environmental factors. The study was designed to investigate the effect of interactions of four polymorphisms of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) with fruit and vegetable (F&V) intake on type 2 diabetes in a rural population of China., Methods: A total of 4411 participants from the rural areas of Henan, China were included in the study. Multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic splines were used to estimate the associations between polymorphisms and risk allele score of SOCS3 and type 2 diabetes in different groups. Haplotype analysis was conducted to examine the effects of linkage inheritance at these four loci on type 2 diabetes., Results: Three of the four polymorphisms showed significant associations with type 2 diabetes in the less F&V intake group after adjusting the covariates, the odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were 1.24 (1.08-1.41) for rs4969168, 1.16 (1.02-1.32) for rs9892622, and 1.21 (1.06-1.39) for rs9914220. No significant association was detected in the more F&V intake group. The obvious dose-response relationship between the risk allele score and type 2 diabetes was also noted only in the less F&V intake group., Conclusions: Variants of SOCS3 gene were associated with type 2 diabetes and the associations could be modified by the F&V intake.

Aims: This meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively examine the possible associations between total meat, red meat, processed meat, poultry and fish intakes and type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Methods: Relevant articles were identified in PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases using a search time up to January 2019. Generalized least-squares trend estimations and restricted cubic spline regression models were used for analysis., Results: Twenty-eight articles were included in the analysis. When comparing the highest with the lowest category of meat intake, the summary relative risk of T2D was 1.33 (95% CI: 1.16-1.52) for total meat, 1.22 (95% CI: 1.16-1.28) for red meat, 1.25 (95% CI: 1.13-1.37) for processed meat, 1.00 (95% CI: 0.93-1.07) for poultry and 1.01 (95% CI: 0.93-1.10) for fish. In the dose-response analysis, each additional 100g/day of total and red meat, and 50g/day of processed meat, were found to be associated with a 36% (95% CI: 1.23-1.49), 31% (95% CI: 1.19-1.45) and 46% (95% CI: 1.26-1.69) increased risk of T2D, respectively. In addition, there was evidence of a non-linear dose-response association between processed meat and T2D (P=0.004), with the risk increasing by 30% with increasing intakes up to 30g/day., Conclusion: Our meta-analysis has shown a linear dose-response relationship between total meat, red meat and processed meat intakes and T2D risk. Background and Aim: The present study was conducted to explore the stratified and joint effects of age at menopause and body mass index (BMI) with the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Chinese rural adults., Methods and Results: A total of 15,406 postmenopausal Chinese women were included in this study. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to quantify the stratified and joint effects of age at menopause and BMI on T2DM. Overall, the mean age at menopause and BMI was 48.8 ± 4.7 years and 25.1 ± 3.6 kg/m 2 , respectively. In general, data suggest that: 1) women with BMI ≥ 24 had a higher risk of T2DM, irrespective of age at menopause; 2) in women with BMI < 24, later menopause had a higher risk of T2DM (OR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.16-2.01); 3) the risk of T2DM was higher only in patients with early or normal age at menopause and BMI ≥ 24, with 0R (95% CI) of (1.58, 1.28-1.94) and (1.48, 1.31-1.67), respectively., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that: 1) women with BMI ≥ 24 had a higher risk of T2DM, irrespective of age at menopause; 2) in women with BMI < 24, a higher risk of T2DM was found only in those with later menopause; 3) women with later menopause had a higher risk of T2DM, irrespective of BMI; 4) in patients with early or normal age at menopause, a higher risk of T2DM was found only in patients with BMI ≥ 24., The Chinese Clinical Trial Registration: ChiCTR-OOC-1500669(URL:http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=11375)., (Copyright © 2020 The Italian Diabetes Society, the Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis, the Italian Society of Human Nutrition and the Department of Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Federico II University. Background and Aims: To assess the associations of sedentary time, suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)-3 DNA methylation with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and further identify the role of SOCS3 methylation in mediating the association of sedentary time with T2DM in a Chinese rural population., Methods and Results: A case-control study including 1032 participants from the Henan Rural Cohort study was