The study aimed to compare various toothpastes and mouthwashes on permanent tooth dentin after erosive and abrasive challenges. 130 sound premolars dentin were randomly submitted to an initial erosive challenge and a cycle of erosive and abrasive challenges for five days. The five experimental groups (n = 26) were: (1) Control group (artificial saliva), (2) Elmex erosion protection toothpaste and mouthwash, (3) Vitis anticaries biorepair toothpaste and mouthwash, (4) Oral B Pro-expert toothpaste and Oral B Fluorinse mouthwash, and (5) MI Paste ONE toothpaste and Caphosol mouthwash. Microhardness, surface roughness values, and the topographical characteristics of the dentin surface were assessed. The highest percentage of recovered dentin microhardness (%RDMH) value was observed in groups 2 and 4, followed by groups 5 and 3, respectively. The %RDMH values in groups 2 and 4 did not demonstrate a significant difference (p = 0.855). The highest percentage of improvement in surface roughness was recorded in groups 2 and 4, with no significant differences (p = 0.989). The atomic force microscopy (AFM) findings were consistent with the surface roughness data. The best recovery of dentin microhardness and roughness were measured with the Elmex and Oral B toothpaste and mouthwash, followed by MI Paste ONE toothpaste and Caphosol mouthwash and Vitis anticaries biorepair toothpaste and mouthwash., (© 2024. Purpose: This study investigated whether the tubular occluding effect of oxalate desensitizer (OX) during adhesive cementation improved bonding of a self-etch and two etch-and-rinse resin cements to dentin after 6 months., Methods: A flat dentin surface was prepared on 120 extracted premolars, which were randomly divided into six groups of 20 teeth each according to the adhesive resin cement system used: ED primer II/Panavia F2.0, Excite DSC (Ex DSC)/Variolink II, and One-Step Plus (OS Plus)/Duolink, with or without OX (BisBlock) application. After cementation of an indirect composite rod, two subgroups (n=10) were tested after 24 h and 6 months of water storage plus thermocycling, and shear bond strengths were recorded in MPa., Results: Statistical tests showed that although oxalate had a borderline significant negative effect on initial bonding of ED primer II/Panavia F2.0, it significantly improved bonding durability (p<0.05). OX severely compromised the initial bond strength of Ex DSC/Variolink II (p<0.001) but had no effect on the reduction in bonding after aging. OX was compatible with OS Plus/Duolink and did not affect the loss of bonding strength after 6 months (p>0.05)., Conclusion: Combining an oxalate desensitizer with three types of resin cements had different effects on bond strength to dentin after aging, depending on the interaction of oxalate with the adhesive system associated to the resin cement., (Copyright © 2011 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of chlorhexidine [CH] on dentin bond strength of three resin cements after 1 year of water storage., Methods: A flat middle dentin surface was prepared on 120 extracted premolars. The teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups of 20 specimens each according to the resin cement used: Panavia F2.0, Variolink II, and RelyX Unicem, with or without CH application. After cementation of an indirect composite rod [Z250], one subgroup [n=10] was tested after 24h in water at 37 ° C and the other subgroup [n=10] was tested after 1 year storage in water plus thermocycling. A shear bond strength [SBS] test was performed. The data [in MPa] were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey tests [P<0.05]., Results: Three-way ANOVA [resin cement, CH and time] indicated that Variolink II had the highest strength [16.65 ± 3.60] and RelyX Unicem had the lowest strength [9.30 ± 4.07]. Chlorhexidine application increased SBS [13.31 ± 4.61] compared to samples without CH [12.16 ± 5.04] [P=0.04]. Initial SBS [15.63 ± 4.37] was significantly higher than after 1 year of storage [9.85 ± 3.36] [P<0.001]. Separate two-way ANOVA for 24-h and 1-year data showed that cement had a significant effect but CH and its interaction had no significant effect at 24h, whereas at 1 year the two factors and their interaction differed significantly [P ≤ 0.001]., Conclusions: Chlorhexidine 2% can diminish the loss of bonding effectiveness over time associated to etch-and-rinse and self-etch cements, although it appears not have any effect on self-adhesive cement., (Copyright © 2010 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Aims: To compare the effects of repeated use of two one-bottle adhesives with that of two all- in- one adhesives (with acetone solvent) on bond strength to dentin., Materials and Methods: A flat dentin surface was prepared on 120 bovine incisors using 600- grit abrasive pape. The teeth were randomly assigned into 12 equal groups. The four adhesive systems [Prime and Bond NT (P&B NT), One-Step Plus (OS), iBond (iB), and G-Bond (GB)] were used at baseline, after the lid of the container had been opened 30 times, and after it had been opened 60 times. Before each use of the adhesives, the lids of the containers were left open for 1 min. The resin composites were applied on the dentin in a cylindrical split mold. After thermocycling, shear bond strength test was performed with a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min. We used Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests for statistical analysis., Results: There was no statistically significant difference among bond strength (MPa) of the groups of P&B NT (31.9 +/- 4.6, 31.8 +/- 6.5, 26.1 +/- 6.7) and OS (33.2 +/- 5.1, 30.9 +/- 7, 29.3 +/- 5.9), respectively (P > 0.05). The mean of the bond strength of iB and GB after 60 times (15.3 +/- 4.1 and 12.2 +/- 3.9, respectively) was significantly lower than that of iB and GB at baseline (23.5 +/- 4.8 and 22.2 +/- 4.5, respectively) (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: Repeated use (60 times) of the all-in-one adhesive led to a decline in the dentin bond strength. To avoid this problem it would be advisable to have containers with smaller amounts of adhesive or perhaps those with only a singe dose.

