Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the association between oral health and the development of frailty over a 10-year period in older Chinese adults., Design: This was a cohort study., Setting and Participants: The data in this study were derived from the 2008, 2011, 2014 and 2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS). The final analysis included 1155 older adults who had complete data for the Frailty Index (FI) and the other factors(oral health, sociodemographics, etc) that were analyzed in the study., Measurements: Frailty was assessed by the FI, which consists of 40 deficits(self-health assessments, diseases, physical functions,etc). Multivariable logistic regression was carried out to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) of the independent variables,which were obtained from investigator surveys and self-reports, in association with the development of frailty., Results: The prevalence of frailty at baseline was 22.94%, and the 10-year incidence of frailty was 24.16% (215/890). Age, number of natural teeth, use of dentures, toothache and sex were independent risk factors for frailty at baseline. After full adjustment, multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that compared with having ≥21 teeth, edentulism (ORs 3.575; 95% CI 2.095,6.101) and partial tooth loss (ORs 2.448; 95% CI 1.592,3.766) were associated with progression to frailty. Compared with those with ≥21 teeth, those with <21 teeth and without dentures (ORs 2.617; 95% CI 1.713,3.999) were more likely to progress to frailty., Conclusion: The loss of natural teeth is associated with the progression of frailty in older Chinese adults and denture using can help lower the odds of being frailty. Introduction: Dentures are worn by 20% of the United Kingdom population for both physical and psychological symptoms associated with tooth loss. However, significant morbidity and mortality can result if dentures are swallowed or aspirated. This 10-year review investigated the development of complications following denture aspiration or ingestion, and identified key learning points., Methods: The Medline database was searched for cases of denture ingestion or aspiration from October 1, 2009, to October 31, 2019. Search terms included "dental prosthesis, denture, dental plate, bridge and false teeth" and "swallow, ingest, eat, aspirate and inhale." Potential factors influencing the development of complications were assessed (hollow viscus perforation, fistula formation, abscess, bowel obstruction, necrosis, hemorrhage, and airway obstruction). Statistical analysis was performed using χ 2 and Pearson correlation tests in R Studio. No ethical approval was required., Results: Eighty-five patients were identified from 77 case reports. Fourteen articles were excluded due to insufficient information. Complications were documented in 37.6% (n = 32) of patients with 2 cases resulting in death. Duration of symptoms over 1 day ( P = .005) and delayed removal beyond 4 days post-ingestion ( P = .017) was significantly associated with increased rates of complications. There was no significant association between complication rate and patient age, denture type, level of impaction, or radiolucency., Conclusion: Denture aspiration or ingestion can have serious consequences. Factors impacting complication rate revolve around early recognition and treatment. Clinician awareness of the potential risks of dentures is paramount to early diagnosis. We recommend early intervention to reduce the morbidity associated with this unassuming device.

Introduction: the prevalence of denture related mucosa lesions (DRML) varies across different countries and a recent study reported an increasing trend in its prevalence. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of DRML and factors related to the lesions among denture wearers seen in a Nigerian teaching hospital., Methods: interviewer's administered questionnaire was used to obtain information from consecutive patients that had used removable denture for at least six months and consented to participate. Data related to gender, age, types of denture and presence of denture induced oral lesions were obtained, entered into a computer and analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 20. Descriptive statistics were expressed as frequency and percentages. Fisher's exact test was performed for discrete variables. A P-value less than 0.05 was regarded as statistically significant., Results: a total of 104 respondents participated in the study and 14 had DRML giving a prevalence of 13.5%. The majority, 11 out of the 14 (78.57%) presented with mucosa ulceration, while 8 (57.14%) out of the 14 cases of DRML were caused by over extension of the denture flanges. There was no statistically significant relationship between daily removal of denture fore going to bed to sleep at night and DRML (p=0.776)., Conclusion: the prevalence of denture related mucosal lesion was 13.3% and the major cause was over extension of denture flange. In South Korea, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) began its coverage of dentures and dental implants for older people in 2012 and 2014, respectively. This study aimed to investigate the impact of these policies on dental care utilization among people aged 65 years or older according to their sociodemographic characteristics. Data were collected from the Korea Health Panel Survey (KHP; years 2012 and 2015). The statistical significance of the relationships between sociodemographic characteristics and the use of outpatient dental care, denture, and dental implant were analyzed. Results showed an increase of 5.7%, 1.4%, and 2.8% in the use of outpatient dental care, denture, and dental implant, respectively, over the course of three years. Including dentures increased its use by 2.5-3.7 times among people aged 70 years or older. Including dental implants alleviated the disparities among older adults based on age groups and duration of education, except those among uneducated people; however, it caused inequity according to household income. Some Korean older adults remain neglected from the benefits of the expanded NHIS. Therefore, older adults' access to dental care should be enhanced by the implementation of policies to promote oral health care utilization, dental prosthetic services, and older adults' insurance coverage.

Background: The associations between the number of natural teeth/denture use and all-cause mortality remain unclear due to lake of investigation for the potential interaction between tooth loss and denture use and for the potential changes in these exposures over time in older adults. We undertake this study to evaluate the associations of the number of natural teeth and/or denture use with mortality in Chinese elderly., Methods: This is a prospective cohort study of 36,283 older adults (median age: 90). The number of natural teeth and denture use were collected with structured questionnaire. We evaluated hazard ratios (HRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) using a Cox proportional hazards model adjusting for demographic factors, education, income, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities., Results: We documented 25,857 deaths during 145,947 person-years of observation. Compared to those with 20+ teeth, tooth loss was associated with a gradual increase in mortality, with an adjusted HR of 1.14 (95% CI, 1.06 to 1.23) for those with 10-19 teeth, 1.23 (95% CI, 1.15 to 1.31) for those with 1-9 teeth, and 1.35 (95% CI, 1.26 to 1.44) for those without natural teeth. Denture use was associated with lower risk of mortality (adjusted HR 0.81; 95% CI, 0.77 to 0.84). Subgroup analyses indicated that the benefit of denture use was greater in men than in women (P = 0.02) and tended to decrease with age (P < 0.001). The effects of denture use did not differ among various degrees of tooth loss (P = 0.17)., Conclusions: Tooth loss was associated with an increased risk of mortality in older adults. Denture use provided a protective effect against death for all degrees of tooth loss however, this effect appeared to be modified by sex and age.