conducted. Restricted cubic spline analysis and logistic regression model were performed to evaluate the associations between sedentary time, SOCS3 methylation and T2DM. The mediation effect of SOCS3 methylation on the association between sedentary time and T2DM was assessed. Sensitivity analysis was conducted by excluding individuals with diagnosed T2DM. Linear dose-response relationships were found between sedentary time, methylation level of Chr17:76356190 (one novel site on SOCS3) and T2DM. Compared with the first quartile (less than 5 h/d) of sedentary time, the adjusted odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence interval, 95%CI) for those in the third (7-10 h/d) and fourth (≥10 h/d) quartiles were 1.87 (1.22-2.85) and 3.54 (2.14-5.85), respectively. Participants in the fourth quartile of methylation level of Chr17:76356190 had lower risk of T2DM than those in the first quartile (OR (95%CI): 0.23 (0.14-0.38)). Mediation analysis showed 9.66% (6.38%-14.80%) of the association between sedentary time and T2DM was attributable to Chr17:76356190. The comparable effect estimates were observed between sedentary time, methylation level of Chr17:76356190 and undiagnosed T2DM., Conclusion: Sedentary time and methylation level of Chr17:76356190 were both independently associated with T2DM in the Chinese rural population. Purpose: The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of age at menarche (AM) on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and to assess whether the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA) index responses to AM and menopause status interact in Chinese rural adults., Methods: A cross-sectional, population-based study including 23 138 participants was performed. Logistic regression and multivariable linear regression were performed to investigate the relationship between AM and glucose status. Generalized linear model was used to calculate the interaction term of AM and menopause status on FPG and the HOMA index. Interaction plot was used to interpret the significant interaction effect., Results: Women in the later menarche age group (≥18 years) had a 17.7% lower risk of T2DM (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.712-0.951, P = .008), after adjusting for multiple variables. Further adjustment for body mass index (BMI) completely attenuated this association (odds ratio = 0.884, 95% CI: 0.764-1.024, P = .099). A significant interaction effect of AM and menopause status on T2DM (P = .004) was observed. The adverse effects of menopausal status on FPG and HOMA-2 of insulin resistance decreased with increasing menarche age, and the age ranges were limited to <18 and 9 to 19 years, respectively., Conclusions: Later menarche was associated with a lower risk of T2DM, and the association appears to be mediated by BMI. Background & Aims: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a complex metabolic disease with numerous risk factors, including a growing number of genetic susceptibility variants. The TCF7L2 gene is closely associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, but the association of TCF7L2 with weight-related traits in humans is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine if TCF7L2 variants and body mass index/waist circumference (BMI/WC) act synergistically to influence the incidence of type 2 diabetes in a Chinese population., Methods: This is a large sample, case-control study. We recruited 1842 Chinese type 2 diabetes patients and 7777 healthy controls and collected demographic and anthropometric characteristics and blood samples. We extracted DNA and genotyped the TCF7L2 single nucleotide polymorphisms rs7903146 and rs290487 in all participants., Results: There were significant linear interactions between rs7903146 and BMI/WC and elevated blood glucose (P < 0.001); rs290487 and BMI/WC also showed a linear interaction with blood glucose levels (P < 0.001). The interaction was stronger at higher BMI (>21.02) and higher WC (>66.77 cm). The additive interaction of rs 290487 and overweight/obesity variables yielded a significant increase in the risk for T2D. RERI (relative excess risk of interaction) was 2.949 (95%CI: 1.700-4.198), AP (attributable proportion due to interaction) was 0.391 (95%CI: 2.281-0.502), and SI (synergy index) was 1.822 (95%CI: 1.463-2.268). Additionally, there was a significant interaction between rs 290487 and abdominal obesity on the risk of T2D (RERI: 2.642, 95%CI: 1.384-3.900; AP: 0.350, 95%CI: 0.231-0.468; SI: 1.675, 95%CI: 1.348-2.083)., Conclusions: These results show that a TCF7L2 gene-BMI interaction or gene-WC interaction may play an important role in the risk for T2D in the Chinese population., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism. Introduction: Group-specific component (GC) and cytochrome P450 family 2 subfamily R member 1 (CYP2R1) gene polymorphisms and obesity have been associated with an increased risk for development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Asian populations., Objective: This study assessed the associations of interactions between GC gene variants and CYP2R1 gene variants and between genes and obesity with T2DM risk., Methods: A study that included 2,271 subjects was performed. Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms in the GC and CYP2R1 genes were genotyped. Interaction analysis was performed using rs7041 in the GC gene and rs1993116 in the CYP2R1 gene. The effects of multiplicative and additive gene-gene and gene-environment interactions on T2DM risk were assessed., Results: The T2DM risk was significantly associated with being overweight/obese, abdominal obesity, rs7041, and rs1993116. A significant additive interaction between rs1993116 and rs7041 was associated with T2DM. In addition, there was a significant multiplicative interaction between rs7041 and body mass index (BMI) associated with elevated blood glucose levels, and at a higher BMI (>28.47), the G allele carrier showed a stronger effect than the TT genotype., Conclusions: The interactions between GC rs7041-CYP2R1 rs1993116 and GC rs7041-BMI may explain the mechanisms by which these factors increase the risk of T2DM development., (© 2020 S. The relationship between dietary protein consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been inconsistent. The aim of this meta-analysis was to explore the relations between dietary protein consumption and the risk of T2D. We conducted systematic retrieval of prospective studies in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Summary relative risks were compiled with a fixed effects model or a random effects model, and a restricted cubic spline regression model and generalized least squares analysis were used to evaluate the diet-T2D incidence relationship. T2D risk increased with increasing consumption of total protein and animal protein, red meat, processed meat, milk, and eggs, respectively, while plant protein and yogurt had an inverse relationship. A non-linear association with the risk for T2D was found for the consumption of plant protein, processed meat, milk, yogurt, and soy. This meta-analysis suggests that substitution of plant protein and yogurt for animal protein, especially red meat and processed meat, can reduce the risk for T2D.

Objective: The aim of the study was to determine if early menarche is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in rural Chinese women and to estimate the proportion that can be attributed to adiposity., Methods: A total of 15,346 postmenopausal women were enrolled in this study. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline analysis were performed to estimate the relationship between age at menarche and T2DM. Mediation analysis was used to investigate whether the association was mediated by body mass index (BMI)., Results: After adjusting for multiple confounders, the early menarche group (≤14 y) had a higher risk of T2DM (odds ratio [OR] = 1.21; 95% CI = 1.06-1.38; P = 0.004) compared with the reference group (16-17 y), whereas the late onset group (≥19 y) had a lower risk of T2DM (OR = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.66-0.92; P = 0.003). BMI partially mediated the association between age at menarche and T2DM, and the proportion of the effect was 28%., Conclusions: Early menarche increases the risk of T2DM, whereas later menarche decreases the risk. The association seems to be partially mediated by BMI.

Objective: This study estimated the burden and characterised the risk factors associated with diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in an undiagnosed rural population., Design: Data for 36 960 participants from the Henan Rural Cohort baseline with undiagnosed diabetes were analysed. X 2 test and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to test for association between risk factors and diabetes and IFG., Results: Women constituted 60.30% of the study participants, mean age of participants was 55.32±12.18 years, risk factors for diabetes and IFG were prevalent (75% dyslipidaemia, 57% overweight/obese, 50% central obesity and 18% metabolic syndrome). The prevalence of diabetes and IFG was 4.19% and 7.22%, respectively. Having a metabolic syndrome (adjusted OR (aOR) 4.7, 95% CI 4.27 to 5.33), dyslipidaemia (aOR 2.76, 95% CI 2.31 to 3.21), centrally obese (aOR 2.38, 95% CI 2.11 to 2.70), being overweight/obese (aOR 1.66, 95% CI 1.45 to 1.79) and a family history of diabetes (aOR 1.50, 95% CI 1.15 to 1.92) were associated with diabetes. These factors were also associated with IFG. Intake of high salt diet (aOR 1.16, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.32) and smoking (aOR 1.22, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.47; significant in men) were also associated with diabetes. Engaging in moderate physical activity (aOR 0.94, 95% CI 0.89 to 0.98) was noted to be negatively associated with diabetes., Conclusion: Diabetes and IFG remain prevalent in Chinese population with obesity and dyslipidaemia being some of the most significant predictors. Aim: To