Ground reaction force and moment (GRF&M) measurements are vital for biomechanical analysis and significantly impact the clinical domain for early abnormality detection for different neurodegenerative diseases. Force platforms have become the de facto standard for measuring GRF&M signals in recent years. Although the signal quality achieved from these devices is unparalleled, they are expensive and require laboratory setup, making them unsuitable for many clinical applications. For these reasons, predicting GRF&M from cheaper and more feasible alternatives has become a topic of interest. Several works have been done on predicting GRF&M from kinematic data captured from the subject's body with the help of motion capture cameras. The problem with these solutions is that they rely on markers placed on the whole body to capture the movements, which can be very infeasible in many practical scenarios. This paper proposes a novel deep learning-based approach to predict 3D GRF&M from only 5 markers placed on the shoe. The proposed network "Attention Guided MultiResUNet" can predict the force and moment signals accurately and reliably compared to the techniques relying on full-body markers. The proposed deep learning model is tested on two publicly available datasets containing data from 66 healthy subjects to validate the approach. The framework has achieved an average correlation coefficient of 0.96 for 3D ground reaction force prediction and 0.86 for 3D ground reaction momentum prediction in cross-dataset validation. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals immensely suffer from several physiological artifacts, including electrooculogram (EOG), electromyogram (EMG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) artifacts, which must be removed to ensure EEG's usability. This paper proposes a novel one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), i.e., MultiResUNet3+, to denoise physiological artifacts from corrupted EEG. A publicly available dataset containing clean EEG, EOG, and EMG segments is used to generate semi-synthetic noisy EEG to train, validate and test the proposed MultiResUNet3+, along with four other 1D-CNN models (FPN, UNet, MCGUNet, LinkNet). Adopting a five-fold cross-validation technique, all five models' performance is measured by estimating temporal and spectral percentage reduction in artifacts, temporal and spectral relative root mean squared error, and average power ratio of each of the five EEG bands to whole spectra. The proposed MultiResUNet3+ achieved the highest temporal and spectral percentage reduction of 94.82% and 92.84%, respectively, in EOG artifacts removal from EOG-contaminated EEG. Moreover, compared to the other four 1D-segmentation models, the proposed MultiResUNet3+ eliminated 83.21% of the spectral artifacts from the EMG-corrupted EEG, which is also the highest. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals suffer substantially from motion artifacts when recorded in ambulatory settings utilizing wearable sensors. Because the diagnosis of many neurological diseases is heavily reliant on clean EEG data, it is critical to eliminate motion artifacts from motion-corrupted EEG signals using reliable and robust algorithms. Although a few deep learning-based models have been proposed for the removal of ocular, muscle, and cardiac artifacts from EEG data to the best of our knowledge, there is no attempt has been made in removing motion artifacts from motion-corrupted EEG signals: In this paper, a novel 1D convolutional neural network (CNN) called multi-layer multi-resolution spatially pooled (MLMRS) network for signal reconstruction is proposed for EEG motion artifact removal. The performance of the proposed model was compared with ten other 1D CNN models: FPN, LinkNet, UNet, UNet+, UNetPP, UNet3+, AttentionUNet, MultiResUNet, DenseInceptionUNet, and AttentionUNet++ in removing motion artifacts from motion-contaminated single-channel EEG signal. All the eleven deep CNN models are trained and tested using a single-channel benchmark EEG dataset containing 23 sets of motion-corrupted and reference ground truth EEG signals from PhysioNet. Leave-one-out cross-validation method was used in this work. The performance of the deep learning models is measured using three well-known performance matrices viz. mean absolute error (MAE)-based construction error, the difference in the signal-to-noise ratio (ΔSNR), and percentage reduction in motion artifacts (η). The proposed MLMRS-Net model has shown the best denoising performance, producing an average ΔSNR, η, and MAE values of 26.64 dB, 90.52%, and 0.056, respectively, for all 23 sets of EEG recordings. The Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect on the bloodstream, induced by the static magnetic field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) devices, distorts Electrocardiogram (ECG) components, and poses challenges to cardiac gating and monitoring during MRI examinations. Restoring ECG components from MHD-induced artifacts has always been a challenge, primarily due to the influence of numerous device-induced and physiological variables and the absence of paired ground truth clean ECG for validation. In this research, at first, we employ unpaired restoration of MHD-corrupted 12-lead ECG signals using one dimensional (1D) Cycle Generative Adversarial Networks (CycleGANs) for channel and patient orientation-specific restoration. Subsequently, a 1D-segmentation-based comprehensive restoration scheme is proposed based on the phase 1 outputs to simultaneously restore 12-channel ECG signals, irrespective of internal and external factors affecting ECG. By employing the proposed Magnetohydrodynamic Generative Adversarial Network (MHDGAN) and MHD-to-ECG Network (MHD2ECGNet) for unpaired and comprehensive