This article explores the properties of composite materials employed in dental fillings. A traditional nano-hybrid composite containing nanofiller particles exceeding 82% by weight served as a benchmark. The remaining samples were fabricated from ormocer resin, maintaining an identical nanofiller content of 84%. In all specimens, the nanoparticles were dispersed randomly within the matrix. This study presents findings from investigations into surface geometry, hardness, wettability, and tribological behavior. The microscopic observations revealed that ormocer-based samples exhibited greater surface roughness than those composed of the traditional composite. Hardness testing indicated that both ceramic addition and sample preparation significantly influenced mechanical properties. Ceramic-enhanced samples demonstrated superior hardness, surpassing the reference composite by 30% and 43%, respectively. Contact angle measurements revealed hydrophilic characteristics in the classic composite, contrasting with the hydrophobic nature of ceramic-containing samples. Tribological evaluations revealed the superiority of the classic composite in terms of friction coefficients and volumetric wear compared to ormocer-based materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluates the wear resistance of dental paste-like bulk-fill composites compared to conventional paste-like composite resins using an intraoral scanner and 3-D analyzing software. Six different dental composite materials, including five bulk-fill composites and one conventional composite, were tested alongside natural human enamel as a control group. A computer-controlled chewing simulator for wear testing. A one-way ANOVA test was used to identify any significant differences between the means of the tested dental composite materials α=0.05. The results showed variability among bulk-fill composites, with some demonstrating wear resistance similar to conventional composites (p<0.05). Human enamel displayed the lowest wear values, but some bulk-fill composites matched this resistance(p>0.05). Significant variability was observed among bulk-fill composites but the results were comparable to those of conventional composites. The enamel control group demonstrated the lowest wear values, with some bulk-fill composites showing similar wear resistance. This study provides valuable information about the wear resistance of contemporary bulk-fill composite materials, commonly used in current clinical practice, contributing to enhancing clinical procedures. Dental caries and dental restorations possess a long history and over the years, many materials and methods have been invented. In recent decades, modern techniques and materials have brought complexity to this issue, which has created the necessity to investigate more and more to achieve durability, consistency, proper mechanical properties, efficiency, beauty, good colour, and reduced costs and time. Combined with the recent advances in the medical field, mechanical engineering plays a significant role in this topic. This work aims at studying the elasto-static response of a human molar tooth as a case study, respecting the integral property of the tooth and different composite materials of the dental restoration. The structural integrity of the case study will be assessed through advanced numerical modelling resorting to meshless methods within the stress analysis on the molar tooth under different loading conditions. In this regard, bruxism is considered as being one of the most important cases that cause damage and fracture in a human tooth. The obtained meshless methods results are compared to the finite element method (FEM) solution. The advantages and disadvantages of the analysed materials are identified, which could be used by the producers of the studied materials to improve their quality. On the other hand, a computational framework, as the one presented here, would assist the clinical practice and treatment decision (in accordance with each patient's characteristics). The potential of glass ceramics as applicable materials in various fields including fillers for dental restorations is our guide to present a new procedure for improvements of the mechanical properties of dental composites. This work aims to use Zn2SiO4 and SiO2–ZnO nano-materials as fillers to improve the mechanical properties of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixed dental resins. Zn2SiO4 and SiO2–ZnO samples were prepared and characterized by using XRD, FE-SEM, EDX, and FT-IR techniques. The XRD pattern of the SiO2–ZnO sample shows that ZnO crystallized in a hexagonal phase, while the SiO2 phase was amorphous. Similarly, the Zn2SiO4 sample crystallized in a rhombohedral crystal system. The prepared samples were used as fillers for the improvement of the mechanical properties of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixed dental resins. Five samples of dental composites composed of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA mixed resins were filled with 2, 5, 8, 10, and 15 wt% of SiO2–ZnO, and similarly, five samples were filled with Zn2SiO4 samples (2, 5, 8, 10, and 15 wt%). All of the 10 samples (A1–A10) were characterized by using different techniques including FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, and TGA analyses. According to the TGA analysis, all samples were thermally stable up to 200 °C, and the thermal stability increased with the filler percent. Next, the mechanical properties of the samples including the flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), diameter tensile strength (DTS), and compressive strength (CS) were investigated. The obtained results revealed that the samples filled with 8 wt% of SiO2–ZnO and 10 wt% of Zn2SiO4 had higher FS values of 123.4 and 136.6 MPa, respectively. Moreover, 8 wt% of both fillers displayed higher values of the FM, DTS, and CS parameters. These values were 8.6 GPa, 34.2 MPa, and 183.8 MPa for SiO2–ZnO and 11.3 GPa, 41.2 MPa, and 190.5 MPa for the Zn2SiO4 filler. Inexpensive silica-based materials enhance polymeric mechanics. The aim of this study was an in-situ synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HA) on cellulose fibers to be used as a new reinforcing agent for dental restorations. The microwave irradiation method was used for synthesis and the materials were characterized with analytical techniques. The prepared dental resin composites were mechanically tested by a universal testing machine and electrodynamic fatigue testing system. FTIR, XRD, SEM/EDS analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of HA on cellulose fibers. The Alamar blue biocompatibility assay showed more than 90% cell viability for the prepared cellulose/HA. The mechanical properties of resin composites improved with cellulose content from 30 wt.% to 50 wt.% in the polymer matrix. Substantially, increasing the cellulose/HA content from 40% to 50% improved the mechanical properties. The results suggested that HA could be successfully synthesized on cellulose fibers using microwave irradiation and contributed to improving the mechanical properties of dental resin composites. Water sorption, high volumetric shrinkage, polymerization stress, and potential estrogenic effects triggered by leached compounds are some of the major concerns related to BisGMA-TEGDMA co-monomer systems used in dental composites. These deficiencies call for the development of alternative organic matrices in order to maximize the clinical lifespan of resin composite dental restorations. This study proposes BisGMA-free systems based on the combination of UDMA and a newly synthesized diurethane dimethacrylate, and evaluates key mechanical and physical properties of the resulting materials. 