Objective: Frailty and poor oral health are both common age-related conditions. However, the association between oral health and frailty has not been explored thoroughly among older Chinese adults. We aimed to investigate the associations between number of teeth, denture use, and frailty among older adults in western China., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Community-based., Participants: Participants were 4037 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 and older from the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study., Measurements: Frailty was assessed using the physical frailty phenotype (PFP) and categorized as non-frail, prefrail and frail. In addition, number of teeth and denture use were examined by calibrated dentists. Multinomial logistic regression models were performed to examine the association between number of teeth, denture use, and frailty., Results: The overall prevalence of frailty was 6.7% among 4037 participants aged 60 and older in western China. Participants with no more than 20 teeth were associated with higher odds of being prefrail or frail whether wearing dentures or not. Denture using could not help lower the odds of being prefrail or frail for older adults with fewer teeth., Conclusions: This study suggested that frailty was associated with having fewer teeth (≤20 teeth) among older Chinese adults. Objectives: This study tests whether total tooth loss is a risk indicator for difficulty eating among a population with intellectual disability and whether complete denture wear mediates this risk., Methods: Dentate status and difficulty eating were reported for a Nationally representative sample of 690 adults over forty with intellectual disabilities as part of The Intellectual Disability Supplement to The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA). A logistic regression model tested the relationship between the Difficulty eating and Dentate status, controlling for the effects of other factors., Results: Of the 690 participants, 505 had some teeth (Group 1), 56 had no teeth and reported wearing dentures (Group 2) and 129 had no teeth, not using dentures (Group 3). A parsimonious regression model was developed including all 406 cases with no missing data. Adjusting for the effects of other factors, it was found that, compared to Group 1, the odds of difficulty eating was twice as great (OR = 2.01, 95% CI = 1.02-4.03) among people without teeth, not using dentures (Group 3). Conversely, edentulous participants who had dentures (Group 2) had far lower odds (OR = 0.21, 95% CI = 0.06-0.64) of reporting difficulty eating compared with Group 1., Conclusions: For adults with ID, total tooth loss was predictive of difficulty eating only when untreated. People with disabilities should be encouraged to maintain a functional dentition through preventive and conservative treatment. When adults with ID become edentulous, oral rehabilitation may reduce the risk of difficulty eating. Purpose: Tongue movement with unstable swallowing cause artifacts on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This may be associated with loss of occlusal support. This study aimed to clarify whether motion artifacts can be mitigated by denture wearing during MRI examination in patients without occlusal support, and whether denture wearing affect tongue stability, form, and position were also evaluated., Methods: Ten subjects without occlusal support (6 male, 4 female; mean age 73.20±10.12 years) participated in the study. MRI was performed with dentures worn (DW), followed with removal of dentures (NDW). Luminance standard deviation (LSD) was measured in regions of interest in the axial and sagittal planes. The position of the base of the tongue (TB), tip of the tongue apex (TA), and tongue's long diameter (TLD) were compared between DW and NDW., Results: NDW evoked ambiguous MR images in the axial and sagittal planes compared with DW. There were significant differences in LSD between DW and NDW in both the axial (p=0.047) and sagittal planes (p=0.02). No significant difference in the position of TB were observed (p=0.78). The position of TA was significantly more protruded with DW (p=0.007). Also, TLD was significantly longer with DW (p=0.001)., Conclusions: Results of this study suggest that wearing the dentures during MRI examination reduces motion artifacts in edentulous patients without occlusal support, and maintained the normal form of the tongue during imaging., (Copyright © 2017 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Objectives: To determine: the knowledge of the participants about removable dentures, importance of tooth replacement; prevalence of tooth loss and denture use; and factors associated with its non-use among an elderly population in Nigeria., Background: Tooth loss without replacement can impact negatively on the quality of life of the elders, thus making use of denture a basic requirement for those with partial or complete edentulous arches in developed countries. It is, however, not known if this is the case among elders in suburban Nigeria., Material and Methods: A cross-section of 392 consenting elderly participants aged ≥65 years residing at Idikan, Ibadan, Nigeria, were interviewed on their biodata, knowledge of removable denture and importance of tooth replacement, history of use of denture and reasons for non-use where applicable. Oral examinations for the presence of missing teeth and denture were conducted by an examiner. Data were analysed with SPSS and P value set at ˂.05., Results: The mean age of the participants was 73 (SD = 9.2) years. About 39% of the participants believed that it was important to replace missing teeth, 56.0% had poor knowledge about tooth replacement options, and 47.7% had at least a missing tooth. Only 7.1% of those with missing teeth had them replaced and all were using removable acrylic partial dentures. Financial constraint was the main reason for non-replacement of missing teeth (80.1%). Age, gender, occupation before retirement, income, level of education and presence of physical impairment were associated with non-use of denture (P ˂ .05)., Conclusion: Many elderly individuals had poor knowledge about removable dentures and the importance of tooth replacement. About half of the participants had full complement of teeth and only 7.1% of those with tooth loss reported denture wear. Nature provides many interesting examples of adhesive strategies. Of particular note, the protein glue secreted by marine mussels delivers high adhesion in wet and dynamic environments owing to existence of catechol moieties. As such, this study focuses on denture fixatives, where a non-zinc-containing commercial-based formulation has been judiciously modified by a biomimetic catechol-inspired polymer, poly(3,4-dihydroxystyrene/styrene-alt-maleic acid) in a quest to modulate adhesive performance. In vitro studies, in a lap-shear configuration, revealed that the catechol-modified components were able to enhance adhesion to both the denture base and hydrated, functional oral tissue mimic, with the resulting mode of failure prominently being adhesive rather than cohesive. These characteristics are desirable in prosthodontic fixative applications, for which temporary adhesion must be maintained, with ultimately an adhesive failure from the mucosal tissue surface preferred. These insights provide an experimental platform in the design of future biomimetic adhesive systems., Statement of Significance: Mussel adhesive proteins have proven to be promising biomimetic adhesive candidates for soft tissues and here for the first time we have adapted marine adhesive technology into a denture fixative application. Importantly, we have incorporated a soft tissue mimic in our in vitro adhesion technique that more closely resembles the oral mucosa than previously studied substrates. The novel biomimetic-modified adhesives showed the ability to score the highest adhesive bonding out of all the formulations included in this study, across all moisture levels. Aim: To evaluate changes in prosthesis hygiene in elders with Parkinson's disease (PD) in response to verbal instruction and positive reinforcement., Methods and Results: Elders with removable prostheses were divided into PD (n = 17) and control (n = 20) groups. Biofilm on prostheses was measured at baseline, and verbal instructions on prosthesis hygiene were given. After 7, 14, and 30 days, biofilm presence was re-evaluated and the results were shown to participants, with repeated cleaning instruction. At baseline, participants with PD had more biofilm on maxillary prostheses than did controls (p = 0.009). At 30 days, biofilm presence on maxillary and mandibular prostheses did not differ between groups. Both groups showed reductions in biofilm accumulation on prostheses over time, but this effect took longer to appear on mandibular prostheses in the PD group (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Verbal instruction and positive reinforcement can improve prosthesis hygiene in elders with and without PD., (© 2017 Special Care Dentistry Association and Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Purpose: The effect of nocturnal wear of denture on sleep quality and integrity is still not well understood. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to provide evidence on this topic., Methods: Electronic searches were conducted from 1964 up to September 2015, using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Only publications in English or French, in which sleep quality of edentate adult individuals wearing dentures at night was compared to those not wearing were included in the review. Random effects models were used to pool the effect sizes., Results: A total of 10 studies were included in the systematic review and 5 in the meta-analysis. No statistically significant difference between sleeping with denture and without denture was found for the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI; Standard Mean Difference = -0.60, 95 % CI -1.67-0.47; Z = -1.10; p = 0.27). However, there was considerable heterogeneity in the studies included in the meta-analysis (Tau 2  = 1.34; Q-value = 59.32, df = 4 (P < 0.0001); I 2  = 93.3 %). When results from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were pooled in subgroup analyses of AHI, there was a tendency towards favoring sleeping without dentures (P = 0.059) and no evidence of heterogeneity between studies (Tau 2  = 0.000; Q-value = 0.06, df = 1 (P = 0.80); I 2  = 0.000 %)., Conclusion: The current evidence suggests that there is no difference in the sleep quality and integrity of individuals wearing or not wearing their denture during sleep. However, the results of randomized controlled trials favoring sleeping without dentures and the likely presence of bias in the previous studies indicate the need for further randomized controlled trials for the development of clinical guideline.

