This work was conducted over three-year monitoring seasons of three almond cultivars (Guara, Marta, and Lauranne) subjected to deficit irrigation in combination with cover crops in a Mediterranean semiarid area (SW, Spain). Four water–soil treatments were evaluated based on the conjunction of two irrigation strategies: fully irrigated (FI), covering 100% of the ETC, and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), with two soil-management systems: bare soil (BS) and cover crop based on a mixture of vetch (Vicia sativa L.) and oat (Avena sativa L.) (CC). Throughout the study period in trees, the yield, the stem water potential (Ψstem), leaf nutrient content (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in soils, organic carbon, microbial biomass, fluoresceine diacetate, and enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase, protease, β-glucosidase, and alkaline phosphatase) were determined. In addition, the dry matter and carbon fixation by plant covers were evaluated. For Guara and Lauranne, yield reductions (22 and 26%, respectively) were found for water-stressed (RDI-CC) plots with respect to non-stressed combination (FI-CC) plots, contrasting with cv. Marta, without a significant impact on productivity in all combinations. That is, the RDI (~3.000 m3 ha−1) strategy enabled acceptable productivity, offering promising possibilities for cultivation performance under water-scarcity scenarios. Important differences in Ψstem could be observed and ascribed to irrigation strategies, especially for Guara and Lauranne, but without significant effects due to the soil-management systems applied. No differences were observed in the tree nutritional status due to the presence or absence of CC; however, its presence increased the fixation of atmospheric carbon, which was not the case under BS conditions. Additionally, CC significantly fostered the microbial processes and enzymatic activities, particularly in upper soil layers (0–10 cm) and with plenty of water supply in FI-CC plots and to a lesser extent in RDI-CC plots, which could encourage prominent aspects for soil quality and health restoration. Thus, the cover crop is congruent with RDI to facilitate soil functionality and water savings in a changing climate, contributing to resilient farming systems in the Mediterranean environment. Climate change scenarios and water restrictions are key challenges for Mediterranean citriculture, requiring sustainable deficit irrigation (DI) strategies to ensure sustainable yields. Further research on the physiological pathways that regulate crop responses to water stress is necessary. This work describes the physiological limitations induced under drought conditions in young Navelina orange trees, including the crop's capability to recuperate its physiological status upon rewatering and after water withholding. A trial was conducted in two-year-old trees subjected to three irrigation treatments: a full irrigation treatment (FI) and two different DI strategies. The results show significant decreases in gas exchange rates for stem water potential (ΨStem) values below −1.5 MPa, evidencing diffusive limitations from drought stress. Additionally, there was evidence of increased osmolyte synthesis, a preventative response to oxidative damage. Significantly increased levels of proline (Pro) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed with higher levels of water stress (ΨStem < −1.8 MPa), which leads us to assume that this threshold signals the presence of oxidative damage with no capacity for subsequent recovery, probably affecting the final yield. Due to congenital features, avocado (Persea americana Mill.) trees are substantial water users relative to other fruit trees. The current growing deficiency of water resources, especially in arid and semi-arid avocado-producing areas, has led to the demand for more sustainable water-saving measures. The objective of this review was to analyze the role of deficit irrigation as a strategy to face climate change and water scarcity through achieving efficiency, saving water, and maximizing the benefits that could be achieved at the level of the irrigated agricultural system. Particular attention is devoted to studies performed in the subtropical Mediterranean climate, in which irrigated avocado orchards are common. These studies analyzed irrigation demand, deficit irrigation, and determination of water status through physiological parameters, leading to possible sustainable irrigation programs for avocado in the context of water shortage scenarios. Through these insights, we conclude that under the current climatic circumstances with respect to available water resources, avocado farming requires sustainable resilience strategies to reduce irrigation water consumption without affecting the yield and quality of the fruits. Water stress inevitably affects the physiological processes that determine yield. Therefore, an admissible yield loss is required with smaller fruits and water savings made through deficit irrigation strategies. The rising shortage of water resources worldwide in crop-producing regions and the need for irrigation optimisation call for sustainable water savings. That