On 1 January 2019, the population of France was nearly 67 million (66.99 million), representing 13.1% of the population of the European Union. The year 2018 was marked by a low number of births (759,000) and a number of deaths (614,000) that topped 600,000 for the first time since the Second World War. There was an increase in inflows from third countries whose nationals are required to hold a residence permit to live in France (237,742 people, +9% with respect to 2016). Men increasingly outnumber women in these inflows due to the growing share of predominantly male inflows from Africa and Asia. France has one of Europe’s lowest immigration rates. With a total fertility rate of 1.87 children per woman, France still ranks first in Europe in fertility. The total abortion rate was 0.5 per woman in 2018. The number of PACS unions is gradually catching up with the number of marriages (4 PACS for 5 marriages). The share of same-sex unions remained stable in 2017 (3.1% of all marriages, 3.8% of all PACS unions). Last, life expectancy is still increasing but at a slower pace. It is the highest in Europe for women but not for men, who are in ninth position. While France has an unusually low prevalence of deaths from cardiovascular diseases, the situation is much less favourable for mortality at younger ages, infant mortality in particular.; Le 1er janvier 2019, la France comptait tout juste 67 millions d’habitants (66,99) soit 13,1 % de la population de l’Union européenne des 28.

POPULATION , *ABORTION , *MARRIAGE - Abstract
On 1 January 2020, France had a population of slightly above 67 million people, of whom 14.4 million were under age 18. The downtrend in births continued (754,000) in 2019, as did the ongoing increase in deaths (612,000). Natural increase is still the main driver of population growth. Inflows of foreigners from outside the European Union and Switzerland increased in 2018 (249,474 arrivals, up 4.9% from 2017). One in 10 incoming migrants were minors. The total fertility rate remained practically stable in 2019 (1.87 children per woman), and the increase in mean age at childbearing continued. Births to mothers under age 18 accounted for 0.5% of total births. The number of abortions (230,000) and the total abortion rate (0.58) increased slightly in 2019. The steady downtrend among women under 18 continued, however, and this age group accounted for just 3.5% of abortions in that year. Marriages (235,000) and PACS civil unions (209,000) increased in 2018, although the numerical difference between them continued to narrow. Age at marriage in France pursued its increase (35.4 years for women and 37.9 years for men). In 2018, 2.6% of marriages and 4.1% of PACS unions were between same-sex partners. Remarriage after divorce or widowhood is increasingly rare, and each divorce affects less than one minor child on average (0.91). Life expectancy is still increasing, but at a slower pace. It reached 79.7 years for men and 85.6 years for women in 2019. Mortality below age 15 is very low, and most deaths in this age group occur in the first year of life. Contrary to many other European countries, infant mortality has stagnated in France for the last 10 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MARRIAGE , *FERTILITY , *GAY couples , *MORTALITY , *CIVIL unions - Abstract
On 1 January 2018, the population of France stood at 66.9 million - 122,300 more than the previous year, though mean annual growth and especially natural growth were the lowest they have been in 20 years. Total fertility continued to fall, particularly among the youngest women. The number of residence permits issued rose in 2016 (to about 220,000). Marriages of both opposite- and same-sex couples continued to fall. Mortality fell once again in 2017, but there were over 600,000 deaths, reflecting the ageing of the population. The causes of death that show the most worrying trends are cancer in women, mental disorders, and diseases of the nervous system. Demographic events are spread unevenly through the year: marriages and the start of consensual unions happen most often in spring and summer, births in summer and autumn, immigrant arrivals also in summer and autumn, while the winter is marked by a resurgence of civil union registrations and peaks in mortality. TOTAL fertility rate (Humans) , *POPULATION statistics , *MARRIAGE , *REGIONAL economic disparities , *POPULATION - Abstract
On 1 January 2017, the population of France was 67 million, an increase of 0.4% with respect to 2016. The total fertility rate continued to drop in 2016, notably among women aged 25-29, the age group with the highest fertility. The number of residence permits issued rose slightly and reached its highest level since 1998. Newly arrived foreigners with a residence permit represented 0.32% of the French population on 1 January 2015, compared to 0.30% the previous year. Unlike the number of civil partnerships (PACS), the number of marriages - both different-sex and same-sex - continued to decline. Mixed nationality couples (one French and one foreign partner), who account for 18% of new unions, have a larger age gap between partners than couples where both partners are French. After a severe flu epidemic in 2015, mortality fell back again in 2016. The gender gap in life expectancy narrowed slightly in 2016, to 6.1 years. Demographic behaviours differ greatly from one département to another, probably because of social and economic disparities, as well as geographic differences (notably whether or not the département is located on a border), and cultural differences that influence mortality and union formation. FERTILITY decline , *MORTALITY , *DEMOGRAPHIC surveys , *HETEROSEXUALITY , *SAME-sex marriage - Abstract
On 1 January 2016, the population of France was 66.6 million (of which 64.5 million in metropolitan France), an increase of 3.7 per 1,000 over the previous year. Fertility decreased, from 1.98 children per woman in 2014 to 1.93 in 2015. This decrease was observed notably in young women. The number of residence permits issued - close to 200,000 in 2014 - increased slightly, and permit holders represent 0.3% of the population. More than half of permits were issued to women. The number of marriages (among both opposite-sex and same-sex couples) decreased slightly. Heterosexual unions were more often officially registered through a PACS civil partnership, and same-sex unions through marriage. The number of divorces decreased, as did the divorce rate; fewer minor children were affected by a divorce. There were more deaths in 2015 than in 2014, notably due to greater seasonal mortality. As a result of this mortality peak, life expectancy decreased significantly, by 0.3 years for men and 0.4 years for women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEMOGRAPHIC change , *ECONOMIC indicators , *ECONOMIC development , *POPULATION statistics , *POPULATION policy , *ECOLOGICAL carrying capacity - Abstract
