We applied transcranial magnetic stimulation on multiple motor representations, eliciting motor evoked potentials (MEP) in nine finger and leg muscles. MEP amplitudes allowed us to probe activity changes in the corresponding finger and leg representations, while subjects were deliberating about which index to choose. Our data indicate that hastiness entails a broad amplification of motor activity, though this amplification was limited to the chosen side. On top of this effect, we identified a local suppression of motor activity, surrounding the chosen index representation. Hence, a decision policy favoring speed over accuracy appears to rely on overlapping processes producing a broad (but not global) amplification and a surround suppression of motor activity. The latter effect may help to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the chosen representation, as supported by single-trial correlation analyses indicating a stronger differentiation of activity changes in finger representations in the hasty context.

Humans and other animals often need to balance the desire to gather sensory information (to make the best choice) with the urgency to act, facing a speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT). Given the ubiquity of SAT across species, extensive research has been devoted to understanding the computational mechanisms allowing its regulation at different timescales, including from one context to another, and from one decision to another. However, animals must frequently change their SAT on even shorter timescales – i.e., over the course of an ongoing decision – and little is known about the mechanisms that allow such rapid adaptations. The present study aimed at addressing this issue. Human subjects performed a decision task with changing evidence. In this task, subjects received rewards for correct answers but incurred penalties for mistakes. An increase or a decrease in penalty occurring halfway through the trial promoted rapid SAT shifts, favoring speeded decisions either in the early or in the late stage of the trial. Importantly, these shifts were associated with stage-specific adjustments in the accuracy criterion exploited for committing to a choice. Those subjects who decreased the most their accuracy criterion at a given decision stage exhibited the highest gain in speed, but also the highest cost in terms of performance accuracy at that time. Altogether, the current findings offer a unique extension of previous work, by suggesting that dynamic changes in accuracy criterion allow the regulation of the SAT within the timescale of a single decision.New and noteworthyExtensive research has been devoted to understanding the mechanisms allowing the regulation of the speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT) from one context to another and from one decision to another. Evolutionary pressures suggest that choices should be optimized to maximize rewards, by appropriately trading speed for accuracy. This speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT) is commonly explained by variation in just the baseline-to-boundary distance, i.e., the excursion, of accumulation-to-bound models of perceptual decision-making. However, neural evidence is not consistent with this explanation. A compelling account of speeded choice should explain both overt behavior and the full range of associated brain signatures. Here, we reconcile seemingly contradictory behavioral and neural findings. In two variants of the same experiment, we triangulated upon the neural underpinnings of the SAT in the human brain using both EEG and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We found that distinct neural signals, namely the event-related potential (ERP) centroparietal positivity (CPP) and a smoothed motor-evoked potential (MEP) signal, which have both previously been shown to relate to decision-related accumulation, revealed qualitatively similar average neurodynamic profiles with only subtle differences between SAT conditions. These signals were then modelled from behavior by either incorporating traditional boundary variation or utilizing a forced excursion. These model variants are mathematically equivalent, in terms of their behavioral predictions, hence providing identical fits to correct and erroneous reaction time distributions. However, the forced-excursion version instantiates SAT via a more global change in parameters and implied neural activity, a process conceptually akin to, but mathematically distinct from, urgency. This variant better captured both ERP and MEP neural profiles, suggesting that the SAT may be implemented via neural gain modulation, and reconciling standard modelling approaches with human neural data.

When performing a conflict task, performance is typically worse on trials with conflict between two responses (i.e., incongruent trials) compared to when there is no conflict (i.e., congruent trials), a finding known as the congruency effect. The congruency effect is reduced when the proportion of incongruent trials is high, relative to when most of the trials are congruent (i.e., the proportion congruency effect). In the current work, it was tested whether different kinds of instructions can be used to induce a proportion congruency effect, while holding the actual proportion of congruent trials constant. Participants were instructed to strategically use the (invalid) information that most of the trials would be congruent versus incongruent, or they were told to adopt a liberal versus a conservative response threshold. All strategies effectively altered the size of the congruency effect relative to baseline, although in terms of statistical significance the effect was mostly limited to the error rates. There are few behavioral effects as ubiquitous as the speed-accuracy tradeoff (SAT). From insects to rodents to primates, the tendency for decision speed to covary with decision accuracy seems an inescapable property of choice behavior. Recently, the SAT has received renewed interest, as neuroscience approaches begin to uncover its neural underpinnings and computational models are compelled to incorporate it as a necessary benchmark. The present work provides a comprehensive overview of SAT. First, I trace its history as a tractable behavioral phenomenon and the role it has played in shaping mathematical descriptions of the decision process. Second, I present a “users guide” of SAT methodology, including a critical review of common experimental manipulations and analysis techniques and a treatment of the typical behavioral patterns that emerge when SAT is manipulated directly. Finally, I review applications of this methodology in several domains.

