BACKGROUND: Morphological and structural abnormalities are common dental anomalies. Identifying DA and determining their prevalence can play an important role in reducing the risk of surgical intervention and improving occlusion, leading to successful dental treatments. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of DA using panoramic radiographs (OPG) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia according to gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective radiographic investigation was performed, and the digital OPG of 923 patients (age range, 8–27 years) were collected. Records were collected from patients admitted at a government hospital in Makkah between January 2020 and DA in terms of tooth shape (microdontia, macrodontia, gemination, and fusion), number (supernumerary and congenitally missing teeth), and position (impaction and ectopic eruption). Several other abnormalities, such as ankyloses, dens in dents, dilacerations, and taurodontism, have also been reported. Digital radiographs from patients were systematically evaluated to diagnose each radiograph with consistent screen brightness and resolution. RESULTS: The most prevalent DA were impaction (53.8%), hypodontia (13.6%), microdontia (8.2%), and ectopic eruption (6.7%). Taurodontism was observed more frequently in male compared to female (7.5% and 2.2%, respectively). However, there was no significant difference between gender in the distribution of other DA. CONCLUSION: This study found that 27.8% of the Saudi population of Makkah city have DA. Clinical examination and radiographic evaluation are crucial for providing the proper treatment for patients seeking dental treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Pattern of dental anomalies encountered in cleft patients shows subtle signs of genetic involvement. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of tooth agenesis and supernumerary teeth in Thai cleft population according to the cleft type. Methods Data collected from patients with cleft lip and palate, who had been treated at Tawanchai Cleft Center, Khon Kaen University, Thailand, available during year 2012–2022, were investigated. Records from 194 patients with non-syndromic clefts met the inclusion criteria. Standard dental records, and at least either orthopantomogram (OPG) or cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), were examined. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square and binominal test (p ≤ 0.05). Results Prevalence of tooth agenesis was higher (77.3%) than that of supernumerary teeth (5.7%) and was more common in bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) (88.1%) than in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) (72.6%) (p = 0.017). The upper lateral incisor was more frequently affected (46.4%), followed by the upper second premolar. The number of missing teeth observed on the left side was significantly higher. Patients with left UCLP (ULCLP) had the highest prevalence of tooth agenesis. A total of 41 tooth agenesis code (TAC) patterns was found. The prevalence of supernumerary teeth was comparable with 6.6% of ULCLP, 5.1% of BCLP, and 4.5% of URCLP. Tooth-number anomalies were observed more often in the BCLP and were most likely to occur on the left side of the maxilla. Both types of anomalies could be featured in a small proportion of cleft patients. Conclusions More than half of the patients with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate in this study, presented with tooth-number anomalies. Tooth agenesis was approximately 10-time more prevalent than supernumerary teeth. Tooth agenesis was likely to appear on the left-side of the maxilla regardless of the laterality of the cleft.

Objective: Dental anomalies (DA) can affect paediatric patients' aesthetics, function, and psychological well-being. There is a lack of data about the prevalence of DA in children in Kuwait. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and distribution of DA amongst schoolchildren aged 8 to 12 years. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted using panoramic digital radiographs of children who attended a single dental center. All radiographs were evaluated by 2 calibrated and trained examiners. Results: DA were present in 110 (20.1%) out of the 546 panoramic radiographs examined: 53.6% in females and 46.4% in males. The mean age of children with DA (9.83 ± 1.29) was similar to that of children with no anomalies (9.96 ± 1.46). The most prevalent anomaly was dental agenesis (9.3%), followed by taurodontism (6.6%) and ectopic eruption (EE, 2%). DA were more common in the maxilla (58.2%) compared to the mandible (41.8%, P = .042). Congenitally missing teeth were significantly more frequent in the mandible (56.9%) than in the maxilla (43.1%, P = .003). EE was significantly more common in the maxilla (90.9%) than in the mandible (9.1%, P = .024). Microdontia and root dilacerations were only present in males, whilst supernumerary teeth, transposition, and impacted teeth were noted in females only. Conclusions: The prevalence of DA amongst schoolchildren in Kuwait was considered to be relatively high. Certain DA were associated with gender. The significant prevalence of DA highlights the need for early diagnosis using panoramic radiographs, particularly during the ages of 9 and 10, in order to ensure effective patient management.

