Introduction: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection poses a significant threat to the immune system, compromising the body's ability to combat diseases and infections. The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia reported an HIV incidence rate of 3 cases per 10,000 individuals. This study aimed to gain insight into the lived experience of Saudi patients living with HIV. Methods: Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 16 HIV patients (10 men, 6 women) between January 2023 and May 2023. Results: Thematic data analysis highlighted three overarching themes and four subthemes. "Fear of the Future" encompassed subthemes including the fear of infecting a family member, fear of marriage, fear of employment recruitment, and fear of scandals. "Hopelessness" reflected the profound emotional state experienced by patients. "Overcoming Adversity" captured the resilience and strength demonstrated by individuals facing the challenges of living with HIV. Conclusion: Saudi patients diagnosed with HIV encounter numerous obstacles in their daily lives. The fear of the future, including concerns such as infecting family members, marriage prospects, employment opportunities, and potential social repercussions, significantly impacts their overall well-being. By understanding the lived experience of HIV patients in Saudi Arabia, healthcare providers and policymakers can better support and enhance the quality of life for this population. It is well established that COVID-19 pandemic is associated with arousal of feelings of hopelessness and negativity in adolescents regarding future career development outcomes. However, the current literature has yet to clarify the roles teacher social support play in facilitating students' positive career development during the pandemic. This study investigated the effects of career-related teacher support (CRTS) on ameliorating students' feelings of hopelessness and increasing their career self-efficacy among 402 senior secondary students (Grades 10-12) in Hong Kong, China. Results from mediated moderation analyses showed that academic ability was only weakly related to career self-efficacy. Background: A growing body of literature focuses on the role of benevolent childhood experiences (BCEs) in predicting adulthood well-being, in addition to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, cross-cultural differences are generally ignored in this endeavor. Hence, this study aimed to explore the role of BCEs in predicting life satisfaction, resilience, and hopelessness. We also examined the potential of resilience and the role of hopelessness in mediating the relationship between BCE and life satisfaction. Methods: A total of 850 university students from Turkey (n = 371), Portugal (n = 248), and India (n = 231), aged 17 to 58 years (M = 22.12, SD = 4.41), participated in the study. Participants completed an online protocol consisting of measures to assess BCEs, life satisfaction, resilience, and hopelessness. Results: BCEs, hopelessness, and life satisfaction have significantly differed among the samples based on the country of residence. BCEs were positively correlated to resilience and life satisfaction and negatively to hopelessness. In the sequential mediation model, after controlling for country and sex, resilience and hopelessness sequentially mediated the relationship between BCEs and life satisfaction. BCEs were associated with life satisfaction, resilience, and hopelessness across countries and sexes. The model explains 42.8% of the variability. Conclusion: Despite differences between countries, BCEs are important predictors of adult well-being in all three countries and should be monitored along with ACE. Further, resilience seems to have an important role in lowering the negative consequences of lower BCEs and feelings of hopelessness, pointing to the need to strengthen psychological resilience among adults. Associations between comorbid depression and grief with suicidal ideation (SI) have been inconsistent. To identify at-risk individuals, it is important to determine the role of symptom severity by examining both continuous and clinical-threshold grief and depression, in addition to other factors (i.e., hopelessness, reasons for living—RFL) associated with SI. Participants (n = 216) bereaved by combat, accident, or suicide completed an online survey. Associations between depression, grief, SI, RFL, and hopelessness were examined by multivariable logistic regressions and structural equation modeling (SEM). Across the sample, hopelessness and RFL were associated with SI while continuous measures of grief and depression were not. In contrast, clinical-threshold grief, clinical-threshold depression, hopelessness, and RFL each were associated with SI. In addition, of the grief characteristics, yearning was the most robust correlate of SI, and Survival/Coping Beliefs (SCB) was the RFL most associated with SI. SEM indicated that direct paths between grief and SI, hopelessness and SI, and RFL and SI were significant, but not between depression and SI. Instead, depression had a strong direct effect on hopelessness, and hopelessness had a direct effect on SI. Results are consistent with previously-identified associations between SI and clinical levels of depression and grief. AbstractThis study examines the effect of the unemployment anxiety experienced by young adults on their hopelessness through anxiety concerning the future in Türkiye. The study proposes that unemployment influences job hopelessness through future anxiety. Using the survey method, 720 responses were solicited from young adults. A structural equation model was constructed to test the reliability and validity of the measurement, as well as the structural model. The study results showed that unemployment and future anxiety influence hopelessness. Introduction: Many societal changes threaten the sustainability of health systems. Entrepreneurs play a significant role in creating sustainable innovations necessary for development and structural change. This study aimed to evaluate how university students studying health sciences perceive individual entrepreneurship during the COVID-19 pandemic and to explore the impact of COVID-19-related hopelessness on their perception of entrepreneurship. Methods: Six hundred eighty-one undergraduate students from the faculty of health sciences in Türkiye, participated in the study. The Individual Entrepreneurship Perception Scale and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used to collect data. Results: The results revealed that the students' perception of individual entrepreneurship was high, while their hopelessness levels were moderate. In addition, a moderate negative relationship was found between the students' hopelessness levels and their perception of individual entrepreneurship. The regression analysis showed that the students' hopelessness levels and subdimensions (hope, loss of motivation, and future expectation) accounted for 26.3% of the total variance in individual entrepreneurship perception. Increased hopelessness regarding the sub-dimensions of hope, loss of motivation, and expectations for the future decreased their individual entrepreneurship perceptions. Conclusions: These findings suggest that individual entrepreneurship perception among health sciences students could be negatively impacted during extraordinary periods related to health crises like pandemics. Background: Patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) have higher rates of suicidal ideation and a higher suicide attempt prevalence than patients with other types of depression. Purpose: This study was designed to study the suicidality trajectory and relationships