Abstract: The setting up of the ARGO detector at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China) has been completed during the last spring (2007). It consists of a central carpet made of 130 identical sub-units of 12 RPCs each (a "cluster"), covering a surface of about 5800 m2 with 93% active area, and a guard ring of 24 further clusters of the same type surrounding the central carpet with a lower sampling density. Signals are picked up by external electrodes of small size, thus allowing the sampling of EAS with high space-time granularity. Shower events are detected at a trigger rate of about 4 kHz. Events with a few particles detected by a single cluster are counted in scaler mode on a time base of 500 ms. The intrinsic modularity of the ARGO detector allowed us to collect data even during the setting-up period, using only the central carpet (or even part of it). Some preliminary results from the analysis of events collected in a few months of data taking are presented. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Following the completion of the 5700m 2 RPC carpet-like AS array at YangBaJing this year, a further plan based on the ARGO Carpet is raised. It characterizes with its high altitude site, its full-coverage detector array and the multi-parameter measurements. Apart from studies on TeV and sub-TeV energy range, UHE Gamma-ray sources and the Knee Physics will become its characteristic subjects. In the first phase of the plan, the Yangbajing Super Complex Array (YSCA) will include a 10 4 m 2 RPC Carpet, five indoor μ -detectors (∼170 m 2 each), four big outdoor μ -detectors (∼432 m 2 each) and a traditional field scintillation detector array surrounding the Carpet. Monte-Carlo study shows that, with such an array in YBJ (4300m a.s.l.), γ -ray induced air showers can be separated from proton induced air showers clearly using only the observed electron and μ data event by event. To assist the classification of UHE air showers induced by different primary nuclei groups without severe interference by Composition/Model Entanglement, a second phase plan having a Central Burst Detector Array (CBDA) and some pulse shape detectors is schemed.

(lat=30.11° N, long=90.53° E). Using the data collected with a carpet of RPCs (1900 m 2 , about 1/3 of the whole ARGO-YBJ detector), the cosmic ray shadowing effect due to the Moon was studied. The 50% angular resolution is found to be ∼1.2° with the Chess-board method and the Moon shadow with a significance of 4.9 σ is found displaced by 0.7° westward and 0.5° northward with respect to the expected position by the equi-zenith angle Method.

Abstract: We report on the search for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range 1-100 GeV in coincidence with the prompt emission detected by satellites using the Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing (ARGO-YBJ) air shower detector. Thanks to its mountain location (Yangbajing, Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.), active surface (about 6700 m**2 of Resistive Plate Chambers), and large field of view (about 2 sr, limited only by the atmospheric absorption), the ARGO-YBJ air shower detector is particularly suitable for the detection of unpredictable and short duration events such as GRBs. The search is carried out using the "single particle technique", i.e. counting all the particles hitting the detector without measurement of the energy and arrival direction of the primary gamma rays. Between 2004 December 17 and 2009 April 7, 81 GRBs detected by satellites occurred within the field of view of ARGO-YBJ (zenith angle < 45 deg). It was possible to examine 62 of these for >1 GeV counterpart in the ARGO-YBJ data finding no statistically significant emission. With a lack of detected spectra in this energy range fluence upper limits are profitable, especially when the redshift is known and the correction for the extragalactic absorption can be considered. The obtained fluence upper limits reach values as low as 10**{-5} erg cm**{-2} in the 1-100 GeV energy region. Besides this individual search for a higher energy counterpart, a statistical study of the stack of all the GRBs both in time and in phase was made, looking for a common feature in the GRB high energy emission. Abstract: We report the observation of TeV gamma-rays from the Cygnus region using the ARGO-YBJ data collected from 2007 November to 2011 August. Several TeV sources are located in this region including the two bright extended MGRO J2019+37 and MGRO J2031+41. According to the Milagro data set, at 20 TeV MGRO J2019+37 is the most significant source apart from the Crab Nebula. No signal from MGRO J2019+37 is detected by the ARGO-YBJ experiment, and the derived flux upper limits at 90% confidence level for all the events above 600 GeV with medium energy of 3 TeV are lower than the Milagro flux, implying that the source might be variable and hard to be identified as a pulsar wind nebula. The only statistically significant (6.4 standard deviations) gamma-ray signal is found from MGRO J2031+41, with a flux consistent with the measurement by Milagro., 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ experiment detects extensive air showers in a wide energy range by means of a full-coverage detector which is in stable data taking in its full configuration since November 2007 at the YBJ International Cosmic Ray Observatory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, People's Republic of China). In this paper the measurement of the light-component spectrum of primary cosmic rays in the energy region $(5\textdiv{}200)\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ is reported. The method exploited to analyze the experimental data is based on a Bayesian procedure. The measured intensities of the light component are consistent with the recent CREAM results and higher than that obtained adding the proton and helium spectra reported by the RUNJOB experiment.