Abstract Background Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder. Besides skeletal abnormalities, CCD is often associated with dental complications, such as multiple supernumerary teeth and permanent teeth impaction or delayed eruption. Methods Supernumerary teeth of axial, sagittal and coronal CBCT view was characterized in detail and 3D image reconstruction was performed. Number and location of teeth, morphology of supernumerary teeth, positional relationship between supernumerary and adjacent permanent teeth, direction of supernumerary teeth in CCD patients were analyzed. Results The mean age of the 3 CCD patients in this study was 16.7 years. Among 36 supernumerary teeth, the majority of them were identified as apical side located and lingual side located. Normal orientation was the most common type in this study, followed by sagittal orientation, and horizontal orientation. Horizontal orientation teeth were all distributed in the mandible. Odontodysplasia is an uncommon dental developmental disorder associated with enamel, dentin, pulp abnormalities, and overall tooth morphology. The affected tooth is grossly abnormal in size and contour and is commonly associated with swelling of the affected area and failure of eruption. Histologically, the enamel and dentin are hypoplastic and hypomineralized. Odontodyplasia occurs most commonly in response to direct trauma to the developing tooth bud (enamel organ and dental follicle). Data on the prevalence and features of non-traumatic odontodysplasia are lacking. Medical records of dogs diagnosed with odontodysplasia were reviewed at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), University of California, Davis, for 10 years (from 2013 to 2023). Dogs with a known history of facial trauma, persistent deciduous tooth or teeth over the region of odontodysplastic tooth or teeth, and endodontic disease of the persistent deciduous tooth or teeth were excluded from the study. Twenty-eight dogs were included in this retrospective study, representing an incidence of 1.4 per 100 dogs presenting over 10 years. Regional odontodysplasia (RO) was identified in twenty-two dogs, and generalized odontodysplasia (GO) was found in six dogs. Both comprehensive oral examination and diagnostic imaging were essential in diagnosing and assessing the presence of odontodysplasia. Awake oral examination failed to identify odontodysplasia in almost 70% of the RO cases. Secondary diseases or lesions in odontodysplastic teeth, such as periodontal disease, endodontal disease, and perio-endo lesions, were commonly seen and were particularly more frequently identified in strategic teeth (canine and carnassial teeth) than non-strategic ones. Similarities, such as female predilection, maxilla more commonly affected, and clinical signs, were observed between RO in dogs and those reported in people. Abstract Objectives This study aimed to summarize the clinical features of non-syndromic late developing supernumerary teeth (LDST) and comparisons with common supernumerary teeth (ST) and explore the association between LDST and the third dentition. Materials and methods This study retrospected cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and medical history of 41,903 consecutive patients from January to December 2021. Comparisons between ST and LDST were evaluated by Chi-square test or Fisher exact test. Correlation between chronological age and dental stage age was evaluated by Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to explore the features of LDST originating from the third dentition. Results Sixty patients with 126 non-syndromic LDST and 1602 patients with 1988 non-syndromic ST were identified. The prevalence of ST and LDST was 3.82% and 0.14%, respectively, with a male-female ratio of 1.78:1 and 1.31:1. LDST patients mainly had LDST in multiple (58.33%) and bilaterally (41.67%), with an average of 2.1/patient. Most LDST were normal-shaped (84.13%), vertically oriented (71.43%), located in the mandible (80.16%), and distributed in the premolar region (82.54%). The study also indicated that the development of LDST was correlated with permanent teeth, with LDST developing 6.48 to 10.45 years later. In this study, 72.22% of LDST met the clinical criteria for the third dentition. Conclusions LDST manifested different clinical features from common ST. LDST might be closely related to the third dentition. Clinical relevance This work would help to comprehend LDST from a clinical perspective, and may be complementary to the criteria of the third dentition.

Supernumerary teeth are formed due to disturbances during the developmental stages of a tooth. The prevalence of supernumerary teeth is higher in the maxilla than the mandible and shows a predilection for the male gender. They may also demonstrate a familial tendency. Such teeth may lead to complications like impaction/altering the eruption path of adjacent teeth, as well as an increased risk of pathologies. Management of these extra teeth is mandated as and when they have been screened, identified, and noted to damage the adjacent teeth or other dentoalveolar structures. This case report presents an extremely rare case of distomolars in all four quadrants in a non-syndromic patient with no positive familial history.