Background: The main disadvantage of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is its persistent dark coloring. The aim of this study was to cover this discoloration on affected primary tooth dentin with different materials and subsequently measure their shear bond strength (SBS). Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study total of 60 primary teeth were demineralized and randomly divided into five groups (n = 12). The tooth surfaces were treated with 38% SDF, and restorative cylinders were built on the dentin as follows: (1) phosphoric acid etching + GLUMA Universal Adhesive (GUA; etch-and-rinse mode) + composite resin (CR); (2) GUA (self-etch mode) + CR; (3) resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI; Fuji II); (4) Surefil One (self-adhesive CR); and (5) TheraCem (self-adhesive resin cement) + CR. After restoration, the specimens were tested for SBS. Failure mode was determined by digital analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc test. P <0.05 indicated statistical significance. Results: Group 1 had significantly higher mean SBS (P < 0.05) compared to Groups 2-5, while Group 5 had the least SBS (P < 0.001). Mean SBS differences between Groups 2 and 3 were not significant (P = 0.328). Group 4 had lower mean SBS than Groups 1 (P < 0.001) and 2 (P = 0.17). Most groups showed adhesive failure. Conclusion: CR associated with the universal adhesive in etch-and-rinse mode had much higher SBS than the other groups; therefore, we recommend it to cover the dark discoloration generated by SDF. Background: The present study aimed to assess the impact of application of fluoridated- 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) with or without potassium iodide (KI) on silver diamine fluoride (SDF)-treated enamel surface in the primary teeth. Methods: After stained-remineralized caries lesions (s-RCLs) creation, 96 teeth were randomly allocated to four experimental groups: Group 1:SDF-treated enamel followed by 8-h/day application of 10% CP for 2 weeks; Group 2: SDF-treated enamel followed by 15-min/day application of 10% CP for 3 weeks; Group 3: SDF + KI-treated enamel followed by 8-h/day application of 10% CP for 2 weeks; and Group 4: SDF + KI-treated enamel followed by 15-min/day application of 10% CP for 3 weeks. Enamel microhardness (EMH) test (n = 12) and spectrophotometric color assessment (n = 12) was performed at four stages: baseline (intact enamel), demineralized enamel, aged remineralized-stained enamel, and after final intervention. Sixteen samples were used for SEM evaluation. Data were analyzed with the paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey's post-hoc test (p < 0.05). Results: EMH values in all groups showed significant decrease after demineralization (all, p < 0.00001). All samples showed complete recovery of EMH values (%REMH) after SDF application compared to demineralization (%REMHSDF) (p = 0.971). Bleaching caused a slight decrease in %REMH for all groups. However, the differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.979). SEM findings revealed no changes in enamel porosity after bleaching. Bleaching application ameliorated the discoloration in all groups (all, p < 0.00001). All samples in Groups 2 and 4 had significantly lighter color after 21 days as compared to 14-day exposure to the bleaching material (both, p < 0.00001). Conclusions: SDF application on demineralized primary tooth enamel completely recovered enamel microhardness. 10% carbamide peroxide effectively bleached SDF stain without causing significant decrease in EMH values. Color improvement was more evident with the use of KI immediately after SDF application. Both 15-min and 8-h application of fluoridated CP resulted in statistically similar color enhancement in primary teeth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the effect of dentin-desensitizing treatment with a casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP–ACP) paste on shear bond strength (SBS) of two types of self-adhering (SA) restorative materials: resin-modified glass-ionomer (Fuji II LC, GC) and self-adhering flowable composite resin (Vertise Flow, Kerr). Flat and smear layer–free dentin surfaces from 48 extracted molars were prepared and divided into four groups (n = 12 per group) according to Fuji II LC or Vertise Flow and CPP–ACP pretreatment or not. After SBS testing, data were statistically analyzed. The adhesive interfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy. SBS was significantly affected by CPP–ACP treatment (P < .001) and SA material (P < .05). The interaction of the two factors was not significant. The results suggested that the CPP–ACP pretreatment of the exposed dentin could have a beneficial effect on bonding ability and interfacial integrity of both SA materials so that intimately adapted interfaces were observed in CPP–ACP groups. Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the adhesion of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive to primary tooth dentin by measuring shear bond strength (SBS) and observing morphological changes with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, a total of 60 primary canine teeth were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 12). The study groups were (1) Phosphoric acid etching + Adper Single Bond 2 (control), (2) phosphoric acid etching + Scotchbond Universal (etch-and-rinse), (3) Scotchbond Universal (self-etch), (4) phosphoric acid etching + Scotchbond Universal + resin, and (5) Scotchbond Universal + resin. Composite cylinders were built on the tooth surface, and 10 samples in each group were selected for SBS testing and identification of the failure modes. Two samples from each group were observed by SEM. One-way ANOVA and Tukey honestly significant difference post hoc test were used for data analysis P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The results showed that SBS in Group 1 was significantly lower than in Groups 2, 3, and 4 (all P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between Groups 2 and 3 (P = 0.98), or between Groups 3 and 4 (P = 0.97). There was no significant difference between Groups 2 and 4 (P = 0.999) or between Groups 1 and 5 (P = 0.156). Mixed and cohesive failures were more frequent in Groups 2, 3 and 4. SEM observations showed that applying phosphoric acid to the dentin before Scotchbond Universal adhesive resulted in more open dentinal tubules and more resin tag impregnation. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in SBS between Scotchbond Universal Adhesive in etch-and-rinse and self-etching modes. The SBS of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive in etch-and-rinse mode was greater than Adper Single Bond 2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