between hopelessness, resilient coping, and self-efficacy, respectively, and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in patients with TRD during hospitalization and at 3 months after discharge. Methods: A longitudinal survey of 53 psychiatric inpatients with TRD was conducted. Suicidality, hopelessness, resilient coping, self-reported medication adherence, and self-efficacy were assessed at Weeks 1 and 2 (T0 and T1) after hospitalization and Week 1 and Months 1 and 3 after discharge. Data were analyzed using a Cox regression model. Results: Suicidality varied across the five time points, with a downward trend observed between T0 and T1 (reflecting the initial effects of inpatient treatment) and an upward trend observed across the 3-month follow-up. Antidepressant overdose was the most common method used for suicide. The risk of high suicidal ideation during follow-up was 1.63, 2.63, and 1.14 times higher, respectively, in participants with a high level of hopelessness, low level of resilient coping, and low self-efficacy. Also, having a higher level of hopelessness and being younger in age increased the risk of attempting suicide by 3.07 times and over 6 times, respectively, compared to older participants. Conclusions/Implication for Practice: Suicidality was shown to fluctuate between the in-hospital treatment phase and the first 3 months following discharge in this sample of patients with TRD. Younger age, feelings of hopelessness, low resilience, and low self-efficacy were the top four factors contributing to post-discharge suicide risk. These findings highlight the need for regular patient monitoring and assessment to identify those with TRD who are at high risk of suicide as well as the importance of focusing on hopelessness, resilience, and self-efficacy as predictors of suicide ideation and attempts. Nurses should help patients with TRD, especially those who are younger, and improve and maintain their hope, resilience, and self-efficacy both during hospitalization and shortly after discharge. Demoralization comprises multiple dimensions. Among them, Subjective Incompetence (SI) is the perception of being incapable of appropriate action in demanding circumstances. SI may be an early sign of demoralization preceding hopelessness, thus we aimed at integrating items related to Subjective Incompetence into the clinical assessment of demoralization. We assessed 414 subjects from the general population with the Demoralization Scale, 24 items (DS24) and the Subjective Incompetence Scale, 12 items (SIS12). We used multiple approaches to detect the optimal number of factors and their item structure, then conducted Bayesian Item Response Theory analyses to study item psychometric properties. Item Response Theory models were used to extrapolate latent severity ratings of clinical dimensions. We modelled the DS24 with five factors (Disheartenment, Sense of Failure, Helplessness, Irritability, Loss of Purpose) and the SIS12 with three (Subjective Incompetence, Inability to plan, Inability to Deal). The more complex IRT model had the best predictive value and helped to identify the items with better discrimination properties across the different dimensions. Twenty items were retained and used to develop the combined Demoralization and Subjective Incompetence Scale (DSIS20), which maintained high correlation with raw and latent trait scores of the longer versions. We combined selected items of the DS24 and the SIS12 to develop the DSIS20, a shorter assessment instrument that includes Subjective Incompetence as well as other clinical dimensions of demoralization. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between intolerance of uncertainty and hopelessness levels of victims who were residing in a container city after the February 6 earthquakes. This correlational descriptive study was conducted in Teknokent Container City located in X city between June and August 2023. The population consisted of survivors who were residing in the Teknokent container city established in the Y district of X city. 100 individuals were reached in the study. The researcher collected the data through face-to-face interview method using a Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale-Short Form (IUS 12), and the Beck Hopelessness Scale. It was determined that the participants had high levels of hopelessness and intolerance of uncertainty after the earthquake. Also, as the intolerance of uncertainty levels of the earthquake victims elevated, their hopelessness levels rose. The high levels of intolerance of uncertainty and hopelessness in the earthquake victims who resided in the container city demonstrate the necessity of implementing psychosocial support programs including psychiatric nurse, as well. Moreover, these concepts should be incorporated into the contents of these programs. Family members and loved ones of individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) can experience high levels of distress. Types of distress reported by family members include burden, grief, depression, guilt, and powerlessness. Hopelessness is a construct that has received little attention despite its potential relevance for this group. This study sought to examine, and assess potential change in, hopelessness among individuals attending a 12‐week Family Connections (FC) program. Participants were 75 family members, 29 men and 46 women. Most participants were parents (n = 43; 57%). Data were collected at four time‐points and outcomes included hopelessness, burden, and grief. The majority of participants (82%) reported scores within the ‘minimal’ or ‘mild’ ranges of hopelessness before the FC program. A greater proportion of participants in the 60–70 year age group reported scores in the ‘moderate/severe’ category when compared with younger age groups. The mean hopelessness score for all participants before FC was 4.61 which is considered mild. There was no significant difference in hopelessness scores after program completion. Although mean scores increased at both 3‐month and 12‐month follow‐ups, they continued to remain in the ‘mild’ category. Hopelessness scores in the current study are similar to those reported in previous studies, although no significant change was found after FC completion. Concepts of personal vs. situational hopelessness should be considered, as well as the relevance of assessing personal hopelessness for this participant group. Background Suicidal ideation arises from a complex interplay of multiple interacting risk factors over time. Recently, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has increased our understanding of factors associated with real-time suicidal ideation, as well as those predicting ideation at the level of hours and days. Here we used statistical network methods to investigate which cognitive-affective risk and protective factors are associated with the temporal dynamics of suicidal ideation. Methods The SAFE study is a longitudinal cohort study of 82 participants with current suicidal ideation who completed 4×/day EMA over 21 days. We modeled contemporaneous (t) and temporal (t + 1) associations of three suicidal ideation components (passive ideation, active ideation, and acquired capability) and their predictors (positive and negative affect, anxiety, hopelessness, loneliness, burdensomeness, and optimism) using multilevel vector auto-regression models. Results Contemporaneously, passive suicidal ideation was positively associated with sadness, hopelessness, loneliness, and burdensomeness, and negatively with happiness, calmness, and optimism; active suicidal ideation was positively associated with passive suicidal ideation, sadness, and shame; and acquired capability only with passive