This article discusses a case report on the treatment of multiple-tooth agenesis, retention, and impaction. It explains the causes and diagnostic methods for maxillary canine impaction and presents three treatment options. The article also discusses the best approach for treating patients with maxillary lateral-incisor agenesis. The treatment resulted in satisfactory esthetics and dental alignment. Abstract Background Nance–Horan syndrome (NHS; MIM 302,350) is an extremely rare X-linked dominant disease characterized by ocular and dental anomalies, intellectual disability, and facial dysmorphic features. Case presentation We report on five affected males and three carrier females from three unrelated NHS families. In Family 1, index (P1) showing bilateral cataracts, iris heterochromia, microcornea, mild intellectual disability, and dental findings including Hutchinson incisors, supernumerary teeth, bud-shaped molars received clinical diagnosis of NHS and targeted NHS gene sequencing revealed a novel pathogenic variant, c.2416 C > T; p.(Gln806*). In Family 2, index (P2) presenting with global developmental delay, microphthalmia, cataracts, and ventricular septal defect underwent SNP array testing and a novel deletion encompassing 22 genes including the NHS gene was detected. In Family 3, two half-brothers (P3 and P4) and maternal uncle (P5) had congenital cataracts and mild to moderate intellectual deficiency. P3 also had autistic and psychobehavioral features. Dental findings included notched incisors, bud-shaped permanent molars, and supernumerary molars. Duo-WES analysis on half-brothers showed a hemizygous novel deletion, c.1867delC; p.(Gln623ArgfsTer26). Conclusions Dental professionals can be the first-line specialists involved in the diagnosis of NHS due to its distinct dental findings. Our findings broaden the spectrum of genetic etiopathogenesis associated with NHS and aim to raise awareness among dental professionals.

Background: Supernumerary teeth are a dental anomaly that can impact oral health, yet their prevalence and characteristics in pediatric populations remain underexplored. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the occurrence and attributes of supernumerary teeth in children aged 4–14 years. Methods: Medical records including panoramic radiographs of 3127 pediatric patients were reviewed. Data included patient demographics and supernumerary tooth characteristics (number, location, eruption status, morphology, primary/permanent, sagittal position, and orientation) and were subjected to statistical analysis using Fisher's exact and Chi-square tests (P < 0.05). Results: Among the 3127 patients, 87 (2.8%) showed supernumerary teeth, with a male predominance (56.3%). Supernumeraries were most common in the mixed dentition (58.6%), followed by permanent dentition (26.5%) and primary dentition (14.9%). The majority had a single supernumerary tooth (83.9%), resulting in a total of 101 supernumeraries. Conical supernumeraries were the most common (65.3%), followed by tuberculate (20.8%) and supplemental (13.9%) types. Palatal placement was predominant (78.2%), whereas 18.8% were on the alveolar arch, and 3% were labial. Most were normally oriented (78.2%), with 13.9% inverted and 7.9% angular. Eruption status indicated that 63.4% were erupted, whereas the rest were impacted. Conclusion: This retrospective study revealed a 2.8% prevalence of supernumerary teeth among pediatric patients, with a male predominance.