assess the relationship between various obesity categories according to body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Chinese rural adults., Methods: A total of 38,466 eligible participants were derived from The Henan Rural Cohort Study. Structured questionnaires and anthropometric and laboratory measurements were undertaken. Logistic regression was performed by gender., Results: The age-standardized prevalence of T2DM in current study was 3.94% in men and 5.14% in women. Compared with participants with both normal BMI and WC, participants with normal BMI but high WC, high BMI but normal WC, or both high BMI and WC showed elevated risk of T2DM, in addition to being women with high BMI but normal WC. Moreover, when BMI and WC were included in the same multivariate adjusted model, both BMI and WC were significantly associated with increased T2DM risk in men, however, WC but not BMI remained positively associated with T2DM risk in women., Conclusions: In summary, gender-specific differences between obesity measures and T2DM were found. WC was independently associated with increased risk of T2DM regardless of BMI status in women, whereas both BMI and WC showed positive association with T2DM risk in men., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the GCKR and G6PC2 genes on risk for type 2 diabetes and the SNP-SNP and haplotype-based interactions between these genes., Methods: Subjects of this nested case-control study were selected from a prospective cohort residing in the rural area of Luoyang city in China. Cases (n = 538) were individually matched with controls. Six SNPs in the GCKR and G6PC2 genes were selected and genotyped using an SNPscan™ kit. Stratified Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to generate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for different genotype models for the risk of T2DM. Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) was used to analyze the interactions between two genes with among six SNPs. The linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis and the haplotype analysis were carried out by SHEsis online., Results: We found that the C allele of rs780094 was associated with increased risk for T2DM in Han Chinese population. However, the rs492594-C allele in G6PC2 was associated with a decreased risk of T2DM. We also found a significant SNP-SNP interaction between rs2293572 and rs492594, and the CCCCGC and CGCCCA haplotypes significantly increased the risk of T2DM, however, the CCCCCA haplotype had lower susceptibility to T2DM., Conclusion: The results suggest that the GCKR and G6PC2 genes may contribute to the risk of T2DM independently and/or in an interactive manner in the Han Chinese population.

Background: The prevalence of dyslipidemia continue to increase in recent decades in China, however, little is known about the recent prevalence, awareness, treatment, control, and potential risk factors of dyslipidemia in the rural areas of China., Methods: A total of 39,207 participants aged 18-79 years were recruited for the epidemiological research from the Henan Rural Cohort study. The age- and sex-adjusted means (95% confidence intervals, CI) of serum lipid levels or percentages of prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control overall and in various population subgroups were estimated and compared by multiple linear regression or logistic regression. The multivariable logistic regression model was used to explore the associations between the socio-demographic factors and the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of dyslipidemia., Results: The age- and sex-adjusted mean levels (95%CI) of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were 4.76(4.75-4.77), 1.68(1.67-1.69),1.33(1.32-1.33), and 2.87 (2.86-2.88) mmol/L, respectively. Overall, the age-standardized prevalence of dyslipidemia was 32.21% (42.85% in men vs. 26.16% in women) in Chinese rural adults, with 5.11, 16.00, 19.27, and 4.76% for high TC, high TG, low HDL-C and high LDL-C, respectively. The age-standardized awareness, treatment and control of dyslipidemia were 15.07, 7.23, and 3.25%, respectively, which were higher in women than men, and increased steeply with age (P trend  < 0.05). The proportion of prevalence, awareness, treatment, control of dyslipidemia differed significantly among various subpopulations while the awareness, treatment, and control rates were universally low in all subgroups (< 54, 36, and 15%, respectively). Increasing age, men, unhealthy lifestyles, positive family history of dyslipidemia, abnormal weight, type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension were independent risk factors of dyslipidemia., Conclusion: Dyslipidemia was common with unacceptably low awareness, treatment and control rates in rural China. Therefore, effective strategies are necessary for improving the status of the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, control of dyslipidemia in Chinese rural residents., Trial Registration: ChiCTR-OOC-15006699.

