If one could be a patient repeatedly, every twenty-five years, starting in 1825, the evolution and comparison of dental care and dental practice would be historically meaningful. Such a time travel, as a perpetual patient through 200 years, is the purpose of this paper. The changes that occurred over 200 years provide a sense of the progress in treating patients and the transformation of a painful and dreaded experience to a highly sophisticated painless profession., (Copyright 2023 © American Academy of the History of Dentistry.)

Throughout history, Osijek and Slavonia were parts of numerous empires and states. In this paper, the authors depict dental health care of the inhabitants of Osijek and Slavonia throughout their history, since the ancient prehistoric times when dental medicine and medicine in general were 'in the hands' of gods and medicine men, throughout the period of the Roman Empire and Middle Ages, as well as the Turkish sovereignty, all the way to the modern era when Osijek and Slavonia became part of the Austrian Empire and many novelties were introduced in the society, among other things, and for those times, modern procedures of medicine and dental protection. Those were the true beginnings of medicine and dental protection. The authors illustrate the work of various 'dentists' who worked in Osijek, from military and town surgeons, barbers, and especially the work of doctors that needed to have formal school and specialist education after the reforms implemented in the 19 th century. Thanks to the reforms of the Austrian, and later the Austrian-Hungarian authorities, the practice and work of people who were allowed to perform dental procedures started being regulated, prices were established, and punishments introduced for those who performed dental procedures without having the proper qualifications.

Equine dentistry has been practiced for almost 3000 years, making it one of the oldest areas of equine health care. Progress has been slow and mirrored changes seen in human medical care. Many horsemen practiced equine dentistry during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Most of what was known then concentrated on sharp enamel points and abnormal dental occlusal wear. This changed slowly in the late twentieth century as research in equine dentistry increased. Today, veterinarians performing equine dentistry focus on detailed oral examination and base treatment for proper diagnosis of orthodontic, endodontic, periodontal, or other forms of dental disease., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. The career of André Schroeder (1918–2004), Professor of Operative Dentistry and Endodontics at the University of Bern, and long-term Editor in Chief of the Schweizerische Monatsschrift für Zahnheilkunde (predecessor of the Swiss Dental Journal SSO), is unique in many respects. Forty years ago, in 1979, Schroeder reached the zenith of his career when he was elected President (Rector) of the University of Bern – thereby becoming the first dentist in Swiss academic history to hold this office. Previously, Schroeder had also been the first dentist to become Full Professor (Ordinarius) and, later, Dean of the Medical Faculty. At the same time, Schroeder founded the International Team of Implantology (ITI), which evolved into the largest global organization of Implant Dentistry. The present article uses these anniversaries as an opportunity to (1) retrace Schroeder’s career path, (2) contextualize this career path using the education policy in place at the time, and (3) clarify to what extent and by which means the pioneer Schroeder influenced the professionalization of Academic Dentistry in Switzerland. This study draws upon primary sources from the University and City Archives of Bern and the archive of the ITI; these were supplemented by relevant secondary literature. An evaluation of the sources clearly shows that Schroeder was a trailblazer in many ways: Firstly, he exploited his university positions with the primary goal of furthering the basis of Academic Dentistry. Secondly, he promoted Swiss Dentistry through his non-university activities – as the successful Editor of the Schweizerische Monatsschrift fu?r Zahnheilkunde and founder of the ITI. And thirdly, Schroeder specifically addressed the increasing relevance of Dentistry for society as a whole by intertwining the two most important arguments – the scientific orientation and the benefits for public health – in a rhetorically accomplished manner.

Over the past 100 y, tremendous progress has been made in the fields of dental tissue engineering and regenerative dental medicine, collectively known as translational dentistry. Translational dentistry has benefited from the more mature field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM), established on the belief that biocompatible scaffolds, cells, and growth factors could be used to create functional, living replacement tissues and organs. TERM, created and pioneered by an interdisciplinary group of clinicians, biomedical engineers, and basic research scientists, works to create bioengineered replacement tissues that provide at least enough function for patients to survive until donor organs are available and, at best, fully functional replacement organs. Ultimately, the goal of both TERM and regenerative dentistry is to bring new and more effective therapies to the clinic to treat those in need. Very recently, the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research invested $24 million over a 3-y period to create dental oral and craniofacial translational resource centers to facilitate the development of more effective therapies to treat edentulism and other dental-related diseases over the next decade. This exciting era in regenerative dentistry, particularly for whole-tooth tissue engineering, builds on many key successes over the past 100 y that have contributed toward our current knowledge and understanding of signaling pathways directing natural tooth and dental tissue development-the foundation for current strategies to engineer functional, living replacement dental tissues and whole teeth. Here we use a historical perspective to present key findings and pivotal advances made in the field of translational dentistry over the past 100 y. We will first describe how this process has evolved over the past 100 y and then hypothesize on what to expect over the next century.