Abstract Background Orofacial clefts are characterized by a frequent occurrence of dental anomalies. Numerous studies demonstrate the high prevalence of dental aplasia, supernumerary teeth, and hypoplastic teeth in patients with cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P), yet the therapeutic consequences are rarely discussed. This study explores prevalence, localization, and association between primary and secondary dentition in a large European collective and begins to evaluate the significance of dental anomalies in the therapeutic course of patients with CL/P. Methods The medical reports of 1070 patients with different entities of CL/P who presented to our clinic within a 15-year investigation period were evaluated retrospectively. Dental anomalies were classified into three different diagnostic groups: dental aplasia, supernumerary teeth and hypoplastic teeth. The statistical analyses included studies of the frequency and localization of dental anomalies in different cleft entities as well as of the association between primary and secondary dentition and the therapeutic consequences. Results Uni- or bilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP) (47.5%) occurred most frequently, followed by cleft palate only (CPO) (32.9%) and cleft lip with or without alveolus (CL ± A) (19.6%). Dental anomalies were found significantly more often on the side of the cleft. Aplastic permanent teeth were mostly found in patients with CLP (54.8%), while supernumerary permanent teeth occurred primarily in patients with CL ± A (21.7%). Patients with CPO presented dental aplasia but no patient with CPO showed supernumerary teeth. The occurrence of dental aplasia in the primary dentition significantly increases the probability of aplastic teeth in the permanent dentition. Dental anomalies, in particular dental aplasia, significantly increase patients’ need for subsequent orthodontic therapy and orthognathic surgery. Conclusion Dental aplasia and hypoplasia are common in patients with CL/P not only in the cleft area but in the whole dentition. In the event of dental aplasia in the primary dentition, the frequency of aplastic teeth in the permanent dentition is significantly higher. Additionally, the need for therapeutic interventions, especially concerning orthognathic surgery, seems to be significantly higher in patients with CL/P who are affected by dental anomalies. Clinicians should take this into account when creating long-term treatment plans.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı bir grup çocuk ve ergen hastada teşhis edilen gömülü süpernümerer dişlerin karakteristiğini konik ışınlı bilgisayarlı tomografi (KIBT) ile incelenmesidir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Pedodontik muayene sonrası teşhis ya da tedavi nedeniyle KIBT görüntüleri alınmış 6-17 yaş aralığındaki hastalar çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Görüntülerde saptanan süpernümerer dişler Ağız Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi Uzmanı tarafından üç boyutlu olarak incelenmiştir. Hastaların demografik özellikleri kaydedilmiştir. Süpernümerer diş pozisyonu, lokalizasyonu, şekli ve süpernümerer dişlerin neden olduğu komplikasyonlar değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: 116’sı (%56,9) erkek, 88’i (%43,1) kız toplam 204 çocuğun 338 KIBT sonucu incelenmiştir. Çocukların yaş ortalaması 10.69±2,65’tir. İncelenen 204 çocuğun 91’ inde (%44,6) toplam 123 adet gömülü süpernümerer diş teşhis edilmiştir. 60 (%66) çocukta sadece tek bir gömülü süpernümerer diş gözlenirken 31 (%34) çocukta 2 ya da daha fazla sayıda süpernümerer diş saptanmıştır. Süpernümerer dişlerin çoğu üst ön bölgede (%82,1) görülmüş ve %69,1’i palatinalde yer almıştır. Sonuç: KIBT, süpernümerer dişlerin konumu, komşu anatomik yapıları ve lokal komplikasyonları hakkında 2 boyutlu görüntüleme tekniklerine göre daha detaylı bilgi sağlayarak cerrahi işlem sırasında meydana gelebilecek komplikasyonları önlemeye yardımcı olmaktadır. İlerleyen dönemlerde ortodontik problemlere yol açmaması amacıyla, özellikle çocuk hastalarda süpernümerer dişlerle ilişkili komplikasyonların önlenebilmesi için erken teşhis ve uygun tedavi planlaması yapılması çok önemlidir.

Abstract Background Supernumerary teeth are considered one of the commonly observed dental anomalies in children. Several theories have been proposed to explain the presence of supernumerary teeth, including environmental and genetic factors. This study aimed to identify the different risk factors and molecular biomarkers in patients presented with supernumerary teeth. Methods This case–control study included 240 children, 6 to 12-year-old. They were divided into a test group (n = 120 children presented with supernumerary teeth) and a control group (n = 120 children with no supernumerary teeth). Questionnaires were distributed to assess demographics and exposure to several environmental factors. Ten extracted supernumerary teeth from the test group were processed for histopathological analysis. Results Male gender, dental history of severe oral infection or medical history of chemotherapy treatment, previous history of taking medication or illness during pregnancy, family history of neoplastic disorders, use of electronic devices, and living beside agricultural fields or industrial areas were found to be statistically significant associated with the risk of supernumerary teeth development. Immunohistochemistry panel revealed that supernumerary teeth showed enhanced expression of wingless (Wnt) and sonic hedgehog (SHH) proteins as well as a reduced expression of adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) protein, denoting molecular derangement in a group of pathways classically believed to be involved in its pathogenesis. Conclusions Males were more frequently affected by supernumerary teeth than females. Several risk factors were notably correlated with the existence of supernumerary teeth. Additionally, molecular biomarkers assessment demonstrated a high expression level of pro-tumorigenic proteins such as Wnt and SHH in patients with supernumerary teeth.