Das Mauthner (M)-Zellen assoziierte retikulärspinale Netzwerk von Fischen und Kaulquappen erlangte im Wesentlichen aufgrund seiner Zugänglichkeit auf zellulärer Ebene und durch die enorme Größe der zwei M-Zellen Bedeutung in der Neurowissenschaft. Trotz der erstaunlicherweise geringen Größe dieses neuronalen Netzwerks mit nur einigen hundert Zellen und wenigen synaptischen Verbindungen, die von einem Individuum zum nächsten identifiziert werden können, ist es für ein wichtiges Manöver verantwortlich, den Flucht C-start der meisten Knochenfische. Diese Studie trägt wichtige Aspekte zu der Auffassung bei, dass das Flucht-Netzwerk, obwohl klein, hoch anspruchsvolle und plastische C-Start Entscheidungen steuert. In Schützenfischen lenkt es den sogenannten prädiktiven C-Start: Anhand der visuellen Beurteilung der Anfangsbewegung von abgeschossenen, in der Luft frei fallenden Futterobjekten, führen diese Fische einen C-Start aus, der sie perfekt ausgerichtet auf den späteren Auftreffpunkt dreht und sie mit angepasster Geschwindigkeit abstößt, um die Beute zum richtigen Zeitpunkt zu fangen. Die hohe Präzision in Bezug auf den Zielpunkt und die vollständige experimentelle Kontrolle der prädiktiven C-Starts machen diese Entscheidungen zu wertvollen Modellsystemen dafür, wie im Nervensystem Entscheidungen getroffen werden und wie Umwelteinflüsse die zugrundeliegenden Netzwerke beeinflussen. Zusammen mit der Zugänglichkeit der Netzwerke eignen sich diese Starts hervorragend für eine Untersuchung des Ausmaßes der neuronalen Plastizität und der Aufdeckung innewohnender Puffermechanismen für das Erreichen funktioneller Stabilität. Hier lege ich vier zentrale Ergebnisse vor. (1) Funktionale Stabilität. Temperatur beeinflusst die Physiologie poikilothermer Tiere und daher die Eigenschaften ihrer neuronalen Netzwerke, was ihre Leistung beeinträchtigen könnte. Dennoch müssen Schützenfische die richtigen Entscheidungen treffen: die Wahl eines ungeeigneten Drehwinkels oder Startgeschwindigkeit bedeutet den Verlust der Beute an die zahlreichen Konkurrenten. Das Entscheidungs-Netzwerk sollte daher gepuffert werden, so dass die Funktion nicht durch Temperaturveränderungen beeinflusst wird. Tatsächlich konnte ich herausfinden, dass nach einer kurzen Akklimatisierungsphase die Funktion der prädiktiven C-Starts der Schützenfische in einem Temperaturbereich vollständig erhalten blieb. Bei allen Temperaturen wurde die Reaktionsfähigkeit aufrechterhalten, und die Fische wählten genaue Drehungen im gesamten Winkelbereich. Darüber hinaus passten sie mit gleicher Genauigkeit bei allen Temperaturen ihre Startgeschwindigkeit an die verbleibende Distanz zum Auftreffpunkt ihrer Beute und der verbleibenden Zeit bis zum Aufschlag an. Andere Aspekte wie Latenz oder die C-Start Kinematik waren indes nicht oder nur teilweise Temperatur kompensiert. (2) Intrinsische Qualitätssicherung. Verringern der Helligkeit reduziert die Zuverlässigkeit der visuellen Information, auf dessen Grundlage die prädiktiven Starts ausgeführt werden. Basierend auf typischen Befunden vieler Entscheidungen sollte dies zu einem Zerfall der Genauigkeit führen. Jedoch konnte ich herausfinden, dass dies nicht für die Schützenfisch C-Starts zutrifft. Die Schützenfische entschieden sich richtig im gesamten Bereich von Eingangskonstellationen mit konstanter Genauigkeit bis zu einer reduzierten Helligkeit von 5×10ˉ³ cd mˉ². Unterhalb dieser Schwelle wurden keine prädiktiven C-Starts ausgelöst, obwohl die Fische bei dieser und weit aus geringeren Lichtverhältnissen nachweislich sehen konnten und präzise auf Beute schossen. Trotz der Verringerung der Auslösewahrscheinlichkeit und gleichzeitigem Anstieg der Latenz (um die Beute-Anfangsbewegung verlängert zu evaluieren), blieben die grundlegenden kinematischen Eigenschaften der C-Starts im Dunklen unverändert. Meine Ergebnisse weisen auf einen Kontrollmechanismus noch unbekannter Natur hin, der sicherstellt, dass C-Starts nur dann ausgelöst werden, wenn sie erwartungsgemäß exakt auf den späteren Auftreffpunkt gerichtet sind. (3) Das Netzwerk wird auch in anderen Arten ähnlich genutzt. Da der Großteil der Knochenfische das M-Zellen assoziierte Netzwerk besitzt, kam die Frage auf, ob andere Arten neben dem Schützenfisch dieses Netzwerk nicht nur für die Flucht, sondern auch für genau abgestimmte Starts in ihrer Ernährungsweise benutzen. Anhand von Feldforschung in Costa Rica stellte ich fest, dass der Früchte fressende, in Flüssen lebende Machaca, Brycon guatemalensis, C-Starts in der Art und Weise wie Schützenfische verwendet. Wartend unterhalb von Bäumen mit reifen Feigen, frontal zur Strömung ausgerichtet, reagieren diese Fische auf die visuelle Information fallender Früchte bevor diese auf die Wasseroberfläche aufschlagen und starten in Richtung des späteren Auftreffpunkts. Der interessante Aspekt dieser Starts ist, dass die Fische (aber nicht ihr Zielobjekt) starker Strömung ausgesetzt sind. Erstaunlicherweise lösten die Fische dieses Problem gleich bei ihrem Start, indem sie sich in eine Richtung drehten, die optimal an die Abdrift auf ihrem Weg zum Ziel angepasst war. (4) Das Netzwerk kann in adulten Zebrafischen neu programmiert werden. Es stellte sich die Frage, ob man noch einen Schritt weiter gehen könnte und das M-Zellen Netzwerk sogar durch zuvor Entscheidungs-irrelevante Information angepasst werden kann. Nachdem adulte Zebrafische ausschließlich einer Umwelt ausgesetzt wurden, in der das gesamte Futter auf ballistischen Flugbahnen aus der Luft fiel, konnten wir zeigen, dass das Netzwerk tatsächlich die Fallgesetze verinnerlicht hatte. Die Zebrafische waren imstande, genau abgestimmte C-Starts für beliebige Flugbahnen auszuwählen, sogar für zuvor völlig unbekannte. Daraus ergibt sich die einmalige Möglichkeit, den Aufbau der Repräsentation eines Physikgesetzes in einem kleinen definierten Netzwerk zu erforschen, und um zu verstehen, wie Gesetze der äußeren Welt in der Sprache der neuronalen Netzwerke dargestellt werden.

Auditory perception depends on perceptual grouping cues, which relate to how the brain parses the auditory scene into distinct perceptual units, and auditory decisions, which relate to how the brain identifies a sound. These two processes are not independent; both rely on the temporal structure of the acoustic stimulus., Auditory perception depends on the temporal structure of incoming acoustic stimuli. Here, we examined whether a temporal manipulation that affects the perceptual grouping also affects the time dependence of decisions regarding those stimuli. We designed a novel discrimination task that required human listeners to decide whether a sequence of tone bursts was increasing or decreasing in frequency. We manipulated temporal perceptual-grouping cues by changing the time interval between the tone bursts, which led to listeners hearing the sequences as a single sound for short intervals or discrete sounds for longer intervals. Despite these strong perceptual differences, this manipulation did not affect the efficiency of how auditory information was integrated over time to form a decision. Instead, the grouping manipulation affected subjects’ speed−accuracy trade-offs. These results indicate that the temporal dynamics of evidence accumulation for auditory perceptual decisions can be invariant to manipulations that affect the perceptual grouping of the evidence.