Purpose: We examined how chewing rate and the extent of reactive hyperemia affect the blood flow in denture-supporting mucosa during chewing., Methods: The left palatal mucosa was loaded under conditions of simulated chewing or simulated clenching for 30s, and the blood flow during loading was recorded. We compared the relative blood flow during loading under conditions that recreated different chewing rates by combining duration of chewing cycle (DCC) and occlusal time (OT): fast chewing group, typical chewing group, slow chewing group and clenching group. The relationship between relative blood flow during simulated chewing and the extent of reactive hyperemia was also analyzed., Results: When comparing the different chewing rate, the relative blood flow was highest in fast chewing rate, followed by typical chewing rate and slow chewing rate. Accordingly, we suggest that fast chewing increases the blood flow more than typical chewing or slow chewing. There was a significant correlation between the amount of blood flow during simulated chewing and the extent of reactive hyperemia., Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, we concluded that slow chewing induced less blood flow than typical or fast chewing in denture-supporting mucosa and that people with less reactive hyperemia had less blood flow in denture-supporting mucosa during chewing., (Copyright © 2016 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Introduction: Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Although multifactorial, the exact pathogenesis of oral cancer is still unclear. Apart from tobacco chewing and smoking, chronic long-term irritation by ill-fitting denture is also said to be an important risk factor for the development of oral cancer. Literature quotes some amount of evidence that correlates long-term denture irritation as a risk factor for the development of oral cancer. Hence, we analyzed the correlation of denture-related sores as a risk factor for the development of oral cancer., Materials and Methods: The present case-control study included 140 newly diagnosed oral cancer cases and 140 patients as the control healthy group. One-hour questionnaire was framed and was conducted to the control group and the study group by 10 experienced interviewers who were trained for such type of analysis. Assessment of the patients' socioeconomic status, cigarette smoking habit, alcohol drinking habit, and oral health status was done and compared on the two study groups. Logistic regression models along with multivariate models were used for the assessment of the results., Results: In the control group and the cancer patient group, total of 140 new cancer cases and 140 subjects were included. Out of 140 patients in the cancer group, 16 were nonsmokers, while 110 smoked cigarette in the cancer patient group. As far as alcohol consumption is concerned, 42 patients in the control group and 102 patients in the oral cancer group were chronic heavy drinkers. Fried food intake was high in both the groups. Significant correlation was obtained while comparing the heavy smokers, heavy alcohol consumers, and oral health status in both the study groups., Conclusion: Our results favor the hypothesis that positive correlation exists between oral cancer risk and recurrent denture sores., Clinical Significance: People wearing denture prosthesis should be periodically visualized for identification of any mucosal alteration or changes at the earliest.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of using a low-cost powered toothbrush for cleaning on dental prostheses made of heat polymerized poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA., Methods: Heat cured PMMA specimens beam with the dimensions of 45.0 mm×6.5 mm×4.5mm were fabricated. The specimens were kept in water storage at 37 °C constant temperature for 0, 1, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days and randomly assigned for testing or control. Test specimens underwent brushing by using a powered toothbrush at an applied force of 2.00 N for 22 min with water as medium. Surface roughness measurement (Ra), flexural strength and efficacy of brushing to remove coated Candida albicans biofilm were investigated., Results: The results of the mean surface roughness value and the flexural strength were analysed by using two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test at 5% significance level. In general, the specimens showed no significant changes in flexural strength after brushing. However, the flexural strength and the surface roughness value were significantly lower in specimens group after 7 days in water storage compared to the control. SEM micrographs of post-brushed specimens revealed satisfactory removal of C. albicans biofilm., Conclusion: A low-cost powered toothbrush together with a liquid medium successfully removed C. albicans biofilm on dental acrylic PMMA-based prostheses, without compromising the mechanical properties., (Copyright © 2014 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Purpose: Dentures are often colonized with a variety of microorganisms, including Candida albicans, that contribute to denture stomatitis. Several in vitro models have been previously established to study denture-related microbial colonization and evaluate treatment efficacy of denture cleansers; however, those models typically fail to appreciate the complex topology and heterogeneity of denture surfaces and lack effective ways to accurately measure microbial colonization. The purpose of this study was to study microbial colonization with a new model system based on real dentures, to more realistically mimic in vivo conditions., Materials and Methods: Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe topological structures among surfaces from different parts of the denture. Employing C. albicans as a model microorganism, we established microbial colonization on different denture surfaces. Moreover, we applied a modified MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) colorimetric assay to quantify C. albicans colonization on dentures without the necessity of biofilm removal and to evaluate treatment efficacy of denture cleansers., Results: There were significant variations in topological structures among surfaces from different parts of the denture, with the unpolished side having the highest amounts of indentations and pores. The distinct denture surfaces support microbial colonization differently, with the unpolished side containing the highest level of microbial colonization and biofilm formation. Furthermore, the modified MTT colorimetric assay proved to be an accurate assay to measure biofilm formation on dentures and evaluate treatment efficacy of denture cleansers., Conclusion: This new denture model system in conjunction with the MTT colorimetric assay is a valuable tool to study denture-related microbiology and treatment approaches., (© 2013 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Background: Ingested dental prosthesis are susceptible to impaction in the gastrointestinal tract due to their sharp edges, size and contour. Delays in presentation arise from the lack of clear history of ingestion and misdiagnosis occurs due to the radiolucency of denture material on plain radiography. An acquired, non-malignant tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) may develop from a chronically impacted denture. Surgical management of a TOF secondary to denture is a challenging clinical problem that is rarely reported in the literature and no previous case reports have described the two-staged reconstruction approach that we present here. Case presentation: We report a case of a male in his early 60s who presented to an acute general hospital with symptoms ongoing for over one year of dysphagia, recurrent chest infections and weight loss. Barium swallow and computed tomography identified an ingested dental prosthesis (denture) that had caused a TOF. He was transferred to our specialist thoracic surgery unit where an attempt to remove the foreign body endoscopically was abandoned due to firm impaction and risk of further injury. The subsequent multi-disciplinary management of this complex case required a two-staged reconstruction approach. The first procedure involved extracting the foreign body, repairing the underlying defects with tracheal resection and anastomosis, and creating an oesophageal diversion with cervical oesophagostomy. The second procedure achieved continuity of the gastrointestinal tract with gastric pull-up and pharyngo-gastric anastomosis. Following rehabilitation, the patient was discharged on oral intake alongside percutaneous jejunostomy feeding. Conclusions: Early recognition and removal of impacted dental prosthesis is essential to prevent morbidity and