Purpose: The low frequency of concomitant hypo-hyperdontia and the lack of established clinical protocols in treatment are our motives to analyse our experience in three different clinical cases and derive principles of clinical behaviour. Material and methods: Analysis of the documentation of the 2886 patients, from which three clinical cases were with CHH: case 1 – agenesis of the second upper primary molars and hyperdontia of the upper left lateral; case 2 – Hyperdontia of the upper primary and permanent left lateral and hypodontia of the lower left second premolar; case 3 - two supernumerary (left and right) canines and hypodontia of the lower right second premolar. Results: From all the patients diagnosed and treated by us, hypodontia was found in 7.38% (excluding third molar hypodontia); hyperdontia in 1.9% and only 0.1% have concomitant hypo-hyperdontia. In the three patients, hyperdontia occurs in the frontal segment, and the phenomenon of hypodontia covers the distal segments. Discussion: Following the treatment plans of all three clinical cases, the following stereotype is required as a treatment approach: Solving the problem of hyperdontia (extraction); Levelling dental arches; Solving the problem of hypodontia - placement of implants or closing the space; Retention. In practice, it is found that the solution starts with a relatively smaller problem - hyperdontia, especially in cases where we have access to these teeth. The more serious obstacle is hypodontia, which, if unilateral, leads to disruption of the occlusal ratios. Conclusion: CHH is a rare problem, and the treatment is long, and its favourable outcome depends on early diagnosis.

Supernumerary teeth may be encountered as an incidental finding on a radiograph. When impacted, they may be associated with clinical signs related to different problems such as failure of eruption, teeth displacement, root resorption or cystic lesions. They may occur in primary and permanent dentition, in both the maxilla and mandible and can be single or multiple in patients with syndromes. Mesiodens is the most commonly impacted tooth and appears between the central maxillary incisors in pediatric ages. Supernumerary teeth distal to the third molar are rare, usually impacted and referred to as a distomolar. A 46-year-old male consulted with the main complaint of pain on the left side of the maxilla. A panoramic radiograph revealed a right impacted maxillary fourth molar located posterior to the third molar associated with a pericoronal radiolucency. The supernumerary tooth was removed surgically under local anesthesia and the pericoronal lesion enucleated. Histopathological examination was consistent with the diagnosis of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted distomolar. Healing was uneventful, and the patients remained asymptomatic. The occurrence of an impacted maxillary distomolar is rare and even rarer the association with a dentigerous cyst.

Introduction: Patients with orofacial clefts are usually associated with various dental anomalies. These dental aberrations pose a clinical challenge in treatment planning. Thus, this investigation intends to find the prevalence rate of different types of dental anomalies and their correlation among nonsyndromic cleft patients. Methodology: Orthodontic records of 129 cleft patients classified into different cleft groups were assessed to evaluate the presence of different dental anomalies. Results: The most frequent dental anomaly found in Cleft patients was rotations followed by maxillary lateral incisor agenesis with a prevalence rate of 90.4% and 59.2%, respectively. Maxillary second premolar agenesis, peg-shaped laterals, mandibular second premolar agenesis, and supernumerary teeth showed prevalence rates as 25%, 21%, 7%, and 5%, respectively. There were significant differences in the overall distribution of maxillary lateral incisor agenesis and rotations between patients with Unilateral Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, Bilateral Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, Cleft Lip (CL), and Isolated Cleft Palate (ICP). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of dental anomalies like rotations and maxillary lateral incisor agenesis in different CL and palate patients, which were statistically significant. The presence of such anomalies can deteriorate the already existing functional problem and hence, the study of these anomalies and their treatment is an important step in the rehabilitation of such patients.

Background/Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of congenital dental number anomalies in the permanent dentition among a group of Turkish children in the Inner Aegean Region of Turkey.