2EMATE-BDI (2-hydroxy-1-ethyl methacrylate) was synthesized by the reaction between 2-hydroxy-1-ethyl methacrylate with a difunctional isocyanate (1.3-bis (1- isocyanato-1-methylethylbenzene) – BDI). The compound was copolymerized with UDMA (urethane dimethacrylate) at 40 and 60 wt%. UDMA copolymerizations with 40 and 60 wt% TEGDMA (triethylene glycol dimethacrylate) were tested as controls, as well as a formulation based in BisGMA (bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate)-TEGDMA 60:40% (BT). The organic matrices were made polymerizable by the addition of DMPA (2.2-dimethoxyphenoxy acetophenone) and DPI-PF6 (diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate) at 0.2 and 0.4 wt%, respectively. Formulations were tested as composite with the addition of 70 wt% inorganic content consisting of barium borosilicate glass (0.7 μm) and fumed silica mixed in 95 and 5 wt%, respectively. All photocuring procedures were carried out by a mercury arc lamp filtered to 320–500 nm at 800 mW/cm2. The experimental resin composites were tested for kinetics of polymerization and polymerization stress in real time. Flexural strength, elastic modulus, water sorption, and solubility were assessed according to ISO 4049. Biofilm formation was analyzed after 24 h by luciferase assay. Data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α ≤ 0.05). In general, the addition of 2EMATE-BDI into the formulations decreased the maximum rate of polymerization (RP MAX), the degree of conversion at RP MAX (DC at RP MAX), and the final degree of conversion (final DC). However, these reductions did not compromise mechanical properties, which were comparable to the BT controls, especially after 7-day water incubation. The incorporation of 60 wt% 2EMATE-BDI reduced water sorption of the composite. 2EMATE-BDI containing formulations showed reduction in polymerization stress of 30% and 50% in comparison to BT control and TEGDMA copolymerizations, respectively. Biofilm formation was similar among the tested groups. The use of the newly synthesized diurethane dimethacrylate as co-monomer in dental resin composite formulations seems to be a promising option to develop polymers with low-shrinkage and potentially decreased water degradation. This study systematically reviews the literature on self-healing microcapsule technology and evaluates the biocompatibility of self-healing microcapsules and the efficiency of crack repair within resin-based dental composites. An electronic search was carried out using the following databases: MedLine (PubMed) , Embase, the Cochrane Library and Google Scholar. All titles and abstracts of the articles and patents found were analysed and selected according to the eligibility criteria. Only studies published in English were included; the outcomes sought for this review were dental resin composites with self-healing potential. There were no restrictions on the type of self-healing system involved in dental resin composites. The search yielded 10 studies and 2 patents involving self-healing approaches to dental resin composites. According to the current literature on self-healing dental resin composites, when a crack or damage occurs to the composite, microcapsules rupture, releasing the healing agent to repair the crack with a self-healing performance ranging from 25% to 80% of the virgin fracture toughness. Self-healing strategies used with resin composite materials have, to date, been bioinspired. So far, self-healing microcapsule systems within dental composites include poly urea-formaldehyde (PUF) or silica microcapsules. The main healing agents used in PUF microcapsules are DCPD monomer and TEGDMA-DHEPT, with other agents also explored. Silica microcapsules use water/polyacid as a healing agent. All self-healing systems have shown promising results for self-repair and crack inhibition, suggesting a prolonged life of dental composite restorations. A novel filler-resin matrix interphase structure was developed and evaluated for dental composite restoratives. Nanogel additives were chemically attached to the filler surface to use this created interphase as a potential source of compliance to minimize stress development during polymerization. In addition, we evaluated the effects of free nanogel dispersion into the resin matrix, combined or not with nanogel-modified fillers. Nanogels with varied characteristics were synthesized (i.e., size, 5 and 11 nm; glass transition temperature, 28 °C to 65 °C). Glass fillers were treated with trimethoxyvinylsilane and further reacted with thiol-functionalized nanogels via a free radical thiol-ene reaction. γ-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane-surface treated fillers were used as a control. Composites were formulated with BisGMA/TEGDMA resin blend with 60 wt% fillers with nanogel-modified fillers and/or free nanogel additives at 15 wt% in the resin phase. Polymerization kinetics, polymerization stress, volumetric shrinkage, and rheological and mechanical properties were evaluated to provide comprehensive characterization. Nanogel-modified fillers significantly reduced the polymerization stress from 2.2 MPa to 1.7 to 1.4 MPa, resulting in 20% stress reduction. A significantly greater nanogel content was required to generate the same magnitude stress reduction when the nanogels were dispersed only in the resin phase. When the nanogel-modified filler surface treatment and resin-dispersed nanogel strategies were combined, there was a stress reduction of 50% (values of 1.2 to 1.1 MPa). Polymerization rate and volumetric shrinkage were significantly reduced for systems with nanogel additives into the resin. Notably, the flexural modulus of the materials was not compromised, although a slight reduction in flexural strength associated with the nanogel-modified interphase was observed. Overall, modest amounts of free nanogel additives in the resin phase can be effectively combined with a limited nanogel content filler-resin interphase to lower volumetric shrinkage and dramatically reduce overall polymerization stress of composites. Currently, much has been published related to conventional resin-based composites and adhesives; however, little information is available about bioceramics-based restorative materials. The aim was to structure this topic into its component parts and to highlight the translational research that has been conducted up to the present time. A literature search was done from indexed journals up to September 2017. The main search terms used were based on dental resin-based composites, dental adhesives along with bioactive glass and the calcium phosphate family. The results showed that in 123 articles, amorphous calcium phosphate (39.83%), hydroxyapatite (23.5%), bioactive glass (16.2%), dicalcium phosphate (5.69%), monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (3.25%), and tricalcium phosphate (2.43%) have been used in restorative materials. Moreover, seven studies were found related to a newly developed commercial bioactive composite. The utilization of bioactive materials for tooth restorations can promote remineralization and a durable seal of the tooth-material interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aims of this study were to evaluate 1) the effect of different light-curing training methods on first-year dental students' light-curing performance immediately after and one year after training and 2) the effect of dental student year (first vs. third year) and different light-curing training methods on students' light-curing efficacy. The study was organized into two parts, conducted in 2013 and 2014. In the first part, all students (N=66) in the first-year restorative course at a Canadian dental school were invited to participate in a light-curing activity immediately after training; after 12 months, those students (now in their second year) were asked to again perform the light-curing activity. In the second part, all the subsequent first-year students (N=75) and third-year students (N=95) were invited to perform the same light-curing activity after training. Each class was divided into three groups: the Control group received a lecture; the Tips group received the same lecture plus tips on "7 Steps to Ensure Better Light Curing"; and the Simulator group received the lecture, tips, and hands-on training using the patient simulator. In the first part of the study, all 66 students participated in the first year; 39 of those participated a year later. In the second part, all students in both years participated. For the first part, time had a significant effect on light-curing performance, with significantly higher results in the second year. When the first-year students' results were isolated, training method had a significant effect on mean and maximum irradiance values. The second part found a significant effect of training on mean (p=0.003) and maximum (p=0.021) irradiance. The interaction DDS*training was significant (p=0.037) when the after-training values were analyzed. Calcium phosphates (CaPs)-containing composites have already shown good properties from the point of view of dental restorative materials. The purpose of this study was to examine the crucial mechanical properties of twelve hydroxyapatite- or tricalcium phosphate-filled composites. The raw and surface-treated forms of both