Low-temperature detectors often use mechanical coolers as part of the cooling chain in order to reach sub-Kelvin operating temperatures. The microphonic noise caused by the mechanical coolers is a general and inherent issue for these detectors. We have observed this effect in the ground test data obtained with the Resolve instrument to be flown on the XRISM satellite. Resolve is a cryogenic X-ray microcalorimeter spectrometer with a required energy resolution of 7 eV at 6 keV. Five mechanical coolers are used to cool from ambient temperature to ∼ 4 K: four two-stage Stirling coolers (STC) driven nominally at 15 Hz and a Joule–Thomson cooler (JTC) driven nominally at 52 Hz. In 2019, we operated the flight-model instrument for two weeks, in which we also obtained accelerometer data inside the cryostat at a low-temperature stage (He tank). X-ray detector and accelerometer data were obtained continuously while changing the JTC drive frequency, which produced a unique data set for investigating how the vibration from the cryocoolers propagates to the detector. In the detector noise spectra, we observed harmonics of both STCs and JTC. More interestingly, we also observed the low ( < 20 Hz) frequency beat between the 4th JTC and 14th STC harmonics and the 7th JTC and the 23–24th STC harmonics. In many superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters, the measured electrical noise exceeds theoretical estimates based on a thermal model of a single body thermally connected to a heat bath. Here, we report on noise and complex impedance measurements of a range of designs of TESs made with a Mo/Au bilayer. We have fitted the measured data using a two-body model, where the x-ray absorber and the TES are connected by an internal thermal conductance Gae. We find that the so-called excess noise measured in these devices is consistent with the noise generated from the internal thermal fluctuations between the x-ray absorber and the TES. Our fitted parameters are consistent with the origin of Gae being from the finite thermal conductance of the TES itself. These results suggest that even in these relatively low resistance Mo/Au TESs, the internal thermal conductance of the TES may add significant additional noise and could account for all the measured excess noise. Furthermore, we find that around regions of the superconducting transition with rapidly changing derivative of resistance with respect to temperature, an additional noise mechanism may dominate. These observations may lead to a greater understanding of TES devices and allow the design of TES microcalorimeters with improved performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We are developing transition-edge sensor microcalorimeters for the X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU) on-board ESA's Athena space telescope. These detectors will be read out using time-domain multiplexing. Due to the limitations on bandwidth and dynamic range of the readout, the optimally filtered pulse heights of the measured X-ray signals suffer from a nonlinear variation with the exact photon arrival time relative to the sampling points. The shape and magnitude of this variation depend on the photon energy. We describe a method to characterize this energy-dependent variation with few parameters, which can then be interpolated to correct event energies across the whole spectrum. We implement our method on measurements from 200 pixels in a prototype X-IFU kilo-pixel array readout using 8-column × 32-row TDM. We show that the interpolation errors between calibration points, over the energy range 4–12 keV, can be made sufficiently small that they do not adversely impact the measured energy resolution across the full spectral range. We are developing lab-based readout electronics for Transition-edge sensors (TES) using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. These COTS modules are advantageous since they increase development speed and keep the cost low. We have developed these electronics to support both non-multiplexed and time-division multiplexing (TDM) readout systems. The system utilizes remote control via Ethernet, and the interface allows many types of measurements to be automated. With the TDM readout system, we have achieved 2.05 eV at 6 keV, 2.1 eV at 7 keV, 2.3 eV at 8 keV, and 2.8 eV at 12 keV with 2-column × 32-row multiplexing. We will be using this system in the characterization of detectors for the X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument on Athena. The measured noise in Mo/Au transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters produced at NASA has recently been shown to be well described by a two-body electro-thermal model with a finite thermal conductance between the X-ray absorber and the TES. In this article, we present observations of a high-frequency peak in the measured current noise in some of these devices. The peak is associated with an oscillatory component of the TES response that is not predicted in a single-body model but can be qualitatively described by the two-body model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report on X-ray transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters optimized to have the best possible energy resolution for a limited energy range for the incoming X-rays, such as an energy resolution of 0.3 eV full width half maximum (FWHM) for energies up to ≈ 0.8 keV as is desirable for one of the Lynx X-ray Microcalorimeter subarrays. The test array we have fabricated has 60 × 60 sensors on