Abstract Background The distribution of dental abnormalities among cleft patients concerning cleft type frequently poses ambiguity wherefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hypodontia and supernumerary teeth in an exemplary German cleft population dependent on the cleft type. Methods Radiographs and dental records of cleft patients, which had been treated and followed up in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Campus, Dresden, Germany (investigation period of 22 years) were evaluated concerning hypodontia and supernumerary teeth dependent on the cleft type. Out of 386 records, 108 patients met the inclusion criteria: non-syndromic cleft of the alveolus with or without palate (CL/P), at least one clear panoramic x-ray, sufficient dental records. Statistical analysis was performed using x-square and binominal test (p ≤ 0.05). Wolf‐Hirschhorn syndrome is a polymalformative chromosomal disorder caused by a deletion in the distal region of the short arm of chromosome 4. The disease is considered rare (1/50,000 births) and predominantly affects females (2:1). In addition to the characteristic facial phenotype ("Greek warrior helmet"), its clinical manifestations include epilepsy, developmental and psychomotor delay, intellectual disability, cardiac and respiratory complications, and eating problems. The most prevalent oral manifestations are hypodontia, delayed tooth eruption, morphological dental abnormalities, dental malocclusions, cleft lip/palate and ogival palate. Based on our clinical experience, Wolf‐Hirschhorn syndrome does not represent an absolute contraindication for any type of dental procedure. The feasibility of dental treatment will depend mainly on the degree of epilepsy control and on the level of collaboration, this latter conditioned by the severity of the intellectual disability and communication difficulties. Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare inherited disorder affecting dental and skeletal tissues. CCD usually has an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and common clinical features seen are aplastic or hypoplastic clavicles, late closure of fontanelle, open skull sutures, retained deciduous teeth, late eruption of permanent teeth and presence of multiple impacted supernumerary teeth. Here, we present a case of CCD in a female patient with positive family history. The diagnosis was confirmed clinically and radiographically. The newer radiographic advancement, CBCT was used to validate the radiographic findings.

Abstract Background Supernumerary teeth (ST) is defined as an additional number of teeth compared to the normal dental formula. The prevalence rate of ST varies from 0.5 to 3.8% in the permanent dentition. When ST located distal to the third molar is acclaimed as distomolar. Moreover, kissing molar is an extremely scarce condition of distomolars, pointed in the opposite direction in a single follicular space. Meanwhile, macrodontia is also a rare shape anomaly characterized by a large crown and tapering root. Case presentation A 22-year-old Chinese man presented a combination of kissing molars, maxillary bilateral supernumerary teeth and macrodontia. Radiographically, two maxillary bilateral distomolars located at the buccal side of adjacent third molars. One mandibular distomolar with the adjacent third molar was contacted by occlusal surfaces while roots were pointed oppositely, which could be diagnosed as KM. Furthermore, the left mandibular third molar can be inferred to be a macrodontia, characterized by a large crown and tapering root. After a thorough investigation, we excluded the possibilities of systemic diseases and genetic inheritance. However, the etiology of this rare combination deserves to be further explored. Conclusion The combination of kissing molars, maxillary bilateral supernumerary teeth and macrodontia is very rare, especially presented in the patient with no syndromes. As there were no complications with these conditions, long-term observation has been recommended for the patient. In addition, the true etiology need a further exploration.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Tooth agenesis is one of the most common dental anomalies; however, the concomitant occurrence of opposite dental numerical variation of hypohyperdontia is extremely rare. Objective: To report the successful orthodontic management of a patient with non-syndromic concomitant bilateral agenesis of mandibular canines and two midline inverted supernumerary maxillary teeth. Case report: 21-year-old female patient with a chief complaint of protrusive right maxillary central incisor. The patient was diagnosed with a mild Class II skeletal base, Angle Class III molar relationship and increased overjet associated with hypohyperdontia. Anterior open bite accompanied with tongue-thrusting habit were also observed. Two temporary anchorage devices (TADs) were implanted at the buccal side of the maxillary molar region to control vertical height. Anterior teeth retraction was done after extraction of the maxillary first premolars, to improve the excessive overjet. The treatment mechanics involved lingual brackets system for the maxillary arch and transpalatal arch for anchorage control. Results: The total active treatment period was 35 months. Acceptable occlusion with increased bite force and contact area as well as functional excursion were established without interference, following complex orthodontic treatment with premolar substitution. The resultant occlusion and a satisfactory facial profile were maintained after 29 months of retention. Conclusion: The present case report provides implications regarding the orthodontic treatment of hypohyperdontia-associated substitution for missing teeth as an effective option for improving aesthetic and functional aspects.