This study aimed to determine the number and quality of scientific publications in dentistry from the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia between 1996 and 2018 using bibliometric analysis. Web of Science and Scopus were searched to identify scientific publications in dentistry between 1996 and 2018 by authors from centers in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The annual number of scientific publications, citation rate, and h-index for each publication, and trends in international co-authorship were investigated by country and institution. There were 651 scientific publications in dentistry between 1996 and 2018, by authors from Lithuania (280 publications), Latvia (210 publications), and Estonia (161 publications). Publications from Estonia were ranked highest in qualitative terms (citation rate and h-index), followed by Lithuania, and Latvia. Of 28 authors with at least ten publications, 54% were Lithuanian (15 authors), 25% were Estonian (7 authors), and 21% were Latvian (6 authors). Estonian authors collaborated mainly with Finland (27 publications), Latvian authors with the USA (16 publications), and Lithuanian authors with Canada (26 publications). Most publications came from the academic institutions of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (136 publications), the University of Tartu (109 publications), Vilnius University (101 publications), and Riga Stradins University (28 publications). During the past 22 years, authors from Lithuania had the most publications in the field of dentistry, and authors from Estonia had the most cited publications. Authors mainly published in native journals and collaborated with authors in Scandinavia and North America.

Better understanding of dental caries and other oral conditions has guided new strategies to prevent disease and manage its consequences at individual and public health levels. This article discusses advances in prevention and minimal intervention dentistry over the last century by focusing on some milestones within scientific, clinical, and public health arenas, mainly in cariology but also beyond, highlighting current understanding and evidence with future prospects. Dentistry was initially established as a surgical specialty. Dental caries (similar to periodontitis) was considered to be an infectious disease 100 years ago. Its ubiquitous presence and rampant nature-coupled with limited diagnostic tools and therapeutic treatment options-meant that these dental diseases were managed mainly by excising affected tissue. The understanding of the diseases and a change in their prevalence, extent, and severity, with evolutions in operative techniques, technologies, and materials, have enabled a shift from surgical to preventive and minimal intervention dentistry approaches. Future challenges to embrace include continuing the dental profession's move toward a more patient-centered, evidence-based, less invasive management of these diseases, focused on promoting and maintaining oral health in partnership with patients. In parallel, public health needs to continue to, for example, tackle social inequalities in dental health, develop better preventive and management options for existing disease risk groups (e.g., the growing aging population), and the development of reimbursement and health outcome models that facilitate implementation of these evolving strategies. A century ago, almost every treatment involved injections, a drill or scalpel, or a pair of forceps. Today, dentists have more options than ever before available to them. These are supported by evidence, have a minimal intervention focus, and result in better outcomes for patients. The profession's greatest challenge is moving this evidence into practice.