a pitch of 50 μ m , and has 46 × 46 μ m 2 absorbers that are one micrometer thick. We have measured a spectral energy resolution of the same device using 3 eV photons delivered through an optical fiber. For the one-photon 3 eV line, we have obtained an energy resolution of 0.25 eV FWHM, which is consistent with the estimated performance based on the signal size and noise. Further measurements will determine how the energy resolution degrades with energy. Based upon measurements of the TES transition characteristics, it appears that this level of energy resolution should be achievable up to 0.5 keV, and the performance will then gradually degrade to the measured energy resolution of around 2.3 eV at 1.5 keV. We report on the development of multi-absorber transition-edge sensors (TESs), referred to as 'hydras'. A hydra consists of multiple X-ray absorbers each with a different thermal conductance to a TES. Position information is encoded in the pulse shape. With some trade-off in performance, hydras enable very large format arrays without the prohibitive increase in bias and readout components associated with arrays of individual TESs. Hydras are under development for the next generation of space telescope such as Lynx. Lynx is a NASA concept under study that will combine a < 1″ angular resolution optic with 100,000-pixel microcalorimeter array with energy resolution of ΔEFWHM ~ 3 eV in the soft X-ray energy range. We present first results from hydras with 25-pixels for Lynx. Designs with absorbers on a 25 μm and 50 μm pitch are studied. Arrays incorporate, for the first time, microstrip buried wiring layers of suitable pitch and density required to readout a full-scale Lynx array. The resolution from the coadded energy histogram including all 25-pixels was ΔEFWHM = 1.66 ± 0.02 eV and 3.34 ± 0.06 eV at an energy of 1.5 keV for the 25 μm and 50 μm absorber designs, respectively. An x-ray microcalorimeter consists of an absorber and a thermometer connected to each other, and to a heat sink, via well defined thermal conductances. The standard theoretical derivation of energy resolution treats the absorber and thermometer as point elements that are internally isothermal. In reality, the finite size and internal diffusivity of the absorber and thermometer prevents these elements from instantly achieving a uniform temperature, leading to a variation in observed pulse shapes as a function of the interaction’s position within the absorber. These variations result in a distortion of the detector response and a subsequent degradation of the energy resolution. This paper presents diffusivity measurements for x-ray microcalorimeters fabricated at the NASA/GSFC. Using a diffusion model we developed, we show quantitatively how a 2 eV Gaussian response is distorted into a non-Gaussian profile roughly 12 eV wide at an energy of 6 keV for an absorber diffusivity of 104 μm2/μs. We then present a method for eliminating the effect of pulse shape variation on the detector energy response with a modified optimal filter approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The application of Calorimetric Low-Temperature Detectors (CLTDs) has been proposed at the Heavy-Ion TRAP facility HITRAP which is currently being installed at the Helmholtz Research Center for Heavy Ion Research GSI. This cold ion trap setup will allow the investigation of X-rays from ions practically at rest, for which the excellent energy resolution of CLTDs can be used to its full advantage. However, the relatively low intensities at HITRAP demand larger solid angles and an optimized cryogenic setup. The influence of external magnetic fields has to be taken into account. CLTDs will also be a substantial part of the instrumental equipment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Heavy Ion Research (FAIR), for which a wide variety of high-precision X-ray spectroscopy experiments has been proposed. This contribution will give an overview on the chances and challenges for the application of CLTDs at HITRAP as well as perspectives for future experiments at the FAIR facility. The international project MARE (Microcalorimeter Array for a Rhenium Experiment) aims at the direct and calorimetric measurement of the electron neutrino mass with sub-eV sensitivity. Although the baseline of the MARE project consists in a large array of rhenium based thermal detectors, a different option for the isotope is also being considered. The different option is Ho. The potential of using Re for a calorimetric neutrino mass experiment has been already demonstrated. On the contrary, no calorimetric spectrum of Ho has been so far measured with the precision required to set a useful limit on the neutrino mass. The first phase of the project (MARE-1) is a collection of activities with the aim of sorting out both the best isotope and the most suited detector technology to be used for the final experiment. One of the MARE-1 activities is carried out in Milan by the group of Milano-Bicocca in collaboration with NASA/GSFC and Wisconsin groups. The Milan MARE-1 arrays are based on semiconductor thermistors, provided by the NASA/GSFC group, with dielectric silver perrhenate absorbers, AgReO. The experiment, which is presently being assembled, is designed to host up to 8 arrays. With 288 detectors, a sensitivity of 3 eV at 90% CL on the neutrino mass can be reached within 3 years. This contribution gives an outlook for the MARE activities for the active isotope selection. In this contribution the status and the perspectives