On 1 January 2015, the population of France was 66.3 million (of which 64.2 million in metropolitan France), an increase of 0.45% with respect to the previous year. Fertility increased slightly, to 2.0 children per woman. Women had children at a mean age of 30.2 years, and men at 33.1 years. Nearly six in ten children were born outside marriage. Net migration remained quite stable. Among residence permits issued to migrants in 2013, half were granted for family reasons, slightly less than a quarter for educational purposes, 10% for humanitarian reasons, and 7% for work-related reasons. The number of marriages (among opposite-sex couples) continued to decrease slightly. Marriage was opened to same-sex couples on 17 May 2013. Between that date and the end of 2014, 17,000 same-sex marriages were registered. The seasonality of marriages remained fairly stable, while the annual peak in civil partnerships (PACS) previously observed in the second quarter shifted to the end of the year. Mean age at marriage continued to increase, reaching 34.6 years for women and 37.2 years for men in 2013. According to provisional estimates, the number of deaths in 2014 totalled 559,300. Women's life expectancy was 84.7 years and that of men was 79.2 years, a gap of 5.5 years that has been narrowing over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POPULATION , *MARRIAGE , *HUMAN fertility , *BIRTH rate , *SAME-sex marriage , *METROPOLITAN areas , *LIFE expectancy - Abstract
On 1 January 2014, the population of France was 66 million (of which 63.9 million in metropolitan France), an increase of 0.42% with respect to the previous year. In 2012, 180,000 residence permits were issued to immigrants from countries outside the European Economic Area, a majority of these to women. Half of the permits were issued for family reasons, and a quarter for education. Fertility decreased slightly, to 1.99 children per woman. As the proportion of women of reproductive age in the population also fell and the total population increased, this fertility decline was associated with a decrease in the birth rate in 2013. After a slight increase in 2012, the number of marriages fell once again: according to provisional data, 231,000 marriages were registered in 2013. Marriage was opened to same-sex couples on 17 May 2013, and 7,000 same-sex marriages were registered between May and December 2013. A total of 168,000 PACS (civil unions) were registered in 2013. The number of deaths in 2013 is provisionally estimated at 572,000, and in metropolitan France the number surpassed 560,000. Women's life expectancy was 85.0 years and that of men was 78.7 years, a gap of 6.3 years, down slightly with respect to 2012. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FERTILITY , *POPULATION , *LIFE expectancy , *MARRIAGE - Abstract
On 1 January 2013, the population of France was 65.8 million, of which 63.7 million in metropolitan France, an increase of more than 0.4% with respect to the previous year. The number of adults who received a long-term residence permit in 2012 remained relatively stable. The majority are young women. Fertility remained unchanged with respect to the previous year, but as the proportion of women of reproductive age is falling, the number of births fell slightly in 2012. Age-specific fertility rates changed little, although fertility in the 35-39 age group continued to increase. Births outside marriage are increasing, and 57% of children born in 2012 were registered to unmarried parents. The number of induced abortions remained stable in 2012, with little change in the total abortion rate or in age-specific rates. After years of steady decline, provisional figures suggest that the number of marriages increased slightly in 2012. Marriage is still highly seasonal and the vast majority of weddings take place between June and September. Progress in life expectancy slowed in 2012 due to a series of winter epidemics. The number of deaths increased by more than 4% between 2011 and 2012. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEMOGRAPHIC surveys , *POPULATION , *ABORTION , *LIFE expectancy , *DIVORCE - Abstract
France had 65.3 million inhabitants as of 1 January 2012, including 1.9 million in the overseas départements. The population is slightly younger than that of the European Union as a whole. Population growth continues at the same rate, mainly through natural increase. There are now more African than European immigrants living in France. Fertility was practically stable in 2011 (2.01 children per woman), but the lifetime fertility of the 1971-1972 cohorts reached a historic low in metropolitan France (1.99 children per woman), nevertheless remaining among the highest in Europe. Abortion levels remained stable and rates among young people are no longer increasing. The marriage rate is falling and the divorce rate has stabilized (46.2 divorces per 100 marriages in 2011). The risk of divorce decreases with age, but has greatly increased among the under-70s over the last decade. Life expectancy at birth (78.4 years for men, 85.0 for women) has continued to increase at the same rate, mainly thanks to progress at advanced ages. Among European countries, France has the lowest mortality in the over-65 age group, but it ranks less well for premature mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DEMOGRAPHY , *POPULATION , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *FERTILITY , *MORTALITY - Abstract
Canada and the United States have enjoyed vigorous population growth since the early 1980s. Although mortality is slightly higher in the United States than in Canada, this is largely offset by much higher fertility, with a total fertility rate at replacement level, compared with just 1.5 children per woman in Canada. The United States is also the world's largest immigrant receiving country, although its immigration rate is only half that of Canada, where today one person in five is foreign-born, versus one in eight in the United States. Based on recent trends in fertility, mortality and international migration, the populations of these two North American countries will continue to grow over the next five decades, but at a progressively slower pace. The most acute demographic issue today is not, as in Europe, that of imminent population decline, but rather of the geographic and social inequalities which have increased steadily since the early 1980s and which are reflected in major fertility and health differentials between regions and social groups.