Objectives: The delivery of oral health services, diagnostics and treatment underwent significant changes in the 20th century thanks to achievements by pioneers in dentistry. The Golden Age of Dentistry in Vienna, Austria, was marked by renowned dentists like Bernhard Gottlieb in the 1930s. Data records from the outpatient department of this period have been found and served as a source from which to draw comparisons between those days and the present. To date, data supporting an overall perception of advances in dentistry during the last century in tooth preservation and patients' demands have been lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in treatments and patient characteristics between the interwar period and the present and to assess how treatments for dental emergencies developed., Methods: Patients' records were extracted from books handwritten from January to May 1933 and compared with electronically generated data from the same period in 2013. In total, patient data from 10 111 individuals (3878 in 1933 and 6233 in 2013) were analysed. Comparisons were undertaken for gender, age, place of residence, diagnosis and therapy., Results: Various statistically significant demographic and treatment differences were found between 1933 and 2013. Patients' mean ages in 2013 and 1933 were 42 and 31 years, respectively. In 2013, there were significantly more women than in 1933 (3378 vs 1936), with 54% women in 2013 and 50% women in 1933. In 2013, there were significantly fewer tooth extractions as dental emergency treatment than in 1933 (2% vs 34%)., Conclusions: Treatment in the outpatient department is much more conservative in the 21 st century. From the American West to the steppes of Eurasia, the domestic horse transformed human societies, providing rapid transport, communication, and military power, and serving as an important subsistence animal. Because of the importance of oral equipment for horse riding, dentistry is an essential component of modern horse care. In the open grasslands of northeast Asia, horses remain the primary form of transport for many herders. Although free-range grazing on gritty forage mitigates many equine dental issues, contemporary Mongolian horsemen nonetheless practice some forms of dentistry, including the removal of problematic deciduous teeth and the vestigial first premolar ("wolf tooth"). Here, we present archaezoological data from equine skeletal remains spanning the past 3,200 y, indicating that nomadic dental practices have great antiquity. Anthropogenic modifications to malerupted deciduous central incisors in young horses from the Late Bronze Age demonstrate their attempted removal, coinciding with the local innovation or adoption of horseback riding and the florescence of Mongolian pastoral society. Horse specimens from this period show no evidence of first premolar removal, which we first identify in specimens dating to ca. 750 BCE. The onset of premolar extraction parallels the archaeological appearance of jointed bronze and iron bits, suggesting that this technological shift prompted innovations in dentistry that improved horse health and horse control. These discoveries provide the earliest directly dated evidence for veterinary dentistry, and suggest that innovations in equine care by nomadic peoples ca. 1150 BCE enabled the use of horses for increasingly sophisticated mounted riding and warfare., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Background and Aim: Medical deontology is increasingly important, owing to the interests and rights which the medical profession involves. This paper focuses on the relationships of the Italian Code of Medical Deontology (CMD) with both the ethical and legal dimensions, in order to clarify the role of medical ethics within the medical profession, society and the overall system of the sources of law., Methods: The authors analyze the CMD from an ethical perspective and through the new doctrinal guidelines and current trends in the Italian law courts., Results: From an ethical point of view,  moral philosophical analysis scarcely seems to  address professional medical ethics. Nonetheless, the CMD needs to undergo careful ethical analysis. From a legal perspective, the Italian CMD contains provisions which do not have  an official legal nature. However, they are directly binding for medical practitioners, and therefore could be understood as a supplement to the general rules of the legal system., Conclusions: At an ethical level, rigorous debate on the CMD is indispensable, in order to update its specific principles and to make it a real moral normative document. At a legislative level, there is a possible contradiction between a legal system that does not take into account the CMD, but which then attributes significant importance to the violation of its rules.

Dental teams have been involved with child protection for over 40 years. This brief review summarises their involvement in the detection of various types of child abuse and goes on to discuss the gap between the proportions of dental professionals who suspect child abuse or neglect in their paediatric patients and those who refer such cases on. Potential reasons for this discrepancy are discussed, and a glimpse of the future is given as to where further research may be necessary to tackle this existing gap., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S. In 2009, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) was initiated. Its release of interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) core competencies in 2011 was pivotal for the engagement of health care professionals, including dentistry; in patient-centered, collaborative efforts for interprofessional education (IPE); and ICP. Thereby, IPEC is helping to put into application, in North America, the 2010 World Health Organization (WHO) Framework for Action on Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice. This article introduces IPE/ICP in 5 phases of evolution, emphasizing dental influence and inclusion, from historical perspectives through current applications that are expanded on in the accompanying articles elsewhere in this issue., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. For centuries only three professions were recognised as such: medicine, law and theology. Now that the word 'professional' is applied to all occupations it can be difficult to understand the meaning of professionalism within dentistry and healthcare. We simply cannot treat dentistry as a commodity or business when it is a highly specialised personal service. Now more than ever, dentistry is a team game and all dental professionals must maintain the values and codes that distinguish what we do from most other vocations.

Sir Thomas More's Ordinances can tell us much about London dental practice in the sixteenth century, providing an overview of training, development and practice within a healthcare service much like our own.

The author illustrates by the study of ancient texts the interest shown for equine dentistry since the age of times. The first detailed studies on the technique go back to the 17th century. The 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries were fertile in instrumental as well as technical discoveries; it was the time of creativity, and he quotes authors like Günther father and son, Frick, Goubaux and Barrier, Mérllat, Cadiot, and Colyer with his enormous work on animal dentistry published in 1936. During and right after the 2nd World War, it is the time of desertion, with only one exception, Erwin Becker, who out of Berlin gives an extraordinary prestige to the dentistry. The beginning of the revival seems to go back to 1975-1980. At this point of time, non veterinarian "dentists" breach in, the moust famous being Dale Jeffrey, who opens a school, creates an academy and publishes a newspaper. The author reviews all the existing teaching method. A new professions is born, the dental technician, one hurdle remains how to integrate it within the world of the veterinarians? The author presents the British example, the best regulated. He also shows how the French National Veterinary Schools have restored the teaching of dentistry. The author regrets that the Medias glorify the dental technicians under the pompous and improper trade name "equine dentists", to the detriment of the veterinarians.