is, the allocation of irrigation water will be an ever-increasing source of pressure because of vast agricultural demands under changing climatic conditions. Consequently, irrigation has to be closely linked with water-use efficiency with the aim of boosting productivity and improving food quality, singularly in those regions where problems of water shortages or collection and delivery are widespread. The present Special Issue (SI) contains 19 original contributions addressing water-use efficiency under challenging topic of sustainable irrigation management to meet water scarcity conditions. These papers cover a wide range of subjects, including (i) interaction mineral nutrition and irrigation in horticultural crops, (ii) sustainable irrigation in woody fruit crops, (iii) medicinal plants, (iv) industrial crops, and (v) others devoted to remote sensing techniques and crop water requirements, genotypes for drought tolerance, and agricultural management platform. The studies have been carried out in both field and laboratory surveys, as well as modelling studies, and a wide range of geographic regions are also covered. Water is the most limiting factor for irrigated agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas of European Mediterranean countries. The searching of alternative irrigation strategies such as deficit irrigation and the use of different tools to monitor the crop-water status are some options to improve the water management under limiting drought conditions. Infrared thermography is a non-invasive promising technique to monitor the crop-water status based on the relations between the leaf or canopy temperature and the transpiration rate, which is largely related with the stomatal conductance. From an energy balance point of view, as a consequence of stomatal regulation (partial closure) under a mild or moderate water stress, leaf temperature tends to increase because of a decrease in the heat dissipation associated with the transpiration process, which is known as the evaporative cooling process. However, temperature readings are highly dependent on many meteorological variables being very difficult to define threshold values of canopy temperature for the irrigation scheduling or the crop-water status monitoring. For this reason, in spite of many works devoted to the use of infrared thermography, there are many questions and doubts that have to be solved for real optimization, protocolling and standardization of this technique, (such as, when the images should be taken, the best time along the day, the most representative, and relevant water stress index or the image processing). Taking into account these considerations, the aim of this work was to respond to some questions that could help to optimize the use of this technique in some woody crops: i) which are the main advantages and disadvantages of this technique?; ii) which of the actual thermal indices is the most useful and representative?; iii) when is the best moment to assess the crop physiological status using the canopy temperature, focusing the answers in woody crops. Abstract: This study examines the suitability of trunk dendrometers for assessing fruit growth under deficit irrigation (DI) for two consecutive years in a mature citrus orchard. Two DI programmes were applied during the maximum evapotranspirative demand period: sustained-deficit irrigation, applied at 50% ETC on average, and low-frequency deficit irrigation, applied according to plant–water status, establishing different irrigation–restriction cycles. Additionally, a control treatment at 100% ETC was monitored for the entire irrigation season. Trunk daily growth (TDG) and fruit daily growth (FDG) were estimated together with stem-water potential at midday (Ψ stem) and the maximum daily shrinkage of the trunk (MDS). Significant relationships were determined for Ψ stem vs. TDG (R 2 =0.60), and vs. FDG (R 2 =0.78). In addition, significant relationships were established between TDG vs. FDG (R 2 =0.60), and between the daily increment of MDS (ΔMDS) and FDG (R 2 =0.50), revealing the strong connection between trunk and fruit variations caused by water stress. According to these findings, the DI effects on fruit growth can be monitored by means of TDF or temporal evolution of Ψ stem, promising automation possibilities for appropriately regulating irrigation under DI programmes, and predicting its effects on fruit size by continuous field measurement. Long-term impact of different sustained-deficit irrigation (SDI) treatments on a 13-year-old orange orchard (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck, cv. Salustiana) was studied from 2004 to 2008. The experiment consisted of a control irrigation treatment which was applied at 100% of the crop evapotranspiration (ETc) values for the whole season, and three SDIs imposed as a function of different water-stress index (WSI) values, defined as the ratio of the actual volume of water supply to the ETc rate. The values defined by the WSI were 0.75, 0.65, and 0.50. The plant-water status was measured through the midday stem-water potential (ΨStem). Yearly, yield and fruit quality were evaluated at harvest in each treatment, and a global analysis