restoration, we achieved an overall spectral correlation improvement of 92.56% and 77.64% , respectively. In R-peak detection, MHDGAN demonstrated an overall precision, recall, and F1-score of 98.14% , 94.12% , and 96.01% , respectively. The extracted heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) from the restored waveforms closely match the ground truth, as confirmed through quantitative and qualitative assessments. Fetal heart monitoring and early disease detection using non-invasive fetal electrocardiograms (fECG) can help substantially to reduce infant death through improved diagnosis of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in the fetus. Despite the potential benefits, non-invasive fECG extraction from maternal abdominal ECG (mECG) is a challenging problem due to multiple factors such as the overlap of maternal and fetal R-peaks, low amplitude of fECG, and various systematic and environmental noises. Conventional fECG extraction techniques, such as adaptive filters, independent component analysis (ICA), empirical mode decomposition (EMD), etc., face various performance issues due to the fECG extraction challenges. In this paper, we proposed a novel deep learning architecture, LinkNet++ (motivated by the original LinkNet) to extract fECG from abdominal mECG automatically and efficiently using two different publicly available datasets. LinkNet++ is equipped with a feature-addition method to combine deep and shallow levels with residual blocks to overcome the limitations of U-Net and UNet++ models. It also has deep supervised and densely connected convolution blocks to overcome the limitations of the original LinkNet. The proposed LinkNet++ model was evaluated using fECG signal reconstruction and fetal QRS (fQRS) detection. As a signal-to-signal synthesis model, LinkNet++ performed very well in two real-life datasets and achieved 85.58% and 87.60% Pearson correlation coefficients (PCC) between the ground truth and predicted fECG on two datasets, respectively. In terms of fQRS detection, it also outperformed most of the previous works and showed excellent performance with more than 99% of F1 scores on both datasets. Deep learning models, adept at image recognition tasks, offer potential solutions for waste sorting applications. These models, trained on extensive waste image datasets, possess the ability to discern unique features of diverse waste types. Automating waste sorting hinges on robust deep learning models capable of accurately categorizing a wide range of waste types. In this study, a multi-stage machine learning approach is proposed to classify different waste categories using the "Garbage In, Garbage Out" (GIGO) dataset of 25,000 images. The novel Garbage Classifier Deep Neural Network (GCDN-Net) is introduced as a comprehensive solution, adept in both single-label and multi-label classification tasks. Single-label classification distinguishes between garbage and non-garbage images, while multi-label classification identifies distinct garbage categories within single or multiple images. The performance of GCDN-Net is rigorously evaluated and compared against state-of-the-art waste classification methods. Results demonstrate GCDN-Net's excellence, achieving 95.77% accuracy, 95.78% precision, 95.77% recall, 95.77% F1-score, and 95.54% specificity when classifying waste images, outperforming existing models in single-label classification. In multi-label classification, GCDN-Net attains an overall Mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.69 and an F1-score of 75.01%. The reliability of network performance is affirmed through saliency map-based visualization generated by Score-CAM (class activation mapping). The human liver exhibits variable characteristics and anatomical information, which is often ambiguous in radiological images. Machine learning can be of great assistance in automatically segmenting the liver in radiological images, which can be further processed for computer-aided diagnosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is preferred by clinicians for liver pathology diagnosis over volumetric abdominal computerized tomography (CT) scans, due to their superior representation of soft tissues. The convenience of Hounsfield unit (HoU) based preprocessing in CT scans is not available in MRI, making automatic segmentation challenging for MR images. This study investigates multiple state-of-the-art segmentation networks for liver segmentation from volumetric MRI images. Here, T1-weighted (in-phase) scans are investigated using expert-labeled liver masks from a public dataset of 20 patients (647 MR slices) from the Combined Healthy Abdominal Organ Segmentation grant challenge (CHAOS). The reason for using T1-weighted images is that it demonstrates brighter fat content, thus providing enhanced images for the segmentation task. Twenty-four different state-of-the-art segmentation networks with varying depths of dense, residual, and inception encoder and decoder backbones were investigated for the task. A novel cascaded network is proposed to segment axial liver slices. The proposed framework outperforms existing approaches reported in the literature for the liver segmentation task (on the same test set) with a dice similarity coefficient (DSC) score and intersect over union (IoU) of 95.15 % and 92.10 % , respectively. Transcranial doppler (TCD) ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that can be used for continuous monitoring of blood flow in the brain through the major cerebral arteries by calculating the cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV). Since the brain requires a consistent supply of blood to function properly and meet its metabolic demand, a change in CBVF can be an indication of neurological diseases. Depending on the severity of the