and active suicidal ideation. Acquired capability and hopelessness positively predicted passive ideation at t + 1, which in turn predicted active ideation; acquired capability was positively predicted at t + 1 by shame, and negatively by burdensomeness. Conclusions Our findings show that systematic real-time associations exist between suicidal ideation and its predictors, and that different factors may uniquely influence distinct components of ideation. Repeated suicide attempts are a significant risk factor for suicide, and anxiety sensitivity has been proposed as one of the individual characteristics that increase such attempts. However, there is a lack of research that explores the underlying mechanism of how anxiety sensitivity is associated with suicide attempts. The present study examined the mediating effect of rumination and hopelessness in the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and repeated suicide attempts among psychiatric patients. The moderating effect of gender in this mediating relationship was also investigated. Two hundred twenty-nine patients who visited the psychiatric department at a university hospital in Seoul completed self-report measures and structured clinical interview. Data on demographic characteristics as well as anxiety sensitivity (ASI-3), rumination (RRS), and hopelessness (BHS) were collected. Structured interviews (SCID-5-CV) were also administered to identify their history and frequency of suicide attempts. The results indicated a significant mediating effect of rumination and hopelessness in the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and repeated suicide attempts. This association differed by gender, demonstrating a moderated mediation effect. More specifically, the mediation effect was not significant among men. In the case of women, the simple mediation effect of hopelessness was significant (indirect effect = 0.008, Boot SE = 0.003, 95% CI [0.003, 0.016]), and the serial mediation effect of rumination and hopelessness was also significant (indirect effect = 0.006, Boot SE = 0.003, 95% CI [0.003, 0.012]). The results imply a significant link between hopelessness and suicide attempts, specifically observed in women (interaction effect = 0.081, SE = 0.033, 95% CI [0.015, 0.146]). The present study highlights the prominent role of anxiety sensitivity regarding suicidal risks among patients with mental disorders. Moreover, it is vital to consider both rumination, a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy, and feelings of hopelessness to understand their repeated suicide attempts better. We tested the role of sense of coherence, social support, satisfaction with life, and resilience, as resources in the association between fear of COVID-19, perceived vulnerability to disease, and depression. Data from 804 students were collected at three South African universities in 2022 and 2023 by means of an electronic survey and analysed using structural equation modelling. We found that higher levels of fear of COVID-19 and hopelessness were associated with depression among the sample. Satisfaction with life, sense of coherence, and perceived social support had significant negative relationships with depression, indicating that these represent potential protective resources. Perceived vulnerability to disease had a positive relationship with perceived social support. While fear of COVID-19 significantly impacted depression, it did not show a significant relationship with other mental well-being measures, such as satisfaction with life, sense of coherence, resilience, or social support. Hopelessness showed a strong negative correlation, not only with resilience but also with satisfaction with life, sense of coherence, and perceived social support, making it a critical factor in mental well-being. Perceived social support acted as a mediator between both hopelessness and perceived vulnerability to disease and depression. Satisfaction with life mediated the relationship between hopelessness and depression, and sense of coherence mediated the relationship between perceived vulnerability to disease and depression. While higher levels of fear related to COVID-19 and pervasive feelings of hopelessness were robust predictors of depressive symptoms, factors such as satisfaction with life, sense of coherence, and perceived social support emerged as protective resources. The well-being of married individuals is shaped by various psychological factors, among which psychological vulnerability, hopelessness, and psychological distress play critical roles. This study investigates how psychological vulnerability impacts well-being through the mediating effects of hopelessness and psychological distress. The sample comprised 522 married individuals aged 23 to 67 (M = 36.70, SD = 10.77). Data were collected using the Psychological Vulnerability Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-4, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Mental Health Continuum Short Form. Internal consistency reliability coefficients and composite reliability of the variables were calculated. Pearson Correlation analysis was employed to examine the relationships between variables, and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test the mediating roles. The significance of direct and indirect relationships was assessed using the bootstrap method. The analysis revealed significant correlations among the variables. SEM results indicated that psychological vulnerability positively and significantly predicted hopelessness and psychological distress, while hopelessness and psychological distress negatively predicted well-being. Additionally, the serial mediation of hopelessness and psychological distress in the relationship between psychological vulnerability and well-being was found to be significant. These findings suggest that psychological vulnerability can adversely affect the wellbeing of married individuals through the serial mediation of hopelessness and psychological distress. Objectives: This study examined the effects of bullying victimization on cyberbullying perpetration and investigated whether hopelessness and time spent online sequentially mediate the relationship between bullying victimization and cyberbullying perpetration among upper elementary students. Methods: The participants were 596 upper elementary school students {5th and 6th graders; 291 boys (48.8%)} from Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were collected through a self-report questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS macro version 4.3 (Model 6) by Hayes (2017). Results: First, bullying victimization positively influenced cyberbullying perpetration. Second, the sequential mediating effects of hopelessness and time spent online were significant. Lastly, time spent online mediated the effect of bullying victimization on cyberbullying perpetration, whereas hopelessness did not mediate this effect. Conclusion: These findings indicate a link between bullying victimization and cyberbullying perpetration. Therefore, it is recommended that cyberbullying prevention programs include strategies to reduce bullying victimization. Furthermore, high levels of hopelessness resulting from bullying victimization may lead to excessive internet use, increasing the likelihood of cyberbullying perpetration. Thus, victims need to be informed of about the importance of reporting bullying incidents to adults such as teachers, counselors, or parents. Additionally, if victims already exhibit high levels of hopelessness, it is necessary to encourage them to participate in evidence-based programs. Finally, the significant mediating effect of time spent online suggests that monitoring and intervening in