mortality. Delayed diagnosis can lead to acquired TOF with associated consequences such as recurrent pulmonary infection, mediastinitis and nutritional deficit. Challenges we encountered, such as failed attempts at endoscopic retrieval and the difficult dissection of fibrotic tissue, were directly due to the delayed identification of the denture. We highlight the importance of holding a high index of clinical suspicion of foreign body ingestion in dental prosthesis wearers who present with recurrent chest infections and ongoing dysphagia. We also promote the need for a collaborative multi-disciplinary approach in the surgical management of complex cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Differences in the effects of cream‐type denture adhesives and home liners remain unclear. Objective: This cross‐sectional study aimed to clarify the differences in the oral‐hygiene status and masticatory performance between participants using cream‐type denture adhesives and those using home liners. Methods: Masticatory performance with and without cream‐type denture adhesives and home liners was evaluated using colour‐changeable chewing gum. Oral hygiene was assessed using the tongue coating index (TCI). Propensity‐score matching was performed using oral moisture, presence of palatal or mandibular protuberances, type of residual ridge, denture type (complete or partial denture), and denture retention as background factors. Wilcoxon signed‐rank test was used to examine the differences in masticatory performance with and without cream‐type denture adhesives and home liners and differences in masticatory performance and TCI between the cream‐type denture adhesive and home‐liner groups. Results: This study included 38 and 40 cream‐type adhesive and home‐liner users, respectively, and 17 pairs were obtained after propensity‐score matching. The Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests showed that masticatory performance was significantly different with and without the use of home liners, and higher values were obtained with the use of home‐liners. However, the cream‐type denture adhesive and home‐liner groups showed no significant differences in terms of the change in masticatory performance with the use of them. Furthermore, Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests showed that TCI values were significantly high in the cream‐type adhesive group. Conclusion: The findings in this study suggest that home liners improve masticatory performance and that participants regularly using cream‐type denture adhesives have poorer oral hygiene. The aim of this study is to present a method that optimizes clinical and laboratory workflow in the fabrication of implant‐supported removable dentures by combining conventional and digital protocols. A 73‐year‐old patient came to our clinic for treatment of a completely edentulous lower jaw. Two Neodent Helix GM implants were placed in the canine regions and a removable denture with Locator GM Novaloc retention elements was fabricated. The DENTCA system was used for impressions, border molding, and to determine both occlusovertical dimension (OVD) and reproducible, physiological position of lower jaw (RPPLJ) in a single clinical visit. In result, we have fabricated a removable denture with implant retention in just two appointments. We can conclude that DENTCA system is a reliable method that allows fabrication of implant‐retained removable denture in two clinical visits. The registration of the prosthetic field boundaries, OVD and RPPLJ, combined with CAD technologies, represents a contemporary and accurate method. This report of four clinical cases aims to illustrate the use of a lateral implant as a solution for implant overdentures in the mandible in different clinical situations. The first two cases describe the clinical situations of patients wearing two‐implant mandibular overdentures until the failure of one of the implants, one due to implant loss and the other due to a fracture of an abutment screw, and how the conditions were managed. The third case illustrates the placement of a single implant to retain an overdenture, where a midline implant, as originally planned, was not feasible due to anatomic reasons. The final case describes the use of a lateral implant to support and retain a single‐implant mandibular overdenture. The four cases demonstrate that a single lateral implant can be utilized as sole retention in cases of a failing contra‐lateral implant and as an alternative to a single implant in the midline. Objective: Previous studies focused on the benefits of adequate prosthodontic treatment, while few studies have investigated the prosthodontic‐related risks to health. As a modifiable oral health indicator, the association of ill‐fitting prosthesis (IFP) with hypertension has not been fully explored. Methods: This cross‐sectional study involved 158,659 adults in Beijing (2009–2017) receiving intra‐oral examinations and blood pressure measurements. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the association of IFP with the prevalence of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≧ 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≧ 90 mmHg, as well as subgroup analyses by different fixed IFP subgroups (according to involved teeth number) and removable IFP subgroup. We further investigated effect modifications among stratified populations. Results: 158,659 individuals were included for analysis, 346 (26.86%) in IFP group and 27,380 (17.40%) in non‐IFP group (p < 0.001) were hypertensive. After adjustment of sex, age, obesity, dyslipidaemia, diabetes, hsCRP, family history of CVD, self‐reported smoking, self‐reported drinking and WC, ORs of hypertension, SBP ≧ 140 mmHg and DBP ≧ 90 mmHg were 1.330 (95% CI: 1.162–1.522), 1.277 (95% CI: 1.098–1.486) and 1.376 (95% CI: 1.186–1.596), respectively (p < 0.05). Furthermore, after full adjustment, the number of involved teeth showed a significant incremental trend with hypertension risk in the population with and without IFP (p for trend <0.001). The IFP–blood pressure associations were more pronounced in females, 18–60 years, non‐obese and diabetic participants. Purpose: Laughter is expected to have health-protective effects, but the potential link between tooth loss and laughter remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between tooth loss and a low frequency of laughter among older adults in Japan, to elucidate whether this association could be mitigated by dental prostheses, and to evaluate the magnitude of the association mediated by poor oral function. Methods: We used cross-sectional data from 157,708 functionally independent participants aged ≥65 years (46.3% male) from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. A modified Poisson regression model was applied to examine the association between the number of remaining teeth (≥20/10-19/0-9), dental prostheses use, and infrequent laughter (i.e., laughing never or almost never). Causal mediation analysis was performed to assess whether the association was mediated by difficulties in eating hard foods, choking, or dry mouth. Results: Among the participants, 9,129 reported infrequent laughter. Participants with ≤9 and 10-19 teeth who did not use dental prostheses had a 1.29 and 1.14 times higher likelihood of infrequent laughter than those with ≥20 teeth, respectively. Furthermore, difficulty eating hard foods, choking, and dry mouth mediated 22.8%, 0.4%, and 4.3% of the association between fewer remaining teeth and infrequent laughter, respectively. Meanwhile, we did not find evidence for the differences in infrequent laughter between participants with ≤19 teeth using dental prostheses and those with ≥20 teeth. Background: Tissue conditioners are used for treating and improving the tissues supporting complete dentures. On the other hand, recent advances in nanotechnology have revolutionized various fields of science, including dentistry. The present study aimed to investigate novel antimicrobial applications of copper oxide nanoparticle-based tissue conditioner used in complete prostheses. Methods: The present experimental study included 126 tissue conditioner samples with different concentrations of copper oxide nanoparticles (20%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%, 1.25%, 0.625%, and 0% w/w). The samples were incubated with Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans in 24-well plates for 24 h. Then, samples from the wells were re-incubated for 24 h, and the microorganisms were counted. Results: The culture media containing E. faecalis and P. aeruginosa showed significantly different growth between different nanoparticle concentrations following 24 h (P < 0.001), showing a reduction in bacterial growth with increased nanoparticle concentration. Both