CaP fillers were applied. As a reference materials two experimental glass-containing composites and one commercial dental restorative composite were applied. Nano-hardness, elastic modulus, compressive, flexural and diametral tensile strength of all studied materials were determined. Application of statistical methods (one-way analysis of variance and cluster agglomerative analysis) allowed for assessing the similarities between examined materials according to the values of studied parameters. The obtained results show that in almost all cases the mechanical properties of experimental CaPs-composites are comparable or even better than mechanical properties of examined reference materials. Flexural strength is one of the most significant test to evaluate mechanical performance of dental restorative materials because it combines compression, tension and shear stresses. These stresses will affect the restoration during mastication in a great similarity to the real oral situation. Many brands of Bulk-fill composites are being introduced to the dental market in the last few years which enable the dentist to place a restoration of 4 mm in thickness as a single composite increment. It's important to test the flexural strength of bulk-fill composites to have an idea about their clinical performance in the oral cavity and consequently the durability of the restoration. This study was designed to evaluate flexural strength values of Tetric EvoCeram bulk-fill composite in comparison with three different traditional composites. This study investigates the flexural strength of four different composites with A3 shade: Tetric EvoCeram Bulk fill (Ivoclar-Vivadent), Nanoceram-Bright (DMP), Ceram.X one (Dentsply), Estelite Sigma Quick (Tokuyama Dental). Ten samples from each composite material were prepared in a metal mold with dimensions of 2 mm x 2 mm x 25 mm and were photo-cured for 20 seconds. The samples were in a bar shape of the same mold dimensions. Flexural strength was evaluated by three-point bending test using universal testing machine after incubation of the samples in 37°C saline for 24 hours. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's test at 5% level of significance. One-way ANOVA test revealed that, there was a statistically significant difference between the four composite groups being tested (P≤0.05). The highest mean flexural strength value was obtained for NANOCERAM-BRIGHT (116.75 MPa) followed by Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (116.09 MPa), CERAM.X ONE (101.12 MPa) and ESTELITE SIGMA QUICK which exhibited the lowest mean flexural strength value (97.40 MPa). It was concluded that composition of dental composite materials significantly affects their flexural strength. Composites with higher fillers content will have better flexural strength. Dental composite materials which are used as tooth fillings have numerous advantages and disadvantages in comparison to previously used alternative materials. Effects of polymerization shrinkage (light curing) of composite polymer materials which occur after illuminating with a LED lamp can cause problems in dental practice. Considered in this paper were the mechanical consequences which can occur due to light curing, along with strain fields for composites Z250, TetricEvoCeram and Silorane, as well as strain on a separate circular section that have occurred before and after light curing, by using the DIC method. For restoring cavitated dental lesions, whether carious or not, a large number of material combinations are available. We aimed to systematically review and synthesize data of comparative dental restorative trials. A systematic review was performed. Randomized controlled trials published between 2005 and 2015 were included that compared the survival of ≥2 restorative and/or adhesive materials (i.e., no need for restorative reintervention). Pairwise and Bayesian network meta-analyses were performed, with separate evaluations for cervical cavitated lesions and load-bearing posterior cavitated lesions in permanent and primary teeth. A total of 11,070 restorations (5,330 cervical, 5,740 load bearing) had been placed in 3,633 patients in the included trials. Thirty-six trials investigated restoration of cervical lesions (all in permanent teeth) and 36 of load-bearing lesions (8 in primary and 28 in permanent teeth). Resin-modified glass ionomer cements had the highest chance of survival in cervical cavitated lesions; composites or compomers placed via 2-step self-etch and 3-step etch-and-rinse adhesives were ranked next. Restorations placed with 2-step etch-and-rinse or 1-step self-etch adhesives performed worst. For load-bearing restorations, conventional composites had the highest probability of survival, while siloranes were found least suitable. Ambiguity remains regarding which adhesive strategy to use in load-bearing cavitated lesions. Most studies showed high risk of bias, and several comparisons were prone for publication bias. If prioritized for survival, resin-modified glass ionomer cements might be recommended to restore cervical lesions. For load-bearing ones, conventional or bulk fill composites seem most suitable. The available evidence is quantitatively and qualitatively insufficient for further recommendations, especially with regard to adhesive strategies in posterior load-bearing situations. Moreover, different material classifications might yield different findings on the same materials. Future trials should aim for sufficient power, longer follow-up times, and high internal validity to prove or refute differences between certain material combinations. Objective The effect of filler content in dental restorative composites on the polymerization shrinkage stress (PS) is not straightforward and has caused much debate in the literature. Our objective in this study was to clarify the PS/filler content relationship based on analytical and experimental approaches, so that guidelines for materials comparison in terms of PS and clinical selection of dental composites with various filler content can be provided. Methods Analytically, a simplified model based on linear elasticity was utilized to predict PS as a function of filler content under various compliances of the testing system, a cantilever beam-based instrument used in this study. The predictions were validated by measuring PS of composites synthesized using 50/50 mixtures of two common dimethacrylate resins with a variety of filler contents. Results Both experiments and predictions indicated that the influence of filler content on the PS highly depended on the compliance of the testing system. Within the clinic-relevant range of compliances and for the specific sample configuration tested, the PS increased with increasing filler content at low compliance of instrument, while increasing the compliance caused the effect of filler content on the PS to gradually diminish. Eventually, at high compliance, the PS inverted and decreased with increasing filler content. Significance This compliance-dependent effect of filler content on PS suggests: (1) for materials comparison in terms of PS, the specific compliance at which the comparison being done should always be reported and (2) clinically, composites with relatively lower filler content could be selected for such cavities with relatively lower compliance ( e.g. a Class-I cavity with thick tooth walls or the basal part in a cavity) and vice versa in order to reduce the final PS. ABSTRACT To reduce human exposure risk to bisphenol A derivatives, a new 2,2-bis[p-(2'-hydroxy-3'-methacryloxypropoxy) phenylene]propane (Bis-GMA) free dental composites material GEC-66% was prepared using a dendritic macromer (G-IEMA) as one component of resin matrix. Properties of GEC-66%, such as double bond conversion (DC), polymerization shrinkage, water sorption (WS) and solubility, flexural strength (FS) and modulus, and cytotoxicity on human dental pulp cells were evaluated. The commercial Bis-GMA contained restorative material 3M ESPS FiltekTM Z250 was used as a control. The results showed that GEC-66% had higher DC and WS, comparable shrinkage and solubility, and less cytotoxicity, when compared with Z250. Though FS of GEC-66% was lower than that of Z250, it still met the ISO requirement for polymer-based restorative materials. All of these proved that GEC-66% had potential to be used in clinic. Objectives This study investigated the effects of bacterial biofilm on the surface properties of novel bioactive glass (BAG)-containing composites of different