A supernumerary tooth is one that is additional to the normal series and can be found in any region of the dental arch. A distomolar, also called as “fourth molars,” is a supernumerary tooth that is positioned distal to third molars. Distomolar can be found completely erupted in the dental arch, or it could be partially or entirely impacted. This literature review attempts to highlight the prevalence, etiology, morphology, complications, and diagnosis of distomolars. Various literatures reveal that supernumerary teeth are more frequently seen in the maxilla with a male predilection and their prevalence in the permanent dentition has been approximated to range from 0.1% to 3.6%. A distomolar may have a normal morphology or have a much smaller dimension than adjacent third molars. Molariform (tuberculated) shape is most frequently observed by various authors in their studies. Distomolars are usually found impacted within the jaws and may lead to several complications. Even though the frequency of distomolars is low, dental surgeons should always be aware of the presence of distomolars during radiographic or clinical examinations. A thorough knowledge and information about this supernumerary entity may definitely provide a hope for an early detection and appropriated treatment planning so as to prevent or minimize any complications created by them.

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı 16-60 yaş arası Konya popülasyonundaki dental anomali görülme sıklığının digital panoramik radyografi ile değerlendirilmesidir.Gereç ve Yöntemler: Bu çalışma, 2017-2018 yıllarında Selçuk Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Ağız, Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi bölümüne muayene amaçlı gelen hastalardan rutin olarak alınan panoramik radyografi görüntüleri üzerinde retrospektif olarak planlanmıştır. Bu amaçla çalışmaya, 16-60 yaş arasında olan rastgele seçilen 1100 hastanın panoramik radyografi görüntüleri dâhil edildi. Çalışmaya travmatik yaralanmalar, damak yarığı, tüm sendromlar ve net olmayan radyografiler dâhil edilmedi. Ayrıca çok çeşitli morfoloji ve pozisyon varyasyonları gösteren üçüncü molar dişler de değerlendirme dışı bırakıldı. Görüntüler iki gözlemci tarafından dental anomali varlığına göre değerlendirildi.Bulgular: Değerlendirilen1100 hastada dental anomali görülme sıklığı % 6.90 (42 kadın 34 erkek toplam 76 hasta) olarak belirlendi. Bu çalışmada görülme sıklığı en yüksek olan anomali tipleri 45 bireyde (% 4.09) gözlenen gömülü kalma ve 19 bireyde (% 1.72) gözlenen sürnümerer diş olarak belirlenmiştir. 5 bireyde (% 0.45) amelogenezis imperfekta, 4 bireyde (% 0.36) dilaserasyon, 2 bireyde (% 0.18) geminasyon, 1 bireyde (% 0.09) ise dens in dente tespit edilmiştirSonuçlar: Dental anomali tipleri ve görülme sıklığı popülasyonlar arasında ve içinde büyük farklılıklar göstermektedir. Supernumerary teeth represent isolated dental abnormalities by dental excess occurring when the disruptive factor acts in the stage of dental formation (induction and proliferation). It may be the result of the intervention of some hereditary, phylogenetic, local factors (disturbing factors in the dental proliferation stage), but may appear as clinical manifestations in genetic syndromes (cleido-cranial dysplasia and Gardner's syndrome). It determines aesthetic, occlusal, periodontal, clinical and functional changes, the diagnosis of certainty being given by radiological investigations. Since supernumerary teeth do not affect the quality of the alveolar bone, the prognosis is favorable, and surgical (extraction) and orthodontic treatment restores the normal aesthetic and functional aspect of the dental-maxillar apparatus.

Dental anomalies are common congenital malformations that can occur either as isolated findings or as part of a syndrome. This review focuses on genetic causes of abnormal tooth development and the implications of these abnormalities for clinical care. As an introduction, we describe general insights into the genetics of tooth development obtained from mouse and zebrafish models. This is followed by a discussion of isolated as well as syndromic tooth agenesis, including Van der Woude syndrome (VWS), ectodermal dysplasias (EDs), oral-facial-digital (OFD) syndrome type I, Rieger syndrome, holoprosencephaly, and tooth anomalies associated with cleft lip and palate. Next, we review delayed formation and eruption of teeth, as well as abnormalities in tooth size, shape, and form. Finally, isolated and syndromic causes of supernumerary teeth are considered, including cleidocranial dysplasia and Gardner syndrome.