bacteria did not show any growth at the 20% concentration. However, C. albicans showed significant differences in growth between different nanoparticle concentrations following 48 h (P < 0.001), showing a reduction in growth with increased nanoparticle concentration. Also, the least growth was observed at the 20% concentration. Conclusions: In conclusion, the CuO nanoparticles were prepared using a green synthesis methon in the suitable sizes. Moreover, the tissue conditioners containing CuO nanoparticles showed acceptable antimicrobial properties against E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to investigate the prevalence of opportunistic respiratory pathogens colonizing removable dental prostheses in older adults without respiratory diseases. Methods: This review was registered with PROSPERO and conducted in accordance with the principles formed by the working group of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) to evaluate systematic reviews of prevalence data. Literature searches were conducted across five electronic databases. Quality assessments were determined according to a revised JBI critical appraisal checklist across nine criteria. Comparison between fixed‐ and random‐effects meta‐analyses were performed for sensitivity analysis. Prediction intervals were also presented when three or more studies were included in the meta‐analysis. Results: Across the databases, 1091 articles were identified, and 591 articles remained after the removal of duplicates. Twenty "potentially effective" studies were identified. Ultimately eight studies informed this review and meta‐analyses were performed for 13 known respiratory pathogens. The meta‐analyses identified the top three common respiratory pathogens residing on the removable prostheses were, in descending order: Staphylococcus aureus: 31.81% (95% CI: 13.34%–48.24%); Staphylococcus epidermidis: 14.07% (95% CI: 7.88%–21.48%); Klebsiella pneumoniae: 10.50% (95% CI: 2.55%–22.30%). The heterogeneity scores for nine respiratory pathogen analyses were classified as "unimportant inconsistency", I2 = 0% (p > 0.1). For sensitivity analysis, there was no difference between the random‐ and fixed‐effects models. Conclusion: The existing evidence demonstrated a high burden of certain opportunistic respiratory pathogens, which may be considered a major potential cause of respiratory infections in older adults wearing removable prostheses. Purpose: Older adults with removable dentures experience high rates of both caries (when the natural dentition remains) and salivary gland dysfunction. While many commercial dental therapeutic agents target these two interrelated problems, none have been labeled for use on the fitting surface of removable dentures. Off‐label use of MI Paste (GC America, Alsip, IL), a dental therapeutic containing casein‐phosphopeptide‐amorphous‐calcium‐phosphate (CPP‐ACP), was investigated following its application to the fitting surface of complete denture(s) with subsequent effects on salivary conditions measured. Materials and methods: Salivary flow rate and pH were recorded at baseline and 15 min following the application of 1 mL of CPP‐ACP paste to the fitting surface of each participant's denture through whole saliva collection. To assess buffering capacity, equivalent volumes of 0.01 M lactic acid were added to the collected saliva samples, and pH reduction was measured. Comparisons of salivary parameters between baseline and post‐CPP‐ACP paste application and between subjects with and without self‐reported xerostomia were conducted using a paired‐sample t‐test, Wilcoxon signed‐rank test, or two‐sample t‐test as appropriate. Results: Of the 28 participants (mean age = 70.3 ± 13.7 years, 17 males), 11 reported xerostomia. CPP‐ACP‐paste application was associated with decreased pH reduction during acid challenge compared to baseline (0.95 ± 0.24 vs. 1.54 ± 0.53, p < 0.001), and a higher final pH following acid challenge (5.93 ± 0.34 vs. 5.40 ± 0.66, p < 0.001). While the flow rates observed at post‐CPP‐ACP paste application were greater than those at baseline, the difference was not statistically significant (0.67 ± 0.44 mL/min vs. 0.55 ± 0.34 mL/min, p = 0.053). No significant differences were found in any salivary parameters between participants with or without self‐reports of xerostomia. Conclusions: The findings highlight potential positive effects on salivary conditions following the application of the CPP‐ACP‐containing product, MI Paste, to the fitting surface of a removable complete denture as a potential caries‐risk‐management tool when natural dentition remains. Oral infections occur due to contact between biofilm rich in Candida albicans formed on the inner surface of complete dentures and the mucosa. This study investigated historical advances in the prevention and treatment of oral mucosal infection and identified gaps in the literature. Bibliographic research was conducted, looking at PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, where 935 articles were found. After removing duplicates and excluding articles by reading the title and abstract, 131 articles were selected for full reading and 104 articles were included. Another 38 articles were added from the gray literature. This review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The historical period described ranges from 1969 to 2023, in which, during the 21st century, in vitro and in vivo studies became more common and, from 2010 to 2023, the number of randomized controlled trials increased. Among the various approaches tested are the incorporation of antimicrobial products into prosthetic materials, the improvement of oral and denture hygiene protocols, the development of synthetic and natural products for the chemical control of microorganisms, and intervention with local or systemic antimicrobial agents. Studies report good results with brushing combined with sodium hypochlorite, and new disinfectant solutions and products incorporated into prosthetic materials are promising. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For patients who have difficulty in mechanical cleaning of dental appliances, a denture cleaner that can remove biofilm with dense extracellular polymeric substances is needed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of diatom complex with active micro-locomotion for removing biofilms from 3D printed dentures. The diatom complex, which is made by doping MnO2 nanosheets on diatom biosilica, is mixed with H2O2 to generate fine air bubbles continuously. Denture base resin specimens were 3D printed in a roof shape, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (107 CFU/mL) was cultured on those for biofilm formation. Cleaning solutions of phosphate-buffered saline (negative control, NC), 3% H2O2 with peracetic acid (positive control, PC), denture cleanser tablet (DCT), 3% H2O2 with 2 mg/mL diatom complex M (Melosira, DM), 3% H2O2 with 2 mg/mL diatom complex A (Aulacoseira, DA), and DCT with 2 mg/mL DM were prepared and applied. To assess the efficacy of biofilm removal quantitatively, absorbance after cleaning was measured. To evaluate the stability of long-term use, surface roughness, ΔE, surface micro-hardness, and flexural strength of the 3D printed dentures were measured before and after cleaning. Cytotoxicity was evaluated using Cell Counting Kit-8. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS for Windows with one-way ANOVA, followed by Scheffe's test as a post hoc (p < 0.05). The group treated with 3% H2O2 with DA demonstrated the lowest absorbance value, followed by the groups treated with 3% H2O2 with DM, PC, DCT, DCT + DM, and finally NC. As a result of Scheffe's test to evaluate the significance of difference between the mean values of each group, statistically significant differences were shown in all groups based on the NC group. The DA and DM groups showed the largest mean difference though there was no significant difference between the two groups. Regarding the evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of the denture base resin, no statistically significant differences were observed before and after cleaning. In the cytotoxicity test, the relative cell count was over 70%, reflecting an absence of cytotoxicity. The diatom complex utilizing active micro-locomotion has effective biofilm removal ability and has a minimal effect in physical and mechanical properties of the substrate with no cytotoxicity. BACKGROUND: Traditionally, alcohol sprays are used for disinfection of acrylic-base denture surfaces. A limited number of studies have assessed the role of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in this regard; however, it remains debatable whether conventional alcohol sprays are superior to aPDT in terms of antifungal activity or vis versa. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present in vitro study is to compare the antifungal activity of conventional alcohol sprays and aPDT on acrylic denture resin. METHODS: Individuals wearing complete dentures at least on one arch were included. Dentures were randomly divided into three groups. Groups 1-3 were disinfected with an alcohol-based antiseptic spray and aPDT, respectively. Assessment of oral yeast growth was done using swab samples. The culture mediums were incubated at 37 ∘ C for 72 hours and viewed through a microscope. The numbers of colony forming units (CFU/ml) were determined. P < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: At baseline, the mean CFU/ml in Groups 1–3 were comparable. After disinfection, a statistically significant reduction in microbial CFU/ml was observed in Groups 1 (P < 0.05) and 2 (P < 0.05) compared with baseline. In Group 3, there was no difference in CFU/ml throughout the study. After disinfection, there was no difference in microbial CFU/ml in dentures in Groups 1 and 2. Objective: To evaluate a 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (SH) protocol in reducing Candida spp. levels in complete dentures (CD) and palate and denture stomatitis (DS) remission. Material and Methods: Twelve CD wearers diagnosed with Candida-associated denture stomatitis (CADS) had their initial situation (Candida spp. levels and DS score) recorded (baseline). Then, participants were instructed to soak dentures once a day (10 minutes) in 0.5% SH. Candida spp. levels and DS scores were reassessed after 15, 30, and 60 days of SH denture cleanness. Biofilms from the denture base and palate were seeded in CHROMagar Candida. After incubation, colony-forming units were calculated. The palate was photographed at each time point, and DS was assessed according to Newton's classification. Data of Candida spp. levels were analyzed by 2-way repeated measures ANOVA followed by the Holm-Sidak test, and DS scores data were accessed by Friedman's 2-way ANOVA by ranks (α=0.05). Results: 0.5% SH significantly reduced Candida spp. levels after treatment compared to baseline (p<0.001) for both sites. Although at baseline, Candida spp. counts were higher on the denture base (p<0.001), no significant differences were observed between the collected areas within the other time points (p<0.05). Also, 0.5% SH effectively reduced clinical signs of DS after treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: The protocol tested effectively decreased Candida spp. levels on the denture base and palatal mucosa and effectively reduced the signs of DS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess the effect of hygiene protocols and time on the physical–mechanical properties and colony-forming units (CFU) of Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus mutans on 3D-printed denture resins (SmartPrint and Yller) with extrinsic pigmentation compared to conventional resin (CR). The protocols were evaluated: brushing (B), brushing and immersion in water (W), 0.25% sodium hypochlorite (SH), and 0.15% triclosan (T), simulating 0, 1, 3, and 5 years. The data were analyzed by ANOVA with repeated measurements, ANOVA (Three-way) and Tukey's post-test, generalized linear model with Bonferroni adjustment, and ANOVA (Two-way) and Tukey's post-test (α = 0.05). The protocols influenced color (p = 0.036) and Knoop hardness (p < 0.001). Surface roughness was influenced by protocols/resin (p < 0.001) and time/resin (p = 0.001), and flexural strength by time/protocols (p = 0.014). C. albicans showed interactions with all factors (p = 0.033). Staphylococcus aureus was affected by protocols (p < 0.001). Streptococcus mutans exhibited no count for SH and T (p < 0.001). Yller resin showed more color changes. The 3D-printed resins displayed lower microhardness, increased roughness, and decreased flexural strength compared to CR with all protocols in a simulated period of 5 years. Purpose: To survey dentists in Germany regarding their preferred cementation regimen for fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated from various restorative materials. Materials and Methods: An online survey was developed for completion by dentists in Germany between 08/2019 and 02/2020. The questionnaire gathered information about the cementation regimen (conventional, including the acid-base cements zinc-oxide phosphate or any glass-ionomer cement; self-adhesive; adhesive; don't know) that the participant would preferably select for the insertion of single- or multi-unit FDPs fabricated from various restorative materials. Data were also collected on demographic and personal characteristics. Results: A total of 721 dentists completed the survey, and the data from 688 questionnaires were included in the analysis. Conventional cementation was the option of choice for restorations fabricated from alloy/porcelain-fused- to-metal among 91.0% of the participants and for restorations fabricated from polycrystalline ceramics among 42.9% of the participants. Adhesive cementation was preferred for restorations fabricated from feldspathic/leucite-reinforced glass ceramics (77.9%), lithium-disilicate glass ceramics (67.5%), zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate glass ceramics (42.0%), and CAD/CAM resin composites (63.8%). Uncertainties regarding the appropriate cementation protocol for restorations fabricated from CAD/CAM resin composites were reported by 15% of the participants. More than 20% of the participants selected a technique that is less or not at all recommended for the cementation of restorations fabricated from zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate glass ceramic and CAD/CAM resin composites. Conclusion: The results of the survey suggest that dentists in Germany select the cementation regime depending on the restorative material. Some of the participating dentists selected cementation regimens that are less or not at all recommended for restorations fabricated from zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate glass ceramic and CAD/CAM resin composites, or were not sure about the appropriate cementation protocol. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of denture wearing on the occurrence of fungal isolates in the oral cavity before and after complete denture insertion. Fifty completely edentulous patients were selected. Swab samples were collected intraorally before the fabrication of complete dentures from the palatal mucosal surface and after complete denture fabrication (1 and 7 days after denture insertion). Further, these samples were inoculated and incubated. Results showed that in 48 patients, no isolate of fungus before denture insertion was found. In two subjects, results were false positive (contamination from the environment), and in six patients, there was an increase in growth, but not much significant increase of growth was seen (mild growth of fungus only after denture insertion). One of the major findings of this study was that the overall occurrence of fungal isolates (before and after denture insertion) in the oral cavity was not significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To explore the differences in plaque accumulation on the fitting surface of full‐arch implant‐supported fixed prostheses with contact or noncontact pontics. Materials and Methods: Nineteen patients (20 prostheses, 7 in the maxilla, and 13 in the mandible) intending to undergo full‐arch implant‐supported immediate function prostheses were recruited. During immediate restoration and using the midline as the boundary, one side was restored as a pontic and mucosa noncontact type (the test group), and the opposite side was restored as a pontic and mucosa contact type (the control group). In a follow‐up 6 months after the surgery, the cleanliness of the fitting surface of the immediate prosthesis was evaluated by plaque staining and debris index determination. Patient satisfaction was investigated by questionnaire. Results: Twenty prostheses from 19 patients included in the randomized controlled trial were followed up. Among the 20 prostheses, the percentage of area covered with plaque was significantly lower in the test group compared with that in the control group (31.5 ± 15.8% vs. 43.7 ± 15.3%; p < 0.001). The debris index in the test group was lower than that in the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant (2.77 ± 0.73 vs. 3.15 ± 0.90; p > 0.05). In the patient satisfaction survey, most of the patients were satisfied with most aspects of the prostheses, however, nearly half of the patients were not satisfied with the cleaning. Conclusions: The pontic and mucosa noncontact prosthetic design reduces plaque accumulation on the fitting surface, which is beneficial for maintaining oral