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the independent and combined dose-response association of napping and night sleep duration with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among different genders in the rural Chinese population., Methods: For this research, a total of 19,257 participants were enrolled in the Rural Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (RuralDiab) study. Napping and night sleep duration were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Restricted cubic splines and logistic regression were used to estimate the relationship between napping and night sleep duration with T2DM., Results: A linear dose-response relationship between napping duration and T2DM as well as a U-shaped relationship between night sleep duration and T2DM were found. Compared with those who reported no napping, participants who had a napping duration of ≥91 min were associated with a 19% increase in prevalence of T2DM. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals (CIs)) for T2DM were 1.48 (1.03, 2.14) and 1.50 (1.22, 1.85) for shorter (≤5 h) and longer (>9 h) night sleep duration compared with the referential group. Additionally, the combination of longer napping duration (≥91 min) and night sleep duration (>9 h) increased 104% (95% CI: 45%, 128%) prevalence for T2DM. These associations were not found in males but were evident in females., Conclusions: Longer napping duration and extreme night sleep duration increased the prevalence of T2DM. Aims: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate triglyceride level among Chinese elderly population with different diabetic progressions and related factors of triglyceride., Methods: Study participants (≥65years) were recruited from a nationwide cross-sectional surveillance and were divided into four subgroups according to diabetic progression. Their information was obtained via questionnaire and physical examination. Their lipids in fasting serum samples were analyzed., Results: The serum triglyceride levels (mmol/L, mean±SD) were 1.3±0.8 (subgroup of no prediabetes and no DM), 1.5±1.0 (subgroup of prediabetes), 1.6±1.1 (subgroup of newly diagnosed DM) and 1.7±1.1 (subgroup of previously diagnosed DM), respectively. Only one female participant had a higher triglyceride than upper limit for prevention of acute pancreatitis (11.0mmol/L). However, 23.1% of participants and 34.8% of DM participants had higher triglyceride than upper limit for prevention of cardiovascular diseases (1.7mmol/L). Triglyceride level was positively correlated with diabetic progression (r s =0.17, p<0.01). Age, gender, waist-to-height ratio (rather than BMI), systolic pressure, serum total cholesterol and HDL-C levels were statistically correlated with triglyceride level for total participants (R 2 =0.39, p<0.01)., Conclusions: Aggravation of serum triglyceride level was related to diabetic progression in Chinese elderly population. Objective: To collectively evaluate the association of glucose-6-phosphatase catalytic unit 2 (G6PC2) allele variants with elevated fasting glucose (FG) and type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Design: Meta-analysis., Data Sources: PubMed, Web of Knowledge and Embase databases., Study Selection: Full text articles of studies that identified an association of G6PC2 with T2D and elevated FG., Patient Involvement: There was no T2D patient involvement in the analyses on the association of FG with G6PC2, there were T2D patients and non-diabetes patient involvement in the analyses on the association of T2D with G6PC2., Statistical Analysis: Random-effects meta-analyses were used to calculate the pool effect sizes. I2 metric and H2 tests were used to calculate the heterogeneity. Begg's funnel plot and Egger's linear regression test were done to assess publication bias., Results: Of the 423 studies identified, 21 were eligible and included. Data on three loci (rs560887, rs16856187 and rs573225) were available. The G allele at rs560887 in three ethnicities, the C allele at rs16856187 and the A allele at rs573225 all had a positive association with elevated FG. Per increment of G allele at rs560887 and A allele at rs573225 resulted in a FG 0.070 mmol/l and 0.075 mmol/l higher (ß (95% CI) = 0.070 (0.060, 0.079), p = 4.635e-50 and 0.075 (0.065, 0.085), p = 5.856e-48, respectively). With regard to the relationship of rs16856187 and FG, an increase of 0.152 (95% CI: 0.034-0.270; p = 0.011) and 0.317 (95% CI: 0.193-0.442, p = 6.046e-07) was found in the standardized mean difference (SMD) of FG for the AC and CC genotypes, respectively, when compared with the AA reference genotype. However, the G-allele of rs560887 in Caucasians under the additive model and the C-allele of rs16856187 under the allele and dominant models were associated with a decreased risk of T2D (OR (95% CI) = 0.964 (0.947, 0.981), p = 0.570e-4; OR (95% CI) = 0.892 (0.832, 0.956), p = 0.001; and OR (95% CI) = 0.923(0.892, 0.955), p = 5.301e-6, respectively)., Conclusions: Our meta-analyses demonstrate that all three allele variants of G6PC2 (rs560887, rs16856187 and rs573225) are associated with elevated FG, with two variants (rs560887 in the Caucasians subgroup and rs16856187 under the allele and dominant model) being associated with T2D as well. Further studies utilizing larger sample sizes and different ethnic populations are needed to extend and confirm these findings.