victims’ online activities are crucial for reducing the likelihood of cyberbullying perpetration. Background Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are elevated among active-duty service members (ADSM) and veterans compared to the general population. Hence, it is a priority to examine maintenance factors underlying suicidal ideation among ADSM and veterans to develop effective, targeted interventions. In particular, interpersonal risk factors, hopelessness, and overarousal have been robustly connected to suicidal ideation and intent. Methods To identify the suicidal ideation risk factors that are most relevant, we employed network analysis to examine between-subjects (cross-sectional), contemporaneous (within seconds), and temporal (across four hours) group-level networks of suicidal ideation and related risk factors in a sample of ADSM and veterans (participant n = 92, observations n = 10 650). Participants completed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) surveys four times a day for 30 days, where they answered questions related to suicidal ideation, interpersonal risk factors, hopelessness, and overarousal. Results The between-subjects and contemporaneous networks identified agitation, not feeling close to others, and ineffectiveness as the most central symptoms. The temporal network revealed that feeling ineffective was most likely to influence other symptoms in the network over time. Conclusion Our findings suggest that ineffectiveness, low belongingness, and agitation are important drivers of moment-to-moment and longitudinal relations between risk factors for suicidal ideation in ADSM and veterans. Background: This study aimed to delineate the interplay between depression, hopelessness, and episodic future thinking (EFT), focusing on cognitive biases towards negative future thinking that are central to depressive symptomatically. Methods: A Japanese university student was utilized to scrutinize divergences in EFT across groups stratified by varying degrees of depression and hopelessness. The research leveraged a modified future thinking task (FTT), the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and the Beck Depression Inventory-II to gauge participants' levels of hopelessness and depressive symptoms. Results: Consistent with prior research, the non-depressed group showed a reduction in positive EFT, reinforcing the idea that diminished positive future thinking is a hallmark of depressive conditions, even in the absence of a clinical diagnosis. Moreover, individuals with comorbid depression and elevated hopelessness demonstrated a significant decrease in positive EFT and an increase in negative EFT, substantiating a distinctive cognitive profile for this subgroup. This finding suggests that the presence of hopelessness exacerbates the negative cognitive biases associated with depression. Conclusions: The study emphasizes the importance of considering hopelessness as an independent construct when assessing EFT in clinical contexts. The pronounced impact of hopelessness on future thinking in those with depression suggests that targeted interventions, such as future-directed therapy (FDT), may be particularly effective for individuals with hopelessness depression by focusing on modifying negative future thinking patterns and enhancing life quality. Due to its impact on mental health and well‐being, fear of happiness is beginning to receive more attention in research. This study, conducted in Hungary, explored the relationship between fear of happiness, perfectionism, loneliness, hopelessness, and academic burnout. Participants aged between 18 and 35 years (N = 1,148, M = 22 years, SD = 4.5) completed an online questionnaire that included self‐report measures of these constructs. In the present study, males showed higher levels of fear of happiness and perfectionism than did females. Analyses also revealed that both adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism, academic burnout, loneliness, and hopelessness were positively related to fear of happiness. In multiple regression analysis, gender had a positive and age had a negative role in the levels of fear of happiness. Maladaptive perfectionism, academic burnout, loneliness, and hopelessness were positive predictors, while adaptive perfectionism almost reached statistical significance. The Holy Qur'an is the main source of the Islamic religion, and for this reason, Muslims have been trying to understand it for a long time. The problem here is that in some cases, translation does not have the possibility of transferring the entire concept to the target language, therefore, the general translations of the Holy Quran are facing some inadequacies. One of the topics mentioned in the Holy Quran is despair. In the Holy Qur'an, two articles "Qunt" and "Despair" are used to refer to this issue, which naturally have differences based on the principle of divine wisdom and the linguistic principle of linguistic economy, while in the Persian translations below these two words are equivalent "Disappointment" is used. In this research, we intend to answer this question through library studies and the use of semantic methods, what is the difference in meaning between the two words "qant" and "despair" and what new equivalent can be suggested for them? It should be noted that despite the great importance of this question, no such research has been conducted so far. From the results of the current research, we can also point to the suggestion of translating "disappointment-turning back" for the article of Qant and assigning the equivalent of "disappointment" to the article of despair. It has recently been argued that hope is polysemous in that it sometimes refers to hoping and other times to being hopeful. That it has these two distinct senses is reflected in the observation that a person can hope for an outcome without being hopeful that it will occur. Below, I offer a new argument for this distinction. My strategy is to show that accepting this distinction yields a rich account of two distinct ways in which hope can be lost, ways that map onto the two senses of hope: A person can lose hope either by ceasing to hope for an outcome (hopelessness) or by ceasing to be hopeful that it will obtain (despair). Thinking about these negative attitudes in these two ways, I contend, is explanatorily rich and fruitfully reveals how they differ in phenomenology, behavioral differences, and the ways in which a person can escape them. Spiritual distress, hopelessness, and depression are concepts that are often used in palliative care. A simultaneous concept analysis (SCA) of these concepts is needed to clarify the terminology used in palliative care. Therefore, the aim of this study is to conduct a SCA of spiritual distress, hopelessness, and depression in palliative care. A SCA was performed using the methodology of Haase's model. A literature search was conducted in March 2020 and updated in April 2022 and April 2024. The search was performed on the following online databases: CINAHL with Full-Text, MEDLINE with Full-Text, MedicLatina, LILACS, SciELO, and PubMed. The search was achieved without restrictions on the date of publication. A total of 84 articles were included in this study. The results highlight that the three concepts are different but also share some overlapping points. Spiritual distress is embedded in the rupture of their spiritual/religious belief systems, a lack of meaning in life, and existential issues. Hopelessness is a sense of giving up and an inability to control and fix the patient's situation. Finally, depression is a state of sadness with a multi-impaired situation. In conclusion, refining the three concepts in palliative care is essential since it promotes clarification and enhances knowledge development towards intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This research aimed to determine the level of fear, anxiety, and hopelessness of Covid‐19 in young adolescents' post Covid‐19 period. Design and Samples: Young adolescents in the 17–24 age group were included in this study, which was conducted in a descriptive‐cross‐sectional design. Measurements: Sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire form and Coronavirus (Covid‐19) Fear Scale, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale, and Beck Hopelessness Scale were used to collect data. Results: 90.8% of the participants had been vaccinated, 26.9% had previously caught in Covid‐19, and 10.3% of those who had been caught in the disease had a severe course. 