cleanliness. However, the majority of study samples were mandible and conclusions may not be fully applicable to maxilla. Trial registration: www.chictr.org.cn (ChiCTR1900028576). Denture prostheses are an ideal and extensive reservoir for microorganisms to attach to their surfaces. The aim of the study was to elucidate interactions between materials for the fabrication of denture bases and the attachment of microorganisms, focusing on respiratory pathogens and Candida species. Specimens (6 mm × 1 mm) with a standardized surface roughness (Sa = 0.1 µm) were prepared from heat-pressed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), CAD/CAM-processed PMMA, and CAD/CAM-processed polyether ether ketone (PEEK). The specimens were randomly placed in the vestibular areas of complete upper dentures in seven patients and were removed either after 24 h without any oral hygiene measures or after a period of four weeks. The microorganisms adherent to the surface of the specimens were cultivated and subsequently analyzed using mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF). The means and standard deviations were calculated, and the data were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey post-hoc test where appropriate (α = 0.05). There was a significant increase (p ≤ 0.004) in the total bacterial counts (CFU/mL) between the first (24 h) and the second (four weeks) measurements. Regarding quantitative microbiological analyses, no significant differences between the various materials were identified. Respiratory microorganisms were detected in all samples at both measurement time points, with a large variance between different patients. Only after four weeks, Candida species were identified on all materials but not in all participants. Candida species and respiratory microorganisms accumulate on various denture base resins. While no significant differences were identified between the materials, there was a tendency towards a more pronounced accumulation of microorganisms on conventionally processed PMMA. Purpose: Herein, the bond strength (BS) of denture teeth to a denture base resin in a milled monolithic unit was investigated and compared with those of 3D printed teeth to a 3D printed denture base and prefabricated teeth to a heat-cured acrylic resin before and after thermocycling. Methods: Sixty specimens of a denture tooth attached to a cylindrical denture base were fabricated following ISO Standard 19736. Three fabrication techniques--3D printing, conventional compression molding, and milling using monolithic technology--were employed to mill teeth and denture base parts as a single unit. The BS was investigated before and after thermocycling. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction (a = 0.05). Results: Before thermocycling, the mean BS of the milled group was significantly higher than that of the conventional group (P = 0.002). The 3D printed group showed no statistically significant difference from the milled (P = 0.051) and conventional (P = 0.824) groups. After thermocycling, although the mean BS values of the milled (P = 0.00) and 3D printed (P = 0.01) groups were significantly higher than that of the conventional group, there was no significant difference between them (P = 0.226). Only the BS of the conventional group was significantly reduced by thermocycling (P = 0.00). Conclusions: The milled monolithic fabrication technique, which eliminates the need for a bonding step, offered a promising combination of high-precision digital fabrication and a significantly high BS. This study aimed to investigate the association between denture use, chewing ability, and cognitive function in Korean middle-aged adults, using samples representing middle-aged people at the national level. This longitudinal study included 9998 middle-aged adults using the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging 7th special survey data. Denture use, chewing ability, health-related factors, and general characteristics were assessed using the Computer-Assisted Personal Interview. After controlling for general characteristics using a generalized estimating equation model, the association of denture use and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores with the chewing ability of those with or without dentures and MMSE scores were analysed. Among them, 24% of participants wore dentures, and 35.1% complained of difficulty chewing when wearing dentures. Among the participants who did not wear dentures, 16.4% complained of difficulty chewing. MMSE scores were lower among denture wearers than non-denture wearers (β = −0.026, p < 0.001). In both groups, MMSE scores decreased with chewing difficulty and were significantly reduced among non-denture wearers (p < 0.05). Chewing ability was closely associated with cognitive functioning. Therefore, in order to prevent cognitive decline, chewing discomfort while wearing dentures must be eliminated, and oral health must be maintained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of dentures with dietary advice and dentures alone on protein intake in older Thai adults. Background: Dentures combined with nutritional advice may improve protein intake in older adults with posterior tooth loss. However, evidence is limited, especially in developing countries. Methods: A randomised‐control trial including 69 older adults with less than four pairs of posterior occluding teeth was conducted for 3 months. The experimental group received dentures and dietary advice based on the Health Belief Model (HBM); the control group received dentures alone. Three‐day dietary records were collected and protein intake was assessed using INMUCAL‐NUTRIENTS V.4.0 software at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months after the intervention. Data were analysed using a t‐test, Mann–Whitney U test, chi‐square test, and repeated‐measure ANOVA. Results: Both groups reported significantly increased protein intake (control group = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6 g kg BW−1 d−1, intervention = 0.4, 0.6, 0.7 g kg BW−1 d−1, at baseline, 1 month and 3 months, respectively). However, participants in the experimental group had significantly higher total protein (36.3 vs. 39.8 g/d, P =.032) and animal protein intake (18.9 vs. 23.2 g/day, P =.020) than those in the control group at 3 months after the intervention; plant protein intake was similar (10.9 vs. 11.5 g/day, P =.923). In addition, the HBM scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group after the intervention (P <.001). Conclusion: Dentures combined with dietary advice significantly increased the total and animal protein intake of older people with posterior tooth loss more than dentures alone. Purpose: An interdisciplinary clinical review on denture stomatitis formulated by experts from prosthodontics, oral medicine, and oral microbiology is presented. The review outlines the etiopathogenesis, clinical features, and management strategies of denture stomatitis from an interdisciplinary perspective. Materials and methods: English‐language articles relating to the definition, incidence, gender distribution, geographical distribution, etiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, signs, treatment, and prognosis of denture stomatitis were retrieved via electronic literature search. Relevant articles were summarized for this manuscript with a view toward providing pragmatic information. Results: Denture stomatitis represents a very common, multifactorial infectious, inflammatory, and hyperplastic condition which is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene, poor denture hygiene, and full‐time; mainly night‐time denture wear, bringing about the emergence of advanced Candida‐containing polymicrobial biofilms in close proximity to the host's mucosal tissues. Denture stomatitis shares clinically relevant associations with dental caries, periodontitis, median rhomboid glossitis, angular cheilitis, aspirational pneumonia, and associated mortality. Conclusions: Effective, long‐term treatment of denture stomatitis relies upon sustained patient‐driven behavioral change which should focus on daily prosthesis‐level cleaning and disinfection, removal of dentures at night, every night, engagement with professional denture maintenance, and when required, denture replacement. Antifungal medications offer limited benefits outside of short‐term use due to the emergence of antifungal resistance. For frail, older, medically compromised, and nursing home populations, treatment of denture stomatitis lowers the risk of aspirational pneumonia and associated mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Oral health is essential to total health and a satisfactory quality of life. One of the most contributing factors is how a human being has