In 2005, Dr. Jose Peralez won the ADA's Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Leadership. He is a second-career native of the Rio Grande Valley who returned after his 1995 graduation from dental school to serve the community he grew up in. Dr. Peralez helped to purchase, manage, and staff a mobile clinic, create a voucher program administered through school nurses, and engage legislators in issues of oral health care for the underserved. He believes that "habits of involvement" are cross generational and contagious.

This year's winner of the ADA award for Individual Achievement in Mentoring, Dr. Ronald Stifter explains how opportunities exist for established dentists to mentor students and young practitioners. In a changing professional world where competition, debt, and diversity have grown, the guidance of a mature dentist is a valuable way to invest in the future of the profession.

The collecting of stamps can be a rewarding exercise and may be as intense or as superficial as one would wish. Some collectors concentrate on the technical aspects of stamp production, whereas others concentrate on the details of their issue by the postal authorities. Others collect stamps with the view to buying and selling them for financial gain. Some are more interested in the "social" aspects of a stamp (e.g., facts about the country issuing it, location of the country, population, government structure, main industries, place of dentistry within the society). A collection of topical stamps on odontophilately with the details of those types listed above should stimulate anyone with the imagination to appreciate the wide and sometimes romantic stories behind every stamp.

The Etruscan gold dental appliances to women of means were a remarkable start of the application of inserted teeth. The Romans that followed paid great attention to the dental system and the poet Martialis is one of the first Roman writers who speaks clearly of artificial teeth. Celcus, with his medical writings in eminent Latin, made a nice contribution to dental surgery and some of the prescriptions and remedies of Scribonius Largus were fairly effectual. Dioskorides distributed a most comprehensive pharmacological guide presenting a great number of medical applications - some related to teeth and gums. Plinius collected a celebrated encyclopaedia on medicine and natural science crammed with all sort of facts - some absurd. The passages concerning teeth and gums has thus got a miscellaneous description of current folklore and more reliable treatments. Galenos, after Hippocrates the greatest physician of ancient times, was a prolific writer. He produced medical reference books covering all medical branches that became authoritative for nearly two thousand years and the portions of dental treatments are detailed. The Romans had a widespread interest of mouth-care with toothpicks, mouthwashes, pain relieving remedies, the use of instruments and in some cases constructions of false teeth - but no real explanation of caries.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the opinions of Dutch dentist professors about the main developments in dental science and Dutch dental care in the period 1900-2000 and their expectations for the coming 25 years. In the Dentist Directory of the Dutch Dental Association 51 professors were found of which 23 were still active; 45 were interviewed. The answers were categorized into 5 groups. The majority of the respondents (n = 31) mentioned as the most important development in dental science in the past century the gathered knowledge of the preventive effects of fluoride and the wide application of it in practice. The foundation of the dental health insurance in the Dutch National Health system was seen as the most significant development in Dutch dental care in this period (n = x32). More than half of the group (n = 26) was worried about the future demand of dentists and about the coming problems of supply and demand of dental care. It is concluded that the results of this study seem to be an accurate representation of the opinions of Dutch dentist professors on the main developments in dental science and Dutch dental care in the period 1900-2000. Respondents were pleased with the dental advances in the past century but they felt uneasy for the coming 25 years, especially concerning the issue of the availability of dental care for the majority of the Dutch population.

In this study, I explore the relationship between medicine and dentistry in Ontario between 1868 and 1918. Examination of the rise of dentistry and medical-dental relations reveals that medicine never came to dominate dentistry to the extent it did other health care occupations. The combination of four factors enabled dentistry to avoid outright medical dominance in Ontario. First, dentistry organized and professionalized at approximately the same time as did medicine in Ontario. Second, dentistry's jurisdiction remained somewhat separate from medicine's. Third, unlike other health care occupations, the dental profession never challenged medicine's claims to knowledge or expertise. Fourth, dental and medical leaders shared gender and class backgrounds, identities, and goals that discouraged conflict between them. The importance of these four factors and their implications for future research into inter-professional relations and medical dominance are discussed.

The context in which Hippocrates practiced is presented as an explanation for the content of the oath. Today oath-taking invokes respect for high principles shared among a community of practitioners even though the specifics of Hippocrates' code may be outdated or even unknown to many health professionals. More recent oaths particular to dentistry are also presented.