10.7% of young adolescents had to take medicines, 56.4% had a family history of Covid‐19, and 18.7% had lost a relative as a result of Covid‐19, was found. The level of fear, anxiety and hopelessness was higher among women, first‐grade students, those who did not receive the Covid‐19 vaccine, those who have caught in Covid‐19 before, and those who have lost a family due to Covid‐19. Conclusion: It is thought that the increase in the awareness level of young adolescents about Covid‐19 improves preventive health behaviors and enables the development of positive behaviors related to the disease. Introduction: When people feel hopeless, they are more likely to think about suicide. Prior work has shown that both hopelessness and suicidal ideation fluctuate over time; however, there are likely other contextual factors underlying increased hopelessness and suicidal ideation in moments of time. Method: In two studies using retrospective recall of a real event (Study 1, n = 268) and an experimental imaginal vignette design (Study 2, n = 356), we examined self‐criticism and self‐efficacy for self‐regulation as crucial factors underlying hopelessness in people vulnerable to suicidal ideation. Results: In both studies, greater state self‐criticism and lower state self‐efficacy were associated with greater hopelessness. In Study 2, we also measured suicidal ideation, and found that higher self‐criticism and lower self‐efficacy for self‐regulation scores were associated with greater suicidal ideation, even when controlling for negative affect. Evidence of an interaction between self‐criticism and self‐efficacy was found with scores in Study 2 but not in Study 1; specifically, lower self‐efficacy was associated with greater ideation when self‐criticism was high but not when self‐criticism was low. Conclusion: Overall, results support self‐criticism and self‐efficacy as important contextual factors underlying hopelessness and suicidal ideation and attending to the potential interactive effect between self‐criticism and self‐efficacy. The psychological state of people during the COVID-19 pandemic has attracted significant interest from researchers and the general public alike. The aim of this study is to examine the stress, burnout, hopelessness, and depression levels of university students toward the end of the pandemic. A survey model, as a quantitative research method, was applied in this study. The analysis revealed that 70% of the participating university students had moderate to high stress levels, and levels of stress among female students were found to be higher than those among male students. When the students' hopelessness levels were examined, it was seen that 81% of them felt hopelessness at medium or high levels. Hopelessness and burnout were seen to be associated with grade point average. A total of 61% of these students had moderate or high levels of depression symptoms, constituting an at-risk status. The results indicate that factors such as gender, year of study, and grade point average had varying effects on stress, burnout, hopelessness, and depression levels. Additionally, strong relationships were found among the four considered psychological variables, suggesting that they may influence one another and highlighting the need for further research in this area. Under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is of vital importance to explore its impact on the psychological wellbeing of the students in higher education. Accordingly, this research investigated hopelessness among students at a state university in Turkey throughout the pandemic. The research was conducted in two separate studies, one cross-sectional and the other longitudinal. Study I examined students' hopelessness level in relation to gender, job or income loss, social media use, academic unit, and grade. Study II compared students' hopelessness level during the distance and hybrid education periods. The data were collected online through Personal Information Form and Beck Hopelessness Scale in both studies. The findings of Study I indicated significantly higher hopelessness scores in females, students who experienced job or income loss, and seniors at faculties. It was also found that the level of hopelessness increased as the duration of social media use rose. In addition, Study II revealed that students' hopelessness scores significantly decreased during the hybrid education in contrast to the distance education. Based on these findings, we suggest that during distance education in times of crisis, psychological counseling and career guidance interventions should be planned and coordinated according to the characteristics of risk groups, and e-learning models offering the highest social interaction should be preferred. Family incivility, as a new form of family interaction, is more common in daily life and has negative effects on adolescents. The current study explored the association between family incivility and suicidal ideation and tested a moderated mediation model to examine the role of hopelessness, self-esteem, sex, and age in this relationship. A total of 857 Chinese adolescents (mean age = 14.7 years, SD = 1.68) completed self-report measures of family incivility, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, and self-esteem. The findings revealed that family incivility had a positive predictive effect on adolescents' suicidal ideation, which was mediated by hopelessness. Self-esteem moderated the relationship between family incivility and hopelessness. Sex moderated the relationship between family incivility and hopelessness, as well as the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Age moderated the relationship between family incivility and suicidal ideation as well as the relationship between hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Our study is the first to identify that family incivility is a new risk factor for adolescents' suicidal ideation, which has important theoretical and practical significance for preventing or intervening in adolescents' suicidal ideation from school and family aspects. Hopelessness is a key risk factor for suicide. This analysis explored whether hopelessness indicates a recent suicide crisis state and is linked with magnetoencephalography (MEG) oscillatory power and effective connectivity differences. Change in hopelessness ratings and effective connectivity post-ketamine were also evaluated in a subsample of high-risk individuals to evaluate correlates of dynamic changes over time. Participants (66F;44 M;1 transgender) included individuals with suicide crisis in the last two weeks (High Risk (HR), n = 14), those with past suicide attempt but no recent suicide ideation (SI) (Low Risk (LR), n = 37), clinical controls (CC, n = 33), and healthy volunteers at minimal risk (MinR, n = 27). MEG oscillatory power and clinical hopelessness ratings (via the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS)) were