Abstract: Cosmic rays are hampered by the Moon and a deficit in its direction is expected (the so-called Moon shadow). The Moon shadow is an important tool to determine the performance of an air shower array. Indeed, the westward displacement of the shadow center, due to the bending effect of the geomagnetic field on the propagation of cosmic rays, allows the setting of the absolute rigidity scale of the primary particles inducing the showers recorded by the detector. In addition, the shape of the shadow permits to determine the detector point spread function, while the position of the deficit at high energies allows the evaluation of its absolute pointing accuracy. In this paper we present the observation of the cosmic ray Moon shadowing effect carried out by the ARGO-YBJ experiment in the multi-TeV energy region with high statistical significance (55 standard deviations). By means of an accurate Monte Carlo simulation of the cosmic rays propagation in the Earth-Moon system, we have studied separately the effect of the geomagnetic field and of the detector point spread function on the observed shadow. The angular resolution as a function of the particle multiplicity and the pointing accuracy have been obtained. The primary energy of detected showers has been estimated by measuring the westward displacement as a function of the particle multiplicity, thus calibrating the relation between shower size and cosmic ray energy. The stability of the detector on a monthly basis has been checked by monitoring the position and the deficit of the Moon shadow. Finally, we have studied with high statistical accuracy the shadowing effect in the day/’’night’’ time looking for possible effect induced by the solar wind.

Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ array for EAS detection at high altitude (4300 m a.s.l.) is the largest RPC-based detector in operation at present (active area of 6700 m 2 out of a total instrumented surface of about 10 4 m 2 ). The constant monitoring of the main operational and environmental parameters is essential for both keeping the detector status under control and understanding the detector behaviour more deeply. Exploiting the information provided by the ARGO-YBJ Detector Control System, the present status of the detector is described and some correlations between the environmental and the operational parameters of the ARGO-YBJ RPCs are shown. This study was performed using the monitored data from the complete ARGO-YBJ array which has been in operation since October 2007. Preliminary results on the observations of the Moon shadow and of γ -ray point sources are also presented.

Abstract: The proton-air cross section in the energy range 1-100 TeV has been measured by the ARGO-YBJ cosmic ray experiment. The analysis is based on the flux attenuation for different atmospheric depths (i.e. zenith angles) and exploits the detector capabilities of selecting the shower development stage by means of hit multiplicity, density and lateral profile measurements at ground. The effects of shower fluctuations, the contribution of heavier primaries and the uncertainties of the hadronic interaction models, have been taken into account. The results have been used to estimate the total proton-proton cross section at center of mass energies between 70 and 500 GeV, where no accelerator data are currently available., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: In ground-based cosmic ray experiments, the equalization of the transit time of signals coming from different parts of the apparatus is of crucial importance for the improvement of the angular resolution and accuracy. In the ARGO-YBJ experiment, this is achieved using the Characteristic Plane Method with conical correction, studied by both Monte Carlo simulation and real data and also checked with manual absolute calibration on a portion of the detector. By introducing conical correction in primary direction reconstruction, the systematics error existing in the off-line calibration with planar fit is successfully removed. Two subsequent construction phases of the detector have been considered: ARGO-42 and ARGO-104. During the calibration of ARGO-104, events with more than 1000 hits and with the core reconstructed inside the carpet were used in order to achieve a good reconstruction of the shower, that is the arrival direction and the core position. The results of the calibration concerning the two configurations, ARGO-42 and ARGO-104, are compared and discussed.