The purpose was to explore the effects of resting heart rate (RHR) and pulse pressure (PP) independently as well as their cumulative effects on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) through cross-sectional study plus meta-analysis. A total of 8276 subjects aged 35-74 years from the Rural Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (RuralDiab) study were included in the study. Meanwhile, two meta-analyses were conducted to validate the results of the epidemiological research. The results showed that RHR and PP were associated with higher risk of T2DM, and the corresponding adjusted OR(95%CI) for each quartiles were 1.00, 0.99(0.68-1.42), 1.58(1.13-2.20), 2.93(2.15-3.98) and 1.00, 1.06(0.75-1.48), 1.11(0.79-1.56), 1.45(1.03-2.03), respectively. The cumulative effect analysis indicated that the adjusted OR(95%CI) in the fast RHR-high PP were 3.36(2.26-4.99), 2.60(1.47-4.59), and 3.60(2.09-6.20) compared with the slow RHR-low PP for total population, male and female, respectively. Meta-analysis showed that the pooled effect values for RHR and PP were 1.94(1.64-2.31) and 1.25(1.04-1.51), respectively. This study demonstrated that elevated RHR and PP are independently associated with the risk of T2DM as well as the influences of conventional confounders, and fast RHR with high PP might cumulatively increase the risk of T2DM. However, the potential clinical application remains to be determined.

Background: The consistency and strength of the relationship between napping duration and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remained uncertain, especially in the rural population. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between napping duration and T2DM in a Chinese rural population., Methods: A total of 12663 participants (4365 males and 8298 females) were derived from the RuralDiab study in China. Napping duration was obtained through a standardized questionnaire, and was divided into five categories: no napping (reference), 1∼, 31∼, 61∼, and ≥91 min. Fasting blood glucose was measured. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A meta-analysis including seven studies was conducted to validate the result of the RuralDiab study., Results: The crude and age-standardized prevalence of T2DM were 10.31% and 8.14%, respectively. Compared with no napping, the adjusted OR (95%CI) for napping duration ≥91 min was 1.23 (1.05-1.45). A similar relationship was found only in females aged 45-54 years, but not in males and other age group females. In addition, napping duration was associated with T2DM in a positive dose-dependent manner among females aged 45-54 years (P for trend <0.05). The meta-analysis demonstrated this association, and the pooled OR (95%CI) for the longest napping duration compared with no napping was 1.28 (1.22-1.35)., Conclusion: Longer napping duration is associated with higher risk of T2DM in the Chinese rural population, and this association varies across gender and age. The purpose of this study was to establish a simple and effective risk score for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in middle-aged rural Chinese. Total of 5453 participants aged 30-59 years from the Rural Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (RuralDiab) study were recruited for establishing the RuralDiab risk score by using logistic regression analysis. The RuralDiab risk score was validated in a prospective study from Henan Province of China, and compared with previous risk scores by using the receiver-operating characteristics cure. Ultimately, sex, age, family history of diabetes, physical activity, waist circumference, history of dyslipidemia, diastolic blood pressure, body mass index were included in the RuralDiab risk score (range from 0 to 36), and the optimal cutoff value was 17 with 67.9% sensitivity and 67.8% specificity. The area under the cures (AUC) of the RuralDiab risk score was 0.723(95%CI: 0.710-0.735) for T2DM in validation population, which was significant higher than the American Diabetes Association score (AUC: 0.636), the Inter99 score (AUC: 0.669), the Oman risk score (AUC: 0.675). The RuralDiab risk score was established and demonstrated an appropriate performance for predicting T2DM in middle-aged Chinese rural population. Further studies for validation should be implemented in different populations.