evaluated across groups. Dynamic casual modeling (DCM) evaluated connectivity within and between the anterior insula (AI) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). A subsample of HR individuals who received ketamine (n = 10) were evaluated at Day 1 post-infusion. The HR group reported the highest levels of hopelessness, even when adjusting for SI. MEG results linked hopelessness with reduced activity across frequency bands in salience network regions, with no group or group-by-interaction effects. Using DCM, the HR group had reduced intrinsic drive from granular Layer IV stellate cells to superficial pyramidal cells in the ACC and AI. In the pilot HR study, reduced hopelessness was linked with increased drive for this same connection post-ketamine. Hopelessness is a possible proxy for suicide risk. Aims Depressive symptoms are common in patients with heart failure (HF) and are associated with adverse outcomes in this group. This study examined depressive symptoms and associated determinants in patients with HF based on the hopelessness theory of depression. Methods and results In this cross-sectional study, a total of 282 patients with HF were recruited from 3 cardiovascular units of a university hospital. Symptom burden, optimism, maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (MCERSs), hopelessness, and depressive symptoms were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. A path analysis model was established to evaluate the direct and indirect effects. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 13.8% in the patients. Symptom burden had the greatest direct effect on depressive symptoms (β = 0.406; P < 0.001), optimism affected depressive symptoms both directly and indirectly with hopelessness as the mediator (direct: β = −0.360; P = 0.001; indirect: β = −0.169; P < 0.001), and MCERSs only had an indirect effect on depressive symptoms with hopelessness as the mediator (β = 0.035; P < 0.001). Conclusion In patients with HF, symptom burden, decreased optimism, and hopelessness contribute to depressive symptoms directly. What is more, decreased optimism and MCERS lead to depressive symptoms indirectly via hopelessness. Accordingly, interventions aimed at decreasing symptom burden, enhancing optimism, and reducing the use of MCERSs, while declining hopelessness, may be conducive to relieving depressive symptoms in patients with HF. This study was conducted with two groups (training and control) using a pretest/post-test design to determine the effect of cognitive behavioral approach-based psychoeducation on the levels of coping with hopelessness and stress of parents of children with cancer. The data were collected using the "Personal Information Form", "Coping with Stress Scale" and "Beck Hopelessness Scale." The training was given as a total of eight sessions of individual training every 2 weeks. The study showed that after the training, the training group scored significantly lower than the control group in the sub-dimensions of helpless and submissive approach in coping with stress and hopelessness levels and scored higher in the sub-dimensions of self-confident approach, optimistic approach, and seeking social support approach. It was found that cognitive-based psychoeducation had an effect on increasing the ways of coping with stress and decreasing the hopelessness levels of parents of children with cancer. Introduction. The prevalence of suicidal behavior in university students ranges from 14.1% to 27.9%, with suicide being the fourth leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 29. Hopelessness, decreased self-efficacy, depression, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation are among the main risk factors. Objective. To determine the effect of hopelessness, depression, anxiety, stress, drug use, and self-efficacy on suicide attempts in Mexican psychology students. Method. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was undertaken with a sample of 3,438 students from sixty-two universities accredited by the National Council for Teaching and Research in Psychology (CNEIP) from six regions in Mexico. Results. A total of 19.9% reported attempted suicide (85.1% women and 14.9% men); 36.4% drug use; 40.2% moderate to extreme stress; 50.1% anxiety, and 40.7% depression; 74.1% medium to high emotional dysregulation; 30.2% moderate to high hopelessness, and 32.9% low self-efficacy. Drug use (OR 1.897), sex (OR 1.756), anxiety (OR 1.218), hopelessness (OR 1.209), depression (OR 1.756), and stress (OR 1.050) respectively account for 17.2% of the variability of suicide attempts. Discussion and conclusion. Confirmation of the effect of the variables analyzed on the suicide attempts of psychology students underlines the importance of incorporating actions that will contribute to controlling the incidence of suicide. Purpose: This study aims to probe the relationship of facial disfigurement, stigmatization, burdensome, hopelessness and suicidal ideation in acid attack survivors and to scrutinize the mediating role of perceived burdensome and hopelessness in connection between facial disfigurement, social stigmatization and suicidal ideation among acid attack survivors. Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected from Holy Family Hospital which is located in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Acid Survivors Foundation and social media sites. Purposive sampling technique was used to collect the sample. Sample comprised of N = 74 acid attack survivors. English version of discrimination and stigma scale, interpersonal needs questionnaire perceived burdensome scale, suicidal ideation attributes scale, Beck hopelessness scale and observer-rated facial disfigurement scale were used for the assessment. Statistical analysis includes correlation and mediation analysis through process macro. Findings: Results indicated significant positive relationship between facial disfigurements, unfair treatment, stopping self and perceived burdensome with suicidal ideation, whereas overcoming stigma, hopelessness and positive treatment present a negative relationship with suicidal ideation. Results of the current study also showed that burdensome and hopelessness appear as significant mediator in association between facial disfigurement, social discrimination and suicidal ideation. This study provides the awareness about how by decreasing the hopelessness and perceived burdensome and resolving social stigmatization can minimize suicidal ideation and risks accompanying it. Aerobic exercise (AE) combined with pharmacotherapy is known to reduce depressive symptoms; however, studies have not focused on long-term AE for volumetric changes of brain regions (amygdala, thalamus, and nucleus accumbens [NAcc]) linked to the control of affective responses and hopelessness in individuals with major depression (MD). In addition, AE with motor complexity (AEMC) would be more effective than AE in causing brain plasticity. We compared the effects of 24 weeks of AE and AEMC combined with pharmacotherapy on clinical and volumetric outcomes in individuals with MD. Forty medicated individuals with MD were randomly assigned to nonexercising control (C), AE, and AEMC groups. The training groups exercised for 60 min, twice a week for 24 weeks. Clinical and volumetric outcomes were assessed before and after the 24 weeks. Effect size (ES) and confidence interval (CI) were calculated for within-group and between-groups changes. AE and AEMC reduced hopelessness (ES = −0.73 and ES = −0.62, respectively) and increased affective responses (ES = 1.24 and ES = 1.56, respectively). Only AE increased amygdala (ES = 0.27 left and ES = 0.34 right), thalamus (ES = 0.33 left