was carried out using the whole dataset. Overall, no significant differences were found in fruit yield between SDIs and control treatments, although significant differences appeared in some of the fruit-quality parameters (total soluble solids and titrable acidity) which also showed significant relationships with integrated stem-water potential (ΨInt ) and irrigation water applied. These findings lead us to conclude that SDIs have important and statistically significant effects on fruit quality. Thus, the application of sustained-deficit irrigation (SDI with WSI of 50) provides promising possibilities for optimising citrus irrigation and boosting the water productivity for citrus orchards in a semiarid Mediterranean climate. Mango is one of the most cultivated tropical fruits worldwide and one of few drought-tolerant plants. Thus, in this study the effect of a sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) strategy on mango yield and quality was assessed with the aim of reducing irrigation water in mango crop. A randomized block design with four treatments was developed: (i) full irrigation (FI), assuring the crop's water needs, and three levels of SDI receiving 75%, 50%, and 33% of irrigation water (SDI75, SDI50, and SDI33). Yield, morphology, color, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), organic acids (OA), sugars, minerals, fiber, antioxidant activity (AA), and total phenolic content (TPC) were analyzed. The yield was reduced in SDI conditions (8%, 11%, and 20% for SDI75, SDI50, and SDI33, respectively), but the irrigation water productivity was higher in all SDI regimes. SDI significantly reduced the mango size, with SDI33 generating the smallest mangoes. Peel color significantly changed after 13 days of ripening, with SDI75 being the least ripe. The TA, AA, and citric acid were higher in SDI75, while the TPC and fiber increased in all SDI levels. Consequently, SDI reduced the mango size but increased the functionality of samples, without a severe detrimental effect on the yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mediterranean region is one of the most water-scarce areas worldwide and is considered a climate-change hotspot. To assure the viability and competitiveness of irrigated agriculture, it is vital to implement strategies that can maximize water saving without compromising yield. Deficit irrigation (DI) for cultivating drought-tolerant species such as almond (Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A. Webb) can help in achieving this goal, while at the same time improving fruit chemical composition. This work evaluated the effect of DI techniques and cultivars on the chemical composition of almonds (cvs. Marta, Guara, and Lauranne) in order to elucidate the most suitable irrigation dose under water-scarcity scenarios. Three irrigation regimes were imposed: a control treatment (FI), which was fully irrigated, receiving 100% of the irrigation requirement (IR), and two sustained-deficit irrigation (SDI) strategies that received 75% (SDI75) and 65% (SDI65) of IR. Significant differences among cultivars and irrigation treatments were observed for antioxidant activity and organic acid, sugar, and fatty acid content, which were increased by the SDI strategies. In addition, highly significant correlations were found between leaf-water potential and components such as fumaric acid, sugars, and fatty acids. In terms of the cultivars, cv. Marta showed the highest antioxidant activity, cv. Guara was the richest in organic acids, and cv. Lauranne had the highest fatty acid content. Consequently, SDI strategies improved almond quality parameters related to their nutritional and sensory composition, with significant water savings (reductions of 25–35%) and without important yield loss. Deficit irrigation (DI) strategies are considered essential in many arid and semi-arid areas of Mediterranean countries for proper water management under drought conditions. This fact is even more necessary in crops such as almond (Prunus dulcis Mill.), which in the last recent years has been progressively introduced in irrigated areas. An essential aspect to be considered would be the ability to improve fruit-quality parameters when DI strategies are imposed, which can boost the final almond price and ensure the sustainability and competitiveness of this crop. This work examines the effects of sustained deficit irrigation (SDI) on three almond cultivars (Marta, Guara, and Lauranne) on parameters related to almond functionality, aroma and sensory profile, which consequently influence its marketability and consumers acceptance. SDI strategies allowed the improvement of physical parameters such as unit weight, kernel length, kernel thickness or color. Moreover, higher total phenolic compounds, organic acids and sugars were found in SDI almonds. Finally, the highest concentrations of volatile compounds were obtained under SDI, this being a clear advantage in relation to almond flavor. Thus, moderate SDI strategy offered relevant improvements in parameters regarding the marketability, by enhancing the final added value of hydroSOStainable almonds with respect to those cultivated under full irrigation conditions.