The aim of this study was to estimate the dynamics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prevalence and management rates based on a rural cohort study in Henan Province of China. The rural prospective study was conducted for 20194 Chinese population ≥18 years in 2007-2008 and followed during 2013-2014. A total of 14009 individuals were recruited for the prospective analysis ultimately. Over 5.74 years of follow-up, the age-standardized prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of T2DM increased from 6.18%, 44.41%, 34.39%, and 19.08% at baseline to 7.87%, 59.64%, 52.17%, and 26.52% at follow-up in total population, respectively. Similar changes were found in men and women except the age-standardized control in men. The four parameters of T2DM were higher among various factors at follow-up than those at baseline. There was no statistical difference in awareness ( P = 0.089) and treatment ( P = 0.257) in the newly diagnosed T2DM compared with the rates at baseline. The current study indicated that the prevalence, awareness, treatment, and control of T2DM displayed chronological increasing trends while the awareness, treatment, and control of T2DM were still disproportionally low in central China. The study aimed to investigate prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and to explore potential risk factors in rural areas of China. A total of 16413 individuals aged 18-74 years in rural districts were recruited from the Rural Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (RuralDiab) study for the epidemiological research. Meanwhile, a meta-analysis including 7 published studies was conducted to validate the result of the cross-sectional study. The rates of crude and age-standardized prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of T2DM were 12.19%, 67.00%, 62.35%, 22.20% and 6.98%, 60.11%, 54.85%, 18.77%, respectively. The prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of T2DM displayed increased trends with age (Ptrend < 0.01) and were strongly associated with education, drinking, more vegetable and fruit intake, physical activity, family history of diabetes, body mass index (BMI). The results of this meta-analysis showed that the pooled prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of T2DM in China countryside were 7.3% (5.3-9.4%), 57.3% (36.9-77.6%), 48.4% (32.4-64.5%) and 21.0% (9.9-32.1%), respectively. The prevalence of T2DM was high with inadequate awareness, treatment and control of T2DM in China rural areas. Healthy lifestyles should be advocated to reduce prevalence and improve awareness, treatment, and control of T2DM in Chinese rural residents.

Objective: Previous studies on the association between vitamin D binding protein (DBP) polymorphisms and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have produced conflicting results. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine whether DBP polymorphisms are associated with the risk of T2DM., Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis., Methods: All eligible studies were searched and acquired from the Cochrane, Pubmed, ISI, CNKI (Chinese) and Wanfang (Chinese) databases. ORs with corresponding 95% CIs were computed to estimate the association between DBP polymorphisms and T2DM. In addition, heterogeneity test, meta-regression and sensitivity analysis were also conducted., Results: Six studies, which included 1191 cases and 882 controls, met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that no significant associations were found between codon 416 and codon 420 polymorphisms in the DBP and the risk of T2DM in the overall analyses. In stratified analysis, significant associations between the codon 420 polymorphism and T2DM were found in Asians (allele Lys vs Thr: OR (95% CI) 1.49 (1.19 to 1.85), genotype Lys/Thr versus Thr/Thr: OR (95% CI) 1.80 (1.36 to 2.38), and Lys/Thr+Lys/Lys versus Thr/Thr: OR (95% CI) 1.81 (1.37 to 2.39), respectively) but not in Caucasians. For the codon 416, the significant association with T2DM was also detected in Asians (genotype Glu/Asp+Glu/Glu vs Asp/Asp: OR (95% CI) 1.36 (1.04 to 1.78)) but not in Caucasians., Conclusions: This meta-analysis demonstrated that the DBP polymorphism was moderately associated with increased susceptibility to T2DM in Asians, but a similar association was not found in Caucasians.
