Oral health has an effect on various aspects: speech, smile, taste, chewing, swallowing and the communication of various emotions, through facial expressions. Aim. This study purposed to assess the influence of orthodontic treatment on patients' quality of life, by correlating the specific social and psychological areas. Material and method. The study group involved 100 people aged between 15 and 20 years (mean age 17.3), of both genders. The applied questionnaire comprised a number of 26 questions that evaluated several components: aesthetic (1-6), psychological (7-12), social (13-22) and self-esteem (23-26). The questions were formulated starting from the evaluation proposed by Klages et al. Results. The distribution according to gender revealed the predominance of the female gender in the studied group, and the environment of origin was predominantly urban. The association between the degree of acceptability, psychological comfort and self-confidence were not statistically significantly correlated with malocclusion for respondents. Orthodontic treatment caused statistically significant differences in increasing self-esteem and socialconfidence. Discussions. In addition to improving dental and facial aesthetics, orthodontic treatment has led to progress in social relationships, with increased confidence and self-esteem, social acceptability in the study group. Conclusions. Despite the limitations of this study, we observed that orthodontic treatment increases various aspects in oral health related quality of life. The results of orthodontic treatment must be appreciated in terms of psycho-social and emotional benefits, not only according to dental, skeletal and occlusal criteria.

Objectives. Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) is a restorative and preventive concept for carious lesions approach. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the durability of ART restorations on temporary molars. Material and method. ART was applied to a group of 64 children aged 4-7 years, with a total number of 112 class I and II carious lesions, located on temporary molars, restored. The material used for coronary restorations by ART technique was Fuji IX glass-ionomer cement (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan). Each restoration was evaluated after 6 and 12 months respectively, by code assignment, from 0 to 6. The obtained data were statistically processed using SPSS Version 20.0 (IBM, Chicago, Ill, USA). Results were considered statistically significant for p < 0.05. Results. The 6-month evaluation revealed a high number of scores 0 and 1, without significant differences between them (p > 0.05). Assessment after 12 month revealed a reduction of scores 0 with statistically significant differences in favor of score 1 (p < 0.05). Comparison of the scores of restorations at 6 and 12 months revealed statistically significant differences for score 0 (p < 0.05). Conclusions. The high number of clinically acceptable restorations (scores 0 and 1) underlines the potential of ART to provide for children with an increased degree of anxiety, who have active caries, the treatment of dental lesions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate temporary teeth caries incidence in a group of school-childrens and to identify determinants of caries lesions that can be controlled through cost-effective interventions. Material and method. 112 school-childrens were followed from the age of 7 to 10 years. The status of the temporary teeth was evaluated annually, by means of the dmft index. The data were processed statistically, and the results were considered significant for p < 0.05. Results. The evolution of the dmft index reflected the lack of interest for the treatment of dental lesions, having values of 4.82 ± 2.19 at the age of 7 years, respectively 5.02 ± 1.40 at the age of 8 years. The frequency of dental brushing has led to significant differences in relation to the temporary teeth decay incidence, at the above mentioned ages. Discussions. The dmft index for temporary teeth during mixed dentition has no absolute relevance, due to the individual variability related to dental permutation, but remains the best predictor for caries risk assessment of young permanent teeth. Oral-dental hygiene has proven to be an element that allows for adequate control of carious disease. Conclusions. The programs for the prevention of dental caries, with the direct purpose of learning the correct dental brushing technique, should be started from the period of the temporary dentition, in order to allow the proper posteruption evolution and maturation of the permanent teeth.

Objective. To evaluate the quality of life of edentulous patients with implant prosthetic work. Methods. Retrospective study, between 2015 and 2016, with a group of 50 patients in the over-implantation phase. Patients responded to a satisfaction questionnaire following overdenture prosthesis. Results. Overdenture has improved the quality of life of patients by regaining their self-esteem, regaining the aesthetic, phonetic and mastication functions, as well as the possibility of using a solid consistency diet without the occurrence of pain. Conclusion. The use of overdenture prosthesis is a treatment that gives patients satisfaction from all points of view (functional, psychological, aesthetic and economic). To reflect the reality, future studies will need to obtain information from a larger number of subjects from different backgrounds, being treated in different clinics.

Background: Fixed retainers assist in maintaining the outcomes of orthodontic treatment. Fixed retention may be affected by bruxism. Objective: Evaluate two adhesives (an ormocer and a flowable composite) used for fixed orthodontic retention in simulated bruxism settings, compared to regular mastication, using a dual axis chewing simulator. Methods: Eighty human teeth were used. Periodontal tissues were simulated and exposed to 120,000 mechanical cycles, corresponding to 6 months of clinical service. Each set of two teeth was supplied with a pre-shaped, fixed, multi-braided, stainless steel wire retainer, in 1.5 cm portions, to establish passive contact with the lingual surface of the teeth. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was used to evaluate the shear bond strength. A stereomicroscope was used to assess the micro-infiltration. Results: There was no significant difference in the mean value of micro-infiltration between adhesives in the mastication group but in the bruxism group. During testing, one composite sample (ARI score 1) was broken in the mastication group, while three ormocer samples (ARI score 2) and one composite sample (ARI score 1) were broken in the bruxism group. Conclusions: The mean value for micro-infiltration in composite (0.31) was more than double that in ormocer (0.13).