initial surface roughness. Methods BAG (65 mol% Si; 4% P; 31% Ca) and BAG-F (61% Si; 31% Ca; 4% P; 3% F; 1% B) were synthesized by the sol–gel method and micronized (size ∼0.1–10 μm). Composites with 72 wt% total filler load were prepared by replacing 15% of the silanized Sr glass with BAG, BAG-F, or silanized silica. Specimens ( n = 10/group) were light-cured and divided into 4 subgroups of different surface roughness by wet polishing with 600 and then up to 1200, 2400, or 4000 grit SiC. Surface roughness (SR), gloss, and Knoop microhardness were measured before and after incubating in media with or without a Streptococcus mutans (UA 159) biofilm for 2 weeks. Results were analyzed with ANOVA/Tukey's test ( α = 0.05). Results The SR of the BAG-containing composites with the smoothest surfaces (2400/4000 grit) increased in media or bacteria; the SR of the roughest composites (600 grit) decreased. The gloss of the smoothest BAG-containing composites decreased in bacteria and media-only, but more in media-alone. The microhardness of all of the composites decreased with exposure to media or bacteria, with BAG-containing composites affected more than the control. Significance Exposure to bacterial biofilm and its media produced enhanced roughness and reduced gloss and surface microhardness of highly polished dental composites containing a bioactive glass additive, which could affect further biofilm formation, as well as the esthetics, of restorations made from such a material. Objective Released dental composite components can damage human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) and their DNA. The cytotoxicity, chromatin condensation and the induction of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) by different compounds of dental composites was investigated using an improved γ-H2AX focus assay. Methods HGFs were incubated with the monomers: bisphenol-A-ethoxylate-dimethacrylate (Bis-DMA), bisphenol-A-glycerolate-dimethacrylate (BisGMA), ethyltriethylen glycol methacrylate (ETEGMA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), 1,6-hexandiol-dimethycrylate (HDDMA), trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (TMPTA), and acrylamide (ACR). DSBs were determined by enumerating γ-H2AX and 53BP1 foci colocalized at DSBs. Results A concentration-dependent induction of DSBs was found in the order: GMA > BisGMA > ACR > Bis-DMA > HDDMA > TMPTA > ETEGMA. HGFs exposure to GMA (0.3 mM) and to BisGMA (0.09 mM) induced the highest rate of DSB foci, i.e. 12-fold and 8-fold, respectively, relative to control (0.33 DSB foci/cell). At the highest concentrations (EC 50 ) prominent changes in the chromatin morphology of HGF cell nuclei, i.e. compaction of nuclear chromatin and reduction of the area covered by the ovoid fibroblast nuclei, were observed. Nuclear condensation was significantly induced by GMA (1.7-fold at 0.3 mM) and BisGMA (1.6-fold at 0.09 mM), which correlated with the highest numbers of induced DSB foci (GMA, BisGMA, 3.9 and 2.6 foci/cell, respectively). Significance The improved γ-H2AX/53BP1 focus assay revealed a concentration-dependent increase in DSBs for all tested substances. Objectives To assess the performance of thiol–ene dental composites based on selected ester-free thiol–ene formulations. Further, to point out the benefits/drawback of having a hydrolytically stable thiol–ene matrix within a glass filled composite. Methods Composite samples containing 50–65 wt% of functionalized glass microparticles were prepared and photopolymerized in the presence of a suitable visible light photoinitiator. Shrinkage stress measurements were conducted as a function of the irradiation time. Degrees of conversion were measured by FT-IR analysis by comparing the double bond signals before and after photopolymerization. Mechanical tests were carried out on specimens after curing as well as after extended aging in water. Dynamic mechanical analysis was employed to track the changes in storage modulus near body temperature. The properties of the thiol–ene composites were compared with those of the BisGMA/TEGDMA control. Results Depending on the resin type, similar or higher conversions were achieved in thiol–ene composites when compared to the dimethacrylate controls. At comparable conversions, lower shrinkage stress values were achieved. Although exhibiting lower initial elastic moduli, the thiol–ene composites’ flexural strengths were found to be comparable with the controls. Contrary to the control, the mechanical properties of the ester-free thiol–ene composites were shown to be unaffected by extensive aging in water and at least equaled that of the control after aging in water for just five weeks. Significance Employing non-degradable step-growth networks as organic matrices in dental composites will provide structurally uniform, tough materials with extended service time. Dental restorative composites are activated by visible light and the polymerization process, known as direct technique, is initiated by absorbing light in a specific wavelength range (450–500 nm). However this technique presented some disadvantages. If light is not inserted correctly, layers uncured can cause countless damage to restoration, especially with regard to mechanical properties. A clinical alternative used to reduce the shortcomings of direct application is the use of composite resins for indirect application. These composites are adaptations of resins prepared for direct use, with differences mainly in the healing process. Besides the traditional photoactivation, indirect application composites may be submitted to particular curing conditions, such as a slow curing rate, heating, vacuum, and inert-gas pressure leading to an oxygen-free environment. However few studies have been conducted on the process of post-curing by ionizing radiation at low doses. On this sense the purpose of this study was to evaluate possible interactions of ionizing radiation in the post-curing process of the experimental composites based on BisGMA/TEGDMA filled with silica Aerosil OX-50 silanized. Characterization of the experimental composites was performed by thermogravimetry analysis, infrared spectroscopy, elastic modulus and flexural strength. Statistical analysis of results was calculated by one-way ANOVA/Tukey's test. Cross-linking of the polymeric matrix caused by ionizing radiation, influenced the thermal stability of irradiated specimens. FTIR analysis showed that the ionizing radiation induced a post-cure reaction in the specimens. The irradiation dose influenced directly the mechanical properties that showed a strong positive correlation between flexural strength and irradiation and between modulus strength and irradiation. Resin-based dental restorative materials bonded to tooth structure have become one of the most important groups of dental materials nowadays. The presence of un-reacted monomers, as well as the degradation of resins, caused by hydrolysis and/or enzyme catalysis from saliva and oral environment, can lead to the continuous leaching of monomers with potentially cytotoxic and genotoxic effects for the human organism. A simple and rapid method for the determination of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, bisphenol A, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, urethane dimethacrylate, and bisphenol A glycerolate dimethacrylate monomers released from dental polymeric materials is described. Chromatographic separation was achieved isocratically, within 11 min, using a Kromasil 100-C18column (25 cm × 4.6 mm, 5 µM) with CH3OH:CH3CN:H2O, 60:15:25%, v/v, at a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min. The developed method was validated in terms of selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and sensitivity. Within-day repeatability and between-day precision revealed RSD values lower than 11%. The limits of detection ranged from 0.17–0.33 ng/µL. No interference was observed under the described experimental conditions. The method was applied to the study of the monomers released from resin cements through human dentine. To assess the hypotheses that a restored tooth structure for a class II occlusal-distal (OD) cavity can be reinforced by optimizing the cavity geometry and choosing composites with adequate mechanical properties. A human maxillary molar tooth was scanned, and segmented. The 2D profiles of dentin and enamel were drawn and imported to ABAQUS software. Eighteen restored tooth models with different cavity occlusal depths (OcDs) and internal cavity angles were developed. A