of the MARE-1 in Milan are also reported. We report the design and the performance of the engineering model of the digital signal processing system called the Pulse Shape Processor (PSP) for the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the ASTRO-H satellite. The SXS employs an X-ray microcalorimeter system, in which X-ray photons are detected as a heat pulse due to photoelectric absorption. The pixelized HgTe absorbers are cooled down to 50 mK. The required energy resolution is 7 eV (FWHM) at 6 keV. Since the data link to the satellite data recorder is limited to 200 kbit s^-1, the onboard digital processor PSP plays a critical role in achieving the required resolution. The PSP is also the rate-limiting factor for other performance of the SXS, such as maximum count rate and energy range. In this paper, we show the design of the PSP, and show the performance based on a series of laboratory tests performed with the engineering models of the detector and the analog readout electronics. We found that (1) the PSP can register energy in the 0.07–18 keV band [energy range], (2) the energy resolution of the engineering model system, including the detector, analog electronics, and the PSP, is 4.8–5.7 eV at 5.9 keV [energy resolution], and (3) the PSP has sufficient processing power to handle a point-like source fainter than 0.3 Crab [maximum count rate]. These results are expected to be quite similar to those with the flight model, thus the results will be useful for the observation planning using the SXS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SRON is developing Frequency Domain Multiplexing (FDM) for the read-out of transition edge sensor (TES) soft x-ray microcalorimeters for the XMS instrument of the International X-ray Observatory and far-infrared bolometers for the SAFARI instrument on the Japanese mission SPICA. In FDM the TESs are AC voltage biased at frequencies from 0.5 to 6 MHz in a superconducting LC resonant circuit and the signal is read-out by low noise and high dynamic range SQUIDs amplifiers. The TES works as an amplitude modulator. We report on several AC bias experiments performed on different detectors. In particular, we discuss the results on the characterization of Goddard Space Flight Center x-ray pixels and SRON bolometers. The paper focuses on the analysis of different read-out configurations developed to optimize the noise and the impedance matching between the detectors and the SQUID amplifier. A novel feedback network electronics has been developed to keep the SQUID in flux locked loop, when coupled to superconducting high Q circuits, and to optimally tune the resonant bias circuit. In a large close-packed array of x-ray microcalorimeters, sufficient heat sinking is important to minimize thermal crosstalk between pixels and to make the bath temperature of all the pixels uniform. We have measured crosstalk in our 8 x 8 pixel arrays. The shapes of the thermal crosstalk pulses are reproduced well as a convolution of heat input from the source pixel and the thermal decay in the receiver pixel. The amount of the thermal crosstalk is clearly dependent on the degree of electrothermal feedback. We have compared the magnitude of thermal crosstalk with and without a heat-sinking copper layer on the backside of the silicon frame as a function of distance between the source and receiver pixels. Using the results obtained, we have estimated the degradation of energy resolution that is expected as a function of count rate. We have also studied the temperature distribution within an array due to continuous heating from the TES bias to estimate impacts on the uniformity of the pixel performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Micro-X is a sounding-rocket experiment that will combine a transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter array with an imaging mirror to obtain high-spectral-resolution images of astronomical X-ray sources. The instrument's resolution across the 0.3-2.5 keV band will be 2 eV. The first flight will target the region of the Bright Eastern Knot of the Puppis A supernova remnant and is slated for January 2011. The obtained high-resolution X-ray spectra will be used to ascertain the temperature and ionization state of the X-ray-emitting gas and to determine its velocity structure. The TES array is read out bya time-division superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) multiplexing system. The detector front end assembly and the SQUID multiplexing circuit are cooled to the operating temperature of 50 mK with an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR). The design of this refrigerator is tailored to the requirements of rocket flight. Stable operation of the TES array close to the ADR magnet will be achieved with a magnetic shielding system, which will be based on a combination of a bucking coil and high-permeability and superconducting shield materials to cancel out residual fields. The calibration of the soft x-ray spectral response of a large radius of curvature, high resolution grating spectrometer (HRGS) with a back-illuminated charge-coupled device detector is reported. The instrument is cross-calibrated for the 10-50 Å waveband at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory electron beam ion trap (EBIT) x-ray source with the EBIT calorimeter spectrometer. The HRGS instrument is designed for laser-produced plasma experiments and is important for making high dynamic range measurements of line intensities, line shapes, and x-ray sources.