disease, the symptoms may appear immediately or may appear weeks later. For the early detection of neurological diseases, a classification model is proposed in this study, with the ability to distinguish healthy subjects from critically ill subjects. The TCD ultrasound database used in this study contains signals from the middle cerebral artery (MCA) of 6 healthy subjects and 12 subjects with known neurocritical diseases. The classification model works based on the maximal blood flow velocity waveforms extracted from the TCD ultrasound. Since the signal quality of the recorded TCD ultrasound is highly dependent on the operator's skillset, a noisy and corrupted signal can exist and can add biases to the classifier. Therefore, a deep learning classifier, trained on a curated and clean biomedical signal can reliably detect neurological diseases. For signal classification, this study proposes a Self-organized Operational Neural Network (Self-ONN)-based deep learning model Self-ResAttentioNet18, which achieves classification accuracy of 96.05% with precision, recall, f1 score, and specificity of 96.06%, 96.05%, 96.06%, and 96.09%, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is commonly used in medical diagnosis and minimally invasive image-guided operations. During an MRI scan, the patient's electrocardiogram (ECG) may be required for either gating or patient monitoring. However, the challenging environment of an MRI scanner, with its several types of magnetic fields, creates significant distortions of the collected ECG data due to the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect. These changes can be seen as irregular heartbeats. These distortions and abnormalities hamper the detection of QRS complexes, and a more in-depth diagnosis based on the ECG. This study aims to reliably detect R-peaks in the ECG waveforms in 3 Tesla (T) and 7T magnetic fields. A novel model, Self-Attention MHDNet, is proposed to detect R peaks from the MHD corrupted ECG signal through 1D-segmentation. The proposed model achieves a recall and precision of 99.83% and 99.68%, respectively, for the ECG data acquired in a 3T setting, while 99.87% and 99.78%, respectively, in a 7T setting. Respiratory ailments are a very serious health issue and can be life-threatening, especially for patients with COVID. Respiration rate (RR) is a very important vital health indicator for patients. Any abnormality in this metric indicates a deterioration in health. Hence, continuous monitoring of RR can act as an early indicator. Despite that, RR monitoring equipment is generally provided only to intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Recent studies have established the feasibility of using photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals to estimate RR. This paper proposes a deep-learning-based end-to-end solution for estimating RR directly from the PPG signal. The system was evaluated on two popular public datasets: VORTAL and BIDMC. A lightweight model, ConvMixer, outperformed all of the other deep neural networks. The model provided a root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and correlation coefficient (R) of 1.75 breaths per minute (bpm), 1.27 bpm, and 0.92, respectively, for VORTAL, while these metrics were 1.20 bpm, 0.77 bpm, and 0.92, respectively, for BIDMC. The authors also showed how fine-tuning a small subset could increase the performance of the model in the case of an out-of-distribution dataset. Problem—Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, mass testing has become essential to reduce the spread of the virus. Several recent studies suggest that a significant number of COVID-19 patients display no physical symptoms whatsoever. Therefore, it is unlikely that these patients will undergo COVID-19 testing, which increases their chances of unintentionally spreading the virus. Currently, the primary diagnostic tool to detect COVID-19 is a reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test from the respiratory specimens of the suspected patient, which is invasive and a resource-dependent technique. It is evident from recent researches that asymptomatic COVID-19 patients cough and breathe in a different way than healthy people. Aim—This paper aims to use a novel machine learning approach to detect COVID-19 (symptomatic and asymptomatic) patients from the convenience of their homes so that they do not overburden the healthcare system and also do not spread the virus unknowingly by continuously monitoring themselves. Method—A Cambridge University research group shared such a dataset of cough and breath sound samples from 582 healthy and 141 COVID-19 patients. Among the COVID-19 patients, 87 were asymptomatic while 54 were symptomatic (had a dry or wet cough). In addition to the available dataset, the proposed work deployed a real-time deep learning-based backend server with a web application to crowdsource cough and breath datasets and also screen for COVID-19 infection from the comfort of the user's home. The collected dataset includes data from 245 healthy individuals and 78 asymptomatic and 18 symptomatic COVID-19 patients. Users can simply use the application from any web browser without installation and enter their symptoms, record audio clips of their cough and breath sounds, and upload the data anonymously. Two different pipelines for screening were developed based on the symptoms reported by the users: asymptomatic and symptomatic. An innovative and novel stacking CNN model was developed using three base learners from of eight state-of-the-art deep learning CNN algorithms. The stacking CNN model is based on a logistic regression classifier meta-learner that uses the spectrograms generated from the breath and cough sounds of symptomatic and asymptomatic patients as input using the combined (Cambridge and collected) dataset. Results—The stacking model outperformed the other eight CNN networks with the best classification performance for binary classification using cough sound spectrogram images. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for symptomatic and asymptomatic patients were 96.5%, 96.42%, and 95.47% and 98.85%, 97.01%, and 99.6%, respectively. For breath sound spectrogram images, the metrics for binary classification of symptomatic and asymptomatic patients were 91.03%, 88.9%, and 91.5% and 80.01%, 72.04%, and 82.67%, respectively. Conclusion—The web-application QUCoughScope records coughing and breathing sounds, converts them to a spectrogram, and applies the best-performing machine learning model to classify the COVID-19 patients and healthy subjects. The result is then reported back to the test user in the application interface. Therefore, this novel system can be used by patients in their premises as a pre-screening method to aid COVID-19 diagnosis by prioritizing the patients for RT-PCR testing and thereby reducing the risk of spreading of the disease. The non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) enables easy detection of developing heart abnormalities, leading to a significant reduction in infant mortality rate and post-natal complications. Due to the overlapping of maternal and fetal R-peaks, the low amplitude of the fECG, systematic and ambient noises, typical signal extraction methods, such as adaptive filters, independent component analysis, empirical mode decomposition, etc., are unable to produce satisfactory fECG. While some techniques can produce accurate QRS waves, they often ignore other important aspects of the ECG. Utilizing extensive preprocessing and an appropriate framework, our approach, built upon 1D CycleGAN, achieves fECG signal reconstruction from the mECG signal while preserving its morphology. The performance of our solution was evaluated by combining two available datasets from Physionet, "Abdominal and Direct Fetal ECG Database" and "Fetal electrocardiograms, direct and abdominal with reference heartbeat annotations", where it achieved an average PCC and Spectral-Correlation score of 88.4% and 89.4%, respectively. It detects the fQRS of the signal with accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score of 92.6%, 97.6%, 94.8% and 96.4%, respectively. It can also accurately produce the estimation of fetal heart rate and R-R interval with an error of 0.25% and 0.27%, respectively. The main contribution of our work is that, unlike similar studies, it can retain the morphology of the ECG signal with high fidelity. The accuracy of our solution for fetal heart rate and R-R interval length is comparable to existing state-of-the-art techniques. The world is slowly recovering from the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic; however, humanity has experienced one of its According to work by Mishra et al. (2020), the study's first phase included a cohort of 5,262 subjects, with 3,325 Fitbit users constituting the majority. However, among this large cohort of 5,262 subjects, most significant trials in modern times only to learn about its lack of preparedness in the face of a highly contagious pathogen. To better prepare the world for any new mutation of the same pathogen or the newer ones, technological development in the healthcare system is a must. Hence, in this work, PCovNet+, a deep learning framework, was proposed for smartwatches and fitness trackers to monitor the user's Resting Heart Rate (RHR) for the infection-induced anomaly. A convolutional neural network (CNN)-based variational autoencoder (VAE) architecture was used as the primary model along with a long short-term memory (LSTM) network to create latent space embeddings for the VAE. Moreover, the framework employed pre-training using normal data from healthy subjects to circumvent the data shortage problem in the personalized models. This framework was validated on a dataset of 68 COVID-19-infected subjects, resulting in anomalous RHR detection with precision, recall, F-beta, and F-1 score of 0.993, 0.534, 0.9849, and 0.6932, respectively, which is a significant improvement compared to the literature. Furthermore, the PCovNet+ framework successfully detected COVID-19 infection for 74% of the subjects (47% presymptomatic and 27% post-symptomatic detection). Detecting COVID-19 at an early stage is essential to reduce the mortality risk of the patients. In this study, a cascaded system is proposed to segment the lung, detect, localize, and quantify COVID-19 infections from computed tomography images. An extensive set of experiments were performed using Encoder–Decoder Convolutional Neural Networks (ED-CNNs), UNet, and Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), with different backbone (encoder) structures using the variants of DenseNet and ResNet. The conducted experiments for lung region segmentation showed a Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) of 97.19% and Intersection over Union (IoU) of 95.10% using U-Net model with the DenseNet 161 encoder. Furthermore, the proposed system achieved an elegant performance for COVID-19 infection segmentation with a DSC of 94.13% and IoU of 91.85% using the FPN with DenseNet201 encoder. The proposed system can reliably localize infections of various shapes and sizes, especially small infection regions, which are rarely considered in recent studies. Moreover, the proposed system achieved high COVID-19 detection performance with 99.64% sensitivity and 98.72% specificity. Finally, the system was able to discriminate between different severity levels of COVID-19 infection over a dataset of 1110 subjects with sensitivity values of 98.3%, 71.2%, 77.8%, and 100% for mild, moderate, severe, and critical, respectively.