semi-circular stone part was used to apply contact loads to the restored tooth model. After setting up the required interactions and boundary conditions, a written Python code was used to automatically assign a wide range of elastic moduli, from 2 GPa to 26 GPa, to the composite restorations, and assign constant material properties to the enamel and dentine. For simplicity, the behaviour of the mechanical material was postulated homogeneous and elastic, while the FE analyses were linearly carried out in this study. Also, the code enabled the FEA software to conduct the stress analyses, determine maximum principal stresses, and record the obtained results. The internal cavity angle formed between the mesial wall and the pulpal floor of the cavity significantly changed the peak maximum principal stress both in the enamel and restoration. The peak stress concentrations were observed mostly at the enamel-restoration interface, with an almost perpendicular orientation to this interface. Regarding the effect of occlusal cavity depth (OcD), the model with the shallowest cavity (OcD = 1.5 mm) represented greater resistance to applied loads than the model with deeper cavities (OcD = 2.0 mm and OcD 2.5 mm). The composite modulus (CM) in the range of 10–18 GPa reduced the maximum principal stress concentrations in the enamel. The lowest result for maximum principal stress was observed in the model with OcD = 1.5 mm, CM = 10 GPa and internal cavity angles = 100°, which was the strongest model against contact loads. Class II OD cavities with optimal geometry have reduced induced stress levels, thus being able to be more mechanically robust against contact load transmitted by a stone. Cavity geometry designs with obtuse (more than 90°) internal cavity angles were significantly efficient in minimizing peak stress concentrations. The results indicated that for the model with obtuse internal cavity angles, choosing a composite with optimised properties can diminish stress, particularly at the tooth-restoration interface. Objective To determine the in vitro cytotoxicity of dental composites containing bioactive glass fillers. Methods Dental composites (50:50 Bis-GMA/TEGDMA resin: 72.5 wt% filler, 67.5%Sr–glass and 5% OX50) containing different concentrations (0, 5, 10 and 15 wt%) of two sol–gel bioactive glasses, BAG65 (65 mole% SiO 2 , 31 mole% CaO, 4 mole% P 2 O 5 ) and BAG61 (3 mole% F added) were evaluated for cytotoxicity using Alamar Blue assay. First, composite extracts were obtained from 7 day incubations of composites in cell culture medium at 37 °C. Undifferentiated pulp cells (OD-21) were exposed to dilutions of the original extracts for 3, 5, and 7 days. Then freshly cured composite disks were incubated with OD-21 cells ( n = 5) for 2 days. Subsequently, fresh composite disks were incubated in culture medium at 37 °C for 7 days, and then the extracted disks were incubated with OD-21 cells for 2 days. Finally, fresh composites disks were light cured for 3, 5, and 20 s and incubated with OD-21 cells ( n = 5) for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. To verify that the three different curing modes produced different levels of degree of conversion (DC), the DC of each composite was determined by FTIR. Groups ( n = 5) were compared with ANOVA/Tukey's ( α ≤ 0.05). Results Extracts from all composites significantly reduced cell viability until a dilution of 1:8 or lower, where the extract became equal to the control. All freshly-cured composites showed significantly reduced cell viability at two days. However, no reduction in cell viability was observed for any composite that had been previously soaked in media before exposure to the cells. Composites with reduced DC (3 s vs. 20 s cure), as verified by FTIR, showed significantly reduced cell viability. Significance The results show that the composites, independent of composition, had equivalent potency in terms of reducing the viability of the cells in culture. Soaking the composites for 7 days before exposing them to the cells suggested that the “toxic” components had been extracted and the materials were no longer cytotoxic. The results demonstrate that the cytotoxicity of composites with and without BAG must predominantly be attributed to the release of residual monomers, and not to the presence of the BAG. There is no evidence in the literature on the correlation between surface roughness of dental nanocomposites following application of instruments for finishing compared to instruments for both finishing and polishing and how this relates to the final color of the restoration. This study evaluated the correlation between roughness parameters (Ra and Rmax), of a nano-hybrid composite following finishing alone or finishing and polishing, and color. 70 specimens (8mmX8mmX2mm) of the nano-hybrid Heritage 7 were fabricated. One group of 10 specimens served as control. The remaining specimens of 10 per group were either finished sequentially with (a) diamonds (b) stones (c) carbides or finished and polished with (d) diamonds and Sof-lex discs (e) stones and Sof-lex discs, (f) carbides and Sof-lex discs. Following instrumentation the specimens were assessed using profilometry for surface roughness. Immediately following surface roughness measurements color was assessed using a spectrophotometer. Roughness and color data were assessed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Bonferroni. Correlations between the color coordinates (L*a*b*) and ΔE and roughness parameters (Rmax and Ra) were analyzed at a 0.05 level of significance. There were no statistical changes in Ra measurements between finishing and finishing and polishing, however specimens finished with stones showed a dramatic change in Rmax values compared to control and all the other finishing and finishing and polishing regimens. There was a correlation between Ra and color parameters L* and a* and ΔE. Green and white stones produced the most surface detriment in terms of surface roughness and color. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effect of hybrid silica/poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles on the properties of composites for dental restoration was evaluated. Hybrid nanoparticles with silica as core and PMMA as shell were obtained by a seeded emulsion polymerization process. Fourier transform infrared spectrum of the hybrid nanoparticles shows an intense peak at 1730 cm- 1, corresponding to carbonyl groups (CO) of the ester. The thermal stability of the hybrid particles decreases with increasing amounts of PMMA and the residual mass at 700 °C corresponds to the silica content in the hybrid particles. Composites were obtained by dispersing nanoparticles (silica or hybrid), as fillers, in a resin-bis glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA)/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) (40%/60% (w/w)). The paste was then placed in a mold and polymerized under light irradiation. During the preparation of the composites, with the hybrid nanoparticles, the monomers swell the PMMA shell and after photo-curing, a semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) is obtained around the silica core. The properties of the composites, obtained using the hybrid nanoparticles, depend on the filler content and the amount of PMMA in the semi-IPN matrix. Abstract: In dental restoration postoperative marginal leakage is commonly associated to polymerization shrinkage effects. In consequence the longevity and quality of restorative treatment depends on the shrinkage mechanisms of the composite filling during the polymerization. In this work the development of new techniques for evaluation of those effects under light-induced polymerization of dental nano composite fillings is reported. The composite resins activated by visible light, initiate the polymerization process by absorbing light in wavelengths at about 470nm. The techniques employed in the contraction assessment were digital holography (DH) and Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) based on laser interferometry. A satisfactory resolution was achieved in the non-contact displacement field measurements on small objects concerning the experimental dental samples. According to a specific clinical protocol, natural teeth were used (human mandibular premolars). A class I cavity was drilled and restored with nano composite material, according to Black principles. The polymerization was monitored by DH and ESPI in real time during the cure reaction of the restoration. The total displacement reported for the material in relation of the tooth wall was 3.7μm (natural tooth). Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of temperature on the mechanical and tribological properties of three commercial posterior direct filling resin based restorative composite materials, Synergy (Coltene/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland), Surefil (Dentsply/Caulk, New York, USA) and Alert (Pentron Clinical, Wallingford, USA). The aim of this paper was to evaluate how temperature influences; the hardness, flexural modulus and strength, elastic modulus, and wear of the listed commercial restorative materials. Three commercial resin composites were tested at several temperatures. A closed control system was used to ensure constant test conditions that simulated the temperatures found in an oral environment. For each of the tests, the following mechanical and tribological properties were determined, microhardness (Vickers micro-indentation), elastic modulus (determined both by dynamical methods and by bending tests), flexural resistance and work of fracture parameter (bending tests), and wear (reciprocating tests). Following the tests, the evaluation of the mechanical and tribological properties of the resins suggests that their performance in an oral environment can be significantly affected by temperature, especially the wear resistance. Surefil is the resin least sensitive to temperature variation, while Synergy exhibited the best resistance to wear with respect to temperature variation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Objective: Study and evaluation of fracture toughness, flexural and dynamic mechanical properties, and crosslink density of ternary thiol–ene–methacrylate systems and comparison with corresponding conventional methacrylate system were considered in the present study. Methods: Urethane tetra allyl ether monomer (UTAE) was synthesized as ene monomer. Different formulations were prepared based on combination of UTAE, BisGMA/TEGDMA and a tetrathiol monomer (PETMP). The photocuring reaction was conducted under visible light using BD/CQ combination as photoinitiator system. Mechanical properties were evaluated via measuring flexural strength, flexural modulus and fracture toughness. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to study the morphology of the fractured specimen's cross section. Viscoelastic properties of the samples were also determined by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The same study was performed on a conventional methacrylate system. The data were analyzed and compared by ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (significance level=0.05). Results: The results showed improvement in fracture toughness of the specimens containing thiol–ene moieties. DMTA revealed a lower glass transition temperature and more homogenous structure for thiol–ene containing specimens in comparison to the system containing merely methacrylate monomer. The flexural modulus and flexural strength of the specimens with higher thiol–ene content were lower than the neat methacrylate system. The SEM micrographs of the fractured surface of specimens with higher methacrylate content were smooth and mirror-like (shiny) which represent brittle fracture. Significance: The thiol–ene–methacrylate system can be used as resin matrix of dental composites with enhanced fracture toughness in comparison to the methacrylate analogous. Abstract: Objective: The objective of this manuscript is to address the following questions: Why do direct dental composite restorative materials fail clinically? What tests may be appropriate for predicting clinical performance? Does in vitro testing correlate with clinical performance? Methods: The literature relating to the clinical and laboratory performance of dental composite restorative materials was reviewed. The main reasons for failure and replacement of dental composite restorations provided the guidance for identifying specific material''s properties that were likely to have the greatest impact on clinical outcomes. Results: There are few examples of studies showing correlation between laboratory tests of physical or mechanical properties and clinical performance of dental composites. Evidence does exist to relate clinical wear to flexure strength, fracture toughness and degree of conversion of the polymer matrix. There is evidence relating marginal breakdown to fracture toughness. Despite the fact that little confirmatory evidence exists, there is the expectation that clinical fracture and wear relates to resistance to fatigue. Only minimal evidence exists to correlate marginal quality and bond strength in the laboratory with clinical performance of bonded dental composites. Significance: The use of clinical trials to evaluate new dental composite formulations for their performance is expensive and time consuming, and it would be ideal to be able to predict clinical outcomes based on a single or multiple laboratory tests. However, though certain correlations exist, the overall clinical success of dental composites is multi-factorial and therefore is unlikely to be predicted accurately by even a battery of in vitro test methods. Background. Bisphenol A (BPA) and other related chemical compounds may be components used in the manufacturing process of resin-based composite dental restorative material. The purpose of the authors' study was to assess salivary and urinary concentrations of BPA and other compounds before and after placement of resin-based composite dental restorations. Methods. The authors collected saliva and urine from 172 participants receiving composite restorations before and as long as 30 hours after placement of composite restorations. The authors analyzed saliva specimens from 151 participants and urine specimens from 171 participants for concentrations of BPA and five related compounds by using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Results. Salivary concentrations of BPA and some related compounds increased immediately (within one hour) after composite placement. Salivary concentrations of BPA and most study compounds returned to prerestoration levels within eight hours after composite placement. With the exception of a 43 percent increase in BPA, concentrations of the study compounds in urine returned to prerestoration levels nine to 30 hours after restoration placement. Concentrations in saliva were lower when a rubber dam was used; however, rubber dam use appeared to have no effect on urinary concentrations of the measured compounds during the study period. The authors observed similar changes in study compound levels in both saliva and urine between participants who received anterior restorations and those who received posterior restorations. Conclusions. Placement of resin-based composite restorations was associated with detectable increases in saliva of BPA and other study compounds within one hour after restoration placement and an increased concentration of BPA in urine nine to 30 hours after restoration placement. Rubber dam use did not reduce the absorption of BPA (measured as BPA level in urine) during the study. Clinical Implications. Additional studies are needed to address how long BPA levels in urine associated with composite placement remain elevated to aid in better understanding of the clearance rates of BPA and other study compounds. Abstract: Objectives: Polymerization shrinkage causes stress at the tooth-restoration interface. The magnitude of the stress depends upon several factors, such as the configuration factor (C-factor) of the cavity, the polymerization–conversion rate and filling technique. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of curing time and filling method when high C-factor cavities were filled with low-shrinking composites. Methods: Three low-shrinking (Filtek Silorane, 3M ESPE: FS; N’Durance, Septodont: N’D; Kalore, GC: Ka) and one conventional composite (Z100, 3M ESPE) were bonded into standardized occlusal Class-I cavities using either a two-step self-etch adhesive (Silorane System Adhesive, 3M ESPE: SSA) or a one-step self-etch adhesive (G-Bond, GC: GB). Five experimental groups were formed according to the employed adhesive/composite combination (SSA/FS, SSA/Z100, GB/N’D, GB/Ka, GB/Z100), and further divided into three subgroups conforming to curing time and filling technique (20s/bulk; 80s/bulk; 80s/layered). For each subgroup, non-trimmed 1mm×1mm sticks were prepared from five teeth to measure the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) to cavity-bottom dentine. Results: The two-step self-etch adhesive SSA generated higher bond strengths than the one-step self-etch adhesive GB, irrespective of the filling method. When GB was used, bulk filling with a low-shrinking composite revealed the highest bond strengths. For all composites, the layering method provided the highest bond strengths. Significance: The two-step self-etch adhesive Silorane System Adhesive (3M ESPE) performed better than the one-step self-etch adhesive G-Bond (GC), regardless of the composite used. This study focuses on the mechanical response of a particle-reinforced restorative dental composite (RenewTM) under proportional transverse confinement to understand the effects of stress multiaxiality on its mechanical and failure behaviors. We describe the confining ring technique as an experimental tool to introduce multiaxial compressive stress states in dental composites that realistically mimic three-dimensional stress states commonly experienced by dental restorations in the oral cavity. Effect of initial radial misfit between confining ring and specimen is analyzed through computational finite element simulations, and an analytical treatment of problem is also provided to compute the confining stress during elasto-plastic expansion of confining ring. Experimental results suggest that inelastic response of Renew composite is significantly influenced by hydrostatic stress component, and pressure-dependent yield functions are required to analyze plastic deformations and internal damage accumulation process. CONTEXT: Dental sealants and composite filling materials containing bisphenol A (BPA) derivatives are increasingly used in childhood dentistry. Evidence is accumulatingthat BPA and some BPA derivatives can pose health risks attributable to their endocrine-disrupting, estrogenic properties. OBJECTIVES: To systematically compile and critically evaluate the literature characterizing BPA content of dental materials; to assess BPA exposures from dental materials and potential health risks; and to develop evidence-based guidance for reducing BPA exposures while promoting oral health. METHODS: The extant toxicological literature and material safety data sheets were used as data sources. RESULTS: BPA is released from dental resins through salivary enzymatic hydrolysis of BPA derivatives, and BPA is detectable in saliva for up to 3 hours after resin placement. The quantity and duration of systemic BPA absorption is not clear from the available data. Dental products containing the bisphenol A derivative glycidyl dimethacrylate (bis-GMA) are less likely to be hydrolyzed to BPA and have less estrogenicity than those containing bisphenol A dimethacrylate (bis-DMA). Most other BPA derivatives used in dental materials have not been evaluated for estrogenicity. BPA exposure can be reduced by cleaning and rinsing surfaces of sealants and composites immediately after placement. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of the proven benefits of resin-based dental materials and the brevity of BPA exposure, we recommend continued use with strict adherence to precautionary application techniques. Use of these materials should be minimized during pregnancy whenever possible. Manufacturers should be required to report complete information on the chemical composition of dental products and encouraged to develop materials with less estrogenic potential. Research on the dental restorative materials employed in remedying dental cavities has been conducted on many levels and areas, both with application of clinical and laboratory methods. One of the elements that determines whether the restoration may be degraded is the condition of its surface. The aim of the study was to assess the texture surface of composite restorations using a non-contact method of teeth models scanning. In this work, ten medium size cavities on the occlusal surfaces of molars in adult patients were prepared and restored with resin composite. Before undertaking the procedure and after the finishing and polishing of the restorations, impressions were taken and sent into the laboratory so as to prepare plaster casts. Every cast was then scanned utilizing the noncontact 3D surface measurement instrument so as to assess the texture surface of the restoration. The resulting three dimensional analyses of post-restoration models showed the correct marginal adaptation of resin composite dental material to the hard tooth structures and its smooth filling occlusal surface. Additional comparison of scans done before and after restoring the cavities allowed the calculating of differences in volume, mean and maximum heights. The applied method of analysis is thought to be helpful in the detailed evaluation of restoration dental material texture. Abstract: Objective: The intent of the project was to evaluate the fatigue behavior of particle and fiber filled dental composites that are fabricated either directly or indirectly using a notched specimen with respect to the number of cycles until failure. Methods: The materials were five dental composites, three normally cured in the oral cavity (Restolux, Renew and Filtek Supreme), direct processing, and two laboratory produced (BelleGlass, and Tescera), indirect processing. The specimens were 3mm×3mm×25mm bars with a 0.75 or 1.0mm notch in the mid-span of the bars, polished with 320 grit SiC paper and aged for 6 months in air, distilled water, artificial saliva, and a 50/50 mixture of ethanol and distilled water. Testing was performed with a stress mean range of 5–49MPa, the maximum number of cycles was 100,000, and the number of cycles to failure was recorded. Results: For the specimens that failed, BelleGlass, Restolux, and Tescera were able to withstand a higher cyclic loaded stress than Renew and Filtek. The 50/50 by volume mixture of water and ethanol resulted in the lowest resistance to fatigue for all materials. Conclusions: Of the dental composite materials investigated, the indirect processed and those with large particle fillers (higher weight percent filler) had better cyclic fatigue resistance than micro- and nano-particle fillers (lower weight percent filler). The purpose of this study was to investigate the compressive fatigue behavior of five dental composites. Cylindrical specimens of 8 mm length and 4 mm diameter were made according to manufacturers' recommendations and stored for two weeks in distilled water at 37°C. Compressive fracture strength was measured, and subsequently fatigue tests at 10 Hz frequency were carried out in distilled water. Compressive fatigue strength was thereby obtained using the staircase method for 105 cycles (n=17) under sinusoidal loading. Acquired data for compressive fracture strength were analyzed using ANOVA and Weibull statistics. Among the dental composites examined, Filtek® Z250 exhibited the highest fatigue strength. This seemed to be due to the superior matrix properties coupled with a specific filler type at the highest weight%/volume% ratio. In addition, fracture mechanisms of the composites were examined. The best treatment option for large caries in permanent posterior teeth is still a matter of uncertainty in dental literature. The authors conducted a network meta-analysis to address the challenges related to rehabilitation of these teeth. The authors selected prospective and retrospective studies that compared at least 2 different treatment alternatives for permanent teeth with a minimum of 5 years of follow-up. The authors searched databases from MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science in October 2019 without language or year of publication restrictions. From 11,263 studies identified, 43 studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were included in the final review. Only 13 studies were randomized controlled trials and were classified as low risk of bias. Gold (annual failure rate of 0.29%) and metal ceramic (annual failure rate of 0.52%) crowns performed better for indirect restorations and direct resin composite performed better for direct restorations (annual failure rate of 2.19%). The most substantial comparisons were between feldspathic and glass ceramics, followed by direct resin composite and amalgam; there were no statistically significant differences between these interventions. Results of the pairwise meta-analysis showed mainly glass ionomer as significantly more prone to failure than amalgam and direct composite resin. Dental restorative resin composites are a pivotal class of