and ES = 0.26 right) and left NAcc (ES = 0.54) volumes. AE was more effective than the C group in reducing hopelessness and causing brain plasticity. The changes in the right amygdala volume showed a strong trend in explaining 72 % of the changes in affective responses following AE (p = 0.06). Lack of posttraining follow-up and small sample size. The study aimed to examine the moderator effect of organ transplant waiting time on hopelessness and death anxiety. The study was conducted in a descriptive and correlational design with 378 patients on the transplant waiting list (Agust 2021- March 2022). Multiple linear regression and PROCESS macro-Model 1 were used in the analyses. In this study, the STROBE checklist was followed. According to the results of the regression analysis, waiting for a transplant for 6–10 years reduced death anxiety by 9.38 times and waiting for a transplant for 16–20 years increased death anxiety by 31.3 times. The predictors in the regression analysis explained 33% of the model. The moderator effect constituted 6.4% of the explained part of the model, which was 25.4%; the R2 change was 3.4% and significant. We found that the longer the waiting period for organ transplant recipients, the higher the hopelessness and death anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intervention process for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is inextricably associated with their parents' mental health problems, such as hopelessness, which may adversely affect resilience and indirectly impact the effectiveness of interventions for their children. Hence, the motivation to help parents of children with ASD reduce hopelessness prompted us to conduct the present study and explore the interrelationship between hopelessness symptoms and resilience. This study evaluated hopelessness and resilience using the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD‐RISC). Participants met the criteria for their children's ASD diagnosis by a psychiatrist (N = 448; 54.69% mothers; Meanage = 34.59 years, SDage = 4.94 years). Moreover, we used symptom network analysis to examine the variability in network structure between fathers and mothers. The flow function was applied to examine which hopelessness symptoms were directly or indirectly associated with resilience. The results showed that #BHS11 (i.e., unpleasantness‐ahead) was the central symptom found in the network structure for all parents and fathers, while #BHS17 (i.e., no‐future‐satisfaction) was the central symptom in the network structure for mothers. Additionally, #BHS6 ([NOT] expect‐to‐succeed) was directly and positively associated with resilience in all three network structures (i.e., all parents, fathers, and mothers). The results of the present study provide evidence that influential symptoms should be addressed and offer guidance for further interventions to reduce hopelessness and enhance resilience among parents of children with ASD. Background/Aim: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant threat to the lives of individuals, particularly frontline healthcare workers. This brought about negative emotions, such as anxiety and hopelessness. Despite the existence of research evaluating psychiatric symptoms among healthcare personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study is also significant in terms of evaluating and emphasizing the common negative emotions experienced by frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate anxiety and hopelessness levels in emergency service workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and to examine these levels in terms of specific variables. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among emergency service healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and healthcare officers working in a training and research hospital from July 10 to August 10, 2020 during the pandemic. Participants completed a survey that included a sociodemographic information form, the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS). A total of 135 personnel without a history of psychiatric illness or use of psychiatric medication were included in the study. Results: Of the 135 participants in the study, 67 were female, and 68 were male. The mean state anxiety score for all participants was 44.5 (12.6), trait anxiety score was 44.2 (7.3) and hopelessness score was 7.1 (5.2). It was found that the anxiety of emergency service workers during the pandemic was at a moderate level and their hopelessness was at a mild level. In the study, higher scores were found in hopelessness and state-trait anxiety measurements in married individuals compared to single participants (P=0.040, P=0.003, P=0.001, respectively). Trait anxiety scores were significantly higher among those with chronic diseases compared to those without chronic diseases, and in those living with families compared to those living alone (P=0.039 and P=0.017, respectively). A positive and moderate relationship was observed between hopelessness levels and statetrait anxiety levels (P<0.001 for all, r=0.457, r=0.425, respectively). Conclusion: During the COVID-19 pandemic, increased levels of anxiety and hopelessness were detected among healthcare workers in emergency services. Introduction: depression is a proximal factor associated with suicide risk. However, depression alone does not imply a risk of suicidal behavior. Various studies have demonstrated the significant role of hopelessness in contributing to suicidal behavior. Nonetheless, the probability of engaging in suicidal behavior can also be diminished in the presence of other factors known as protective, as purpose of life. Aim: to analyze the interactions among depression, hopelessness, and purpose in life, and their impact on suicidal risk in a young population. The hypotheses were: 1) suicide risk is directly correlated with depression and hopelessness and inversely correlated with purpose in life, and 2) purpose in life mediates the effect of hopelessness and depression in explaining suicide risk. Method: a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted. Through nonprobabilistic convenience sampling, 340 university students were recruited from two main cities in Colombia. The Plutchik Suicide Risk Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Purpose in Life Test were used. Results: a high prevalence of suicidal risk was identified. The group at risk of suicide exhibited higher scores in depression and hopelessness and lower scores in life purpose compared to the non-risk group. Moderate and strong correlations were observed among the variables. Path diagrams constructed using structural equation modeling revealed that purpose in life reduces the effect of hopelessness and depression on suicidal risk. Discussion: The importance of purpose in life as a resilience factor against suicidal risk is emphasized. Purpose in life plays a pivotal role in reducing suicidal risk as it cultivates a positive orientation towards the future, amplifies motivation for action, reshapes the perception of challenges, counteracts learned helplessness, and bolsters resilience. These findings corroborate contemporary theories concerning the interplay among purpose in life, hopelessness, depression, and suicidal risk. A purpose-centered intervention program can reduce suicide risk among university students. It helps students reflect on their values, goals, and aspirations, and teaches them skills to cope with stress and overcome challenges, thereby increasing their capacity for adaptation. To assess the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with an H1 coil as a treatment for hopelessness in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). We conducted