Purpose: To determine whether ocular phenotypic features of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and/or participant-reported symptoms of dry eye disease are associated with depression in women participants enrolled in the Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA)., Design: Cross-sectional study., Methods: Women enrolled in the SICCA registry from 9 international research sites. Participants met at least 1 of 5 inclusion criteria for registry enrollment (including complaints of dry eyes or dry mouth, a previous diagnosis of Sjögren syndrome (SS), abnormal serology (positive anti-Sjögren syndrome antigen A and/or B [anti-SSA and/or anti-SSB]), or elevated antinuclear antibody and rheumatoid factor), bilateral parotid gland enlargement, or multiple dental caries). At baseline, participants had oral, ocular, and rheumatologic examination; blood and saliva collection; and a labial salivary gland biopsy (LSGB). They also completed an interview and questionnaires including assessment of depression with the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9). Univariate logistic regression was used to assess the association between depression and demographic characteristics, participant-reported health, phenotypic features of Sjögren syndrome, and participant-reported symptoms. Mixed-effects modeling was performed to determine if phenotypic features of KCS and/or participant-reported symptoms of dry eye disease were associated with depression, controlling for health, age, country or residence, and sex and allowing for nonindependence within geographic site., Results: Dry eye complaints produced a 1.82-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.38-2.40) higher odds of having depression compared to being symptom-free (P < .001). Additionally, complaints of specific ocular sensations were associated with a higher odds of depression including burning sensation (odds ratio 2.25, 95% CI 1.87-2.72, P < .001) compared to those without complaints. In both women with and without SS, the presence of symptoms of dry eyes and/or dry mouth rather than SS itself resulted in higher odds of depression. One particular ocular phenotypic feature of SS, a positive ocular staining score, was inversely correlated with depression., Conclusions: Participant-reported eye symptoms, particularly specific ocular sensations such as burning, were found to be positively associated with individual American College of Rheumatology/EUropean League Against Rheumatism (ACR/EULAR) SS criteria items., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. Objective: To study the prevalence of depression in patients with pterygium and factors that are related to depression and pterygium. Materials and Methods: The study was accomplished by descriptive study which selected studied population from patients who had pterygium at Thammasat Univeristy Hospital. Demographic characteristics and pterygium datas collected from the patients. Moreover, information regarding severity of dry eye disease, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), and scores from the 9Q-9 questions about the depression were also collected. The datas were stored as a unit of frequency was used to analyze the results. ANOVA, Simple linear regression and Pearson correlation were used for this purposes. Results: Data collection of 328 samples involved; 314 patients with primary pterygium (95.7 percent) and 14 patients (4.3 percent) with recurrent pterygium. The score for Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), of newly diagnosed cases (>13) found in 259 patients (79.0 percent). Depression prevalence in all pterygium samples was 22.9 percent. Demographic features of the population were not statistically significant, but in pterygium size more than or equal to 2.7 mm (p = 0.018) and time spent on using digital devices more than or equal to 2 hours per day (p = 0.023) were statistically significant affected to severity of depression. Conclusion: The prevalence of depression was found in all sample groups of pterygium at the prevalent level of 22.9 percent. Demographic features did not have any statistically significant, but in pterygium size and time spent on using digital devices were statistically significant affected to severity of depression. Purpose: Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface that leads to symptoms of discomfort and reduces quality of life. Several studies have shown an association with depression. We investigated the prevalence of depressive symptoms and their severity in DED patients and examined whether depressive symptoms correlate with signs, symptoms, or subtypes of DED or with psychological factors (resilience, premorbid personality, and subjective well-being).Methods: This cross-sectional study (n = 64, mean age 56.72, 70% women) was conducted at the Dry Eye Clinic of the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Düsseldorf. Psychological assessment included the Beck Depression Inventory, revised version (BDI-II); World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5); 13-item Resilience Scale (RS-13); and Munich Personality Test (MPT). DED parameters were assessed by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Schirmer test (ST), tear film break-up time (TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining (CFS). As the reference for the BDI-II depression score, we used standard values from a German sample of healthy individuals (n = 582, 66% women). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the effects of various parameters on depressive symptoms. Associations between variables were examined by Pearson or Spearman correlation tests.Results: Among all participants, 61% had depressive symptoms (25% minimal, 14% mild, 17% moderate, and 5% severe). The mean BDI-II score (11.95, ± 8.46) was significantly higher than in the healthy reference group (p < .0001). It was not correlated with the severity of signs or symptoms of DED or with its subtypes, but it was significantly negatively correlated with resilience (p < .0001) and subjective well-being (p < .0001). Depressive symptoms were negatively correlated with the premorbid personality trait extraversion (p = .036) and frustration tolerance (p < .0001) and positively correlated with premorbid neuroticism (p = .001), isolation tendencies (p = .014), and esoteric tendencies (p = .001).Conclusions: Depressive symptoms of all degrees of severity are common in DED patients, but they are not associated with the severity of signs or symptoms of DED. Subjective well-being, resilience, and premorbid personality do not correlate with the signs or symptoms of DED, but they do correlate with depressive symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