Anomalies in human dentition are some of the most common occurrences of congenital abnormalities. Present study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypodontia, hyperdontia and concomitant hypo-hyperdontia (CHH) among patients attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Dental Medicine clinics. Retrospective search was conducted on patients' clinical notes in AxiUm™. Search included using keywords such as "hypodontia", "hyperdontia", "supernumerary teeth" and "congenitally missing". Panoramic radiographs were used to confirm the hyperdontia, hypodontia or CHH for patients attending the UNLV SDM clinics from 2010 to 2018. Collected data were analyzed using the chi-square test. 1101 patients were populated using the keywords. From these populated patients, 186 had hyperdontia, 23 hypodontia, and 3 presented with CHH. The distribution of males and females was 54.7% and 45.3% respectively. Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, Caucasians and ethnically unspecified patients represented 43.39%, 14.25%, 3.30%, 8.02%, and 31.13%, respectively, of those patients with a dental anomaly. Hyperdontia was most common amongst Hispanic patients with 39.24%, followed by the unspecified patients at 32.8% as well as amongst males at 56.45% (P value of 0.03). Unidentifiable supplemental teeth were overall the greatest in number with the lower right premolars, tooth 44, being the most common. This was demonstrated in the Hispanic patients whereas within the African American patients a 4th molar was in excess. Hispanic patient population has a significant link to dental anomalies, specifically hyperdontia while the presence of the fourth molar was prominent among African American patients. Dentigerous cysts are defined as developmental odontogenic cysts, which surround the crown of an impacted tooth. It is caused by fluid accumulation between the reduced enamel epithelium and the enamel surface, resulting in a cyst with the tooth crown located within the lumen. This paper reviews the pathogenesis, clinical features and the behaviour of dentigerous cyst. It also presents a case of a slow growing, painless swelling in the maxillary incisal region of 3 years duration. Detailed clinical, radiological and histopathological investigations aided the definitive diagnosis of dentigerous cyst. The cystic mass was enucleated with the impacted tooth in situ under local anesthesia. The operative site healed uneventfully and a removable partial denture was fabricated to improve aesthetics, speech and masticatory function.

Impaction of a maxillary central incisor is a rare dental condition which is easy noticed by the patient and the general practitioners because it has a strong impact against dental and facial esthetics. In many cases this is due to the presence of one or more supernumerary teeth, easy recognized on radiographs. The absolute indication in these situations is the early removal of the supernumerary teeth in order to minimalize the damage in the anterior area. Almost in all cases the surgical phase should be followed by the orthodontic phase in order to bring the impacted tooth in the dental alignment, to establish the proper occlusion and function. In our paper we present the case of a 9 years boy with left central maxillary incisor impaction and 2 supernumerary teeth in the anterior area. Supernumerary teeth represent a maxillarry dental anomaly of number, registered in the 1st Angle class. The goal of the authors was to analyze the frequency and the pattern of these anomalies in number in a group of patients who presented for an orthodontic treatment at the Clinic of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry of the Faculty of Dentistry, UMFST Tg. Mures between the years 2015 and 2018 and to establish correlations between this anomaly and other pathologies belonging to the orthodontic field. The analyzed variables included age, gender, health condition, constitution, origin, and the statistical analysis was focused on the following parameters: the affected dentition and arch sector, number of supernumerary teeth and their location, association with other anomalies, onset of complications.

Supernumerary tooth represents a developmental anomaly that consists in duplication of tooth in the normal series. The presence of a supernumerary tooth may result in the appearance of aesthetic or functional problems in the dento-maxillary system. A girl, 11 years old, with upper midline shift following a supernumerary teeth and severe upper crowding was successfully treated after extraction of supernumerary tooth and four first bicuspids. Stages of diagnosis and treatment have been described in detail. In order to obtain good treatment results it was necessary to use an asymmetrical orthodontic mechanic. In this case report, the diagnostic workflow and current treatment concepts was presented and critically discussed.

The distomolars are supernumerary teeth that forms behind of maxillary and mandibular third molars. The etiology of this numerary anomaly has multiple theories but none of them is fully accepted. Most of the time, supernumerary teeth are associated with genetics syndromes like labio-palatal cleft, cleidocranial dysostosis, Gardner syndrome, but at healthy patients the prevalence is very low. This study presents three cases diagnosticated at Hospital “Sf. Spiridon” Iasi, Oral and MaxilloFacial department, with maxillary distomolars at patients without any associated syndromes. The anomaly did not had local complications, it was diagnosticated following paraclinic exams like panoramic radiographs and cone-beam computer tomography.