Abstract: Within a Collaboration Agreement between INFN and CAS (Chinese Academy of Science), the ARGO-YBJ experiment is completely installed at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China). ARGO-YBJ is a plane detector, with a total detection area of ∼ 6500 m 2 , made of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) which provide a detailed space-time picture of the charged component of the extensive air showers. At present the detector is completely mounted and the central carpet of 5800 m 2 is operating under a multiplicity trigger N p a d ⩾ 20 , the trigger rate is about 3.5kHz and the data flow is 5MB/s. A 0.5 cm lead converter will be mounted on the detector in summer 2007.

Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ experiment is a large area full coverage detector operating at high mountain altitude (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, China, ∼6700 m2 active surface). In scaler mode, the particle rate is recorded at fixed time intervals (0.5 s), allowing the achievement of an energy threshold as low as E t h ∼ 1 GeV for the photons. This result, together with the estimate of the effective area as a function of the primary energy, has been obtained using the simulation code CORSIKA6201 for the shower development in the atmosphere and a dedicated and detailed detector simulation, ARGOG, based on GEANT3.21. With this simulation chain, and using the known primary proton and helium spectra, we obtained counting rates consistent with the measured ones, making us confident in the expectation of the detector performance as far as the photon shower detection is concerned, which is of crucial importance to determine the capability of the ARGO-YBJ experiment to detect gamma-ray bursts (GRBs).

Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ detector is an extensive air shower array consisting of a carpet of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs). Very high energy (VHE) gamma ray astronomy is the main scientific goal of this Chinese-Italian experiment. High altitude and full coverage ensure a low energy threshold (few hundreds of GeV for primary photons), high duty-cycle and large field of view allow a continuous sky survey in the declination range from −10° to +70°. Also many features of the high energy cosmic rays are studied by ARGO-YBJ exploiting the unprecented shower reconstruction.

Abstract: In this paper we report on the observations of TeV gamma ray sources performed by the air shower de- tector ARGO-YBJ. The objects studied in this work are the blazar Markarian 421 and the extended galactic source MGROJ1908+06, monitored during 2 years of operation. Mrk421 has been detected by ARGO-YBJ with a statisti- cal significance of 11 standard deviations. The observed TeV emission was highly variable, showing large enhance- ments of the flux during active periods. The study of the spectral behaviour during flares revealed a positive correla- tion of the hardness with the flux, as already reported in the past by the Whipple telescope, suggesting that this is a long term property of the source. ARGO-YBJ observed a strong correlation between TeV gamma rays and the X-ray flux measured by RXTM/ASM and SWIFT/BAT during the whole period, with a time lag compatible with zero, supporting the one-zone SSC model to describe the emission mechanism. MGROJ1908+06 has been detected by ARGO-YBJ with 5 standard deviation of significance. From our data the source appears extended and the measured extension is ext=0.48 +0.26 0.28 , in agreement with a previous HESS obser- vation. The average flux is in marginal agreement with that reported by MILAGRO, but significantly higher than that ob- tained by HESS, suggesting a possible flux variability. The large field of view ( 2 sr) and the high duty cycle allow a continuous monitoring of the sky in the declination band from 0 to 70 . In this paper we report on the ob- servations of two bright gamma ray sources, performed dur- ing 2 years: the blazar Mrk421 and the extended galactic source MGROJ1908+06.

Abstract: ""ARGO-YBJ is an extensive air shower detector located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 ma.s.l., 606 g cm^−2 atmospheric depth, Tibet, China).. It is made by a single layer of Resistive Plate Chambers. (RPCs, total surface ~ 6700 m^2) grouped into 153 units. called “clusters”. The low energy threshold of the experiment is obtained using the ”scaler operation mode”, counting all the particles hitting the detector without reconstruction of the shower size and arrival direction. For each cluster the signals generated by these particles are put in coincidence in a narrow time window (150 ns) and read by four independent. scaler channels, giving the counting rates of channel. >= 1, >= 2, >= 3 and >= 4 hits. The study of these counting. rates pointed out a different behavior of channel >= 1. respect to the higher multiplicity channels: while the MC simulations can account fairly well for the coincident counting. rates, the expectation for channel >= 1 is sensibly less. than the measured value. Moreover, the regression coefficient with the atmospheric pressure for channel >= 1 is also. about half of the value measured for the coincident counting rates: seemingly half of these counts did not cross the atmosphere. Measurements of the natural radioactivity background. in the air of the detector hall and a MC simulation to. estimate its contribution on our counting rates are presented and discussed.""