a randomised controlled trial in a tertiary psychiatric institution in Croatia, including patients diagnosed with MDD without psychotic symptoms and with clinically relevant hopelessness. High-frequency (18 Hz) rTMS with an H1 coil was administered over four weeks on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. We examined changes in the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) scores. We randomly assigned 51 participants to the intervention group (rTMS plus standard therapy) and 52 to the control group (standard therapy). The mean (SD) ages were 50 (12.3) and 50 (10.4) years, and 47% and 52% of the participants were females in the intervention and control groups, respectively. Following treatment, the BHS scores decreased (unadjusted bivariate analysis, p = 0.043; false discovery rate (FDR) >5%). Multivariate analysis revealed that the BHS score was reduced by 10.8% (95% confidence interval (CI: −17.8% to −3.9%) in the rTMS group and 0.7% (95% CI: 7.5% −6.1%) in the control group (p = 0.037; FDR < 5%). rTMS with an H1 coil improved the symptoms of hopelessness in patients with MDD. Recent research has drawn attention to the prevalence of self-reported autism within online communities of involuntary celibates (incels). These studies suggest that some individuals with autism may be particularly vulnerable to the impact of incel forums and the hopelessness they generate. However, a more precise description of the experiential connection between inceldom, self-reported autism, and hopelessness has remained unarticulated. Therefore, this article combines empirical studies on the incel community with phenomenological and embodiment approaches to autism, hopelessness, and online affectivity. We analyze three interrelated aspects of online interactions in incel communities – worldview, bodily self-relation, and mutual dismissals – and examine how these elements contribute to the consolidation of the loss of significant life possibilities. By investigating the potential negative influence of specific online environments on affective dispositions, our approach contributes to the debate on current challenges to “situate” phenomenological psychopathology. According to the interpersonal theory of suicide, the perception of imposing a burden on loved ones increases the risk for suicidal ideation. Little research, however, has examined the interaction of burdensomeness with cognitive variables in predicting suicidal ideation in college students even though the relationship between burdensomeness and ideation may be contingent on levels of cognitive risk factors. The present study thus examined the relationships between burdensomeness, hopelessness, coping competence, and suicidal ideation. Questionnaires were administered to 279 undergraduate students from a university in the Midwest United States. After controlling for depression, hopelessness, and coping competence, burdensomeness significantly predicted ideation and accounted for variance above and beyond the control variables. Moreover, the relationship between burdensomeness and suicidal ideation was significantly moderated by coping competence and hopelessness. The findings suggest that perceived burdensomeness plays a critical role in the risk for suicide in college students. More specifically, the findings suggest that coping competence and hopelessness can be ideal targets for interventions as changes in these variables may attenuate the association between perceived burdensomeness and suicidal ideation. Background: Climate anxiety, one of the negative emotions created by climate change, is particularly prevalent among climate activists and young individuals who hold a more serious concern for environmental issues. Aim: This study aims to determine the effects of climate change awareness on the mental health of young people in Turkey. Methods: Designed as a descriptive and two-group comparative study, the target population of this study comprises young individuals aged 15 to 24 who are climate activists and those who are not. The study data was collected through e-questionnaires administered between March 15 and May 10, 2023, using a demographic characteristics form, a climate change anxiety scale and the Beck Hopelessness Scale. The study was completed with a total of 306 participants, including 103 young individuals who are climate activists and 203 young individuals who are not climate activists. Results: We determined that young individuals who are climate activists have a high level of climate change anxiety, while those who are not climate activists have a moderate level of climate change anxiety. We found that the levels of hopelessness in both groups are at a mild level. Additionally, within the group of climate activists, we observed that individuals with a higher level of knowledge about climate change tend to exhibit greater levels of hopelessness. Conclusions: We identified that as awareness and knowledge about climate change increase, climate change anxiety, and hopelessness also increase. Witnessing interparental conflict in childhood predicts psychological dating violence victimization (PDVV) in adulthood. As found in previous studies, PDVV and hopelessness are associated with depression. However, the associations among these four variables have not been explored in detail. The present study, therefore, examined the association between perceived interparental conflict and depression in adulthood and whether PDVV and hopelessness might operate as sequential mechanisms accounting for the association. Participants (N = 283; M age = 23.37 years, SD = 4.04 years) in romantic relationships completed measures of perceived interparental conflict, PDVV, hopelessness, and depression. The perceived interparental conflict was related to PDVV and depression but not to hopelessness in adulthood. Moreover, the association between witnessing interparental conflict and depression was serially mediated via PDVV and hopelessness. Because of the complexity of modern life in all aspects, people can face different stressful life events, which also lead to different physiological disorders. The current study aimed to discover the relationship between stressful life events and feelings of hopelessness, and psychological loneliness. The study sample consisted of (294) students from Al-Balqa Applied University (females, 262; males, 32). The researchers used three tools: the stressful life events scale, the hopelessness scale and the psychological loneliness scale. The study results showed a positive correlation between stressful life events and feelings of hopelessness and psychological loneliness. Gambling disorder has an increasing impact among young adults, which is a relevant life period in which emotional states and their management are of great importance. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between positive and negative affect, alexithymia, gambling motives, and hopelessness, and the predictive role of affect, alexithymia, and gambling motives on hopelessness. The sample comprised 83 participants, 92.8% men and 7.2% women who were in treatment for gambling disorder. Age ranged from 18 to 30 years (M = 24.83; SD = 3.80). Results showed that hopelessness correlated positively with negative affect, alexithymia and coping-related gambling motives, and negatively with positive affect. Similarly, social motives correlated with alexithymia and negative affect. In turn, coping-related motives and alexithymia also correlated with negative affect. Finally, motives for enhancement were predictors of hopelessness. These results may provide guidance for further clinical and preventive interventions in young populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