organic/inorganic hybrid materials. The main reasons for their failure are secondary caries and dental composite fractures, which prevent their long‐term service in posterior restorations. A remedy to these problems is improving the interfacial adhesion between the resin matrix and the fillers. Surface‐modified inorganic fillers show strong potential as more than just a bond between these two phases and can therefore be considered a medium to compensate for the deficits of dental composites. This paper mainly discusses strategies to improve the interfacial adhesion of dental composites, including surface treatments of fillers with coupling agents, polymers, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) coatings, as well as the selection of porous fillers capable of micromechanical resin matrix/filler interlocking. Additionally, the existing deficiencies of these strategies and the prospects for dental composites are discussed. Dental restorative composites are vulnerable to unsatisfactory mechanical properties, which are due in part to the degradation of the matrix/filler interfacial bonding during service. The main modification strategies to improve their interface adhesion are discussed in this work, including surface treatments of fillers with coupling agents, polymers, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) coating, and the selection of porous fillers. The article evaluates experimental data from a nanoscale mechanical study of dental composite material and their use into the finite element method (FEM) model of dental filling developed in the ABAQUS software. It says that mechanical properties' nanoindentation testing was successfully used on the dental filling composite material. It notes that the modulus of elasticity relies on curing light intensity or in the material's depth.

Objectives To evaluate relevant optical properties of esthetic direct restorative materials focusing on whitened and translucent shades. Methods Enamel (E), body (B), dentin (D), translucent (T) and whitened (Wh) shades for E (WhE) and B (WhB) from a restorative system (Filtek Supreme XTE, 3M ESPE) were evaluated. Samples (1 mm thick) were prepared. Spectral reflectance ( R %) and color coordinates ( L *, a *, b *, C * and h °) were measured against black and white backgrounds, using a spectroradiometer, in a viewing booth, with CIE D65 illuminant and d /0° geometry. Scattering ( S ) and absorption ( K ) coefficients and transmittance ( T %) were calculated using Kubelka–Munk's equations. Translucency (TP) and opalescence (OP) parameters and whiteness index ( W *) were obtained from differences of CIELAB color coordinates. R %, S , K and T % curves from all shades were compared using VAF (Variance Accounting For) coefficient with Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. Color coordinates and optical parameters were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey's test with Bonferroni correction ( α = 0.0007). Results Spectral behavior of R % and S were different for T shades. In addition, T shades showed the lowest R %, S and K values, as well as the highest T %, TP an OP values. In most cases, WhB shades showed different color and optical properties (including TP and W *) than their corresponding B shades. WhE shades showed similar mean W * values and higher mean T % and TP values than E shades. Significance When using whitened or translucent composites, the final color is influenced not only by the intraoral background but also by the color and optical properties of multilayers used in the esthetic restoration. Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of the nano-hydroxyapatite incorporated silorane composite material with the commercially available dental composites. Methods: Filtek Silorane resin composite was incorporated with 5% and 10% nano-hydroxyapatite crystals and then mechanically tested in comparison along with the commercially available Filtek Silorane and Filtek Supreme XT after 1, 14, 30 and 90 days period. Results: The mechanical tests revealed that the modified silorane based dental composite had a significant increase in the mechanical properties than the commercially available Filtek Silorane and Filtek Supreme XT. Significance: The collected data suggests that nano-hydroxyapatite crystals modified silorane may provide the clinicians with a better composite materials having a longer life especially in the posterior restorations where the masticatory forces are very much high. Abstract: Objective: One of the challenges encountered with composite restorations is their inability to prevent secondary caries. Alternative fillers that initiate remineralization have been proposed but poor mechanical strength limits their use to lining and support materials. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a material with many dental applications including root-end filling and pulp capping. MTA is capable of encouraging remineralization by leaching calcium in solution, and has the ability to form apatite in physiological solution. The aim of this study was to characterize and investigate the chemical properties of MTA-filled composite resins. Methods: Composite resins composed of light-cured (Heliobond) and chemical-cured (Superbond) dental resins filled with MTA Plus (MTA-Light, MTA-Chem) respectively, and MTA Plus mixed with water (MTA-W), were investigated. Un-hydrated and set materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy after being stored dry or immersed in Hank''s balanced salt solution (HBSS). The chemical properties of the set materials were then investigated. Results: XRD and FT-IR analyses revealed that MTA powder remains unhydrated within the composite, even after 28 days of immersion in HBSS. Furthermore neither resin appeared to chemically react with the MTA. EDX revealed minimal diffusion of bismuth oxide through the polymer network. Apatite formation on the material surfaces was demonstrated by SEM. Significantly less apatite deposition was exhibited on the composites compared to MTA-W. All materials leached calcium and produced an alkaline pH in physiological solution. The pH at 28 days was: MTA-W 12.7, MTA-Light 11.4, and MTA-Chem 10.8. Calcium ion concentration followed the same trend, with MTA-W>MTA-Light>MTA-Chem. Significance: The novel composites exhibited calcium ion release, alkalinizing pH and formation of apatite, although in each case not as strongly as the control (MTA-W). MTA-Chem fared less favorably than MTA-Light in these aspects. Thus they are recommended for applications where bioactivity is desirable but not critical, and only they have a significant advantage over ordinary MTA in some other aspect. Abstract: Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate polymerization shrinkage of resin composites using a coordinate measuring machine, optical coherence tomography and a more widely known method, such as Archimedes Principle. Two null hypothesis were tested: (1) there are no differences between the materials tested; (2) there are no differences between the methods used for polymerization shrinkage measurements. Methods: Polymerization shrinkage of seven resin-based dental composites (Filtek Z250™, Filtek Z350™, Filtek P90™/3M ESPE, Esthet-X™, TPH Spectrum™/Dentsply 4 Seasons™, Tetric Ceram™/Ivoclar-Vivadent) was measured. For coordinate measuring machine measurements, composites were applied to a cylindrical Teflon mold (7mm×2mm), polymerized and removed from the mold. The difference between the volume of the mold and the volume of the specimen was calculated as a percentage. Optical coherence tomography was also used for linear shrinkage evaluations. The thickness of the specimens was measured before and after photoactivation. Polymerization shrinkage was also measured using Archimedes Principle of buoyancy (n =5). Statistical analysis of the data was performed with ANOVA and the Games–Howell test. Results: The results show that polymerization shrinkage values vary with the method used. Despite numerical differences the ranking of the resins was very similar with Filtek P90 presenting the lowest shrinkage values. Significance: Because of the variations in the results, reported values could only be used to compare materials within the same method. However, it is possible rank composites for polymerization shrinkage and to relate these data from different test methods. Independently of the method used, reduced polymerization shrinkage was found for silorane resin-based composite. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