Abstract: Gamma ray source detection above 30 TeV is an encouraging approach for finding galactic cosmic ray origins. All sky survey for gamma ray sources using wide field of view detector is essential for population accumulation for various types of sources above 100 GeV. To target the goals, the ARGO-YBJ experiment has been established. Significant progresses have been made in the experiment. A large air shower detector array in an area of 1 km2 is proposed to boost the sensitivity. Hybrid detections with multi-techniques will allow a good discrimination between different types of primary particles, including photons and protons, thus enable an energy spectrum measurement for individual species. Fluorescence light detector array will extend the spectrum measurement to 100 PeV and higher where the second knee is located. An energy scale determined by balloon experiments at 10 TeV will be propagated to ultra high energy cosmic ray experiments.

It exploits a full coverage and high altitude approach to the. small air showers detection. The detector is made of a single layer of RPCs operated in streamer mode, fully. instrumenting a central carpet of about 5700 m2, then a guard ring extends the partially instrumented area to. about 11,000 m2. The large field of view (∼ 2 sr) and the high duty cycle (≥ 85%) allow a continuous monitoring. of the sky in the declination band from -10. ◦. to 70. ◦. ; the detector operates with an energy threshold of a few. hundred GeV. Abstract: Detecting and monitoring emissions from flaring gamma-ray sources in the very-high-energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) band is a very important topic in gamma-ray astronomy. The ARGO-YBJ detector is characterized by a high duty cycle and a wide field of view. Therefore, it is particularly capable of detecting flares from extragalactic objects. Based on fast reconstruction and analysis, real-time monitoring of 33 selected VHE extragalactic sources is implemented. Flares exceeding a specific threshold are reported timely, hence enabling the follow-up observation of these objects using more sensitive detectors, such as Cherenkov telescopes. Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ experiment is an Extensive Air Shower (EAS) array which combines high altitude location and full coverage active area in order to reach low energy threshold at a level of few hundred of GeV. The large field of view (≈ 2 sr ) and the high duty cycle (≥ 90%) allow the continuous monitoring of the sky searching for unknown sources and unpredictable events, such as flares in blazar emissions and high energy Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). In this paper I will briefly report on the detector performance and on some preliminary results achieved in γ-ray astronomy.

In this paper I will present some results obtained in γ-ray astronomy with the ARGO-YBJ experiment.

Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ experiment is designed for the detection of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) in the primary energy range 100 GeV–10 TeV. Its full-coverage feature allows to lower the energy threshold about one order of magnitude with respect to sampling EAS detectors. Here the performance of the RPC array is described and the current status of the experiment is presented.

Abstract: The ARGO-YBJ experiment is almost completely installed at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, P.R. China). The lower energy limit of the detector (E $\sim$ 1 GeV) is reached with the scaler mode, i.e., recording the single particle rate at fixed time intervals. In this technique, due to its high altitude location and large area ($\sim$ 6700 m$^2$), this experiment is the most sensitive among all present and past ground-based detectors. In the energy range under investigation, signals due to local (e.g. solar GLEs) and cosmological (e.g. GRBs) phenomena are expected as significant enhancements of the counting rate over the background. Abstract: The layout of the RPCs, used in the Argo-YBJ experiment to image with a high space-time granularity the atmospheric shower, is described in this paper. The detector has been assembled to provide both digital and analog informations in order to cover a wide particle density range with a time accuracy of 1 ns. Abstract: ""The ARGO-YBJ experiment at YangBaJing in Tibet (4300m a.s.l.) has been taking data with its full layout since October 2007. Here we present a few significant results obtained in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of gamma-ray emission from point-like sources (Crab Nebula, MRK 421), on the preliminary limit on the antiproton\\\/proton flux ratio, on the large-scale cosmic-ray anisotropy and on the proton-air cross-section. The performance of the detector is also discussed, and the perspectives of the experiment are outlined.""