an understanding of how to maintain oral health to improve the quality and well-being of life. Purpose: to provide and describe the community knowledge about the importance of replacing missing teeth using dentures and maintaining oral health to improve the quality of life. Methods: The event was carried out with an interactive educational concept by giving pre- and post-tests at the beginning and end of the event. There were at least 80 education participants, consisting of the people of Sekarkare village of various ages, from late adolescents to the elderly, along with village officials and guests from the Sekarkare Health Center. The activity was carried out at the village hall of Sekarkare Village, Dringu District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java Results: The majority of people understand and are enthusiastic about participating in a series of counseling events. There is an increase in scores in the pre-test (59,06%) and post-test (65,58%) results. Conclusion: The existence of counseling events with interactive educational concepts can increase public enthusiasm for participating in events, making it easier for people to gain new knowledge. Objectives: This study investigated the surface characteristics of denture base resin coatings prepared using a novel silica-based film containing hinokitiol and assessed the effect of this coating on Candida albicans adhesion and growth. Methods: Silica-based coating solutions (control solution; CS) and CS containing hinokitiol (CS-H) were prepared. C. albicans biofilm formed on denture base specimens coated with each solution and these uncoated specimens (control) were analyzed using colony-forming unit (CFU) assay, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimen surfaces were analyzed by measuring the surface roughness and wettability and with Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Stability of coated specimens was assessed via immersion in water for 1 week for each group (control-1w, CS-1w, and CS-H-1w) followed by CFU assay, measurement of surface roughness and wettability, and FT-IR. Results: CS-H and CS-H-1w contained significantly lower CFUs than those present in the control and control-1w, which was also confirmed via SEM. Fluorescence microscopy from the CS-H group identified several dead cells. The values of surface roughness from coating groups were significantly less than those from the control and control-1w. The surface wettability from all coating groups exhibited high hydrophobicity. FT-IR analyses demonstrated that specimens were successfully coated, and 1H NMR analyses showed that hinokitiol was incorporated inside CS-H. Conclusions: A silica-based denture coating that incorporates hinokitiol inhibits C. albicans growth on denture. Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogenic agent due to its ability to cause various types of infections, ranging from mild skin infections to sever systemic diseases. One of the most virulence factors of this bacterium is its ability to from biofilms on solid surfaces by anchoring the planktonic cells and by producing a protective layer of extra polymeric substances. Biofilm formation is controlled through many genes. The most important ones are icaA and icaD. Dentures are prosthetic devices that are made of different materials to replace lost teeth. The aim of this study is to examine the ability of different types of denture materials to support the biofilm formation of S. aureus at phenotypic level by detecting bacterial growth on them using crystal violet and scanning electron microscope, as well as genotypic level through detection and estimation of gene icaA and icaD expression. • The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between tooth loss, removable denture usage, and the progression of the Frailty Index, considering the Frailty Index as a time-variant variable. • Tooth loss is associated with a more rapid progression of frailty over time amongst adults in England. • Professionals should consider that maintaining teeth may be effective for suppressing frailty progression. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between indicators of oral health status (number of teeth; denture use) and the progression of frailty amongst adults in England. The subjects were participants of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging [ELSA] aged 50 years and older. We used panel data from three waves of the study (Waves 7–9). Indicators of oral health comprised the number of teeth (≥20; 10–19; 1–9; 0) and combination of removable denture usage and the number of teeth. Frailty was assessed by the 32-item Frailty Index (FI). Covariates were age, sex, education, marital status, smoking, alcohol, and physical activity. The longitudinal relationship between oral health indicators and change in FI were investigated using linear mixed-effect models considering frailty as a time-varying variable. Among the 7,557 participants, compared to those people with 20 or more teeth, change in frailty over time was significantly higher among those with less than 20 teeth: 10–19 teeth (β: 0.249, 95 %CI: 0.116 to 0.382), and 1–9 teeth (β: 0.238, 95 %CI: 0.053 to 0.423) and being edentate (β: 0.286, 95 %CI: 0.106 to 0.465) when adjusting for co-variates. The rise in frailty over time was significantly higher among those with fewer teeth (<20 teeth), including those using dentures. This longitudinal analysis suggests that tooth loss is associated with accelerated progression of frailty and utilizing dentures did not reduce the trend in frailty. Swallowing a foreign body is one of the reasons of patients' urgent referral to the hospital. Proper diagnostics allows visualization of the swallowed object and planning of treatment, including endoscopy and surgery. Due to the possibility of potentially life-threatening complications following pharyngeal and esophageal foreign body extraction procedures, the patient should always be carefully monitored for symptoms suggesting adverse events for further appropriate diagnostic and management. We present a case report of a 47-year-old patient who, after successful endoscopic removal of a large denture from the hypopharynx, was found to have a perforation of the left piriform recess. The possibility of tooth loss may increase as we get older. Missing teeth in the posterior area will reduce the number of occlusal support zones and cause changes in the masticatory function. These changes may impact general health and affect the quality of life, leading to a person needing some form of denture care. How the need for care turns into a person's demand is influenced by factors such as knowledge, attitude, and practice. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice towards denture demand in the pre-elderly and elderly associated with sociodemographic factors. A cross-sectional study with saturation sampling was conducted on 82 subjects over 45 who attended community service at the public health center on Panggang Island, Kepulauan Seribu. An oral examination was performed to determine the number of remaining occlusal support zones (Eichner classification). Oral health knowledge, attitude, and practice questionnaire, followed by a denture demand sheet, were given to assess their level of oral health knowledge, attitude, practice, and demand for denture treatment. Sociodemographic data (age, gender, education, and economic status) were also collected in this study. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. This study found that oral health knowledge gave a statistically significant difference in denture demand (p = 0.000), economic status (p = 0.015), and the number of occlusal support zones (p = 0.022). A statistically significant difference was also seen between oral health practice and education level (p = 0.033). In conclusion, oral health knowledge has a relationship with denture demand, economic status, and the number of occlusal support zones. Polymers remain an integral part of denture fabrication materials, specifically polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA). PMMA has been extensively used, particularly in construction as a denture base material. Nonetheless, various challenges, including microbial threats in the form of candidiasis occurrence, still remain a biological challenge to denture wearers. The present article comprehensively reviews the biomodifications introduced to denture components, in particular denture base material, to improve the overall biological properties, together with physical, mechanical, structural integrity, and optical properties. In addition, fundamental information specifically to PMMA as a conventional denture base material and the causative aetiological microbial agents for biological threat to dentures are explored.
